Pullman Khao Lak Resort is set to open its doors on 1 December this year, as it readies to present a new vision for hospitality in Phang Nga inspired by art, culture and nature. And, with a special introductory offer, coming in time for Christmas, this could be the luxury chillout experience you need to help drive off the demons of 2020!

Located on Bang Muang Beach at the northern tip of the province, Pullman Khao Lak embraces the history of Takua Pa, a town relatively undiscovered despite its status in the 13th century during Srivijaya times as the finest harbour on the west coast. Trade flooded into the town across the Indian Ocean due to shipping routes forged with the Tamil kingdoms and it prospered from the deep source of minerals and tin found inland.

By the 1900s it was a booming town full of Portuguese and Chinese immigrants, with the iconic architecture of this era remaining to this day. Takua Pa was a cultural melting pot, very much like Phra Nakhon was in Bangkok, and with it came a treasure trove of art, artifacts and culinary creations utilizing the healthy spice turmeric, or kammin in Thai, found in plentiful supply in the area.

Behind the town is Khao Sok National Park, a majestic green cloak stretching across 739 sq-km of land, 30-minutes from the resort. It is one of the world’s most ancient evergreen forests, featuring soaring limestone cliffs, colossal indigenous trees of hundreds of years old, Cheow Lan Lake and an extraordinary biodiversity of birds, reptiles and other animals offering unparalleled nature trekking and elevated routes for cycling.

Khao Sok National Park

It is the cultural history of Takua Pa and the astounding natural beauty of Khao Sok that have intersected to inspire Pullman Khao Lak, bound together by the warm and authentic southern Thai service culture in an area where people refer to themselves as “peuan” or friend in the local dialect.

“This is an area relatively undiscovered in Thailand, but one of incredible history and natural beauty,” said Pullman Khao Lak Resort general manager Hervé Duprat. “We are paying our respects to this heritage by curating access to it through art and design in the resort, as well as developing routes into the destination to explore local organic farms and the mesmerising Samet Nangshe.”

Special pre-opening rates bookable for stay periods from 1 December, 2020 to 31 March, 2021 are available starting at THB3,100 net per room per night going up to THB7,950 net for the pool villa. Click here for details or call 076 592 233.

Pullman, the upscale subsidiary of AccorHotels, has announced its first location in Laos with the opening of Pullman Luang Prabang.

Located in the UNESCO listed town and former royal capital of Luang Prabang the new hotel, little more than six miles from Luang Prabang International Airport, is situated inside a 16000 sq.mt estate set against a peaceful, yet dramatic backdrop of mountains, green fecund flora and the local paddy fields and farmland, etched with twisting rivers and streams.

Made up of 123 guest rooms and suites, as well as a two bedroom villa – which features separate living and dining spaces, a garden and pool – capable of hosting up to 50 guests, Pullman Luang Prabang incorporates traditional Laotian influences into its architecture creating a striking low-rise site.

The premium deluxe room

“We are delighted to introduce our first Pullman property in Laos. The resort styled hotel encapsulates the Pullman spirit of bringing global nomads together in the historical town of Luang Prabang,” said Patrick Basset, chief operating officer of AccorHotels in Upper Southeast and Northeast Asia and the Maldives.

The all-day dining L’Atelier restaurant offers a range of buffet and à la carte menu options while The Junction offers the Pullman brand signature Tapastry and Vinoteca which features a curated selection of wines and signature cocktails. Set amidst landscaped gardens and paddy fields, H2O pool bar serves a healthy choice of salad selections, sandwiches and homemade gourmet ice creams.

“Comprehensive meetings and events facilities make the resort a destination in itself”

Not forgetting the all-important meetings and events market Pullman Luang Prabang makes great play of its MICE facilities like eight different function rooms and breakout areas, as well as the town’s largest ballroom, the Nam Khong Ballroom, a 400 sq.mt conference and banquet hall capable of hosting 280 seated guests and 300 standing. Its outdoor patio is perfect for al-fresco events and pre-dinner cocktail functions.

“As the largest resort in the town Pullman Luang Prabang features low density designs on expansive grounds, its comprehensive meetings and events facilities make the resort a destination in itself with its natural surroundings and we look forward to welcoming leisure and business travellers,” said Jean Marc Lafosse, general manager of Pullman Luang Prabang.

Travel Daily spoke to  the dynamic GM, Tony Chisholm to get the low down on brand recognition, the hospitality market in Ho Chi Minh city and the future of Pullman Saigon Centre

Travel Daily) How is the hotel sector in Ho Chi Minh City currently performing, and is Pullman Saigon Centre experiencing similar trends?

The entire country has started this year off very positively with great occupancy levels despite there being more hotels and bedrooms available in the market year on year. I think most hotels are feeling optimistic about the business climate for 2017. With an increase in MICE and corporate business to date we have seen a number of dates being highly constrained in this first quarter.

Where do the majority of your guests come from, any are you seeing any shifts in your source markets?

As our occupancy continues to grow the market sources only really have variance in the MICE sector as this is business that usually occurs either annually or biannually but It looks like that there is more business coming to the city from Singapore then before. Our hotels all focus on their respective go to markets and their strategic leisure partnerships that for the most part of more European centric than from the Americas. For the Pullman Saigon we have worked hard to not be reliant on only one or two markets so to date we are delighted that this is working in our favour and most of our segments are more evenly spread across a number of countries.

AccorHotels has a strong leadership position in Vietnam; does this give you an advantage, in terms of operations, sales etc?

It certainly does help us in terms of the brand recognition and cut through as we now represent more of the brand Accor offers to customers ranging from our Luxury brands of Sofitel, upper Upscale Lifestyle of Pullman though to our most recent opening in South Vietnam on December 24th 2017 the Ibis Airport Saigon. Our Novotel brand here in Saigon continues to shine and the arrival of our boutique Luxury property M Gallery Hotel des Arts gives us the perfect range of options for the business and or leisure customer arriving in Saigon.

