Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) reports its best year for tourism ever, welcoming a record 1.22 million overnight arrivals to the nature Emirate in 2023, up 8% on 2022 numbers and bolstered by a significant 24% year-on-year pick-up in international visitors.

The robust performance is underscored by RAKTDA’s strategic growth plans. From investment in tourism infrastructure, targeted initiatives to drive more visitors to the emirate, to developing an ecosystem rooted in sustainability, Ras Al Khaimah continues to reinforce its position as a destination of the future. Its key 2023 achievements include:

  • A 24% increase in international visitors, supported by over 2,200 international activities from roadshows, trade fairs to media events across 30 countries.
  • Cemented status as a business and social events hub with a 23% growth in MICE revenue and 103% increase in revenue from weddings.
  • Silver Certification under EarthCheck’s world-leading Sustainable Destinations programme – the only destination in the Middle East to receive this level of certification alongside more than 20 tourism partners from hotels and attractions.
  • Featured in CNN Travel’s best destinations to visit in 2023; Condé Nast Traveler’s best places to go in Asia 2024; Travel + Leisure India’s Forget Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah Is The Place To Be In The UAE; and Forbes’ Why You Should Visit Ras Al Khaimah Now.
  • Boosted international air connectivity with the introduction of direct flights with Qatar Airways, Indian carrier IndiGo’s, Smart Wings, Centrum Air and SmartLynx.
  • Launched borderless travel with Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group) for cross-destination tourism promotion and marketing initiatives, boosting visitor arrivals to Ras Al Khaimah and Musandam.
  • Debut of Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort with the start of 2024 and the reopening of Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah following an extensive refurbishment.
  • Staged multiple headline-grabbing events, including the 2023 WMF Minifootball World Cup, DP World Tour, RAK Half Marathon, Arab Aviation Summit, Exotic Wedding Planning Conference and the Global Citizen Forum.
  • Set two new Guinness World Record titles and attracted over 65,000 visitors at its 2024 New Year’s Eve fireworks and drone display.
  • RAKTDA was certified as a Great Place to Work® for the third consecutive year and ranked 4th in Best Workplaces in the Public Sector for the GCC in 2023.

Commenting on Ras Al Khaimah’s record-breaking 2023, Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, said: “It has been a great year for our Emirate, one that clearly set the groundwork for sustainable growth and development in Ras Al Khaimah.” He further added, “Despite global challenges that have impacted our industry, we remained agile and resilient as a tourism community, working together to deliver a destination offering that would resonate with our visitors and residents alike. From investing in infrastructure and staging world-class events to making our Emirate sustainable and accessible to all, Ras Al Khaimah is firmly on the path for continued success in 2024 and beyond.”

Delivering more visitors to Ras Al Khaimah

RAKTDA’s efforts to promote the Emirate to an even broader global audience paid dividends in 2023, delivering a 8% increase in total annual visitors to reach the 1.22 million milestone, supported by 24% boost in international visitors. Complementing this growth, hotel occupancy rate in the Emirate also saw a significant rise, with an impressive occupancy of 74%, marking a year-on-year growth of 12 percentage points.

With Ras Al Khaimah sharing its border with the Sultanate of Oman, RAKTDA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group) to pursue cross-destination tourism activities to benefit both destinations. The first-of-its-kind strategic partnership aims to position Ras Al Khaimah and Oman’s Musandam region as leading global tourism destinations in the Middle East, creating opportunities for travellers to visit both in a single trip.

Connecting the world to the Emirate

Increasing airlift into Ras Al Khaimah is crucial to achieving tourism arrivals goals and on November 1st 2023, the new Qatar Airways daily service to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport opened up the Emirate to a network of 160-plus destinations globally via the airline’s Doha hub.

With India, a major tourism source market for Ras Al Khaimah, particularly for leisure, incentives and weddings, IndiGo’s introduction of a direct service from Hyderabad, adding to its direct Mumbai flight, helped accelerate arrivals growth. Moving from air to sea connectivity, Ras Al Khaimah welcomed six calls by four luxury cruise liners in H1 and will receive 14 luxury cruise calls this 2023/2024 season, growing to 20 by 2025/2026 and 50 by 2030/2031, bringing in cruise passengers that will further increase arrivals figures.

Responsible tourism development
In 2023, the Emirate achieved Silver Certification under EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations program – a first in the Middle East. EarthCheck’s rigorous process involves monitoring and auditing across 10 sustainability indicators – from energy and water consumption to waste management, carbon footprint analysis and community engagement. Bolstering this initiative, RAKTDA launched its own sustainability certification programme for tourism businesses, Responsible RAK, with more than 20 hotels, attractions and tour operators having earned Responsible RAK Silver Certification to date.

