United Airlines announces the largest South Pacific network expansion ever to and from the continental U.S., including the first non-stop flight between San Francisco and Christchurch set to commence on December 1. United will be the only carrier to directly connect the U.S. and the South Island of New Zealand. With 66 flights between the US and Australia/New Zealand every week, United will operate nearly 40% more flights from the U.S. to Australia and New Zealand next northern winter versus last year.

The carrier is adding new direct flights from Los Angeles to Brisbane and Auckland and increasing service to the region from its San Francisco hub with daily flights to Brisbane, twice daily flights to Sydney and flying larger aircraft to Melbourne. And thanks to United’s relationships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia, travelers can enjoy easy one-stop connections from these cities to more than 50 destinations in the region.

United already flies to more destinations in Australia and New Zealand than all other U.S. carriers combined, and now will have more flights and serve more destinations in the region from the U.S. than any other carrier in the world. Tickets are now on sale on the airline’s mobile app and on United.com – just in time for customers to plan their trips for the region’s peak winter season.

“This past winter, United enhanced our network and became the largest carrier to the South Pacific region. Now, this upcoming winter, we will expand even further,” said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances. “Our strong partnerships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia provide unparalleled connectivity, and with our historic expansion across five destinations in New Zealand and Australia, United is the clear choice for customers’ travel to the region.”

San Francisco – Christchurch, NZ
Starting December 1, United will be the only airline to offer direct flights between the U.S. and New Zealand’s South Island, with the first direct San Francisco-Christchurch service. United will fly this route three times weekly on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. United’s new flight to Christchurch is part of the airline’s broader expansion efforts in New Zealand and next winter, the airline will be nearly 70% larger in New Zealand than in 2019.

Los Angeles – Auckland
Next winter, United will build on its position as the largest U.S. airline to Auckland, adding four weekly flights from Los Angeles. United is the only U.S. carrier to serve Auckland year-round with its existing service from San Francisco. United will fly its Los Angeles[1]Auckland route on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, starting October 28.

Los Angeles – Brisbane
In winter 2022, United became the only airline to offer direct flights between Brisbane and San Francisco. On November 29, United will add to this service by adding three weekly Los Angles-Brisbane flights on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner – becoming the largest carrier between the U.S. and Brisbane.

More Flights to Sydney and Brisbane

In addition to adding new flights to its schedule, United will also increase its flying from San Francisco to Brisbane and Sydney. Starting October 28, United will offer daily flights between San Francisco and Brisbane on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and will be able to fly nearly triple the number of customers to Brisbane from the US next winter than it did in 2022. The airline will also fly twice daily between San Francisco and Sydney on Boeing 777-300ERs starting October 28, offering more flights to Sydney from the U.S. than any other carrier. More Seats to Melbourne This past winter, United became the largest airline from the U.S. to Melbourne, increasing from ten to fourteen weekly roundtrip flights, with one daily flight from both San Francisco and Los Angeles. Starting October 28, United will deploy its largest airplane on flights between San Francisco-Melbourne. The 777-300ER will add nearly 100 daily seats to each departure. Compared to winter 2019, United will offer 65% more seats to Melbourne.

TAP Air Portugal (TAP) is to increase its routes to the Americas in the summer of 2023, offering a total of 17 additional flights during this peak period. This rise, compared to the same period in 2022, will restore pre-pandemic flight levels, and provide more freedom to customers when booking summer holidays.

In line with customer demand, routes to the US are set to gain an additional 10 flights per week next year, with Boston increasing to 14, both Miami and Washington up to 10, and five to Chicago and San Francisco.

TAP will also boost the number of flights to Brazil, with six new weekly services, with Sào Paulo increasing to 20, Belo Horizonte to seven, six to Salvador and Brasília, and four to Belém.

Flights between Lisbon and Caracas will increase from two to three flights per week, allowing improved connectivity to Venezuela. The growth in transatlantic flights from Lisbon is critical to TAP’s goals, with further plans for their Porto hub in the pipeline for the future.

Air India resumed its non-stop flight connecting Bengaluru to San Francisco, on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays with the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. The first flight AI 175 departed from Bengaluru at 2.20 p.m. to arrive in San Francisco (local time) at 5 p.m. on the same day.

The first return flight AI 176 will leave San Francisco on Friday at 11 p.m. to arrive at Bengaluru on December 4 at 4.25 a.m. Air India said that the resumption of the non-stop flight will connect the world’s two tech hubs – the original Silicon Valley and the Silicon Valley of India. The flight will operate thrice a week on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays with the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. The direct distance between Bengaluru and San Francisco is 13,993 kms approx. and the cities are diametrically at opposite ends of the world with a time zone change of approx. 13.5 hours.

