The number of APAC properties run by AccorHotels reached one thousand when the group announced the opening of Pullman Tokyo Tamachi in Japan today — putting the company on track for its target of opening one hotel every single day by 2020.

The milestone represented by Pullman Tokyo Tamachi’s (above) launch means that for Accor, who have been on scarfing up acquisitions and opening new locations at a remarkable rate for some time now, the APAC region now represents more than 30% of rooms and 51% of the company’s pipeline across the planet.

“A new hotel every second day by 2020 [in APAC] and one hotel per day globally.”

Accor’s current growth is clocked at two openings in APAC a week but that just the start with the company striving to drastically up the rate of global openings, as Michael Issenberg, CEO for APAC at AccorHotels, said: “For the first half of 2018, 72% of global room openings for the group were in the Asia Pacific. We currently open, on average, a new hotel in the Asia Pacific every three days, but our goal is to move this to a new hotel every second day by 2020 [in APAC] and one hotel per day globally.”

“Enormous potential of the Asia Pacific tourism market”

The Accor portfolio now includes respected brands such as Raffles, Orient Express, Fairmont, Banyan Tree, Delano, Mondrian, SLS, Swissôtel, and Mövenpick, with no sign of stopping the company plans to open and add more brands, following the most recent purchase – the USD 1.2 billion acquisition of Mantra Group in Australia – with an estate of 138 hotels in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Bali.

Issenberg went on to add that Accor Asia Pacific will continue its rapid expansion as the group looks to transform its business model to become a full-service operator in travel, lifestyle and digital innovation. “We are very excited about what the future holds and our world-class distribution platform and loyalty program will help ensure we fully realise the enormous potential of the Asia Pacific tourism market.”

Tunisia - Movenpick

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement to manage an existing property in the Mediterranean coastal city of Sfax, relaunching it under the brand later this year.

After the opening of Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis earlier this year, as well as Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse and Mövenpick Hotel Gammarth Tunis, the Swiss hospitality firm looks to further cement its stronghold in Tunisia.

The hotel will launch as Mövenpick Hotel Sfax later this year and will mark the firm’s fourth property in Tunisia. The brand currently operates three destinations in two cities of Tunisia.

“This upcoming addition to our Tunisia portfolio will expand our regional footprint, solidifying our presence in a new destination with high growth potential,” explained Andrew Langdon, chief development officer at Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement with Société Touristique du Sud to manage the Plaza Sfax & Spa Hotel. It’s an upscale property in a city centre location, close to the historic Medina, a short walk from the town’s convention centre, and about six miles from Sfax-Thyna Airport.

“A unique opportunity for a hospitality specialist”

“This attractive property occupies a prime area of real estate in the heart of Sfax and presents a unique opportunity for a hospitality specialist with regional and international expertise to create a business and leisure destination with a difference,” said Mourad Jallali, president & CEO at Société Touristique du Sud.

“With its strong track record managing a portfolio of properties in North Africa region, we are confident Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will make a huge success of this landmark project.”

Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa Sousse

The 89-room hotel features contemporary architecture and a modern interior design with a concept inspired by nature. It consists of nine floors in total and will provide a number of open spaces.

Facility highlights include an expansive spa centre, swimming pool and gym, as well as a ballroom and six meeting rooms for events. In addition, there will be three dining options – an all-day dining venue, a speciality rooftop restaurant with city and coastal views and a lobby lounge.

“Sfax is not only a historic city… but an up-and-coming business and trading centre”

Langdon concluded: “Sfax is not only a historic city with Mediterranean charm but an up-and-coming business and trading centre where upscale hotel supply is relatively limited and corporate demand is strong. Operating a property in a central location and with a raft of high-quality facilities will enable us to capitalise on these favourable market conditions.”

Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis has opened its doors on the banks of Lake Tunis, creating a business and leisure destination in the Tunisian capital.

The five-star property is another milestone for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, supporting its North African expansion strategy. It features 189 contemporary rooms and suites including fine dining, spa and MICE facilities, and unhindered city or lake views.

Aside from being set in a natural lagoon, Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis is conveniently located in the city’s thriving Berges du Lac business and diplomatic district, 10 minutes from Tunis-Carthage airport and downtown Tunis, 15 minutes from the towns of Carthage, La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said, and within easy reach of cultural sites, shopping outlets and golf courses.

According to Marc Descrozaille, president, Middle East and Africa, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts: “With an enviable lakeside location, outstanding facilities and major attractions on its doorstep, I am confident Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis will quickly establish a reputation as one of the city’s most sought-after properties, popular with business, leisure and wedding guests.”

“Mövenpick’s signature hospitality style… will make its mark in Tunis”

“Mövenpick’s signature hospitality style, which is centred on our ‘we make moments’ philosophy, will also make its mark in Tunis, ensuring our guests experience a warm and personal service and an unforgettable stay in this exciting Mediterranean city,” Descrozaille added.

There are distinctive dining venues in Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis. Le Grand Restaurant, which offers all-day dining, international buffet, and street food-inspired coffee breaks for meeting delegates; La Table du Chef, an exclusive kitchen-Atelier experience where dishes are tailormade; Al Diwan, which serves signature bites, inventive cocktails and shisha at the lobby lounge; and a fourth venue called La Terrasse, provides outdoor seating for all three restaurants, offering an al fresco dining option by the lake.

For MICE events, the hotel has three meeting rooms, a large ballroom, and an outdoor venue for hosting lakeside occasions. Le Grand salon ballroom can host up to 700 guests while the terrace is suitable for open-air ceremonies.

A wellness hub is also available for guests. S Per Aqua is a spa and fitness facility featuring eight treatment rooms, two flash-UV cabins, a hammam, sauna, experience showers and hydro baths, plus a heated indoor pool with terrace, fitness centre, beauty salon and boutiques selling gourmet food, spa products and handicrafts.

As Kenya’s tourism sector grows year-over-year, generating 10% of the country’s GDP, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts pursues development opportunities with the opening of Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi.

Located in Westlands – a commercial, retail and entertainment hub close to the city centre of Nairobi, the capital of and largest city in Kenya – the five-star property offers 276 rooms, suites, and residences with new dining, leisure and events concepts to the Kenyan capital.  It stands as the perfect base to explore Kenya’s capital while staying for business or pleasure.

Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi represents an authentic African design to reflect its surroundings, and the brand’s ambitious plan to expand in the Sub-Saharan region.

“This is an exciting and timely moment to enter Kenya’s hospitality market, with the tourism sector becoming increasingly important to the country’s economy, generating 10% of GDP – the same as banking – and predicted to grow by 6% annually over the next decade,” said Marc Descrozaille, president of Middle East & Africa, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“The tourism sector [is] predicted to grow by 6% annually over the next decade”

The one and two-bedroom residences in the hotel range in size from 97-square-metres to 121-square-metres. Each room offers a separate living area, a fully-equipped kitchen, and features African-inspired artwork and interiors.

“Our debut in Nairobi also acts as a springboard to grow our footprint across East Africa as we pursue development opportunities in the region,” added Descrozaille.

Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi offers five distinctive dining experiences:

The Latino-themed La Mesa bar and lounge serves tapas while screening live sporting events; the Baluba all-day dining showcases themed buffets and local produce; The View is a revolving restaurant which is the best place to take in 360 degree views of Nairobi City and sample traditional Swiss specialties; Kijani bar, next to the outdoor pool offers inventive cocktails and light snacks; and the lobby café, presents Mövenpick’s signature coffees, teas, and handcrafted cakes.

