“At age 20, we worry about what others think of us. At age 40, we don’t care what they think of us. At age 60, we discover they haven’t been thinking of us at all,” says one of Ann Landers’ famous quotes.

Saga Cruises commissioned a research to find out travel trends of different age groups and it found out that that older people are more care-free and significantly less self-conscious than today’s Gen Zs. Just 22% of over 50s said they cared what others think about them, compared to 70% of people aged 18-24 worrying about these matters.

With their “been-there-done-that” attitude and outlook in life, baby boomers are more likely to try new experiences than the younger generation. Older people think that they are running out of time and would like to try different things while they still can.

The research also reveals how both over 50s and 18-24 year olds share the desire to try new things – both in their social life as well as with holiday choices – with almost a third saying they regularly step out of their comfort zone. However, it was the older respondents that displayed a less conformist attitude than younger ones.

Saga releases the research results on the day of the Naming Ceremony of Spirit of Discovery, the Kent company’s new boutique cruise ship.  Nigel Blanks, COO of Saga Cruises said: “This desire to try new things comes as no surprise to us. Our guests have told us that they want colour and experiences, their life is not beige.  They have asked us to challenge them, to take them to exciting and adventurous places and help them experience something new. With our new boutique cruise ship, Spirit of Discovery, we are doing just that. This ship is a game changer for us and our guests, we have tried to deliver the wow factor at every turn and fill the ship with elements that people would not expect from Saga.”

Saga Cruises has revealed a new set of artist’s impressions for its second new ship Spirit of Adventure, scheduled to set sail in the summer of 2020.

Adding a ‘sense of occasion’ to the boutique luxury ship’s bold styling, Saga Cruises announced the Spirit of Adventure’s revamped look. The interior designers at London design agency AD Associates have created an eclectic feel with big-scale patterns, sumptuous fabrics and striking colour themes.

“The best of British contemporary design”

Nicola Preece, AD’s design director, said: “The interiors will embody the best of British contemporary design. The approach is bold and adventurous, eclectic, and with carefully curated use of colour, offering variation, big scale patterns and a layered palette.”

The ship’s refreshed leisure spaces include The Britannia Lounge with new furniture pieces; The Supper Club with walls made from glass and brass trim colonnades which act as screens; The Grill with bold floor-to-ceiling artwork; and The Spa with a new patina bronzed metal finish reception desk and bespoke concertina artwork as a backdrop.

Saga’s purpose-built cruise ship Spirit of Adventure is the second of two new passenger ships being constructed at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenberg, Germany. It is planned to enter service in 2020 while her sister ship Spirit of Discovery will begin her inaugural season on 10 July 2019.

Spirit of Discovery is not just the name of Saga Cruises’ new ship, it is also the philosophy of the new cruise departing from Dover on 17 August 2019 and sailing around the Baltic, weaving a course through the islands that surround Stockholm.

Tours include canoeing at the ‘Gateway to Lapland’ Kemi, river-rafting adventure in Luleå to experience Sweden’s Arctic Lapland or travelling aboard a river cruiser through the Finnish countryside before sightseeing in Pori by road train.

The new excursion to Skagen, which is known for its wild scenery that attracts painters and artists from around the world, is also included. Visits to art galleries and the studio of artist Peder Munk Ravn are included; guests can also participate in watercolour lessons on board. Moreover, they can enjoy the performance of Jools Holland aboard the ship.

“Our guests are… hugely independent and well-travelled”

Neil Cron, shore excursion manager, said: “While many of our guests opt to join our exciting range of tours, many are hugely independent and well-travelled so once the gangway is lowered in port they are keen to jump ashore to discover a region.

“The Explore Ashore team has been created to help guests make the most out of a destination – so if picnicking on Yyteri Beach in Finland sounds fun they can help plan the perfect day from booking a return taxi to organising a packed lunch or giving advice on hiking routes and ‘must-see’ attractions.”

Spirit of Discovery will cruise for 15 nights and costs GBP 4,984 (USD 6,533) with calls to Skagen, Denmark; Stockholm (overnight mooring) and Luleå, Sweden; Kemi and Pori, Finland and Fredikstad, Norway.

Price includes UK travel package to and from Dover, all meals and entertainment, choice of table wines at lunch and dinner, afternoon tea, 24-hour room service, welcome cocktail party, unlimited tea and coffee in selected venues, wifi, onboard gratuities, porterage and free shuttle bus to nearest town centre (whenever possible and when the ship is berthed more than 500 yards away).

However, excursions mentioned are optional, at an additional cost, and are subject to availability and change. Some of the highlights detailed may only be seen on optional excursions or by exploring independently.