The Emirate outperformed the baseline average in three significant areas, reporting a performance that was better by 23% in energy consumption with savings of 12.4 gigajoules since 2021, 29% in greenhouse gas emissions equating to a saving of 1.8 million tonnes of CO2, and 61% in waste output, leading to savings of 420 million litres since 2021.

More rooms drive visitor growth
Ras Al Khaimah’s fast-growing hotel portfolio is central to delivering more arrivals to the Emirate. In 2023, several new hospitality projects were announced including Nobu, Le Méridien, W Hotels, JW Marriott & Hilton on Al Marjan Island in addition to Nikki Beach on Mina Al Arab, representing over 1,800 keys in total. The destination also welcomed Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort, which fully opened its doors on 2nd January 2024 with 174 rooms, suites and villas, including the emirate’s first overwater villas. Additionally, the iconic Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah reopened following an extensive refurbishment, revealing revamped rooms and suites, new culinary experiences and a reimagined wellness and events spaces. Other upcoming hotel projects including Westin Resort (257 keys), Sofitel Al Hamra (292 keys), Rove Al Marjan Island (441 keys), Rotana Mangrove (258 keys) and Saij, A Mantis Collection Mountain Lodge (70 keys) are all set to open in the near future (2024/2025). Design details of the new USD $3.9 billion Wynn Al Marjan Island were also revealed, with the 1,500-key mega resort inspired by the seascape of Al Marjan’s four islands. The integrated resort will feature shopping, a gaming area, a state-of-the-art events centre, wellness and spa facilities, 24 dining and lounge experiences and extensive entertainment choices.

A fast-growing events hub and record breaker
Ras Al Khaimah continues to cement its status as a global hub for business and social events, and in 2023, witnessed 23% growth in MICE revenue and 103% increase in revenue from weddings. The Emirate also hosted several headline-grabbers including Arab Aviation Summit, Exotic Wedding Planning Conference (EWPC) and the Global Citizen Forum, DP World Tour, and the RAK Half Marathon. Its reputation as a leading sports events destination was boosted too when the 2023 WMF Minifootball World Cup kicked off in November, marking the tournament’s Middle East debut and attracting 32 national teams and 30,000-plus spectators.

Ras Al Khaimah also gained notoriety with its record-breaking 2024 New Year’s Eve extravaganza. An eight-minute-long firework and drone display set two new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ titles in a stunning spectacle that lit up the skies along 4.5km stretch of Ras Al Khaimah’s waterfront. The show made history, gaining titles for the ‘Longest chain of aquatic floating fireworks’ for a grand total of 5.8km and the ‘Longest straight-line drones display’ for a total length of 2km.

Ras Al Khaimah was awarded Silver Certification under EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destinations program – the world’s leading scientific benchmarking and certification program for tourism destinations. The emirate is the first destination in the Middle East to earn this level of recognition for sustainability.

The certification process is underpinned by EarthCheck’s in-depth scientific criteria and also involves meticulous monitoring, benchmarking, and auditing across 10 sustainability indicators – from energy and water consumption to waste management, carbon footprint analysis and community engagement.

Ras Al Khaimah’s sustainability certification is all the more significant considering the challenges posed by the region’s climate, calling for a more robust approach to managing energy and water consumption than most in order to meet EarthCheck’s stringent requirements. The Silver Certification comes just weeks out from the United Nations’ climate change conference COP28, being held in the UAE in late November. The conference agenda this year will focus on achieving the global emissions reduction target of 43% by 2030.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) Chief Executive Officer, Raki Phillips, said that achieving EarthCheck’s Silver Certification reinforced Ras Al Khaimah’s ambition to become the UAE’s and the region’s sustainable tourism leader by 2025. “This landmark achievement amplifies our commitment to sustainable, balanced, and purpose-driven tourism industry growth,” Phillips said.

“My gratitude goes out to our tourism community for their relentless dedication to achieving EarthCheck’s Silver Certification, which not only substantiates Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to sustainable tourism but also aligns with our ambitious goal of welcoming over three million visitors by 2030.”

EarthCheck founder and Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Moore, said Ras Al Khaimah’s Silver status would bolster and enhance its tourism industry and its business operators locally. “Congratulations to Ras Al Khaimah for being certified under EarthCheck’s Sustainable Destination program, and for being a part of EarthCheck’s Leading Destinations of the World Program™,” Moore said.

“The destination management commitments and sustainable tourism guidelines not only provide a strategic framework to drive and foster action across the community and industry, but they position Ras Al Khaimah as a regional leader in sustainable tourism. Embracing sustainable principles will ensure that Ras Al Khaimah’s unique environment and rich culture can be both fostered and protected as the tourism industry continues to grow. EarthCheck looks forward to being an active partner in this journey.”

