Scoot has become the first low-cost carrier, and the first airline in the Asia Pacific region, to be featured on Skyscanner’s Direct Booking platform.

Skyscanner is a meta-search site which aggregates fares from other sources. Usually, when booking a fare via Skyscanner, users are directed to the supplier’s site. But with Direct Booking they can complete the transaction without leaving Skyscanner. This is available via the company’s desktop and mobile platforms.

The first phase of roll-out, initially to the Australia, Singapore, India and UK markets, will enable Skyscanner users to search for and book Scoot’s fares directly within Skyscanner site. Ancillary services such as baggage and preferred seating will be added in future.

Filip Filipov, Skyscanner’s director of product, commented; “We believe our powerful direct booking capability is good for customers who can complete their booking with as little friction as possible, and good for airlines, giving our partners like Scoot the ability to showcase their ancillary product options directly to the booking customer.”

The Direct Booking partnership comes thanks to the recent integration of the Navitaire reservation system into Skyscanner’s platform.

Singapore Airlines Group has posted a sharp rise in profits for the first half of its financial year, despite the fact that its revenues decreased.

The group’s operating profit for the six months to 30 September 2015 jumped 40.4% to SG$240 million (US$172m), while its net profit surged 142% to SG$305m. These results were achieved despite a 4.5% drop in revenue, to SG$7.24 billion.

Falling fuel costs were the main driver of SIA’s rising profits, as the group saved SG$1.16bn following a 41% drop in the average price of jet fuel compared to the same period in 2014. These savings were partially eroded however, by the fact that SIA hedged its fuel purchases at a higher-than-average price. In total, SIA’s group expenditure fell 5.7% to SG$6.99bn.

The main national carrier, Singapore Airlines, posted an operating profit of SG$206m in the first half of 2015, up 12.6% year-on-year, while SilkAir’s profits jumped 420% to SG$26m. Scoot halved its operating loss, to SG$22m, while Tiger Airways recorded a loss of SG$10m.

Despite the rising profits, SIA provided a cautious outlook for the remainder of the year, citing uncertain economic conditions and China’s slowing economy as potential areas of concern. It also noted that yields remain “under pressure”, due to extra capacity being added by rival airlines.

“Faced with these challenges, the group will maintain strict cost discipline,” SIA said. It added however, that it remains “well placed to retain its competitive edge”.

SIA’s airlines carried a total of 15.04 million passengers in the first half, up 1.4% year-on-year, while load factors averaged 80.0%, up half a percentage point.

Scoot will start operating the SingaporeHangzhou route on 25 October 2015, in place of SilkAir.

SilkAir currently operates the route four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) using a single-aisle aircraft.

But Scoot will deploy its twin-aisle Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Hangzhou, offering more seat capacity. And the frequency of the route will be increased to five weekly flights from December 2015, with the addition of a new Saturday service.

Singapore Airlines Group, which operates both airlines, said that using Scoot would “better match of capacity to demand”.

“Scoot is thrilled to add another great city such as Hangzhou to our growing network,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson.

“Hangzhou will be our fifth destination in China, in addition to services to Tianjin, Shenyang, Qingdao and Nanjing. It is also the fourth new route added to Scoot’s network in the last eight months after Kaohsiung, Osaka and Melbourne. We look forward to offering guests great value travel to Hangzhou aboard our new 787 Dreamliners.”

Passengers who have made advance bookings to fly the Singapore‐Hangzhou route on SilkAir can opt for a refund or be re‐accommodated either on Scoot’s new services or on Singapore Airlines’ flights to Shanghai.

Singapore Airlines Group has posted a sharp rise in profits for the first quarter of its financial year, despite a drop in revenues.

The company generated an operating profit of SG$111 million (US$81m) for the three months to 30 June 2015, up 185% compared to the SG$39m posted in the same period last year.

But this was largely driven by falling costs, rather than rising sales. The group’s expenditure fell 5.2% to SG$3.45 billion in the quarter, while revenues declined 3.2% to SG$3.57bn. The majority of the cost savings were achieved through lower fuel prices.

But the result could have been even better, were it not for the fact that SIA is locked into hedging contracts to purchase fuel at previous higher prices. Before hedging, SIA’s fuel costs declined SG$468m (-33.3%), but taking the contracts into account, SIA only managed to cut its fuel bill by SG$182m, or 13.3%.

SIA also saved SG$12m from the removal of Tiger Airways from its results, although the company said this was partially offset by losses from Vistara and Virgin Australia.

By unit, national carrier SIA posted an operating profit of SG$108m in the first quarter, up 140% year-on-year, while SilkAir’s profits jumped 150% to SG$5m. The performance of the airline’s engineering unit was flat, while SIA’s cargo losses were halved.

In terms of operations, SIA saw a 4.2% decline in traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), while average passenger load factor fell 1.4 percentage points to 76.3%. SilkAir‘s traffic increased 8.2%, with load factors rising 0.6 points to 70.1%, while Scoot saw an 11.0% jump in traffic and a 2.9% rise in load factors, to 81.4%.

Finally, Tigerair’s passenger traffic declined 8.5%, largely due to a reduction of capacity. But it did manage to retain relatively high load factors of 83.5%.

Moving forward, SIA said that advance passenger bookings for the July-September quarter are “higher year-on-year”. It added however, that “there is weaker demand for Americas and Europe regions, reflecting the competitive environment”. Yields are also expected to remain under pressure.

Scoot, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier, has added two new Asian cities to its route map: Osaka and Kaohsiung.

The airline started flying to Osaka on 8 July, when flight TZ298 took off from Singapore’s Changi Airport. The service will now run three times a week (every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday), with a stop in Bangkok.

Then a day later on 9 July, the inaugural flight TZ288 departed Singapore bound for Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan. This service will now run every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and will continue onwards from Kaohsiung to Osaka, meaning that Scoot now flies to the Japanese city six times a week.

Both routes will be operated by Scoot’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which offers 375 seats in two classes, and in-flight Wi-Fi.

“Scoot is thrilled to offer travellers the historical and culinary delights of Osaka, and the natural scenic beauty of Kaohsiung,” said the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson. “We’re excited to bring our Osaka and Kaohsiung guests the Scoot experience – brand-new aircraft, a huge selection of frills, unbeatable value airfares and of course our fun and unique attitude.”

Scoot will continue to upgrade its services to Japan and Taiwan in September this year, when its starts deploying its Dreamliners to Taipei and Tokyo.

The addition of Kaohsiung and Osaka boosts Scoot’s total network to 15 destinations in seven countries.

The aircraft also features an image of Singapore’s famous Merlion statue.

“Scoot is so very proud to call Singapore home. This young nation has achieved remarkable success in a short time through vision and hard work, and is a great inspiration to a young airline like Scoot. We are proud to join the SG50 celebrations and show that pride on an aircraft that will be seen around the world for months to come,” said Scoot CEO, Campbell Wilson.

Scoot was at pains to keep the special livery a secret. The Dreamliner rolled out of Boeing‘s factory with only the tail section painted and arrived at the paint factory under cover of darkness. It then underwent seven-day paint job, some of which was even done by hand.

Scoot will increase the number of flights it operates to Bangkok this summer, with the deployment of its brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner to the city.

