The Philippine island of Palawan is now able to welcome more visitors, following the expansion of Puerto Princesa International Airport – the island’s main gateway.

Opened on 4 May 2017, the hub now features an extended 2,600-metre-long runway capable of handling twin-aisle aircraft, plus a larger terminal building covering 13,000m². There is also a new car park, cargo building, apron, taxiways, aircraft parking bays and navigation facilities.

The PHP4.4 billion (US$88 million) upgrade will increase the airport’s capacity to approximately 1.9 million passengers per year.

Demand for flights to Palawan has increased in recent years and Puerto Princesa International Airport is now served by five carriers: Air Juan, Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, PAL Express and AirAsia Philippines. In 2016, the airport welcomed its first international flight when Philippine Airlines launched a new direct service to Taipei.

Cebu Pacific, which connects the Palawan hub with Cebu, Iloilo, Manila, welcomed the creation of a “world class airport in Puerto Princesa”.

“This is expected to boost trade and tourism even more in the Palawan region. We are positive that with this expansion, we will be able to help achieve the government’s goal of increasing tourist arrivals to Palawan. With the new airport able to handle international flights, it now makes Puerto Princesa attractive for direct connections to and from key foreign tourist markets,” said Atty JR Mantaring, Cebu Pacific’s vice president for corporate affairs.

The airstrip at Puerto Princesa was originally created in World War II and it later served as a US air force base. It opened as a commercial airport in the 1980s.

Attracting more than one million visitors per year, Palawan is home to numerous tourist attractions including tropical beaches, scuba diving and snorkelling sites, and the UNESCO-listed Puerto Princesa Underground River.

Philippine Airlines is ramping up its operations at Clark International Airport, north of Manila.

The national carrier is aiming to ease pressure at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport by launching new services connecting Clark with Cebu, Davao and Puerto Princesa. Clark is located approximately 80km from the Philippine capital.

Having launched flights between Clark and Boracay in late 2016, PAL will launch four weekly Clark-Cebu flights and three weekly Clark-Davao services on 30 January 2017. Then on 26 March PAL will start offering three weekly flights between Clark and Puerto Princesa, on the island of Palawan.

“We aim to cater to the flight needs of northern Metro Manila, central and northern Luzon residents. Now, they will be able to experience the convenience of easy travel from their homes to the Clark Airport. Travellers from abroad and domestic outlying stations may fly to Clark and journey on to popular travel spots in the Luzon area,” stated PAL’s president & chief operating officer, Jaime Bautista.

PAL will continue to serve Cebu, Davao and Puerto Princesa from Manila’s main airport.

Azamara Club Cruises has operated its first ever cruise to the Philippine port of Puerto Princesa.

The Azamara Quest cruise ship arrived in the city, which lies on the island of Palawan, on Monday as part of a 16-night voyage from Bali to Osaka. The ship has already called at Komodo and Sandakan, and will now move on to Manila, Hualien and Naha, before reaching Osaka.

An official ceremony was held onboard the ship to mark the maiden call, with plaque and key exchanges between Azamara Quest’s captain, Carl Smith, and the mayor of Puerto Princesa, Lucilo Bayron.

“Puerto Princesa is rising in popularity among tourists in recent years and we are proud to add it to Azamara Quest’s Asian itineraries,” said Marilen Sandejas-Yaptangco, Royal Caribbean’s representative in the Philippines. “Our successful call today is also the result of the strong support of the local government which marks a positive step in cruise development for the country.”

Puerto Princesa is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Subterranean River National Park, as well as tropical beaches and forests.

Following this voyage, the 694-passenger Azamara Quest will return from Osaka to Singapore on another 16-night cruise, before sailing to Europe in April.

Star Cruises has celebrated the inaugural visit of the SuperStar Aquarius cruise ship to Puerto Princesa.

The 51,300-tonne, 13-deck vessel sailed into the Philippine city on 11 November 2014, as part of a series of Southeast Asian voyages from its winter home port of Kota Kinabalu.

Located on the island of Palawan, Puerto Princesa is home to several natural attractions, most notably the UNESCO-listed Subterranean River National Park.

“We are proud to have Puerto Princesa as one of the new destinations for SuperStar Aquarius,” said Michael Goh, Star Cruises’ senior vice president of sales.

“During this deployment, SuperStar Aquarius will make 14 calls to Puerto Princesa, each time bringing in world travellers to this beautiful city. We are committed to promoting Puerto Princesa and the Palawan Island province to travellers across the region and the world.”

SuperStar Aquarius’ maiden voyage to the city brought international passengers from Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, China and Hong Kong to Puerto Princesa. They were welcomed by the local Department of Tourism, who arranged for traditional local dancers to perform upon the ship’s arrival.

SuperStar Aquarius’ homeport deployment in Kota Kinabalu will see it offer a series of one-, two- and three-night cruises to destinations in Malaysia and the Philippines.
