From November 28th to November 30th, the Spanish capital will be once again the heart of the high-impact travel sector. The third edition of Forward_MAD will be held at the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art and will be supported by the Madrid regional government. International professionals from travel agencies, hotels, investment funds, transportation companies, tours and activities will be among the participants and attendees of the event.

At the conference, experts in the luxury industry and associated companies, whether in tourism, lifestyle, or fashion, will analyse the evolution of these sectors, as well as the high-impact tourism and traveller segment, which has evolved from a terrain with defined boundaries and little permeability, to a more volatile and flexible concept, capable of accommodating the needs and priorities of many audiences. Not only has it adapted to new consumer trends, digitisation, and the spirit of the times to appeal to diverse generations, but the traditional notion of “luxury” has expanded to accommodate the new demands of travellers.

As in previous editions, the event’s programme will combine presentations and round tables, which will address trends, challenges, and opportunities in the high-value tourism segment, with opportunities to increase the participants’ professional network. One of the objectives of Forward_MAD 2023 is to create and expand the luxury tourism ecosystem to promote and consolidate Madrid as a destination in this segment. The region’s crafts and trades will play an important role as they are essential to differentiate Madrid from other destinations.

Among the confirmed speakers are:

  • Luis Martín, Head of Tourism at the Community of Madrid
  • Hanna Kleber, president atKleber Group
  • Yuriy Horovyy, Founder & CEO, at Almont Travel(UK).
  • Jules Schroeder, Chief Operations Officer at Insider Expeditions(USA).

  • Chris Fradin, SVP Partner Services EMEA & APC atForbes Travel Guide.
  • Héctor Coronel, Head of Tourism at Madrid City Council.

High-impact tourism as an economic driver
Tourism has continued to grow in Madrid since the last edition of Forward_MAD in October 2022, partly due to the end of global travel restrictions.According to Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), around 6.04 international tourists visited the Madrid region in 2022, in addition to the nearly 11 million trips made by Spanish tourists to the region in the same period. From January to July 2023, the

volume of international tourists visiting the region grew by around 24 percent, with the United States, France, Mexico and Italy as the main outbound markets.

According to Madrid Destino, from January to July this year, 3.64 million travellers stayed overnight in hotels in the Spanish capital. 2.33 million chose a four-star hotel and nearly 424,000 tourists stayed in five-star hotels, an increase of 8.9 and 7.3 percent compared to 2022. Madrid currently has 36 five-star and luxury hotels, three more than in 2022. 57.2 percent of the guests in these hotels are international.

The luxury tourism segment has a greater impact on the economy because of the higher spending travellers make in the destinations they visit. For example, the average daily rate (ADR) for hotels in Madrid is 139.98 euros, while the ADR for four- and five-star hotels is 202.98 euros and 280.96 euros, respectively. The average revenue per available room is 99.94 euros, while in four- and five-star hotels it is more than 133 and 172 euros.

New research has found the iconic filming locations for popular Netflix shows that viewers can actually go and visit. From Emily in Paris to Bridgerton, language experts at Busuu have found the Netflix filming locations where visitors can look round and explore to channel their favourite shows. Fans of Netflix’s most-watched series, Squid Game, can visit the cornershop where Gi-hun met the old man and Bridgerton watchers can tour round the grand manor houses where the families on the show live and host their extravagant balls.

Many people may think that Netflix just uses built sets to film the most popular shows, but many fan favourites are actually shot on location. Visitors can tour round these sites and cities to see the famous locations featured in their favourite shows for themselves.  A spokesperson for Busuu said: “There have certainly been times where we imagine ourselves within the world of our favourite Netflix shows. And luckily for us fans, there are plenty of locations you can actually visit and tour round to explore the sites where your favourite Netflix show was filmed.

“You can imagine yourself at a magnificent Bridgerton ball at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, or picture a true Emily in Paris lifestyle as you watch the world go by along the Place de l’Estrapade in the heart of the French capital, and grab a delicious pastry from the bakery she regularly visits.

“Berlin and Madrid are both cities which hosted a lot of filming for Netflix hits The Queen’s Gambit and Money Heist respectively. Berlin has some fascinating historic architecture which featured on the show and Madrid offers a walking tour of the city to stop by at all the famous locations used in Money Heist.”