“The arrival of Mövenpick in the city will cater to strong demand from the local business community and corporate and leisure travellers”

“Nairobi is one of East Africa’s fastest-growing hubs for tourism and trade and the arrival of Mövenpick in the city will cater to strong demand from the local business community and corporate and leisure travellers flocking to the capital. Not only do we promise them outstanding facilities, but a warm and friendly service and an unforgettable stay that’s uniquely ‘Mövenpick’,” said Andreas Flückiger, general manager of Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi.

For events, from business meetings, conferences and exhibitions, to product launches, banquets, weddings and other social functions, the hotel offers 14 state-of-the-art venues with natural daylight and high ceilings. In addition, the outdoor pool area is an ideal venue for gala dinners, themed nights, parties and more.

Other notable facilities include the 710-square-metre Almasi ballroom and the pillar-less Hall of Africa with space to host up to 1,100 guests.

With the news that Mövenpick will open 11 hotels and resorts across nine countries during 2018 landing last week, I  headed down to the ambitious brand’s Bangkok office to meet Mark Willis, the group’s new president for Asia, to discuss his recent switch from Carlson Rezidor, his take on the new role and how Mövenpick are embracing Millennials.

You’ve had an interesting and storied career within the industry, how did you start out?

I think a lot of people at the higher end of the industry come through from a very operational background. It doesn’t happen in too many industries, but I think it’s a huge plus. I came from the kitchen, stewarding and washing up in a hotel on Lake Windermere. From there, I worked my way up, through the restaurant scene in London, during the 80’s — the whole nouvelle cuisine period — in a number of feisty kitchen environments, with people like Marco Pierre White, Gary Rhodes and Gordon Ramsey.

Then I started to travel internationally and spent time in Asia, Africa and also the Middle East, before returning to the UK. Consequently I moved from the kitchen, into food and beverage ops and then management with Carlson Rezidor — that took me on a totally different journey, I went to Cornwall where I opened six hotels in a year, did my MBA at Oxford [University]  and, eventually, being in charge of the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, for the last six years.

How did you come to make the move to Mövenpick?

I’d been with Carlson Rezidor for twenty years, and so it wasn’t anything to do with the normal reason people move on, definitely not money or prestige etc. It was about the people that I had met and their vision of where the company wanted to go — I seriously buy into that stuff.

If you meet our CEO, Olivier Chavy, he’s a very charismatic guy, and I’m all about the people who are in the people industry. So as soon as I met him and a couple of other key individuals, such as our chairman Jürgen Fischer, I made my decision in a week. Also, I really wanted to experience Asia from a work perspective, and I’ve got three young children and I wanted to expose the family to new culture in a new environment.

How do you perceive your new role?

I’ve got to say, the role per se is somewhat similar to the role I was doing before. It’s about the development of the brand, and making sure we work closely with our business partners and our own GM’s, to make sure they get what they need. This office is a support office, we’re here to help.

For a property GM, technology has changed things dramatically in the last five or ten years. You still need to be the host, somebody who is focused on the hospitality and guest experience, but an understanding of revenue management and ecommerce is becoming critical to business. Not everybody has that understanding, but as a support office, providing that understanding is part of what we’re here for.

The young GM’s that are coming through though, they’re coming with this knowledge instilled already — it’s a changing environment

In 2018, the first three to six months are definitely about visiting the hotels and connecting with our GM’s to get a clear picture of where we would like to go, and then determine how we’re going to get there, in the short term and long term.

Other than that, when I look at the projects we’ve got coming in 2018? It’s a big year.

In what way?

Well, we’ve got 11 openings as a brand globally, with eight in Asia. Including Mövenpick Resort Khao Yai, Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hi (below) and Mövenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru (above) and Mövenpick Resort & Spa Boracay. I was in Hua Hin yesterday, and I have to say it’s a very special hotel. It’s very ‘Bali-esque’; very tropical, with wonderful rooms and lots of greenery and very open feeling.  It’s going to be stunning, absolutely stunning.

Millennials have had a massive impact on society, from your POV how has this changed the industry and career progression?

It’s a different culture now. It’s fast paced and Millennials want things very quickly; they need career goals and clear development structure. They want to know where this work can take me in six months or a years’ time. Whereas, when I started in the industry, years ago, the conversation began with work hard, and then let’s see.

But, it’s not money that’s the key thing. People are much more conscious, at a young age, of the work/life balance, and marrying their lifestyle outside of work to their career.

From a Mövenpick perspective, there’s a really positive approach to recruitment of young people into the organization, with for example, the MBA development programs that the company runs, and the Mövenpick Academy and Talent Development Centre. A message we are communicating, in a very solid way, through social media.

What kind of impact has this had on the way Mövenpick operate?

It’s very interesting. From an executive committee perspective Mövenpick have a group of Millennials, from both within the company and outside the company that sits within the executive committee.

I’ve only just joined and though I had heard about this before,  when I attended the committee for the first time — and probably because I’m old — I assumed,  that’ll just be a group of  youngsters who might chip in for an hour or so. But how wrong I was, they were fully involved through the entire meeting giving their opinions and feedback.

It was very, very interesting to sit and listen to a number of varying views, on topics where, as a seasoned hotelier of 52, I have historical knowledge, versus someone who sees everything from a young customer perspective. It’s a refreshing, enlightening and insightful experience I have to say.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is gearing up for another year of significant portfolio expansion as it forges ahead with plans to open 11 new properties in nine countries by the end of 2018.

The global hospitality firm, which currently operates 83 hotels across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, will make its debut in five new countries – Bangladesh, Iraq, Kenya, Malaysia and the Maldives – while boosting its cluster of hotels in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia and Thailand.

The next 10 months will see Mövenpick raise a flag in several commercially-strategic destinations, from two of Dubai’s most prestigious districts to The Maldives, where the company will make its Indian Ocean foray.

“In 2018, our global expansion drive really steps up a gear, with the 11 new openings planned, putting us firmly on track to meet our target of 125 properties by 2020 and introducing the Mövenpick brand in some very desirable locations,” confirmed Olivier Chavy (below), president & CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

Three of Mövenpick’s upcoming hotels will open over the next few months: the family-focused Mövenpick Asara Resort & Spa Hua Hin – the brand’s seventh property in Thailand; Mövenpick Hotel du Lac Tunis, located on the banks of Lac de Tunis – its third hotel in Tunisia; and Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi in Kenya, marking the company’s debut in East Africa with a five-star hotel and conference property.

The remaining eight properties, which will be launched before the end of the year, will see Mövenpick enter four additional new markets, with the contemporary Mӧvenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru in the Maldives introducing 105 units, including 72 over-water villas to the idyllic island destination; Mövenpick Hotel Basra capitalising on one of Iraq’s oil and gas hubs; Mövenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA (below) conveniently located close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport; and Mövenpick Hotel Sylhet, introducing an enticing mix of business and leisure facilities to this vibrant city in north-east Bangladesh.

In the Middle East, Mövenpick will be opening two hotels in the United Arab Emirates: the stylish Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai and a Mövenpick hotel in Dubai Media City, both introducing new dining, leisure and meetings concepts to two of the city’s most desirable precincts. The firm will also strengthen its presence in Egypt with the addition of Mövenpick Resort El Ein Bay, its second property in the desirable coastal area of El Sokhna.

In Asia, the hospitality firm will bolster its cluster strategy in Thailand with the opening of Mövenpick Resort Khao Yai, which will feature a raft of dining, business and leisure attractions.

With a current pipeline of more than 40 properties, Mövenpick will enter several additional new markets over the next few years including Muscat (Oman) and Ras Al Khaimah (United Arab Emirates) in the Middle East and Abidjan  (Côte d’Ivoire), Addis Ababa  (Ethiopia) and Abuja (Nigeria) in Africa, while consolidating its presence in countries with strong development potential.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will open a new property in Basra early this year as it looks to capitalise on the city’s status as Iraq’s economic capital and a regional oil and gas hub.