From 8 July 2015, the Singaporean low-cost carrier will add three more weekly flights to its existing daily service to the Thai capital’s Don Mueang Airport, taking the total frequency to 10 flights per week.

And all of these flights will be operated using Scoot’s new 375-seat, two-class B787-9 aircraft, which will be deployed on the Bangkok route from May.

“The additional services to Don Mueang will give our guests more choice and options. The new convenient departure time from Singapore means you’ll arrive into Bangkok just in time for… lunch,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson. “And in May this year, we’ll be introducing the 787 Dreamliner to Thailand, offering our guests better in-flight experience.”

The three extra weekly flights to Bangkok will depart Singapore’s Changi Airport every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 0845, arriving at Don Mueang Airport at 1010. The return flights then leave Bangkok at 0330 the next morning, getting back into Singapore at 0645.

This will complement the existing 1735 daily departure from Singapore, which returns from Bangkok at 2015 (moving to 2045 from 29 March 2015).

Scoot launched its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the SingaporePerth route yesterday, marking the start of a new era for the low-cost carrier, as it moves towards an all-B787 fleet.

And speaking to Travel Daily on Friday morning, Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, said the new aircraft is “all we had hoped for and more”.

Scoot has ordered 20 B787s, including 10 375-seat B787-9s – the type that operated the inaugural route – and 10 335-seat B787-8s, which will start being delivered later this year. Both versions will come equipped with two seating classes, economy and ScootBiz, with in-seat power outlets, Wi-Fi and in-flight entertainment streaming. The aircraft will also feature child-free ‘ScootinSilence’ areas.

Wilson told Travel Daily that the new aircraft will have a “significant impact” on Scoot’s operations.

“From an economic perspective they are incredible fuel-efficient,” he said. “[Fuel accounts for] 40-50% of our operating costs, so this will help significantly.” He added that ownership and maintenance costs would also be reduced.

Scoot will receive 11 B787s this financial year, the first six of which will be used to replace its old B777-200s. By August 2015 it will become the first airline in the world to operate an all-B787 fleet.

Following the Perth launch (which will be linked to Hong Kong, via Singapore), Scoot plans to roll out the new aircraft on its Sydney-Singapore service, continuing onwards to Bangkok. The Gold Coast will also welcome the new jets this year.

In terms of new routes, Wilson revealed that new North Asian destinations would be added in June and July this year, followed by the previous-announced Melbourne service in November.

And the airline’s future focus will be on “Australia, China, Japan, Korea, India”, according to Wilson. “New Zealand is not on our radar,” he said, and while European destinations are “not something in the immediate planning”, the CEO added that they weren’t out of the question. “Never say never,” Wilson told us.

Moving forward, Wilson said the 20 B787s Scoot has ordered will be enough for the airline’s immediate growth plans. “It already more than triples out fleet, so that’s quite significant growth.” He didn’t rule out further orders in future, but will “probably not” opt for the largest version of the Dreamliner, the B787-10.

Scoot's first Dreamliner takes off from the Boeing factory in Seattle, bound for Singapore

Scoot took delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft today, marking a major milestone in the airline’s development.

The Singapore-based low-cost carrier has ordered 20 Dreamliners, and the aircraft will eventually make up its entire fleet. The aircraft that touched down at Singapore’s Changi Airport on 2 February 2015 was the larger B787-9 model, seating 375 passengers in a two-class layout. Deliveries of smaller 335-seat B787-8s will commence later this year.

“This is a great moment for all of us at Scoot and the start of a new chapter in our short but exciting history,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “[The Dreamliner] will allow us to triple in size, add new destinations, increase frequencies and grow the Singapore hub, all whilst continuing to offer unbeatable value airfares.

“New and improved seats, streaming movies, in-flight internet connectivity add to all of the choices and options Scoot already provides. And not to mention the 787’s inherent advantages such as larger windows, more comfortable cabin pressure and humidity, larger stowage bins, a smoother ride, lower noise, reduced emissions, and a step-change in operating economics,” he added.

The first B787-9 is appropriately named ‘Dream Start’. It comes equipped with 340 seats in economy class and 35 in ‘ScootBiz’, Scoot’s premium economy-style offering. The aircraft will initially be introduced on the Singapore-Perth and Singapore-Hong Kong routes.

Scoot will now continue taking delivery of its B787-9s in the coming months, with the first B787-8s expected to start arriving in the third quarter of 2015.

The new aircraft will gradually replace Scoot’s existing fleet of B777-200s, which are being leased from Singapore Airlines. Eventually, Scoot will operate an all-B787 fleet.

Scoot and Tigerair Singapore are strengthening their partnership, teaming up on new routes, coordinating schedules and integrating their reservations systems.

The two low-cost carriers, which are both subsidiaries of Singapore Airlines, were granted anti-trust immunity (ATI) last year to work closer together. And from early January, the airlines started operating joint venture services on two routes – SingaporeHong Kong and Singapore-Bangkok.

This cooperation will deepen next month when Scoot boosts the frequency of its Singapore-Perth service to daily and Tigerair pulls out of the route.

“We have long maintained that Tigerair and Scoot are natural partners, and the early gains from our new phase of co-operation reinforce this belief,” said Lee Lik Hsin, group CEO of Tigerair. “The upcoming roll-out of joint-venture routes, deeper system integration and schedule coordination will further strengthen both partners and, most importantly, provide greater convenience and flight options to our guests.”

Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, added that the airlines are seeing “significant early benefits” from the partnership, including a “rise in connecting passenger volumes”.

The two carriers are also working towards further cooperation in future, including enabling bookings of each other’s flights on both airlines’ websites, common ground handling operations and service centres, and joint procurement.

Scoot‘s Australian expansion has gathered pace following the signing of a codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia.

Recently, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier announced plans to launch its first flights to Melbourne in 2015, and to increase the frequency of its Perth service to daily flights. This will also see the Western Australian capital become the first destination to receive Scoot’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

And the airline has now added eight more Australian destinations to its route map, as part of a new codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia.

Passengers on Scoot’s existing flights from Singapore to Sydney, Perth and Gold Coast will be able to connect to Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Cairns, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne and Uluru, on flights operated by Virgin.

“Australia was Scoot’s very first destination and, since launching flight to Sydney in June 2012 we’ve added Gold Coast, Perth and, soon, Melbourne. Our new partnership with Virgin Australia expands our coverage of Australia yet further, so whether it’s north, south, east or west, Scoot – and Virgin – have Australia covered,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot.

Scoot is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, which also holds a 19.9% stake in Virgin Australia.

Singaporean low-cost carrier, Scoot, is continuing its Australian expansion with the start of daily Dreamliner flights to Perth.

The new operation will commence on 1 February 2015, marking an upgrade from the airline’s existing five weekly Singapore-Perth flights, which are operated using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. Perth will be the launch route for Scoot’s new fleet of B787 Dreamliners.

This follows hot-on-the-heels of Scoot’s announcement that it will launch flights to Melbourne in November next year, also using its new Dreamliner.

“Having flown close to 150,000 guests to and from Perth, we’re thrilled with the fantastic response to this route in the past 12 months,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot.  “I’m also pleased to announce that starting in early 2015, Perth will be the inaugural destination for our 787 Dreamliner.

