China’s domestic tourism revenues in the first half of 2022 fell 28.2 per cent from a year earlier, official data showed, as COVID lockdowns hit the services sector, which accounts for about 60 per cent of China’s economy and half of urban jobs.

Chinese tourists made a total of 1.46 billion domestic trips in the January-June period, 22.2 per cent lower than the previous year, according to Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In the second quarter, tourist trips fell by a larger 26.2 per cent as the lockdown of the commercial hub of Shanghai and curbs in neighbouring cities restricted people’s mobility.

Affected by COVID, people are increasingly preferring fragmented travel time, shorter travel distance and lower travel budget,” said Ma Yiliang, statistician at China Tourism Academy, adding that the market for long-distance travel has dropped significantly. While many COVID curbs have been relaxed since, and activity bounced back in June, analysts do not expect a rapid economic recovery for the world’s second largest economy this year as Beijing sticks to its zero-COVID policy.

In particular, the imposition of new lockdowns in some cities and detection of a highly-contagious variant of the virus have made businesses and consumers more uncertain. China’s gross domestic product grew by a meagre 0.4 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier, official data showed.

Chinese tourists made around 230 million trips over the extended May Day holiday as domestic travel surpassed pre-coronavirus pandemic levels, according to official estimates, although total tourism revenues were still lower.

China marked International Labour Day with a five-day holiday from May 1-5, giving workers a long-awaited opportunity to travel to other parts of the country after they were urged to skip their annual trip home for Lunar New Year in mid-February to stave off the risk of a COVID-19 resurgence.

The 230 million trips figure – an estimate from the data centre of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism – was up 119.7% from the same period of 2020, when travel was more restricted, and 3.2% higher than pre-pandemic levels, as people flocked to popular destinations from tropical Hainan to scenic Tibet. Domestic tourism revenues, while up 138.1% year-on-year, were only 77% of pre-virus levels at CNY 113.23 billion (USD 17.5 billion), the ministry added.

Online travel giant Trip.com Group, which had expected up to 200 million trips to be made over the period, said its own orders – which include travel, room reservations and tour bookings – for May 1-5 were up around 270% year-on-year and up 30% from 2019 levels.

Turkey, in its endeavour to provide further momentum to its safe tourism programme started full-fledged vaccination of tourism employees in coordination with Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Health and Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA).

The vaccination programme covers the employees of the airlines, airports, accommodation facilities, travel agencies as well as the professional guides. Vaccination of the entire tourism staff will be completed before the beginning of 2021 summer season.

Within the scope of ‘Safe Tourism Certification Program’, vaccination programme aims to welcome international travellers for the upcoming summer season and ensure the health and safety of tourism employees and its residents. Since the launch of ‘Safe Tourism Certification Program’ in June 2020, Turkey has been following stringent health and safety guidelines and taking all necessary steps to ensure it continues to be safe.

Before the opening of the season, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism started to work on inclusion of the tourism sector employees into the vaccination programme to ensure that the tourism services in the country remain open throughout the year. The vaccination programme is carried out meticulously in coordination with the Ministry of Health. The vaccination process for tourism employees started in line with priorities and within the scope of the ‘Safe Tourism Certification Program’.

As part of continuing efforts to fight against COVID-19 and further enhance position as one of the world’s safest destinations, Turkey is continuing to invest in ‘Safe Tourism Certification Program’ which is one of the first and most successful examples in the world in this field. The country has expanded the scope of the practice and made it compulsory for accommodation facilities with 30 or more rooms. Up to now more than 8,000 facilities were certified.

As the country is expecting a V-shaped recovery in touristic travels, tourism workforce is prioritized for vaccination. Turkey is taking all necessary steps to make sure it remains to be a healthy and safe tourism destination in 2021 and will be one of the top choices as a safe travel option for international travellers.

Last week’s announcement that Turkey is one of the 73 countries which will allow British tourists to visit and not require them to quarantine upon their return to the UK, came as welcome news to Turkey and many holiday makers.

However, as further reassurance of Turkey’s commitment to the health and safety of their citizens and guests, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has released both a video and information pack showing the strict health and safety measures which have been implemented as well as procedures should someone arrive in Turkey with COVID-19 or contract the virus whilst there.

The advert from the point of view of a little boy travelling to Turkey with his parents, features the ‘Safe Tourism Certification’ logo, announced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism last month which validates the execution of high-level health and hygiene requirements at participating airports, airlines (and other transport hubs), accommodation outlets and food and beverage facilities.

Facilities with a ‘Safe Tourism Certification’ have a QR code on all logos allowing guests and customers to access their inspection data.

“Turkey’s healthcare system and infrastructure proved resilient during the pandemic and incoming foreign tourists should feel safe in the country,” said Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, minister of culture and tourism. “We are delighted to have an ‘airbridge’ with UK. With our strong healthcare infrastructure system, stringent health and safety measures and special insurance packages for tourists, we are ready to welcome British citizens as always.”

The information pack, which accompanies the video, clearly explains safety procedures carried out upon arrival and throughout a guest’s stay in Turkey, which will limit chances of contamination and spread of COVID-19. Upon arrival at the airport and before entering the country, all guests must have their temperature taken. Should a temperature be higher than 37.8 degrees, they will be given a PCR test free of charge. If the result is positive, they will be taken to a nearby hospital immediately.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Turkey has announced a safe tourism certification programme, launched to coincide with the start of the 2020 summer season. Run in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the programme covers a broad range of safety measures.

The certificate validates the execution of high levels of health and hygiene requirements at airline companies, airports (and other transport stations) and accommodation outlets, as well as food and beverage facilities.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, minister of culture and tourism in Turkey said: “Turkey has been a role model for the world during the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to its well-established health system and treatment methods. The launch of our safe tourism certification programme further demonstrates that Turkey will take a pioneering role in terms of directing the normalisation of tourism.” He added: “Our new certification programme ensures that tourists can enjoy holidays in Turkey in a safe and hygienic manner and feel comfortable for the duration of their visit.”

The safe tourism certification programme follows the announcement from the beginning of March that British citizens travelling to Turkey for leisure or business purposes will now be able to travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This summer will be the first season without visa requirements for British tourists.

China will ramp up its policy support for Shanghai, the nation’s first pilot zone for cruise tourism, to attract more international partners and visitors. The eastern city’s cruise port will kick off China’s first duty-free store that is open for people entering the country.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism gave the green light to the city to deepen collaboration with foreign firms to expand the tourism sector in the region. The 1,700-square metre tax-free store will be opened during the second China International Import Expo in November.

Global cruise companies such as US Carnival, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Swiss Mediterranean Shipping and Malaysia’s Genting Group already operate cruises that depart from Shanghai. The turnover of tax-free shops at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal reached about CNY120 million (USD17.1 million) each year in the past two years.
