Flight EI 45 to New York JFK, marks the start of Aer Lingus’ UK direct services from Manchester to the United States. Aer Lingus UK will operate direct from Manchester to New York, JKF from 1st December and from Manchester to Orlando from 11th December. Aer Lingus recently launched its first direct flight from Manchester to Barbados on 20th October.

Aer Lingus is celebrating two years of flying direct from Manchester Airport across the  Atlantic, having flown up to half a million passengers since it launched services in October 2021.

The direct flights were introduced by the Irish carrier in response to increased customer demand and  over the last two years have increased in capacity as Aer Lingus has captured more of the market.

Those travelling from Greater Manchester and the North of England have benefitted from a great  selection of fares, destinations and an attractive onboard product.

This has seen Aer Lingus increase seat capacity by 63,000 additional seats in April of this year, by  switching the single aisle A321LR to a second widebody Airbus A330 on its Manchester fleet. When Aer  Lingus first began operations from Manchester, it did so operating with a single A330 and one Airbus  A321LR.

The two A330 aircraft serve direct daily flights to New York’s JFK and operate four times a week to  Orlando, Florida from the end of October. The carrier’s winter schedule will be boosted by the return of  Caribbean flights direct to Barbados, with the seasonal service starting on 1 November, operating three  times a week.

Susanne Carberry, Aer Lingus Chief Customer Officer, said: “We’re proud to have increased choice for  consumers in the North of England, who can now travel directly to destinations as diverse as New York,  Orlando and Barbados, in addition to the eleven flights a day operated by Aer Lingus from Manchester  to Dublin and Belfast.

“We look forward to developing our offering and providing great value for our customers, combined  with great service and a warm Irish welcome.”

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: We’re proud to serve the people of the North by  connecting them to the places they want to go with a route network unrivalled outside London.

“Few places epitomise the glamour, excitement and fun of international travel quite like New York and  Orlando and it’s great to think that over half a million people in the last two years will have experienced  them through our partnership with Aer Lingus.

“Passengers in the North are able to fly directly from Manchester to destinations as varied as America,  Barbados and, of course, Dublin with Aer Lingus. This partnership helps us connect the North with the  world and we’re looking forward to continuing and building on this in the years to come.”

The success of Aer Lingus’ Manchester based long-haul operations has contributed towards its  ambitious network expansion to North American destinations, offering yet more choice to its customers.

In August, the airline announced a new direct service to Denver, Colorado and revealed the re-launch of  the Minneapolis-St. Paul route from Dublin as part of its summer 2024 programme.

Flights to Minneapolis-St Paul launch on April 29, 2024, increasing from four-times weekly to a daily  year-round service from next October, served by the carrier’s newest aircraft, the A321XLR from Winter 2024. Flights to Denver from Dublin will also operate four times a week, starting from May 17, 2024.

Customers travelling with Aer Lingus can expect a warm and friendly Irish welcome on the airline’s three  direct transatlantic services from Manchester, as well as enjoying in-flight dining and free access to a  world of entertainment, thanks to its state-of-the-art inflight entertainment service.

Aer Lingus has great value winter fares from Manchester’s three direct transatlantic destinations. Fly to  New York from £349 return, to Orlando from £379 return from 1st November to Barbados from £498  return including all taxes and charges.*

Strong performance across airport properties and gateway cities has driven growth within Aimbridge EMEA’s growing UK portfolio, outpacing pre-pandemic levels. Aimbridge EMEA has reported an average of 15 percent uplift in RevPAR across its UK portfolio against 2019, with certain locations doubling that performance at points during 2022. The growth follows a strong year for the third-party management company which has seen multiple property signings and openings.

Key areas of RevPAR growth within the portfolio included airport properties and gateway cities such as Edinburgh, Birmingham and Newcastle, as the travel industry recovered from the impact of Covid-19 and inbound visits to the UK increased in response to the drop in the value of Pound Sterling. Domestic travel also remained strong in the wake of the pandemic.

During the year, Aimbridge EMEA, formerly known as Interstate Hotels & Resorts, signed and opened a number of new properties including Mercure Newport, Hilton London T5 Heathrow Airport, the ibis budget and Holiday Inn hotels at Manchester Airport and Holiday Inn Express Brussels.

Most recently, it was selected to operate the renowned luxury Belsfield Hotel in the Lake District, asserting the company’s presence within the independent hotel sector. Part of the global Aimbridge Hospitality family, Aimbridge EMEA now manages more than 120 hotels throughout the EMEA region, including signed pipeline properties.

Carol Dodds, senior vice president – Commercial, at Aimbridge EMEA, said: “It’s been a strong year, particularly for our airport hotels and across the gateway cities. We’ve signed new properties, including the 350-bed Hilton London T5 Hotel at Heathrow and the prestigious Belsfield Hotel at Lake Windermere in the Lake District.

“Our portfolio continues to grow and we exceed market share across the country. To see our RevPAR levels grow by more than 15 percent, which is tracking ahead of industry averages, signals really robust growth, well surpassing pre Covid-19 levels.

“This growth and the continuing expansion of our portfolio is particularly notable against the backdrop of a year where the industry has faced incredibly difficult headwinds.

“From supply chain challenges to energy price hikes and skills shortages, we’re continuing to help our owners navigate these tough times, using our clout as part of the global Aimbridge Hospitality family to minimise impact wherever possible.

“This has included initiatives such as introducing apprenticeship schemes to upskill workers and establishing global partnership deals with suppliers to keep overheads low. “We’ll be continuing this work into 2023 with the aim of holding strong and maintaining positive growth for our properties, in spite of the many challenges that face the sector.”

Aimbridge EMEA expanded its team earlier this year, too, with several key appointments across the UK, Europe and the CIS. The new hires joined Aimbridge in development and operational roles, cementing the company’s commitment to driving future growth across international territories.

David Anderson, Aimbridge EMEA’s divisional president, said: “The last 12 months have seen our team grow and our portfolio flourish, as we debuted the new Aimbridge EMEA brand and invested in talent to benefit our owners, through reinforced and strengthened services.

“We look forward to continuing to provide our owners with an unparalleled level of service into 2023 and beyond, across both the branded and independent hotel sectors, showcasing our expertise as we welcome more best in class hotels into the growing Aimbridge EMEA portfolio.”