Since it opened in 2014, has the hotel developed many regular return guests? What do you think is drawing them back to the Pullman?

I always tell our “Connectors” which is what we call our hotel staff that we while we have one of the newest and coolest Lifestyle hotels in Vietnam with dynamic in-vogue food and beverage outlets it’s really the people in the hotel that link the experience for our guests.

Without the Connectors passionately welcoming and looking after our guests throughout their stay. especially our Le Club guests the hotel would not work nearly as well. I am receiving some lovely feedback on a daily basis about the Connectors we have in the hotel and this rewarding to read because my team and I are very particular about selecting the right talent to work at Pullman Saigon Centre.

What opportunities and challenges lie ahead for hoteliers in HCMC?

I think that we have to personalise the journey and the experience and go as deep as we can to truly articulate a stay that resonates with the guest and challenges them at the same time. More thought has to be given as to how we different our guest experiences from our competition and working tirelessly on new ideas for concepts and service.

We need to talk with our guests of course but my new mantra is to listen more then we talk so that we can download that is important to each traveller that enters our hotel. I also believe that a distinct standalone restaurant approach is required in such a dynamic food and beverage market with such unique concepts in the city. If hoteliers are not challenging their food & beverage teams and demanding more for our guests as in industry we could lose ground. There is no reason why hotels can’t be as innovative as standalone restaurant operations.

What further developments can we expect at Pullman Saigon Centre in 2017 and beyond?

We are very excited to be launching a new Wine Bar and Grill located on the 3oth floor of the hotel. The current concept has been in market for over three years now and we wanted to freshen it up and give it a big twist to complete the full lifestyle experience that Pullman Saigon Centre has to offer. In 2016 we created a cool Pop Up Burger Bar in the hotel lobby and so continuing our commitment to customers to deliver new food and beverage ideas we will launch in July, August something very unique to the city for the avid food and beverage lover.

We have selected a paddock to plate grass feed meat supplier from Australia matched with a new Australian Chef who loves to cook with Auzzie meat but the Grill also boasts grilled Seafood. We also wanted to make wine more accessible and so we will launch a new wine concept new to hotels in Vietnam – the last development for us to continue our resolute dedication to the guest. We will continue to challenge ourselves to be the best we can to showcase Vietnam and Saigon to every single customer that walks in the door.

AccorHotels has signed a major new agreement for three properties in Myanmar.

The partnership with LP Holding will kick off with the opening of the Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort in the second quarter of this year. This will then be followed by the Pullman Yangon Centrepoint and Mandalay Hill Resort MGallery by Sofitel, which are slated to open in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

“We are very pleased to partner with LP Holding with the development of these three new properties in Myanmar. The three hotels are situated in strategic locations in Yangon and Mandalay,” said Patrick Basset, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Upper Southeast & Northeast Asia. “Combined, the three hotels will add to the group’s growing portfolio, which ranges from luxury to economy.”

Set in 4.5 hectatres of gardens, Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort features 206 rooms with views of the city, Mandalay Hill, the Royal Palace and Irrawaddy River. It will also offer several F&B outlets and a conference centre.

The 300-room Pullman Yangon Centrepoint, located opposite Yangon’s High Court building and Independence Monument Park, will feature multiple F&B outlets, a spa, pool, fitness centre and extensive meeting space, including a ballroom and 10 meeting rooms.

Finally, the Mandalay Hill Resort, MGallery by Sofitel, will offer 150 rooms plus an outdoor pool and spa, which will be shared with the Mercure.

AccorHotels was one of the first international hotel groups to commit to Myanmar, after the country emerged from the international wilderness. It currently operates three hotels in Yangon under its ibis, Novotel and MiCasa brands, and an MGallery property in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

“After the sanctions were lifted, Myanmar became one of the most sought-after destinations in Southeast Asia. These three hotels will give travellers additional hotel choices with the growing tourism in the country particularly in Mandalay, as the city continues to develop,” said Lertsak Nopburanand, director of LP Holding.

Pullman Bangkok King Power, which became the world’s first Pullman hotel when it opened in 2007, has completed a major renovation project.

The downtown property has revamped its public areas, facilities and all 354 rooms and suites, in an comprehensive project that features some of the brand’s latest concepts.

These include “The Junction”, the hotel’s new open lobby area which comprises three areas: “Welcoming”, “Meeting” and “Food & Beverage”. The latter includes a cafe serving sweet and savoury dishes, which transforms into a lounge in the evening.

The 354 rooms now cover four categories, including 18 brand new deluxe rooms which offer private balconies overlooking the hotel’s gardens or swimming pool. All rooms at the hotel now feature free Wi-Fi with music connectivity, LED smart TVs, USB charging points, tea & coffee making facilities, rain showers and bathtubs. For premium guests, the hotel’s Pullman Executive Lounge has also been upgraded.

A brand new deluxe room

The hotel’s five restaurants and bars have also been completely redesigned. These include the Glen Bar, which reopens in a newly-constructed mezzanine space, and the Cuisine Unplugged restaurant which has launched a new organic dining concept with live cooking stations.

Finally, the Pullman Bangkok King Power’s 600m² of meeting space has been updated, with new technology, an open kitchen and car entrance for vehicle exhibitions.

“The renovation of Pullman Bangkok King Power presented an unprecedented challenge but the result is simply stunning,” said GM Marc Begassat. “From the initial design to the final construction process, our team has focused on every minute detail to ensure that the service, room amenities and food and beverage facilities – well, in fact, everything – is impeccably presented to satisfy every guest’s individual lifestyle.”

Pullman Bangkok King Power is located next to the King Power Duty Free Downtown Complex.

The hotel features 328 rooms and suites with views of the city and the sea. There are also five F&B outlets, a swimming pool, fitness centre, sauna and jacuzzi, and for the MICE market there is a range of meeting rooms and ballrooms that can cater up to 1,000 people.