The total flight time on this route will be more than 17 hours depending on the wind speed on that particular day. The route for this flight will be the safest, fastest and most economical, Air India said.

“This will take Air India’s India-US frequency to 37 non-stop flights per week. At present, Air India operates non-stop flights from Delhi to New York, Newark, Washington DC, San Francisco and Chicago and from Mumbai to Newark. Air India is set to spread its wings further in the United States with the commencement of its first-ever non-stop service between Mumbai and San Francisco and to New York,” the airline said in a statement.

Recent study data from Voyagu notes that more than a third of American premium travellers prefer utilizing advisor services when flying internationally. Voyagu, an AI-powered travel management platform and marketplace, surveyed 2,050 American premium travelers who booked an international flight at least once in the past six months and found that 31% prefer to rely on advisors.

A study was conducted from June-November 2022 among affluent, U.S.-based international travelers ages 40-75, with net worth starting at USD2 million. All respondents had booked an overseas flight within the past six months and typically book multiple flights each year. Annually, 57.4% booked 2-5 flights, 33% booked one flight, and 5.1% booked five or more flights. The remaining 4.5% booked one flight every few years.

The participants of the survey confirmed that one of the main reasons for them to use the travel advisor, besides the benefit of better pricing, is getting human support and expert management of sudden changes throughout the trip. While the share of online self-service booking is still rather high at 69% and airline website bookings at 41.6%, when the price is comparable, 31% strongly prefer to book with a travel advisor.

The study also revealed that there is no specific difference in choosing a travel advisor when it comes to frequency and reasons for travel, and the preference to book with a travel advisor is gender-neutral.  The research outcomes correlate with the findings of another recent survey commissioned by ALG Vacations, which showed that 57% of U.S. adults believe they would benefit from having an expert handle unexpected vacation issues. The survey also found that 54% of Generation Xers (ages 42-57) and 48% of Baby Boomers (ages 58-75) would also be open to having expert help.

“As travel demand shows no sign of decreasing, the role of agents is becoming more prominent, changing from a booking assistant into a travel-savvy expert who provides valuable tips as well as instant trip support and management,” says Ivan Saprov, CEO and founder of Voyagu. “A common myth is that using an advisor increases the trip price. If agents’ routine tasks are automated by tech solutions, travelers can enjoy invaluable advising services for the same or even lower prices than if they were booking the trip on their own.”

The market size of the travel agency sector in the U.S. amounted to USD 38.65 billion in 2021 and is forecast to reach USD48.53 billion in 2022. The primary positive factors affecting this industry are international trips by U.S. residents and a medium-low growth risk score. Trends in residents traveling within the United States on overnight trips for vacations, business or other purposes are key factors influencing revenue for the travel agency industry.

Star Alliance member LOT Polish Airlines has signed an interline agreement with US carrier JetBlue Airways. With this, passengers travelling with LOT Polish Airlines from Warsaw to the United States can now fly on to more than 100 destinations from the JetBlue Airways network.

“We are excited about this new interline agreement with JetBlue Airways, as it allows us to offer our passengers much more flight options in North America,” said Michal Fijol, chief commercial officer, LOT Polish Airlines. “They can book through-fares to their final destination; they also only need one ticket, and they can, of course, check through their baggage to their final destination.”

From its global hub at the Polish capital Warsaw, LOT Polish Airlines currently flies up to 35 times a week to US cities such as New York (Newark and JFK airports), Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles. The airline also plans to resume its US flights from Budapest by summer 2023. Thru JetBlue Airways, LOT passengers can now seamlessly reach many other popular destinations in the US such as Boston, Las Vegas, Orlando, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as in Latin America, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Fijol added, “We have been flying from Warsaw to the United States for 50 years and see a continuously high demand from Poland as well as from numerous other European countries and now even from India for these services. In addition to tourists, many business travellers book our flights to the US, as well as a large number of people who want to visit their families or friends on the other side of the Atlantic.

Air India has announced 20 additional flights every week to Birmingham, London and San Francisco. The additional flights to these three global destinations will be introduced in a phased manner from October to December this year.

Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD, Air India, said, “As Air India reinvents itself under the Vihaan.AI transformation programme, adding frequency and improving connectivity from major Indian cities to more international destinations is a significant focus. This sizeable frequency increase to the US and the UK, as well as the addition of new city pairs and improved aircraft cabin interiors, comes just 10 months after Air India’s acquisition by the Tata Group. It is a clear signal of our intent, and an early step towards a much bigger aspiration.”

With 5 additional flights a week to Birmingham, 9 additional flights to London and 6 additional flights a week to San Francisco, Air India will be able to offer over 5,000 additional seats every week to customers and ensure ample choice in terms of connectivity, convenience, and cabin space.