The firm has signed a deal to manage the five-star Mövenpick Hotel Basra, a 152-key property that is on track to open in the first quarter of 2018.

Located in the centre of Basra, within the commercial district of Al Baradi’yah and 25km west of Basra International Airport, the new property aims to fill a gap in the market for upscale hotels.

“Basra is one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing economic centres, a major oil producer and is undergoing rapid infrastructure development, so the time is right for Mövenpick to cement its presence in this flourishing city,” commented Olivier Chavy, president & CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“Our upcoming property will cater to pent-up demand from the corporate sector, which contributes around 90% of hotel demand in Basra due to the high volume of oil and gas and shipping companies based in this booming region of Iraq.”

Mövenpick Hotel Basra will feature high-quality rooms and suites, dining venues and facilities that target corporate guests, investors and local companies operating in Basra, which include some of the world’s largest multinational energy firms.

Amenities will include one all-day dining and one specialty restaurant; an executive lounge and a lobby lounge; a meetings and events area featuring a 700-square metre ballroom, multi-functional hall and meeting room; an indoor swimming pool, gym, spa, and beauty salon; and a retail area.

Andrew LangdonMövenpick Hotels & Resorts is accelerating its expansion drive in Vietnam after signing a deal to manage the Mövenpick Resort Lang Co on the country’s tropical central coast.

The 148-key upscale property, scheduled to open in Q4 2018, is the hospitality firm’s sixth pipelined property in Vietnam – a destination earmarked for rapid growth as part of its ambitious Asian development strategy, which kicks off this year with the opening of Mövenpick Resort Cam Ranh Bay and, of course, Mövenpick Resort Lang Co. The company already operates the successful 144-key Mövenpick Hotel Hanoi (below).

“Vietnam is a prime development focus for Mövenpick as we look to secure our presence in strategic locations across Asia,” commented Andrew Langdon, chief development officer at Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“Our upcoming property in Lang Co will fill a gap in the market for upscale properties on the country’s attractive central coast, home to stunning beaches, a rich cultural heritage, and deemed an idyllic haven by international travellers who have only just started discovering the area.”

The resort will feature rooms, suites and a luxury collection of one, two and three-bedroom villas, all equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and deluxe furnishings. Not to mention an outstanding range of leisure facilities that appeal to couples and families including a spa, fitness centre, outdoor swimming pool and kids’ club, while the 18-hole Laguna Lang Co golf course, designed by sporting legend Sir Nick Faldo, is located just minutes away.

Mövenpick Resort Lang Co is also set to become a popular destination for corporate gatherings and special occasions, including beachfront weddings. Several meeting rooms and an expansive ballroom will cater to all types of events, from corporate retreats to incentives.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is bringing the best of “bistro” and “gastronomy” to its restaurants around the world in its latest “Bistronomie” food promotion, which runs from October 20 to November 20, 2017.

Made from the best quality ingredients and prepared to perfection, the seven dishes on its new “Bistronomie” menu include “Salade Niçoise”, “Plateau de Fruits de Mer” (Seafood platter), “Moules Marinières” (Mussels with garlic and sweet cream butter), “Cabillaud à la Bordelaise” (Cod fillet), “Pot au Feu à la Bourgeoise” (Beef topside hot pot) and “Cordon-bleu au Comté” (Veal rump steak).

Guests with a sweet tooth are also in for a treat with Mövenpick’s version of “Café Gourmand” – a French take on the British “afternoon tea”. The “Bistronomie” “Café Gourmand” combines aromatic Mövenpick coffee with “Reine de Saba” (“Queen of Sheba”), an irresistible chocolate cake baked with Mövenpick’s very own 72% cocoa Swiss chocolate.

“When it comes to gastronomy, Mövenpick is a pioneer, known for its culinary innovation and ability to create classic dishes with a twist, which is very much akin to the “Bistronomie” movement,” said Olivier Chavy, president and CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

Thomas Hollenstein, director of food & beverage in Europe, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, who has led the team of chefs developing the “Bistronomie” dishes, added: “We have encapsulated the essence of French cuisine, but in a fresh and exciting form and importantly, acknowledging the personal tastes of our discerning diners and guests around the world

Big-hearted guests at 46 Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts properties around the world have donated 8,500kg of food, clothing and educational supplies to support disadvantaged families, it was announced this week.

Southeast Asian Mövenpick hotels and resorts collected an impressive 2,276 kilos of much-needed supplies with Mövenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu and Mövenpick Siam Hotel Na Jomtien Pattaya together bringing in over 2000 kilos. Mövenpick Residences Bangtao Beach Phuket, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket, and Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali also contributed to the charity effort.

The generosity is the result of the global hospitality group’s successful 2017 ‘Kilo of Kindness’ charity drive, which ran from 1-15 September and asked guests and residents to drop off at least one kilo of supplies to any participating hotel.

“We are overwhelmed by the kind-heartedness of our guests and residents around the world and would like to thank each and every one of them for their generosity,” said Craig Cochrane, senior VP of Human Resources, Movenpick Hotels & Resorts. “By donating these essentials, we hope to make a difference to the lives of families in need as part of our ongoing support to the communities where our hotels and resorts are located,” he added.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has created a new committee to advise it how to attract millennial guests and staff.

The new team comprises “Generation Y” employees and entrepreneurs, which will now collaborate with the Swiss hotel group’s executive team as it steps up its efforts to target the millennial market.

The hand-selected “ExCom-Y Committee” consists of 10 people, including six company employees and four young business leaders. They include Jessica Houlgrave, who spent six years working for global financial institutions and is now studying for an Art Business Master’s degree at Sotheby’s Institute of Art.

“I am honoured to have been selected to take part in this ground-breaking initiative, which I believe sets Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts apart as a forward-thinking hospitality company that puts guest and talent needs first,” said Ms Houlgrave. “In the context of the ExCom-Y committee it means analysing the millennial mindset and lifestyle to help future-proof company strategy and I’m excited to be able to contribute my thoughts as part of this collaborative effort.”

Ms Houlgrave is joined on the committee by a group of entrepreneurs and business executives from Germany, France and the US, who are proficient in several disciplines including technology and hospitality.

They will work alongside a talented group of “Mövenpick Millennials” who have been selected from hotels in Dubai, Pattaya, Karachi and Switzerland, covering a range of departments including front office, sales & marketing, F&B, digital, brand and quality assurance. They were all born in the 1980s and 1990s.

“As we embark on an unprecedented growth phase, expanding our portfolio at a rapid rate, it’s paramount we seek input and insights from our colleagues, particularly our young talent, who possess an intimate understanding of Generation Y trends,” said Craig Cochrane, Mövenpick’s senior vice president of HR. “As millennials become a more influential demographic and contribute significantly to our overall guest profile, it is imperative we incorporate their needs and wishes into our hospitality offering.

“To be successful, we must listen to our team members and to our guests, and the ExCom-Y Committee is integral to our human resources and development strategies as we seek progressive methods to evolve our brand and meet future guest and talent demands,” he added.

Mövenpick noted that more than 30% of its guests are now considered “millennial”. This demographic group is considered to be constantly connected via mobile devices, and demand more in-depth travel experiences that introduce them to new cultures and activities. They also tend to combine business trips with personal vacations.

“We must not only recognise their needs as the customers of the future, but also as potential talent that we can engage and employ,” said Olivier Chavy, CEO of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

The ExCom-Y Committee will be called on around five times a year to attend and contribute to executive meetings.

