City Developments Limited (CDL), through its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, CDL Hotels  (Korea) Limited, has acquired the Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II in Seoul from Shinhan Nine Tree Real Estate Investment Trust for KRW 140 billion (approximately S$143.9 million1) or  KRW 343 million (approximately S$353,0001) per key.

Opened in 2017, the freehold 17-storey upscale hotel comprises 408 rooms and enjoys a prime  location in the Myeongdong-Euljiro commercial district, within walking distance to famous shopping  areas including the Myeongdong Walking Street, Lotte and Shinsegae department stores, as well  as restaurants, street food, business and entertainment venues. It is also conveniently located  within a 4-minute walk to the Euljiro 3-ga subway station.

The hotel is well placed to benefit from the positive market recovery momentum amidst robust  demand from international visitors. Meanwhile, the city’s hotel room supply pipeline continues to  be moderated by a wave of existing hotels being converted to residential or commercial buildings.

Tourism, a key pillar of Korea’s economy, is well supported by excellent infrastructure. The Incheon  International Airport is currently undergoing its Phase 4 expansion, which will boost passenger  capacity by 38% to 106 million by next year, making it the third largest international airport in the  world.

Kwek Leng Beng, CDL Executive Chairman, said, “Our Group has over two decades of  investment experience in South Korea, having entered the hospitality market with the acquisition  of Millennium Hilton Seoul in 1999. Since divesting the property and its adjoining land site in  February 2022, we have been actively seeking new opportunities to reinvest in Korea. This

acquisition demonstrates our commitment to investing in Korea – one of Asia’s most dynamic  economies with strong market fundamentals. We remain focussed on expanding and optimising our hospitality portfolio while strategically acquiring top-quality hospitality assets in key gateway  cities to further enhance our recurring income streams.”

The acquisition of Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II marks the Group’s second hotel  acquisition in 2023, following its proposed acquisition of the landmark 5-star Sofitel Brisbane  Central, announced in March 2023. These investments are aligned with the Group’s strategy to actively drive growth in its global real estate portfolio through continued expansion and  diversification.

Seoul Lantern Festival 2022

Gwanghwamun Square – Is the landmark in Seoul where a feast of light will be held through three festivals simultaneously. Gwanghwamun Square is a must-visit place for travellers in Seoul. It is a landmark of Seoul where you can see the past and present features of Seoul at a glance. This year, three festivals will be hold simultaneously at Gwanghwamun Square from 19th to 31st in December.

Gwanghwamun Square has been newly remodeled last August as restoring ‘Woldae’ in front of Gwanghwamun that is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung, the palace of the Joseon Dynasty. ‘Woldae’ is the wide stylobate installed in front of the main buildings of the palace. Its appellation is derived from a platform good to see the moon. The different charms of day time and night time at Gwanghwamun Square also bring tourists here continuously.

“Seoul Lantern Festival” launched in 2009 and celebrates its 14th anniversary this year is the remarkable cultural tourism lantern festival in Seoul. It was held in Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon with a new theme every year, and it will take place at Gwanghwamun Square this year for the first time.

The exhibits will be lightened up from 6:00pm to 10:00pm every evening, and you can see the colorful light artworks symbolizing the past, present and future of Seoul. In addition, a 12-meter-tall grand lantern of rabbit and lucky bag will be displayed to welcome the new year of 2023 which is the year of the rabbit. It is expected to attract the attention of visitors who are looking forward to hope and happiness in the new year.

“Seoul Light Gwanghwa”is a lighting performance, a combination of a media façade show that the outer walls of buildings around Gwanghwamun Square. A signature show using lights and lasers will start for 10 minutes from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and about 5 minutes video for each site will be followed and repeated for the next 50 minutes.

A giant Christmas tree and big sized snowball photo zone will be set up, and an on-site photo printing service will be provided to print out the photos taken in the landmark of Seoul.

Deoksugung Stonewall Path – A nightscape completely full of Korean mood
The night view of all palaces is beautiful, but Deoksugung in particular has a walkway along the stonewall of the palace, and now it is a famous filming set of many Korean dramas and movies. At night, Deoksugung is open until 9:00PM and admission is allowed from 8:00PM.

The night view of Deoksugung provides a fantastic experience as like you went back to the past momentarily in downtown Seoul.

Myeongdong Cathedral and its surroundings – The best place to enjoy Christmas atmosphere
Myeongdong Cathedral is one of the best night views that many Koreans also visit during the Christmas season. At the lower part of the hill where the cathedral is located, there is a beautiful LED rose garden good to visit in winter.