Saga Cruises has confirmed plans to extend its fleet of new build ships with a second new cruise ship.

Spirit of Adventure is expected to be delivered in Summer 2020, joining the Spirit of Discovery which sails in July 2019.

Both ships will be built by the Meyer Werft shipyard.

Spirit of Adventure will be a sister ship to Spirit of Discovery and similar in external design, carrying less than 1,000 passengers with balconies for all cabins.

Lance Batchelor, chief executive officer, Saga plc who announced the decision at the company’s interim results said:

“Our first new ship, Spirit of Discovery, will be in service in June 2019 and with pre-sales being very strong, this confidence in demand has supported our decision to expand the new build fleet and purchase our second new ship, to be delivered in August 2020.”

Robin Shaw, chief executive, Saga Cruises, said: “Our loyal customers have played a key role in the design process for our first new build ship ‘Spirit of Discovery’. To date almost 7,000 passengers, who had pre-registered to sail on her have already gone on to book one of our new itineraries. This is a phenomenal conversion of over 80%.

Thanks to this strong demand, the desire of Saga members to keep doing the things they love and the forecast growth in the cruise industry, I am absolutely delighted that we are today confirming that we have now agreed to build a second new ship, ‘Spirit of Adventure’ for delivery in Summer 2020. This is an incredibly exciting time for Saga cruises and I am immensely proud of my team, both onboard and ashore, and the customers that will continue to help shape the look and feel of our future fleet.”

The 58,250 GT vessel will be approx. 236 metres long, 31.2 metres wide with a planned completion date of Summer 2020.

Saga Cruises have announced that their new ship will be named “Spirit of Discovery”. It will be delivered in Summer 2019 and will be built by the renowned Meyer Werft shipyard.

The new ship will carry less than 1,000 passengers, retaining the intimacy and personal touch for which Saga is renowned and will have more than 100 cabins for solo travellers, 20% of the ships capacity.

Robin Shaw, chief executive, Saga Cruises, said “We have great pleasure in announcing our new ship will be named “Spirit of Discovery”.

“In September 2015 we announced that we were to build our first cruise ship – we’re still on a high from that news. With the design nearing completion, today’s announcement is the next step on this exciting journey. The name “Spirit of Discovery” evokes the adventurous nature and new experiences that cruise customers desire.

“Key to the whole design process has been our customer insight. We know they want to experience new things in a luxurious, small ship environment. Our new ship’s itineraries will take customers to fresh, new destinations and will include more overnight stays in key ports.”

This year Saga Cruises celebrates its 20th anniversary. Saga has to date operated previously owned ships which have been re-fitted to meet the needs of their customers.

Saga Cruises has released artist’s impressions of its new ship which will be launched in summer 2019.

The thoughts and recommendations of passengers have been incorporated into the design and the sleek ship will carry fewer than 1,000 passengers and feature 540 all-balcony cabins.

Some 20% of the accommodation will be for solo travellers, with a choice of single cabin grades.

Features will include single-sitting dining in a choice of speciality restaurants, a selection of bars, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a library, an observation lounge and signature Britannia Lounge.

The cabins will be a real showcase says new build director David Pickett. He said: “The all-balcony cabins will be spacious and modern, designed with a fresh and contemporary twist.

Internal impression 17 02 17

“In fact, the whole ship has the ‘wow’ factor. It is being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, in Hamburg, and at the moment we’re heavily focused on technical design, the engine, generator and propulsion plant; everything to make sure we deliver a practical, working ship of the highest specification.”

“We are scheduled to lay the first block in late summer 2018. Just over a year away!”

Pickett says the Britannia Lounge is his favourite feature of the ship. He said: “The Britannia Lounge is going to be a magnificent signature space set across two decks. I know how important this area will be to our loyal guests, so we’ve worked hard to ensure it doesn’t disappoint.

“It’s been our aim to listen to current passengers during consultations and get as many of their wants and desires into the new ship while future-proofing the build, so it can operate for many, many years ahead.”

TV celebrity chef Rustie Lee will be cooking up a recipe for laughter when she sails on Saga Pearl II’s all-inclusive Grand Caribbean Adventure cruise this November.

Rustie, who has also a cabaret background, will be singing and baking her way through lively cookery demonstrations aboard the 449-passenger ship.

Master baker Rustie says there will be ‘fun, fun, fun’ all way.

She said: “I love people so I will be making sure there’s lots of audience interaction while I am cooking. We’re going to have a lot of fun together; I’m a joker and I want everyone to join in – for a start, they’ve got to try my Caribbean cocktails!