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority has also launched its own sustainability certification program for tourism businesses, Responsible RAK. Over 20 tourism businesses are part of the program today. ResponsibleRAK is powered by EarthCheck’s science and data, ensuring businesses are measuring their environmental impact and taking real action.

Numerous Ras Al Khaimah tourism businesses, including hotels, attractions and tour operators have earned Responsible RAK Silver Certification. The list includes:

  • Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA)

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) in partnership with award-winning creative agency, Beautiful Destinations, harnesses the power of short-form video in a new landmark creative video campaign.

As a destination of the future, RAKTDA takes a fresh approach to the traditional media campaign with an experiential destination itinerary through short form video. Working with one of the world’s largest and most influential online travel communities of over 50 million followers on social media, Beautiful Destinations has masterminded some of the world’s most high profile and impactful video-led tourism campaigns for destination marketing organisations (DMOs) worldwide. In this latest partnership, 30 pieces of stunning vertical short-form video content have been created in engaging cinematic style, highlighting Ras Al Khaimah’s diverse experiences, to reach travel audiences through ‘real’, snackable content, inspiring travellers as they begin their research, which is increasingly starting – and staying – on social media.

Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, said: “We try to stay on the cusp of the traveler journey and tap into the visceral nature of tourism. By harnessing the power of short form video with Beautiful Destinations, we effectively trigger inspiration and emotion far quicker and more impactfully than other, more traditional, marketing tools. We welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors in first six months in 2023 – a 14.8% increase from the same time last year, so now is the perfect time to accelerate our destination marketing offering with the global trailblazers in travel content creation.”

Jeremy Jauncey, Founder and CEO of Beautiful Destinations said: “Ras Al Khaimah is a case study on why visual storytelling is so impactful for destination marketing. Through this partnership with RAKTDA, we succinctly captured the sheer breadth of the emirate, through stunning landscapes, nature and experiences creating the kind of content that consumers today want to see. Beautiful Destinations is thrilled to be the partner for this campaign, and I am looking forward to seeing the results of the powerful short-form content we have created together.”

Short-form video is increasingly becoming the most influential form of travel media– not only for Gen Z but also older generations with as much as 40% of over 30s looking to TikTok first for travel inspiration. According to research, 87% of millennials are inspired by social media when booking travel and 97% post about trips daily, making it a key tool for travel research and influencing decision-making. Short form video has more virality, with entertaining and participatory content performing the best, and, vitally, delivering the highest return on investment. Due to this seismic shift in how consumers are conducting research online, some of the world’s biggest brands – including the likes of Google – are moving to adapt to this growing trend making online search a more visual and engaging experience with vertical video platforms.

This always-on campaign in partnership with Beautiful Destinations is live across RAKTDA’s leading markets across three phases with different themes: Mountain Adventures, What to do in RAK and Desert Beyond the Dunes (November 2023). The campaign aims to drive brand affinity and consideration in key markets, as well as increase awareness in new territories through ‘showing’, rather than ‘telling’ potential visitors what awaits them in Ras Al Khaimah.

Known as the Nature Emirate, Ras Al Khaimah is a one-stop destination for fun, family, nature, adventure, with a wealth of captivating attractions to experience and explore, which come to life in this latest campaign. Moreover, it cements Ras Al Khaimah as a regional leader in responsible, sustainable tourism, focusing on the environment, culture, conservation and liveability.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) announces a record-breaking first six months, with the Emirate reporting its highest ever half-year arrival numbers.

The impressive performance saw Ras Al Khaimah welcome 600K visitors between January and June 2023, a total increase of 14.8% versus H1 2022 and the highest ever tourism-related revenue achieved for a half-year period.

Reinforcing its position as a destination of the future, the results follow a series of strategic investments, partnerships and initiatives to boost tourism, setting a path for continued growth in 2023 and beyond.

First half achievements include:

