Following its official return to New Zealand last year, American Airlines has announced a new seasonal service between Auckland (AKL) and Los Angeles (LAX). Launching on 21 Dec, the new route to Hollywood marks the airline’s second operation to Auckland, following the successful launch of its Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) route in late 2022.

The introduction of LAX to its roster marks American’s continued focus on strengthening its Asia-Pacific footprint, ensuring customers are provided with opportunity and means to explore new destinations.

Los Angeles also serves as an important gateway to explore the continental U.S., Hawaii and Mexico. “The response we had from the New Zealand public when we returned to shores last year was overwhelmingly positive, so we’re excited to be launching our new seasonal LAX route later this year,” said Kyle Mabry, American’s Vice President of Operations and Commercial, EMEA & APAC. “Working closely again with our partners at Auckland Airport, we aim to provide customers with a sustainable, seamless travel experience that opens them up to new destinations, adventures and memories.”

Seasonal daily service between the City of Sails and LAX will operate until Mar. 3 with a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, offering customers a world-class flight experience complete with Flagship® Business and Premium Economy cabins, high-speed Wi-Fi, and hundreds of movies and TV shows on-demand at every seat.

American’s inaugural LAX–AKL flight will land at Auckland Airport Dec. 23 and will depart for LAX Dec. 23. American also offers codeshare service between AKL and LAX operated by oneworld® alliance partner, Qantas.

Star Alliance member LOT Polish Airlines has signed an interline agreement with US carrier JetBlue Airways. With this, passengers travelling with LOT Polish Airlines from Warsaw to the United States can now fly on to more than 100 destinations from the JetBlue Airways network.

“We are excited about this new interline agreement with JetBlue Airways, as it allows us to offer our passengers much more flight options in North America,” said Michal Fijol, chief commercial officer, LOT Polish Airlines. “They can book through-fares to their final destination; they also only need one ticket, and they can, of course, check through their baggage to their final destination.”

From its global hub at the Polish capital Warsaw, LOT Polish Airlines currently flies up to 35 times a week to US cities such as New York (Newark and JFK airports), Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles. The airline also plans to resume its US flights from Budapest by summer 2023. Thru JetBlue Airways, LOT passengers can now seamlessly reach many other popular destinations in the US such as Boston, Las Vegas, Orlando, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as in Latin America, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Fijol added, “We have been flying from Warsaw to the United States for 50 years and see a continuously high demand from Poland as well as from numerous other European countries and now even from India for these services. In addition to tourists, many business travellers book our flights to the US, as well as a large number of people who want to visit their families or friends on the other side of the Atlantic.

Despite the gloom of frustration that hangs over the British Isles following the divisive nature of Brexit and the associated political and social issues arising because of it, British Airways (BA) has revealed the Great British Public are channelling one of the nation’s most long lasting memes by keeping calm and carrying on — going on holiday.

According to the airline 2018 has been one of the UK’s busiest summers for foreign travel, with BA recording over four million customers flying abroad in August alone.

Providing some insight into which are the most popular corners of the world for UK tourists in 2018, BA has revealed a list of its top selling locations. It has also seen a record number of the population choose a staycation for the main August bank holiday,

Puerto Banus, Marbella, Costa del Sol, Malaga

On the list are long-haul destinations such as New York, Los Angeles, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong. But, what is worth noting is along with more traditional short-haul destinations such as balmy Malaga and Nice, as well as perennial getaway  Amsterdam, flights to Scottish city’s Glasgow and Edinburgh have also been big hits in 2018. No doubt, heading north to escape the scorching temperatures which have been cooking much of the rest of the country in 2018.

Glasgow in Scotland

Customers have also been getting in the summer holiday spirit, this year more than ever, with 212,000 bottles of wine consumed across all British Airways flights in July, up three per cent on last year.

Sean Doyle, BA’s director of network and alliances, said: “This year British Airways is offering its largest network schedule for 10 years, with flights to 211 destinations across more than 75 countries. Next year we’re confident new additions to the British Airways route map like Pittsburgh and Nashville, alongside Santiago, where we’ve recently increased the number of weekly flights, will be among our most popular destinations, as well as some of the traditional hotspots we’ve seen this year.”

Finnair adds LAX service for daily flights to California this summer https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/finnair-adds-lax-service/ Tue, 21 Aug 2018 10:55:02 +0000 https://www.traveldailymedia.com/?p=479432 The post Finnair adds LAX service for daily flights to California this summer appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Recent years have seen much of Finnair’s growth strategy centred around the Asian and Chinese markets. However, with the advantages of geography, meterological conditions not-with-standing, the airline has also developed a solid presence in North America, with services to New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Miami.

A350 in Finnair livery

In recent years, much of Finnair’s growth strategy centred around the Asian and Chinese markets. However, with the advantages of geography, meterological conditions notwithstanding, the airline also developed a solid presence in North America, with services to New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Miami.

Now, capitalising on this presence, Finnair has announced it will now begin operation on a fifth North American route. On 31 March 2019, the airline will start to fly three times a week to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In addition, the Los Angeles service will be Finnair’s first US route to be regularly operated with the new Airbus A350 aircraft.