When you were upgrading your PMS system, what trends were of particular interest to you?

Floor Bleeker, Chief Information Officer, Movenpick Group
Floor Bleeker, Chief Information Officer, Movenpick Group

As Mӧvenpick Hotels & Resorts is on track to operate 100 properties by 2020 (83 at present), we were particularly interested in the potential benefits of a Cloud PMS. Because of the brand’s simultaneous growth in four different regions, mobility and scalability were priorities. We needed a cost-effective, low-upkeep system that is lightweight enough to provide the same responsiveness to island resorts in Asia, as it does to city hotels in Europe for example.

We also wanted a solution that could provide enhanced guest recognition and business intelligence. Our company’s vision is to “extend Natural Enjoyment to our guests and partners around the world”. In Opera Cloud, we found a system that ultimately benefits our guests – through recognition and improved operations.

What makes your PMS system innovative/different from other PMS systems?

Our PMS is lightweight and 100% mobile. We achieve the same speed in Bali as we do in Amsterdam, and this element also complements the consistent brand standards we want to maintain. The mobile dashboards are very helpful and are accessible from any device and on a very low bandwidth.

What key considerations did you keep in mind for systems integration when implementing a new PMS?

Primarily, we knew it had to be available from anywhere on any device. As we prepared for integration with the next generation of guest experience technology, it was also important that we limit any possible disruption to the guest experience, to an absolute minimum and we therefore prioritise HTNG based interfaces.

What are the benefits of a cloud-based PMS?

Using a cloud based PMS means we have no hardware on site and as a result, we are also less dependent on internal IT specialists at each location. The security liability is transferred to the supplier and it also enabled us to shift the costs from capital expenditures (CAPEX) to operating expenses (OPEX).

Since we use one single database, enhanced guest recognition is a major benefit. Our hotel teams are enjoying meeting international guests that they can now recognise as global guests of Mӧvenpick.

The ability to cluster and centralise services makes a huge difference to our operations. Our Cloud based PMS is empowering Mӧvenpick’s commercial teams in Marketing, Sales, Business Intelligence, Revenue Management and Guest Data departments.

What role will mobility play in future PMS functionalities?

Mobility and self-service are the future. All functionality should be available on mobile devices and over the Internet for guests, as well as for staff members.

What other trends in the near future do you think will affect PMS functionalities?

Hotels continuously search for ways to differentiate themselves, so various trends and possibilities could affect future PMS functionality. The industry might see the elimination of front desks in certain properties, with an Uber-style check-in and check-out via an app.  There might be personalised revenue management programmes, bidding features and reverse auctions targeted at individuals.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has expanded its footprint in Pakistan after finalising an agreement to operate its third property in the country. The Swiss hospitality firm has signed a deal with the Orient Group of Companies to manage the 310-key Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Lahore, part of a new mixed-used development the government has earmarked as the city’s new commercial hub.

Set to be one of the tallest buildings in Pakistan when it opens in 2021, the property will be the focal point of the high-profile Finance and Trade Centre project in Johar Town, an up-and-coming district earmarked for significant development.

The hotel will also be close to the Lahore International Expo Centre, the Bank Square financial precinct and several corporate and government offices, as well as new and upcoming theme parks and shopping malls.

“Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Lahore will be perfectly positioned to capitalise on the significant resident and visiting population this new commercial hub will attract,” said Mian Ahmad Fazal, Executive Director of Orient Group of Companies.

“We are pleased to be able to support the government’s ambitions for infrastructure development and look forward to Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts setting new hospitality standards in Lahore, as it has in other key cities across the region.”

Known as the ‘city of gardens’, Lahore is the Punjab province’s capital and its commercial and banking centre.

The Finance and Trade Centre development, which aims to grow the city’s prominence as a regional financial hub, comes as Pakistan ploughs significant investment into developments designed to transform the country’s economic landscape.

Located at the heart of this new project, Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Lahore will feature 260 rooms and 50 serviced apartments; five restaurants and lounges; 1,500 square metres of meeting and event space, including a large ballroom; a 700-square-metre spa and fitness area; and a kids’ club and business centre.

Mövenpick already operates the 407-room Mövenpick Hotel Karachi and is scheduled to open the 361-key Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad in 2018.

“Signing our third property in Pakistan marks yet another milestone in our expansion strategy, which focuses on operating properties in key gateway cities across the Middle East and Asia regions,” said Andrew Langdon, Chief Development Officer, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“Pakistan is undergoing rapid development and we are actively seeking opportunities to further expand our footprint in a country that offers strong growth potential.”

As part of the agreement, the five-star hotels will offer online accommodation packages and direct ticketing options for visitors to Motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai, Legoland Dubai and Legoland Water Park.

Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate has created 13 new family suites which are conveniently equipped for guests travelling with small children. They feature a customised king-size bed and sofa bed for optimum comfort, theme park tickets, children’s amenities and PlayStation on request.

Guests can also look forward to the kids’ club and five hotel restaurants that serve international, Indian, Italian and Pan-Asian cuisine. This three-day intensive training event, which teaches its top executives invaluable business leadership strategies, is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to training and development.

Mövenpick’s President and CEO Oliver Chavy and Craig Cochrane Senior VP Human Resources opened the latest edition of the company’s Business Academy, which is taking place at Mövenpick Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech Hotel & Palais des Congrès from 10th to 14th April. It involves participants from Mövenpick’s hotels in Marrakech, Casablanca, Tangier, El Gouna, Gammarth, El Quseir, Sousse, Sharm El Sheikh, Accra, Cairo, Taba and El Sokhna.

“Our business is about people — the successful interaction between our employees and our guests — as we strive to create memorable moments that last a lifetime,” Olivier told Academy delegates.

“To make this magic happen, it is essential that we inspire and engage our colleagues at every level, using innovative and thought-provoking training techniques that empower them to deliver excellence across every guest’s touch point.”

The 38 Academy participants are attending three workshops covering topics that are essential to Mövenpick’s ongoing success: “Process-driven Strategy & Innovation”, “Business Financial Acumen”, and “Mastering the Leadership Code”.

The leaders invited to attend these sessions are encouraged to discuss their views to gain a rounded perspective. Complementing training with idea exchange helps participants to devise strategies that ultimately enhance the guest experience.

“The Business Academy demonstrates our unwavering commitment to training, development and career progression and it’s what sets Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts apart as one of the world’s leading and most progressive hospitality firms,” said Craig Cochrane Senior VP Human Resources.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has staged Business Academy sessions over the last seven years, running events several times annually in locations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa where the company now operates 83 properties. Three additional Business Academy events will be taking place during 2017 in Dubai, Amsterdam and Bangkok.

Along the wide, palm-lined avenues of Marrakech’s new city lies a luxury hotel that celebrates the city’s past whilst embracing its future.

Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech is an expansive, low-rise resort that manages to combine the charm of a leisure resort with facilities suitable for the largest of groups and international events.

The hotel features 503 rooms and suites
The hotel features 503 rooms and suites

Completely renovated just three years ago, the hotel has been styled on the theme of King Ahmad al-Mansour, the famous Moroccan sultan who led the country during the Saadi Dynasty of the 16th and 17th centuries, and brought prosperity to the country.

This is most evident in the use of water throughout the hotel; King Mansur was instrumental in developing water engineering in Morocco. Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech pays homage to this, and to Morocco’s verdant oases, with rippling streams, reflective pool sand gentling tricking waterfalls that create a spa-like ambience through the hotel. In the main courtyard, a 25-metre-long, palm-lined infinity pool provides the perfect place to unwind and cool off in the North African sun.