“Scoot’s 787s will deliver better comfort, a wider selection of amenities including on-board Wi-Fi, while enabling us to maintain our great value airfares so our guests can get outta here more often,” he added.

Scoot currently operates to three Australia hubs – Sydney, Gold Coast and Perth – with Melbourne flights commencing on 1 November 2015. The Perth route will be operated using the larger B787-9 Dreamliner, which is expected to feature 375 seats in a two-class layout.

NokScoot, the new Bangkok-based airline, has taken a major step towards its launch with the unveiling of its aircraft livery and staff uniforms.

The long-haul low-cost carrier, which is a joint venture between Thailand’s Nok Air and Singapore’s Scoot, will carry a distinctive aircraft design, combining Scoot’s yellow and white livery with Nok’s trademark bird’s beak on the front of the cockpit. The NokScoot logo is also painted on the tailfin.

The Boeing 777-200 aircraft arrived at its new home base, Don Mueang International Airport, on 23 November 2014. The aircraft is named ‘พราว’ in Thai, which means ‘sparkling’.

“The design not only represents our spirit of adventure and exploration, but it also reflects who we are. Our fun, cheerfulness and friendliness will be present both in the air and on the ground at all airports,” said Piya Yodmani, NokScoot’s chief executive officer.

Meanwhile, NokScoot has also unveiled the design of its cabin crew uniforms, which feature a bright yellow and black colour scheme.

“We value simplicity and efficiency. As a result, the design looks quite minimalist, yet still smart. The design also allows our cabin crew to perform their duties comfortably,” Piya added.

NokScoot was first announced late last year, marking Nok Air’s launch into the long-haul market and allowing Scoot to establish a presence in Thailand. Set to take off in the first quarter of 2015, it will initially operate a fleet of Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

Based at Don Mueang, NokScoot will provide direct competition for Thai AirAsia X, which launched at the airport earlier this year. Other details, such as routes and cabin products, will be unveiled at a later date.

Singapore Airlines achieved a small increase in operating profits in the first half of its 2014-15 financial year.

In the six month period ending 30 September 2014, the group generated profits of SG$171 million (US$132m) – 1.2% higher than the first half of 2013.

This growth came despite a 2.0% drop in revenues, to SG$7.59 billion – a result SIA attributed to “changes in aircraft delivery slots” and “lower income from the… expiry of leases to Royal Brunei Airlines”. Group expenditure however, declined 2.1% to SG$7.42bn, resulting in the higher profits.

By unit, mainline carrier SIA generated operating profits of SG$183m, down 1.6% year-on-year, while income from regional carrier SilkAir slumped 77.3% to just SG$5m. The group’s overall improvement was the result of SIA Cargo slashing its losses from SG$71m to SG$34m.

SIA’s group net profit slumped 55.5% to SG$157m in the first half however, due to losses attributed to Tiger Airways, which is not included in the operating results.

The group took delivery of four new passenger aircraft in the most recent quarter, including two Airbus A330-300s for SIA and two Boeing 737-800s for SilkAir. The group’s total passenger fleet now stands at 135 aircraft, including 105 for SIA, 24 for SilkAir and six for Scoot.

While not making a profit forecast for the second half of the year, SIA did admit that “concerns persist” in terms of the “operating landscape [and] uncertain global economic climate”.

“Demand is generally flat and yields will remain under pressure amid intense competition from other airlines and promotional activities in weaker markets,” the company warned. “While there has been a reprieve from cost pressures arising from the decline in fuel prices in recent months, there is concern that the decline reflects a slowdown in major economies in the world which could ultimately hurt travel demand.

“The group will continue to track market movements closely and make appropriate adjustments to capacity, while practising cost discipline in all business areas.” It added however, that “the group is well positioned to meet the challenges ahead”.

Scoot touched down at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport for the first time this week, where it was met by its Thai partner, Nok Air.

The Singaporean carrier has shifted its Bangkok operations from Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang, where a new interline partnership with Nok will enable Scoot to offer a series of connecting flights to destinations across Thailand. Nok will also handle Scoot’s ground operations at Don Mueang.

“The interline service between Nok Air and Scoot will offer passengers access to Nok Air’s extensive domestic coverage, and Scoot’s extensive international network,” said Patee Sarasin, CEO of Nok Air.

“Passengers on Nok Air can connect to Scoot’s international flights, and international passengers can connect on Nok Air to any destination within Thailand. This will allow more international passengers to visit different parts of Thailand with more ease and comfort with just one single booking.”

Moving forward, the two airlines are also planning to create a brand new long-haul low-cost carrier, NokScoot, which will also be based at Don Mueang. This will provide direct competition to Thai AirAsia X which recently launched at the same airport.

Asia is setting new trends in long-haul low-cost air travel, and China is likely to become a key regional player in the coming years, according to a new report by aviation analysts OAG.

Titled ‘Generation X – Long-Haul Low-Cost Comes Of Age’, the analysis shows that following the launch of Asia’s first long-haul LCC, Malaysia’s AirAsia X, more budget airlines are seeking to expand their route networks to take advantage of growing traffic between Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and increasingly South Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

“The LCC sector in Asia is experiencing strong growth with massive potential demand supported by fast-growing economies and rising demand for intra-regional travel.” the OAG report stated.

“Although low-cost air travel originated in Europe and North America to connect destinations typically within four hours’ flying time, Asian LCCs are adapting the model for locations up to eight hours apart. This enables cost-conscious Asian travellers to fly to new destinations for which flights were either previously unavailable or were priced too high.”

AirAsia X has since been joined in the market by Jetstar, Scoot and Thai AirAsia X, a new Bangkok-based subsidiary. Broadly speaking, these carriers are connecting regional destinations in Northeast Asia and Australia from their Southeast Asian homes. Cebu Pacific and PAL Express are also serving the Philippines-Middle East sectors.

In the near future, Cebu Pacific will launch services to Australia, while Scoot is preparing to launch a Bangkok-based joint venture with Nok Air. OAG also predicts the launch of AirAsia X in Indonesia.

But looking at the future potential of this market, the report found that China could hold the key. Analysing the region’s top 20 country pairs in terms of seat capacity growth between June 2010 and June 2014, China was found to feature in eight of the fastest growing markets. There was double-digit growth on routes connecting China with both Australia (+11%) and Thailand (+20%). Here, existing LCCs like Spring Airlines could thrive, alongside a multitude of new market entrants.

China’s aviation authorities recently abolished the minimum pricing requirement for airlines, and introduced new measures designed to encourage the development of Chines LCCs. This has led to the formation of many new carriers, including Guangzhou-based 9 Air and Hangzhou’s Zhejiang Loong Airlines.

“Given the potential impact of the recent changes made by the Civil Aviation Administration of China to the rules governing the establishment and operation of LCCs, the opportunities are now available for a major Chinese low-cost carrier to emerge or for a major Chinese carrier to make a play for regional markets,” said Mark Clarkson, OAG’s business development director for Asia Pacific.

And there is room for further growth, with only three routes from China – Shanghai-Singapore (ranked fifth), Bangkok-Shanghai (19th), and Beijing-Singapore (23rd) – listed in OAG’s top 25 low-cost, long-haul routes in Asia Pacific.

