OAG, the leading data platform for the global travel industry, today revealed its 2023 Busiest Routes in the world. The analysis is powered by OAG’s Global Airline Schedules Data and provides an overview of route performance and trends, both internationally and domestically.

Once again Asia-Pacific has the busiest routes in the world, claiming 7 of the Top 10 global international and 9 global domestic routes. The busiest global international route is Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore Changi (SIN) with 4.9 million seats. Cairo (CAI) to Jeddah (JED) is #2 with 4.8 million seats, up from 3.4 million in 2019.

London Heathrow (LHR) is the #4 Busiest Global Airport in the world this year with 49,370,859 seats. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) ranks #1 and Dubai International Airport (DXB) ranks #2.

Of the busiest domestic routes, Beijing (PEK) to Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) is #1 in China and Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG) is the busiest in the U.S.

“Asia continues to have the busiest routes in the world due to its popularity as a tourism hotspot,” said John Grant, chief analyst at OAG. “Although capacity is not back to 2019 levels, London Heathrow remains a pivotal hub for global air travel.”

Travel data platform OAG has released Megahubs 2023, the market’s definitive ranking of the Top 50  most internationally connected airports in the world.

The Global Top 20 Megahubs includes seven airports in Asia Pacific. Most connected of these is Kuala Lumpur (KUL) moving up to #4 from outside the Top 10 in 2019, followed by Tokyo’s  Haneda (HND) ranking at #5.

Five of the region’s Top 10 Megahubs are located in Southeast Asia, including Bangkok (BKK) at #4, Singapore (SIN) at #5, Manila (MNL) at #6 and Jakarta (CGK) at #7 with AirAsia operating 34% of flights at the region’s top hub, Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

Among the Top 25 Low-Cost Megahubs, Asia Pacific dominates the rankings with 13 airports.  South Asia has the highest share of capacity operated by low-cost carriers (LCCs) of any region at 63%, followed by Southeast Asia with 53%. Kuala Lumpur (KUL) ranks #1 with 11,188  possible low-cost connections across over 100 destinations.

“The resurgence of Asia Pacific airports reflects their key position as hubs for some of the world’s busiest routes, like the air corridor between Fukuoka and Tokyo Haneda, which has become the third busiest in the world,” said Mayur Patel, Head of Asia Pacific, OAG. “The  remarkable ascent of these airports attests to the strategic significance of the Asia Pacific  region.”

According to research conducted by OAG, a company specialising in aviation analytics on a global scale, Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, was one of the most punctual carriers in the Middle East and the world during the busiest summer travel period.

Etihad has earned an on-time arrival performance rating of 83% or better within 15 minutes since April.

Since April 2022, OAG has rated Etihad as one of the few airlines in the Middle East that routinely achieves an 80% on-time arrival performance and has one of the lowest cancellation rates in the world.

“Etihad’s solid performance throughout an extraordinarily hard summer illustrates our steadfast dedication to delivering our flight schedule on time and offering a high-quality end-to-end experience to our guests,” said Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad’s Chief Operating Officer.

Etihad Airways continually seeks ways to improve operational efficiency and service by utilising cutting-edge technology and always putting our customers first. Our flight and ground operations staff work tirelessly to ensure that every Etihad Airways flight is safe, timely, and dependable, and our on-time success is a result of their efforts.”

OAG defines on-time performance as a flight arriving within 15 minutes of its planned time, a standard metric in the airline industry that considers various factors that might impact operations.

The post Here’s why India’s aviation sector is something to watch out for appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

India’s aviation sector is a treasure chest. The huge continent and second most populous country in the world, India is set to be a minefield of opportunities for airlines. Its outbound tourism market is one of the most sought-after markets of many countries.

With more and more travel restrictions being lifted and the resumption of all regular international flights in India, OAG believes the sector is teeming with potential in the coming years. Here’s why…

Most populated country by 2024

With the Chinese birth fertility rates in decline in the coming years, demographers predicted that India with its much higher fertility rate will overtake China as the world’s most populous country by 2023 or 2024, according to the UN’s 2021 World Population data. India’s population in 2021 is estimated to be 1.39 billion. This population boom poses advantages for airlines as it means more potential customers for both domestic and international routes.

Air travel is an integral part of travelling around India

With a landmass of 1.2 million square miles, air travel is an integral part of travelling around India, and significant emphasis has been placed on improving domestic connectivity in the last 5 years, with the introduction of India’s UDAN, or Regional Connectivity scheme.  The aim of the scheme was to make travel accessible to the masses by developing existing and new airports and supporting routes which facilitate regional connectivity.

Before the pandemic, in the period 2016-2019, domestic capacity in India grew at a faster rate than in the preceding years, averaging 16% growth each year. Although growth slowed a bit in 2019 just over one-third of capacity growth between 2016 and 2019 in India’s domestic market came from new routes that were not previously operating.

Regional airports are booming

The smallest airports in India have seen rapid growth in capacity and frequency. The very largest airports in India, those with over 10m seats in 2017, saw capacity fall by 13% in the period 2018-2021 whilst Tier 4 and 5 airports (operating up to 0.5m seats annually) saw very strong growth.

OAG’s capacity data also shows that there are 24 domestic routes operating in March 2022 to and from Delhi that were not operating before 2017, so from this perspective at least the scheme has generated some positive results for smaller airports in India and improved connectivity with a major hub airport.

One of the challenges of India’s aviation sector is improving the infrastructure of these regional airports to match the increasing passenger capacity as well as utilising some of these airports to bring in more tourists as part of the region’s tourism plans.

Indians love travelling overseas

Indians travel all over the world. It is one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets in the world. There has been a 500% rise in outbound travellers and India’s outbound tourism market is estimated to reach USD9 billion by 2025. Europe commands about 20 % of all Indian outbound departures.

However, India’s outbound international traffic is connected via one-stop services through the Middle East. In 2019, there were 0.45m passengers who travelled to the United Kingdom via the UAE from India, and the market between India and Japan was 365,000 passengers, with 65% of these travelling indirectly, via a range of Asian hub airports. Direct international services represent an opportunity to be explored in India’s aviation sector.