  • International tourism rebound accounting for over 52% of all visitor arrivals to the destination
  • Took a step closer to becoming the regional leader in sustainable tourism by 2025, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority achieved Silver Certification, becoming the first EarthCheck certified tourism board in the Middle East
  • Expanded its aviation strategy by partnering with Qatar Airways to leverage its 150+ country global network to provide direct access to the Emirate
  • Signed an agreement with FTI GROUP, one of Europe’s leading outbound tour operators, to drive inbound traffic from Germany and increase visitation from one of the Emirate’s top five visitor source markets
  • Unveiled the design vision for the USD $3.9 billion Wynn Al Marjan Island, the largest foreign direct tourism investment project, set to open in early 2027
  • Significant increase in demand (room nights) with year-on-year growth of +33.6%, thanks to the addition of new hotel brands in the Emirate in 2022
  • Announced the addition of Earth Hotels, Le Meridien and Nobu Hotels to its growing hotel portfolio, with plans to double the number of guest rooms over the coming years – one of the highest growth rates in the reigion
  • Received six calls by four luxury cruise liners, welcoming over 2,500 passengers and crew
  • Increased MICE room nights by 26% vs. H1 2022 driven by international incentive groups
  • Hosted several key events including the 16th edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, Arab Aviation Summit, DP World Tour and Exotic Wedding Planners Conference (EWPC)
  • Held the official draw for the region’s first ever WMF Minifootball World Cup, taking place from October 26th to November 4th
  • Introduced civil law marriage licenses, and new wedding incentive and certification programmes to bolster the Emirate’s position as a wedding destination
  • Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, named one of Forbes Middle East’s Top 100 Travel & Tourism Leaders and Businessperson of the Year by Arabian Business earlier this year
  • Launched ‘Get More’, a brand-new digital-first summer campaign, which generated more than half a billion impressions and over 2.5 million clicks, exceeding industry benchmarks.

“2023 is shaping up to be the Emirate’s best year to date, with our first half results proving the efficacy of moving fast, staying relevant and just getting things done,” said Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority. “It’s essential we remain agile and continue to develop Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism offering and create diverse and inspiring experiences for all. We have big ambitions and are confident that we will exceed our targets for 2023”.

Strong June performance
The impressive half-year figures follow a strong June performance in which the Emirate welcomed over 102,900 visitor arrivals, representing a 39.6% increase versus June 2022. Tourism related revenue also grew by 64.7%, while occupancy and Average Daily Rate (ADR) saw an uplift of 33.2% and 6.7% respectively.

Leading in responsible tourism
On a mission to not only protect its natural assets, but also engage the growing cohort of responsible travellers, the Authority has set its sights on the Emirate becoming a regional leader in Sustainable Tourism by 2025. Key to achieving this goal is its Sustainable Tourism Strategy Implementation Plan – Responsible RAK, created in partnership with EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification, and advisory group for travel and tourism. This involves collecting clean data from hotels and attractions against 10 performance metrics, from carbon offsets to landfill diversion, gender parity to Emirati employment, in order to assess where they are on their sustainability journey and establish actions to help them progress. Over 20 tourism businesses in the Responsible RAK program are expected to achieve Silver Certification by the second half of 2023. Recently, the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority was awarded Silver Certification, making it the first EarthCheck certified tourism authority in the region.

Enhancing global connectivity to the Emirate
Primed to deliver significant progress against the Emirate’s vision, the Authority announced new Qatar Airways daily flights to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, starting from 1st November 2023. Opening up one of the largest global networks of 150+ destinations, the new flights will provide a tourism boost for the nature Emirate and further strengthen its position as a destination of the future. Significantly strengthening air connectivity between Germany and the Emirate, the Authority also inked a new partnership with FTI GROUP, one of Europe’s leading outbound tour operators, paving the way for the launch of twice-weekly flights from Munich to the Emirate from mid-October onwards.  In a further boost to its visitor growth targets, Ras Al Khaimah received six calls by four luxury cruise liners in H1, including Azamara Quest, one of the largest ships ever to arrive in the Emirate. Another key feat was receiving both the Emerald Azzurra and super mega-yacht The World (Residences at Sea) on the same day – a historical moment for the Emirate’s burgeoning cruise sector. Ras Al Khaimah has already confirmed 14 luxury cruise calls for next season and expects to welcome 20 by 2025/2026 and 50 by 2030/2031.

Boosting its hospitality offering
Another key driver of the northern Emirate’s rising visitor numbers is the continued expansion of its hotel portfolio. Ras Al Khaimah announced the addition of Nobu Al Marjan Island (300 keys) in 2026, Westin Resort (257 keys) in 2024, Le Méridien Al Marjan Island Resort (350 keys) and Earth Shore Al Marjan Island (265 keys) in 2025. With Anantara Mina Al Arab (174 keys) and Sofitel Al Hamra (300 keys) set to open this year plus several other global names in the near future, the Emirate plans to double the number of keys over the coming years. This includes the largest-of-its-kind foreign direct investment, the USD $3.9 billion Wynn Al Marjan Island, which is set to transform and accelerate the Emirate’s rise as a major global tourist destination. The integrated resort’s design vision was unveiled earlier this year and will include 1,500+ rooms, suites and villas, shopping, gaming area, a state-of-the-art events center, wellness and spa facilities, 24 dining and lounge experiences and extensive entertainment choices.

Driving tourism through MICE
Ras Al Khaimah also focused on the fast-growing MICE market in H1 as part of its diversification strategy. Indicating a successful push to attract international markets for incentive groups with longer stays versus local corporate groups that tend to only stay for a couple of nights, the destination saw a 26% increase in MICE rooms nights compared to the same period in 2022. It also hosted several major events between January and June 2023, including the RAK Half Marathon, Arab Aviation Summit, DP World Tour and Exotic Wedding Planning Conference (EWPC).

