China’s Hainan province has announced the launch of its first intercontinental route between Sanya and London after China unveiled its plan to build Hainan Island into its pilot international free-trade zone.

The maiden voyage carried 214 passengers on a non-stop flight from Sanya’s Phoenix International Airport on 12 July and it was filled to 99% capacity. This new flight route not only links Hainan and Europe, but also adds a UK stop to Hainan’s international flights.

The launching ceremony for the maiden voyage was held by the provincial government of Hainan and China Southern Airlines Company Limited.

Development of the aviation industry

China Southern Airlines’ CZ651 departs Sanya at 1300 CST every Thursday and Sunday, and arrives in London at 1845 BST. For the return journey, CZ652 departs London at 2210 BST and arrives in Sanya at 1620 CST the next day. The total flight time is about 12 hours and 45 minutes.

“Attract more visitors from the UK to spend their holidays in Sanya”

The British Consulate General Guangzhou acting consul general Andrew Ould said, “Hainan is facilitating the construction of China’s free-trade zone. I believe that the launch of the direct flight between Sanya and London will help attract more visitors from the UK to spend their holidays in Sanya and UK-based companies to invest and establish facilities in the city.” Ould also shared several favourable policies concerning UK tourists applying for visas.

A Dong, mayor of Sanya, said that since Europe has become a popular destination among Chinese tourists, Sanya’s tourism service providers have also increased their focus on the European market, especially London. The route between Sanya and London is a step towards implementing Hainan’s strategy to allow travellers from 59 countries to enjoy visa-free access to Sanya and will help Sanya deepen communication, trade, and cultural and tourism exchanges with the UK and Europe and contributes to Hainan’s status as an international free-trade zone.

Sanya has witnessed incredible growth in its tourism industry. A year-on-year growth in inbound tours have encouraged airlines to accelerate international expansion. Sanya recorded approximately 450,000 visitors in 2016 and that figure increased to 700,000 in 2017.

Sanya, China’s top destination for island tourism, received a total of 620,000 inbound tourists by the end of November of 2017, representing year-on-year growth of 70 percent. The tropical city at the southern end of China is expected to receive more than 18 million visitors by the end of the year, setting a record for tourism there.

In addition to the increase in tourists, the number of international flights to Sanya has increased by 64 percent year-on-year, and foreign exchange earnings from tourism have risen by 131.09 percent year-on-year.

According to Mr. Fan Mu, the director of the Sanya Tourism Development Commission, the growth in visitors comes from investments in the region’s infrastructure and eased visa policies. “The world is discovering Sanya,” said Fan Wu. “With easy access to its beautiful tropical landscape, incredible local and international cuisine and rich cultural heritage, Sanya is a paradise-in-waiting all travelers. With the government’s new open policy, more international travelers can come to Sanya and explore the wonders of our tropical island.”

China’s welcoming policy for Hainan means that travellers from 26 countries can obtain a 15-day visa upon arrival in the city, with groups from some countries able to stay even longer, and citizens of a few others able to visit the island for 15 days with no visa required at all:

Tourism officials from the Chinese beach resort of Sanya have held a promotional event in Indonesia, with the aim of attracting more visitors from Southeast Asia’s largest country.

The “2017 Sanya Celebration” was held in Jakarta and featured two parts: an industry roadshow and a promotional meeting, which attracted almost 150 industry personnel and journalists, and an exhibition area which promoted Sanya through photo galleries, virtual reality games, food displays and cultural performances.

The event forms part of the local government’s efforts to enhance Sanya’s popularity among international travellers. The city welcomed 4.95 million visitors in the first quarter of 2017, but only 157,000 – about 3% – of these were non-Chinese.

“Sanya aims to become a top tourism destination with its natural beauty and varied culturally themed projects,” said Deng Zhong, president of the Sanya People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. “We hope to attract more overseas visitors to travel, work and live in the city, and more investors to explore new investment opportunities as well.”

Indonesia has been identified as a target by Sanya due to its large population and strong air connectivity with China. Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air recently launched a new route connecting Jakarta with Haikou, the capital Hainan province, which lies 218km from Sanya.

In addition to the Indonesian promotion, the Sanya Celebration events will be held in Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Russia, the UK, Germany, Singapore and India.

Sanya, the beach resort that attracts millions of Chinese tourists each year, is aiming to lure more international visitors.

Reporting its visitor figures for the first half of 2016, the Sanya Tourism Development Commission (STDC) revealed that the Hainan resort city attracted 192,000 overseas visitors in the six-month period, including arrivals from ‘Greater China’ markets such as Hong Kong. This marked a 13.6% year-on-year increase, but the figure remains just a small fraction of Sanya’s total 7.82 million tourist arrivals for the period.

Nevertheless, STDC director Fan Mu said he was happy with the upward trend.

“I am delighted with the steady growth of visitor arrivals, and the investment we have put into positioning Sanya as a major international tourist destination is beginning to show returns,” he stated.

Hong Kong is the largest source of non-mainland Chinese visitors to Sanya, followed by Russia and South Korea. And the destination’s international appeal could be broadened by the launch of new air routes. Three new services arrived at Sanya’s Phoenix International Airport in the first half of 2016, connecting the city with Frankfurt, Ho Chi Minh City and Kaohsiung.

That takes the total number of new international routes to Sanya launched since the start of 2015 to 14, including services from Japan, South Korea, Russia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. Passenger traffic at Sanya’s Phoenix International Airport increased 3.9% to 8.79m in the first half of 2016.

In an effort to drum up more international business, the STDC has recently conducted 32 missions to key source markets, including attendance at global travel trade events. It has also expanded its digital footprint with new websites in Japanese, Korean and Russian, and accounts on six major overseas social networks and travel platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and TripAdvisor.

The government of China is planning to establish Hainan as an international tourist destination along the lines of Hawaii or Bali, and the island province has been designated a “special economic zone” in an effort to hasten its development.

The Chinese beach resort of Sanya is aiming to lure more international tourists with a new global campaign.

Launched by the Sanya Tourism Development Commission, the ‘Sanya Hearts to Hearts’ online campaign will aim to develop brand awareness and improve the reputation of Sanya among international travellers. The campaign was unveiled in a major ceremony this week, attended by more than 200 local tourism stakeholders and guests.

At the event, Fan Mu, director of Sanya Tourism Development Commission, said he plans to “leverage the power of internet to improve the efficiency of tourism industry and ultimately create its core competitive edge”.

The ‘Sanya Hearts to Hearts’ campaign will run for five months and will lead to the appointment of five “promotion ambassadors” for the destination.

Sanya is the main resort on the Chinese island of Hainan, which the Chinese government is aiming to develop as a major international destination to rival Hawaii, Phuket or Bali. The island welcomed 53 million visitors in 2015, but only a small fraction of these were non-Chinese.

Hainan’s tourism department has set a target of 58.7m visitors in 2016, including 640,000 from overseas, and 80m visitors, including 1.2m international arrivals, by 2020.