Here are Busuu’s favourite Netflix locations you can actually visit:

1. Seoul, South Korea – Squid Game

Netflix K-dramas are a massive hit with viewers across the world and Squid Game tops the list of the most-watched Netflix series. The show was largely filmed on several sets in South Korea, but Seoul did feature throughout the show as the home city of Squid Game contestants. The protagonist Gi-hun’s neighbourhood was the Ssangmun-dong district.

It’s in this neighbourhood where Sang Woo’s mother has her fish stall at the Baegun Market. The marketplace does exist in real life and visitors to Seoul can take a trip over. The cornershop where Gi-hun first meets the old man is open for tourists too, found on Uicheon-ro 39-gil, shop number 11.

2. Hatfield House, Hertfordshire – Bridgerton

This grand Jacobean manor house was one of the on-site filming locations for Netflix’s Bridgerton, featuring as the site for Lady Trowbridge’s ball in season one of the show. The house itself is a popular spot for other TV shows and films, and has specific open days for the public to explore around the house and its grounds.

There are many other famous filming locations to visit in the UK where Bridgerton was shot – like Ranger’s House in London which hosts an impressive art collection and No.1 Royal Crescent in Bath which is also a museum dedicated to showing visitors Georgian interior and lifestyles.

3. The Place de l’Estrapade, Paris – Emily in Paris

Emily and Gabriel live in a charming building in this square which also hosts several of the famous filming locations featured throughout Emily in Paris. The Boulangerie Moderne bakery which Emily regularly buys yummy pastries from, exists in real life and is now a tourist hotspot for delicious French croissants. Gabriel’s restaurant, the ‘Les Deux Compères’, was also filmed here – but is the Terra Nera Italian restaurant in real life.

The Place de l’Estrapade itself is an attractive Parisian square with gorgeous architecture, fountains, benches and trees for Emily in Paris fans to enjoy a tranquil visit and watch the world go by.

4. Berlin, Germany – The Queen’s Gambit

Although The Queen’s Gambit is set in midwestern America, Berlin featured as a top filming location for the Netflix series. Visitors to Germany’s capital city can check out several of the sites where Beth goes to in the show.

Beth’s Cincinnati chess tournament was filmed in the grand Spandau town hall and the well-known Meistersaal chamber music hall. And Berlin’s biggest ballroom, the Palais am Messe-Funkturm, was used for the US Open scenes.

5. Plaza de Callao, Madrid – Money Heist

The hit Spanish crime thriller was filmed in several locations around Madrid. For security reasons Netflix were not allowed to film the outside of the Royal Mint of Spain, and instead used the Spanish National Research Council building in the city – although the inside is not open to the public, it is a popular spot on the city’s walking tour of all the famous sites which were featured in Money Heist.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has been appointed by real estate firm Gruppo Statuto to manage Rosewood Milan, which will open in 2025 in the heart of the city. The new property marks the brand’s fourth hotel in Italy, following the recent announcements of Rosewood Rome and Rosewood Hotel Bauer in Venice. These three projects will join Rosewood’s beloved Italian estate resort, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany, and demonstrate Rosewood’s strategic growth trajectory across Europe and within Italy particularly.

Rosewood Milan will be well-situated on the edge of the Quadrilatero della Moda, the city’s fashion district, and steps away from the famous shopping boulevard Via Montenapoleone, lined with iconic luxury boutiques, antique shops and bustling cafés. With 70 rooms, including approximately 20 suites, the property will encompass the historic and iconic Palazzo Branca and Palazzo della Banca Commerciale built in the 19th century and formerly home to the Italian Commercial Bank. This project is a welcome addition to Rosewood’s portfolio of revitalized historic buildings and properties, further illustrating the brand’s role as a thoughtful steward of time-honored spaces.

Guided by Rosewood’s A Sense of Place® philosophy, wherein the destination informs every element of the experience, the property will evoke the romantic grandeur of historic Milan juxtaposed with a contemporary design, blending seamlessly into this culturally rich and vibrant metropolis. Influences from the city’s role as a hub of global fashion will be evident throughout the property’s offerings, creating an urban oasis perfect for the creative luminaries that regularly pass through Milan.