Further establishing the Emirate as a unique and attractive wedding destination, the Authority chose EWPC as its platform to introduce an all-new Wedding Certification Programme that will enable seamless, quick, and easy wedding planning in Ras Al Khaimah. In H1 2023, Ras Al Khaimah saw a 300% increase in revenue from weddings which is expected to continue to grow into H2 with the launch of the programme in September. Those certified through the new Wedding Certification Programme will benefit from added ease and flexibility in obtaining necessary licenses, organising events, and gaining valuable business support from certified hotels via an e-portal. Planners will also gain a deeper understanding of the UAE’s civil marriage process, receive fast-tracked permits, and have access to a network of resources to help them confidently navigate through local regulations, including a curated portfolio of unique venues. Never before has a tourism destination introduced such ease and flexibility for wedding planners and couples. In parallel, the Authority also announced a series of comprehensive incentive packages for couples, wedding planners, and certified venues.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and the FTI GROUP one of  Europe’s leading outbound tour operators, have struck a new agreement that paves the way for the launch of twice-weekly flights from Munich to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in the fourth quarter of this year.

The agreement, which was signed by Raki Phillips, Chief Executive Officer of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority and Ralph Schiller, CEO of the FTI GROUP ranked among the headline announcements on day one of the Arab Aviation Summit, which is currently being staged at Al Hamra International Exhibition & Conference Centre in Ras Al Khaimah. It will significantly expand air connectivity between Ras Al Khaimah and Germany, one of the emirate’s top five visitor source markets for many years.

Germany ranks among the global tourism industry’s most important outbound source markets and is projected to account for almost 118 million travellers annually by 2024, according to a recent report published by GlobalData.

“This agreement with the FTI GROUP marks a major milestone in Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism development strategy, as we look to drive inbound traffic from Germany, which counts among our fastest-growing visitor source markets,” commented Raki Phillips, Chief Executive Officer of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.

“In 2022, we’ve experienced 81% growth in German visitors to Ras Al Khaimah compared to the previous year, and the addition of twice-weekly direct flights from Munich, one of the country’s most important aviation hubs, should see this number grow substantially. In fact, our robust relationships with all leading trade partners in Germany will all play a key role in reaching our target of 3 million visitors annually by 2030, while boosting tourism’s GDP contribution from 5% today to almost a third of Ras Al Khaimah’s economy in the near future.”

The FTI GROUP is a major player in Germany’s tourism sector, accounting for a 15% share of the market and US$4 billion turnover in FY2021/22. It has agreements with more than 10,000 partner travel agencies in Germany, making it an important strategic partner in support of RAKTDA’s visitor growth targets.

Ralph Schiller, CEO of FTI GROUP commented: “The signing of this agreement significantly strengthens our partnership with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority and aligns with our business development plans by boosting outbound tourism to the Emirate. With this long-term partnership, we are contributing to Ras Al Khaimah’s growth story. We look forward to the great future that lies ahead of Ras Al Khaimah and are excited to be a part of it.”

The announcement of the expanded partnership with the FTI GROUP coincides with the signing of an agreement also announced at the Arab Aviation Summit between the tourism authority and Qatar Airways that will see the Qatari flag carrier launch direct daily flights to Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, commencing 1 November. Both agreements reinforce RAKTDA’s strategy designed to boost inbound tourism by enhancing global air connectivity to the Emirate.

Recognised by Time magazine as one of the World’s Greatest Places of 2022 and CNN Travel’s best destinations to visit in 2023 for its stunning, unique topography and geodiversity, Ras Al Khaimah offers a myriad of authentic, diverse and inspiring experiences for every kind of traveller – perfect for those looking for adventure, nature, family fun and more.

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has announced new dates for the next PATA Annual Summit. Originally scheduled to take place live and in-person in March, the forum will now be held from October 25-27 in Ras Al Khaimah. The event will be the first time that the not-for-profit travel trade association, the largest spanning Asia-Pacific, will host its annual summit in the Middle East.

Hosted by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), the three-day event brings together international thought leaders, industry shapers and senior decision-makers who are invested in driving tourism to, from and within the Asia Pacific.

The event, comprised of conference presentations, leadership task force sessions, workshops, PATA board meetings and a travel mart component, will be hosted in various locations across the Emirate, including the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert and Al Hamra International Exhibition & Conference Centre.

Exploring the theme ‘Reconnecting the World’, the program will provide a platform for public and private sector members and partners to convene on critical industry topics, including destination recovery strategies, sustainability and resilience, human capital development, women in travel and innovation.