Finnair will also be updating its existing US offering with seasonal additions to its summer schedules for San Francisco and Chicago, which kick off in April 2019. From May a fourth flight will be added for San Francisco.

These changes, along with the new LAX coverage, means Finn Air will operate flights to California every day of the week in summer.

Juha Järvinen CCO of Finnair

“We are very happy to expand our North American network and fly a new route to Los Angeles with our Airbus A350,” said Juha Järvinen, chief commercial officer at Finnair.

“We opened our route to San Francisco two years ago with tremendous success, proving that California and the West Coast are very popular with our customers. We are confident that this new route to Los Angeles will garner the same level of interest moving forward.”

The new route will be operated within the Atlantic joint business between Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia. Currently, the four airlines operate over 100 daily return flights between Europe and North America.

London’s Big Bus Tours will start cruising the roads of Los Angeles in the autumn and will aim to provide tourists with a never-before-seen look of the city. Los Angeles is the latest addition to the growing global portfolio of Big Bus Tours and L.A. joins Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

Alex Payne, Big Bus Tours CEO, said: “Our vision is to be the number one thing to do in every world-famous city, which we can achieve by ensuring that our tours are not only the first things customers do in every city, but are also the best. By adding new cities to our portfolio we constantly strive to keep Big Bus Tours as the market leader for consumers bookable through the trade.”

“Our vision is to be the number one thing to do in every world-famous city.”

Payne added that Los Angeles attracted a large number of tourists and is made for open-top, sightseeing tours making it a perfect choice for expansion. Big Bus Tours is not alone in this industry, especially in Los Angeles. A number of hop-on, hop-off bus tours in the city are locally-owned.

“Los Angeles is an ever-evolving city that offers visitors attractions and experiences that can’t be found anywhere else,” said Kathryn Smits, vice president of International Tourism at Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board. “It doesn’t matter if you’re coming to L.A. for the first time or the hundredth, there’s always something new to experience, so we’re thrilled that Big Bus Tours will begin offering tours in L.A. and that visitors have another great option on how to explore our dynamic city.”

Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills.

Big Bus Tours also announced its Partner Support Portal for the trade: trade.bigbustours.com will provide trade partners with the latest new Big Bus Tours’ products, as well as service, route and ticket information, maps, brand assets, image and video libraries.

The site will be an easy-to-use one-stop-shop for trade partners to enable them to sell Big Bus products effectively.

Striving to beat its competition, Big Bus Tours will feature live guides, digital content, free WiFi, and real-time tracking through the company’s mobile app.

Big Bus Tours will bring tourists to some of the must-see places to visit, including Hollywood, Downtown and the Oceanside locations of Venice and Santa Monica, before looking to expand to cover celebrity neighbourhoods.

The elaborate design of the suite is symbolic of Anna May’s daring personality and appreciation of an exuberant lifestyle. It features fine marbles, bronze finishes, and lavish seating, which recreates the starlet’s living quarters after she received fame.

Hong Kong Airlines will start flying to the US this year, with the launch of a new direct trans-Pacific service to Los Angeles.

Commencing on 18 December 2017, the airline will use its brand new Airbus A350 aircraft to operate four weekly flights (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) between Hong Kong and LA. The frequency of the route will then increase to daily flights on 16 January 2018.

The new long-haul route will be enabled by the delivery of Hong Kong Airlines’ new fleet of A350 aircraft. These fuel-efficient twin-aisle jets will be configured with 334 seats in two classes – 33 in business class and 301 in economy. Hong Kong Airlines has ordered 17 A350s in total, to expand its long-haul network.

LA will become Hong Kong Airlines’ second North American destination, following Vancouver.

“Following the success of Vancouver route, we are excited to set up the first destination in the continental United States to further expand our international network,” said Li Dianchun, chief commercial officer of Hong Kong Airlines. “The launch of [the] Los Angeles route will strengthen the connection with our well-developed Asia Pacific network, thus providing more travel options for business, leisure, academic or family travellers.”

Hong Kong Airlines will become the third airline flying direct between Hong Kong and LA, following American Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

Xiamen Airlines, the fast-growing Chinese carrier, has launched its first ever flights to Los Angeles.

The airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner touched down at LAX for the first time on 27 June 2017, following a trans-Pacific flight from Xiamen, in Southeast China’s Fujian province.

Xiamen Airlines will deploy its largest aircraft on the route – a 257 seat 787-9 Dreamliner with business and economy class cabins.

This becomes the third US route for the airline, following its existing Xiamen-Shenzhen-Seattle and Fuzhou-New York services. It also plans to launch Xiamen-Qingdao-Los Angeles flights in December this year.

“The opening of the route means Xiamen Airlines will operate 10 flights between China’s Fujian province and the US weekly, creating a convenient air bridge that strengthens economic and trade ties, and enhances cultural exchanges between the US and China,” the airline said in a statement.

Passengers from the US transiting in Xiamen will be offered free hotel stays and transit lounge access in Terminal 3 of Gaoqi International Airport.

Lufthansa has unveiled plans to launch a series of long-haul services from Munich next summer, including new flights to key Asian cities.