Renowned Parisian firm Studio K.O. will oversee the design, creating a space that is eclectic, colorful and timeless all at once, melding classical details with modern touches that breathe new life and energy into the grand, historic building while respecting its cultural heritage. Rosewood Milan will be home to a bar and restaurant with a courtyard and garden, poised to become lively gathering spots that mirror the pulsating energy of the city. The property will also house the Asaya® wellness facility with three treatment rooms, an indoor pool and fitness center.

“This development comes with great excitement as we continue our growth in Europe and Italy specifically,” says Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer at Rosewood Hotel Group. “Rosewood continues to expand to destinations where we know our ‘affluential explorer’ guests want to travel. With all its culture and vitality, Milan ticks all the boxes for a Rosewood urban location and it will round out our portfolio of global fashion capitals where Rosewood has a presence, including our iconic properties in New York, Paris and London.”

“We are thrilled to partner with a brand such as Rosewood to bring these historic buildings back to life” says Giuseppe Statuto, chairman of Gruppo Statuto. “By merging our shared experiences and philosophies, we know this hotel will become an immediate icon of high hospitality in Milan — a trend-setting city that increasingly stands out in the world as an unmissable destination for international travelers and locals alike.”

Rosewood Milan is the latest hotel announcement for the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts® brand, adding to a strong pipeline of projects set to open in Europe in the coming years, in Munich, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Rome, London and Venice. Rosewood Milan will join the brand’s existing portfolio of hotels and resorts across Europe, including Rosewood Vienna; Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany; Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel in Paris; Rosewood Villa Magna in Madrid and Rosewood London.

Set in the center of Madrid’s cultural, artistic and culinary scene, Radisson Hotel Group opens its first Radisson RED in Spain, welcoming the vibrant lifestyle brand to the country. Located on Calle de Atocha, one of the main bustling avenues in Madrid and in the heart of the Golden Triangle of Art, Radisson RED Madrid is steps away from some of the world’s most renowned art museums, galleries and UNESCO heritage sites. The hotel is a culinary destination in its own right, featuring three offerings from 5-star Michelin chef Eneko Atxa, one of which is situated on the rooftop providing unrivalled city views. The opening of the first Radisson RED in Spain is part of the Group’s ambitious growth plan to open 20 new hotels within the next five years, following the recent successful openings of Radisson Collection Hotel, Magdalena Plaza Sevilla, Radisson Collection Hotel Gran Vía Bilbao, and Radisson Blu 1882 Hotel, Barcelona Sagrada Familia.

Radisson RED Madrid occupies a historic site, originally an industrial building used as a sawmill in the 1800s before becoming a hotel 100 years later. Now on arrival, guests are welcomed by a red, statement sculpture of a bear and a tree, which takes center stage at the hotel’s entrance. The sculpture takes inspiration from the city’s original bear and strawberry tree monument which is situated in the Puerta del Sol square and represents the symbols of Madrid.

The hotel features 260 modern rooms, 10 of which are suites. Each of the rooms and suites embody Radisson RED’s signature design-focused bold, cutting-edge design and creative artwork, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows, and balconies with city views. Artwork seen throughout the property is inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as by works seen at the nearby Prado Museum. The Radisson RED art collection aims to be flexible, connecting with the guests’ global mindset. The hotel interiors are welcoming guests to the lobby with cozy, comfortable seating, and warm lighting. Local touches are seen in the elevators, where panels are upholstered using the typical fabrics of Madrid.

