The role of Helsinki Airport as a hub between Europe and Asia strengthens as Chinese Lucky Air commences flights to Finland in winter 2018. Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, has invested heavily in serving Chinese passengers and improving the customer experience at Helsinki Airport.

The new Lucky Air route will bring two major cities in China within reach of Finnish people and passengers travelling via Helsinki Airport. Lucky Air will fly a triangular route: When flying from China to Finland, the airline will first fly from Kunming to Chengdu and, after a brief stop, continue to Helsinki. The airline will then follow the same route back.

“Having the first Chinese airline in Finland supports our goal to develop Helsinki Airport as an important air traffic hub between Europe and Asia. Measured by the number of flight connections, Helsinki Airport is number one in Northern Europe and, according to passenger surveys, one of the best airports in the world. We wish the new airline warmly welcome to Finland and Helsinki Airport,” says Joni Sundelin, senior vice president at Finavia, the Finnish airport operator.

The route is expected to open on 17 January 2018, and it will be flown by wide-bodied Airbus A330 aircraft twice a week. Chengdu and Kunming are both Chinese metropolises. Once this route is opened, people living in these cities will have excellent connections to Finland and to the rest of Europe via Helsinki Airport. Lucky Air is part of the Chinese HNA Group.

After the new routes flown by Finnair and Lucky Air, Helsinki Airport offers excellent connections to China: Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu/Kunming, Hong Kong.

Finavia’s Helsinki Airport set an all-time passenger record in 2016: 17.2 million passengers. It is about to set a new record. According to estimates, the passenger volume at Helsinki Airport will be more than 18.5 million in 2017.

China’s HNA Group, which operates multiple airlines, is modernising its technology to support its global expansion efforts.

The fast-growing company, which controls Hainan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Capital Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines among other carriers, has signed a comprehensive technology agreement with Sabre. The deal will see HNA introduce multiple new solutions under Sabre’s ‘AirVision Planning & Scheduling’ and ‘AirCentre

Movement’ suites. AirVision is designed to allow airlines to forecast demand and improve their flight scheduling, while AirCentre helps manage daily operations and disruptions, with the aim of improving airlines’ on-time performance.

These solutions will be especially important in China’s fast-growing aviation market, which is already facing over-capacity issues that impact airlines’ ability to operate smoothly and punctually.

“China is a critical aviation market for Sabre because of its rapid growth. With that growth comes an increase in operational complexities. Our technology with help with that complexity and will allow HNA’s airlines to compete more effectively in a very competitive global environment,” said Hugh Jones, president of Sabre Airline Solutions.

HNA is also developing multiple new routes, including a range of long-haul services. These include Capital Airlines’ inaugural flights to Europe, Hainan Airlines’ expanded trans-Pacific network and Tianjin Airlines’ first routes to the UK and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Sabre is increasing its presence in China by developing a new operations centre in Shanghai, complementing its existing team in Beijing.

“HNA… is built on the enormous tourist market in China and is devoted to the development of aviation and tourist industry,” said Xie Haoming, chief operating officer of HNA Tourism Group. “The… solutions that Sabre has developed will make our airlines more efficient and profitable and enable us to better service our customers.”

To mark the agreement between the two companies, a signing ceremony was held in Beijing this week, attended by executives from HNA Aviation Group and Sabre.

The skies above China are set to become even busier in future, as the fast-expanding HNA Group prepares to launch yet another airline.

One of the group’s existing carriers, Kunming-based Lucky Air, is planning to establish a new subsidiary in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province.

Shennaio Airlines (literally meaning “sacred bird”) will be a joint venture between Lucky Air and local investors, with HNA’s carrier investing CNY1.05 billion (approx. US$152 million) for a 35% stake in the airline.

Initially based at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport, although potentially moving to the city’s new airport when it opens, Shenniao Airlines plans to offer both domestic and international passengers services. Like its parent company Lucky Air, the new carrier will operate under a low-cost model.

If the carrier’s application for an operating license is approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Shenniao Airlines will become the ninth carrier with an operating base in Chengdu, following Air China, Tibet Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Lucky Air, Sichuan Airlines and Chengdu Airlines.

HNA Group, which also operates Hainan Airlines, is developing a widespread portfolio of air carriers all across China. The conglomerate most recently launched Air Guilin in southwest China’s Guangxi region and Air Changan in Xi’an. It has also formed Fuzhou Airlines, GX Airlines, Urumqi Air and Yangtze River Airlines – a new passenger carrier based in Shanghai – in addition to its established existing units such as Hainan Airlines, Lucky Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines and Chongqing’s West Air.

Lucky Air, the Kunming-based subsidiary of China’s HNA Group, is planning to spread its wings east and west, with the launch of new international flights to the US and Europe.

The airline has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to launch its first ever cross-continental services later this year. If approved, twice weekly flights from Kunming to both Moscow and Los Angeles could commence as early as in December.

Lucky Air does not currently operate any long-haul aircraft, but it plans to borrow Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft from Hainan Airlines, another HNA Group company, to enable its long-haul growth.

The expansion of Lucky Air marks the continuation of HNA Group’s long-haul strategy. Hainan Airlines has been gradually expanding its long-haul network in recent years, most notably in North America, and last year Beijing-based Capital Airlines commenced its first long-haul routes to Europe. And earlier this year, Tianjin Airlines launched its inaugural long-haul flights to Moscow and London.

Lucky Air will become the second carrier to operate long-haul international flights from Kunming, after China Eastern Airlines, which currently connects the Yunnan provincial capital with Paris and Vancouver.

At present, Lucky Air operates domestic and short-haul international services to destinations in Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, South Korea and Taiwan, using a fleet of 30 single-aisle Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. But it plans to more than double its fleet by end of 2020.

Lucky Air, the Kunming-based airline owned by the HNA Group, will become a low-cost carrier.

The airline, which is second only to China Eastern Airlines in terms of seat capacity in China’s Yunnan province, will become the region’s first LCC. The transition process is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Under the plan, Lucky Air will reconfigure its fleet of single-aisle Airbus and Boeing jets, scrapping its premium cabin and accommodating 30 more passengers in the new all-economy aircraft. It also plans to generate ancillary revenues from the sale of onboard F&B and other services.

Currently, Lucky Air operates scheduled flights from its bases in Kunming, Chengdu and Lijiang. It already operates international flights to Singapore, Koh Samui and Krabi, and plans to launch new services to Colombo, Bangkok and Jakarta later this year. The airline is planning to almost triple its fleet size to 76 aircraft by end of 2020.

The transition of Lucky Air to a low-cost business model follows a trend started in 2013, when Chongqing’s West Air, which is also owned by the HNA Group, became an LCC.