OAG is the leading data platform for the global travel industry providing frictionless access to high-quality travel. It has the world’s largest network of flight information, covering the whole journey from planning to customer experience. Our data share the why, where, when, and how we fly and travel.

Customers include search engines, metasearch, tech start-ups, travel booking sites, hospitality and leisure, international government organisations, global financial institutions, airlines, airports, and travel operators.

Natalie Seatter, Chief Product Officer, OAG

As we enter a new era post-COVID, travel companies now focus on recovery looking for tech solutions to recapture the market.

OAG has a long and rich history. Founded in 1929, it has gone through various degrees of evolution and success to become the tech-driven data business it is today. Its main focus is using its expertise to drive data quality and enable technology to deliver better solutions for its customers.

TD has spoken with Natalie Seatter, chief product officer at OAG, about the company’s latest technology solution and how data can help in travel recovery. Natalie is passionate about customer-driven development and building products that help their customers solve their problems and achieve their business goals.

Travel Daily (TD): Can you tell us the changes adapted by OAG? What is the problem that the company is trying to solve?

Natalie Seatter (NS): We collect the world’s flight information and transform it into valuable intelligence for the travel ecosystem. Our customers are online travel agencies, meta-search engines, mainstream tech companies, travel app providers, hospitality partners and anyone who directs, innovates or consults in the industry – including financial companies, investors, infrastructure players, start-ups and local and federal government agencies.

The challenges our customers were facing during COVID gave us the impetus we needed to accelerate our own digital transformation so we could help them manage the uncertainty. For example, flight changes and cancellations were occurring at record paces during the pandemic. Customers were downloading OAG files daily and manually comparing them to the previous days’ schedules to see what changed. The process took hours and it was slow and inefficient for everyone.

This is why we embarked on an ambitious and continuous tech transformation journey at OAG to help our customers navigate pandemic volatility and fuel a smart recovery with the intelligence they need to make go-forward decisions.

In the last 18 months, we’ve partnered with some of the most notable technology vendors – like Microsoft and Snowflake – to both accelerate product innovation internally and to equip our customers to act quickly and make better decisions. As part of this transformation, we’ve launched OAG Metis, which is an open platform that enables us to handle 0.5 million schedules updates and 5-7 million status updates daily. The data changes every day, so it is our goal to maintain and improve the freshness, accessibility, scalability, value and elasticity of our data.

TD: Speaking of OAG Metis, what is the role of data science in your products?

NS: It is very important to our team that we are equipping our customers with the most accurate and scalable data to help fuel their recovery post-pandemic. This is why we partnered with Snowflake to completely transform the freshness and value of our data by creating direct connections in the cloud.

The partnership resulted in our OAG Metis platform, which allows our team to derive better, richer insights for our customers by giving them a new way to consume and analyse data so they can make better decisions. Having all of our data available in a single technology platform means we have a single source of truth for our customers – one that is scalable, accessible via the cloud, and configurable and elastic. This allows our data science team to explore, experiment, test, and train in a way that we couldn’t do before. In essence, we’re improving the layers of data to help our customers understand what solutions they will need to not only recover right now post-COVID but also survive any future disruptions.

Our data science team knows we can’t stand still for a moment, so we’re always keeping one eye on the future and looking to change for the better. We are actively working on derived and proprietary models such as emissions data, cargo data and forward-looking schedules data. All of which when ready will be available across our APIs and Direct Solutions.

TD: What is the greatest challenge in developing/innovating products? How do you overcome this challenge?

NS: I’ve heard several people in the industry refer to OAG as “the 90-year-old start-up”, which sounds like an oxymoron but actually very much has been the case over the last 18 months.

Like most organisations, we’re never short of ideas, but the challenge is always ensuring that you invest in the right ones. To do this, you need a robust prioritisation process that the whole organisation buys into and understands.

We’ve made a real shift at OAG to developing hypotheses, running experiments and performing rapid market testing to understand whether a “great idea” is going to actually deliver value for our customers before we productise and invest in it. So it’s the voice of the customer and the customer data and feedback that drives our development roadmap instead of personal or departmental ego.

Moving to this process enables us to make products and investment decisions with confidence and at speed. We’ve got to a place where we’re much more comfortable in killing initiatives quickly so that we can move straight onto the next one!

Achieving all of this requires a significant amount of organisational transformation, starting at the C-level to ensure the executive team is aligned on the changes and the benefits that they will deliver. A big part of our role in Product is ensuring that the whole business understands the new products: what we are building, why, who it is for, how we will market it, how we will sell and price it, etc. In the last 6 months, we have created cross-organisational product squads to achieve this since keeping everyone and everything synced when working at warp speed and intensity is a significant challenge in itself.

Travellers are taking to the skies again, but the immediate future of air travel remains highly turbulent, according to OAG’s survey of 1,800-plus US travellers in July and August. Domestic capacity in the US is up 81% from June – August 2021, compared to the same period last year. The increase is being fuelled by strong consumer demand; 70% of consumers surveyed by OAG have booked flights for the future.

While travellers’ willingness to fly is increasing, the Delta variant, increased COVID transmission rates and vaccination preferences weigh heavily on the near and mid-term outlook. The large majority of consumers surveyed by OAG report being fully vaccinated. However, OAG found that only 15% of non-vaccinated individuals plan to get vaccinated before their next trip.

Many airlines and destinations are considering vaccine mandates to strengthen confidence and fight transmission. Sixty-eight percent of all survey respondents said they are interested in or want domestic vaccine passports, and 70% believe vaccine passports should be required for international travel. Alarmingly, of those that said they were not yet vaccinated, 56% said they still wouldn’t get vaccinated even if the airline, airport, or destination required it to travel.

“Vaccine mandates are a polarizing issue. Many airlines, governments and destinations are actively considering mandating vaccines to fly or enter, and the majority of travellers support the use of vaccine passports,” said Mayur Patel, head of APAC in OAG. “While this may add fuel to hot fire, the ongoing strength and resilience of the entire travel market is directly linked to higher vaccination levels and lower transmission rates.”