For summer 2018, the German national carrier will reintroduce its direct Munich-Singapore service, with five weekly flights, whilst also deploying its largest aircraft, the Airbus A380, on the routes from Munich to Beijing and Hong Kong.

To cater for these flights, Lufthansa will transfer five of its 14 A380s from Frankfurt to Munich next summer, resulting in the addition of 500 more jobs to the Bavarian hub.

As well as the two Asian mega-cities, Los Angeles will get a direct A380 flight from the Bavarian capital next summer. Also in the US, Lufthansa will start flying direct from Munich to San Diego, whilst adding more flights to Chicago.

“With the A380 we can offer our Munich customers a premium aircraft at a five-star hub,” said Harry Hohmeister, the Lufthansa board member responsible for hub management. “In recent years, we have made great progress in steering our hubs. We harmonised and integrated processes and are now more flexible in utilising our aircraft at different locations. Quality, efficiency and growth will always remain our top priority.”

Lufthansa’s A380 can seat 509 passengers in four cabins, including eight in first class, 78 in business class, 52 in premium economy and 371 in economy.

Singapore will be reconnected with Los Angeles later this year, when United Airlines launches one of the world’s longest air routes.

There have been no non-stop flights between the two cities since Singapore Airlines suspended its service in 2013. But from 27 October 2017, United will commence daily direct flights on the Singapore-LAX route. This follows the launch of the airline’s Singapore-San Francisco service in 2016.

“United is making travel to Singapore easier and even more convenient than ever before and customers arriving to Los Angeles will have multiple opportunities to connect to hundreds of United destinations in the US, Canada and Latin America,” said Dave Hilfman, United’s senior vice president of worldwide sales. “Our commitment to our Los Angeles hub is more than 50 years strong and with today’s new Singapore service announcement, we continue to strengthen our position as the leading US carrier to Asia.”

Under the new schedule, United flight UA37 will depart LAX at 2055 daily and arrive in Singapore at 0650 two days later. The return flight, UA38, will take off from Singapore’s Changi Airport at 1100 and arrive back in Los Angeles at 1015 the same day. The flights cross the International Date Line.

The flying times will be just under 18 hours westbound and slightly over 15 hours eastbound, and the total distance of 14,114km makes it one of the world’s longest air routes – only exceeded by the Doha-Auckland and Dubai-Auckland services operated by Qatar Airways and Emirates respectively. It will also be the longest flight operated by any US airline, and the longest route flown by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

“We are proud that United Airlines will set a new record for the longest non-stop route by a domestic carrier right here at LAX. This historic route to Singapore will bring more flights, tourists and economic growth to Los Angeles,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports.

United will deploy its larger 252-seat 787-9 Dreamliner on the route, offering 48 seats in business class and 204 in economy, including 88 premium economy seats.

World’s longest air routes

Doha-Auckland (Qatar Airways)        –    14,536km
Dubai-Auckland (Emirates)                –    14,201km
Los Angeles-Singapore (United)        –    14,114km

Virgin Australia’s passengers are now being offered connections to three major Canadian cities, via the airline’s trans-Pacific flights to Los Angeles.

A new codeshare agreement with Air Canada will enable passengers flying on any of Virgin Australia’s 18 weekly flights to LA to continue onwards with Canada’s national carrier to Toronto, Calgary and Montreal.

The launch of this codeshare partnership follows the initial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two carriers in December 2016. It also comes less than two months after the launch of Virgin Australia’s new direct service between Melbourne and LA.

“We are proud to enhance our services from Australia to Los Angeles by offering seamless codeshare connections to three major Canadian cities,” said John Thomas, Virgin Australia’s group executive. “This codeshare agreement will make it easier for Australians to visit Canada and for Canadians to explore more of Australia.”

Virgin Australia is also planning to codeshare on Air Canada’s direct flights between Australia and Vancouver in a subsequent stage of the agreement. Air Canada currently operates daily flights from Vancouver to Sydney and Brisbane and plans to launch seasonal services between Vancouver and Melbourne from December 2017.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

Qantas has revealed that the trans-Pacific route between Melbourne and Los Angeles will be the first to be operated by its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The long-haul jet’s inaugural international service will take-off for the first time on 15 December 2017. Operating six times per week, the Dreamliner will replace the B747 service that currently operates on this route, alongside Qantas’ daily Airbus A380 flights.

The new B787-9 will carry 236 passengers in a three-cabin configuration, with business, premium economy and economy class seating. The larger, 364-seat B747 currently operates the route twice a week, so the additional flights will lead to a capacity increase of approximately 1,400 weekly seats.

The expansion of the Melbourne-LA service from nine to 13 return weekly flights will also give passengers the option of morning or afternoon departure from Melbourne on most days.

“The Dreamliner is a game-changing aircraft that opens up a new era for Qantas, and it’s been designed with passenger comfort in mind,” said Qantas International’s CEO, Gareth Evans. “The aircraft itself offers passengers larger windows, a smoother ride and better air quality to reduce jetlag.