Located in the state of Sarawak, close to the border with Brunei, Miri is a gateway to many of Borneo’s natural wonders and national parks. The Pullman hotel is 10 minutes’ drive from Miri International Airport, which has direct flights to and from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

The Chinese province of Anhui how has 1,500 more international hotel rooms, following the launch of three new properties by AccorHotels.

In partnership with China’s Wanda Group, AccorHotels has cut the ribbon on new Pullman, Novotel and Mercure hotels in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province. All three form part of the new Hefei Wanda Cultural Tourism City – a massive 900,000m² complex which centred on a theme park.

The new hotels feature a combined total of 1,570 rooms and suites – 404 in the Pullman, 589 in the Novotel and 577 in the Mercure – along with four restaurants, three bars and 2,940m² of conference and banqueting space.

“This is our major project with Wanda Group to date in Greater China. The opening of these three hotels brings our network to 187 operating hotels and resorts in the region,” said Michel Molliet, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Greater China.

“The project marks another milestone in our commitment in developing China’s dynamic tertiary cities. We feel upbeat and excited with this development as the tranquil landscaped surrounds and private lakeside area provide the ideal space for business and leisure travel.”

Located 10 minutes’ drive from downtown Hefei, the new Wanda complex includes a theme park, film park, indoor water park, shopping mall and other attractions.

It becomes Wanda’s second “Cultural Tourism City” in China, following a park that opened earlier this year in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi province. AccorHotels also operates three properties at that park.

AccorHotels has opened a trio of new hotels at a major new Chinese theme park.

The three new hotels, which will operate under the Pullman, Novotel and Mercure brands, add almost 1,400 rooms to the new Nanchang Wanda Cultural Tourism City complex, which is located in southeast China’s Jiangxi province.

Described by some as a rival to the new Shanghai Disneyland, the huge Wanda park covers 200 hectares and features outdoor and indoor amusement parks, hotels and resorts, interactive cinemas, large shopping malls and multiple dining options. Stand-out amenities include Asia’s largest aquarium, China’s fastest, highest and longest rollercoaster, and the country’s highest “drop tower”.

“The opening of three hotels in a single day symbolises AccorHotels’ continuous growth and development in the Greater China region,” says Michel Molliet, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Greater China. “This is our first and biggest hotel project in central China. The development of these three new hotels brings our Greater China network to 181 operating hotels and resorts across the country.

“The hotel cluster is strategically located at the heart of Nanchang’s landmark development, a major cultural tourist destination in its own right,” he added.

The new hotels include the 403-room Pullman Nanchang Wanda, 504-room Mercure Nanchang Wanda and 481-room Novotel Nanchang Wanda. All three hotels feature their own facilities, including F&B outlets, while the Pullman also has an 800m² ballroom for events.

As well as the three AccorHotels, Wanda is planning a further six hotels at the park including its own luxury Wanda Vista Hotel, which is already open.

AccorHotels has continued to expand its Pullman brand in Southeast Asia with the rebranding of an upscale resort in Phuket.

The Radisson Blu Plaza Resort Phuket has been taken over by AccorHotels and will be rebranded as the Pullman Phuket Panwa Beach Resort in April 2016.

This marks the continuation of Pullman’s expansion strategy, which has recently seen it rebrand the Prince Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and Grand Millennium Hotel in Bangkok.

“This joint partnership will offer guests added choice offerings and strengthens our position as the leading hotel operator of luxury and upscale resorts in the region.”

Located in Makham Bay, on Phuket’s quieter east coast, the resort is set on a 350 metre-long beach. It features 211 rooms and villas, four F&B outlets, two swimming pools, a spa, fitness centre and seven function rooms.

The property will become the third Pullman in southern Thailand, following the Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach and Pullman Khao Lak Katiliya Resort & Villas.

AccorHotels has strengthened its presence in China with the signing of a deal with the Luneng Group for three hotels in Beijing.

The three projects, two of which are new-build hotels, are expected to add a total of 525 rooms to AccorHotels’ Chinese inventory when they open in 2017 and 2018. The deal will also see the launch of Beijing’s first MGallery hotel.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Luneng Group, one of the leading real estate developers in China, for a batch of three projects in… Beijing,” said Paul Richardson, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Greater China.

“This unprecedented strategic partnership in the city involves three distinctive brands that will enable us to better cater to our guests’ needs while further strengthens our presence in the luxury and upscale segment which continues to be one of the key growth engines for AccorHotels’ expansion in China.”

The first of the three hotels to launch will be the Mercure Beijing Luneng, a 75-room conversion project that is expected to welcome its first guests in the fourth quarter of 2017. Then in the fourth quarter of 2018, AccorHotels will launch the two new-build hotels; the 300-room Pullman Beijing Luneng and the 150-room MGallery Beijing Luneng.

Two of the new properties, the Mercure and Pullman, will be located in Shunyi district of northeast Beijing. The Mercure Pullman Luneng will be attached to a shopping mall and will feature two restaurants, a lounge and function space.  Pullman Beijing Luneng meanwhile, will form part of a mixed-use project that includes residential, retail and office elements.

MGallery Beijing Luneng will be located in Grasse Town, an upscale villa development in Tongzhou, east Beijing, close to several golf clubs and 15 minutes’ drive from Beijing Capital International Airport, the Beijing New National Exhibition Center and the Oriental Universal Studio.

The addition of the MGallery means that from 2018, AccorHotels will operate seven of its brands in Beijing: ibis, Novotel, Mercure, Grand Mercure, Pullman, MGallery and Sofitel.

AccorHotels has expanded its Pullman portfolio in New South Wales with the signing of a major new property on the banks of Lake Macquarie, Australia’s largest saltwater lagoon.

The Pullman Trinity Point Resort will be the first luxury resort to be built at the lake in nearly a decade, and will form part of a AU$388 million (US$278m) integrated resort development.

Once complete, the hotel will offer a combination of 65 hotel rooms and 150 serviced apartments, plus conference facilities, a business centre, swimming pool, spa, gymnasium, restaurant, bar, executive lounge and retail outlets. Some of the rooms will offer views of Lake Macquarie and a new 188-berth marina.

AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for the Pacific region, Simon McGrath, said the hotel would “enhance the regional NSW accommodation offering in the five-star end of the market”.

“The resort will open up new opportunities for domestic and international travellers to venture outside of Sydney where the hotel market has been considerably constrained. The local economy will also benefit through local employment, supplier partnerships and added expenditure that will come with increased visitors to the region,” McGrath said.

“We’re confident that the resort will appeal to a number of market segments from weddings to business retreats given its close proximity to Sydney and other regional tourism hubs. Boat and yacht owners will also enjoy arriving to the resort by water access,” he added.

Lake Macquarie currently attracts more than 900,000 visitors each year. Construction of the new project, which will be spread across 23 hectares of land, is expected to commence in early 2016.

Located in France, the hotels have been operated under variable leases by AccorHotels since 2005 and 2007, under the ibis budget, ibis, Novotel, Mercure, Pullman and Sofitel brands.

The deal is scheduled to be finalised in the first half of 2016 and is subject to the usual conditions for this type of transaction.

The agreement includes a substitution clause for the buyer, enabling HotelInvest to immediately integrate these hotels into its dynamic asset management program. At the same time, considering the solid performance achieved by the 80 other hotels owned by Foncière des Régions, HotelInvest is committing to renew their lease agreements for 12 years, at the end of their respective terms.

“This transaction represents an important new step in the process of optimising HotelInvest, Europe’s leading hotel investor in the economy and midscale segments. The agreement with Foncière des Murs, AccorHotels’ main lease partner, demonstrates once again the Group’s ability to implement innovative, win-win solutions,” commented Sébastien Bazin, chairman and CEO of AccorHotels.

AccorHotels has launched its third Pullman hotel in Bangkok, following the rebranding of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit.

The central property, which now becomes known as the Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit, adds 325 rooms to the upscale brand’s Thai inventory.

“The Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit is a terrific addition to the network, providing stylish, upscale accommodation designed for today’s sophisticated traveller,” said Michael Issenberg, chairman & CEO of AccorHotels Asia Pacific.

“The hotel boasts an unbeatable location, outstanding meeting facilities and modern restaurants that make it popular not only with guests but with Bangkok locals.”

Bangkok was the location of the first ever Pullman hotel, when the Pullman Bangkok King Power launched in 2008. The company has since added the Pullman Bangkok Hotel G in the city’s Silom area, which was rebranded from a former Sofitel.

Pullman Bangkok Grande Sukhumvit is set in a distinctive sail-shaped building and offers two restaurants, a lounge, bar, outdoor pool, gym and spa. It also features 10 meeting rooms including a 500-pax ballroom.

The rebranding of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit comes hot off the heels of the launch of another Pullman in Southeast Asia, Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre Hotel & Residences, which was recently converted from the former Prince Hotel.

And Pullman’s Asia Pacific growth will continue in the coming years, with a pipeline of more than 40 hotels in the region.

Accor has signed a management agreement for a new luxury hotel near Sydney Airport.

The new Pullman Sydney Airport will form part of a new AU$100 million (US$85m) mixed-use development in the Mascot area of the city.

“The Sydney hotel market has been considerably constrained over the last two years with occupancies idling between 80-90%, hence the urgency for new inventory to service the high corporate and leisure demand in the city,” said Accor Pacific’s chief operating officer, Simon McGrath.

“Pullman Sydney Airport will not only add 229 rooms to Sydney’s bourgeoning tourism economy but it will be the first internationally-branded five-star hotel serving the international airport precinct.”

Accor has signed an agreement to take over the Hilton on the Park hotel in Melbourne.

The 419-room city centre hotel will now be rebranded, re-emerging as the Pullman Melbourne on the Park on 1 January 2015.

“The Pullman brand… is highly regarded throughout Asia and Europe, and it makes sense for us to grow this brand in Melbourne where there is clear demand for quality internationally-branded hotels aimed at the corporate and upscale leisure markets,” said Simon McGrath, chief operating officer of Accor Pacific.

“The city has performed consistently well over a long period of time and we have been eager to find the right opportunity to expand the Pullman brand in this market.”

The property will join one other Pullman in Melbourne, Pullman Melbourne Albert Park, which emerged from a major refurbishment in September 2013. It also becomes the 12th Pullman hotel in Australia, and Accor stated that growing its Pullman collection in the country is a “key priority” for the group.

Accor has reached the milestone of 600 hotels in Asia Pacific, with the signing of a new Pullman in Hong Kong.

The company has penned a management contract for the existing Park Lane hotel in Causeway Bay, which it now plans to bring into its upscale Pullman portfolio. And the addition is doubly significant, as it marks the Pullman brand’s 50th hotel in Asia Pacific.

“The addition of the Park Lane Hong Kong to the Pullman brand is a huge milestone for Accor because it brings us a strategic hotel in the centre of one of the world’s most important business and tourism hubs,” said Michael Issenberg, chairman & CEO of Accor Asia Pacific.

“The fact that it becomes our 600th hotel in the region is further cause for celebration because it is testament to Accor’s strong growth in the region and our investment in Pullman as a brand of the future.”

The Park Lane will be relaunched as a Pullman on 1 January 2015, following a renovation. The hotel offers 826 rooms and suites, three restaurants and bars, 14 meeting rooms, a wellness centre with gym, sauna and steam room, and a rooftop garden terrace.

“We are very excited to join the Accor family and the Pullman brand and believe this will open The Park Lane hotel to greater distribution channels and more guests from across the globe,” said Luc Bollen, regional director at Park Lane Hotels International.

“Pullman is the perfect brand for The Park Lane because it appeals to today’s cosmopolitan and connected traveller looking for upscale services and excellent business and meeting facilities. Our owners, Victoria Park Hotels Ltd are spending HK$200 million (US$26m) in the next two years to rejuvenate the hotel and we look forward to this new journey after celebrating 40 successful years in business.”