The top international routes are Bangkok-Seoul, Singapore-Sydney, Singapore-Taipei, Hong Kong-Tokyo, Seoul-Singapore, Melbourne-Singapore and Bangkok-Tokyo.

Under the terms of the five-year deal, Boeing Flight Services will provide B787 flight training to Scoot pilots at Boeing’s Singapore training campus. Initially in 2014, 32 Scoot pilots will undergo training.

“We are proud to provide Scoot… with the industry’s best flight training as they add the 787 to their fleet,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president of Boeing Flight Services. “Aviation opportunities for airlines and pilots are expanding rapidly in the Asia Pacific region, and we’re pleased to offer a robust network of experienced instructors and training devices close to our customers across the region.”

Boeing projects that Asia Pacific-based airlines will need 498,000 new pilots and 556,000 new maintenance technicians over the next 20 years. In Southeast Asia alone, the demand is for 51,500 pilots and 64,700 technicians.

“This is an exciting time for Scoot, as we expand our services throughout the Asia Pacific region, and work with Boeing for world-class flight training,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s chief executive officer.

Scoot will acquire 20 B787s, with deliveries beginning in late 2014. These new aircraft will gradually replace the carrier’s fleet of B777-200s.

Scoot has unveiled the details of its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are due to join the airline’s fleet this year.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) initially ordered 20 Dreamliners back in 2006, and later transferred them to its low-cost long-haul unit. The order comprises 10 B787-8 Dreamliners and 10 larger B787-9s. And Scoot has now revealed its plans for the cabin configurations and in-flight products to be used on the new aircraft, deliveries of which will start in November.

“Scoot has been operating for just over 18 months, in which time we’ve expanded to a fleet of six aircraft and 13 destinations, and carried more than two million guests. It’s been an extremely exciting and busy first phase for the airline, but just as exciting is what’s coming next: the induction of Boeing’s latest generation aircraft, the 787, from November 2014,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot.

The first Dreamliner to be delivered will be a B787-9, making Scoot the model’s second operator worldwide after Air New Zealand.

Economy class seats will all come equipped with power outlets
Economy class seats will all come equipped with power outlets

Scoot’s B787-9 will be configured to carry 375 passengers, with 35 reclining leather seats in the ‘ScootBiz’ business class cabin, in a 2-3-2 configuration, and 340 economy class seats in a 3-3-3 layout. All passengers will have access to in-seat power outlets and internet connectivity.

Deliveries of the B787-8s will start in mid-2015. These aircraft will have a total capacity of 330 seats, and the same products features as the B787-9.

“The 787’s ambiance, improved cabin humidity and larger windows, plus the new seats and amenities, will afford guests an even better experience than they already enjoy on our wide-body 777s. But, just as importantly, the economic advantages of this later generation aircraft – including a fuel-burn saving of around 20% per seat – ensure that costs and thus airfares can be kept low so that more people can travel more often,” Wilson added.
The destinations to be served by the first Dreamliner are yet to be confirmed, but by mid-2015 all Scoot flights are expected to be operated by B787s. The airline’s current fleet of 402-seat B777-200s will be progressively retired as the B787s are delivered.

Singapore-based low-cost carrier Scoot has committed to offering its fares to the travel trade, by signing a distribution agreement with Amadeus.

The new long-term content agreement will give Amadeus-connected travel agents access to the same fares, availability and functionality as any other travel agency content channel. It also extends Amadeus’ reach into the low-cost sector, following the GDS company’s recent tie-up with Tigerair.

“We are working tirelessly to expand our LCC content to offer the best, most relevant content for our travel agency customers. This is one step among many to deliver more budget air travel options via our network in the region,” added Angel Gallego, president of Amadeus Asia Pacific.

Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, said the partnership with Amadeus was a logical step for his airline.

“Travel agencies connect with our customers in another important way beyond our website or call centres. As the largest global distribution system with the widest network of travel agents, it makes sense for us to partner with Amadeus,” Wilson said.

Seventy low-cost and hybrid airlines are currently bookable via Amadeus.

Boeing 787-9 – Problems solved?

The new extended version of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is expected to enter service this year with Air New Zealand. Boeing has already sold almost 400 of the new planes, but have the problems experienced with the Boeing 787-8 all been fixed?

In-flight Wi-Fi – A better connection?

In-flight Wi-Fi services will be expanded in 2014, and as new technology is rolled out, connection speeds should start improving. And with the recent announcement that Thailand’s Nok Air will offer the service free-of-charge, can we expect other airlines to follow suit?

Yangon - too expensive?
Yangon – too expensive?

Myanmar – emerging giant or expensive luxury?

The emergence of Myanmar was a major news story in 2013, but what does the future hold? We can expect a surge of hotel development and increased air lift next year, but how will the country’s authorities manage its rapid development, and will customers by put off by high prices?

Space tourism – finally reaching the final frontier?

Two space tourism companies – Virgin Galactic and SXC – are planning to make their first commercial flights in 2014. Many wealthy and famous people have already signed-up for the flights, which will reach the very edge of Earth’s atmosphere. But will they launch on time, and will they be worth the money?

Indonesian hotel sector – Enough demand to meet new supply?

Hotel development in Indonesia is booming, with international companies like IHG, Accor and Best Western, and domestic chains like Archipelago and Tauzia, opening multiple new hotels. How will this huge upswing in new supply impact existing hotels, and what will be the hot new markets in 2014?

Scoot will launch its new Thai subsidiary next year

Airline mergers and joint ventures – Who’s next?

In recent years we’ve seen an unprecedented level of cooperation and expansion in the Asian aviation sector, most recently including Scoot joining forces with Nok Air and Tigerair tying up with China Airlines. Will these new ventures be successful, or will they go the way of AirAsia Japan?

Chinese airports – Greater choice or rising tempers?

China’s aviation industry will expand next year with multiple new passenger carriers entering the market. But with capacity at China’s major airports already pushed to the limit, will Chinese air passengers face further delays and frustrations?

Who's next on Etihad's wish-list?
Who’s next on Etihad’s wish-list?

Etihad Airways – The next steps to world domination?

The UAE national carrier continued its strategy of buying half the world’s airlines in 2013, taking stakes in Jet Airways, Air Serbia and Darwin Airline. So who’s next on Etihad’s radar, and can we expect to see the airline taking a greater interest in Asia’s rapidly growing aviation sector?

Island wars – How will Asia’s territorial rows develop?

With China casting its net across vast swathes of the East and South China Seas, could we see heightened tensions in the region in 2014? If it tries to impose another ‘air defence zone’ in the South China Sea, China would be on a potential collision course with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Two new low-cost carriers will emerge in Asia next year, following a series of joint venture deals between the region’s carriers.

Thailand’s Nok Air and Singapore’s Scoot have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a new airline called ‘NokScoot’, which will be based at Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport.

And Tigerair has sealed a new joint venture with China Airlines that will see the creation of a new Taipei-based budget carrier called Tigerair Taiwan.

NokScoot will feature a similar business model to Scoot, operating wide-body aircraft on medium- and long-haul international routes. Nok will hold up to 51% in the new carrier, with Scoot taking the remaining 49%. Initial investment in the airline will be THB2 billion (US$62 million).