Other takeaways from OAG’s research include:

  • Continued COVID-19 concerns keep some travellers grounded. Of the 30% of respondents who haven’t booked flights yet, 40% are waiting for vaccination rates and regulations to improve and 30% are waiting for vaccine passports to be required.

The business travel outlook remains cloudy. Only 62% of business travellers said their company is planning air travel in the next 12 months, while 38% said their company either has no plans (20%) or has not specified plans (18%).

Holiday travel expected to bounce back. The 2021 holiday travel season projects to be a lot stronger than 2020. Of the 38% of travellers surveyed by OAG that said they typically fly for the holidays, only 40% of this group did so in 2020. This year, the percentage of that group who do intend to fly more than doubled (85%). Planned capacity for Thanksgiving week tells a similar story, currently with 47% more domestic seats booked than last year.

Booking behaviour remains erratic. Nearly half of travellers surveyed are still booking on short notice (between two weeks to a month in advance), and half are booking between two-six-plus months out. Eighty-eight percent expect ticket prices to rise in the next 12 months.

Flights from Dubai to London – which have been part of the UK/UAE travel corridor – have been named the busiest international air route in the world. This was revealed by the Arabian business and aviation analytics firm OAG.

According to OAG, a total of 190,365 seats were scheduled in the first week of 2021 on the route, putting it ahead of Cairo to Jeddah (154,337) and Orlando to San Juan (151.916).

OAG said the busy route was credited to the UK’s decision to remove the UAE from its quarantine list last month, prompting travellers and tourists to book tickets to Dubai.

However, it’s not all good news for British tourists looking to book tickets for the emirate. The threat of an ongoing lockdown period in the UK – which seems likely to continue until March – will probably put a dampen on seat availability and price.

During the lockdown period, which is likely to continue until at least March, only essential trips are permitted, including travelling abroad. Holidays are currently off-limits for most Britons, and the new restrictions will entail wider travel curbs.

OAG has released The COVID-19 Recovery: Getting Passengers Back on Board, a new report on traveller confidence based on a global survey of over 4,000 users of its flightview travel app. Overall, fear levels over catching COVID-19 while flying are tepid, and most consumers are open to air travel.

Key findings include:

  • Sixty-nine percent intend to fly internationally within the next six months, while 79% have plans for domestic air travel.
  • The eagerness to travel is more apparent among millennials and Gen-Z. Both generations are less apt to make travel adjustments and more eager to travel domestically compared to their worldwide counterparts.
  • Nearly one-third have not and do not intend to change their travel habits.
  • Seventy-six percent of travelers agreed mask mandates are the most effective safety measure airlines and airports can implement, followed by improved cleaning procedures

“Most consumers, especially younger travellers, are prepared to fly under the right circumstances,” said John Grant, chief analyst at OAG. “The lack of fear is certainly surprising and bodes well for the market recovery. Of course, full recovery will be driven by how well we fight the pandemic globally and when travel restrictions are safely lifted.”

On a 10-point scale, more than half of consumers rate concerns over catching COVID-19 while traveling less than five, with 21% indicating no fear. Still, OAG found that sharing real-time information remains critical for building traveller confidence – even before the airport. For example, during the search and booking process, most consumers would value real-time updates and predictions around flight and hotel capacity (61%), and COVID-19 transmission rates at intended destinations (53%).

The German airline Eurowings has started punctually into the year 2020. With an on-time performance of 93% in January 2020, it was the most punctual airline in a comparison of European competitors, with a clear lead over competitors of comparable size such as Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizz Air. This is confirmed by data from the independent British data provider Official Airline Guide (OAG).

Especially at its home airports in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart, the airline was significantly more reliable than its competitors. The second largest German airline would have been even more punctual if there had been no limitations due to weather and air traffic control problems.

The airline thereby confirms a trend that has been continuing for months and has now put it at the top of the European competition. The very good performance is attributable to numerous measures with which Eurowings has been ensuring the best possible punctuality and stability in flight operations since the end of 2018.

“The satisfaction of our guests is the greatest incentive for us”, said Michael Knitter, chief operations officer at Eurowings. “As the responsible team on board and on the ground, we will continue to work hard to provide our customers with the level of quality they rightly expect from us in the long term.”

IATA’s recent passenger survey reports reveal interesting data about traveler preferences: International travel accounts for 64 percent of all airline traffic with Asia-Pacific, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern regions experiencing a rise in demand. Besides that, passengers are expecting advanced booking functionalities, including bag tracking, notifications, flight status updates, and info about leg space.

So, if you’re building an OTA, a booking app, or website, you should consider giving your customers access to as much useful information as possible and looking for tools that enable these integrations. If you’ve researched travel connectivity for a while, you might have seen our huge overview of travel APIs. However, in this article and an accompanying infographic, we’ll focus on sources for flight data and describe only flight distribution APIs.

How does airline distribution work?

Airlines, as well as other forms of transportation and hotels, are improving their distribution strategy by using global distribution systems (GDSs). Travel agents, online travel agencies, or booking platforms need access to airline data to distribute tickets among the travelers – and they receive it from a plethora of sources. The minimal data required for distribution and booking are:

  • Flights
  • Schedules
  • Fares
  • Inventory (available seats)

This information is collected and stored in a GDS, a third-party network with real-time access to such information. GDSs first appeared in 1978 and have been providing the opportunity to check the information about inventory and book seats for a particular flight. To aggregate this data, GDSs connect to an airline computer reservation system (CRS) on one side. On the other side, a GDS connects to a travel agent’s terminal, an OTA, app, or a website via API.

The three leading GDSs are Sabre, Amadeus, and Travelport. Also there are smaller regional GDSs like Travelsky (China), KIU System (Latin America), Sirena-Travel (Russia), Axess and Infini from Japan, and more.

When a travel agency or a flight search app requires a GDS connection, they need a solution to connect their software with it. For this purpose, Application Programming Interface or API exists. An API is a medium between different software products, which links them without interfering with the source code.