Accor first arrived in Asia Pacific in 1982 with the launch of the Novotel Orchid Singapore. It took the company 14 years to reach 100 hotels in the region, but between 1997 and 2007 the company’s Asian portfolio tripled in size to over 300 hotels.
And in the last six years Accor has now doubled that network to 600 hotels.

Sofitel Shanghai Jin Jiang Oriental Pudong

Accor is shifting its upscale and luxury development and marketing focus to the fast-growing Asia Pacific region.

The European hotel group is planning to open approximately one upscale or luxury hotel per month in Asia Pacific over the next five years, as it witnesses a strong rise in demand for its high-end properties from Asian consumers. Asian guests now contribute almost half of the company’s global luxury sales.

“Over the past decade Asia Pacific’s economic development has been remarkable and as travellers become more affluent, their desire to travel and explore the world grows, making this region the fastest growing luxury market in the world,” said Michael Issenberg, chairman & CEO Accor Asia Pacific.

Sofitel Shanghai Jin Jiang Oriental Pudong
Sofitel Shanghai Jin Jiang Oriental Pudong

“We currently have more than 170 luxury [and] upscale hotels with over 37,000 rooms in the region, plus over 70 luxury and upscale hotels under development. This means that Accor will open, on average, a new luxury and upscale hotel in Asia Pacific every month for the next five years.

“With Sofitel celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Accor has a long history in luxury and upscale hotels and our credentials in this segment continue to grow with our expanding pipeline in this sector, including more than 30 Pullman hotels in China alone,” he added.

To cater for this growth, Accor has now moved its global upscale and luxury marketing team to Singapore.

“With its central location, excellent infrastructure and business-friendly climate, Singapore is an ideal hub from which to manage Accor’s growth in the region, and brings the company’s leadership closer to more of Accor’s core luxury and upscale markets,” the company said in a statement.

The move to Singapore follows the recent restructuring of Accor’s business model along geographical lines, with its brands now divided into three segments: luxury and upscale, midscale and economy. The luxury and upscale segment includes the Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Grand Mercure and Sebel brands.

“Asian travellers are very demanding and the standard of hotels in this region is very high. We believe that Asia right now is a hub of creativity, innovation and transformation and that this environment provides the perfect breeding ground for us to take our luxury and upscale brands to the next level,” said Rick Harvey Lam, senior vice president of global marketing for Accor’s luxury and upscale brands.

Accor has rebranded an upscale resort in New South Wales to continue the growth of its Pullman brand in Australia.

The Quay West Resort Magenta Shores, which is located between Tuggerah Lake and the Pacific Ocean, 90 minutes’ drive north of Sydney, has now been renamed as the Pullman Magenta Shores.

The hotel recently completed a major refurbishment and now offers 59 rooms and villas, including one-, two- and three-bedroom units, plus a restaurant, bar, spa and meeting place. It is set within the Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club, which includes an 18-hole golf course, tennis court, two swimming pools and a gym. Most rooms overlook the golf course.

“Pullman has already established an enviable reputation in the Australian market following a major rebranding and refurbishment programme within the capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane over the past year. “Magenta Shores has been a fixture of NSW’s tourism scene for years and the combination of its idyllic location, new branding and the refurbishment of its guest rooms will see it attract even greater volumes of business, leisure and conference business.”

Accor has increased its full-year earnings target for 2013, after revenues climbed across the group.

The European hotel giant said it now expects to generate earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of EUR530 million (US$718) for the full-year – the top end of its previous guidance of EUR510-530m.

This upward revision follows an increase in revenues reported for 2013. Accor’s group revenues increased 2.7% on a like-for-like basis last year, to EUR5.54 billion. This included a 1.5% increase in revenue from Accor’s owned and leased hotels and a 14.7% jump in management and franchise fees.

All market segments saw steady growth, with upscale and midscale hotels experiencing a 2.9% rise in revenues, to EUR3.44bn, and revenue from economy hotels climbing 2.4% to EUR1.97m.

Accor said the “ramp-up of the MGallery brand and the reopening of newly renovated Pullman flagships” helped boost the upscale segment, while the performance of European hotels helped boost the economy sector.

“In 2013, Accor delivered a solid improvement in its business. This performance reflects the group’s strengths, including its recognised brands covering every segment of the hospitality market, a global footprint with leadership positions in the most promising growth regions and enthusiastic teams dedicated to driving the group’s development,” said Sébastien Bazin, chairman & CEO of Accor.

Last year, Accor embarked on a major restructuring strategy, splitting its business into two sections: HotelServices, for its managed and franchise hotel, and HotelInvest – a hotel owner and investor. And Bazin said that through the new strategy, he wanted to make Accor the “world’s best performing and most highly-valued hotel company”.

Accor opened a total of 170 hotels comprising 22,637 rooms in 2013, of which 85% were under management and franchise agreements. By region, 41% of the new openings were in Europe, 37% in Asia Pacific, 13% in Latin America and 9% in the Middle East and Africa.

By year-end, the group’s portfolio stood at 461,719 rooms. This makes Accor the world’s sixth biggest hotelier.

Accor has signed an agreement to manage three new-build hotels in Myanmar, in a deal that will introduce two new brands to the country.

The European company was one of the first international hoteliers to announce its entry into Myanmar, when it signed deals for two Novotels and one MGallery hotel earlier this year.

And now Accor has doubled its pipeline in the emerging country to six hotels, with the signing of agreements with Myat Min Co Ltd to manage the Pullman Yangon Myat Min, the Sebel Yangon Myat Min and Novotel Inle Lake Myat Min. All new Accor hotels are expected to be operational within three years.

“Accor is proud to announce the signing of three hotels,” said Patrick Basset, Accor’s senior vice president for Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar & the Philippines.

“Southeast Asia has long been a strategic market for Accor, and as Myanmar’s tourism industry develops, we see significant growth potential in this country as well. With this milestone, we have announced a total of six hotel projects in Myanmar and we look forward to helping to further develop the country’s tourism infrastructure in the years to come.”