“I won’t be cooking up anything too spicy, but there will be lots of new ideas for passengers to take home. I’m a generous cook – I don’t go for little bits of meat or tiny measures; I trained in food production so I cater for lots of people.

“I may also whip up some cakes as we’re all talking baking at the moment.”

Rustie, who was born in Portland, Jamaica, moved to Birmingham in the late 1950s. She says she does not get back to the Caribbean enough so when the opportunity came up she was delighted to join the Saga cruise.

She said: “I was so pleased, so really pleased because I love to be in the Caribbean, in the sunshine and on a cruise. I haven’t been to Trinidad and Tobago, it’s the home of the carnival, so I can’t wait to sail in.

“Some people do not realise how wonderful it is to go on a cruise. There’s never a time when you are hungry because there is always somewhere to eat, or you can call room service.

“There’s no putting your hand in your pocket every five minutes to pay for meals, it’s all there and I love that because I am such a foodie.”

Rustie added: “It’s the calmness, too, that’s special, sitting on a balcony watching the world go by.

“I like to read and spend time in the library and perhaps watch a film. I’ve been so busy lately that I will enjoy those long, relaxing days at sea, floating along with everything catered for.”

Saga Cruises has released its new programme of 2018 sailings which include putting West Africa back on the cruise map.

The 20 night Saga Pearl II ‘Traditions of the Canaries and Africa’ Cruise gives guests time to go ashore in Banjul, in The Gambia, and Dakar, in Senegal.

The themed cruise will focus on West Africa’s culture and traditions and includes talks by an anthropologist about local culture, customs and current issues. Authentic African dishes are prepped by a local chef and there is a traditional performance by Gambian dancers plus an art, dance and music performance in Dakar.

Banjul is the tiny capital of The Gambia and the political centre of the oldest democracy in Africa. The country is actually little more than the banks of the mighty River Gambia, set on St Mary’s Island, where the river joins the Atlantic.

Dakar is on West Africa’s westernmost point and the capital of French-speaking Senegal. Here there is a frenetic buzz of activity and visitors can try their hand at bartering in the craft markets for traditional embroidery, woodcarvings, metalwork and costume jewellery or just relax in the sunshine and taste the local mint tea.

Although Dakar is West Africa’s oldest European city, it is the most westernized and bears the legacy of Africa’s French colonial past, especially in the downtown Plateau area, where the architecture has echoes of southern France.

James Langley, Saga’s Head of Marine Operations, said “We’re delighted to offer our cruise passengers ports of call in Banjul and Senegal. Enrichment and immersion is a key part of our cruise itineraries and these ports will provide passengers with unforgettable sights, amazing experiences and wonderful memories.”

This 20-night all-inclusive cruise on January 8, 2018 sails from Southampton and also makes calls to São Vicente, in the Cape Verde Islands, 300 miles off the coast of West Africa; Santa Cruz, La Palma and Arrecife, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands; Funchal, Madeira and Portimão and Lisbon, Portugal.

To support the sale of their 2018 itineraries, Saga has launched a special voyage for Poldark fans.  The 37,000 tons Sapphire cruise ship will take guests into Poldark country where they can tour the wild headlands, harbours and beaches featured in Winston Graham’s novels.

The BBC’s new adaptation, set in the days when Cornwall’s mining industry was thriving, stars Aidan Turner, who plays smouldering hero Ross Poldark. When Saga Sapphire sails into Falmouth, passengers can visit the sites that gave Winston Graham inspiration for his stories about the tin-mining Poldark dynasty, as well as seeing locations featured in the new series.

The first stop on Saga’s Picturesque Poldark tour is Portreath, a small harbour town on the north Cornish coast which has a pretty, sandy beach. It was once a busy port, importing coal and exporting copper; the old loading ramp can still be seen.

Next is St Agnes Beacon, where guests can imagine Ross Poldark galloping across the cliffs on his horse, and a little further along St Agnes Head doubles as Nampara Valley, part of the Poldark family estate.

On the cliffs, visitors can see the Wheal Coates engine house overlooking Chapel Porth beach, while in the village of St Agnes the quirky terraced row of Stippy Stappy cottages, which feature in all Poldark novels, lead down to the beach.

The final stop is Perranporth, where Winston Graham lived from the age of 17. His books were heavily influenced by this small town and its inhabitants. Guests can stroll along the beach and view the stone bench on the dunes that serves as his memorial.

Saga Sapphire’s 2018 Easter Getaway cruise continues to St Peter Port in Guernsey and Bremen, in Germany, with a visit to the Meyer Werft shipyard where Saga’s first ever new build cruise ship is being built.