“In economy there’s more room and plenty of storage. In business, our suites will offer a fully flat-bed and direct aisle access. We’ll be unveiling our premium economy in the first quarter of next year and it will set new standards for the industry,” he added.

Today’s announcement follows the recent revelation that Qantas will fly non-stop from Perth to London from March 2018, also using the new aircraft.

“With additional seats come additional capacity, which now enables PAL to increase frequencies on its trans- Pacific flights to the US mainland and Canada. Our passengers can now choose from a wider variety of schedules and at the same time,” added PAL’ president & chief operating officer, Jaime J. Bautista.

The new aircraft come equipped with 365 seats in two cabins – 42 in business class and 323 in economy – as well as in-flight Wi-Fi.

Virgin Australia has revealed plans to revise and expand its long-haul routes, both east across the Pacific and west across the Indian Ocean.

Commencing in 2017, the airline will launch five weekly direct flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles, and three weekly services from Perth to Abu Dhabi.

But to enable the new services, Virgin Australia will cease operating its thrice times weekly Sydney-Abu Dhabi flights, while its Brisbane-Los Angeles schedule will be reduced from daily to six flights a week.

The trans-Pacific Melbourne-LA route will commence on 4 April and will be operated using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, while the Perth-Abu Dhabi service will run three times a week from 9 June using an Airbus A330-200.

Virgin Australia will leverage its partnerships on the routes, with Delta Air Lines codesharing on the Melbourne-LA flights and Etihad teaming up on the Perth-Abu Dhabi services.

“The United States is a key market for Virgin Australia and this enables us to service Los Angeles from the three biggest gateways in Australia – Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney,” said Virgin Australia’s group CEO, John Borghetti. “In partnership with Delta Air Lines, we will soon offer 25 services each week from Australia to Los Angeles and remain the only trans-Pacific alliance to offer business class guests lie flat beds with direct aisle access on all services.

“Our A330 aircraft will be deployed on a long-haul international route for the first time on flights between Perth and Abu Dhabi, which increases the number of services offered on the route from seven to 10 per week through our alliance with Etihad Airways,” he added.

Following the schedule changes, passengers will continue to have the option of twice daily flights between Sydney and Abu Dhabi with Etihad.

Garuda Indonesia will soon be able to fly to the US, after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) upgraded Indonesia’s safety rating.

Indonesia had been a Category 2-rated country, meaning that its safety standards were below the international level set out by ICAO, and prohibiting the country’s airlines from mounting flights to the US. But the FAA announced this week that it has now raised Indonesia’s rating to Category 1.

Following the ruling, national carrier Garuda has already confirmed that it intends to launch its first ever US flights.

Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported the airline’s vice president of corporate communications, Benny S. Butarbutar, as saying that Garuda wants to commence services to New York and Los Angeles, with two or three flights per week.

“Well make our flight schedule convenient for the people and thus win the markets trust,” he added.
Garuda will not operate the US routes direct however; both are likely to include a stop at Tokyo’s Narita Airport. Garuda will deploy its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on the US routes, most likely in a three-class cabin configuration.

Indonesian airlines were effectively banned from the US in 2007, following an unsatisfactory safety assessment. The European Union also imposed a blanket ban on Indonesian airlines at that time, but then partially lifted it in 2009, allowing Garuda to relaunch flights to Europe.

Lucky Air, the Kunming-based subsidiary of China’s HNA Group, is planning to spread its wings east and west, with the launch of new international flights to the US and Europe.

The airline has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to launch its first ever cross-continental services later this year. If approved, twice weekly flights from Kunming to both Moscow and Los Angeles could commence as early as in December.

Lucky Air does not currently operate any long-haul aircraft, but it plans to borrow Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft from Hainan Airlines, another HNA Group company, to enable its long-haul growth.

The expansion of Lucky Air marks the continuation of HNA Group’s long-haul strategy. Hainan Airlines has been gradually expanding its long-haul network in recent years, most notably in North America, and last year Beijing-based Capital Airlines commenced its first long-haul routes to Europe. And earlier this year, Tianjin Airlines launched its inaugural long-haul flights to Moscow and London.

Lucky Air will become the second carrier to operate long-haul international flights from Kunming, after China Eastern Airlines, which currently connects the Yunnan provincial capital with Paris and Vancouver.

At present, Lucky Air operates domestic and short-haul international services to destinations in Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, South Korea and Taiwan, using a fleet of 30 single-aisle Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. But it plans to more than double its fleet by end of 2020.

Garuda Indonesia is planning to launch flights to the US as early as next year.

At present, the national carrier is unable to fly to the US as Indonesia has a ‘Category 2’ safety rating with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which means that Indonesian airlines are not permitted to launch flights to the country.

But Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported Garuda’s president, Arif Wibowo, as saying that this could be resolved by 2017.

“Next year, we will try and clear this test as it is part of our five-year plan, or this may be achieved even earlier,” Wibowo was quoted saying.

He added that Los Angeles and New York would be attractive destinations, but that flights would not operate direct.

“The number of potential passengers departing from Los Angeles is 120,000, while many more depart from New York,” he stated. “We want to start direct flights but that is not possible as of now. The option is to fly via [Tokyo’s] Narita [Airport].”