“We are delighted that we will still be organising the PATA Annual Summit in Ras Al Khaimah this year and bring together our industry network to discuss opportunities and best practices to enable recovery and sustainable growth,” said PATA chief executive, Liz Ortiguera. “The team is working hard to put together an event programme, under the theme ‘Reconnecting the World,’ that will take on a format that is more experiential and will maximise in-person connections and engage an appreciation for this destination.”

With over 7,000 years of fascinating history, traditions and culture, Ras Al Khaimah promises an authentic and easily accessible Arabian experience.

Raki Phillips, chief executive of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, added: “As we navigate through a new era of travel and tourism, platforms such as the Pacific Asia Travel Association Summit provide invaluable insights that help guide our industry moving forward.”

RAKTDA - Destination Strategy

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has launched its new Destination Strategy 2019-2021 to further drive tourism growth.

With robust visitor demand, solid partnerships, and successful product launches executed over the past few years — RAKTDA is on a mission to solidify its position as the fastest growing tourism destination in the region.

The new Destination Strategy 2019-2021 is set to implement best practices as per international standards to fuel a sustainable tourism-driven economic growth in Ras Al Khaimah.

RAKTDA - Destination Strategy

The new programme will focus on diversifying the Emirates’ tourism offering to attract a wider segment of tourists. It aims to accelerate foreign and local investments within the tourism sector, nurture home-grown small and medium enterprises to create further employment and business opportunities, and prioritise sustainable and authentic cultural experiences.

“The next level”

Haitham Mattar, CEO of RAKTDA said: “Our Tourism Strategy 2019-2021 is a comprehensive three-year programme that takes Ras Al Khaimah to the next level.  We’re delighted with the success our offering has had in our target markets to date, but with the new destination strategy, we aim to diversify and enhance visitors’ experiences through differentiated product development. Another area of focus for us will be positioning and promoting Ras Al Khaimah in targeted international markets to attract higher yield customers all year round”.

RAKTDA - Destination Strategy

One of Ras Al Khaimah’s key growth milestones in 2018 was the launch of Jebel Jais Flight — the world’s longest zip line on Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE. Another key factor in the growing popularity of the Emirates was a calendar of world-class events and the increase in international partnerships. Ras Al Khaimah has also identified the supply of new hotel rooms as a major focus to support the increasing popularity of the destination.

Over the next three years RAKTDA will continue to create offerings to attract close to 1.5 million visitors by 2021, and 3 million visitors by 2025.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has announced its partnership with the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

RAKTDA, an organisation created to develop and promote the Emirate’s tourism infrastructure and potential, partnered with AITO for an initiative called Project PROTECT (People, Resources Outreach, Tourism, Environment, Conservation, Tomorrow).

Project PROTECT was created by AITO and the University of Surrey to help encourage and guide members to adopt better practices in sustainable tourism and to focus on environmental protection. All 120 AITO members are committed to making travel more sustainable; their ethos is that “those who live in the places their customers visit should benefit directly from tourism”.

As per the agreement, RAKTDA will become its official sustainable Tourism Sponsor for 2018-2019.

“A core pillar that is crucial for a thriving tourism industry”

Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, commented: “Ras Al Khaimah boasts an abundance of natural assets and a rich cultural heritage which offers a compelling destination for visitors seeking authentic culture and nature-based Arabian experiences.

“Our Destination Strategy for the Emirate incorporates Sustainable Tourism as a core pillar that is crucial for a thriving tourism industry and involves multiple facets from the protection of the environment, promotion of eco-tourism, to the preservation of local heritage and job creation. This partnership with AITO is an effective way of further engaging tour operator partners and travellers in an initiative that will deliver meaningful and measurable impact.”

AITO provides its members with guidelines stating that travel must benefit host communities, respect local cultures, protect the environment and conserve natural resources. The group will be holding its annual overseas conference in Ras Al Khaimah from 22-25 November 2018, where members will be able to see and hear first-hand about the sustainability work being carried out in the Emirate.

“From a sustainability perspective”

AITO’s chairman, Derek Moore, added: “It’s time destinations led the travel industry in assessing and monitoring the impact of travel from a sustainability perspective. Special interest travellers such as AITO member clients help considerably in this area as they disperse beyond the main tourist areas to lesser-known regions in pursuit of their experiences.”

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) announced the opening of its first international representation office in the Nordics in a move to strengthen ties with the region.

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the Emirates. It offers culturally-driven sites, a feel of the old world, and yet it also offers modern attractions for the younger generation such as supercar adventures, concerts, golf challenges, and the world’s longest zip line.

In 2017, approximately 18,000 Nordic visitors stayed in the Emirate, either on holiday or on business visits. But in the first quarter of 2018, RAK attracted almost 10,000 visitors – an increase of 26.2% when compared to the same period of 2017. The countries in the region consist of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, including their associated regions of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Aland Islands.