First to open in 2014 will be the Novotel Inle Lake Myat Min – a 121-room hotel located on the banks of Inle Lake. The property will feature three restaurants, two bars, a ballroom, two meeting rooms, a business centre, swimming pool, fitness centre and spa facilities.

Opening in 2015, the Pullman Yangon Myat Min will become the first upscale Pullman hotel in Myanmar. The property will be located halfway between Yangon city centre and the airport, and will offer 300 rooms, two restaurants and two bars, four meeting rooms, a fitness centre, swimming pool and spa facilities.

Marking the entry of another new brand into Myanmar, and the Asia Pacific region, the Sebel Yangon Myat Min will be a serviced apartment hotel with 100 rooms, a restaurant, bar, two meeting rooms, a swimming pool and fitness centre.

Accor first announced its entry into Myanmar in March 2013, with management deals for two Novotel properties in Yangon and Mandalay and an MGallery property in the capital, Naypyidaw.

Pullman has revealed its ‘Business Playground’ meeting rooms as part of its rebranding.

Designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, the new playful meeting rooms have tables that look like poker tables, a private area for breaks and a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ to fir its ‘Work hard, Play hard’ motto.

Its new London property has the first of the new-style meeting rooms with a roll-out planned throughout 2014.

“Quality of service and efficient facilities are intrinsic to all upscale international hotels.  So, it’s the experience that makes the difference.  It takes inspiration for big ideas to make the leap forward. With “Business Playground” we aim to create unforgettable meetings for our guests, so that their gatherings in our establishments in London, Paris, or elsewhere are unlike any others,” said Xavier Louyot, SVP Pullman global marketing.

Mobile services and the internet are increasing blurring the lines between personal and work lives, a new survey has found.

The ‘always on’ nature of the devices has caused for a 24/7 culture where email checking is common throughout the day, with 82% of Brits telling hotel group Pullman they feel they must work outside of normal office hours.

Around 85% said having a mobile device has changed the way they see their work and personal lives, with Brits amongst the reluctant nations to blur the two.

A third spend at least 30 minutes browsing the internet a day for personal reasons while on a business trip, with travellers feeling there is a ‘moral agreement’ to handle personal activity during working hours as they often work when at home.

“The results of this survey confirm our vision of upscale international hospitality which is based on the “work-hard, play-hard” and reflects our customer’s lifestyle and professional personal balance,” said Xavier Louyot, SVP global marketing at Pullman.

Chinese travellers are the least likely to ‘switch off’ while on holiday, a new study has found.

Research by Accor’s Pullman brand, in conjunction with research institute IPSOS, shows that the Chinese remain addicted to their smartphones, with the majority checking them even while on vacation.

Seventy-nine percent of Chinese respondents said they have at least one ‘professional’ mobile device (compared with a global average of 60%), and during a week-long holiday, 14% of Chinese respondents said they spend 1-2 days on their professional devices. By contrast, only 5% of Australians allowed work to encroach on their leisure time so much.

Most global respondents said they believe it is acceptable to handle private activities during work hours, because they also work when they are at home. But there are differences in the types of personal behaviour that different nationalities think acceptable. For example 60% of Chinese respondents admitted to going onto dating sites at work, compared to only 6% of French respondents. Americans were found to be the most likely to spend work time shopping online, with 68% saying this was a regular activity, while 85% of Chinese research and book their holidays at work.

On average, 30% of the survey sample spends at least 30 minutes a day handling private issues during working hours.

“This survey corroborates and sheds further light on a trend we have observed in several areas. Universes that were, in theory, disconnected, are increasingly intermingled. In this case, the boundaries between professional and private worlds are increasingly blurred. However, we have a myriad other examples in daily life: the blurring of news and entertainment, of fiction and reality, or even of luxury goods and mass market products,” said Dominique Lévy-Saragossi, managing director of IPSOS France.

French and German travellers are the most resistant to merge their professional and private lives. They also have the most negative opinion of mobile professional devices, and are the least likely to handle private activities during their working hours.

By contrast, the Chinese are the least likely to switch off during what should be personal time – 65% of Chinese respondents said they check their professional devices during private meals, while only 34% of Australians and 36% of French would do the same.

Pullman is to embrace the trend of mixed business and leisure use of its properties in its new brand position unveiled in London today.

The upscale hotel brand, part of Accor, is to promote itself as a space for both business meetings and short weekend breaks as it aims to double its network in the next seven years.

“Our key message is that we want guests to “Work Hard, Play Hard” and have an atmosphere which mixes the spirit of business and leisure,” explained Gregiore Champetier, global chief marketing officer at Accor at the London launch. “We want to give them the opportunity to work if they want to, but mainly Pullman hotels are a place to feel well in a cosmopolitan environment.”

The ‘bleisure’ positioning will be displayed through trade training, a series of advertisements and a new ‘ying yang’ logo, while changes will also be made to its public spaces.

“In the hotel industry and destinations, it used to be that each would have pure business and pure leisure customers, but we want guests to feel at ease and be in the appropriate hotel no matter what they are travelling for and we have to capture both those clientele,” added Yann Calliere, CEO of Accor. “Every city has double destination meanings (business and leisure) and these are going better than those that have a single purpose, so we have to adapt to reach to both.”

Its new brand will be realised in a series of new developments in the lobby, food and drink and services, thanks to a tie-up with eight renowned designers. Check-in will be carried out through tablets at free-flowing desks, with an interactive wall in the lobbies that will display local information.

Its restaurant, bar and lounge will be in one open space in the lounge, while its meeting rooms will include a poker table, break zone and ‘secret box’ to keep meetings and events more relaxed.

The design changes come as Accor aims to double its Pullman portfolio by 2020. The brand currently has 79 hotels with 20 added in 2012 and more than 13 due this year including an opening in Belgium next week and one in Sochi, Russia in a few months.