With regards to the FAA audit, Indonesia’s Director General of Air Transportation, Suprasetyo, said the country’s rating could be upgraded as early as next month.

“We have completed and reported all the documents,” Suprasetyo stated. “God willing, this July we will receive the good news as Ramadan and Eid gift.”

Singapore Airlines will launch direct flights to the US later in 2016 – two years earlier than previously anticipated.

The national carrier has confirmed that effective 23 October this year, it will start flying non-stop from Singapore to San Francisco using its new Airbus A350 aircraft.

And the launch of this flight will also enable SIA to add a second daily flight to Los Angeles. At present the airline operates two daily flights to San Francisco – one via Hong Kong and one via Seoul. By choosing to fly direct to San Francisco, the flight that currently operates via Seoul will instead be routed to LA.

This new Singapore-Seoul-LA service will also commence on 23 October 2016, and will operate alongside the existing daily Singapore-Tokyo Narita-LA routing.

SIA had previously announced that it would relaunch non-stop flights to the US in 2018, with services to LA and New York.

“Our customers have been asking us to offer more US services and we are pleased to be able to do so. With new non-stop San Francisco flights and the increase in frequency to Los Angeles, customers will have two flights to choose from each day,” said Lee Wen Fen, SIA’s senior vice president of marketing planning.

The new direct Singapore-San Francisco service will be the longest flight in SIA’s network, at a distance of 13,601km. Both the outbound and return flights will have morning departure times, and SIA will serve the route using its new 253-seat A350-900 aircraft, which features business, premium economy and economy class cabins.

In addition to San Francisco and LA, SIA’s US network currently includes flights to Houston via Moscow and New York JFK via Frankfurt. And the airline is planning to expand its US operations even further in 2018, when the arrival of its new “ultra-long-range” A350s will enable SIA to resume direct flights to LA and New York.

Earlier this year United Airlines launched direct flights between San Francisco and Singapore, which marked the first direct link from between the US and the Lion City since SIA suspended its LA and Newark services in 2013.

Sichuan Airlines is planning to launch flights to Los Angeles in the coming months, marking the Chinese airline’s debut in the US mainland.

At present, Chengdu-based Sichuan Airlines flies to the US overseas territory of Saipan, and operates trans-Pacific services to the Canadian city of Vancouver. But it has now applied to the US Department of Transportation for permission to fly between Chengdu and LA.

If approved, flights would commence in September 2016 and would operate four times a week. The Monday and Thursday departures will operate via Hangzhou, while the Tuesday and Saturday flights will stop in Jinan.

Sichuan Airlines plans to deploy a two-class 245-seat Airbus A330 aircraft on the route.

This will mark the third new connection between Chengdu and California launched in recent years, following United Airlines’ direct flights from San Francisco and China Eastern Airlines’ Chengdu-Nanjing-LA route.

Thai Airways International could resume direct flights to North America, following the arrival of its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Bangkok Post reported the national carrier’s president, Charamporn Jotikasthira, as saying recently that the new fuel-efficient long-haul jets could enable it to relaunch flights across the Pacific. But the destination focus is likely shift from major cities like Los Angeles and New York to those with a shorter flight time.

“We are not looking at going back to Los Angeles because it is too far… and crowded with competitors, and we never make money,” Charamporn told the newspaper. “We need to look at other cities in North America such as Seattle and Vancouver, which offer more potential if we decide to return to the continent.”

Despite the fact that Vancouver, Seattle and LA all lie along North America’s West Coast, the distance from Bangkok to Seattle and Vancouver is significantly shorter than between the Thai capital and LA. And with the improved economics of the new B787-9 Dreamliner, which burns approximately 20% less fuel than older similar-sized aircraft, direct North American flights could soon be feasible again.

THAI is planning to take delivery of the first of four B787-9s in 2017. The airline already operates six smaller B787-8s, but the additional capacity of the B787-9 is likely to make it more suitable for North American routes.

One issue clouding THAI’s return to the US however, is the FAA’s recent downgrading of Thailand’s safety rating. An unsatisfactory audit by ICAO, the UN’s aviation body, led to Thailand being dumped in the FAA’s Category 2 last year, along with Bangladesh and Indonesia. And until the country returns to Category 1 status, THAI will be unable to launch any new routes to the US.

THAI once operated flights to LA, San Francisco, New York and Toronto, but rising fuel prices meant that these routes ceased to be economically viable. The airline’s last North American route, to LA, was suspended in October 2015.

Alaska Airlines and Virgin America will operate a combined fleet of 280 aircraft

Alaska Airlines has agreed to acquire Virgin America in a deal worth approximately US$4 billion.

Under the agreement, Alaska Air Group will pay US$57.00 per share in cash for California-based Virgin. This will enable Alaska to significantly expand its presence in California, which is seen as a key focus area for the Seattle-based company.

The combined company would become a major force in the US West Coast region, with hubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, and a combined fleet of approximately 280 aircraft providing 1,200 daily departures. The group would also maintain a dominant position in Alaska from its Anchorage hub.