The group arrives at Mövenpick Hotel Mansur Eddahbi Marrakech
The group arrives at Mövenpick Hotel Mansur Eddahbi Marrakech

The buildings that comprise the property – all of which are all named after the family members of King Mansour – contain a selection of spacious rooms and suites. These range from the entry-level 30m² classic rooms to the 72m² suites, the larger of which feature two bedrooms, large bathtubs and terraces or balconies. For the ultimate indulgence, the luxury penthouse covers 290m² of living space with two bedrooms, a terrace and a private infinity pool.

Diners are treated to an array of culinary options, including international, Italian (King Mansour was a regular traveller to Italy) and casual grill restaurants, plus a stylish bar, all of which have the option of outdoor seating. The Manso Bar & Lounge also features a rooftop area that overlooks the Red City, and, being a Swiss brand, the Mövenpick also serves a daily chocolate “happy hour”.

But while the hotel is an excellent resort-style option for leisure travellers, it is in the event space where it comes to the fore. This is because Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech is directly attached to the Palais de Congress – Morocco’s largest conference centre, and one of the biggest in Africa. Its collection of 28 function spaces, auditoria and ballrooms offer state-of-the-art technology including multiple translation booths, enabling this impressive marble venue to handle large-scale international events, including African leaders’ summits and the recent COP 22 global climate change conference.

The entrance to the Palais de Congress

The hotel also features a separate group check-in area with direct access to the Palais de Congress, and these extensive facilities, along with the hotel’s extensive inventory of 503 rooms, makes Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech the go-to venue for Morocco’s MICE market.

Mövenpick hotels the world over aim to combine Swiss hospitality with local flair and favour. With its oasis-like ambience, royal theme and status as Morocco’s foremost conference venue, Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech captures the spirit of Marrakech – both ancient and modern.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has marked yet another milestone in its Middle East expansion strategy having inked an agreement with the Civil Service Employees Pension Fund to operate its first property in Oman’s capital city, Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Al Azaiba Muscat.

Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Al Azaiba Muscat

Part of a design-led upscale mixed-used development, the property will capitalise on its prime location in Muscat’s commercial hub, the Ghala District, adjacent to the Sultan Qaboos Highway and close to the new international airport and Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Al Azaiba Muscat will feature 274 guest rooms and suites and 50 serviced apartments. Standout facilities will include six market-oriented food and beverage outlets, a rooftop restaurant, swimming pool, meeting and event space, a ballroom, a rooftop gym with spa, executive lounge and a residents’ lounge.

“This new property will be a welcome addition to our already extensive portfolio of hotels in the Middle East,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and Africa. “With Muscat undergoing rapid development and significant funds being invested into major tourism infrastructure projects, the time is right to put the Mövenpick brand on the map in this important regional city.”

Oman is considered a market brimming with opportunities for the hospitality sector, with some USD 640 million ploughed into travel and tourism projects in 2015, or 3.1% of total investment, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) statistics reveal.

In 2016, the Sultanate was on track to receive more than 1.8 million international tourists – a figure expected to almost double to 3.34 million by 2026.

“Oman’s tourism industry is flourishing, and we are enormously encouraged by the government and private sector’s commitment to exploit its true potential,” said Amir Lababedi, Vice President Development – Middle East and Africa. “This management agreement consolidates Mövenpick’s position as one of the region’s leading hotel operators and marks another milestone in our strategy to maximise our exposure in every major Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market.”

He added, “As we accelerate our regional expansion, signing management deals at a record pace, we will certainly be seeing more opportunities to grow our footprint in the Sultanate.”

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is launching a new room category concept that it says guarantees guests what they value the most – a good night’s sleep.

The new ‘Sleep individually different’ will offer:

  •           Personalised comfort
  •           An individually different bed
  •           Complete darkness
  •           Total silence

All Mövenpick hotels in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland will feature the new room category from 17th March, which is World Sleep Day.

“Our primary role as a hospitality specialist is to exceed our guests’ expectations in all that we do. As a company that prides itself on finding innovative ways to improve guest satisfaction, we decided to team up with the Swedish bed manufacturer YouBed. Their unique adaptable beds have been tested by our guests on-site over a period of six months and the results were overwhelmingly positive,” said Ola Ivarsson, Chief Operating Officer Europe.

“The rooms offer a tailor-made sleep like no other. The new beds and our customised rooms adopt the latest technology to help guests personalise their environment, creating optimal conditions for deep sleep. As the first global hotel operator to introduce a room category that offers a bespoke sleep experience, we are an industry pioneer, catering to consumer demand for personalisation to a level never witnessed before.”

Mattias Sörensen, the founder and CEO of YouBed also believes that Mövenpick’s new room concept is revolutionary within the hotel industry.

“Studies reveal that nothing has a greater impact on customer satisfaction than a comfortable bed. Given that all guests have different comfort needs, it is groundbreaking that Mövenpick now offers rooms with a one-bed-fits-all solution. Each guest can also fine tune different parts of the bed, to achieve a really perfect personalisation”, he said.

The ‘Sleep individually different’ rooms, which are priced at just €15 more than a standard room, offer several complimentary amenities such as sleeping masks, ear plugs, lavender pads and black-out stickers that cover lights on electronic devices. Guests in ‘Sleep’ rooms can also tuck into free slumber-inducing goodies such as herbal teas and Mövenpick chocolate.

To create the ideal environment for rest, the rooms are located in quiet areas of the hotel and are kitted out with night curtains for total darkness and special high quality natural bedding. Neck pillows and allergy-free bedding are available too.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has entered a management agreement with Karan Gulf Services for a new hotel within Saudi Arabia’s Wa’ad Al Shamal industrial city.

The 237-room hotel is set to be the largest hotel project in Wa’ad Al Shamal City, as well as the entire northern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The city, located about 30 kilometres from Turaif, is being developed by Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden) and covers 450 square kilometres in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Frontier. It will host approximately 100,000 residents.

The city will tap into the region’s significant phosphate reserves and will support and provide extensive opportunities to many upstream and downstream industries, which have already been anchored by major global players including Saudi Aramco, SABIC and SCECO.

These companies will provide the infrastructure necessary to initiate the project and stimulate further activities relating to phosphate mining. The mineral industry is set to become the third pillar of the Kingdom’s economy after oil and petrochemical, in line with the country’s Vision 2030.

Set to open in the second half of 2018, Mövenpick Hotel Wa’ad Al Shamal, while primarily targeting the corporate market, will have a resort ambience. The property will offer three food and beverage outlets, extensive meeting and event space, male and female wellness areas as well as recreation facilities, designed to serve hotel guests, the community of Wa’ad Al Shamal and the northern region.

“We are proud to have been selected as the hotel operator for this fantastic project in the region,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and South Asia. “We firmly support the government’s vision of economic diversification. Considering the current lack of upscale accommodation, we see the development of this hotel as strategically important to the continued growth of the city. “Furthermore, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will be the first international upscale hotel in the northern region of Saudi Arabia and this new signing will consolidate our position as one of the strongest international hotel brands in the country and the Middle East.”

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts already operates 11 hotels in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Five more projects in the country will be launched in the next three years. They are Mövenpick Residences Al Khobar, Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Al Tahlia Jeddah, Mövenpick Hotel Financial District Riyadh, Mövenpick Hotel Heraa Jeddah and Mövenpick Hotel Wa’ad Al Shamal.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has rolled out its new vanilla-inspired savoury menu at all its properties, following the concept’s overwhelming success in Europe.

White onion velouté

Discerning diners can sample the innovative ‘Vanille Salée’ promotion from February 21 to March 21, 2017.