As the Emirates seek to drive its tourism sector, RAKTDA has opened its seventh international representation office. While it already has offices in Saudi Arabia, UK, Russia and Germany, the new office, which opened last April in Copenhagen, Denmark, is now one of the most important economic, transportation and communication centres in the region.

“The Nordic market is one of the fastest growing sectors”

Announcing the opening of the new office, RAKTDA CEO, Haitham Mattar said: “The Nordic market is one of the fastest growing sectors and last year it ranked in our top ten source markets for visitors.

“Already in 2018, we have seen growth in year-on-year figures up 26.2% in the first quarter. The opening of the Copenhagen office provides an important resource to grow visitors from the Nordic countries and for our partners in the Emirate to access this market.”

The strategy comes with a marketing plan, and representing the office is United Spirit Nordic, a Copenhagen-based PR and marketing agency. The agency aims to establish relationships with Nordic travel trade, to offer a reliable, efficient, pro-active, and hands-on team to maximise the overall goal of increasing visitor figures, length of stay and spend per person.

In addition, the new office will support the tourism body’s promotional activities and trade partnerships, to penetrate the regions high potential outbound market. A team of dedicated trade promotion, MICE and business development staff will manage various in-market promotions and initiatives to drive further awareness of Ras Al Khaimah, as a multi-faceted business and leisure destination.

RAKTDA is targeting 1 million tourists by the end of 2018 as part of its Vision 2019 tourism strategy and the Nordic region is on high priority.

Just a heads up to bucket list tourists and thrill-seekers everywhere: Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records to have the longest zip-line in the world!

Located over 1,680m (1.68km) above sea level, Jebel Jais Flight recently opened on the UAE side of the Al Hajar mountain range after more than a year of planning, construction and testing. At 2.83 km – the equivalent to over 28 soccer fields and spanning the entire Jebel Jais peak’s chasm – with a cable weighing more than 6 tons, no less than HH Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, ruler and Supreme Council member of Ras Al Khaimah received the ‘world’s longest zip-line certification’ from Hoda Khachab, official adjudicator of Guinness World Records.

Guinness World Records MENA country manager Talal Omar applauded the record-breaking destination launched by the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA). “We have witnessed countless achievements in the Middle East, and as the global authority on record-breaking we are always proud to be a part of such great feats every day,” he said. “The certification event for Jebel Jais Flight highlights an extraordinary attraction that now puts Ras Al Khaimah with UAE as a global primary destination.”

“This is a great achievement for Ras Al Khaimah’s international tourism ambitions,” said RAKTDA CEO Haitham Mattar. “We are now receiving our largest-ever number of visitor arrivals and are expecting to see an increasing number of adventure tourists coming from across the globe to try this bucket list experience.”

Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Hoda Khachab hands over the world’s longest zip-line certification for Jebel Jais Flight to HH Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah

Jebel Jais Flight uses measures to keep adventure enthusiasts safe and secure. Zip-line riders must gear up with special suits and equipment before they are lifted up and made to ‘fly’ headfirst in the ‘Superman’ position. Timed to last roughly three minutes, they arrive on a suspended landing platform unique to Jebel Jais Flight. From here they return to solid ground through a second line, measuring 1km. No age restrictions apply, but riders must be at least 120 cm tall and weigh between 45 to 150 kg.

Adrenaline junkies will be thrilled to know that Jebel Jais Flight operations are handled by Toro Verde, the global zip-line authority. Toro Verde COO Ricardo Lizano shared, “Toro Verde brings to Ras Al Khaimah immense zipline management experience earned through previous projects in Central and South America, including Toro Verde Puerto Rico – the ‘Monster’ which, at 2.2 km, previously held the zip-line record now claimed by this ambitious emirate.”

“The Jebel Jais Flight will cement Jebel Jais as the adventure tourism hub of the Middle East” – Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority

Toro Verde Ras Al Khaimah CEO Jorge Jorge said, “The zip-line actually comprises two main cables, allowing friends and family members to experience and race together, adding to the fun and competitiveness of the facility. While the time and speed they complete the flight in depends on weight and weather conditions, the whole experience is expected to last around two to three minutes, with top speeds reaching between 120km and 150km per hour.”

How does RAK plan to recoup its Jebel Jais Flight investment, which runs up to nearly US$6 million? Jorge had an answer for this: “The whole experience costs AED650 (approximately US$177) per head. We anticipate the attraction accommodating a rider every five minutes on the two zip-lines, equating to roughly 200 people per day and around 100,000 per year. We also believe we can operate during the summer months, given that Jebel Jais is traditionally 10 degrees cooler than average UAE temperatures.”

