Campers and beach-goers in Khor Al-Adaid will be greeted by an enhanced experience starting this winter. Qatar has launched Al Enna Project to improve the tourist destination.

Al Enna is an Arabic word that means camping ground. The development project aims to ensure campers and visitors to Khor Al-Adaid can benefit from safe and enjoyable experiences while protecting the wildlife in the area and providing access to more services and amenities.

Just 40 miles from the capital, Khor Al-Adaid is a UNESCO-recognised natural reserve due to its beauty and diversity of its sand dunes. Moreover, it is one of the rare places where the desert meets the sea. Tourists flock in the area during winter.

One of the popular activities in Khor Al-Adaid is riding 4×4 off-road safaris and dune bashing. To ensure the safety and protect the campers’ privacy, the Project will designate a special zone for ATV sports. Covering an area of 300,000 square metres, the zone will feature 28 ATV rental shops and eight ATV tracks.

Khor Al-Adaid, Qatar

To protect the indigenous flora and fauna, dune bashing will be prohibited in areas with wildlife. In addition, a wildlife nursery will be introduced to encourage the return of plant and animal populations that have been affected by previous camping seasons.

Sealine Beach will also see major developments over an area that can accommodate up to 15,000 visitors. This includes creating shaded areas, opening cafés and restaurants as well as designating a special area for families and another for children. In addition, fitness machines will be installed as well as equipment provided for water and beach sports such as football and volleyball.

A special entertainment zone will also be made to host cultural activities and events during the weekends. To be in keeping with Qatar’s cultural heritage, the zone’s design will draw inspiration from the surrounding area’s natural features.

Omar Al Jaber, a Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) representative and Al Enna Project’s official spokesperson, said: “The project is the first step in a comprehensive plan to develop the Khor Al-Adaid area and comes as part of QTA’s efforts to enhance Qatar’s visitors end-to-end experience as outlined in the Next Chapter of the National Tourism Sector Strategy 2018-2023.”

Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German AIDA Cruises and Italian Costa Cruises to develop cruise tourism in the country.

The MoU also includes the possibility of cooperation to build attractive packages and special services dedicated to Costa Cruises and AIDA guests, in addition to joint communications, co-marketing actions and familiarisation trips.

The initiative will focus on Doha, the capital of Qatar, which already has a cruise terminal, and aims to build a strong relationship between the cruise lines and Qatar ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The partnership resulted from the round of talks between QTA officials and major cruise lines that highlighted the country’s growing tourism sector. QTA also boasts the significant efforts underway to provide cruise visitors with smooth and seamless experiences at the port of entry and throughout the country.

Qatar welcomed over 65,000 cruise passengers last season – a 39% increase from the 2016/17 season. The majority of passengers were German and Italian. This notable growth is supported by the Doha Port Redevelopment Project, which will convert the port at the heart of the capital’s cultural district into a permanent cruise terminal and tourist destination in its own right.

QTA is working with developers to ensure facilities are in place to receive two ships per day, and a new terminal is in the pipeline, expected for completion in 2020.

“200,000 cruise visitors by 2020”

QTA’s Acting Chairman, Hassan Al Ibrahim, said: “We are delighted to announce these new developments and additions to the fleet of cruise ships arriving at Doha Port over the coming seasons. After the exceptional success of the last cruise season, this agreement is another step towards our target of 200,000 cruise visitors by 2020, and we are looking forward to working with our partners on the ground in Qatar to provide unforgettable experiences to each and every passenger.”

He added, “Qatar’s authentic experiences and traditional hospitality have proven immensely popular with cruise visitors, and we believe that once AIDA and Costa, two leading brands in the industry, have made these initial visits, Qatar will be a frequent destination on their itineraries.”

Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises were the first cruise companies in the world to start regular cruises in the Arabian Gulf back in 2006. During winter seasons, both companies offer one-week cruises in the area with the “fly&cruise” formula. The majority of guests come from Europe: Germans for AIDA; Italians, French, Spanish, Austrian and Swiss for Costa.

Costa Mediterranea will inaugurate Costa’s presence in Qatar with one call set on 6 March 2019, while the fleet flagship Costa Diadema will offer sixteen calls to Doha during her 7-days 2019/2020 winter program.

The luxury AIDAprima is holding port bookings for eight calls in Doha during the 2018/19 season and will make several more calls in the 2019/2020 season. Between them, the two cruise lines will potentially bring up to 45,000 passengers in the coming season.

In a recent development, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) announced an agreement with TUI Cruises.

As part of the agreement, the German cruise line will be including Qatar in its itineraries for the 2017-2018 season, bringing seven cruise ships with up to 17,500 visitors to the country.