Besides flight APIs, there are car rental or hotel booking APIs that can be integrated into a website so that the visitors could connect to third-party services without switching between websites. Flight APIs works the same way: You can integrate them into your website or app for a fee and provide your users with the opportunity to book flights and access different flight data.

We can divide flight distribution APIs into three groups depending on their providers: GDSs, tech providers, and metasearch engines or OTAs. These providers have different business models and sets of features that we’ll discuss in the next sections of the article.

GDS APIs for full booking capabilities: Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport, and others

APIs provided by the GDSs usually charge for integration and per request, asking for commission for each booking that way made from the point of integration. Now, let’s look at these APIs and their functionality.

Amadeus APIs

Amadeus GDS is the largest distribution system that connects users to over 700 airlines for seat and cargo reservation. It also integrates with Sabre and Travelport GDSs.

Via its GDS, Amadeus provides an application for business booking Amadeus cytric Travel & Expense, an app that allows users to search and book flights via mobile, and Amadeus Air-Rail Display for real-time booking for both rail and air travel. As the world’s largest GDS, Amadeus provides a huge number of booking APIs that are available in two sets: Enterprise and Self-service.

Enterprise APIs provide all transportation types, hotels, and ancillary services reservation, as well as the payments. This set of APIs is available for production needs. Enterprise APIs work in REST/JSON and SOAP/XML formats. The flight API allows users to:

  • Find fares
  • Access flight info
  • Book ancillary services (including travel insurance)
  • Pay for tickets
  • Get utilities information
  • Receive a sales report

Also these APIs have customer profiles and queue management solutions. There also are several APIs for every type of distribution, either for booking or information retrieval – suitable only for displaying flight schedules and the lowest fares. The pricing of Enterprise APIs is available on request and depends upon client’s needs.

Self-Service APIs serve for testing and production purposes. These APIs provide access to cached information on flights, schedules, fares, hotels, and points of interest at the destination. The last feature was developed recently and displays ranked data about the places of interest. Self-Service APIs use REST/JSON messaging standards.

This set offers a limited number of free requests in a testing environment. If APIs are used in the production environment, each request is charged from approximately €0.0025 to €0.030.

Pyton Flight Portal API

The Pyton Flight Portal is a part of the Amadeus IT Group. It provides two solutions, embracing both flights and leisure reservation.

Pyton Flight Portal API/XML is a solution focused on low-cost carriers. It provides direct connections to 100+ low-cost airlines worldwide. The functions of the API are:

  • One way and round trip support
  • Various types of payments (credit and debit card, virtual payment)
  • Speed-boarding
  • Ancillary services booking (luggage, speed-boarding and airport check-in)
  • Fares and seat selection
  • Low-costs flights cached data

Pyton Leisure Portal API/XML is also available as a white label with integration to a website, call center, or a travel agency module. This API is available as a custom solution. This module has the following functionality:

  • Flight booking on regular airlines, low-cost airlines, and charters
  • Accommodation reservation (hotels, villas, cottages, apartments, and hostels)
  • Transfers and car rental of different types and classes
  • Event tickets booking
  • Package tours booking

Unlike Amadeus API, it provides no travel insurance bookings and has no scheduling functionality.

Sabre APIs

Sabre GDS gives access to 400 airlines. It provides a B2B solution via Sabre Red 360, an online travel platform for agencies, providers, and developers that allows customers to access the whole set of services to book. In 2015, Sabre bought Abacus, the leading GDS in Asia, with headquarters in Singapore. It is now owned by Sabre and eleven Asian airlines. The GDS has the largest access to data from airlines, including Chinese and low-cost, and hotels in Asia-Pacific region.

Sabre is the second largest GDS and has an API set similar to Amadeus’ without offering insurance and airport transfers. Sabre APIs use SOAP/REST messaging formats. The APIs enable data retrieval and booking. They cover:

  • Flight schedules and availability
  • Fares
  • Queue activity
  • PRN records
  • Itineraries
  • Mileage count
  • Transactions
  • Flight details
  • Ancillary booking
  • Low-fare history
  • Low-fare forecast (available in a beta version)
  • Passenger details
  • Seat map

The price of Sabre API is available on request.

Travelport API

Travelport is an international platform that unites three GDSs: Galileo, Apollo, and Worldspan. As Amadeus and Sabre, it provides the data on flights, trains, hotel, cruises, and car rental. Worldspan also distributes travel information and tour packages.

Since 2012 Travelport has cooperated with AXESS International Network, a leading Japanese GDS network, created and owned by Japanese Airlines (JAL), which uses Travelport API for flight distribution. Recently the companies announced the launch of a new joint venture company that’s expected to be formed by the June 1, 2019.

Travelport provides access to all its GDSs via a single Travelport Universal API. This API uses XML messaging format. It books flights from American, European, African, Asian, and Middle Eastern airlines. The Travelport Universal API booking functionality of covers:

  • Flights (branded fares and schedules)
  • Connected routes (air and rail)
  • Ancillary services booking

Ancillary services available for booking differ depending on airlines. but include baggage, meals, and travel insurance. Travelport charges an annual fee for Universal API use. The fee is available on request.

Mystifly API

Kiwi APIs

Czech OTA Kiwi powered the set of APIs with a direct connection to approximately 150 carriers. These APIs enable low-cost flight processing, flight data aggregation, itinerary setting, and finding and saving the cheapest routes. One more important feature of the Kiwi API is payment processing. Also this API provides an option to include baggage info in the booking. To use the Kiwi API, just join the affiliate program. The full list of Kiwi’s data includes:

  • Fare classes
  • Aircraft equipment
  • Bag limit and prices
  • Currency and currency rate
  • Return duration
  • Distance
  • Length of stopover
  • Multicity flights

momondo API

momondo is a global search site for the lowest prices in flight, hotel, and car rental. It has a non-public momondo API that integrates third-parties with the platform. The API for flight reservation provides information on:

  • Airports
  • Routes
  • Prices and currency
  • Anywhere search

To access this API, you have to become a part of their Affiliate Network programs.

Final word: What to consider before flight booking API integration?