The Aimbridge Hospitality global portfolio, inclusive of managed and pipeline properties, now stands at more than 1,500 hotels in over 20 countries. Interstate Hotels & Resorts, which merged with Aimbridge Hospitality in 2019, moved under the Aimbridge corporate identity in October 2022.

Qatar Airways is increasing its flight frequency from Manchester Airport to three flights per day from 14 June in another show of confidence in the UK market. The route launched in April 2003 and went double-daily in February 2011. The move to the triple daily flights will see an increase in capacity of approximately 35% on the route.

Introducing triple daily services will give passengers greater choice to travel onto a wide range of flights operated by Qatar Airways, the most popular of which from Manchester include Bangkok, Thailand; Perth, Australia; Bali, Indonesia; Male, Maldives and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Gary Kershaw, country manager for UK & Ireland, Qatar Airways commented: “Since launching in 2011, Manchester has performed exceptionally well, proving to be one of our most successful UK routes. The demand from our customers meant it was only a matter of time before we increased our flight frequency, and we are delighted to offer passengers increased choice and flexibility with the launch of our triple daily flights from the airport.”

The regular flights from Manchester are a key component of Qatar Airways’ operations in the UK, with the airline also flying from Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London. The increase is part of a series of additional flights announced by the airline from the UK and Ireland this summer – marking the airline’s biggest ever number of connections between the UK & Ireland and Doha.

To help avoid these airport blues, Netflights.com has taken a sneak peek into airport lounges around the world, to see if your time can be spent being less stressed and more travel happy.

Airports can be stressful experiences, even for the calmest of travellers. From uncontrollable delays and immeasurable queues, to strict suitcase weight limits and expensive food options, there’s plenty to get people agitated. It’s more commonplace than you might expect. A new research by Netflights.com revealed that 66% of UK travellers find airports stressful.

To ease – or intensify – this stress, the average person spent GBP 58.77 (USD 77) in the run up to boarding their flight. Most of this cash goes on food (53%), hot drinks (44%) and alcohol (28%). Almost half of the respondents (46%) also admitted to purchasing items they didn’t even need – as something to do before jetting off.

Lounge access

Collating data from 149 lounges around the world, Netflights uncovered what you can expect to pay where, and what you’ll get. The amenities in each lounge were weighed up against its cost and applied some data science magic to give you a score showing whether it could be worth booking.

With the average cost of accessing an airport lounge only at about GBP 37.32, with free Wi-Fi, inclusive drinks and premium food all available, there’s plenty of reasons to be more chilled out than wound up.

Scoring the number one spot in our ranking of best-value lounges is the Al Ghaza Lounge in Abu Dhabi International Airport

Scoring the number one spot in our ranking of best-value lounges is the Al Ghazal Lounge in Abu Dhabi International Airport – it’s low-cost, exuberant interior and efficient amenities mean it topped the list of lounges worldwide. The best value in the UK is Manchester Airport at GBP 25. London Heathrow costs GBP 40 and London Gatwick GBP 50.

Despite these low prices, the research revealed that 87% of travellers have never booked themselves or their families into a lounge as they thought it was too expensive (40%), only for members (23%), or they just didn’t know how to do so (20%).

Opening up travel between India and the North of England, with its latest direct connection to Manchester, Jet Airways will become the largest carrier between the UK and Mumbai.

Starting 5 November 2018, India’s premier international airline will launch the first non-stop service between Manchester and Mumbai. Further strengthening its flight offering in the United Kingdom and Jet Airways’ commitment to opening up travel to India for UK business and leisure travellers, the service will operate four days a week including MondayThursdaySaturday and Sunday.

Given Manchester’s position as Europe’s second largest digital hub, the new service between Manchester and Mumbai is likely to benefit a large number of business travellers, as well as making travel more convenient for the growing Indian community, including both families and students, now residing in and around Manchester and holiday makers in the region. It will also connect surrounding cities such as Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield to India.

Manchester will become the 66th addition to the Jet Airways network and its 21st international destination. With the introduction of the new flight – the carrier’s 5th non-stop service to/from the UK, Jet Airways will also become the largest carrier between Mumbai and the UK.

The launch of this new service will provide seamless connectivity to nearly 35 domestic destinations to and from India which include Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bhuj, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Indore, Aurangabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Nagpur, Rajkot, Raipur, Udaipur, via the airline’s HUB in Mumbai.

Similarly, quick connections to beyond points on Jet Airways’ international network such as Bangkok, Colombo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dhaka and Kathmandu, will now be available.

“The new service will complement the carrier’s existing three daily, non-stop services between London Heathrow and Mumbai”

The new service will complement the carrier’s existing three daily, non-stop services between London Heathrow and Mumbai, and once a day service between London Heathrow and Delhi. The launch of the new route comes one year after the airline launched three new international services to Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, from Amsterdam, Paris and London respectively.

Vinay Dube, Chief Executive Officer, Jet Airways said: “We are extremely pleased to begin a new chapter in our decade-long relationship with the United Kingdom. The new service will bring Manchester into our global network, reinforcing our global footprint, as well as expanding the choice of connectivity to and from the United Kingdom for our guests with the four days a week, non-stop service. With the new flight, Jet Airways will have over 8,000 seats on offer every week, making it increasingly convenient for both business and leisure travellers to travel between UK and India. Having announced in March that it would be increasing the number of weekly flights to the northern English city to six by the end of the year, the airline is boosting frequency further in response to growing customer demand.

From June onwards, the Airbus A350-900 will replace the Boeing 777-300ER on all flights to Manchester, making it the second Cathay Pacific destination in the UK, after Gatwick, to receive the aircraft.

Cathay Pacific Director Corporate Development and IT Paul Loo said: “We have been delighted by the popularity of our Manchester route ever since its launch in December 2014 and our frequency increases are a direct result of us responding to the needs of our customers. The enhanced schedule will provide business and leisure travellers with more choice and greater flexibility in planning their trips for added convenience, while at the same time strengthening Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s leading aviation hub.”