Comprising six one-of-a-kind vanilla-enhanced dishes, the concept is now being made available at properties across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Traditionally used for desserts, vanilla produces exciting results when added to hearty savoury dishes: its mild flavour harmonises to surprising perfection with white meats and fish. Subtly reinforcing roasting aromas and herbal scents, vanilla also transforms tomatoes, beetroot and even onions with an unexpected touch of the exotic.

This exceptional taste experience has been encapsulated in six savoury vanilla creations, championing the queen of spices at Mövenpick hotels worldwide.
The tempting entrées include “White onion velouté” (soup), “Sashimi of tuna and salmon” and “Goat cheese and figs salad”, while the main course menu features “Pike perch filet and endive”, “Veal tenderloin and Garden Vegetables” and “Guinea fowl breast Melba”.

“These culinary creations have been concocted by our talented Director of Food & Beverage Europe, Thomas Hollenstein, who has set out to surprise our guests with this interesting mix of flavours,” said Olivier Chavy, President and CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“‘Vanille Salée’ is a real palate pleaser and we hope food enthusiasts who dine at our properties around Asia, Africa and Middle East will enjoy this new gastronomic experience.”

Bourbon vanilla
Fine Bourbon vanilla is used in all the dishes. Veracruz, a region of the Gulf of Mexico, is regarded as the global home of vanilla-growing. As long ago as the 14th century, the Aztecs enjoyed the fragrance of fermented orchid pods, but it was not until the 19th century that cuttings of vanilla spice arrived in Europe, in the botanical gardens of Paris. From there, they were transported to Madagascar and Réunion, then known as Île Bourbon – hence the name Bourbon vanilla. The French titles of the six ‘Vanille Salée’ dishes pay tribute to vanilla’s origins.

Sami Aawar, a professional hotelier with 20 years’ experience in the region, has been appointed General Manager at Mövenpick Hotel Doha.

Sami Aawar
Sami Aawar

His solid career with Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts started in 2002 as Front Office Duty Manager in Beirut. First he was promoted to Assistant Front Office Manager and later filled the Front Office Manager position at Mövenpick Resort Al Bidaa Kuwait in 2007, where he gained extensive exposure in the housekeeping department. In 2011, Aawar was appointed as Rooms Division Manager at Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha.

An enriching experience as Director of Operations at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach Dubai followed in 2014. This was a catalyst for his rise to the role of Task Force General Manager of Mövenpick Hotel Al Aziziyah and Mövenpick Hotel Doha in 2016. The formal appointment to general manager is a result of his successful six-month Task Force assignment in Doha.

“My main goal is to target outstanding guest satisfaction and great relationships among team members,” said Aawar. “It is an extraordinary time to be based in Doha and there is a tangible feel of excitement in the air with future events like the Football World Cup to plan for and look forward to.”

The appointment is a doubly proud moment for the company as Aawar was part of Mövenpick Talent Development Centre – a programme committed to identifying and building a pipeline of future General Managers from within the company. The Talent Development Centre combines in-depth assessments, simulations and self-reflection that helps pinpoint development opportunities. As part of the process, each participant is partnered with a General Manager who acts as a mentor, facilities learning and assists with progression.

Aawar holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Business Management and is fluent in English, Arabic and French. He started his hospitality career in his native Lebanon, where he joined the food and beverage department of the Al Bustan Hotel in 1997. In the following years, he transferred to front office and worked in independent boutique hotels before joining Mövenpick 15 years ago.

Aawar is joined in Doha by his wife and three young children.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts signed a record number of management contracts for new properties in 2016.

The Swiss hotel group, which already operated 83 hotels worldwide, penned deals for 13 more properties last year, the majority of which are in Asia and the Middle East.

These new signings will add more than 9,000 keys to Mövenpick’s global inventory over the next four years, with all pipelined properties on track to open by the end of 2020.

New deals signed in 2016 will see the company debut in several destinations, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

“2016 was our most successful year yet in terms of the number of new hotels we signed, which averaged more than one a month and grew our pipelined portfolio by more than 30%,” said Olivier Chavy, Mövenpick’s president & CEO. “We not only consolidated our position in key growth markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Thailand, where we are now a dominant player, but signed management agreements for properties in strategic locations where we will introduce the Mövenpick brand for the first time.

“We enter 2017 in high confidence, building on our achievements over the past 12 months with firm plans to further grow our portfolio in line with our ambitious global expansion strategy. We’re well on track to operating over 100 properties by 2020,” he added.

In Asia, Mövenpick signed five new properties in 2016: Mövenpick Residences Ekkamai Bangkok (due to open in 2017), Mövenpick Resort Khao Yai (2017) and Mövenpick Resort Mai Khao (2018), all of which are in Thailand, plus Mövenpick Hotel Khulna in Bangladesh (2020) and Mövenpick Hotel Quang Binh in Vietnam (2020). The company also opened the 260-room Mövenpick Siam Hotel Pattaya in Thailand.

In the Middle East, four new management agreements were signed, including the newly-opened Mövenpick Hotel Al Aziziyah Doha in Qatar, Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Al Burj Business Bay Dubai (2018), Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Al Tahlia Jeddah in Saudi Arabia (2018) and Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island Ras Al Khaimah, UAE (2019).

In Africa, deals were completed for properties in Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire.

Already in 2017 the company has opened its first hotels in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Kenya and plans to add a further four new properties, located in Tunisia, the Philippines and Thailand.

Mövenpick Hotel Colombo

The 24-floor Mövenpick Hotel Colombo is the first international five-star property to open in the city in 25 years, a milestone that reflects the country’s new-found energy and optimism. It’s also the destination’s first urban hotel and introduces a ‘vertical experience’ like no other, with every floor, from the ground to the roof, offering a different themed concept, taking guests on a journey of discovery.

Set to become a Colombo icon, this edgy, but sophisticated property is characterised by its modern architecture. The epitome of style, the diamond-shaped exterior blends well with the organic hanging gardens, boasting some 14,310 plants.

All 219 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, the Rooftop Bar boasts the best city and ocean views in town, and the property’s inventive culinary offering promises fun and theatre with a unique design edge.

“We are offering guests a vertical experience like no other, giving them the opportunity to view the beauty of Colombo from a new perspective and across many exciting concepts,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and South Asia.

“Mövenpick Hotel Colombo is an inspirational modern landmark that introduces exciting new hospitality concepts to the city; this signifies a new era of prosperity for an island nation re-energised and undergoing rapid development.”

Located in the heart of Colombo’s thriving business, commercial and political district, close to the city’s famous ‘Pola’ – the bustling local market – and several historical sites, the property’s open-plan design with oversized windows gives a sense of space.

All of the guest rooms, including the Junior Suites, Executive Suites and the Presidential Suite, are luxuriously furnished and provide access to the rooftop infinity pool and Jacuzzi. With the fast-growing corporate and incentive markets in mind, the property offers the largest executive lounge and rooms in the city, as well as a dedicated business traveller reception, while Banquet facilities include five meeting rooms and a boardroom.

True to the hospitality brand’s gastronomic roots, the dining experience is the heart and soul of the hotel, with seven creative bar and restaurant concepts from which to choose, all promising unique themes, theatre and cuisine created with passion.

They include the Brasserie – Colombo’s first in-hotel classic French restaurant, as well as: Robata Grill & Lounge serving Japanese cuisine and sushi; all-day-dining venue AYU; Vistas Rooftop Bar & Lounge; the exclusive Mansion bar and night lounge; the chic Lobby Lounge; and the Pool Bar where drinks and light meals can be enjoyed while savouring the city vistas.