Air India’s current schedule of 34 flights every week to the UK will now go up to 48 flights. Birmingham will receive extra five flights per week, three from Delhi and two additional from Amritsar. London will receive nine additional weekly flights, of which, five are from Mumbai, three from Delhi and one from Ahmedabad. Altogether, seven Indian cities will now have non-stop Air India flights to the UK’s capital.

Flights from India to the United States will increase from 34 to 40 per week. Air India will now connect Mumbai with San Francisco with a thrice weekly service and reinstate a three-times-weekly Bengaluru operation. This takes Air India’s San Francisco offering from 10 to 16 weekly, with non-stop service from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

From November, Emirates customers flying into Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston – three of the biggest business hubs in the U.S – will be able to easily connect onto United flights to and from nearly 200 cities across the Americas on a single ticket. At the eight other U.S. airports served by Emirates – Boston, Dallas, LA, Miami, JFK, Orlando, Seattle and Washington DC – both airlines will have an interline arrangement in place.

United will launch a new direct flight between Newark and Dubai starting in March 2023 – from there, customers will be able to travel on Emirates or its sister airline flydubai to more than 100 cities. Tickets for United’s new Dubai flight are now on sale. Emirates and United announced their agreement at a ceremonial event at Dulles International Airport, hosted by United CEO Scott Kirby and Emirates President Tim Clark, featuring United and Emirates Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and flight crews from each carrier.

Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “Two of the biggest, and best-known airlines in the world are joining hands to fly people better to more places, at a time when travel demand is rebounding with a vengeance. It’s a significant partnership that will unlock tremendous consumer benefit and bring the United Arab Emirates and the United States even closer. We welcome United’s return to Dubai next year, where our hub Dubai essentially becomes a gateway for United to reach Asia, Africa and the Middle East via the combined network of Emirates and flydubai. We look forward to developing our partnership with United for the long term.”

Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines said: “This agreement unites two iconic, flag carrier airlines who share a common commitment to creating the best customer experience in the skies. United’s new flight to Dubai and our complementary networks will make global travel easier for millions of our customers, helping boost local economies and strengthen cultural ties. This is a proud moment for both United and Emirates employees, and I look forward to our journey together.”

Customers of both airlines can soon book these connecting flights on a single ticket – making check-in and luggage transfer faster and easier. For example – travellers will be able to visit United.com or use the United app to book a flight from New York/Newark to Karachi, Pakistan or go to Emirates.com to book a flight from Dubai to Atlanta or Honolulu.

This agreement will also give the loyalty program members of both airlines more opportunities for more rewards: Emirates Skywards members can soon earn miles when they travel on United operated flights, and United Mileage Plus members flying on United’s New York/Newark to Dubai flight will be able to earn and redeem miles when connecting beyond on Emirates and flydubai. Eligible customers travelling on codeshare flights will also soon enjoy access to Emirates and United lounges. More details on frequent flyer awards and lounge sharing benefits will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Both airlines have recently announced significant investments in the customer experience. Emirates will retrofit more than 120 aircraft as part of a $2 billion effort that includes elevated meal choices, a brand-new vegan menu, a ‘cinema in the sky’ experience, cabin interior upgrades, and sustainable choices. At United, the airline will add 500 new Boeing and Airbus aircraft to its fleet with a focus on a new signature interior that includes seat-back screens in every seat, larger overhead bins, Bluetooth connectivity throughout, and the industry’s fastest available in-flight WiFi.

A350 in Finnair livery

In recent years, much of Finnair’s growth strategy centred around the Asian and Chinese markets. However, with the advantages of geography, meterological conditions notwithstanding, the airline also developed a solid presence in North America, with services to New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Miami.

Now, capitalising on this presence, Finnair has announced it will now begin operation on a fifth North American route. On 31 March 2019, the airline will start to fly three times a week to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In addition, the Los Angeles service will be Finnair’s first US route to be regularly operated with the new Airbus A350 aircraft.

Finnair will also be updating its existing US offering with seasonal additions to its summer schedules for San Francisco and Chicago, which kick off in April 2019. From May a fourth flight will be added for San Francisco.

These changes, along with the new LAX coverage, means Finn Air will operate flights to California every day of the week in summer.

Juha Järvinen CCO of Finnair

“We are very happy to expand our North American network and fly a new route to Los Angeles with our Airbus A350,” said Juha Järvinen, chief commercial officer at Finnair.

“We opened our route to San Francisco two years ago with tremendous success, proving that California and the West Coast are very popular with our customers. We are confident that this new route to Los Angeles will garner the same level of interest moving forward.”

The new route will be operated within the Atlantic joint business between Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia. Currently, the four airlines operate over 100 daily return flights between Europe and North America.