Situated just 500 meters away from Madrid Atocha railway station, Radisson RED Madrid is located in proximity of renowned heritage sites and art museums. Among these are the internationally-acclaimed Museo Reina Sofia, known for its impressive collection of 20th century paintings; the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the second largest private collection in the world after the British Royal Collection; and the iconic Prado Museum, home to the world’s largest and most important collection of Goya and Velázquez paintings, as well as works by many other Spanish and foreign artists. The hotel is also only few meters away from the Royal Botanic Gardens, as well as the Landscape of Light, recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Radisson RED Madrid will be home to three signature culinary experiences by 5-star Michelin chef, Eneko Atxa. On the ground floor, guests can enjoy Basque and Japanese fusion cuisine at NKO, which first opened earlier this year at Radisson Collection Hotel, Gran Vía Bilbao, while the rooftop terrace will feature Nigiri Basque House by NKO, offering impressive panoramic views of the Madrid skyline and the perfect photo opportunity while enjoying Atxa’s signature, original nigiris. Both restaurants will open in early November. A third culinary experience, DeBokata, will be a takeaway corner where Atxa will pay tribute to his favorite street foods by serving different takes on sandwiches with a touch of innovation, as well as offering takeaway cocktails and craft beers. The hotel’s lobby also has a bar, Oso Rojo, featuring cocktails, live music on selected days and an all-day menu including light snacks, sandwiches and small plates.

Tom Flanagan Karttunen, Area Senior Vice President for Northern & Western Europe at Radisson Hotel Group says, “We’re extremely proud to open the doors to Spain’s first Radisson RED property. The brand showcases a playful twist on the conventional with a strong focus on art and design, which is celebrated throughout the hotel. This new property fits right into the city’s vibrant offering, and we can’t wait to introduce it to the local and international market.”

Sam Bath, General Manager of Radisson RED Madrid, says, “Radisson RED Madrid is the perfect addition to this cosmopolitan city. Thoughtful local touches, including the statement bear and strawberry tree sculpture at the hotel’s entrance, promise to create a truly unique and dynamic experience for guests. Complete with exciting culinary options, a lively bar, and spacious lobby with upbeat music and quirky design pieces, Radisson RED Madrid will be an urban getaway like no other.”

Alongside the hotel’s cool communal spaces where locals and guests can gather and socialize, a gym featuring the latest fitness equipment will open in early November. Radisson RED Madrid also provides the perfect location for any type of meeting or celebration. Facilities include a large main meeting area as well as more intimate meeting spaces for up to 12 people with a terrace, offering spectacular views of Madrid. These elegant and sophisticated areas blend high tech with playful design to create the ideal spot for business events or social functions. The hotel operates a digitalized check-in and check-out service, allowing guests to maximize their time in Madrid and explore the rich cultural attractions the city has to offer, as well as app-based service personalisation and BYOD (bring your own device) for Chromecast connection.

With the health and safety of guests and team members as its top priority, Radisson RED Madrid is implementing the Radisson Hotels Safety Protocol program. The in-depth cleanliness and disinfection protocols were developed in partnership with SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification company, and are designed to ensure guest safety and peace of mind from check-in to check-out.

14 months ago, during the Navidad semano (Christmas week) whilst the Covid-19 pandemic was silently creeping its assault around the world, I was fortunate to visit the world’s oldest restaurant in Madrid, while on a holiday to Spain.

Situated in the medieval Austrias area of Madrid, the 295-year-old Botín restaurant was founded by Jean Botín in 1725 and has been in the González family since 1930, now for four generations. The restaurant has been visited by people from all over the world, including royalty, politicians, writers, and Hollywood stars, and features in the Guinness book of records as the oldest restaurant in the world.

Though the wine cellar originated in 1590, the restaurant above the cellar was founded as ‘Casa Botin’ by a French Chef, Jean Botin in 1725, who moved to Spain and married an Asturian lady. As they did not have children, Mrs. Botin’s nephews took over after Jean Botin and hence the name you see even today, splayed across the external façade: “Restaurante Sobrino de Botin Horno de Asar” which may be translated as ‘Restaurant Botin’s Nephews – Roasting Oven.’ Interestingly, the restaurant has kept the said oven’s flame burning continuously, never to be extinguished.

2015 apparently was Botin restaurant’s best year on record with an average footfall of 600 guests per day. At an APC (F&B combined) of €72 that works out to a very decent annual turnover of € 15-16 million (equivalent to INR130 crores). Note that the restaurant menu is not at all highly-priced… something they have kept as part of their business strategy through all the years.

We were unable to get a reservation online though I kept trying for nearly a month prior to the trip. However, when I visited the restaurant personally, I was able to get a booking, albeit for 2300h the subsequent evening, Sunday. Well, who were we to grumble at the reservation time, as the local “Madrileños” begin their evening dinners only post 2100h? Besides, who would want to miss out on eating in this iconic restaurant?