The agreement puts Qatar on track to achieve its target of 250,000 visitors on board cruise ships in 2019. Qatar Ports Management Company (Mwani Qatar) has confirmed the berthing schedule for the cruise ships.

QTA is working closely with Mwani Qatar to expand various elements of the country’s cruise industry, in particular, Doha Port, which will be undergoing redevelopment to transform it into a full-time cruise terminal and tourist attraction.

“Cruise tourism in Qatar provides huge opportunities for growth of the country’s overall tourism industry and is central to the realisation of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030,” said QTA chief tourism development officer Hassan Al Ibrahim.

He further added Qatar is set to receive between 35 to 40 ships in the upcoming 2016-2017 cruise season, bringing in an expected 55,000 passengers. TUI Cruises has planned for Mein Schiff 5 ship to dock in Qatar. The ship has 15 decks and has a capacity to carry up to 2,506 passengers on two persons per cabin basis.

The Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 (QNTSS) identifies the cruise industry as a focus area in coming years, with the outlook of Qatar to become an emerging cruise destination exceptionally bright. The GCC is among the top three cruise destinations worldwide during the winter months, offering tremendous opportunity for Qatar’s tourism sector and overall economy.

The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) have recently turned their attention to transit and stop over programmes to boost its tourist arrivals.

“There is an increasing number of passengers who make short visits to Qatar via the Hamad International Airport (HIA),” said QTA ‘s chief marketing and promotions officer Rashed Al-Qurese.

For two years QTA and Qatar Airways have been capitalising on these two programmes to give the latter’s passengers, who are staying over for more than five to six hours, a chance to roam Doha for about three hours through the Doha City Tour initiative free of charge.

Transit passengers, booked in hotels near HIA for 10 hours or more, usually get an opportunity to visit some touristic attractions in Doha.

“We hope to run a global stopover programme before summer season next year, and thereby increase number of tourists around that low season.” HIA has served 7.3mn passengers (including transit and stopover) during first quarter of this year.

This figure represents a 17% increase on number of passengers who travelled through Doha International Airport (previous hub) during 2014.

The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is on a high with its tourism performance for the first quarter of 2015.

The authority recently reported the results. Regional and international visitor arrivals totalled 841,025, representing a strong 11% year-on-year increase. In comparison to Q1 2014, arrivals from the Americas grew by 17%, from Europe by nine percent, and from Other Asia by seven percent. Arrivals from the GCC, Qatar’s largest source market, grew markedly in Q1 2015, increasing by 16% compared to the same quarter of 2014.

Arrivals from other Arab and other African nations remained roughly same.

The overall growth from GCC countries was primarily dominated by an increase in visitor arrivals from Saudi Arabia which grew by 28% in Q1 2015 compared to the same quarter of 2014. The majority of this growth took place in March when visitor arrivals grew by 82% compared to March 2014, with 241,008 Saudi visitors entering Qatar. At the same time, visitor arrivals from Bahrain, Oman, and UAE also grew, however, by modest rates.

Tourism in Qatar is on a high with several projects underway.

As per recent statistics, projects totalling US$8.48 billion are currently underway that will set Qatar as a major tourist and venue attraction. These projects include Doha Festival City, Doha Convention Centre, Rayyan Mall (Mall of Qatar), Doha Zoo, Lusail Museum, Katara Towers (Lusail Marina), and the FIFA World Cup football stadiums.

Rding on this growth, the Arabian Travel Market team held their annual roadshow in Doha. The event witnessed keen attendance from industry partners. Qatar will be represented at ATM 2015 with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), Qatar Airways, Al Rayyan Hospitality, and Katara Hospitality occupying majority space.

“Qatar has witnessed astounding economic growth over the past decade, and this has translated into a healthy tourism sector,” explains Nadege Noblet, exhibition manager, Arabian Travel Market. “The recent completion of important infrastructure projects, such as the Hamad International Airport in 2014 and Qatar Airways’ plans to significantly expand its capacity across Europe this year, has confirmed Qatar’s position as an important travel and tourism hub.”

The total number of projects planned or underway include five museums and libraries; 57 hotels and resorts; 22 shopping venues; 21 sports facilities; 11 theme parks, six convention centres; and a theatre according to a report from MEED.

Qatar welcomed 2.8 m visitors in 2014, an 8.2% increase in numbers over previous year. 40% of tourists came from other GCC countries, 15% from European countries and 28% from Asia and Oceania, according to figures released by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA). Hotel occupancy rates increased to an average of 73% in 2014, with five-star properties a major share of visitors, and hoteliers in 2015 are expecting those numbers to rise further.

Qatar’s tourism industry is on a steady growth plan.

The country as per recent reports will attract investments of up to $45bn in its tourism-related projects up to 2030, said a senior official.