There are also two big department stores in Myeongdong area. They present a new media façade artwork every year and it is so famous that everyone wait until sunset in front of the building to watch the show. The department stores also decorate the exterior walls and surroundings of the buildings with Christmas ornaments, and set-up photo-zone with Christmas tree and lanterns. The Christmas lighting decoration that two department stores are competing for since they are located on the same street but it gives visitors the joy and happiness of the season, so it is recommended to visit if you are in Myeongdong.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) will boost frequencies to destinations across East Asia and South East Asia, resume flights to Busan, and increase Airbus A380 services to Australia during the Northern Summer operating season (26 March to 29 October 2023), supporting the strong  projected demand to these destinations. As a result, SIA’s flight frequencies will reach or exceed pre-pandemic levels in multiple destinations across East Asia and South East Asia by March 2024. These include Bangkok in  Thailand; Busan and Seoul in South Korea; Fukuoka, Nagoya, and Osaka in Japan; Ho Chi  Minh City in Vietnam; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; Siem Reap in Cambodia; and Taipei in  Taiwan, China.

In addition, in Australia, Melbourne will get a new daily A380 service and Sydney will get a  second daily A380 service. Details on the destinations in SIA’s network that will have their pre-pandemic flight  frequencies restored can be found in Annexe A. Details on the flight schedules can be found  in Annexe B.

JoAnn Tan, Senior Vice President Marketing Planning, Singapore Airlines, said: “Looking  ahead to 2023, we see stronger demand for flights to destinations across South East Asia,  parts of East Asia, and Australia. As we restore our network to these regions closer to pre pandemic levels, our customers have even more flight options as they make their holiday plans.”

East Asia
SIA will reinstate flight to Busan from 2 June 2023, with SQ616 (Singapore to Busan) and  SQ615 (Busan to Singapore) operating four weekly services on the Boeing 737-8. SIA will add  a fourth daily service between Singapore and Seoul, SQ612 and SQ611, from 1 June 2023 with the Boeing 787-10. From 1 May 2023, SIA will increase the flight frequencies of SQ618 (Singapore to Osaka) and SQ619 (Osaka to Singapore) from four-times weekly to a daily service. This will bring services to Osaka to 14-times weekly.

From 26 March 2023, the Airline will operate SQ892 and SQ893, a daily service between Singapore and Hong Kong SAR, using the A380 aircraft. SIA will also reinstate SQ896 and SQ897, a daily service between Singapore and Hong Kong SAR, with the Airbus A350-900  medium-haul aircraft, from 1 October 2023. This will see SIA operating four daily flights to Hong Kong SAR.

SIA will step up the flight frequencies of SQ876 (Singapore to Taipei) and SQ877 (Taipei to Singapore) from four-times weekly to a daily service from 26 March 2023. SQ878 and SQ879 between the two cities will also increase from three-times weekly to a daily service from 31  May 2023. This will bring the weekly services to Taipei up to 14-times weekly.

South East Asia
The Airline will add a fifth daily service, SQ706 and SQ705, between Singapore and Bangkok,  operated by the A350-900 medium-haul aircraft, from 1 October 2023. From 26 March 2023,  SIA will also add a fourth daily service, SQ726 and SQ725, between Singapore and Phuket,  operated by the Boeing 737-800NG.

South West Pacific
The A380 will return to Melbourne after almost four years on 16 May 2023, while Sydney  will receive a second daily A380 from 17 May 2023. The A380 will replace the 777-300ER on SQ237 from Singapore to Melbourne, and the return service SQ228. SIA will also operate the  A380 on SQ221 from Singapore to Sydney and the return flight SQ232, instead of the A350- 900 medium-haul.

The Americas and Europe
As part of its review of travel demand and capacity needs, SIA will adjust other parts of its  network. From 15 May 2023, SIA will operate the Boeing 777-300ER on SQ26 and SQ25, the daily  Singapore-Frankfurt-New York (JFK) service, instead of the Airbus A380. SIA’s 777-300ER  aircraft offer First Class cabins, which include the full roster of the Airline’s world-class  products and amenities.

Customers will continue to enjoy two daily non-stop services to New York – flights SQ24 and  SQ23 between Singapore and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, as well as SQ22 and SQ21 between Singapore and New York’s Newark Liberty International Airport.

Flights SQ36 and SQ35 between Singapore and Los Angeles will operate thrice weekly, instead of a daily service, from 26 March 2023. Customers will continue to have the option  of two existing daily flights to Los Angeles via the non-stop service SQ38 and SQ37 between  the two cities, or flights SQ12 and SQ11, which serve the Singapore-Tokyo (Narita)-Los  Angeles route.