“With our expanded network and strong presence in California, we’ll offer customers more attractive flight options for non-stop travel. We look forward to bringing together two incredible groups of employees to build on the successes they have achieved as standalone companies to make us an even stronger competitor nationally,” said Alaska Air Group’s chairman & CEO, Brad Tilden.

David Cush, Virgin America’s president & CEO, commented; “Our mission has always been to create an airline that people love – and we accomplished that while changing the industry for the better. Joining forces with Alaska Airlines will ensure that our mission lives on, and that the stronger, combined company will continue to be a great place to work and an airline that focuses on an outstanding travel experience.”

The two companies expect to complete the transaction no later than 1 January 2017 and the company’s headquarters will remain in Seattle.

This will mark the latest in a series of mergers and acquisitions within the US aviation sector. Delta Air Lines acquired Northwest Airlines in 2008, and two years later United Airlines merged with Continental. Most recently, American Airlines merged with US Airways to create the world’s largest airline group.

The merger of Alaska and Virgin America would effectively leave the US with six major airlines, with American, Delta, United and Alaska competing with low-cost carriers Southwest Airlines and JetBlue.

The Chinese carrier has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to launch four weekly services from Xiamen’s Gaoqi International Airport, in southeast China’s Fujian province, to Los Angeles International Airport.

Los Angeles will likely become Xiamen Airlines’ second destination in the US; the carrier is also planning launch a daily flight to New York from Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, from January 2017.

The carrier has submitted an application for the route with the US Department of Transportation, and if approved, flights are expected to commence on 16 December 2016. The airline already flies to the Chinese capital from Chicago and Dallas.

Since 2013, American has more than doubled the number of destinations it serves in the Asia Pacific region. The airline currently operates, or is planning to launch, services connecting LAX with Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Sydney and Auckland.

Details of the LAX-Beijing flight schedule and aircraft type are expected to be revealed at a later date.

“Delta’s new non-stop service to Beijing continues our expansion in China, providing our business customers with access to Beijing and beyond through our partnerships with the market’s leading carriers, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines,” said Ranjan Goswami, Delta’s vice president of sales – west.

“This is an important route for customers who will enjoy the investments we’ve made to upgrade Delta’s airport facilities, onboard service, full flat-bed seats with direct aisle access in Delta One, Wi-Fi and… in-flight entertainment.”

Qatar Airways celebrated the New Year with the launch of a new direct flight to Los Angeles.

The new route, which commenced on 1 January, becomes the airline’s first passenger service to the US West Coast and marks the start of a year of expansion in the country, with flights to Boston scheduled to commence on 16 March and Atlanta on 1 June.

Also on 1 January, Qatar Airways started deploying its Airbus A350 aircraft on the Doha-Philadelphia route, and the new aircraft will also be flown to New York from April 2015.

“We are honoured to bring our award-winning service to Los Angeles,” said Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker. “This great city embodies the glamour and sophistication that gave rise to the ‘jet set’ lifestyle, when travel truly started to be part of our life experience. It is only fitting that we bring the world’s best airline experience to the people of Los Angeles.

“Los Angeles and Doha have much in common. As passionate homes for sport, fashion, art and world-class entertainment, this new Qatar Airways service forms a bridge spanning continents and cultures, which will further strengthen our cultural and commercial bonds,” he added.

The new LA service will now depart Doha’s Hamad International Airport daily at 0745, arriving at Los Angeles International Airport at 1310. The return flights will then leave LAX at 1510 and arrive back in Doha at 1810 the following day.

American Airlines and Qantas will launch two new trans-Pacific routes in the next 24 hours, connecting Australia with the US.

Qantas flight QF73 will depart Sydney on Friday afternoon, bound for San Francisco, while American Airlines flight AA72 from Sydney to Los Angeles is scheduled to take-off on Saturday morning.

The new services have been made possible by an expanded commercial partnership between Qantas and American, and form part of a broader trans-Pacific network spanning Australia, New Zealand and the US.

“This is a new era for both airlines and we’re excited to be unlocking new travel options for our customers and helping to build trade, tourism and investment opportunities for the Australian and US economies,” said Qantas’ group CEO, Alan Joyce.

“We can’t wait to return to San Francisco, which was Qantas’ first ever US destination back in the 1950s and is still a hugely popular holiday spot for Australians. What’s different today is that we’re also seeing really strong demand for business travel, driven by the Silicon Valley technology boom.”

Doug Parker, American’s chairman & CEO, added; “Qantas has been a fantastic partner through oneworld and our joint business relationship, and we are delighted that customers are seeing enhanced benefits of this partnership through a greater choice of flights to the US. With this new Qantas service to San Francisco and American’s new daily service to Los Angeles, customers are the clear winners when travelling with our two great airlines.”

Qantas’ Sydney-San Francisco services will ramp up to six per week in January 2016, with all flights to be operated by a Boeing 747-400 aircraft that features the same interiors as the airline’s Airbus A380s. American’s Boeing 777-300ER will operate daily on the Sydney-Los Angeles route.

Singapore Airlines has announced plans to relaunch direct flights to the US, using a new type of ultra-long-haul aircraft.