As you have seen, most of the travel APIs are relatively similar: They technical features resemble each other, connect to the same GDSs, have the same functions, and use the same principles of data distribution. How should you pick the perfect APIs for your service? There are three factors to consider:

Scope of functionality. Do you need only schedules and fares, or do you want to give your users an extended booking opportunity? Or maybe you want to enable your users to purchase travel insurance?

Region. If you are targeting Europe, consider APIs that integrate with Amadeus GDS; if you want to reach Latin America, consider KIU GDS integration, and so on.

Business model. As a rule, direct GDS APIs charge per request – not the cheapest option. Choosing a tech provider that charges for the first connection or even gives you access to the database right away is much more preferable. And last but not least, pay attention to airlines your API connects to. If you are going to include low-cost carriers, make sure that your API integrates with them.

Airport connectivity is the overall level to which the airport is connected to the rest of the world, either by direct flights or indirect connections via other airports.

OAG, provider of digital flight information, has announced the results of its 2018 Megahubs Index, an annual ranking of the most-connected airports across the globe. London Heathrow (LHR) is hailed as the most internationally connected airport in the world with a Connectivity Index of 333 points.

In the US, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) ranks first as the most connected airport; it has ranked first for three consecutive years. While location is an important characteristic for airport connectivity, the presence of strong domestic carriers is also vital.

“Megahubs are incredibly important for the global travel ecosystem.”

John Grant, senior analyst of OAG, said: “Looking for every competitive advantage possible, airlines continue to push the boundaries on connectivity for their customers – and today, that requires a strong megahub presence.

“Megahubs are incredibly important for the global travel ecosystem. They increase efficiency, competition and choice, and most importantly, create a boundary-less world for travellers.”

The connectivity data measured by OAG goes beyond the size of an airport’s route network and measures the number of connections possible within a specific timeframe and the relative attractiveness of each airport as a connecting point for scheduled domestic air passengers.

OAG has calculated the total number of all possible domestic connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window, on the busiest day for global aviation for the 12 months until July 2018.

The Latvian airline airBaltic transported a total of 3 523 300 passengers, in 2017 — or 22% more than last year to its network spanning Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, CIS and the Middle East. It is the highest number of passengers carried in airline’s history.

Martin Gauss (main picture), chief executive officer of airBaltic: “2017 was an outstanding year. We launched 13 new destinations, introduced seven brand-new Bombardier CS300 aircraft and became the most punctual airline globally. During the second half of the year we beat our passenger records each month. Our team has done a fantastic job in making sure everything runs smoothly.”

“Now airBaltic is off to a very good start for 2018. This year we will offer our passengers an even greater choice of convenient travel opportunities with at least 8 new destinations added to our route map. We will continue the sustainable growth path and good operational results envisaged by our business plan Horizon 2021,” Gauss added.

The airline’s load factor, which represents the number of passengers as a proportion of the number of available seats, was at a level of 76% in 2017, which is a 2.0 percentage points more than in 2016. In 2017, the Latvian carrier operated a total of 50 093 flights.

The regularity of airBaltic reached 99.43% in 2017, exceeding company’s internal target. Which means that the airline operated more than 99 out of every 100 scheduled flights last year.

On January 3, 2018, it was announced that airBaltic has been ranked No 1 globally in punctuality in 2017 by OAG analysts, who tracked the performance of a total of over 50 million flight records. airBaltic has been on the top of the global on-time performance ranking for the past four consecutive years. According to OAG, airBaltic achieved a punctuality rating of 90.01% for flights linking the Baltics to its network —  meaning that more than 90 out of 100 airBaltic flights arrived on time in 2017.

Qantas and Japan Airlines achieved the best on-time performance rates of any airline in the Asia Pacific region last year, while Thai AirAsia is the region’s most punctual low-cost carrier, a new report has revealed.

According to OAG’s latest ‘Punctuality League’ report for 2016, 87.56% of Qantas flights arrived at their destination on time last year, putting it top in Asia Pacific and fourth in the world. JAL (86.74%) was Asia Pacific’s second most punctual carrier, with Singapore Airlines (85.19%) third.

Continuing the strong performance of Australia and Japan, ANA (84.71%) and Virgin Australia (84.52%) were fourth and fifth respectively.

In terms of airports, Juanda International in Surabaya surprisingly topped the Asia Pacific rankings, with an OTP rate of 90.30%. This also made it the best performing “large” airport in the world (those handling in excess of 10 million passengers per year). Osaka Itami (89.56) was second in Asia Pacific, followed by three Australian hubs: Cairns (87.23), Brisbane (86.71) and Perth (85.86).

“Whether it is a 17-hour long-haul service or a one-hour connecting flight to a hub, the accuracy of both scheduling the service and delivering the stated on-time performance is incredible; especially when compared to so many other forms of transport,” said OAG’s John Grant. “This year’s report draws upon the largest ever number of flights tracked in a single year.”

Globally, the world’s most punctual airlines in 2016 were Hawaiian Airlines (89.87%), Copa Airlines (88.75%) and KLM (87.89%), while the best performing airports were Birmingham (91.28%), Newcastle (90.94%) and Surabaya (90.30%).

Japanese airports are among the best in world for on-time performance, a new study has revealed.

According to OAG’s Punctuality League for 2015, Osaka’s Itami Airport recorded the world’s highest punctuality rate, with 93.85 of its flights arriving and departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. And Tokyo’s Haneda Airport was the top-ranked large airport, with 91.25% of its flights on time.

Other highly ranked Asia Pacific airports included Adelaide (90.18%), Perth (88.58%), Cairns (88.40%), Brisbane (88.31%), Christchurch (88.14%), Nagoya (88.11%), Auckland (88.67%), Sydney (85.20%), Melbourne (85.02%) and Singapore (84.57%)

And Japan’s airlines also performed well; JAL and ANA were the highest ranked carriers in Asia, with on-time performances of 90.44% and 89.7% respectively. Both were also ranked in the top five most punctual airlines in the world, with Latvia’s airBaltic (94.39%) taking top spot.