Cathay Pacific is the largest operator of flights between Hong Kong and the UK. The airline serves London Heathrow with five daily flights, while Gatwick, currently a four times-weekly service, will go daily from 1 June.

“We have served the UK for over 35 years – London was our first European destination – and it is unquestionably one of our most important markets. This announcement underscores not only our commitment to the UK but also to expanding our operations around the globe,” added Loo.

After 35 months of consecutive growth, the UK’s third largest airport flew through the 26 million annual passenger mark in February. The continued growth over the last year has meant Manchester Airport is now in Europe’s Top 20 busiest airports.

1,659,843 passengers used the Northern gateway in February – an 11% increase on 2016.  Staggered half terms for children across the airport’s wider catchment area and expanded winter programmes from the likes of Ryanair, Flybe, easyJet and Jet2.com has helped to drive the growth.  Plus the continued growth to long haul destinations can be attributed to the increase.

February saw Royal Air Maroc announce flights to Casablanca, Saudia Airlines announce flights to Riyadh and Ryanair announce a new route to Frankfurt.  March will also see the start of direct flights to San Francisco and Boston with Virgin Atlantic.

Ken O’Toole, Manchester Airport CEO, said: “It’s been another strong month of growth for Manchester Airport and passing the 26 million passenger mark is another important milestone for us.

“Growth has been delivered across the board, reflecting the fact Manchester is now one of the world’s top 15 airports when it comes to the number of different destinations flown to.

“It is particularly pleasing to see the continued growth of our long haul network with the announcements of new routes to Casablanca and Riyadh giving the 22 million people in our catchment area even more choice.

“Looking ahead, new services to San Francisco, with both Virgin Atlantic and Thomas Cook, will launch shortly and deliver a boost to leisure and business passengers alike.

“We are also looking forward to pressing ahead with our £1bn Transformation Programme, which will pave the way for more growth in the years to come, at the same time as providing our passengers with world class service levels.”

Due to the extra demand aircraft movements were also up last month by 7.2%, with more than 13,200 planes taking off and landing on the airport’s two full length runways.

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of its flights to key destinations on three continents later this year.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

Thomas Cook Airlines and Manchester Airport have announced they will be returning as headline sponsors of Manchester Pride’s The Big Weekend.

As well as sponsoring the four-day event, the pair will also be sponsoring the main stage again, which will now be known as the “Thomas Cook Airlines USA Stage”.

It is the sixth consecutive year for Manchester Airport as headline sponsor, and the third for Thomas Cook Airlines. It is the second time they have sponsored the main stage at the iconic event, with the overall profile focusing on new direct flights to San Francisco from Manchester Airport by Thomas Cook Airlines, which has its headquarters at the airport.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to attend The Big Weekend. During the Bank Holiday weekend Manchester Airport is set to welcome hundreds of thousands of passengers through its three terminals.

The airline and airport will again have a Manchester Pride Parade entry, plus they plan to take a space in the Expo, which will be dedicated to talking to visitors about equal employment opportunities available at Thomas Cook Airlines and Manchester Airport.

Mark Fletcher, CEO for Manchester Pride, said; “We have true partners in Thomas Cook Airlines and Manchester Airport and couldn’t wish for more committed or supportive sponsors. Last year’s activity was a massive success and we can’t wait to see the Thomas Cook Airlines cabin crew connecting with our audience on the ‘The Thomas Cook Airlines USA Stage’ in August.

“I’m looking forward to building on the successful partnership in 2017 as we work together to promote The Big Weekend and the new routes to the USA that Thomas Cook Airlines serve directly from Manchester Airport.”

“The time is now” for Government to truly throw its weight behind the Northern Powerhouse vision.

An aerial view of Manchester Airport.
An aerial view of Manchester Airport.

That was the message delivered by Manchester Airport chief executive Ken O’Toole, as he unveiled the next phase of its £1bn Transformation Programme.

O’Toole said the airport is pressing ahead with the investment in recognition of the strength of the Northern economy and the potential for hundreds of thousands of jobs to be created in the coming years.

Delivering the opening speech at the UK Northern Powerhouse Conference in Manchester city centre, O’Toole said public and private sector leaders from across the North had ensured the Northern Powerhouse project maintained momentum over the past year.

That included Manchester Airport launching direct flights to key markets like Beijing, Houston, Los Angeles and Boston, as well as progressing with its £1bn Transformation Project, the largest private sector investment in the North.

O’Toole said a clear case had been made for investment in infrastructure projects like Northern Powerhouse Rail (HS3), which has the potential to transform the Northern economy by dramatically improving connectivity between the North’s leading cities and Manchester Airport.

But he urged Ministers to make a clear commitment to the scheme to show the Government is serious about creating a thriving and internationally competitive Northern Powerhouse.

He said:  “If the Northern Powerhouse is to be truly competitive on the global stage, it should be as easy as possible to travel from Hull to Hong Kong; Liverpool to Los Angeles and Sheffield to Singapore.

“Slashing journey times through investment in NPR could lead to the North securing direct flights to 20-30 key global markets, with millions more people in easy reach of Manchester Airport.

“It is connectivity like that that will maximize growth in sectors like life sciences, advanced manufacturing, technology and energy. It is connectivity like that that is key to delivering an Industrial Strategy that rebalances the UK economy.

“Northern Powerhouse Rail could give us that connectivity and drive transformational improvements in productivity and growth.”

O’Toole said it was clear 2017 was going to be a “very important year for the North” in terms of the need for Government support.

He added: “We have the plan – the time is now for Government to commit to it, starting in just a few weeks-time with the Budget.”

O’Toole also told delegates the the Government must seize the opportunity presented by the creation of a new national aviation policy this year to ensure that airports across the UK maximise their potential to link the UK to the world’s most important markets.

That will not be achieved unless road, rail and aviation policies are joined-up, he said, adding that strong international connectivity is key to the success of the Government’s new Industrial Strategy.

O’Toole said unlocking the potential of airports like Manchester was key to creating a “truly global Britain,” especially in the 10-15 years it will take to build a new runway at Heathrow.

And he told the conference there were short term measures Government could take to demonstrate Britain was “open for business,” such as the reform of aviation taxes, border and visa policies.

He was speaking as Manchester Airport unveiled a host of new images showing what it could look like following its £1bn investment.