“There is a projected investment of $11.5bn in the tourism sector alone up to 2030,” said Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) chairman Issa bin Mohamed al-Mohannadi.

He said, “We are introducing the National Tourism Strategy 2030 to continue to develop Qatar as a destination while strengthening the tourism industry. Qatar will have to build more rooms, but we have to create a destination at the same time. We are projecting organic growth in the sector from visitor numbers and planning the amount of rooms based on forecast demand.”

Elaborating further he added: “We are exploring options for temporary accommodation, such as cruise ships or floating hotels to ensure that there is an optimal balance between supply and demand for accommodation.”

Visitor numbers too have been supporting this growth as Al-Mohannadi puts it: “We are averaging an increase of 11% to 13% in number of visitors every year. The world average is three to four percent and we are achieving four times that. In line with FIFA’s requirements, we anticipate having 50,000 to 60,000 rooms. However, we are developing the local industry in line with demand.”

Currently, Qatar has 14,000 rooms with another 5,000 expected to come to the market in the next four years. “This will bring the total to 19,000 and based on demand we will add an additional 11,000 to bring the total to 30,000,” he said.

Qatar is gearing up to cater for a boost in tourism numbers. The country will soon receive four new start-up tourism projects funded by Qatar Development Bank (QDB).

One of the four start-up projects in tourism includes a luxury dhow dining Cruise Company. QDB has also recently entered into an agreement with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) towards promoting the local tourism industry and as part of Qatar’s National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS) 2030.

The other companies are Doha Bus, a 4×4 leasing and services company; Q-tickets for development of a ticketing and mobile information centre; and Informa Tharawat, a conference and exhibition services company.

“These projects are a major step forward in QTA’s efforts to grow a sustainable tourism sector,” said Issa bin Mohamed al-Mohannadi, chairman of QTA.

QTA will support these investors by helping secure necessary licences and offer administrative guidance.

“While these opportunities are a critical starting point, there are countless opportunities for Qatari SMEs to find success in tourism and other strategic sectors,” said QDB CEO Abdulaziz bin Nasser al-Khalifa.

NTSS, which aims to position Qatar as a ‘world-class hub with deep cultural roots, is targeting seven million tourists annually by 2030 and the strategy is set to increase tourism’s total contribution to the national GDP (gross domestic product) and enhance the total tourist spend in Qatar to nearly US$10.7bn. QTA director Hassan al-Ibrahim had early this year mentioned that the aim is to have the tourism industry contribute a total of 5.1% to GDP by 2030, up from the current 2.6%.

Qatar Tourism Authority’s (QTA) first half review shows that the Gulf state is making progress towards becoming a developed and sustainable tourism destination.

According to the data, total visitor arrivals grew by 8% in the first half, reaching 1.42 million. More than half a million GCC nationals (536,264) visited Qatar during this period, representing around 38% of tourists.

During the same period, the average hotel occupancy rate rose to 74% from 67% last year, assisted by a 1.9% decrease in available rooms due to renovation-related closures.

“Confidence in Qatar’s tourism sector remains buoyant and our efforts continue to bear fruit in terms of promoting and developing the sector,” said Hassan al-Ibrahim, chief tourism development officer at QTA.

“The launch in February of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 provides a clear framework to all sector stakeholders for how we will contribute to moving our country towards a prosperous future and one that is less dependent on oil and gas resources.”

Qatar has set its sights diversifying its global meetings offerings by investing more than US$20 billion in tourism-related infrastructure. This investment is directed towards boosting its MICE credentials.

The state has identified the meetings industry as a key pillar of economic diversification and growth. Keeping this in mind, the country is developing venues, hotels, world-class aviation facilities and high-profile events.

Targeting this key industry is the forthcoming Gulf Incentives, Business, Travel and Meetings (GIBTM). The event is scheduled to takes place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from 24-26 March 2014.

“Qatar’s position as a convention destination of growing global prowess is evident having moved up 49 places to reach 111th position in the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) league,” noted Lois Hall, GIBTM exhibition manager.

“A multi-billion dollar investment plan earmarked for tourism-related projects will surely promote Qatar further up the rankings and attract interest of global meeting planners,” she added.

Qatar’s travel and tourism sector currently contributes US$3.4 billion to GDP directly, the equivalent to 1.8% of economic activity, according to the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC), but the industry’s total contribution (direct and indirect) is nearer US$13 billion or 6.7% of GDP. The WTTC anticipates sector growth of 7.1% in 2013 and an annual average of 4% growth between 2013 and 2023.

The destination is already skewed heavily towards meetings business given the industry accounted for 72% of all visitors to the state in 2011, according to Oxford Economics, plus the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has confirmed the MICE segment is “by far the largest piece of the tourism pie”.