In the Asian league table, Oceania’s airlines also performed well, with Virgin Australia (88.56%), Qantas (88.08%) and Air New Zealand (87.33%) completing the regional top five. India’s IndiGo (84.57%) was the highest ranked Asian low-cost carrier, followed by Thai AirAsia (84.28%).

“More aircraft, more flights, new aircraft types and more passengers all place pressure on one of our most important industry metrics; on-time performance,” said OAG’s executive vice president, John Grant.

“Therefore… it is pleasing to report that overall punctuality continues to improve in many parts of the world. Investment in new technology, improved operating procedures and most importantly, the skill and professionalism of the airline and airport operators translates into the continual improvements we are reporting year-on-year.”

The world’s five most punctual airports were Osaka Itami, Brussels South Charleroi, Panama City, Tokyo Haneda and Stavanger, while the five most punctual airlines were airBaltic, Copa Airlines, Azul, JAL and ANA.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced details of a new mobile app for passengers to monitor their health and wellbeing before, during and after a flight.

Used in conjunction with a ‘Jawbone’ fitness wristband, the SkyZen app, with data and analytics supplied by OAG, enables air travellers to view their activity and sleep patterns throughout the whole flight experience.

Helpful hints will enable users to improve their travel experience and combat jet lag when crossing time zones.

“Recent advances in personal health monitoring give air travellers a great opportunity to track how they respond to the various stages of a trip. With its global perspective on the air transport industry, IATA is uniquely placed to develop a single app, which passengers can use across all flights, anywhere in the world. We are confident SkyZen delivers a completely new perspective on travel for passengers, with handy tips offering a fun and interactive way to improve the quality of their flying experience,” said Tom Windmuller, IATA senior vice president for Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security.

SkyZen is free to download and use from the Apple iTunes store, and currently works with the Jawbone health tracker. The Apple Watch and Fitbit version will be released shortly. Users of the app only need to enter their flight number, date and class of travel, and SkyZen will automatically collect and aggregate the data. Using the data collected, SkyZen will offer passengers personalised insights on their flight activity, and strategies to minimize jet lag before and after flight.

Traditional airline alliances have had their day and will not survive in the future, a new report has asserted.

In its new study, ‘The Fight for Global Markets’, aviation analysts OAG said that the next phase of the battle for global air passengers has already started, and that airlines that are focused purely on traditional alliance models could be at a significant disadvantage.

The report highlights the growth of new forms of airline cooperation, driven by carriers like Etihad Airways with its network of “equity partners”, which are now changing the industry landscape.

“Alliances are no longer the only means of international competition. Increasingly joint ventures, equity stakes and less formal partnerships are being used, all of which challenge existing structures and operations. There are currently more airlines than can realistically exist and in a truly global market where barriers were eased, we would expect to see a consolidation of carriers,” said OAG’s executive vice president of data & market intelligence, John Grant.

“The global aviation outlook is transforming and there have to be changes to the business structure, the key players and shape of the industry. Alliances are not a long-term solution – they are a fixed solution which have run their course.”

According to OAG, while airline alliances have “served a purpose”, the merits of being aligned to a few major brands will be outweighed by the need to new develop strategic partnerships. This has been highlighted in recent years by airlines like Qantas, a oneworld member which has formed partnerships with SkyTeam‘s China Eastern Airlines and unaffiliated Emirates.

OAG also highlighted the rise of low-cost carriers. The report stated that while most have the wrong fleets to develop long-haul networks, major LCCs could use joint ventures and alliances with full-service carriers to move forward.

OAG’s report concludes that China, Indonesia and Turkey could be the markets where globally dominant airlines are based in 10 years’ time.

Japan’s airlines and airports are among the most reliable in the world in terms of flight punctuality, according to a new report.

Global aviation data company, OAG, revealed that Osaka‘s Itami Airport was one of the world’s best performing airports in 2014, while Japan Airlines was Asia Pacific region’s most punctual airline.

With 93.2% of its arrivals and departures occurring within 15 minutes of scheduled time, Osaka Airport led the whole world in terms of on-time performance in the mid-sized airport category. It was also the second best performing airport in the world, with only the UK’s Bristol Airport (94.4%) achieving a better on-time performance.

JAL meanwhile, managed to ensure that 88.8% of its flights arrived on time – the best of any airline in the Asia Pacific region and the ninth best in the world. airBaltic was the world’s most punctual airline in 2014 according to OAG’s data, with 94.9% of its flights arriving on time.

Other strong performers among the Japanese aviation industry include Tokyo Haneda Airport, which was the second best large airport in the world with a punctuality rating of 87.9%, and All Nippon Airways (ANA), which was the fourth most punctual airline in Asia Pacific (87.3%).

Australian aviation also performed well, according to OAG, with Adelaide (90.5%), Perth (88.1%), Brisbane (84.4%), Sydney (84.4%) and Melbourne (82.9%) doing well in the airport category, and Virgin Australia (85.5%) and Qantas (85.4%) both ranking in the Asia Pacific top 10.

China’s largest online travel company, Ctrip, has penned a new agreement that will give it access to OAG’s database of flight information.

The three-year deal will allow Ctrip to tap into OAG’s Dynamic Schedules system, providing an exclusive data feed of flight schedules and updates from approximately 900 global airlines.

Ctrip said it would use this data to help keep its customers informed of any flight schedule changes, reducing passenger re-bookings and ultimately improving customer satisfaction.

“Ctrip only began using Dynamic Schedules this month and has already started to see how the product leads to major competitive advantages including lower processing costs, fewer passenger re-bookings and better customer service,” said Phil Callow, CEO of OAG.

“In July this year alone, for example, more than 86,000 schedules changes were supplied to OAG over a 24-hour period. Airlines have to react quickly to market demand. Passengers need to be re-booked or re-ticketed, system and online displays need to be updated, and sales agents need to know the new information.”

A Ctrip spokesperson commented that the new service “will allow us to be more competitive and efficient in order to better service our customers”.

Asia is setting new trends in long-haul low-cost air travel, and China is likely to become a key regional player in the coming years, according to a new report by aviation analysts OAG.