Whether culture or commerce, San Francisco has got it going on. This applies doubly so to SF’s Financial District where hedge fund execs and shoppers deep in retail therapy mingle under the silhouette of the Transamerica building.

As you might expect for such a buzzing city, San Francisco is awash with some exceptional MICE facilities. To make things easier for event planners, the good people at the San Francisco Travel Association have put together their choice of San Francisco’s five leading MICE venues:

Bentley Reserve & Conference Centre

Formerly the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the Bently’s imposing, eight-columned-entrance is an immediate signal of its long-established elegance. Wood-panelled boardrooms class up any meeting and large windows keep things bright and cheerful, while smaller meeting rooms and a conference lounge fill in the gaps for groups large and small. The real newsmaker is the Banking Hall, an epic 8,000-square-foot ballroom that was voted the best in North America by BizBash in 2013.

Julia Morgan Ballroom

Julia Morgan Ballroom

For more than 100 years, the 1400sqm of event space within the Julia Morgan Ballroom and its sister venues have offered modern amenities, acclaimed culinary direction and distinctive Beaux-Arts architecture. An unobstructed exhibit space as well as breakout and lounge areas provide flexibility for all types of events.

Practising Law Institute California Conference Centre

A polished and affordable choice for seminars, receptions and business meetings located on Market Street, the recently renovated LEED Gold-certified centre’s mix of meeting rooms facilitate networking and provide comfortable, tech-savvy amenities for speakers and attendees — including webcast/video conference capabilities for those who couldn’t make it in person.

City Club of San Francisco

The City Club’s Art Deco interiors present a modern and dramatic setting for everything from client receptions to fairy-tale weddings and holiday gatherings. One of San Francisco’s premier business and social clubs has a reputation for stellar service, linking event organisers with the city’s best vendors and ensuring it all comes together smoothly in its variety of spaces, from grand salons to a library, wine cellar and penthouse.

One Kearny

Comprising three buildings that date back to the 1900s, the One Kearny building is home to event venue, One Kearny Club. The 370sqm venue hosts events ranging from small meetings to all day corporate events and receptions with a maximum capacity of 300 guests. It includes an outdoor terrace that John King, urban design critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, described as “San Francisco’s most exhilarating new public space.”

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of its flights to key destinations on three continents later this year.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

Singapore Airlines has resumed “ultra-long-haul” flight operations, with the launch of its first direct route to the USA since 2013.

The new Singapore-San Francisco service departed for the first time on Sunday (23 October 2016), and will now operate daily. Covering a distance of 13,593km, it becomes the longest non-stop route in SIA’s network and the joint fourth longest commercial flight operated by any airline in the world today.

SIA’s direct flights to New York and Los Angeles were previously the two longest in commercial aviation history. Rising fuel prices however, meant that these ultra-long-haul routes became too costly to operate and they were dropped in 2013. Since then, SIA has only flown to the US via Europe or Northeast Asia.

Now however, the airline’s new fleet of fuel-efficient Airbus A350 aircraft has enabled SIA to resume direct trans-Pacific flights. San Francisco will be served non-stop using the standard version of the A350-900 aircraft, and the airline is also planning to take delivery of a new “Ultra-Long-Range” (ULR) version of the A350, which will enable it to resume direct flights to New York and LA in 2018.

The A350 deployed on the new route was the 10,000th aircraft ever produced by Airbus
The A350 deployed on the new route was the 10,000th aircraft ever produced by Airbus

The A350 deployed on the San Francisco route also happens to be the 10,000th aircraft ever delivered by Airbus, and features a special livery to reflect the milestone.

On the new outbound flight, the A350 will depart Singapore’s Changi Airport at 0920 and arrive in San Francisco at 0755 the same day, following a flight time of approximately 14.5 hours. The return flights will leave the Californian hub at 0925 and arrive back in Singapore at 1840 the following day, with a flight time of more than 17 hours.

Both legs will cross the International Date Line, and if that sounds like a recipe for jetlag, passengers will be happy to hear that the A350 features several cabin elements that are designed to reduce the effects of jetlag, such as larger windows and improved lighting.

SIA now operates twice daily flights to San Francisco, with the other routed via Hong Kong. It also serves LA via Seoul and Tokyo, New York via Frankfurt, and effective next week, Houston via Manchester. United Airlines also operates the Singapore-San Francisco route.

Air India has flown into the record books by operating the world’s longest commercial flight.

The national carrier has switched its Delhi-San Francisco service, which had previously operated westwards over the Atlantic, to an eastbound routing across the Pacific. Covering 15,100km, this becomes the world’s longest air route, in terms of distance, operated by any commercial airline today.

Interestingly however, the Pacific routing actually saves Air India time and fuel. Despite the extra distance, the flight actually took about two hours less (15 hours 55 minutes in total) to reach its destination. A senior AI official explained the reasons for this.