He added: “We know we are among the best airports in the world when it comes to the number of different destinations on offer, whether that be Boston, Beijing or Barcelona; Houston, Hong Kong or Hamburg.

“Our £1bn Transformation Programme is all about investing in the future, so we can continue to grow by securing more direct flight services in our role as the North’s global gateway. It also about investing in our facilities and in the latest technology to provide passengers with best possible experience.”

Hainan Airlines, Manchester Airport and House of Fraser in Birmingham are set to host a Chinese New Year celebration at the city centre store.

Currently more than 52,000 people from the West Midlands travel to China each year and prior to June 2016, were forced to connect via an overseas hub or use a London airport.

That changed when Hainan Airlines launched its direct service from Manchester Airport, which flies four times a week to Beijing.

The Chinese New Year event will be a celebration of the direct route and the chance for the people of Birmingham to find out more about the airline, destination and ease of access from Manchester Airport. As well as Chinese entertainment, drinks and canapes, there will also be two return flights to Beijing to be won on the evening.

In addition Hainan Airlines and Manchester Airport will also be hosting an instore event on 21st and 22nd January where shoppers can sample the airlines business class product and be treated to Chinese window displays and entertainment.

Stephen Turner, commercial director at Manchester Airport, said: “Manchester Airport is a global gateway and offers a magnitude of routes that are not on offer anywhere else outside of London.

“Events like this allow us to inform potential passengers and key travel agents about the breadth of our offering to save their customers the time and hassle of using congested airports in the South.

“Our route to Beijing is proving to be incredibly popular with leisure and business passengers alike. The direct access unlocks a whole host of tourist, economic and investment opportunities for people from the West Midlands and China.”

Loic Gao, UK General Manager at Hainan Airlines, said: “We are looking forward to showcase our award-winning product to the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands at our Chinese New Year event.

“Using Manchester Airport, instead of flying indirectly or from London, is a huge advantage for people in the Midlands. Not only does it save time for passengers travelling on holiday or on business, it also gives access to a wealth of economic and investment opportunities with one of the world’s biggest economies.”

The event will take place between 6-9pm on Wednesday 18th January at the In House Bar in House of Fraser, Birmingham. For more information or to register attendance log on to www.hainanchinesenewyear.eventbrite.co.uk.

Effective 17 January 2017, the national carrier will operate its Airbus A350-900 aircraft on the Singapore-Manchester-Houston route, which first launched at the end of October.

This will mark the first time SIA has flown its A350 to the UK, and the aircraft’s second service to the US following Singapore-San Francisco.

Manchester Airport has issued some festive advice to passengers, ahead of what is predicted to be its busiest Christmas ever, with an increase in passengers starting this week.

During the peak Christmas travel period, from Friday 23rd December to Monday 2nd January, 640,125 passengers will be travelling through Manchester Airport, a 22% increase year-on-year.

The busiest individual days over Christmas will be 23rd and 30th December, plus 2nd January, as people jet away on holiday and fly home for Christmas.

As temperatures plummet, thick winter coats along with hats, scarves and gloves are essentials to beat the cold outdoor weather. However, at the UK’s third largest airport, passengers are being asked to remove them once inside the terminal before the security check point – to help speed up security queues and reduce waiting times.

Manchester Airport calculations show that on average, an unprepared passenger who has to the unzip zips, undo buttons, take off hats, gloves and untie a scarf at the metal detector, rather than in the queue, add over a minute per person to the security processing time. This doesn’t sound much but multiply it by thousands of passengers and it soon adds up.

The airport is also asking passengers to take careful consideration about what they put in their hand-luggage before they get to the airport to avoid Christmas presents being confiscated.

Many popular stocking fillers actually breach security regulations, typically because they contain liquids, and passengers may be asked to leave items behind if they are not compliant.

Manchester Airport has become the first in the UK to be awarded Level 3+ carbon neutral status by the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

An aircraft departs from Manchester Airport.
An aircraft departs from Manchester Airport.

The accolade was handed over by ACI Europe’s Director General, Olivier Jankovec, who met with Manchester Airport’s CEO, Ken O’Toole, to celebrate the UK first in Terminal One.

Over the last decade the airport has significantly reduced the energy it uses, saving the same amount of energy as used by 10,000 homes each year.  In addition, the airport purchases all of its electricity from renewable sources. To compensate for remaining emissions, the airport has also purchased verified carbon offsets.

Collectively, these initiatives have reduced emissions from the energy and fuel used to operate the terminals, runways and facilities at Manchester Airport from 72,000 tonnes CO2e in 2006 to zero in 2016.

Manchester Airport has invested more than £7.5 million in energy efficiency projects, working with local and national businesses to develop innovative lighting solutions. The award winning energy management team have now installed more than 25,000 low energy LED lights throughout the airport, including the first on any UK runway.

This achievement not only showcases emissions reduced by the airport, but also the work done by Manchester Airport with its partners to reduce emissions from aircraft as well as passengers and staff travelling to and from the airport.

Ken O’Toole said: “At Manchester Airport we are committed to being one of the leading European airports when it comes to environmental management.  We are proud of our track record. After a decade of hard work to reduce the amount of energy we use, I am pleased to be the first UK airport to be recognised by Airport Carbon Accreditation as carbon neutral.

“As an organisation we recognise that climate change is an important global challenge, with aviation contributing around 2% of international carbon emissions each year.  This achievement demonstrates the lengths we go to ensuring we balance our role as economic generator, alongside caring for the environment, whilst working with our third parties to reduce the wider impact of our industry.”

ACI Europe’s Olivier Jankovec said: “Congratulations to all the team at Manchester Airport on this achievement. Becoming carbon neutral is no small feat and today actually serves as a timely reminder of how much work Manchester Airport has put into achieving this goal. They were one of the airports that participated in the pilot phase of the programme and they have worked their way up through the 4 levels of the programme over the intervening years – we actually launched Airport Carbon Accreditation here in Manchester at our Annual Congress in 2009. So, it really is a red-letter day for Manchester Airport, for the programme and for air transport in the UK.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation was developed by ACI Europe and has since been rolled out to other global ACI Global Regions.  It is specific to airports, and at the levels 3 and 3+ in addition to requiring a reduction in the airport’s own emissions, also requires that airports monitor emissions from third party operations (including aircraft on the ground), and to work with business partners to reduce their emissions too. It is supported by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), with airports at Level 3+ (neutrality) entitled to use the UN’s ‘Climate Neutral Now’ logo.