After a long day of touring, at 2000h, we decided to take a chance and check if the Botin Restaurant would accept us as early diners. We honestly expected the service team to be ‘hoity-toity’ about their reputation, and that they would expect their guests to grovel for a table; especially if they landed up 3 hours early… after all we were so fortunate to be dining in a piece of history, right?

Fortuitously, we were met by the same waiter who had taken our reservation the previous day and he was kind enough to check his register and then check with the restaurant manager, Luís Javier Sánchez Alvarez, who has worked at the restaurant for 41 years. Alvarez was very convivial and welcoming – he immediately asked the host to accommodate us… so up we followed him to their second floor, thoroughly elated at not just being able to dine early, but also at the warm reception. (Something we had honestly never expected!)

The restaurant has four floors, which maintain the quaint atmosphere of a traditional tavern. Alvarez the manager, explains why the Horno de Asar, the restaurant’s famous oven’s fire has never been extinguished. “It is our jewel. Our crown jewel. The oven has been burning continuously for 295 years,” he says. “We never put it out. It needs to be kept hot at night and be ready to roast in the morning. That’s the reason why we must never put it out. There is a special aroma in there; it’s truly incredible.”

Our meal consisted of Restaurant Botin’s famous specialties Cochinillo Asado (roast suckling pig) and Sopa de Ajo (an egg, poached in chicken broth, and laced with sherry and garlic) and these were truly delicious and certainly stood up for their reputation!

Our experience was truly delightful right from entry to exit that evening and it set me thinking as to what makes a restaurant succeed for three centuries altogether?

Giving importance to their local guests who make up 55% of their clientele and keeping their rates fairly reasonable is part of their business strategy; and while their cuisine is delectable, the ambience outstanding and so steeped in tradition and culture, what also stands out is the warm caring service we experienced – right from the manager to the steward – who in spite of servicing over 600 guests that Sunday evening still made us feel special by heeding to our request for an earlier table reservation and thereafter serving us with the same élan or elegancia we noticed around other tables… it seems they have been living and breathing their ethos to posterity… hence the centuries of successful evolution, whilst yet maintaining traditiciones from the past three centuria!

BestCities Global Alliance, a community of 12 cities around the world, dedicated to the betterment of international conferences and meetings, believes, naturally, that the right partner is an essential component in planning and development of any MICE event.

Expanding on the philosophy Paul Vallee, MD of BestCities – whose members include Berlin, Bogotá, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Houston, Madrid, Melbourne, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver —  opens up and gives the low down on the importance of partnerships and how to find the right organisation to work and some of the challenges.

Paul Vallee speaking at the China International-Tourism Industry Expo in Guangdong, 2017

Why are partnerships so important?

We seek out partners to be able to do things we wouldn’t be able to on your own, to expand our skillsets, resources, and offerings. That’s how you create something of value. The beauty of a partnership, to me, is working together to complement one another and to build something creative and fresh that one may not have otherwise been able to do. That’s the primary advantage and the purpose of partnering. BestCities as an alliance has built its foundations on partnerships and works to help destinations and associations identify partnerships that would work for them.

Berlin Cathedral, Germany
Berlin Cathedral, Berlin

How can an organisation find the right partner for them?

Finding the right partner in association work is no different to finding a personal relationship or partner. You have to consider your association’s needs and areas of strength, using that as a basis to define where the best fit lies. What is it that will make you as an organisation prosper?

The best way to identify a suitable partner is to find those who are complimentary to what it is that you are doing. It’s not about the similarities, it’s the differences that organisations may have that can make the partnership flourish – meaning that even the more unconventional pairings shouldn’t be ruled out when considering a partnership.

When an association is considering a partnership, they need to find a party that are willing to put in an equal amount of effort – which takes shape in various forms, from money to time, as well as resources, knowledge and man power.

Bogotá, Colombia
Bogotá, Colombia

What are the key benefits of a partnership?