Guests can also enjoy a workout with a view at the fully-equipped gym, located 100 metres high, or relax at the Spa Ceylon, where signature treatments use natural oils and herbs.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has entered Sri Lanka with the launch of a new property in the country’s capital, Colombo.

The new Mövenpick Hotel Colombo becomes the city’s first new international five-star property in 25 years, and is set to be a new landmark in Colombo. Rising 24 floors from street-level, the hotel offers 219 rooms and suites plus a series of high-rise, high-end facilities with views of the Indian Ocean.

The diamond-patterned exterior of the tower will also be eye-catching, with a hanging garden featuring more than 14,310 plants.

“We are offering guests a vertical experience like no other, giving them the opportunity to view the beauty of Colombo from a new perspective,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Mövenpick’s chief operating officer for the Middle East & South Asia. “Mövenpick Hotel Colombo is an inspirational modern landmark that… signifies a new era of prosperity for an island nation re-energised and undergoing rapid development.”

Mövenpick Hotel Colombo is likely to become a major new F&B venue in the city, with seven outlets including French, Japanese and international restaurants and a rooftop bar. The hotel’s fitness centre is set 100 metres above the ground, while there is also a spa and a rooftop pool. For the MICE market the hotel features five meeting rooms and a boardroom.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is now present in three South Asian countries: India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The country’s Sri Lankan debut also follows the recent opening of Indonesia’s first Mövenpick Hotel, located in Bali.

Mövenpick Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel Dubai has been awarded Green Gold Membership by international certification body, Green Globe, (GGC), which is a structured assessment of the sustainability performance of any travel and tourism businesses.

The hotel recently replaced 800 incandescent lightbulbs with energy efficient LEDs, helping to deliver energy reduction of 1.28% alone in 2015.
The hotel recently replaced 800 incandescent lightbulbs with energy efficient LEDs, helping to deliver energy reduction of 1.28% alone in 2015.

The hotel qualified for Gold Membership after five years of consistent certification.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is the largest international hotel group to commit to Green Globe Certification for all of its properties worldwide and commenting on behalf of Mövenpick Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel Dubai, General Manager, Robert Barker said:

“The hotel has now been recertified by Green Globe for five consecutive years, which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, operating best practice in sustainability.

“We now join an elite group of enterprises to hold the coveted gold membership status worldwide and along with our business partners, we are committed to making a difference by reducing any negative impact the hotel may have on the environment,” he added.

UAE-based Farnek, Green Globe’s preferred partner in the Middle East, carried out the assessment of 44 core criteria supported by over 385 compliance indicators, measuring energy and water consumption as well as waste management, with its online Hotel Optimizer benchmarking software.

“The hotel has made great efforts lowering its carbon footprint over the past five years. For example, a recent lightbulb replacement programme has seen 800 incandescent lamps replaced with energy efficient LEDs, helping to deliver energy reduction of 1.28% alone,” said Sandrine Le Biavant, Director Consultancy, Farnek.

“This is approximately 172,194 kWh lower or around the same amount of energy used by 190 households over the last five years.”

Waste reduction has also been a priority for the hotel and since implementing a paper and carton recycling system in 2011, the hotel has collected an average of 1,860 kilograms per month for recycling comprised of 92% carton and 2% paper. This is roughly equivalent to protecting around 380, 20-year-old trees every year.

The hotel’s waste diversion from landfill was at 17.74% in 2015 and this year has increased to more than 20%. Annual waste reduction is at approximately 60 metric tonnes, a 7.1% saving in 2015 and this year a waste audit has been completed to identify even further reductions.

To further improve its green credentials, the property installed an electric car charger earlier in 2016, which is one of only two docking stations located within a hotel in Dubai. The charging station is capable of charging two cars simultaneously and is free to use for electric vehicle drives with a green card charger.

“It is critical to maintain standards and increase sustainability initiatives that will create a difference, economically, socially, culturally and environmentally over the long term,” added Le Biavant.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is undertaking a major expansion in Asia, with plans to more than triple its regional portfolio from nine to 30 properties by 2020.

Speaking to Travel Daily at ITB Asia on Wednesday, Holger Jakobs, Mövenpick’s vice president of sales & marketing for Asia, revealed that Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia would account for a large part of this growth, with multiple new hotels either signed or under negotiation in these countries.

“There is a lot of focus on our region,” said Jakobs. “We just signed a triple deal in Thailand, which will take us to seven hotels in the country. These will be quite quick turnarounds.”

Indeed, the triple Thai deal, which was reported in Travel Daily Asia last week, will see the launch of the Mövenpick Residences Ekkamai in Bangkok before the end of 2016, and Mövenpick Resort Khao Yai, in a mountainous region northeast of Bangkok, in January 2017. Mövenpick Resort Mai Khao Phuket has also been signed and is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of next year, following a major renovation that will increase the property’s room count.

The launch of the serviced residence in Bangkok also forms part of the Mövenpick expansion strategy, as Jakobs explained.

“We have city hotels, we have resorts, but we also have branded serviced residences which we already do in the Middle East. In fact the Pattaya hotel we opened earlier this year also has branded residences. If the opportunities come up we’d be more than happy to incorporate [serviced residences] as part of our negotiations.”

Vietnam will also see a series of new Mövenpick hotels in the coming years. Mövenpick Cam Ranh will open close to Nha Trang in Q4 2017, and Jakobs told Travel Daily that his company is “talking with the same developer [about a hotel] in Danang”. Meanwhile, a large-scale Mövenpick resort is currently rising on the island of Phu Quoc and another property is in the pipeline for Quy Nhon, north of Nha Trang.

Jakobs also revealed that the company is “looking very closely” at potential new locations in Ho Chi Minh City, following the earlier rebranding of Mövenpick Saigon. “Vietnam is definitely a hot area for us,” he added.

Another country set to welcome multiple Mövenpick hotels is Malaysia, with Jakobs confirming plans to launch a 300-room conference hotel close to Kuala Lumpur International Airport next autumn, and a beach resort in Kuala Terengganu the following spring. A third Malaysian property – a city hotel in Kota Bharu – is also in the pipeline.

The opening of the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali early next year will mark the Swiss hotel group’s debut in Indonesia, and Jakobs revealed that Mövenpick is also talking to an owner who has properties in Jakarta and Surabaya.

“We’re saying, ‘let’s open [Jakarta] and see what else is on the cards’. We’re definitely interested to expand this further,” he said.

Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali is due to open early next year

In the Philippines, aside from a new resort in Boracay, the Swiss hotel group is “looking a lot at Manila”, and construction is also ongoing in China, at a place called Chifeng in Inner Mongolia.

In Bangladesh, the company recently signed a property in Khulna, the country’s third largest city, and Jakobs added that Mövenpick is “following up with another development in the north… which will hopefully open the door to Dhaka and Chittagong”.

Finally, Mövenpick will make its Sri Lankan debut in Colombo next year, and the company is also “in the final stages” of securing its first property in the Maldives.

“As you can see, we’re more than halfway there (towards the target of 30 hotels by 2020) and this year hasn’t even finished yet. We’re very confident that we’ll hit the ball out of the park. The future looks very bright for Mövenpick in Asia, and globally,” he concluded.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has announced it will open a third property in Morocco – the Mövenpick Hotel & Palais Des Congrès, Marrakech – in Q4, 2015.

Movenpick Marrakech.
Movenpick Marrakech.

Owned by Kuwait’s Al Ajial Asset Fund, the 501-room five-star property will complete an extensive renovation and expansion programme, costing approximately $69 million, before reopening under the Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts brand.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from the historic heart of Marrakech and just 15 minutes’ drive from Marrakech Menara Airport. Among the 501 guestrooms and suites will be family, business and executive rooms, as well as additional suites, which will be housed in a newly-built wing.