Manchester Airport has invested around £1.2m to improve facilities for passengers arriving back into UK through Terminal 3.

The highlight of the work is an additional baggage carousel located within the international arrivals hall.

The work was carried out over a 12-month period by teams from Manchester Airport, Lostock Installations Limited and Vanderlande Industries.  To allow for the new baggage carousel a significant number of changes had to be made to the layout of the terminal building.

Matt Etchells, head of Terminal 3 at Manchester Airport, said: “The task of installing the baggage carousel was a significant challenge due to the limited space within the terminal.  The project team at the airport and contractors brought into deliver it, performed brilliantly to get the carousel operational in time.

“The new carousel will allow the terminal to handle more international passengers at any one time and makes it a nicer, more open space for passengers using the area.”

Manchester Airport has seen the number of flights operating from Terminal 3 increase by 34% over the last three years. Both Ryanair and Flybe have increased the number of flights they operate from the terminal and new airlines such as Vueling Airlines and Iberia Express have also started operating.

Singapore Airlines has launched its second direct route to the UK and its first trans-Atlantic flight between the UK and US.

The new Singapore-Manchester-Houston service marks a switch from the previous route that operated between the Asian and US cities via Moscow. Flights commenced on 30 October 2016 and will now operate five times a week. The airline previously flew to Manchester via Munich, and this service has also now been terminated. However, SIA will continue to operate direct flights to both Moscow and Munich.

The new flight will now depart Singapore at 0235 and arrive in Manchester at 0900. It will then take off from the UK city at 1015 and arrive in Houston at 1535. The return flight will depart Houston at 2015 and arrive in Manchester at 1005, before leaving again at 1135 and finally reaching Singapore at 0820.

“Our new non-stop routes to Houston and Singapore from Manchester are the first outside of London to offer travellers more convenient travel to Texas,” stated SIA’s vice president for Europe, Subhas Menon. “With our partnership with Flybe, these routes are also open to travellers from 11 cities across the UK including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.”

Ken O’Toole, CEO of Manchester Airport, said the new routes would alleviate some of the “uncertainty following the Brexit vote”.

“This new east and west route connecting America to Manchester and on to Asia, clearly highlights the role we play with connecting the north to international markets, unlocking trade, tourist and economic opportunities,” he commented.

The launch comes just a week after SIA kicked off a new direct flight from Singapore to San Francisco. It now operates to four US destinations: San Francisco (direct and via Hong Kong) Los Angeles (via Seoul and Tokyo), New York (via Frankfurt) and Houston (via Manchester).

Singapore Airlines has kicked off its two new non-stop routes from Manchester with various celebrations at Manchester Airport along with a formal event held this morning at the Radisson Blu, Manchester Airport hotel, attended by Aviation Minister, Lord Ahmad.

The inaugural flight to Houston departed on Sunday 30 October, with Singapore Airlines celebrating by putting on a real American display with dancing cheerleaders performing at the check-in desk, along with an American themed breakfast for passengers, cake cutting and ribbon cutting ceremony at the gate.

Alongside the Minister, this morning’s formal event was attended by Singapore Airlines customers, regional businesses and dignitaries overlooking the inaugural flight, as it pushed back for its first non-stop flight to Singapore.

There were also speeches from the Minister, Singapore Airlines regional vice president for Europe Subhas Menon and Ken O’Toole, CEO of Manchester Airport. Also present was Chia Wei Wen, Deputy High Commissioner from the Singapore High Commission, and Julie Greenhill, from Texas Tourism.

The non-stop routes from Manchester will be operated five times weekly. Both routes make Manchester the only airport outside of London to offer these destinations and underpin the airport’s role within the Northern Powerhouse.

Speaking about the launch Singapore Airlines VP for Europe Subhas Menon said: “Our new non-stop routes to Houston and Singapore from Manchester are the first outside of London to offer travellers more convenient travel to Texas. We are committed to this region and want to continue to develop Singapore Airlines relationship with the people and businesses of the North West. With our partnership with Flybe, these routes are also open to travellers from 11 cities across the UK including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness”.

Lord Ahmad, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport (Minister for Aviation): “It is a pleasure to be in Manchester to mark the inaugural flight between Singapore, Manchester and Houston, Texas. Every year nearly 100,000 people fly from the North West to Texas or Singapore – for holiday or for business. Now they can fly directly. Leading academic institutions such as the University of Manchester have also added their welcome and highlighted how this will help strengthen research partnerships in Texas whilst businesses across the North West will now have direct access to the economic engine that is Singapore.

“Manchester Airport’s offering of new long-haul routes, coupled with its £1 billion investment, will connect the Northern Powerhouse to even more long haul destinations and is another step in building an outward facing, global Britain.”

Due to the success of Manchester Airport’s new direct flight to Beijing with Hainan Airlines, Weibo and WeChat, the Chinese equivalents of Twitter and Whatsapp, have been developed by the airport to better communicate with the masses of passengers from China.

Hainan Airlines
Hainan Airlines

Since the launch of the flight in June, almost 40,000 passengers have travelled between Manchester and Beijing. Many of these turn to Weibo and WeChat to communicate with friends and relatives, and to interact with brands, so the airport has worked with Chinese digital agency, Red Lantern, to create and develop its presence on the channels.

The airport not only plans to communicate with current passengers in Mandarin who use the route, but also with the huge Chinese population across its catchment area that spans as far north as Scotland, south to the West Midlands and across to North Wales, Merseyside and Yorkshire. This is made up of Chinese students who use the North’s Global Gateway to access universities and also the rich population of people of Chinese heritage. Manchester has the third biggest China town in Europe.

Patrick Alexander, head of Marketing at Manchester Airport said: “What better way to speak to a core demographic and our new passenger base than adopting the channels they know and love.

“Not only can we provide them with relevant airport and airline information, but by using their channels, in their native Mandarin, we can give added value and a better, more targeted, customer service.

