Hotels in China ought to pay more attention to their online hotel bookings as China’s online hotel reservation industry maintains speedy growth with monthly active users (MAU) reaching 91.09 million in Q2 2018, which is 20.1% increase compared to the first quarter.

The research from Trustdata’s Mobile Big Data Monitoring service added that online booking platforms such as Ctrip, Meituan Hotels, Qunar, Tongcheng-eLong and Fliggy were the popular and fast-growing platforms for the quarter. These players accounted for 96.4% of the online hotel bookings in the second quarter.

The competitive landscape of online hotel booking becomes clear-cut, with traditional OTAs like Ctrip and super platforms like Meituan Hotels carving up the market. Meituan Hotels ranks first by both order volume and room night in Q2. It exceeded the combined room nights registered on Ctrip, Qunar and Tongcheng-eLong again, seizing 46.2% of the market share in Q2 2018.

Fliggy ranks first in terms of customer stickiness. Super platforms like Meituan Hotels and Fliggy are gaining popularity, thanks to the user bases of Meituan-Dianping and Taobao accumulated via such high-frequency services as food delivery and online shopping, respectively.

Lastly, Ctrip is a pioneer of OTA that is offering all travel-related services. It has the edges in high-starred hotels but is challenged by Meituan Hotels and Fliggy. While the main users of Ctrip are middle-aged with strong consumption capacity, users of Meituan Hotels and Fliggy are younger and have massive buying power in the future.

Millennials Again

The Chinese millennials or the Post-80s and Post-90s consumers are the critical driving forces on this rapid growth of accommodation bookings. Millennials are adept in using the technology and to share their information online unlike the older generations.

Millennials are thirsty for unique experiences. More often than not, they search for one-of-a-kind destinations and activities and makes sure to take a photo as proof and to post on their social media. Therefore, it is important to meet their demands and to curate experiences around their wants.

The third and lower-tier cities or the less populated and less industrialised cities become a major growth driver, contributing 50% to the total online hotel bookings in June. Among the 20 million new users in Q2 2018, the post-80s and post-90s are the main force, while the demand from the post-00s or Gen Z also begins to grow.

Foreign tourists are not alone in exploring the less popular places in China. Locals are also on their foot discovering the beauty of their country. The proportion of hotel reservations made by locals exceeds 30% in Q2 2018, indicating that online hotel booking is gaining popularity among travellers as well as locals.

Qunar, one of China’s largest online travel sites, is planning to launch a low-cost airline based in Shenzhen.

The company confirmed this week that it will initially invest CNY600 million (US$92 million) in Shenhui Airlines, in partnership with another local firm in Shenzhen.

According to Qunar, the start-up carrier plans to take to the skies as early as in 2017. Shenhui Airlines will build a fleet of 12 aircraft by 2019, enabling it to operate domestic and international flights to destinations in Southeast Asia, Japan and South Korea.

The carrier will operate under a low-cost model, and Qunar plans to capitalise on its online expertise to drive sales.

Qunar is owned by Baidu, the Chinese online giant, and rival OTA Ctrip.com recently acquired a stake in the company. Shenhui Airlines will be based at Shenzhen’s Baoan International Airport, where will compete with three local rivals: Shenzhen Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Donghai Airlines.

Ctrip.com International has effectively acquired its rival, Qunar, following a share swap deal with Baidu.

Baidu has exchanged approximately 190 million shares in Qunar for almost 11.5 million Ctrip shares. This gives Baidu a 25% stake in Ctrip, while Ctrip takes a 45% stake in Qunar, resulting in the effective merger of two of China’s largest online travel companies.

Ctrip and Qunar will combine their products and services, according to a statement, while Baidu said it expects to “continue its existing business cooperation with Qunar”.

“We are excited by this transaction, which we believe will help build a healthy travel ecosystem in China,” said James Liang, chairman & CEO of Ctrip. “This milestone transaction will enable us to focus on providing the best travel products and services to our travellers. We believe this will create greater value to our customers, partners and shareholders in the future.”

“This transaction… creates value for our shareholders and demonstrates Baidu’s continuing commitment to online travel, an industry with tremendous potential ahead,” said Robin Li, chairman & CEO of Baidu. “We are happy with Qunar’s accomplishments, and we look forward to working with the leading players in the industry.”

This week’s deal marks the latest step in Ctrip’s efforts to dominate the China’s online travel sector. In May this year the Shanghai-based company acquired a 37.6% stake in another Chinese OTA, eLong. It also had an earlier bid for Qunar rejected.

It was also revealed this week that the Priceline Group has increased its stake in Ctrip to 12.6%, following an initial investment in the Chinese company in May.

去哪儿上市剑指携程 重构在线旅游格局 https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/qunaershangshijianzhixiechengzhonggouzaixianlvyougeju/ Mon, 14 Oct 2013 05:56:22 +0000 http://www.traveldailychina.com/?p=400 The post 去哪儿上市剑指携程 重构在线旅游格局 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Travel search site Skyscanner has formed a new partnership with China’s main search engine, Baidu.

While Baidu also owns a majority stake in Chinese travel search site Qunar, it has chosen Skyscanner as its partner for international flight searches. When a Baidu user searches for international flights, Skyscanner results will now automatically appear in the search controls. The user can then click through to the chosen airline to make a booking. In China, Skyscanner is known as Tianxun (tianxun.cn).

“We look forward to partnering with Baidu to provide the very best in travel search to their many users. Overall in Asia, we fully expect Skyscanner to grow to the size of our European business within a relatively short period and we are investing with this in mind,” said Gareth Williams, co-founder & CEO of Skyscanner.

The move coincides with the launch of Skyscanner’s first office in China. The company said its new Beijing premises would enable it to become “more closely related to China’s major airline players”. The office opening comes close to a year after Europe’s leading travel search site opened its first Asia Pacific office in Singapore. The company is now moving to a larger office in Singapore, as it aims to double its headcount over the next 12 months.

“The success of our strategy in China comes down to a few things, including our ability to localise website content for the Chinese user, optimising search engine keywords, conducting online marketing campaigns and, not insignificantly, building relationships with China’s leading airlines and online travel agents,” said Ewan Gray, Skyscanner’s Director for Asia Pacific.

China’s online travel sector is booming, with web-based bookings growing at more than double the rate of the overall travel market.

According to the latest edition of PhoCusWright’s ‘China Online Travel Overview’, the country’s total travel market is expected to double in size between 2008 and 2013, but the online travel will quintuple in size over the same five-year period.

In the fifth edition of its China study, entitled ‘The Giant Has Awoken’, PhoCusWright said that “surging demand for travel products, along with significant commitments to the online space by some of the country’s largest e-commerce and internet players are driving phenomenal growth in China’s travel industry”.

The report forecasts that travel bookings in China will surpass US$105 billion in 2013, of which more than US$15 billion will be online. The total online travel market in China will grow approximately 500% between 2008 and 2013 fuelled, according to the report, by “a range of high-profile investments and partnerships among the country’s leading internet and online travel firms”. These partnerships include Baidu, China’s main search engine, becoming the majority shareholder in Qunar, the leading travel search site.

“Online travel is hardly new in China, yet with such strong growth for the total travel market and rapidly changing consumer behaviour, online travel is experiencing the raw, meteoric growth we have typically seen only in nascent online markets,” says Douglas Quinby, Senior Director of Research at PhoCusWright.

“Online travel is also unfolding with the distinct characteristics of China’s unique internet landscape. It is shaped not only by online travel agencies and supplier websites, but also by the major media portals, social networks, online shopping malls, online payment challenges and the need for offline support and fulfillment,” he added.