The airline has signed a deal with Airbus that will see it become the launch customer for a new version of the A350.

This A350-900ULR (ultra-long-range) aircraft will have a range of up to 8,700 nautical miles (16,100km), enabling SIA to fly direct to destinations in the US on just two engines.

SIA has agreed to operate seven of these ultra-long-haul aircraft, which form part of its existing order for 63 A350s. And once the A350-900ULRs are delivered in 2018, SIA said it will deploy them on routes to Los Angeles and New York. The airline added that other destinations in the US are “under consideration”.

“Our customers have been asking us to re-start non-stop Singapore-US flights and we are pleased that Airbus was able to offer the right aircraft to do so in a commercially viable manner,” said SIA’s CEO, Goh Choon Phong.

“This is another example of how we strive to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations by remaining at the forefront of product and service innovation in our industry. It will also further strengthen the Singapore hub by providing the fastest and most convenient air connectivity between North America and Southeast Asia.”

SIA suspended its LA and New York routes in 2013 as they were deemed uneconomical. Both routes were served using a four-engined A340 aircraft. The new two-engined A350s however, are far less thirsty than the fuel-guzzling A340s.

As part of the deal to convert its A350 orders to the new long-range version, SIA has also decided to confirm an order for four more A350 aircraft, out of 20 that the airline had on option.

Brand USA, the tourism marketing body, is teaming up with the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) to host a tourism summit this month.

Nearly 200 tourism industry leaders from the US and China will gather in Los Angeles for the annual US-China Leadership Summit, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. The aim of the summit is to provide an open forum to discuss issues affecting tourism between the two countries.

Visit California and the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board are also backing the event.

“Tourism continues to be a powerful driver for ushering in a new era of cooperation between the US and China,” said Christopher L. Thompson, Brand USA’s president & CEO. “Bringing tourism leaders and government officials from both countries together will help facilitate meaningful partnerships during the summit and beyond.”

China is currently the fourth-largest source market for inbound tourism to the US, according to Brand USA. More than two million Chinese visited the US in 2014 – a jump of 20% over the previous year. And Brand USA project that China will become the number one market within three years.

“The increasing flow of Chinese tourists to the US translates into substantial economic impact,” Thompson said. “Chinese visitors spend on average US$6,000 per person on each trip to the US – about 30% more than other inbound international travellers.

“The summit is a tremendous opportunity to discuss strategies for joint marketing by the US and China. And, it affords an ideal environment for forging productive, enduring relationships,” he added.

In November 2014, the US and China announced a reciprocal agreement that extends the validity of short-term tourist and business visas issued to each other’s citizens from one to 10 years. Student visa validity also increased from one to five years.

Philippine Airlines announced plans to launch the first ever direct flights between Cebu City and Los Angeles.

Commencing on 15 March 2016, to coincide with the national carrier’s 75th anniversary, the new trans-Pacific route will operate three times a week using a 254-seat, two-class Airbus A340 aircraft, which offers flat-bed seats in business class.

The route forms part of PAL’s US expansion strategy, which has already included the launch of flights from Manila to New York earlier this year.

“Our customers in the Visayas and Mindanao have long clamoured for direct flights between Cebu and the US, due to the travel convenience this will bring. One can simply take a short hop to Cebu from any point in the Visayas and Mindanao and connect to Los Angeles, instead of flying all the way to Manila,” said PAL’s president & chief operating officer, Jaime J. Bautista.

“Foreign tourists and our kababayans (overseas Filipino workers) in the United States will benefit from the flexibility of choice in terms of flights to and from the Philippines,” he added.

PAL currently operates 35 weekly services to the US, including 11 flights per week from Manila to Los Angeles, 10 to San Francisco, four to New York, five to Guam and five to Honolulu.

The new LA service will also become the first direct connection between Cebu and the US, and boosts PAL’s international network from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to 34 weekly flights, including the existing direct services to Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo and Seoul.

Last year, US aviation authorities lifted restrictions on Philippine carriers operating to the country, allowing PAL to expand its US routes.

Thai Airways International (THAI) will suspend its last remaining US route as part of its latest round of cuts.

The national carrier will cease operating its BangkokSeoulLos Angeles route on 25 October 2015, while its Rome services will also be suspended.

THAI will also reduce the number of flights it operates to Kolkata, while its Hyderabad, Changsha and Luang Prabang routes will be transferred to its low-cost unit, THAI Smile. The airline will increase the frequency of two key European routes however, with flights from Bangkok to London and Frankfurt rising to twice a day.

The latest round of cost-cutting will also include the loss of more than 1,400 jobs, with THAI saying it would offer voluntary redundancies.

The LA suspension will leave THAI without a direct presence in the US, following the cessation of its New York flights in 2008.

THAI said the routes could be relaunched in future, depending on market conditions.

“The suspended routes are on temporary basis, which the company will review again after a period,” the airline said in a statement. “Once THAI has strengthened and is confident in the competitiveness of the destination, THAI will resume these flights, similar to the resumption of the double daily operations between Bangkok-London route and the Bangkok-Frankfurt route.”