“The Earth rotates from west to east, and winds flow in that direction too. Flying west means facing strong headwinds and flying east means getting strong tailwinds, which does the opposite,” the unnamed official was quoted saying by TNN.

“While taking the Atlantic route to SFO, we usually face headwinds of 24kph. This means that if our aircraft is doing 800kph, its actual ground speed is 776kph. Taking the Pacific route will mean getting tailwinds of 138kph, which make the aircraft have an actual ground speed of 938kph.”

AI’s 15,100km Delhi-San Francisco route surpasses Emirates’ 14,203km Dubai-Auckland service as the longest commercial air route currently in service. It fails however, to eclipse the 15,345km Singapore-New York route previously operated by Singapore Airlines. This service was terminated in 2013, but SIA is planning to resume the route in 2018.

World’s longest non-stop air routes:

1)    Delhi-SanFrancisco (Air India)    –    15,100km
2)    Dubai-Auckland (Emirates)         –    14,203km
3)    Sydney-Dallas (Qantas)                 –    13,804km
4)    Singapore-San Francisco (United and Singapore Airlines) –    13,593km
5)    Atlanta-Johannesburg (Delta)     –    13,582km

Air India will re-route its San Francisco services over the Pacific Ocean, the Economic Times reports.

The national carrier first launched flights from Delhi to the Californian city last December, but has until now operated the flight westbound, flying over the Atlantic Ocean. It has now received permission however, to start flying eastbound out of Delhi and over the Pacific Ocean.

The switch, which comes as Air India prepares to double the route’s frequency to six flights per week from November 2016, is expected to reduce the flight time by approximately three hours and cut fuel consumption.

The trans-Pacific route is actually longer than the trans-Atlantic option, but strong tailwinds would allow Air India’s Boeing 777 aircraft to cover the distance faster and more economically.

The Economic Times reported an unnamed Air India official as saying that this represented a “win-win situation” for the airline and its passengers.

Air India will become the only Indian carrier flying across the Pacific. Jet Airways previously operated a Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco service, but this was long since suspended.

Air India will more than double the frequency of its Delhi-San Francisco route this winter, with the addition of four more weekly flights.

The national carrier started flying to San Francisco in December 2015 and currently serves the route three times a week, with departures from Delhi every Wednesday, Friday and Monday. But from the start of the winter schedules in early November 2016, the frequency will increase to daily.

“We are flying planes with average 88% loads and are also meeting the total cost of the flight. We are going to make it a daily flight most likely from November,” a senior Air India official was quoted saying by the Economic Times.

Air India’s flights depart Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 0230 and arrive in San Francisco at 0700 the same day. The return flights then depart at 1130 and arrive back in the Indian capital at 1555 the following day.

The flight time is approximately 16 hours and Air India serves the route with its Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.

Fiji Airways has embarked on the next phase of its long-haul expansion plan with the launch of its first ever direct flights to San Francisco.

The inaugural flight touched down in the Californian city on 16 June 2016, and services will now operate twice a week using Fiji Airways’ new Airbus A330 aircraft.

The outbound flights will leave Fiji’s Nadi International Airport every Sunday and Thursday at 2215 and arrive at San Francisco International Airport at 1345. The return services take-off on the same days at 2300 and land back in Fiji at 0500 two days later. The flights, which have a duration of approximately 10-11 hours, cross the International Date Line.

The new service will run on a seasonal basis until 14 August 2016, before recommencing for the Christmas and New Year holidays in December 2016 and January 2017.

San Francisco becomes the second new long-haul destination launched by Fiji Airways this year, following the start of services to Singapore in April 2016. It also becomes the airline’s second destination on the US mainland, following Los Angeles.

Singapore Airlines will launch direct flights to the US later in 2016 – two years earlier than previously anticipated.

The national carrier has confirmed that effective 23 October this year, it will start flying non-stop from Singapore to San Francisco using its new Airbus A350 aircraft.

And the launch of this flight will also enable SIA to add a second daily flight to Los Angeles. At present the airline operates two daily flights to San Francisco – one via Hong Kong and one via Seoul. By choosing to fly direct to San Francisco, the flight that currently operates via Seoul will instead be routed to LA.

This new Singapore-Seoul-LA service will also commence on 23 October 2016, and will operate alongside the existing daily Singapore-Tokyo Narita-LA routing.

SIA had previously announced that it would relaunch non-stop flights to the US in 2018, with services to LA and New York.

“Our customers have been asking us to offer more US services and we are pleased to be able to do so. With new non-stop San Francisco flights and the increase in frequency to Los Angeles, customers will have two flights to choose from each day,” said Lee Wen Fen, SIA’s senior vice president of marketing planning.

