Finnair has revealed its European schedule for the coming summer, including a range of new routes. The Finnish carrier will launch three weekly flights to the Norwegian gateway of Bodø for the first time, expanding its connectivity across the Nordic region.

Complementing existing services to Milan Malpensa, services to Italy will also get a boost, with the addition of flights to Milan’s most convenient airport – Milan Linate. Services will be relaunched to the popular Slovenian city of Ljubljana, for those looking to experience some of Europe’s most dramatic scenery.

Summer 2023 will see Finnair fly to more than 50 destinations across Europe, with additional frequencies added to popular European cities, such as Berlin, Copenhagen, Vilnius and Riga. Ole Orvér, Finnair chief commercial officer, said: “Travel has recovered at a good pace so we are increasing flights to popular destinations across Europe for leisure and business travellers.

“We also rescheduled a number of services – both long and short-haul – to ensure seamless connectivity for our flights to Japan to meet the increase in demand from Asia.” Next summer, the Nordic carrier will offer long-haul connections to Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda, Osaka, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, Delhi, Mumbai, Doha, Tel Aviv, Dallas, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles and New York.

Closer to home, Finnair operates direct flights from Helsinki to London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and the Irish capital Dublin, allowing customers to connect onto scores of popular destinations. Finnair and Sabre have announced a new global distribution partnership.

Under the new agreement, Sabre will resume distributing competitive global Finnair content to hundreds of thousands of travel agents and thousands of corporations worldwide through its travel marketplace.

“Travel agents continue to play a key role in the travel industry”

“We are delighted to promote our products and services through Sabre’s extraordinary network of travel agents worldwide as we rebuild our network and operations following the COVID-19 pandemic”, said Ole Orvér, chief commercial officer, Finnair. “Travel agents continue to play a key role in the travel industry value chain and, together with Sabre, we will work to deliver the benefits of NDC technology. Ultimately, travel agents and their customers will enjoy more relevant and comprehensive travel solutions.

“Consumers want the best offers”

“As we ramp up our operations globally, it is imperative that customers have choice and flexibility in booking through their preferred direct or indirect channel. Travel agents contribute significantly to helping people regain the confidence to travel, which is absolutely essential for our industry. We truly value the commitment of our travel agency partners and are happy that we can connect to them through Sabre’s marketplace.”

Sabre plays an important role in facilitating the marketing and sale of airfares, hotel rooms, rental cars, rail tickets and other types of travel to hundreds of thousands of travel agents and thousands of corporations and online travel agencies (OTAs) who use it to shop, book and manage travel. It is one of the world’s largest marketplaces, processing over USD120 billion in estimated travel spend.

“We are fortunate to enter this unprecedented period with new opportunities that will drive incremental revenue for both agencies and airlines”, said Wade Jones, president, Sabre Travel Network. “Consumers want the best offers, agencies want to present the most relevant content to their customers, and airlines want to distribute their fares and products so that travellers can access them wherever they choose to shop. Sabre remains committed to helping all parties achieve their goals. We are confident that our content serves the needs of travel agents in a truly optimal way.”

Piia Karhu, senior vice president of customer experience, and a member of the Finnair executive board, will leave the company on 30 June 2020 as she has been appointed senior vice president of business development at future Metso Outotec.

Her nomination becomes effective after the closing of the partial demerger of Metso and the combination of Metso’s Minerals business and Outotec.

“The seven years I have spent at Finnair have been rewarding and I have learned a lot. During this time Finnair has grown a great deal, we have opened new routes to Asia, taken into use A350 fleet to serve our customers, the Helsinki Airport has transformed, our travel service provider Aurinkomatkat has become the market leader in Finland, we have developed our digital channels and our customer experience has further improved. I feel that now it is time for a new personal challenge, and I know that I can apply many of my learnings at Finnair also in my new position,” said Karhu.

Finnair’s customer experience unit will be organised so that the operative parts of the unit transfer to its operations unit, which is led by Jaakko Schildt, and the travel service provider Aurinkomatkat, the contact centres and the customer service development functions will become a part of Finnair’s commercial unit, headed by Ole Orvér. The commercial unit will be renamed as commercial and customer experience (CX) unit. These organisational changes take effect as of 1 June 2020.

Finnair will start flying again from Heathrow and Manchester in July, gradually adding frequencies and routes back to its global network, as the Nordic airline returns to service. The Finnish flag-carrier will review its schedule on a monthly basis and update it as travel restrictions are eased and demand starts to recover.

From July, the airline will resume services with a double-daily service from Heathrow, rising up to three times a day in August and September then to four times a day in October. Meanwhile, services from Manchester will resume with four flights a week in July, ramping up to a daily service for customers to Helsinki in September.

Ole Orvér, Finnair’s chief commercial officer, said: “We expect aviation to recover gradually, starting in July. Our intention is to operate approximately 30% of our normal flights in July, and we will also start long-haul flights to our key Asian destinations. We will then add routes and frequencies month by month as demand recovers. Our recent customer survey shows that customers are already planning both business and leisure trips. We want to meet this demand with our network offering.”

The move will see the airline significantly ramping up its passenger operations, following a prolonged period of focusing on the demand for cargo flights, transporting critical supplies around the world as part of the Covid-19 relief effort.

Finnair and Shanghai-based Juneyao Air have signed a Letter of Intent to deepen their cooperation between China and Europe subject to required regulatory approvals. The aim is to establish a joint venture on the Helsinki–Shanghai route.

This will enable both the airlines to offer their corporate and leisure customers a seamless travel experience through a wider choice of destination, schedule and fare options via their main hubs, Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Pudong International Airport (PVG).

“Taking the important step to evolve this into a deeper cooperation focused on our Shanghai and Helsinki hubs will allow us to not only serve our current customers even better, but also to lay a platform for further growth in the future, once the aviation market starts to normalise,” said Ole Orver, chief commercial officer at Finnair.

“The aviation industry has encountered tough situations. Nevertheless, we consistently and optimistically trust in our emphasised China-Europe market and partnership with Finnair. Expanding the partnership enables us to accelerate further development and to serve passengers better with diversified choices and broadened network coverage,” said Yu Chengji, executive vice president of Juneyao Air.

Finnair has unveiled its latest flight today, connecting Europe to South Korea. From next year the Nordic carrier will be the first airline to operate direct flights between Europe and bustling Busan when the new three-times a week service starts.

The new gateway to southern South Korea will offer super smooth connections to Finnair’s 100 destinations across Europe, via its Helsinki hub. On 30 March 2020, Busan’s Gimhae International Airport will, for the first time, welcome Finnair customers travelling on the airline’s state-of-the-art Airbus A350 aircraft.

Ole Orvér, Finnair’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are excited to be the first European airline operating to Busan, which is a wonderful addition to our Asian network. Korea is one of our top markets globally, and we have been operating to Seoul for 11 years. We are delighted to be able to offer a new destination to our customers in Korea and to continue growing sustainably in Asia.”

The launch of Finnair’s twentieth Asian destination in 2020 is the result of the airline’s expansion programme to grow traffic between Europe and the Far East and Asia. Busan will be the Finnish carrier’s second destination in South Korea, following the popular Helsinki to Seoul route which launched 11 years ago.

The carrier’s eco-efficient A350s will operate the route, offering long-haul customers unparalleled levels of comfort in spacious cabins, featuring the carrier’s famed Nordic flair and contemporary style.

Finnair flies up to seven times daily from London Heathrow to Helsinki, twice daily from Manchester and up to twice a day from Edinburgh. Passengers can enjoy quick and convenient connections in Helsinki, from as little as 35 minutes, to scores of destinations across Asia and the Far East.