Potential destinations include Istanbul, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Kiev, Liverpool, Edinburgh, while outside Europe its sights are on Uruguay, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Bogata and Qatar. Accor has no plans to enter the brand-crowded North America market.

Accor is updating its five Parisian hotels under the Pullman brand in the first stage of the name’s repositioning.

Under the project name ‘Pullman Paris Live’ its Pullman Paris La Defense was unveiled this week as the first to be renovated, with the others to follow up to April 2014.

All the hotels will remain open during their respective change period, which aims to create a brand that appeals to the growing trend of the blurred business and leisure customers, as well as those that are within one category.

“Each Pullman establishment in Paris has been re-examined and rethought to let our guests try out a new way of living the hotel experience, combining work and pleasure,” said Denys Sappey, SVP for Pullman France. “Through this project, Pullman proposes a vibrant, cosmopolitan and in style experience. The unveiling of the Pullman Paris La Défense is the first proof of our project.”

All rooms at the 382-room hotel have been updated and now include free fiber-optic WiFi, Nespresso machines, 46’ LED televisions, docking stations and a rainshower.

Public spaces will also be updated in the hotels, with temporary restaurants to be set up while work is carried out.

The Pullman Dubai Deira City Centre was recently inaugurated with 317 rooms.

The new property is the first step this year, sustained by a strong expansion in main tourist hubs and a new way to experience upscale hospitality through a cosmopolitan, vibrant and in style journey. This opening also revealed the first Pullman Artnight.

“We have huge ambitions for this brand which offers a strong and differentiated proposal to customers and owners. Middle East’s strong travel and tourism outlook matches Accor’s development goals of managing 150 Pullman hotels worldwide by 2015-2020, among which 15 will be in key GCC destinations,” said Yann Caillère, president and COO, Accor.

Elaborating on plans, Christophe Landais, managing director Accor Middle East said: “We currently operate four Pullman hotels in the Middle East, and will add two more – the 354-room Pullman Dubai Jumeirah Lakes Towers which will open this year and the 468-room Pullman Doha West Bay which will open in 2015.”

The Pullman Dubai Deira City Centre features four restaurants and bars; Le Cafe, a 24-hour lobby lounge; all-day dining restaurant Medley; La Fabrique, a New York-style venue for after-work drinks and the outdoor rooftop pool lounge, Azure. The SOMA Spa, uses Clarins products while the ‘Fit Lounge’ has cardio and weight-training equipment. In October 2013, the hotel will have an entire floor dedicated to meetings and events with nine meeting rooms featuring the Pullman Co-Meeting concept.

Accor is set to open two of its upscale brands in Doha in 2015 as part of its aggressive expansion strategy in the Middle East, as reported by The Peninsula.

The company would launch Pullman Doha West Bay and MGallery Doha Msheireb after two years, according to Philippe Seguin, vice-president of sales, marketing and distribution, Middle East.

“Today we have huge ambitions in Qatar. We have a Pullman under construction and we will open as well MGallery, which would be an upscale hotel in the new Msheireb Downtown,” said Seguin.

It targets particularly the corporate and MICE sector in the region. MGallery Doha in Msheireb Downtown will draw a parallelism to architecture rooted in Qatari history and heritage on which the ambitious development has been based.

“All the international chains are now in Doha. There are a lot of developments on corporate market and the leisure sector has become more and more important as well, making Qatar an emerging international market in the leisure sector. I think the future is very bright for Qatar definitely,” he said.

Accor recently opened a Pullman hotel in London

Accor is on track to meet its targets thanks to growth in the APAC and Latin America markets, it has announced.

The hotel group said it remained “reasonably optimistic” for the year-end having continued with its expansion and opened 5,600 rooms in the third quarter.

It is expected to show “sustained robust demand” into the fourth quarter thanks to convention and events business in Paris, London and Germany with a full-year EBIT target of EUR510-530 million (GBP413-430m).

In its third quarter results, RevPAR excluding tax improved in Germany and Italy for its upscale and mid-market hotels, while the largest decreases were in the UK and Netherlands. However figures in the UK were improved for its UK hotels and Germany, while its Spanish and Dutch hotels posted double-digit drops in RevPAR.

Accor has recently embarked on several acquisitions, expansions and renovations to its portfolio including the roll-out of more Pullman hotels across Europe; a brand relaunch of ibis and the takeover of several Latin American properties.

Accor has announced the launch of another Pullman hotel in Australia, and revealed plans to make the upscale business brand the largest five-star hotel label in Australia.

The Quay Grand Suites Sydney will rebrand to become the Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour, marking the third Pullman property in Sydney and the continuation of the brand’s Australian expansion. The brand’s growth is being driven by a series of rebrandings, following Accor’s purchase of Mirvac Hotels.

Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour

“It makes sense for us to grow this brand in Australia where there is clear demand for quality internationally-branded hotels aimed at the corporate and upscale leisure markets,” said Simon McGrath, Chief Operating Officer of Accor Pacific.

“We see Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour as one of the brand’s flagship hotels in the region and it will be the venue for the Pullman Global Launch in December, as we celebrate the strength and growth of the Pullman brand.

“There is considerable investment being made in the Pullman network in both Australia and internationally, and the expansion of the brand in Australia comes at a time when the brand is launching signature hotels in other major centres around the world. Pullman is already a major brand in key source markets for Australia across Asia and Europe, and it is anticipated that there will be some 150 Pullman hotels and resorts by 2015,” he added.

Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour joins two other Pullmans in Sydney – Pullman Sydney Olympic Park and Pullman Sydney Hyde Park (currently completing a major upgrade following its rebranding from Sydney Marriott in May 2012). It also joins Pullman Reef Casino in Cairns and the recently rebadged Pullman Resort Bunker Bay in Western Australia.

The Sebel Cairns, The Sebel King George Square Brisbane and The Sebel Albert Park Melbourne are all expected to become Pullmans within the next six months, which puts Pullman on track to becoming Australia’s largest five-star brand with a portfolio of 15 hotels by the end of 2013.