The new direct Singapore-San Francisco service will be the longest flight in SIA’s network, at a distance of 13,601km. Both the outbound and return flights will have morning departure times, and SIA will serve the route using its new 253-seat A350-900 aircraft, which features business, premium economy and economy class cabins.

In addition to San Francisco and LA, SIA’s US network currently includes flights to Houston via Moscow and New York JFK via Frankfurt. And the airline is planning to expand its US operations even further in 2018, when the arrival of its new “ultra-long-range” A350s will enable SIA to resume direct flights to LA and New York.

Earlier this year United Airlines launched direct flights between San Francisco and Singapore, which marked the first direct link from between the US and the Lion City since SIA suspended its LA and Newark services in 2013.

Direct flights between Singapore and the US restarted today, following two-and-a-half-year hiatus.

Late on Wednesday, United Airlines’ first non-stop flight departed San Francisco International Airport, bound for Singapore. The inaugural outbound service took off from the Californian city at 2255 local time, and will arrive at Changi Airport at 0615 on Friday, having crossed the International Date Line. The first return service will depart Singapore at 0845 tomorrow morning, arriving back in San Francisco at 0915 the same day.

United will fly its Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Singapore

United will operate the route daily using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. And with distance of 13,593km and a flying time of approximately 16 hours 20 minutes westbound, and 15 hours 30 minutes eastbound, this makes it the longest Dreamliner route currently operated by any airline.

The direct service will reduce the journey time between the two cities by around four hours.

“Our non-stop service between San Francisco and Singapore further enhances our already unprecedented trans-Pacific route network and builds an even stronger gateway to the Pacific from our San Francisco hub,” said Jim Compton, United’s vice chairman & chief revenue officer.

“These flights will offer our customers unique nonstop convenience when traveling to Singapore from the West Coast, with dozens of one-stop options from other cities across the Americas, including more than 26 that did not have one-stop service to Singapore before.”

United’s new service marks the first time since late 2013, when Singapore Airlines suspended its non-stop services to New York and Los Angeles, that Singapore and the US have been linked with a direct flight.

At that time, Singapore-Newark flight route was the world’s longest scheduled flight, at 15,345km. United’s new Singapore-San Francisco now becomes the third longest commercial air route in the world, behind Emirates’ Dubai-Auckland (14,203km) and Qantas’ Sydney-Dallas (13,804km) flights.

Singapore becomes the second new Asia Pacific destination United has launched from San Francisco this year, following the recent start of flights to Xi’an. And its trans-Pacific expansion will continue next month with the launch of services to Auckland and Hangzhou.

United will deploy its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the route.

“United is celebrating our 30th anniversary of service linking the US and China this year and there couldn’t be a better way to honour our proud and long-standing relationship than by being the first airline to offer customers nonstop trans-Pacific service to Xi’an,” said Marcel Fuchs, United’s vice president of Atlantic & Pacific sales.

“United operates more nonstop US-China flights, and to more cities in China, than any other airline and we expect the addition of flights to Xi’an to continue to create opportunities for trade and collaboration between our two countries throughout the US-China Tourism Year and long into the future.”

United now operates 96 weekly flights between the US and China, including flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chengdu and now Xi’an. And the airline will continue to grow is Chinese network this summer with the launch of direct flights between San Francisco and Hangzhou on 13 July 2016.

The airline currently flies direct between Newark and Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

“United’s proposed service will connect two centres of global commerce and culture with Tokyo’s close-in airport and offer customers more options for travel between the US and Japan,” said Steve Morrissey, United’s vice president of regulatory & policy.

And United has also submitted an application with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to continue its existing daily direct flights between San Francisco and Haneda.

“More than 150,000 customers from large and small communities across the US have benefitted from United’s San Francisco-Haneda service. We hope the DOT reaffirms its earlier decision that this route provides numerous consumer and competitive benefits,” Morrissey stated.

In addition, Hawaiian Airlines has applied to the DOT for permission to fly between Kona and Haneda. This would mark the airline’s second route to the Japanese airport, following its existing Honolulu-Haneda service.

United currently operates direct flights to Tokyo from seven mainland US hubs, with flights to Narita from Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington DC, and the service connecting Haneda with San Francisco.

Alaska Airlines has agreed to acquire Virgin America in a deal worth approximately US$4 billion.

Under the agreement, Alaska Air Group will pay US$57.00 per share in cash for California-based Virgin. This will enable Alaska to significantly expand its presence in California, which is seen as a key focus area for the Seattle-based company.

The combined company would become a major force in the US West Coast region, with hubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, and a combined fleet of approximately 280 aircraft providing 1,200 daily departures. The group would also maintain a dominant position in Alaska from its Anchorage hub.