Titled ‘Generation X – Long-Haul Low-Cost Comes Of Age’, the analysis shows that following the launch of Asia’s first long-haul LCC, Malaysia’s AirAsia X, more budget airlines are seeking to expand their route networks to take advantage of growing traffic between Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and increasingly South Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

“The LCC sector in Asia is experiencing strong growth with massive potential demand supported by fast-growing economies and rising demand for intra-regional travel.” the OAG report stated.

“Although low-cost air travel originated in Europe and North America to connect destinations typically within four hours’ flying time, Asian LCCs are adapting the model for locations up to eight hours apart. This enables cost-conscious Asian travellers to fly to new destinations for which flights were either previously unavailable or were priced too high.”

AirAsia X has since been joined in the market by Jetstar, Scoot and Thai AirAsia X, a new Bangkok-based subsidiary. Broadly speaking, these carriers are connecting regional destinations in Northeast Asia and Australia from their Southeast Asian homes. Cebu Pacific and PAL Express are also serving the Philippines-Middle East sectors.

In the near future, Cebu Pacific will launch services to Australia, while Scoot is preparing to launch a Bangkok-based joint venture with Nok Air. OAG also predicts the launch of AirAsia X in Indonesia.

But looking at the future potential of this market, the report found that China could hold the key. Analysing the region’s top 20 country pairs in terms of seat capacity growth between June 2010 and June 2014, China was found to feature in eight of the fastest growing markets. There was double-digit growth on routes connecting China with both Australia (+11%) and Thailand (+20%). Here, existing LCCs like Spring Airlines could thrive, alongside a multitude of new market entrants.

Jetstar's Dreamliner at Bali airport, following a flight from Australia

China’s aviation authorities recently abolished the minimum pricing requirement for airlines, and introduced new measures designed to encourage the development of Chines LCCs. This has led to the formation of many new carriers, including Guangzhou-based 9 Air and Hangzhou’s Zhejiang Loong Airlines.

“Given the potential impact of the recent changes made by the Civil Aviation Administration of China to the rules governing the establishment and operation of LCCs, the opportunities are now available for a major Chinese low-cost carrier to emerge or for a major Chinese carrier to make a play for regional markets,” said Mark Clarkson, OAG’s business development director for Asia Pacific.

And there is room for further growth, with only three routes from China – Shanghai-Singapore (ranked fifth), Bangkok-Shanghai (19th), and Beijing-Singapore (23rd) – listed in OAG’s top 25 low-cost, long-haul routes in Asia Pacific.

The top international routes are Bangkok-Seoul, Singapore-Sydney, Singapore-Taipei, Hong Kong-Tokyo, Seoul-Singapore, Melbourne-Singapore and Bangkok-Tokyo.

Qantas’ recent alliances with Emirates and China Southern Airlines could provide the key to securing the airline’s future, according to aviation analysts OAG.

The ‘Flying Kangaroo’ unveiled a major cost-cutting programme last month, as its braces for an expected AU$250-300 million (US$224-269m) half-year loss. But according to OAG, Qantas could have already secured its future by embarking on a series of new alliances that it says “may prove strategically sound”.

Qantas formed a major partnership with Emirates last year
Qantas formed a major partnership with Emirates last year

Qantas and Jetstar currently account for 61% of Australia’s domestic market share, compared to Virgin Australia’s 35%, and 24% of international seat capacity, compared to 8% for Virgin Australia.

But this lead masks the fact that Qantas’ international capacity has remained flat over the last five years, while Virgin Australia has increased 84%.

In addition, Qantas’ share of the Australia-Asia market has fallen to just 11%, with the airline having been overtaken by China Southern Airlines (21%). All of which means that Qantas’ recent partnerships with China Southern and Emirates (which now holds a 10% share of Australia’s international market) could be crucial to ensuring the airline’s future competitiveness.

“Although the outlook seems challenging for Qantas at the start of 2014, its new relationships with Emirates and China Southern may prove to be strategically sound moves and provide a much needed shake-up of the Qantas-Asia network,” said John Grant, executive vice president of OAG.

“Given the evidence and the rapid growth of foreign carriers in Australia, it is understandable that Qantas have asked the Australian government to relax foreign investment rules in the company,” he added.

Last month, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce described the Australian international market as “the toughest anywhere in the world”.

“Since early 2012, there has also been an unprecedented distortion of the Australian domestic market, with Virgin Australia’s strategy to seek majority ownership and massive financial backing from foreign government-owned airlines,” Joyce complained. “This foreign government capital has been used to finance dramatic increases in domestic capacity, with profound implications for the future of Australia’s aviation industry.”

Virgin Australia is now part-owned by Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand, and Qantas is urging the Australian government to increase the maximum stake an international airline is able to own in Qantas from the current 35%.

Howard Davies will launch his interim report next week

OAG Aviation has compared the UK airport system to four others in the country ahead of Howard Davies releasing his interim report into airport capacity later this month.

Based on how air traffic comes into New York, Paris, Tokyo and Moscow, OAG’s research suggests Davies’ proposals could focus on a system that would continue to see the majority of traffic come from three airports, with one (Heathrow) holding the most international flights.

While there are six airports currently under the London name (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City and Southend), OAG pointed out three carry 90% of the capital’s traffic.

This is similar to three of the four previously- mentioned cities, which also run with three major airports.

London, Tokyo and Paris all have a dominant airport in Heathrow, Haneda and Charles de Gaulle, while New York and Moscow’s capacity is split more evenly. All the ‘second’ airports in all the cities still had significant traffic levels of 30-45 million passengers. Stansted could also creep up on these if its turnaround plans come to fruition.

London remains the capital of low-cost travel taking up a third of its flights.

It also has the largest international capacity of the cities’ five top airports with 128 million seats and dominates the city’s international traffic at 69%.

While the report did not indicate which way forward would be best for London’s airport capacity, it does show that others have run with one airport that dominates international traffic while also serving from other airports.

The Asia Pacific could be home to five of the world’s 10 busiest airports by 2016, a new report has forecast.