Taking advantage of the rugged Al Hajar mountains within its territory, the Ras Al Khaimah emirate is building up Jebel Jais into its flagship adventure and activity tourism product. In line with its Vision 2019 Destination Tourism strategy to promote Ras Al Khaimah as an ‘authentic, accessible Arabian experience’ beyond beaches and desert dunes, RAKTDA plans to integrate Jebel Jais Flight with the Jebel Jais Via Ferrata (Iron Path) adventure tour that was opened in late 2017 to walkers, hikers and cyclists. Besides adding more zip-lines to Jebel Jais Flight, the tourism board will open a viewing deck park with a multi-purpose events area and food truck zone close to the mountain’s summit.

Ras Al Khaimah reported a 23% increase in visitors from India during the first six months of 2016 compared to the corresponding January-June period last year, according to the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA).

The positive growth trend during 2016 ranks India as the third largest international source market for the UAE’s most northern emirate – up from fourth last year.

“Our new brand positioning emphasises Ras Al Khaimah’s natural assets, luxurious indulgence, range of activities for different types of travellers and authentic Arabian heritage and culture – our diverse destination pillars resonate well with Indian travellers,” said Haitham Mattar, CEO, RAKTDA.

In line with the emirate’s international promotional strategy, RAKTDA recently attended July’s MICE India and Luxury Travel Congress (MILT) in Mumbai, the latest stop in a series of roadshows and familiarisation trips with Indian travel trade partners in the first six months of 2016.

The promotional programme in India has targeted the country’s swelling MICE and luxury market, which has witnessed tremendous growth in outbound corporate travel in recent years as more and more corporates recognise the importance of MICE activities as a key driver to engage internal and external customers.

“The constant increase in visitor arrivals from India is the direct result of strategic in-market trade missions and industry partnerships to boost market awareness of Ras Al Khaimah’s MICE and leisure offerings, highlight the destination’s diverse tourism proposition and forge smart partnerships with potential buyers,” added Mattar.

“We’ve engaged close to 500 of India’s leading trade stakeholders to promote the destination as an ideal choice for the country’s business and leisure travel trade and these activities will continue in the second half of 2016.”

With RAKTDA projecting further growth from the Indian source market as part of its target to attract one million visitors to the emirate by the end of 2018, Mattar highlighted the emirate’s close proximity to Dubai – a long-standing destination of choice for Indian tourists – has proven a key factor in making Ras Al Khaimah an attractive destination.

“Ras Al Khaimah is only a 45-minute drive from Dubai; our stunning natural landscapes, unspoilt beaches and culture, world-class hotels and resorts and abundant adventure activities are easily accessible,” said Mattar. “We’re seeing a surge in domestic and international interest in Ras Al Khaimah as a multi-purpose destination for leisure, business, events and weddings.”

Ras Al Khaimah recorded a double digit growth in visitor numbers and guest nights during Eid Al Fitr compared to the corresponding period last year, according to figures released by the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), which develops the emirate’s tourism infrastructure and oversees its domestic and overseas promotions.

Overview of Ras Al Khaimah
Overview of Ras Al Khaimah

The latest figures released by RAKTDA reveal the emirate attracted 16,636 hotel guests during the July Eid weekend, generating 30,220 guest nights. These numbers represent 10.7% and 17.4% increases, respectively, on the same period in 2015.

“Ras Al Khaimah has positioned itself as a destination of choice for those across the Globe and these results are a strong indication of the appeal of the emirate for travellers,” Haitham Mattar, CEO, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority said.

Recognised as one of the region’s fastest growing destinations, the RAKTDA figures show record growth across key indicators including hotel guests, room revenues, F&B revenues and occupancy rates.

Hotel occupancy during Eid Al Fitr reached 86.6%, 10.6% higher than in 2015 (78.5%), while RevPar grew by 12.7% over the same period.

“Ras Al Khaimah is a year-round tourist destination, and we have worked closely with our industry partners to promote the emirate’s offering and optimise visitation during the summer months and beyond. In addition to our great beaches and resorts, one of our key attractions is Jebel Jais, the tallest mountain in the UAE, which provides temperatures 10 degrees cooler than found at sea level and is ideal for outdoor sports and adventure, camping and picnicking.

“As well as mountain and adventure activities, summer visitors can partake in night time golf, relax and rejuvenate in a range of luxury spas, enjoy world class hotel facilities for all ages, and engage in numerous authentic Arabian experiences across the emirate, or go star gazing at the Banyan Tree Al Wadi.”

The UAE market continues to be an important source market for Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism growth. More than half (56%) of guests staying in the emirate during Eid Al Fitr were UAE residents. Indian, Egyptian, British and German visitors are in the top five source markets during the festive weekend, totalling 18.5% of total guests.