Saga Cruises has announced plans to update its shipping capacity, with an all-new Saga cruise ship expected to be delivered in Summer 2019 and the option to order a second for delivery in 2021.

The ships will be built by the Meyer Werft shipyard – a recognised leader in cruise ship construction.

The new ship will accommodate fewer than 1,000 passengers.

Lance Batchelor, chief executive officer, Saga plc who announced the decision at the company’s half-year results said:

“The cruise operation remains at the heart of the Saga brand and demonstrates our commitment to deliver excellence in customer service and outstanding value. This investment will be transformational for the cruise business and for our cruise customers.  The precise details of the new purpose built ship will be finalised over the coming months but will retain the traditional features our customers cherish.”

Robin Shaw, chief executive, Saga Cruises, said:

“Our plan for the first of our new modern and elegant cruise liners is sure to delight our existing passengers and we hope it will entice new passengers to cruise with us. We will retain an intimate small-ship feel, for fewer than 1,000 passengers, a high crew to customer ratio, great public spaces and entertainment facilities and dining can be accommodated in a single sitting.”

The ship is expected to have 540 suites and cabins each with a balcony.  Around 15% of cabins will be designed for single occupancy.  There will be single sitting dining throughout a range of restaurants as well as a variety of bars, speciality restaurants and al-fresco dining options. There will also be outdoor and indoor swimming pools, a spa, saunas, treatment rooms and beauty salon.

The 55,900 GT vessel will be approx. 234 metres long, 30.8 metres wide and with a planned completion date of summer 2019.

Saga Sapphire will sail to France on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the infamous World War 1 battle that claimed thousands of lives on both sides of battlefield.

A memorial service will be held on board for passengers to pay their respects to the fallen before a tour of the Somme battlefields, memorials and museums.

The five-night Remembering the Somme cruise will start from the Port of Dover, which played a key role in the protection of the English Channel during World War One.

A military historian will be on board to give a series of lectures during the themed cruise, which will also include two maiden ports of call. The first new port will be Boulogne for an excursion to the Somme, where the battles raged for more than four months.

The tour will take in Albert, the main Allied-held town behind the front line, and a visit to the Somme 1916 Museum before a walk around La Boisselle mine crater. At 328ft wide by 33ft deep it is the largest crater ever made by man in anger and was created by one of the explosions designed to break the German front line before the infantry assault on 1 July, 1916.

There will also be time to view the imposing Thiepval Memorial which commemorates 72,194 men who have no known grave. The Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont Hamel will also be on the itinerary and here visitors will be able to walk through the trenches and see a landscape still scarred by shell holes.

The cruise will continue to Le Havre, St Peter Port in Guernsey and Dunkirk where there will be further World War One and World War Two tours as well as cultural shore excursions.

The second maiden port of call will be Dunkirk, the scene of the 1940 evacuation where 338,000 British and Allied troops were rescued during Operation Dynamo.  The Battle of Dunkirk Museum, the 1940 Memorial and the English cemetery La Plaine au Bois will be included on this poignant tour.

The five night package is priced from £940, based on the lowest available inside cabin grade, departing Dover on 30 June, 2016. Price includes UK travel package to and from Dover, all meals, wine with lunch and dinner, afternoon tea, 24-hour room service, welcome cocktail party, entertainment and lectures, unlimited tea and coffee in selected venues, wi-fi, all on-board gratuities, porterage, shuttle bus to nearest town centre (when the ship is berthed more than 500 yards away), travel insurance and cancellation cover or a discount of £40 if passenger has own insurance cover.

Saga Ruby to retire early 2014

Saga Cruises has announced today that its Saga Ruby, the last cruise ship built in the UK, will be retire from the Saga fleet at the beginning of 2014.

Built in 1973 at Jarrow Shipyard on Tyneside, the ship will celebrate her 40th anniversary be performing one final Round the World Cruise, visiting many of the ports she had visited throughout her long service.

“Saga Ruby has delighted cruise-goers for some 40 years, but operating a ship of this age to meet the exacting standards we and others set is becoming an increasing challenge,” said Robin Shaw, CEO, Saga Shipping.

“We have therefore decided that she should be gracefully retired in 18 months. Saga Ruby will in her ruby anniversary year visit many of the ports where she been warmly welcomed over the years. We believe that Saga cruising has a great deal of potential and we have invested over the last few year well over £100 million on our fleet and we continue to look for opportunities to expand and improve our classic cruise experience,” he added.

Quest for Adventure, already in the Saga fleet, will revert back to her former livery as Saga Pearl II after her published cruise calendar is complete.