Earlier this year THAI announced a major turnaround plan, including capacity cuts and approximately 5,000 job losses.

The airline suffered a difficult 2014, as unrest in Bangkok and the subsequent military coup and martial law damped demand for travel. The carrier a full-year loss of THB15.6 billion (US$445 million) in 2014, but rebounded in the first quarter of this year with a THB4.5 billion net profit.

Air China has unveiled plans to launch several new international services, including an alliance with Air New Zealand.

The Beijing-based carrier will launch a new daily direct service to Auckland as part of the partnership with the Kiwi national carrier. Air China will also continue to codeshare on Air New Zealand’s daily Shanghai-Auckland service, which will be operated exclusively by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from late August 2015.

“We are committed to working with our Star Alliance partner Air New Zealand to provide better air connectivity between China and New Zealand in order to meet the growing demand from travellers in both markets,” said Air China’s CEO, Song Zhiyong.

“The proposed alliance with Air New Zealand allows both flag carriers to build a sustainable air service between Beijing and Auckland and supplement the existing connectivity between China and New Zealand. This service, along with Air New Zealand’s Shanghai-Auckland service, will provide greater benefits to travellers in both countries in the coming years.”

Meanwhile, Air China has also announced plans to launch a new route to Melbourne and more trans-Pacific flights to Los Angeles.

The Beijing-Melbourne route will commence on 1 June 2015, operating four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. This will take the total number of weekly Air China flights to Australia to 23.

And finally, Air China will add more flights to its existing Beijing-LA route. Effective 2 May, the airline will increase the frequency of the route by four weekly flights (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays). And from 1 July to 24 October 2015, the extra flights will rise to daily. All the new services will be operated using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Currently, Air China operates 104 weekly flights to six destinations in the US: New York, LA, Houston, San Francisco, Washington DC and Honolulu.

Norwegian will launch new US routes next year

Norwegian has announced it will use its Boeing 787 Dreamliners on routes from Scandinavia to the USA.

The new aircraft will be used on flights from Stockholm to Los Angeles and San Francisco; Copenhagen to LA and New York and Oslo to LA, San Francisco and Orlando.

The new routes will launch in spring 2014 following its Fort Lauderdale route launches this November.

“I’m very happy to announce the launch of three new intercontinental destinations. The major traffic streams currently go between the US and Europe and there’s great demand for high quality flights at a low fare between the two continents,” said Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.

“So far the response to our New York, Bangkok and Fort Lauderdale routes has been tremendous. Most of our flights have been fully booked over the summer,” he added.

Qantas has welcomed US chat show host Ellen DeGeneres Show to Australia for a six-day visit.

The airline has partnered with Swisse Wellnes to bring The Ellen DeGeneres Show ‘Down Under’, filming a series of segments that will be screened worldwide in April. Ms DeGeneres and her crew arrived in Sydney this morning (22 March 2013) on an A380 flight from Los Angeles, which was temporarily renamed ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show Express’.

“Australia has already been a regular feature on The Ellen DeGeneres Show since this trip was announced in January,” said Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce. “The exposure so far, the coverage from this visit and the segments filmed in Australia to be screened as part of the show is priceless for the tourism industry.”

The move to bring Ellen DeGeneres to Australia follows Tourism Australia’s decision to bring Oprah Winfrey to the country in 2010.

Fiji’s national carrier, Air Pacific, will add flights to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and the US this year, following the delivery of its new Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Air Pacific will retire all its Boeing 747s by the end of 2013

The first new A330 is due to enter service on 2 April 2013, flying between Nadi and Auckland. This will mark the start of new five-times-a-week service to the New Zealand city. Brisbane will be the first Australian city to see the A330, with five weekly flights starting on 21 April. Sydney’s A330 flights start on 8 June, with frequencies on the route rising to twice a day from September 2013 and 17 flights per week during peak season, using a mix of A330s and Boeing 737s. The first Melbourne A330 flight will commence in December, with five weekly flights.

The A330 will also start operating to Hong Kong from 4 April, with twice weekly flights every Thursday and Saturday, replacing the B747 that currently operates the route. A third A330 flight will be added in January 2014.

The US will see its first A330 flight on 1 July, when the airline deploys the aircraft to Los Angeles. The current schedule of four weekly B747 flights will be replaced with a mix of A330 and B747 services until November, following which the A330s will fully take over the route, with daily services.

“The entire Air Pacific team is thrilled about the opportunity to start showing our regular customers and new visitors to Fiji our new state-of-the-art A330s,” said David Pflieger, Air Pacific’s managing director & CEO.” “While our goal has always been to offer our customers the best flying experience in the Pacific, our new planes are going to make a huge difference in our ability to deliver on that promise, and we will be revealing even better service and other surprises when we officially become ‘Fiji Airways’ later this year.”

The move to the new A330s comes as Air Pacific rebrands to Fiji Airways. The new A330s, which will feature the new Fiji Airways livery, will come equipped with 273 seats – 24 in business class and 249 in economy.

By the end of 2013, Air Pacific will have retired its entire fleet of B747s and repainted all of its B737s.