Infrastructure developments designed to drive more business visitors to Qatar are wide-ranging and include the US$15 billion Hamad International Airport (formerly known as New Doha International Airport), with the first phase set to open by the end of the year and the facility expected to be fully operational by 2020.

In addition, US$25 bn been has allocated for railway construction and a further six bn has been allotted for a new Doha port project to include a cruise ship terminal. The new Doha Exhibition & Convention Centre will provide 29,000 square metres of conference space when it opens in Q1, 2014, plus 110 hotels are under construction in Qatar, adding a further 19,931 rooms to the current 13,407 room inventory. Further new hotel and venue announcements are anticipated as Qatar gears up to stage– the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. To cater to the event, Qatar will build nine new stadiums and renovate three, with the 12 venues divided among seven host cities (Doha, Al-Daayen, Al-Khor, Al-Rayyan, Al-Shamal, Al-Wakrah and Umm Slal).

Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) projects tourism will contribute eight percent to the country’s gross domestic product by 2030 with implementation of Qatar Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, as reported by The Peninsula.

“The target is eight percent, which is the international average contribution to GDP by 2030,” said QTA chairman Issa Mohammed Al Mohannadi ahead of the official launch of the strategy by year-end.

The tourism sector is also projected to contribute to creating about 127,000 jobs by 2030, which represents 5.3% of total employment in the country by 2030 – a huge leap from 19,900 jobs in 2012 which was only 1.8 percent of the total employment.

Revealing latest figures on tourist arrivals, Al Mohannadi said Qatar saw 15% increase in number of inbound tourists in the third quarter this year, with 17% rise in number of tourists from GCC and seven percent growth in tourist arrivals from other countries.

He stressed that the Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition (MICE) sector as a major contributor to the growth Qatar tourism is witnessing.

“Business tourism is far more lucrative than leisure tourism,” he said, adding non-Arab tourists tend to come to the country for business tourism.

Increased tourist for Eid
Overview of Qatar

But this does not mean leisure tourism would not be given much attention. In fact, there is a need to develop it by creating more products to sustain tourism momentum throughout the year, he added. To encourage foreign investment, Al Mohannadi said one of the regulations would grant exemption to foreign investors to set up businesses without the need for sponsors and with 100 percent ownership.

He denied reports that it is part of the strategy to minimise outbound tourism and stressed the right of every resident here to travel. “The right to travel and experience other destinations is a vital right of every individual,” he said, adding studies have shown outbound tourism does not negatively impact a country’s tourism.

“China has 83 million of its population travelling around the world but that does not mean their tourism sector has failed. People will have to travel to other countries no matter how many tourist destinations it has,” he said.

Stressing the importance of the tourism sector in countries like Qatar, Al Mohannadi said, “The most influential countries in the world today have active tourism sector. There is a need to align the tourism sector to Qatar having played major role in world affairs.”

QTA started outlining the tourism strategy in collaboration with local stakeholders in June last year. It looked into global reports from international organisations and studied experiences of 26 countries which succeeded in the sector.

Aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy 2011-2016, the tourism strategy takes into account local tradition and values, economic impact and environmental sustainability.

The agreement will see UNWTO update and create benchmarked processes within QTA. Based on international benchmark standards, the UNWTO and QTA shall develop a consistent and locally relevant monitoring and quality control system across the wide range of tourism activities described under Law 6 of 2012, described as the ‘Tourism Law’.

The UNWTO partnership shall further ensure that Qatar has a well-planned and reliable tourism industry meeting expectations of the international travel trade. While the country tourism sector thrives, QTA’s agreement with UNWTO also seeks to align the tourism boom with Qatar’s 2030 vision, ensuring that tourism is also sustainable.

Commenting on the initiative, HE Eng Issa Bin Mohammed Al-Mohannadi, chairman of Qatar Tourism Authority, said: “We are conscious of the importance of environmental sustainability for tourism development and as the regulator of industry standards and codes, we are taking the lead in ensuring sustainable growth and development of Qatar’s fast-growing tourism sector.”

Taleb Rifai

UNWTO secretary-general, Taleb Rifai said:  “This is an important step forward in developing Qatar’s tourism policies, legislative framework and institutional capacities. This agreement reflects the strategic priority afforded, by the Government of Qatar to tourism, as a driver of socio-economic development. Qatar has made strong headway and is firmly establishing itself as a prominent destination on the region’s tourism map. The activities contemplated in the agreement will translate into more competitive and varied tourism products and services.”

QTA’s overall tourism development strategy is aimed at lowering Qatar’s carbon footprint, energy and water consumption, and so also at protecting Qatar’s natural habitats, its wildlife and its marine reserves.

Qatar’s tourism sector grew 13% in the first quarter of 2013 as compared to 2012, fueled by a hotel boom.