The key elements where partnerships can benefit an organisation are, like anything in business, improving the bottom line, whether it’s financial or otherwise, increasing sales and enhancing reputation. Those benefits can be reaped through:

  • Knowledge sharing; sharing of practises, skillsets and expertise across industry/destination/association.
  • Efficient use of resources; using partners to save time and combine forces reduces and prevents redundant work that you can do by finding a like-minded partner.
  • Brand association; partnering up with an organisation that already has an existing strong brand reputation in either your own market or another market you want to break into is critical.
Cape Town, South Africa

What’s an example of an effective partnership that you have observed?

One that I have overseen and have been closest to would be between BestCities and ICCA, because while we exist in the same sphere, we are not exactly the same. We work together with ICCA on various programmes that give back to the industry, such as the recognition programme and Incredible Impacts. We’re a business and a global alliance, whereas they are an association that works in education and holding conferences. They offer areas of skills and expertise that we don’t have and vice versa.

“Successful outcomes for all parties and a path to that success”

The foundation of any partnership is to establish what it is you’re hoping to achieve, what does success look like, and how you plan to deliver it. That’s the basis of what a successful partnership is; identifying successful outcomes for all parties and a path to that success. In the case of BestCities and ICCA, our idea of success was to recognise associations that are doing outstanding work and legacy development to support associations and collectively build our reputation in the industry overall.

Tokyo, Japan

What common challenges do associations need to overcome in partnerships?

There are definitely challenges that can arise when establishing a partnership. One thing to consider is that ‘no partner is more important that the other’. Regardless of the scale of the organisation, its key to avoid a hierarchal partnership, as each organisation involved should be bringing an equal amount of value to the collaboration. Another potential challenge is being able to agree upon and streamline the common goal and objective to work towards. You’ve got to be tolerant, you’ve got to be flexible, you’ve got to trust one another and recognise that each partner has strengths and weaknesses – understanding and overcoming cultural or operational differences.

“You have to have champions”

Consider your expectations. One cannot expect the other partner to commit to doing something that you would not do yourself. You have to establish clear direction as partners and agreeing what success looks like in terms of the partnership itself and how it impacts all parties involved. Finally, you have to have champions who are able to look outwardly, as opposed to the typical scenario where associations can be very internally focused. Establishing a partnership adds another layer to the association and the benefits of this should be communicated and shared.

Melbourne, Australia

Where do you see the future of collaboration and partnership with associations going and BestCities’ role within that?

When associations and destinations find common ground, great things can happen. For example, an association that specialises in the eradication of a disease will find common ground from destinations that wants to improve the health of the citizens. Or for instance, an association whose purpose is to reduce child poverty is really no different to a destination who wants to see their young people survive and thrive.

“Inspire associations to look outwards”

What we’re moving towards is associations taking advantage of the benefits of collaboration and partnership in refreshing new ways, using these to extend offers and working towards a better future that benefits all. That’s a partnership to me.

A key element of BestCities’ mission is to inspire associations to look outwards, beyond your own organisations, industries and existing skillsets, learning from other associations, destinations and industries to enhance each other’s abilities and enrich our industry.

Vancouver, Canada

How does BestCities decide on which destinations to join its partnership?

There are key criteria for the Alliance when considering new destinations joining the partnership. Among many things, we consider destinations that have demonstrated leadership in working towards joint goals, being accountable for results, having open and honest communications and thinking long term.

We look for partners that demonstrate a track record in partnering and collaboration, with a compelling reputation, which adds value to the Alliance through everything from cultural diversity, geographic balance and client reach. Furthermore, we look for general compatibility – from agreement to subscribe to BestCities commitments and Code of Ethics, to destination appeal, positive environmental reputation, cultural sensitivity and political stability.

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of its flights to key destinations on three continents later this year.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

The launch of Air India’s new route to Madrid this week will mark the start of a period of significant expansion for the national carrier.

The new service from Delhi to the Spanish capital on 1 December 2016 will mark the airline’s arrival in Spain. And Air India’s chairman & managing director, Ashwani Lohani, revealed by Twitter that following this launch, the national carrier planned to add a further six destinations to its route map next year.

“Madrid connection starts on 1st Dec to be followed by another at least six new connections in 2017. Great expansion plans for Air India,” Lohani told his social media followers.