“The channels will provide a wealth of content and as we grow and develop our route network to China, in turn the social media channels will also grow.”

Emirates has revealed the ongoing demand for its Manchester to Dubai route, reporting a 9.5% annual growth on 2015. 610,000 passengers have flown between the two cities this year, and Emirates is all set to hit the record milestone of 1,000,000 during the 2016 financial year (1st April 2016 – 31st March 2017).

Emirates’ presence at Manchester has grown significantly since its first full year of operation in 1991, during which it carried just 17,000 passengers from the region. It has since carried over nine million people to the UAE and beyond, with popular destinations including Bangkok, Perth, Singapore and Mumbai.

The airline recently announced that a third daily A380 service will be added to the route from 1st January 2017, replacing the existing Boeing 777-300ER, and adding a further 11% capacity.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates vice president, UK, said: “Manchester was the second route launched in the UK and it remains just as important to our operations today as it was 25 years ago. Since 1990, Manchester has grown from a small regional airport to a vital gateway for the North of the country, and the demand we’re seeing for both travel and exports to Dubai and beyond has never been stronger.

“To hit the symbolic milestone of one million passengers will be hugely significant for us, and will only strengthen our commitment and contribution to the region. We are the only airline to employ the iconic A380 outside of London, and the launch of the third daily service will allow us to offer even more of our Manchester passengers the exceptional level of service they have come to expect from us.”

The low-cost carrier claims the capacity increase will deliver 4.5m customers p.a. and support 3,400 jobs at Manchester Airport, with Ryanair growing its Manchester traffic by 13% in 2017.

Ryanair’s Manchester summer schedule will see more frequencies to sun destinations for summer family holidays, lower fares as Ryanair passes on lower fuel costs, and a better customer experience, it claims.

Ryanair will continue to connect Manchester with major leisure and business centres on high frequency, low fare services including Dublin (5 daily), Madrid (daily) and Rome (10 weekly).

In Manchester, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said:“We are pleased to launch our biggest ever Manchester summer 2017 schedule, which includes 5 new summer services to Berlin, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Oslo and Wroclaw, as well as extra flights to Alicante, Chania, Faro, Krakow, Lanzarote, Murcia, Palma, Rome, Tenerife and Zadar, which will deliver 4.5m million customers p.a. and support 3,400 jobs at Manchester Airport.

“Customers can look forward to even lower fares when they make advance bookings for summer 2017. Travellers in the north of England will be offered new low-cost flights to the Canary Islands this winter.

Norwegian has unveiled plans to launch two new winter sun routes from Manchester Airport, with services to Gran Canaria commencing on 30 October and flights to Tenerife starting on 1 November.

“This winter is set to get warmer for Manchester as we continue creating even more affordable choices for passengers to Europe’s hottest destinations. We’ve already flown 80,000 passengers to and from Manchester this year and our growth will continue into next year thanks to the popularity of our flights,” said Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s chief commercial officer.

Flights to Gran Canaria will operate every Friday and Sunday for the winter season, while the Tenerife route will run every Tuesday and Saturday all-year-round. Norwegian will serve both routes using its 186-seat, all-economy Boeing 737 aircraft which comes equipped with free in-flight Wi-Fi and live TV.

Norwegian will also fly from Manchester to the mainland Spanish cities of Malaga and Alicante this winter.

Emirates has announced an 11% capacity increase to Manchester with the deployment of a third daily A380 on the route.

As of 1st January, the replacement of the Boeing 777-300ER will mean that all Emirates flights to Manchester will be operated by the iconic double decker aircraft. The airline also unveiled plans to swap its current A380 service at Birmingham from the morning to the afternoon departure slot, in order to offer customers even more connections beyond Dubai to other Emirates A380 destinations – ensuring a seamless “A380 to A380” experience.

Thanks to the new aircraft deployment, Emirates will offer 2,198 additional weekly seats on the route, enabling further business and leisure travel between Dubai and Manchester. The airline also expects to break the symbolic mark of one million passengers carried on the route for this financial year, attesting to the growing demand in the market. With a total of 517 seats in a three-class cabin configuration, the aircraft features 14 private suites in First Class, 76 flat-bed seats in Business Class and 427 spacious seats in Economy Class.

Manchester has been an important destination for Emirates over the last 25 years and the second route launched into the UK after London Gatwick. Emirates is working closely with Manchester airport on the transformation project and looking forward to the new gate for the A380 in the new facility.

With 21 weekly flights, Emirates enables convenient and seamless connections to popular destinations worldwide. Flight EK21 will depart from Dubai at 0300hrs and arrive in Manchester at 0700hrs. The return flight EK22 will depart from Manchester at 0845, with a 1945hrs arrival time in Dubai.

Emirates is also adjusting its A380 schedule to Birmingham in order to enable even more convenient A380 to A380 connections via its hub in Dubai. As of 1st January, the A380 will operate flights EK37/38 instead of flights EK39/40 as it currently does. Leaving Birmingham at 2045hrs, EK38 arrives in Dubai at 0740hrs; while EK37 departs from Dubai at 1450hrs to arrive in Birmingham at 1845hrs. The A380 service to Birmingham will continue to operate with a two-class configuration aircraft, offering 615 seats in total.

Passengers travelling to other destinations across the UK can also take advantage of Emirates’ codeshare agreement with Flybe.

The airport has spent £1.9m on the lounge which has increased in capacity by a third with room for up to 212 passengers.

The new-look Escape Lounge will provide passengers with an area away from the hustle and bustle of the airport terminal before they fly. A new kitchen and bar have also been added to the main lounge, which has been created by knocking two lounges into one.

Kevin Smith, head of Retail, said: “We’re delighted with how well the refurbishment has gone.  Now even more passengers can start their holidays in style by taking advantage of our fantastic facilities.”

Originally launched in Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 in 2006, MAG has successfully grown its Escape Lounge brand – adding a second in Terminal 1 in 2010 and in Terminal 3 in 2013, as well as launching at East Midlands Airport and London Stansted in 2014.

MAG has also taken the Escape Lounge concept across the Atlantic to the USA.  It has recently opened its first lounge at Minneapolis-St Paul Airport and summer will see one opened at Oakland International Airport, with a further lounge set to open this winter at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut.

