Munich Airport International (MAI) has secured a contract from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) to operate and manage the USD 2.7 billion Terminal One at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

MAI will operate as EWR Terminal One and oversee operations, maintenance and concession functions once the terminal is completed. Terminal One is replacing the outmoded Terminal A and is scheduled to be fully operational by 2022. The new operating company EWR Terminal One also will be making short-term customer enhancements in Terminal A until that terminal is closed.

“We wanted to bring a world leader in customer service and concession management to Newark Liberty, and MAI fits the bill,” said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of Port Authority. “Brand new Terminal One will improve the travel experience for New Jersey travellers while creating new jobs and business opportunities in the region.”

“We look forward to bringing world-class operations, services and amenities to the new Terminal One,” said Dr. Ralf Gaffal, managing director of Munich Airport International.

Terminal One will feature cutting-edge digital technology, superior dining and retail options in about one million square feet of space, about 20 percent larger than Terminal A. It will accommodate an estimated 13.6 million passengers annually on three levels. The new terminal will have 33 common-use gates

Is now the right time for SIA’s relaunch of the world’s longest flight? https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/is-right-time-for-relaunch-longest-flight/ Tue, 05 Jun 2018 14:23:55 +0000 http://www.traveldailymedia.com/?p=471231 The post Is now the right time for SIA’s relaunch of the world’s longest flight? appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced the return of its non-stop intercontinental service between Singapore and New York using its new ultra-long range plane, the Airbus A350-900ULR from 11 October 2018.

The Airbus A350-900ULR

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced the return of its non-stop intercontinental service between Singapore and New York using its new ultra-long range plane, the Airbus A350-900ULR from 11 October 2018.

“Pushing the boundaries”

Discussing the relaunch of the world’s longest flight Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines said: “Singapore Airlines has always taken pride in pushing the boundaries to provide the best possible travel convenience for our customers, and we are pleased to be leading the way with these new non-stop flights using the latest-technology, ultra-long-range Airbus A350-900ULR.

“The flights will offer our customers the fastest way to travel between the two cities – in great comfort, together with Singapore Airlines’ legendary service – and will help boost connectivity to and through the Singapore hub.”

Feted as the world’s longest flight, the journey between Singapore’s Changi airport and Newark Liberty International Airport was originally launched 14 years ago, in the summer of 2004, using the Airbus A340-500, which covered the 9,534 mi trip with a flight time of 18 hours.

Nigam, CEO of SimpliFlying and author of SOAR, was a regular user of the original connection when he would hop aboard the service as part of his commute from Singapore, into New York and onto Boston – a flight he remembers with great fondness:

“The first time I took that flight I knew that this was completely something else. Firstly it was all premium economy, which in a low density aircraft means you don’t see a lot of people on board. There weren’t 500 people trying to jostle for their bags or squeeze into their seats.

“Plus, being the aviation geek that I am, I absolutely loved the boarding process – it was not chaotic at all, and once everyone had boarded the SIA attendants came out to greet everyone personally before taking their orders for food – with full eye contact – it was very personal and friendly. A service which is much easier to provide when there aren’t many people on board”.

Shashank Nigam

However, it wasn’t just the passenger service he enjoyed and Nigam went on to explain how the lengthy journey allowed him to catch up on much needed R&R and arrive in NYC well rested – not to mention the opportunity to watch up to ten movies per trip.

“I’ve tried a few but this is one that I’m really excited about”

Closing his comments Nigam enthused: “I’m pretty excited about the world’s longest flight coming back and I’ve tried a few – Bangkok to New York, Bangkok to Los Angeles  – but this is one that I’m really excited about. With the brand new AB350 and the stellar service of the SIA cabin combined – I think we are in for some really good times and I can’t wait for it to start.”

What went wrong the first time?

So, if this epic journey could charm the likes of Shashank Nigam, for whom the phrase “experienced flier” is a huge understatement, then why was it cancelled in 2013, just one year shy of its tenth anniversary? That’s a question I put to Singapore Airlines, and the airlines’s PR spokesperson replied citing one of the very reasons Nigam liked it so much – namely, low passenger numbers:

“We previously operated daily Singapore-Newark flights using the A340-500s. However, the economics were challenging due to the prevailing fuel prices then, and we returned the aircraft to Airbus which resulted in the cessation of our non-stop flights. At that time, there was no replacement aircraft in our fleet with sufficient range and operating economics for the route.”

“The economics will improve, but whether they improve enough to make the service sustainable remains to be seen”

Or, as Brett Snyder – self-professed airline dork and author of the Cranky Flier blog – put it when I asked him the same question, “the flight was cancelled because the only aircraft that could make it nonstop was an A340-500 that guzzled fuel and couldn’t take that many passengers”.

Indeed, when SIA ordered the A340-500 the cost of fuel was only 42 cents per gallon but by the time they went into service this had shot up to 93 cents per gallon, before reaching a peak of USD2.83 in 2013 – when the service finished.

As one might suspect, the airline believes now is the right moment to relaunch, because, as SIA’s spokeperson said: The introduction of the much more efficient A350-900ULR to our fleet enables us to relaunch ultra-long range flights from Singapore to the US in a commercially viable manner.”

Brett Snyder

This is something the Cranky Flier takes a less certain view of: “Singapore Airlines now is taking delivery of the A350-900 ULR which is far more fuel efficient. The economics will improve, but whether they improve enough to make the service sustainable remains to be seen.”

Will the new service be successful? As you would expect from a stalwart member of the Skytrax list of five-star airlines, SIA has got the passenger service side of things down pat. The rest is economics, tempered by politics.