“We are excited at the prospect of expanding Nok’s presence overseas, and to be doing so with the assistance of Scoot. It has always been Nok’s goal to offer Thais more choice and more value, of which this venture is yet another example. We’re also excited at the opportunity to encourage more inbound tourists, to boost the Thai economy,” said Nok Air’s CEO, Patee Sarasin.

Meanwhile Tigerair Taiwan will be independently managed, with Tigerair holding 10% of the new carrier. With initial capital of approximately TW$2bn (US$67m), the new carrier will primarily operate short-haul routes to destinations in Northeast Asia. It will become the fifth Tigerair-branded subsidiary, following existing units in Singapore, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

“We are delighted to forge this partnership with China Airlines. The new JV will allow us to extend our presence into the new, untapped markets of Taiwan, Japan, and Korea,” said Tigerair’s Group CEO, Koay Peng Yen. “There is vast potential for growth in these markets and also areas of synergy to be explored between the two airlines. With an established partner in China Airlines, we are confident of building a strong and sustainable budget carrier.”

NokScoot will mainly complete against AirAsia’s new Bangkok-based medium- and long-haul unit, Thai AirAsia X, while Tigerair Taiwan becomes the second new Taiwanese LCC to be formed in recent weeks, following the announcement of TransAsia Airways’ new budget carrier.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) achieved a sharp rise in profits in the first half of its financial year.

The group generated net profits of SG$282 million (US$226m) in the six months to 30 September 2013, 67.9% higher than the same period last year. SIA attributed the result to “the sale of aircraft and higher share of profits from associated and joint venture companies”. This includes a gain of SG$339.2m following the sale of its stake in Virgin Atlantic to Delta Air Lines.

The group’s revenue increased 2.2% to SG$7.74 billion in the first half, outpacing a 1.9% rise in expenses, which totalled SG$7.57bn. This resulted in a 19.0% jump in operating profits, to SG$169m.

Mainline carrier SIA carried a total of 9.4m passengers in the first half, 4.0% up year-on-year, while SilkAir’s traffic increased 3.6% to 1.7m.

In the last three months, SIA has taken delivery of four new aircraft – two A330-300s and two Boeing 777-300ERs. It also sold one B777-200 and decommissioned another, in preparation its lease to low-cost subsidiary, Scoot. One A340-500 will also be sold back to Airbus. As a result, SIA’s operating fleet now comprises 103 passenger aircraft – 56 B777s, 24 A330-300s, 19 A380-800s and four A340-500s. SilkAir operates 23 aircraft – 17 A320-200s and six A319-100s – while Scoot has six B777-200s.

Despite the positive results, SIA warned that the landscape for the airline industry “remains challenging”.

“Advance bookings for the coming months are projected to be higher compared to the same period last year on the back of efforts to boost loads. However, ongoing promotional activities necessitated by intense competition and a strong Singapore dollar are expected to place pressure on yields,” the airline said.

It added however, that the group’s financial condition “remains strong”, although it will “continue to monitor market conditions closely and respond appropriately, while maintaining vigilance in cost management”.

Scoot has become the latest airline to offer passengers the option of flying in quiet, child-free sections of the cabin.

A new product called ‘ScootinSilence’ will see the Singapore-based airline reserve 41 seats of its Boeing 777 aircraft for passengers wanting to travel in peace and quiet. Located in rows 21 to 25, behind the ‘ScootBiz’ cabin, ScootinSilence will be available only to passengers above the age of 12. Seats will also have a pitch of 35 inches – four more than Scoot’s standard economy class seats.

“ScootinSilence is the perfect option for guests seeking an exclusive cabin, extra legroom and confidence that under 12s will be seated in another part of the aircraft,” said the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson.

“No offence to our young guests or those travelling with them – you still have the rest of the aircraft,” he added.

Earlier this year, Scoot’s long-haul low-cost rival AirAsia X launched a similar scheme, while Malaysia Airlines also has child-free areas on some of its long-haul aircraft.

Low-cost and full-service airlines in the Asia Pacific region are diversifying their business models and could eventually “meet in the middle”, according to a senior industry professional.

Speaking to Travel Daily, Ho Hoong Mau, division head of airline distribution at Abacus International, said he was speaking to more LCCs about selling via GDS channels, marking a shift from the traditional ‘pure play’ model that saw LCCs sell only direct to the customer.

“We’ve made some good announcements with LCCs recently, and continue to strengthen our LCC portfolio. Abacus LCC booking volumes are up over 80% year-on-year; some of our recent LCC customers are driving very good numbers in our system. Jeju Air is doing very well, as are StarFlyer, Air Busan and PAL Express, all of which are exclusive to Abacus. Mihin Lanka also joined us last year. We’re gaining a lot of traction in this market,” said Ho.

He added that as more LCCs move towards hybrid models, they will be more suited to the GDS.

“Some pure play LCCs may decide they don’t want GDS representation, and that’s fine. But we are having great conversations with LCCs and many airlines are starting to realise that multi-channel distribution will drive the best returns.

“As the LCC models get more complex, more airlines are deciding to work with us. Many new LCCs, such as Scoot, decided to deploy a GDS from day one. Others will develop over time. Cebu Pacific for example, used to be pure play, but now they’re going medium-haul they’ll need to expand their sales channels,” he added.

Ho also noted that the development of multiple brands among both full-service and low-cost airlines is blurring the boundaries between the two sectors.

“We have seen more airlines in Asia forming multi-brands as well as new JV companies to build up a portfolio of assets to capture more of the market. Lion Air now has Batik Air, which is full-service, and Malindo Air, which is a hybrid model. VietJet has just announced a JV in Thailand (with Kan Air) and we all already know about Tiger and AirAsia spread of JV companies across Asia.

“The full-service airlines are also forming multi-brands; Singapore Airlines now has Scoot and Tiger to access the low-cost segment and SilkAir to assess the premium regional segment. Thai Airways has Thai Smile and Nok Air. The lines are getting increasingly blurred between full-service, hybrid and low-cost, and eventually these airlines could eventually meet somewhere in the middle,” Ho said.

But Ho noted that one area the low-cost and hybrid carriers have still not conquered is the long-haul market.

AirAsia was one of the pioneers of the he 'pure play' business model
AirAsia was one of the pioneers of the he ‘pure play’ business model

“The economics are against it,” Ho said. “On long-haul flights you carry more fuel, so fuel becomes a larger percentage of your costs, and if fuel prices remain high that becomes a major factor. Long-haul also makes it harder for airlines to get away with a pure low-cost product. On flights of 10 hours you want some frills, but these add weight and cost. Also for consumers there is still a mental cut-off for long-haul. On flights of two hours, low-cost is no problem. Four or five hours – perhaps. But 10 hours? Many consumers are not buying into it yet.”

And while there are several so-called ‘long-haul low-cost carriers’ in the marketplace, Ho predicted that players like Scoot, AirAsia X and Cebu Pacific “will try to build up their regional networks first” before going long-haul.

And as the boundaries between business models are lowered, Ho believes that Abacus is now well-paced to serve the market.

“In the last couple of years we’ve got better at segmenting our product. We have different versions of our products for LCCs, and now our portfolio is quite large,” he said. “We just did a North Asia conference in Seoul in June, which brought together about 50 of our high value customers for two days of discussions, and a lot of new business leads were generated.