June saw 2,520,036 passengers fly through the gateway, which is a 9.22% increase on the same month last year.

That brings the moving annual total for Manchester Airport to 24,095,206.

The growth seen in June has been attributed in part to Hainan Airlines’ four flights a week to Beijing, which launched on 10th June. The inaugural flights were 90% full and load factors for the summer are currently at more than 80%.

Beijing is one of several new long haul routes launched from Manchester Airport this year. These include Los Angeles and Boston, both of which are proving popular with customers looking to access North America.

Ken O’Toole, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “It’s been another strong month of growth for Manchester Airport as we edge further into the busy summer season.

“We were incredibly proud to welcome and witness the inaugural flight to Beijing, which makes Manchester the only UK airport outside of London with a direct, scheduled service to mainland China.

“I am sure all of our new services are popular with the 22m people who live within our catchment area, with them also providing a vital economic boost to the region. As the year progresses we look forward to securing more direct routes for passengers across the North.”

As the peak season gets into full swing, the airport saw a 10% increase in aircraft movements, with more than 18,000 planes coming and going from the two full length runways. The amount of freight also increased by 11% with 10,228 tonnes handled in June.

Thomson Airways’ tenth Dreamliner touched down at Manchester Airport at 09:10am this morning.

The airline’s managing director, John Murphy, landed the aircraft after flying 3950 miles across the Atlantic from the Boeing Factory in Charleston, South Carolina.

Its arrival is extra special for the airline, as it is the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to enter the Thomson fleet. The 787-9 is six metres longer than the 787-8 Dreamliners and includes 45 more seats, so will carry a total of 345 customers to far flung destinations from Jamaica and Dominican Republic to Mexico.

In preparation for Thomson’s rebrand to TUI in the Autumn 2017, the aircraft arrived in the new TUI livery.

John Murphy said: “We are delighted to welcome the first 787-9 Dreamliner into our fleet. Since we took delivery of our first Dreamliner in May 2013, the aircraft has been a big hit with our customers and we’ve received excellent feedback.  We are committed to investing in our fleet to innovate our customers flying experience.  Our new bigger Dreamliner will allow even more customers to enjoy the revolutionary benefits this aircraft offers, when traveling to their holiday destination.

“This aircraft is key to expanding our long haul programme.  We are always looking at new and exciting destinations to offer customers even more holiday choice.  For this winter we have introduced holidays to Sri Lanka and next summer St Lucia will also be added to our holiday line-up.”

The airline will be taking delivery of up to four 787-9 Dreamliners before June 2019, so there will be nine Boeing 787-8 and five Boeing 787-9 in the fleet.

Thomson is planning to operate the aircraft on short haul routes, before the 787-9 begins flying its long haul routes.  The new aircraft is scheduled to operate its first customer flight from Manchester to Malaga, Spain on 1 July, before it commences its regular Manchester to Montego Bay, Jamaica route on 15 July.

The figures were revealed by Christian Schindler, Lufthansa Group regional director for the UK & Ireland, when he visited Manchester to join in the diamond anniversary celebrations.

“This continued growth confirms the hub airlines in the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and Brussels Airlines) continue to be among the leading carriers at Manchester,” said Schindler. “We are on target to hit the one million passengers a year mark at Manchester for 2016.

“The inaugural service started from Hamburg and then called at Düsseldorf on its way to Manchester. On leaving Manchester the Lockheed L-1049 G Super Constellation aircraft then crossed the Atlantic to Montreal and finally continued on to Chicago. Bert Trautmann, Manchester City’s German goalkeeper at the time, cut the ribbon just days before his heroic performance in the FA cup final where he played the later part of the match with a broken neck.”

The top five popular international routes last month were:

  • Dubai
  • Dublin
  • Amsterdam
  • Tenerife
  • Alicante

Aircraft movements in and out of Manchester were also up last month by 883, with 13,736 planes taking off and landing on the airport’s two full length runways.

There are more than 22m people in the airport’s catchment area, which spans as far north as Scotland, as south as the West Midlands, east across Yorkshire and west to Merseyside and North Wales.

Ken O’Toole, managing director at Manchester Airport, said: “The continued strong growth at Manchester Airport is incredibly positive and benefits not only the airport and our passengers, but the entire region.

“As new routes come to fruition and passenger numbers increase, in turn jobs are created and inbound tourism spend is injected into the region.

“Manchester Airport currently generates £1.7bn in value for the North West, supports 21,500 jobs on site and a further 45,000 indirectly and we are confident of driving more growth in the years to come.

“This financial year, we will see services to Beijing, with Hainan Airlines plus Los Angeles and Boston, with Thomas Cook, begin. Plus next financial year San Francisco and Boston, with Virgin Atlantic, will launch.

“Such services are sure to prove popular with leisure travellers, as well as delivering a boost to businesses wanting access to these key markets and, as the year progresses, we look forward to securing yet more vital routes for passengers across the North.”

Since the route was launched on 27 March 2006, Etihad Airways has operated more than 10,000 flights between Manchester and Abu Dhabi. Due to its popularity in the North of England, the frequency increased to twice daily in August 2011.  Over two million passengers have flown between Manchester and Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways in the past decade.

James Harrison, UK GM for Etihad Airways, said: “Etihad Airways is delighted to be marking a highly successful decade operating out of Manchester. We’ve seen passenger numbers continually rise every year since we started operations, and Manchester is a key destination on our global network. It has an important role in our UK operation and has been a consistent success, regularly appearing in our top 10 most popular destinations.

“In addition to the aircraft, we have made a huge investment in our brand through the sponsorship of Manchester City FC. Our European call centre is also based at Manchester Airport and houses more than 200 staff.

“We operate two flights a day to Abu Dhabi connecting our guests to more than 100 destinations via our main hub in Abu Dhabi. At Terminal 1, there is an elegant premium lounge and we offer limousine services for our premium-class passengers.”

Virgin Atlantic will launch two new routes to the US from Manchester Airport, and a new codeshare agreement with regional airline Flybe.

The new routes consist of Manchester Airport’s first ever direct flights to San Francisco, and a new service to Boston.