Moroccan architectural details and orange tree gardens complement leisure facilities such as a spa, gym, swimming pool and children’s pool. Seven dining and entertainment venues will include a signature Moroccan restaurant and nightclub.

“Although it is usually associated with leisure tourism, Marrakech continues to be a hub for business and incentive travel. Owing to the world-class facilities within the hotel as well as at the Palais des Congrès, attracting MICE business especially from Europe, the Gulf states and the US will be a key focus,” said Alan O’Dea, senior vice president Africa, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

A dedicated entrance connects the hotel to Morocco’s largest convention centre, the renowned Palais des Congrès, which will also be operated by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts. It includes flexible function space of 5,600 square metres, exhibition floor space of 2,700 square metres, two auditoriums and outdoor event areas.

The Movenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket has completed the refurbishment of some of its rooms and restaurants.

The project has seen the addition of 18 family rooms and a series of one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. The new accommodation options form part of the renovated Saeng Chan wing of the hotel.

The family rooms are 42m² in size and can host two adults and two children, while the suites range in size (up to 149m² for the three-bedroom option) and also feature dining rooms.

The renovated wing is situated close to the beach and the four newly-renovated restaurants, which form part of a plaza-style F&B area.

These restaurants include Mint, an al fresco restaurant and bar offering tapas-style sharing dishes, El Gaucho, a Brazilian churrasco with an extensive wine list, Orient Asia, which specialises in modern Asian cuisine, and Café Studio, a coffee-shop serving pizzas, sandwiches and wraps.

“It has been fantastic to see these wonderful new resort additions take shape over the last seven months,” said Hansruedi Frutiger, general manager of Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket. “I have no doubt that families will love the extra space, convenient location and benefits that our new rooms and suites offer, as well as the vibrant dining atmosphere in our restaurants.”

In addition to its rooms and villas, the resort also features three swimming pools, a kids’ club, spa and 10 meeting rooms.

Movenpick will concentrate its African growth on Egypt while hunting for sites in sub-Saharan Africa, Travel Daily has heard.

Stephen Banks, director of sales and marketing for Africa at the hotel group revealed occupancies for its Egypt hotels has more than doubled at the start of this year compared to the lows seen in the last three years.

Hotels in the country were typically only 30% full at their worst, where now Movenpick’s Cairo, Sharm el Skeikh and El Gouna hotels have been 67%, 70% and 55% full respectively.

“2013 was meant to be the year everything improved and even January 2011 had started very well but the revolution knocked it back in March and April. 2012 was better and 2013 was at first but after July it dipped again, so we are looking forward to steady growth and more normal times from October this year,” he explained.

Egypt’s tourism is expected to pick up more this year particularly when the winter 2014/15 season kicks in and confidence has come back.

“The British market is generally very resilient and once the FCO advice was lifted there was an upsurge in bookings and people like to regularly visit Egypt,” he said. “The pick-up will be quite last minute and it has been a struggle but we are here for the long run and cannot complain now as occupancies are improving.”

While protests have largely died down now, demonstrations are expected to spark when elections take place in April and June.

Although tourism in the country has suffered Banks believes the country is in a better political state now and Movenpick’s long-term vision for the country indicates its optimism.

The UK travel trade is also willing to get passengers back, with Banks receiving positivity on a recent roadshow in the UK.

“I had some very positive feedback from the UK trade as the Brits are very loyal to Egypt and are generally very aware of the situation and well informed with what is happening,” he said. “People here are willing to come back to a destination when they know it is safe.”

Nile cruises are yet to have picked up as quickly as clients on those are typically from the US and they are more reluctant than others. However Movenpick is running some vessels when it can and the market is showing “good signs of recovery”.

Movenpick’s concentration in Africa will be mainly around Egypt but also ‘unchartered’ areas such as Nairobi, Nigeria, Tanzania and the Congo.

More British tourists are heading back to Tunisia now unrest in the country has settled.

Numbers from the Tunisian National Tourist Office said 54, 752 Brits visited Tunisia in June this year, up 46% on June 2012 and 42% higher than June 2010.

In the first half of the year up to June there was a 31% increase in UK visitors.

As well as a more settled political situation, the rise has been attributed to more routes, hotel openings and tour operator promotions. These include the new Radisson Blu hotel in Hammamet; Thomson’s new regional flights from the UK to Enfidha and two hotel openings in Djerba – the Welcome Meridiana and Movenpick.

“We’re delighted to see Brits going in larger numbers than ever before to Tunisia,” said Wahida Jaiet, UK & Ireland Director for the Tunisian National Tourist Office.

“This year, we’ve worked hard to extend Tunisia’s appeal by showcasing our 3,000 years of culture, outstanding natural landscape, prestigious golf courses, authentic agrotourism experiences and boutique hotels, so it’s fantastic to see that our efforts have led to a record-breaking number of UK tourists visiting our shores,” she added.

Mövenpick’s hotels and resorts in Asia and the Middle East are to offer local experiences to guests through its concierges.

The hotel chain is offering the activities that are “light years away” from tourist attractions to showcase local culture as part of its new Local Flair Getaway concept.

The experience range from talking to a vet at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital to seeing the secret Saigon tunnels used in the Vietnam war.

“More and more travellers want to engage with a destination in an authentic meaningful way,” said Andreas Mattmüller, chief operating officer for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts Middle East and Asia. “They want to learn about local cultures, talk to local people and enjoy local experiences rather than just visit the sights.”

Differentiation is carving a niche for oneself, in keeping with this trend, the Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel in Dubai, managed by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, have rolled out its authentic oriental services which include traditional Chinese dining and entertainment options to attract Chinese visitors.

With the ever increasing growth in population of Chinese expats within the UAE, and China expecting to produce over 100 million outbound travellers by 2020, the Chinese market is much sought after within the Middle East.

“Ibn Battuta landed in China in 1346 and he travelled as far inland as Beijing and so he is known by the Chinese. In recognition of that, we have used an oriental theme to redecorate our eighth floor – the number eight in Chinese culture is considered very lucky, furthermore we have 88 arabesque lanterns installed in our Al Bahou Hall as well as a Chinese suite,” said Andrew Hughes, director of sales and marketing, Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel.

China remains to be one of the strong key markets for the hotel and is now the third biggest market after United Kingdom and Germany with the Chinese leisure and corporate visitor-base growing steadily.  “We have taken into account that to be successful in the Chinese market requires a deep understanding of the Chinese culture which is translated through our services and even physical elements such as our architecture which have made us a success story within this market.” continues Hughes.

Furthermore, over 20 Chinese speaking staff has been employed to cater to increasing Chinese visitors.  Today, the hotel expects a 6 to 7% of its market share to come from the Chinese market.

Chinese guests staying at ‘the Gate’ will be presented with a social media card, which provides details of the hotels ‘Weibo’ page (a popular micro-blog used in China), a qq account (a popular instant messaging service used by the Chinese) and a link to the hotels web page that explains the history of the hotel in Mandarin.

Guests will also be able to feel closer to home as the hotel now has two Mahjong tables which are placed in the Al Bahou hall and outside the hotel’s Chinese restaurant – Shanghai Chic. Mahjong is the most popular game in China.

“Our aim for acquiring the Mahjong tables is for us to provide a new form of entertainment to our guests.  A number of our Chinese speaking employees actually plays Mahjong regularly and will be able to teach guests how to play, we will also be starting a Mahjong club for the local residents after the summer,” added Hughes.