“With our expanded network and strong presence in California, we’ll offer customers more attractive flight options for non-stop travel. We look forward to bringing together two incredible groups of employees to build on the successes they have achieved as standalone companies to make us an even stronger competitor nationally,” said Alaska Air Group’s chairman & CEO, Brad Tilden.

David Cush, Virgin America’s president & CEO, commented; “Our mission has always been to create an airline that people love – and we accomplished that while changing the industry for the better. Joining forces with Alaska Airlines will ensure that our mission lives on, and that the stronger, combined company will continue to be a great place to work and an airline that focuses on an outstanding travel experience.”

The two companies expect to complete the transaction no later than 1 January 2017 and the company’s headquarters will remain in Seattle.

This will mark the latest in a series of mergers and acquisitions within the US aviation sector. Delta Air Lines acquired Northwest Airlines in 2008, and two years later United Airlines merged with Continental. Most recently, American Airlines merged with US Airways to create the world’s largest airline group.

The merger of Alaska and Virgin America would effectively leave the US with six major airlines, with American, Delta, United and Alaska competing with low-cost carriers Southwest Airlines and JetBlue.

Fiji Airways has announced plans to launch direct services to San Francisco.

The new seasonal service will start on 16 June 2016, operating twice a week until January 2017. Flights will operate direct to and from Fiji’s main gateway, Nadi International Airport.

“This new service is in line with our network expansion targets and gives us further reach into North America,” explained Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Andre Viljoen.

“The seasonal flying takes into account common vacation trends out of the United States. Along with the Fijian community, the Samoan and Tongan communities living in San Francisco are also big winners with this direct service. It will offer them a convenient one-stop flight back to their homeland to see family and friends.”

The flight schedule will see services depart Nadi every Thursday and Sunday at 2100, arriving in San Francisco 1230 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The return services will then leave San Francisco at 2300, arriving back into Nadi at 0500 two days later.

The airline said that these flight times would provide “easy connectivity within Fiji, to Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Island nations”.

Fiji Airways will operate the 10-hour flight using its two-class Airbus A330 aircraft.

San Francisco will become Fiji Airways’ second major route launch of 2016, following the new twice weekly service to Singapore which is expected to start in April. And San Francisco will become the airline’s third US destination, following Los Angeles and Honolulu.

“Fiji is already a popular holiday destination for Americans, especially those from California. The new San Francisco direct flights will allow even more visitors – including former Fiji residents – to visit our home, its beaches, its multitude of experiences, but most importantly, the world-renowned hospitality of the Fijian people,” said Fiji’s Attorney General and Minister for Public Enterprises & Civil Aviation, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

American Airlines and Qantas will launch two new trans-Pacific routes in the next 24 hours, connecting Australia with the US.

Qantas flight QF73 will depart Sydney on Friday afternoon, bound for San Francisco, while American Airlines flight AA72 from Sydney to Los Angeles is scheduled to take-off on Saturday morning.

The new services have been made possible by an expanded commercial partnership between Qantas and American, and form part of a broader trans-Pacific network spanning Australia, New Zealand and the US.

“This is a new era for both airlines and we’re excited to be unlocking new travel options for our customers and helping to build trade, tourism and investment opportunities for the Australian and US economies,” said Qantas’ group CEO, Alan Joyce.

“We can’t wait to return to San Francisco, which was Qantas’ first ever US destination back in the 1950s and is still a hugely popular holiday spot for Australians. What’s different today is that we’re also seeing really strong demand for business travel, driven by the Silicon Valley technology boom.”

Doug Parker, American’s chairman & CEO, added; “Qantas has been a fantastic partner through oneworld and our joint business relationship, and we are delighted that customers are seeing enhanced benefits of this partnership through a greater choice of flights to the US. With this new Qantas service to San Francisco and American’s new daily service to Los Angeles, customers are the clear winners when travelling with our two great airlines.”

Qantas’ Sydney-San Francisco services will ramp up to six per week in January 2016, with all flights to be operated by a Boeing 747-400 aircraft that features the same interiors as the airline’s Airbus A380s. American’s Boeing 777-300ER will operate daily on the Sydney-Los Angeles route.

Commencing in July 2016, United will serve the trans-Pacific route three times a week using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. And from November 2016, the route will be upgraded to a daily service using a larger B787-9 aircraft.

Air New Zealand intends to partner United on the new route, as part of the airlines’ trans-Pacific alliance on routes between the US and New Zealand.

“The United States is New Zealand’s third largest tourism source market, contributing almost a billion dollars to our economy in the past financial year,” said Air New Zealand’s CEO, Christopher Luxon.

“We know there are more than 30 million Americans actively considering New Zealand as a holiday destination. To have a partner carrier with a network like United Airlines promoting destination New Zealand and attracting visitors through its immense sales and distribution channels will provide a significant boost to inbound tourism.