In an additional boost for UK holidaymakers Virgin Atlantic has also confirmed a new codeshare deal with Flybe. From 2 April customers will be able to book tickets on Virgin Atlantic’s website to travel from one of 18 UK or European airports, and connect onto a Virgin Atlantic flight at Manchester, Glasgow or London Gatwick airport.

The partnership will offer numerous benefits for customers, allowing seamless connections between Flybe and Virgin Atlantic and enabling customers to check themselves and their luggage through to their final destination.

Erik Varwijk, EVP of Commercial at Virgin Atlantic commented: “We’re delighted to be able to offer our customers these two new direct flights to the USA from Manchester Airport. In addition to our current services to Atlanta, Las Vegas, Orlando and Barbados, the new routes to San Francisco and Boston really open up America for our customers. This year marks twenty years of our first ever flight from Manchester and we’ll continue to look for opportunities to offer our unique experience on routes where our customers are looking to fly.”

“Our partnership with Flybe offers us a fantastic opportunity to reach customers looking to travel long haul from key cities throughout the UK and Europe. We look forward to offering easy connections to some of our most popular destinations including the tropical islands of Barbados and St Lucia and the US cities of Orlando and Las Vegas.”

Visit California welcomed news of Virgin Atlantic’s new service from Manchester to San Francisco.

“Airlift to California is growing rapidly and the announcement of Virgin’s new route this week brings a total of six new airline routes from UK and Ireland to California since 2015,” said Joanna Cooke, trade marketing director for Visit California.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to work with our trade partners to support the new route and raise awareness of Northern California’s diverse range of itinerary options, activities and attractions.”

Air China is planning to expand its long-haul operations from Shanghai with the launch of two new routes to Europe.

The company has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to launch flights from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport to Manchester and Barcelona.

If approved, the Manchester route will commence in March 2016, with the Barcelona service following in May. Air China plans to serve both cities four times a week using its Airbus A330 aircraft.

Air China currently connects Shanghai with four European cities: Paris, Frankfurt, Munich and Milan, but no airline currently serves the Shanghai-Manchester or Shanghai-Barcelona routes.

In addition, Air China has submitted an application to launch flights from Chongqing to Dubai. The airline intends to operate this route three times a week from 28 March 2016, using an A330. This will also be a brand new city pair.

In the last 25 years, the airline revealed it has carried more than eight million passengers between Dubai and Manchester, with 3.6 million travelling in the last five years.

Almost 800,000 people have travelled with Emirates through Manchester Airport in the last year alone, which is equal to nearly a third of the Greater Manchester population.

Emirates launched its route to Manchester Airport on 2 November 1990 as a twice-weekly service to Dubai. As passenger numbers have risen, Emirates has added more aircraft to the route and today offers three daily flights between Dubai and Manchester, two of which are operated by the A380 and the third by a Boeing 777. Emirates is the only carrier to fly an A380 from Manchester, having first introduced the superjumbo to the airport in 2010.

Emirates’ wider contribution to the North West economy has grown alongside its expansion at Manchester Airport. It now employs 30 permanent staff at the airport, while its European customer contact centre, which is based in Manchester, employs more than 350 people. Over six million meals have been made locally in Manchester to serve Emirates passengers travelling to Dubai and 70 crew members stay in Manchester every night between flights at local hotels. The airline also invested £1.5 million in the Emirates Lounge, which opened at Manchester Airport in October 2009.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates vice president, UK, said: “In 25 years of operating at Manchester Emirates has experienced unprecedented levels of growth. When we first launched, we employed just six members of staff working across the sales and check in teams. Now, we employ almost 400 people in Manchester and carry almost 9,000 passengers from Manchester to Dubai each week. Our success in the region is a testament to the growth of both Manchester and Dubai as popular global business and leisure destinations.

“At Emirates, we are committed to increasing our contribution to Manchester and the wider North West region. Emirates is the only airline to use the A380 outside of London, which brings its own set of economic benefits, allowing us to transport even more passengers to and from the region. As we move in to 2016, we look forward to what we hope will be another successful 25 years in the North West.”

Christian Schindler, Lufthansa Group regional director for the UK, Ireland & Iceland (front left), Stephen Turner, commercial director for Manchester Airport (front right), crew and VIP guests were greeted with a viennese waltz to mark the launch of Austrian Airlines’ new daily service between Manchester and Vienna.

The service to the Austrian capital is being operated using Fokker 70 and 100 aircraft.

Welcoming the first passengers at Manchester Airport Christian Schindler, the Lufthansa Group regional director for the UK, Ireland & Iceland said: “This service has been added to our schedule to meet the demand of our passengers. Over the last few years Vienna became the number one onward connection destination for Lufthansa passengers departing from Manchester so it was logical for us to offer direct flights. This not only reduces the travelling time for the passengers but will also increase the number of seats available for other passengers wanting to access the Lufthansa network through or hubs at Frankfurt and Munich.

“It means that for the first time ever all carriers of the Lufthansa Airline Group are available at Manchester. In addition to providing a point-to-point service to one of Europe’s most frequently visited cities, the new flight also increases the connection options for customers in the North of England. The minimum onward connection time through Vienna is just 25 minutes. So with the choice of Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Brussels they have now have total access to the 321 destinations in 103 countries in our worldwide network.”

Fares for the new service will come under the Lufthansa Group’s new price concept for flights in Europe offering Economy Class fare options “Light”, “Classic” and “Flex”. Austrian Airlines Economy return fares for the new service start at £160 (Light), £175 (Classic) and £215 (Flex) with return Business fares from £550. These fares include all taxes and charges.

The new Manchester service will compliment Austrian Airlines existing UK offering of 28 weekly flights to London Heathrow.

He had clocked almost almost 13 hours of work, more than the 11 maximum permitted by European Union regulation.

However, due to a pressurisation fault, the rested crew couldn’t continue and Air France had to send three smaller planes to pick up the stranded passengers.

Air France said it was contacting each of its customers to offer compensation.

“Given a need to respect European regulations concerning maximum hours for flying personnel, the crew had to make a stop at Manchester,” the airline said in a statement. “The airline understands well the exasperation of its customers in this situation.”