“So overall we’re in a good place. Our LCC portfolio continues to grow and our mainstream full service airlines continue to rely on Abacus to drive high yield corporate business,” Ho concluded.

Singapore-based low-cost carrier, Scoot, has unveiled a new in-flight entertainment option that enables passengers to stream content to their mobile devices.

ScooTV, as the service will be known, will offer a range of movies and TV shows that passengers can stream to their own laptop or tablet during flight. Content will be updated every other month. The service is free in ScootBiz, the airline’s premium economy-type cabin, with prices starting from SG$15 (US$12) in economy class. Passengers without their own devices can also rent tablets while in-flight.

“Scoot is excited to be the first airline in Asia to offer this innovative in-flight entertainment option. Going wireless keeps our aircraft lighter, our costs down and our fares cheaper. And better yet, ScooTV empowers our guests with even more entertainment options,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson.

In addition to ScooTV, the airline has also announced the launch of a new range of in-flight meal options. The new ‘Premium Selection’ meals, which include a main dish plus a drink and two side options, tailored to suit each route.

SIA has ordered 20 Dreamliners for Scoot

Scoot is scheduled to take delivery of the first of 20 Dreamliners in late 2014, from an order placed by parent company Singapore Airlines (SIA) back in 2006. And despite the recent technical issues experienced by ANA and Japan Airlines, Scoot’s CEO Campbell Wilson told Travel Daily he was confident the delivery schedule would be maintained.

“Boeing are keeping us informed of the situation, and we are monitoring the situation closely ourselves. But we’re still planning to take the delivery of our first aircraft at the end of 2014 as planned,” Wilson told Travel Daily by phone this week. He added however, that Scoot “would not operate any aircraft we didn’t have 100% confidence in”.

SIA’s order was initially for 20 of the larger B787-9s, but will now comprise a mix of B787-8s and B787-9s. Scoot currently operates a fleet of B777-200s.

Several airlines have pledged their commitment to the B787 since the FAA ordered its grounding last week. Korean Air said it expected deliveries to get underway as scheduled from 2016, while Qantas said it was confident that problems would be resolved before deliveries to Jetstar commence later this year. Last week Qantas cancelled one Dreamliner order, cutting the total from 15 to 14 aircraft, but this is not believed to be related to the recent problems.

Boeing has so far delivered 50 out of a total of 848 Dreamliners.

Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) new low-cost carrier, Scoot, has agreed to acquire 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The new aircraft, which will be delivered from 2014 onwards, will be used to replace Scoot’s Boeing 777-200 fleet, which had been transferred to the LCC from SIA.

“Since commencing operations in June 2012, Scoot has quickly established itself as a low-cost airline with a difference,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “Scoot has quickly grown to a fleet of four aircraft and a network soon to encompass nine cities. Today’s announcement that we’ll be acquiring 20 Boeing 787s to power our growth is exciting news and great for our guests – not least because the aircraft’s fuel-efficiency will help keep ticket prices low.”

The 20 Dreamliners were originally ordered by parent company SIA, and will now be fitted with a brand new interior cabin. SIA only ordered a total of 20 Dreamliners, all of which were the longer B787-9 version, seating approximately 280 passengers in a two-class configuration. Currently Scoot’s B777s seat 403 passengers, 370 in economy and 32 in ScootBiz – the carrier’s premium economy-style business class product.

Scoot’s currently flies to five cities (Sydney, Gold Coast, Bangkok, Taipei and Tianjin) from its home base at Singapore, with Tokyo commencing on 29 October, and Shenyang and Qingdao in November.

Singapore’s two low-cost carriers, Tiger Airways and Scoot, have signed a major new partnership that will see them interline on routes between Southeast Asia and Australia.

Under the initial phase of this partnership, passengers will be able to purchase a single itinerary for travel from Scoot’s Australian destinations – Sydney and the Gold Coast – to three of Tiger’s Asian destinations – Ho Chi Minh City, Phuket and Kuala Lumpur – via Singapore.

“This is an exciting development,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, “Both carriers operate highly complementary networks, with Scoot focusing on medium- to long-haul routes of five or more hours, and Tiger focusing on shorter-haul journeys. Both airlines operate side-by-side at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2, and share a common philosophy.”

“With Tiger’s move to our new den at Changi Airport Terminal 2, it’s the perfect time to leverage the strength of our networks to our customers’ benefits,” said Tiger’s Group CEO, Koay Peng Yen, “Tiger Singapore operates up to 90 flights daily. The joint itineraries and new services that we will be rolling out will greatly expand the travel options for both Tiger and Scoot customers.”

In the initial trial phase, customers will be issued a single ticket that contains all flight details for both sectors. Passengers will be entitled to 15kg check-in baggage allowance on the interline itinerary. On arrival in Singapore, passengers will have to pass through immigration and collect their bags before checking into the second leg of their flight.

In the later phase, passengers will be able to purchase flight itineraries originating from Southeast Asia, and will be able to avoid the secondary check-in an immigration procedure in Singapore.

Scoot has announced plans to expand its route network in China, with the addition of flights to Qingdao and Shenyang.

The new Singapore-based low-cost carrier, which last week commenced flights to Tianjin, will continue its growth in China’s thriving northeastern cities. The new Singapore-Shenyang-Qingdao route will operate three times a week from 27 November 2012 using Scoot’s two-class Boeing 777 aircraft.

“Qingdao and Shenyang are very exiting additions to Scoot’s fast-growing network, and it’s great to be launching two more China routes,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO.

Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, has a population of approximately 8.1 million people, while Qingdao – the Shandong province port city and home of China’s famous Tsing Tao beer – is home to an estimated 8.7m people.

Scoot, which launched earlier this year, currently offers flights to four destinations – Sydney, Gold Coast, Bangkok and Tianjin. Flights to Taipei and Tokyo are also due to commence later this year.

Singapore’s new low-cost carrier, Scoot, will launch flights to Tianjin tomorrow (Thursday 23 August 2102).

The northern Chinese city will initially be served three times a week, rising to four from 9 September. And according to Scoot’s CEO Campbell Wilson, Tianjin marks the start of a Chinese expansion strategy for the airline, with other mainland destinations expected to be announced “very soon”.

Scoot’s flights will depart Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 at 0130 and arrive into Tianjin’s Binhai International Airport at 0730. The return flight departs Tianjin at 0915 and arrives back into Singapore at 1505. All flights will be operated using Scoot’s two-class Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

Scoot now flies to four destinations – Sydney, Gold Coast, Bangkok and Tianjin – with flights to Tokyo and Taipei due to commence later this year.

Asia Pacific’s aviation industry is expanding, with low-cost carriers leading the way.

A forthcoming report from travel industry research authority PhoCusWright found that the region’s airline market is the fastest growing in the world, and low-cost carriers will grow nearly three times faster than traditional airlines across Asia Pacific in 2012.

According to PhoCusWright’s ‘Asia Pacific Online Travel Overview Fifth Edition – Airlines: A Turbulent Ascent’ report, gross bookings saw double-digit growth across all Asia Pacific markets, except Japan, in 2011. But the standout performance came from the region’s LCCs, whose passenger revenues jumped 42% in 2010 and another 27% in 2011. In 2012, PhoCusWright projects LCCs will grow 23%, compared to 8% for traditional airlines.

