Air China expanded its US network this week with the launch of its inaugural flight to San Jose, the Californian city that serves as the gateway to Silicon Valley.

The maiden flight took off from Shanghai on 1 September 2016 and Air China will now operate the route three times a week using an Airbus A330 aircraft.

It becomes the first direct link between Shanghai and San Jose, and Air China’s first trans-Pacific service from China’s commercial capital. Hainan Airlines already flies to San Jose from Beijing.

Flights will now depart Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1330 and arrive at Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport at 1040 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The return flights then leave San Jose at 1230 and arrive back in Shanghai at 1640 the next day.

Air China now serves a total of 36 destinations from Shanghai, of which 14 are international.

California’s tech heartland, Silicon Valley, will receive its first direct service to London Heathrow when British Airways launches non-stop flights to San José on 4 May 2016.

Fares to San José will be priced from £599 return, during British Airways’ ‘Big British Take Off’ promotion.

San José is the world’s software powerhouse and home to household hi-tech giants such as Adobe, Apple, Cisco, eBay, Google and Intel, as well as thousands of tech start-up companies and world-famous Stanford University in nearby Palo Alto.

British Airways will operate daily flights using its new 787-9 Dreamliner, which features its new First Class cabin.

Customers can already fly daily to Los Angeles and San Francisco in comfort and style on British Airways’ super-jumbo, the A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

Stephen Humphreys, British Airways, head of global sales, said: “There’s no better place to fly the world’s most advanced passenger aircraft than to the world’s home of hi-tech and innovation, San José.

“We’re sure this new service will prove just the business for Californian-based companies looking to expand into Europe and will strengthen London’s strong commercial ties with the West Coast.”

Sam Liccardo, mayor of San Jose, said: “San José and Silicon Valley tech companies have committed to Mineta San José International as being their airport of choice, and have expressed strong support for a direct flight to London for several years.

“British Airways’ announcement to launch services between San José and London Heathrow will be well received by both business and leisure travellers in our region.”

Hainan Airlines has revealed that it will launch its first ever flights to the Californian city of San Jose this summer.

Announced in an official Weibo update, the Chinese airline said it will start operating five weekly services to the Silicon Valley hub, direct from Beijing, using its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Commencing in June this year, the new service will depart Beijing Capital International Airport every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1430, arriving at San Jose’s Norman Y Mineta International Airport at 1110. On the return leg, flights will depart Silicon Valley at 1310 and get back into Beijing at 1640 the next day.

The San Jose route will be operated using a 213-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, with 36 seats in business class and 177 in economy.

Unsurprisingly, it will be the first direct service from Beijing to San Jose, but not the first link from Asia; ANA currently flies direct between the Californian city and Tokyo, also using a Dreamliner.

San Jose will become Hainan Airlines’ fifth destination in North America, following Toronto, Seattle, Chicago and Boston, all of which operate from Beijing. And the carrier is also planning to fly from Shanghai to Seattle and Boston this year.