Set on the eastern shore of Sydney’s Circular Quay, Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour features 67 one- and two-bedroom suites, all of which come with balconies, separate lounge and dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, and views either of Sydney Harbour or the Botanical Gardens.

Pullmans are designed primarily as business hotels, and the latest Sydney addition features three rooms catering for up to 140 delegates.

Accor has opened its 14th Pullman hotel in China, making the country the upscale hotel brand’s largest market.

The new Pullman Anshan Time Square, in northeast China’s Liaoning province, marks a key phase in the brand’s Chinese expansion plan. It now has 14 hotels in that country, putting it ahead of France as the country with the most Pullmans. A further 26 are expected to open in China by 2015.

“We’re delighted to introduce the Pullman brand to Anshan,” said Paul Richardson, Chief Operating Officer of Accor Greater China. “The opening of Pullman Anshan Time Square, the second Accor hotel in the city, is further strengthening Accor’s overall expansion strategy and opening up opportunities in first to third tier cities around the country.”

Located in the Lishan district of Anshan, which is dubbed China’s “iron and steel capital”, Pullman Anshan Time Square is an upscale business hotel featuring 331 rooms, all with 42-inch LCD TVs and complimentary high-speed internet access.

The hotel also features four F&B outlets, including Anshan’s first French restaurant, as well as a fitness centre, an indoor spring water heated pool, yoga rooms and a games room with table tennis and billiards.

Like all Pullman hotels it will cater mainly for corporate travellers, and includes the ‘Pullman Connectivity Lounge’ business centre, which is designed in tandem with Microsoft, as well as more than 900m² of conference and banqueting space and dedicated meeting and event teams.

Accor now operates 67 Pullman hotels around the world, but is aiming to expand this to 150 in the next few years with Asia a major focus for development.

Accor has completed the purchase of the Mirvac Group’s hotel interests in Australia and New Zealand.

The deal will see the European hotel giant add a total of 43 hotels to its portfolio across Australia and New Zealand, and the majority of the Mirvac’s hotel employees will transfer to Accor.

The Sydney Marriott Hotel will be rebranded as Pullman Sydney Hyde Park from 22 May
The Sydney Marriott Hotel will be rebranded as Pullman Sydney Hyde Park from 22 May

While the majority of Mirvac’s hotels will remain under their existing brands – Quay West Suites & Resorts, Sea Temple, Sebel Hotels, Resorts & Residences and Citigate Hotels – in the short term, Accor said a major priority following the deal would be to rebrand a number of the hotels under its upscale Pullman brand.

In the first phase of integration, the Sydney Marriott Hotel will be rebranded as Pullman Sydney Hyde Park from today (22 May), while Sebel Newcastle Beach will become the Novotel Newcastle Beach in June.

“The settlement of this deal will fundamentally reshape the hotel industry in Australia and New Zealand,” said Michael Issenberg, Chief Operating Officer for Accor Asia Pacific.

“We have seen many of the original overseas players in the hotel sector retreat from this region in recent years while Accor has aggressively grown its network through management and franchise contracts and strategic acquisition deals such as the purchase of Mirvac’s hotels.

“We will be able to add significantly to the competitiveness of the Mirvac hotels once they are fully integrated into the Accor network. The benefits will come from access to our global distribution platform, strong branding, our pre-eminent position in the rapidly expanding Asian markets, and the support of the region’s most experienced and professional workforce,” he added.

Commenting on the expansion of the Pullman brand, Issenberg said Accor was planning to rebrand “a number of existing Mirvac hotels to Pullman”, as part of the overall aim to boost the Pullman portfolio to more than 150 hotels by 2015, including 60 in Asia Pacific.

Following the takeover of Mirvac’s hotels, Accor’s total portfolio in Australia and New Zealand will grow to 240 hotels, comprising 32,000 rooms.

Established in 1972, Mirvac is one of Australia’s largest hotel companies.

Accor has announced the opening of its 500th hotel in the Asia Pacific region.

The Pullman Gurgaon Central Park, which also marks the debut of the upscale Pullman brand in India, takes the European hotel group’s regional inventory to almost 95,000 rooms across 16 countries.

Denis Hennequin, Accor’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented; “I am very pleased with this dual milestone for Accor in Asia Pacific, which reaffirms our position as the leading operator of hotels in this key growth market and anchors our growth ambitions for the region. It is very appropriate that we are celebrating our 500th hotel in Asia Pacific in India, which is a market that provides a significant growth opportunity for Accor building on the foundations that have been established in the country to date.”

Located in Gurgaon, a satellite city of New Delhi, Pullman Gurgaon Central Park offers 285 rooms and more than 1,500m² of meeting space.

Accor is currently undergoing a major expansion plan in Asia Pacific and aims to boost its portfolio to more than 700 hotels by 2015. In India alone, Accor expects to operate 23 hotels by year-end and 90 by 2015.

“The Asia Pacific region today is one of Accor’s strongest areas of focus, as is evidenced by our rapid pace of expansion in recent years,” said Michael Issenberg, Chairman & Chief Operating Officer of Accor Asia Pacific. “Since we commenced operations in the region in 1982, Accor’s network has grown from one hotel in Singapore to 500 hotels in 16 countries today. Two years ago we celebrated our 400th hotel in the region and the rate of expansion since has accelerated significantly as we are on track to open 100 hotels within 2012 in Asia-Pacific alone.”

Globally, Accor is now present in 92 countries with more than 4,400 hotels and 530,000 rooms.

The decision means that international tourists will soon be able to fly direct to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city, rather than having to connect via regional hubs such as Kunming. According to Lijiang municipal government, the number of passengers passing through the airport could double to more than four million per year by 2015.

Lying in the foothills of the Himalayas, Lijiang is famous for its cobbled streets, waterways and bridges. It is also home to several luxury hotels including a Banyan Tree, Pullman and Crowne Plaza.