“While traditional airlines still account for the vast majority of passenger revenue in the region, LCC outperformance over the past several years underscores the impact newer, more nimble carriers are having in the region, especially in the faster growing markets of India and Southeast Asia,” said Douglas Quinby, PhoCusWright’s Senior Director of Research. “LCCs are weathering industry challenges better than their full-service counterparts, and their continued growth and expansion – abetted by the faster growing Asia Pacific economies – are yielding profit margins ahead of network carriers on average.”

By 2013, LCC online gross bookings will reach US$13.3 billion, up 55% over 2011. While AirAsia and Lion Air in Indonesia, Spring Airlines in China, and IndiGo and SpiceJet in India have led the low-cost charge, some network carriers – including Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, China Eastern and Qantas Airways – have made big bets to capitalise on the market changes. These have included the recent launch of Peach, Jetstar Japan and Scoot and the forthcoming launch of AirAsia Japan and Jetstar Hong Kong.

The full PhoCusWright report will be released on 24 July.

Scoot has brought forward the launch date of its new Singapore-Taipei flights.

The Singapore-based low-cost carrier will commence services to the Taiwanese capital from 18 September 2012, rather than October as previously planned.

Flights will operate three times a week using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft, departing Singapore Changi airport’s Terminal 2 at 0105 and arriving at Taipei’s Taoyuan airport at 0540. The return service will leave Taipei at 1540, getting back into Singapore at 2010.

Tickets for Taipei, which will become the airline’s fifth destination, go on sale today (Monday 9 July).

“Like Singapore, Taipei is a bustling metropolitan city packed with many things to do. Eating, shopping, cultural activities and great access to outdoor pursuits throughout the year,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “Taipei’s cheap and exotic delicacies at the infamous night markets, hot springs and nature reserves are so much closer with Scoot’s incredibly affordable airfares.”

Scoot, which is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, launched last month with flights to Sydney and the Gold Coast. Then on 5 July it added flights to Bangkok, and a new route to Tianjin will take-off in August. Following the launch of Taipei services, flights to Tokyo are expected to get underway by the end of the year.

“While our focus remains on medium- to long-haul destinations, Bangkok fills a window when our aircraft would otherwise be on the ground, allowing us to spread overheads across a broader base and keep airfares down across all destinations in our network,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson.

“Of course, Bangkok is a fantastic destination in its own right, and our service provides some great connections with other routes, so we’re all very excited to be adding it to our network,” he added.

The Bangkok flights follow the launch of Scoot services to Sydney and the Gold Coast last month. Flights to Tianjin will get underway in August, while the airline is also planning to commence services to Tokyo and Taipei.

Following its inaugural flight to Sydney a week ago, the new SIA-backed carrier will launch its second route this evening, with flights departing Singapore’s Changi airport at 2345, and arriving in the Gold Coast at 0910 tomorrow morning.

Following tonight’s inaugural service, flights will operate from Singapore five times a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays), departing at 2225. The return service will leave the Gold Coast at 0900 the following day. All flights will be operated using a 402-seat, two-class Boeing 777 aircraft.

“Scoot is excited to launch the first and only direct service between Singapore and the Gold Coast,” said the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson. “With such great value airfares and convenience of travel, holidaying in these two destinations will never be the same again.”

Scoot’s expansion will continue next month with the launch of daily flights to Bangkok on 5 July. A four-weekly service to Tianjin will then start on 23 August. Last week Wilson revealed that his airline would also commence services to Tokyo and Taipei later this year.

Scoot, Singapore’s new low-cost carrier, has announced plans to fly to Tokyo and Taipei.

The announcement was made by the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, shortly after Scoot’s inaugural flight touched down in Sydney on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to Travel Daily this morning, Wilson said; “Tokyo and Taipei are incredible popular destinations, and we’re excited to be adding them to our network. Taipei’s food and attractions are well-known, whilst Tokyo is a perfect fit with Scoot – it has a serious side but also a touch of quirkiness and uniqueness you’ll find nowhere else. As a former resident of Tokyo, who misses the place very much, I’m especially looking forward to our first flights in October.”

The next phase of Scoot’s expansion gets underway on 12 June, when it commences daily flights to the Golf Coast. Daily services to Bangkok will follow in July and Tianjin in August. Scoot operates a fleet of 402-seat, two-class Boeing 777-200s.

Scoot, Singapore Airlines’ new long-haul low-cost carrier, will take to the skies for the first time tonight.

The airline’s first Boeing 777-200 aircraft, which has been named ‘Goin Scootin’ will depart Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 at 2325 on Monday 4 June, and arrive at Sydney International Airport at 0920 the following day. The flight is expected to carry approximately 400 passengers.

“Tonight marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s aviation history. A new airline, offering fantastic value airfares, empowerment to choose only the extras you want and an expanding range of destinations, will take to the skies,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “It’s been a great journey bringing this from spreadsheet to fully-functioning airline in just 12 months, and so many, many people have contributed. All of us in the Scoot team are passionate about what this airline stands for and we’re here to change the way people travel long distance.”

Following the launch of Scoot’s daily Sydney services, the airline will add daily flights to the Gold Coast on 12 June. These will be followed by daily services to Bangkok, which start on 5 July, and four weekly flights to Tianjin in late August.

Speaking to Travel Daily last month, Wilson revealed that Scoot will add one or two more B777 aircraft each year to 2015. All aircraft will come equipped with 402 seats in two classes – 370 in economy class and 32 in ScootBiz, which will be similar to a premium economy product. While the aircraft will not have seatback monitors, Scoot will offer iPads to passengers.

Legroom is more important to passengers than in-flight entertainment or food
Legroom is more important to passengers than in-flight entertainment or food

Nearly three-quarters of British travellers would be prepared to fly long-haul on a budget airline, a new poll has revealed.

A survey conducted by travel search site Skyscanner found that 74% of respondents would be willing to sacrifice full-service comforts in order to save money on air fares on flights in excess of four hours.

Almost half (48%) of the 1,800 people surveyed said they would endure limited legroom for anything up to nine hours, while 30% would be willing to travel low-cost on a 10-hour flight – equivalent of a flight from Singapore to London.

The study also questioned travellers on the ‘extras’ they would most need in order to persuade them to fly long-haul low-cost. The majority (35%) said they would prioritise legroom over in-flight entertainment (14%) or food and refreshments (9%) for a long-haul journey. Eighteen percent wanted free baggage.

“The results of this survey show there is a definite demand for low-cost airlines to operate long haul routes – it appears people are more than happy to surrender some level of comfort in order to satisfy their taste for travel, as long as the price is right. In recent years, low cost airlines have started to introduce more mid haul routes, so it is not unfeasible that long haul routes could be next to be added,” said Sam Baldwin, travel editor at Skyscanner.

The record of long-haul carriers is patchy however; Malaysia’s AirAsia X recently cancelled its London and Paris services due to high costs, while Singapore Airlines’ low-cost start-up Scoot, has said it has no plans to launch European flights in the immediate future.

Singapore Airlines’ new low-cost carrier Scoot has revealed its in-flight entertainment and F&B options.