“We look forward to working together with United to continue to build the links between New Zealand and the US,” he added.

The new services will run alongside Air New Zealand’s existing daily flights between Auckland and San Francisco. The airline also operates 18 weekly flights to Los Angeles, four to Vancouver and four to Honolulu. And from 15 December, Air New Zealand will commence five weekly services from Auckland to Houston.

United and Air New Zealand are both members of the Star Alliance.

Air India will launch a new direct service connecting New Delhi with San Francisco before the end of the year.

The plan was announced during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Silicon Valley. Flights will commence on 2 December 2015 and will operate three times a week (Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) using a Boeing 777-200LR (long-range) aircraft.

The route will mark the first direct flights between the two cities and Air India’s fourth US route, following existing services to New York (JFK and Newark) and Chicago.

The announcement quashes speculation that Air India was planning to launch direct flights from Bengaluru to San Francisco, a route that would have connected two of the world’s biggest IT hubs and created the longest air route in the world.

United Airlines is planning to launch direct trans-Pacific flights to Xi’an.

The carrier has applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to commence a new seasonal service direct from San Francisco to the historic Chinese city. If approved, this will be the first trans-Pacific service to Xi’an operated by any airline, and United will become the first US airline to serve the city.

United intends to operate the route using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

“We are excited by the prospect of adding the first trans-Pacific Xi’an service to United’s global route network,” said Jim Compton, United’s vice chairman & chief revenue officer. “Assuming our application is approved, United customers will have unique nonstop flights to one of China’s most vibrant cities, with fast and easy connections to destinations throughout the Americas from our San Francisco hub.”

If approved, flights would depart San Francisco every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 1325, arriving in Xi’an at 1730 the following day. The return flights will then depart Shanxi’s provincial capital every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1030, and arrive back in San Francisco at 0735 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line.

United currently has 19 B787 Dreamliners in its fleet and expects to take delivery of six more by the end of 2015.

Air India could be on the verge of launching the world’s longest air route.

The Economic Times reports that the national carrier is considering plans to operate services between Bengaluru and San Francisco – a distance of approximately 14,000km.

If realised, this would exceed Qantas‘ 13,730km route from Sydney to Dallas, which currently holds the record. It would also eclipse Emirates’ planned 13,820km Dubai-Panama City service, which will become the world’s longest flight when it launches in February 2016.

The Bengaluru-San Francisco route would connect two of the world’s biggest IT hubs; Bengaluru has been dubbed the “Silicon Valley of India”.

“We are planning to have a non-stop from either Delhi or Bengaluru to San Francisco on our Boeing 777-200 long-range aircraft. In addition we are planning a direct service between Ahmedabad and London due to the huge demand for travel between these two cities,” the Economic Times quoted an unnamed “senior official” at Air India as saying.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to San Francisco next week.

Commencing on 18 December 2015, Qantas will initially operate the route on “peak days” before increasing to six flights a week in January 2016.

The San Francisco flights have been made possible by American Airlines starting a direct daily Sydney-Los Angeles service on 19 December 2015. This will replace four of Qantas’ weekly flights on the same route, and one Melbourne-LA service.

The Boeing 747 aircraft Qantas used on these flights will instead be deployed on the Sydney-San Francisco service.

Under its trans-Pacific partnership, Qantas will also codeshare on American Airlines’ Sydney-LA flights.

“The feedback from our customers since we announced the expansion of the Qantas and American Airlines alliance has been fantastic,” said Qantas International’s CEO, Gareth Evans. “They are thrilled we are returning to San Francisco, which is the most popular onward destination for Qantas’ customers travelling to the US.

“Our corporate customers in particular have told us they look forward to saving about four hours each way by not having to connect through Los Angeles,” he added.

Qantas and American Airlines are now working to finalise the schedule of the new services, with fares expected to be made available in the coming weeks.

A third passenger has reportedly died after an Asiana Airlines plane crash landed in San Francisco last week having been in intensive care since the incident.

The news site WCPO.com had quoted San Francisco General Hospital interim surgery chief Margaret Knudson as saying that a number of passengers had come to the hospital suffering from injuries including paralysis, unconsciousness and serious abdominal bleeding.

Police have also confirmed that one of two people who had initially been reported as dead was struck by a fire engine, which was en route to the site. The autopsy is still due to see if she was alive when she was hit.

The Boeing 777 crashed on a flight from Seoul to San Francisco carrying 291 passengers, as reported by Travel Daily.

A statement by the airline at the time said:

“Asiana Airlines is currently investigating the specific cause of the incident as well as any injuries that may have been sustained to passengers as a result. Asiana Airlines will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation of all associated government agencies and to facilitate this cooperation has established an emergency response centre at its headquarters.”