While the details of the new routes were not revealed, it has been reported that Air India is planning to launch its first flights to the African continent, as well as Tel Aviv and Washington DC. Earlier this year Air India launched flights to Vienna.

Capital Airlines, the Beijing-based airline, has resumed its weekly flight between Hangzhou and Madrid.

Flights will now run every Friday using as two-class Airbus A330 aircraft. Capital Airlines, which launched its first ever long-haul flights last year, is the currently only airline operating the Hangzhou-Madrid route.

From September 2016, it plans to increase the service to two weekly flights, including a stop in Chengdu.

The airline commenced direct services from Madrid to Shanghai this week, marking the start of a period of Asian expansion that will also see Iberia start flying to Tokyo later this year. The Shanghai route will now operate three times a week, every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

And that was not the only new service connecting Madrid and Shanghai to launch this week; China Eastern Airlines has also started operating the route, offering four weekly flights every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Last month, Cathay Pacific launched services linking Hong Kong with the Spanish capital.

Iberia plans to launch direct flights between Madrid and Tokyo’s Narita Airport on 18 October 2016.

Japan Airlines has applied for permission to add Iberia to its European joint business.

The Japanese national carrier currently coordinates its operations between Japan and Europe with British Airways and Finnair. But it has now submitted an application to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism for anti-trust immunity to create four-way venture that includes Iberia.

The move comes as Iberia, the Spanish national carrier, gears up to launch direct flights linking Madrid with Tokyo Narita Airport. This route is due to commence on 18 October 2016 and will mark Iberia’s arrival in the Far East.

“We are pleased to welcome Iberia into our joint business,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, JAL’s president. “This will strengthen JAL’s presence in Spain, and provide our customers with more convenience to Madrid and beyond.”

If anti-trust immunity is approved, the new route will be added to the four airlines’ joint business, which sees them coordinate flight schedules and fares and share revenues on a series of routes linking Japan’s Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka airports with European destinations including London, Helsinki and Paris.

Iberia’s new Madrid-Narita service will initially operate three times a week, with plans to increase the frequency in future.

Like BA, Finnair and JAL, Iberia is a member of the oneworld alliance.

The Shanghai-based airline dropped its route to the Spanish capital in 2003, but it has now been confirmed that flights will resume on 28 June 2016.

The return flight will then leave the Spanish capital at 2255 on the same days, and arrive back into Shanghai at 1820 the following evening.

China Eastern will deploy a 232-seat, two-class Airbus A330 aircraft on the route, configured with 30 seats in business class and 202 in economy.

Two other Chinese airlines currently operate scheduled flights to Madrid, namely Air China from Beijing and Capital Airlines from Hangzhou. Spain’s national carrier Iberia is also expected to launch three weekly flights between Madrid and Shanghai in October 2016.

Norwegian has opened another European base

Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced it will launch flights from London to Madrid as it plans to open a base in the Spanish city.

The new London service will operate daily from 2 June and will compete with major British and Spanish carriers on the route, which is in addition to six other services from Madrid.

It will launch when Norwegian opens its Madrid base next summer, which will be its fifth in Spain. In addition to the London service, the airline will also connect Madrid to Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg, Warsaw and Copenhagen.

Norwegian has been steadily building its European airline bases in the last year, which also includes Gatwick.

“We have decided to open a new base in Madrid to meet the demand for direct flights between the Spanish capital and important cities in Europe. We see a major passenger potential from the main airport in Madrid. At the same time, it is strategically important for Norwegian to have a base in the Spanish capital in light of our presence in the Spanish market and not least, in term of our future plans,” says Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.

Dubai’s advanced infrastructure and high-level of connectivity should help the emirate edge the competition as it steps up its bid to become the world’s largest international air hub by 2018, according to president of Emirates airline, Tim Clark.

Clark mentioned that he was confident the airport could be adapted to accommodate the increased number of airliners that Emirates planned to bring in over the coming years. “Dubai Airport’s ‘SP2020’ plan will enable capacity at Dubai International to rise from 60 million to 90 million passengers by 2018,” he said. “The paramount advantage that Dubai must continue to leverage is its superior infrastructure”. Head here for the full story