According to the latest Global Market Analysis Report from OAG, available air seat capacity at airports in the region is set to surge over the coming years. OAG noted that at present only two of the world’s 10 busiest airports, in terms of seat capacity, are located in the Asia Pacific – Beijing Capital (second, 9.38 million seats) and Tokyo Haneda (fourth, 7.88m). Dubai International, which is bracketed in the Middle East region, is seventh (7.35m).

But by 2016, OAG predicts there will be five Asia Pacific airports in the top 10, with Beijing taking over from Atlanta as the world’s busiest hub. The Chinese capital is forecast to experience capacity growth of 3%, to 10.40m available seats, by 2016, overtaking Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport, which is projected to grow 1% to 10.18m. Dubai is expected to surge 11% into third place, with 10.02m seats.

Other Asian airports are also set for strong growth, according to OAG. Capacity at Jakarta’s Soekharno-Hatta airport is expected to jump 13% to 9.07m seats, catapulting the Indonesian hub into fifth place, ahead of London Heathrow (+1% to 8.54). Singapore Changi (+8% to 7.92m) and Hong Kong International (+5% to 7.56m) airports will also enter the top 10, in ninth and 10th places respectively.

Asia’s projected gains will be principally at the expense of the US, which will see its share of the global top 10 slip from four to two airports. Europe is expected to see a smaller reduction, from three to two airports, thanks to the rise of Istanbul, which is forecast to surge 18% to become the world’s fourth-busiest airport (9.82m).

“We know the balance of economic power is shifting eastwards, but our three-year projection shows how dramatically Asian air transport is growing. This month, Atlanta still has a lead over Beijing of 465,000 seats, but by 2016 Beijing will have surged ahead,” commented John Grant, executive vice president of OAG.

“Furthermore, we expect to see new entrants Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong push out established leaders Chicago, Dallas, Frankfurt and Paris Charles de Gaulle. Europe’s blushes will be spared only by the extraordinary rise of Istanbul.”

The total available seat capacity at the world’s 10 busiest airports will increase almost 16% by 2016.

The Middle East will see strongest growth of any global region in available long-haul airline seats in September, adding 22,000 extra seats per day, according to latest statistics from OAG. The FACTS (Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics) report for September 2012 reveals an expected 5% growth in available seats to and from the Middle East, compared to September 2011, with 13.1 million anticipated in the month. Meanwhile, flight operations to and from the region are expected to increase by 4% to 59,771.

Rob Shaw, Director of Analytics at OAG, said: “Dubai is expected to lead all major global hubs in September in terms of growth, with an 8% increase in flights and a 12% increase in seats, a disparity partly reflecting Emirates’ adoption of the Airbus A380. However, Abu Dhabi is enjoying the fruits of its own expansion strategy and will remain the fastest growing hub in the Middle East, with a 16% increase in seat capacity to 1,661,512 compared to September 2011. Doha and Riyadh will also see strong growth in seat capacity of 10% and 5% respectively.”

“The Middle East remains at the vanguard of long-haul air traffic growth globally. While this expansion in part reflects the ambitious growth targets of the ‘superconnector’ airlines – Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways – airport infrastructure investments across the region continue to make the Middle East attractive to other long-haul carriers,” he adds.

A new online product by OAG is planning to ease the travel chaos caused by major flight disruptions.

In the wake of recent problems caused by volcanic ash clouds, snow, strikes and operating problems, OAG has developed ‘Migo’, which aims to offer instant notifications to passengers in the event of disruption.

Intended for operational teams at airports, travel management companies and travel agents, the new tool highlights airport disruption via a traffic light system superimposed on a map. Pop-up ‘further information’ boxes explain the cause and extent of the disruption, while subsequent search screens deliver alternative routings to any passengers’ destination. These alternatives include a range of train schedules and road directions which can be printed or emailed to the traveller.

“Travellers generally recognise that severe weather and extraordinary events like the ash cloud are going to have a significant impact on flights,” said OAG’s Product Director, Emma Swinnerton. “The real frustration comes when they encounter huge difficulty in finding alternative ways to get to where they want to go and the understandable inability of airport and airline staff to give all the options.

“For the first time, Migo delivers all those answers in one easy-to-use, instantly accessible package and which will provide those companies with a real customer service advantage. They will quickly, easily and reliably be able to re-route and re-book travellers and get them round whatever the problem may be,” she added.

The patent for Migo is still pending, but OAG is intending to roll it out for PCs, tablets and iPads.

Amadeus is now being provided with a daily transmission of schedule data files by OAG, which is then used globally by Amadeus-served travel management companies, travel websites, and agencies.

John Grant, EVP networks of UBM Aviation, parent company of OAG said: “This enables travel agents and their customers to access more accurate information when looking to book a flight.”

The OAG database contains schedules for over 1,000 airlines and over 4,000 airports. The database tracks over 28 million departures a year ahead. This data is updated continuously, and OAG processes up to 50,000 airline schedule-change messages per day.

“Airlines change their flight schedules to enhance margins, meet market demand, and seize competitive advantage and it is key that this information is made available quickly to travel agencies,” said David Doctor, director distribution marketing, Amadeus.

Airlines can also update their schedules directly in the Amadeus system.

“Amadeus is the first global distribution system to use a daily OAG schedule feed,” said John Grant, Executive Vice President of Networks for UBM Aviation, parent company of OAG. “This enables travel agents and their customers to access more accurate information when they’re looking to book a flight – a major competitive advantage for any global distribution system.”

The OAG database contains schedules for more than 1,000 airlines and in excess of 4,000 airports, tracking more than 28 million departures a year ahead. This data is updated continuously, with OAG processing up to 50,000 airline schedule-change messages per day.

“Airlines change their flight schedules to enhance margins, meet market demand, and seize competitive advantage and it is key that this information is made available quickly to travel agencies,” said David Doctor, Director Distribution Marketing at Amadeus. “With this new agreement, we can ensure that, for airlines which file their information in OAG, schedule changes are processed and new flights proposed for sale, immediately on the day.”

Approximately one third of the flight schedules in the Amadeus system are based on OAG’s data. Airlines can also update their schedules directly in the Amadeus system.