As previously revealed by Travel Daily last week, Scoot will offer passengers the use of iPads preloaded with a selection of films, television, music and games. This will be augmented later in the year by an onboard wireless system that will allow guests to access streamed content from an onboard library via their own personal devices.

iPads will be available for rent in economy class, but will be included in the fare in Scoot’s front cabin, ScootBiz.

“Scoot is all about empowerment. Our unashamed focus on being low-cost empowers more people to travel, and travel farther, than ever before. Our service philosophy is underpinned by the belief that guests shouldn’t subsidise the choices of others, and empowers them to select only the frills they really value,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO.

In terms of F&B, Scoot will offer a range of hot dishes including briyani rice, soya sauce chicken rice and beef lasagne. All meals will be suitable for Muslim passengers and vegetarian options will also be available. Guests will be allowed to add a drink and dessert to form a ‘ComboMeal’ which will cost less than buying the three items separately. Sandwiches, cup noodles and other snacks will also available for sale on board, as will Ben & Jerry’s ice cream

Scoot will launch flights between Sydney and Singapore from 4 June 2012, with services to the Gold Coast following a week later on 12 June. Flights to Bangkok and Tianjin will also be launched in the coming months.

All flights will be operated using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft with 402 seats – 370 in economy class and 32 in ScootBiz.

ANA’s international traffic surges

All Nippon Airways (ANA) managed to achieve double-digit growth in terms of international passenger traffic in the full-tear 2011-12, despite the upheaval caused by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The airline carried 5.88 million passengers on international routes in the 12 months to 31 March 2012 – 22.2% up year-on-year. The airline also added 14.6% more available seats compared to the previous 12 months, and average cabin load factors stood at 74.4%.

ANA’s domestic traffic however, remained subdued. Last year’s natural disasters had a major impact on Japanese domestic travel, and ANA’s passenger traffic on routes within Japan fell 4.1% year-on-year to 36.68 million. Domestic load factors struggled, averaging just 60.8%.

Scoot asks public to name first aircraft

Scoot, the new Singapore-based low-cost airline, is asking the public to think up names for its first two aircraft.

The airline will introduce two Boeing 777-200s to its fleet next month, and Scoot is now offering a pair of tickets to the people who come up with the names to adorn the aircraft.

“It’s important to Team Scoot that the community has an opportunity to have a hand in the airline’s creation. And what better – and rarer – opportunity than to name an aircraft that will… be seen by people around the world?” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO.

The B777s will operate for the first time to Sydney from 4 June, the Gold Coast from 12 June, and Bangkok from 5 July.

Peach HK flights go on sale

Peach Aviation’s new international route to Hong Kong goes on sale today. The new Japanese low-cost carrier will commence flights between Osaka’s Kansai International Airport and Hong Kong on 1 July. The route, which will be operated daily, becomes Peach’s second international route following Osaka-Seoul. A third, Osaka-Taipei, will follow in September.

Lufthansa’s Asian traffic climbs

The Lufthansa Group saw a 3.7% rise in passenger traffic on routes to and from Asia Pacific in April 2012. The group, which comprises Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and SWISS, carried 483,000 passengers to and from Asia Pacific last month, while cabin load factors climbed 3.3 percentage points to 79.1%.

Globally, Lufthansa carried 8.7 million passengers in April, up 3.8% year-on-year, with load factors of 78.5%.

American’s Pacific traffic surges

American Airlines saw a major 18.9% rise in passenger traffic on its trans-Pacific routes in April 2012. The result made Asia Pacific easily the airline’s fastest-growing region, following a marginal 1.1% rise in traffic on Latin American routes. The airline’s domestic and trans-Atlantic demand dropped 2.2% and 2.7% respectively.

The Pacific region’s traffic growth far outstripped the 6.1% increase in available seat capacity, allowing average cabin load factors to jump 8.5 percentage points to 79.2%.

The strong result for American follows trans-Pacific growth for other US airlines in April, including United-Continental and Delta.

Skyscanner launches in Talagog

Travel search site Skyscanner has launched a new Talagog language service for users in the Philippines. The new offering will display users’ search results in Talagog, making it one of the few sites in the country which is available in both English and the native Filipino language. Skyscanner said the development followed a 310% jump in Philippine site traffic since September 2011. Tagalog now joins 29 other languages available on Skyscanner including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Bahasa Indonesian and Bahasa Malay.

Air France’s Asian load factors exceed 85%

Air France-KLM has reported high average cabin load factors in routes to and from the Asia Pacific region. Last month, the airlines’ Asian flights were on average 85.3% full – up from 81.4% in the same month last year. While Air France-KLM added 2.6% more seats on its Asian routes last month, compared to April 2011, passenger demand grew strongly, rising 7.5% year-on-year.

Last month, Air France inaugurated its new route to the Chinese city of Wuhan and deployed its Airbus A380 to Singapore for the first time.

Finnair’s Asian traffic rises

Finnair has reported double-digit growth in its passenger traffic on Asian routes in April 2012. The airline carried 118,300 passengers on routes to and from Asia last month – 10.7% more than the same month last year. Available seat capacity increased 5.2%, allowing average cabin load factors to climb 5.6 percentage points to 75.4%.

Globally Finnair carried 720,300 passengers in April, up 10.0% year-on-year, with load factors averaging 66.0%.

AirAsia X achieves record load factor

Speaking to Travel Daily today, Campbell Wilson confirmed that Scoot will launch services to Sydney on 4 June, followed by the Gold Coast a week later on 12 June. Bangkok flights will start on 5 July, with Tianjin services commencing in late August. Both Sydney and Bangkok are already served by SIA, but Wilson rejected the suggestion that Scoot’s services could have a negative effect on its parent company.

“We want to create new demand for travel and bring incremental revenue to the group,” Wilson told Travel Daily. “Low-cost carriers have been proven to stimulate new demand. A few years ago all the traffic coming through [Singapore’s] Changi airport was on full-service carriers. Today about 26% of that traffic is on LCCs, but the demand for full-service carriers is still rising.”

Wilson added that Scoot would complete the SIA group’s portfolio of airlines, filling a gap in the market.

“We have Singapore Airlines as a long-haul full-service carrier, SilkAir as the short-haul full-service airline, and our affiliate Tiger Airways is a short-haul low-cost airline. Scoot fills in the remaining space in the quadrangle as the group’s long-haul, low-cost carrier,” Wilson said.

Commenting on the airline’s expansion plans, Wilson revealed that Scoot plans to announce “two to four” new destinations in the coming months, at least one of which will be in China. When asked about the possibility of launching flights further afield, Wilson said that Europe is “on our radar”, although he added that the price of fuel meant that it was “not a very attractive proposition” at present. Flights to India are also a possibility, Wilson said, but the airline is in “no rush” to make a decision.

Scoot will launch with a fleet of two Boeing 777-200 aircraft, both of which are currently being fitted out with the airline’s products. The twin-aisle aircraft will be configured with 402 seats – 370 in economy class and 32 in business class, although Wilson said ‘ScootBiz’, as the front cabin is branded, would be more like a premium economy product. While no seatback screens will be available in either cabin, the airline is planning to offer other in-flight entertainment options, possible in the form of tablet devices, which will be available at a charge for economy passengers and free for those in ScootBiz.

Two more B777s will arrive by October, and one or two new aircraft will be introduced every year until 2015.