Recent fuel prices have dropped well below the USD2.83 per litre that bested SIA in 2013; it stands at USD1.17 at the time of writing, but the wide-reaching lack of political stability and its knock-on effects to the global economy makes me think SIA’s timing could be off and that the relaunch is less of a sure thing.

We wish SIA the best and look forward to seeing the service succeed – and it seems that we aren’t the only ones.

Cathay Pacific will start flying its new Airbus A350 aircraft to New York later this year.

Effective 29 October 2017, the airline’s daily flights between Hong Kong and Newark Liberty International Airport will switch from a Boeing 777-300ER to the Airbus A350-900. The new twin-aisle jet features 280 seats – 38 in business class, 28 in premium economy and 214 in economy – plus in-flight Wi-Fi, power outlets and USB ports.

From the same day, the A350 will also be deployed on one of three daily Hong Kong-San Francisco flights, while Cathay’s four daily flights to New York’s JFK Airport will continue to be operated by a 777-300ER, which still make up the majority of Cathay Pacific’s long-haul fleet.

“The A350-900 is unrivalled in terms of sustainability and passenger experience,” said Philippe Lacamp, Cathay’s senior vice president for the Americas. “The introduction of the A350 as part of our five daily flights from the New York metropolitan area, complementing the Boeing 777-300ER from JFK, delivers on this promise. Not only can customers choose from five different departure times across two airports, but for the first time, they will be able to factor in aircraft preference as well.”

Under the new A350 schedule, flight CX899 departs HKIA daily at 1800 and arrives at Newark Liberty airport at 2140. The return service will then leave at 0110, arriving back in Hong Kong at 0500 the following day.

These times allow inbound passengers to connect at HKIA to Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and more than 20 cities in mainland China, without a lengthy layover.

Cathay Pacific has so far taken delivery of 16 A350-900 aircraft, with six still due to arrive, along with firm orders for 26 larger A350-1000s.

“This new route will connect America’s largest metropolitan area and Dubai through one of Europe’s great capitals,” said Hubert Frach, Divisional Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West, Emirates. “The launch of this year-round daily service will allow us to offer Emirates’ unique product and award-winning service to passengers on a route long neglected by other airlines. We expect this service to generate consistently high demand and enhance business, culture and leisure connections on both sides of the Atlantic.”

“It is always a great pleasure to announce new air services, route expansions and partnerships at our airport,” said Diane Papaianni, the General Manager at Newark Liberty International Airport.  “Our airport has a vast network of destinations, and we are delighted to have Emirates join our airline family and offer more travel options to our customers.”

“Emirates’ direct, year-round operations on the Athens-New York route is a spectacular development for the Athens’ market, enhancing its connectivity and presenting the traveling public with new travel options on Emirates’ excellent product. At the same time, Athens’ strong traffic volumes to/from the US, underpinned by the vibrant Greek-American community, signify the potential and the success of the route. Travellers in the Indian city of Ahmedabad will soon be connected to New York, following the launch of Air India’s latest international route.

Effective 15 August 2016, the national carrier’s existing Ahmedabad-London service will be extended across the Atlantic to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The flights are now available for booking, and will be operated using Air India’s two-class Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Under the new schedule, Air India’s flights from Ahmedabad to London Heathrow will continue to Newark every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Services will depart the Indian city at 0530 and arrive in London at 1015. After a short stop, the aircraft will take off again at 1230 and arrive in Newark at 1500.

On the return leg, flights will depart Newark at 2230 every Monday and Friday and touchdown at Heathrow at 1015 the next morning. The same aircraft will then leave London at 1230 and arrive back in Ahmedabad at 0200 the following morning. On Thursdays however, the return flights will leave Newark at 0200 and arrive in Ahmedabad at 0330 the next morning, including the stop in London.

Air India first launched its Ahmedabad-London service in December 2015. The extension to New York marks the continuation of the airline’s US expansion strategy, which also included launch of direct flights between Delhi and San Francisco late last year.

The airline currently flies direct between Newark and Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

“United’s proposed service will connect two centres of global commerce and culture with Tokyo’s close-in airport and offer customers more options for travel between the US and Japan,” said Steve Morrissey, United’s vice president of regulatory & policy.

And United has also submitted an application with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to continue its existing daily direct flights between San Francisco and Haneda.

“More than 150,000 customers from large and small communities across the US have benefitted from United’s San Francisco-Haneda service. We hope the DOT reaffirms its earlier decision that this route provides numerous consumer and competitive benefits,” Morrissey stated.

In addition, Hawaiian Airlines has applied to the DOT for permission to fly between Kona and Haneda. This would mark the airline’s second route to the Japanese airport, following its existing Honolulu-Haneda service.

United currently operates direct flights to Tokyo from seven mainland US hubs, with flights to Narita from Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington DC, and the service connecting Haneda with San Francisco.

Air China will expand its US network this month with the launch of flights to New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport.

The new route will commence on 26 October 2015, operating four times a week.

Flights will depart Beijing every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 0935 and arrive at Newark Airport at 1105. The return service then leaves at 1325 on the same days of the week, and arrives back in Beijing at 1455 the following day.

Air China will serve the route using its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which comes equipped with fully flat beds in first and business classes, plus a central bar area for premium passengers, and in-seat power outlets seats and in-flight entertainment in all cabins.

The Newark service will complement Air China’s existing daily flights to New York’s JFK Airport.

This marks the latest part of the airline’s US expansion strategy; earlier this year Air China upgraded its JFK service to a new B747-8 Intercontinental aircraft, and launched a third daily flight on its Beijing-Los Angeles route.

Newark will become Air China’s seventh US port-of-call, following JFK, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and Honolulu.