From 27 June 2023, the service between Singapore and Seattle, SQ28 and SQ27, will remain  as a thrice-weekly service. Flights SQ52 and SQ51 that serve the Singapore-Manchester-Houston route will operate  thrice weekly instead of four-times weekly from 28 March 2023. SIA will launch a new twice weekly service between Singapore and Manchester, SQ302 and SQ301, operated by the  A350-900 long-haul aircraft, from 2 April 2023.

SIA remains strongly committed to the North American market. Even with the above network adjustments, the Airline will operate a higher seat capacity to the United States of  America compared to its pre-pandemic levels.

Bibimbap, Gimbap, and Tteokbokki, are dishes that most vegans may not have the opportunity to enjoy when traveling, but four vegan travel providers were able to experience this and so much more on a recent familiarization trip to South Korea. The educational journey was organized by Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) from October 10th -19th, 2022

“South Korea is known for amazing food, rich culture, history, and friendly people. Recognizing that vegan food and Temple cuisine are often overlooked, KTO organized a special fam trip for selected vegan travel providers to experience first-hand all that Korea has to offer to the vegan traveller,” said Jaesok Park, executive director at the Korea Tourism Organization, New York Office.

“Very often vegan travellers are overlooked,” said Brighde from World Vegan Travel, a Canadian tour operator organizing luxury vegan group tours around the world. “Despite paying the same price as other travellers they often do not get the same high-quality food experience and pay for activities that are against their core values, especially at the high end of the market. The fact that the Korea Tourism Organization is investing in the growing vegan market is refreshing and something we have never seen before.”

Donna from Green Earth Travel has been working in vegan travel as a travel advisor for more than 35 years. “I was not expecting much from the vegan familiarization trip as too many countries in Asia do not have many vegan options. I was pleasantly surprised by how the Korea Tourism Organization is promoting vegan travel. It will be a breeze to send my clients to Korea.”

“Vegans traveling to Korea, with advance notice, will be well taken care of and they will experience top-notch and welcoming hospitality,” said Kim Giovacco from Veg Jaunts and Journeys, a US tour operator that to date organizes tours in Europe and the US.

Starting the trip at the Korea Luxury Travel Mart (KLTM) in Seoul, the participants connected with Korean luxury tourism DMCs, luxury accommodations, traditional/modern cultural facilities, and providers to discuss possible collaborations. Participants then embarked on a six-day trip throughout Korea experiencing major cities including Yeosu, Busan, Gyeongju, and of course, Seoul. The highlights of the visit included a morning at Jingwansa temple where visitors learned a little of Korean Buddhism, the temple stay experience, which is always vegan, and enjoyed an 18-dish feast comprising of about 50 fruits, vegetables, roots, and leaves, as well as a tea ceremony.

“I left this temple, after spending time with our Buddhist nun guide, filled with positivity and peace. Our 30-minute walking meditation through the beautiful grounds, situated in a national park, was very relaxing.” Another special moment was a visit to Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju displaying relics of Buddhist culture from the Silla kingdom. The beautiful UNESCO heritage temple showcased fall foliage in the background.

The vegan travel service providers enjoyed the highlights of Korea and focused on temple food which is always vegan, choosing vegan restaurants and non-vegan restaurants that catered to the group for this event. “One of my favorite restaurants in New York is Korean, called Hangawi and it was wonderful to taste Korean food at the source – the use of fresh herbs such as minty Perilla leaves or the use of Bracken ferns – both in traditional Korean and Western dishes – impressed me the most,” says the owner of vegan food tour operator Vegan Tours NY, Verena Erhart.

“I had never considered running a vegan tour to Korea. Now, I cannot wait to collaborate with new friends and partners in Korea to show vegans a stress-free vegan vacation in this incredible destination that aligns with their values,” added Brighde. “We were welcomed as very special guests wherever we went,” noted Kim of Veg Jaunts and Journeys. “I lost count of how many 10-course lunches and dinners we were served!”

Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA), the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has launched its first direct flight from the South Korean capital of Seoul to Riyadh. The landmark flight successfully utilised SAUDIA’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a two-class aircraft with 274 seats in guest class and 24 flat beds in business class. The establishment of the Seoul-Riyadh route demonstrates the air carrier’s commitment to offering a wide variety of flight options that boosts the Kingdom’s connectivity with the world.

“As the Wings of Vision 2030, the national carrier has the necessary capacity to continually broaden its route network and welcome a wide range of visitors into Saudi Arabia.” said Ahmed Alwassiah, chief operating officer of SAUDIA. “To support our strategic objectives, we ensure our airline’s 144-aircraft fleet is suited with the latest in-flight innovations and plan to modernize and expand it during the next few years.”

“With this milestone route,” he added, “SAUDIA is not only connecting the Kingdom to more of the world touristically, but also helping to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and services, allowing both countries to enhance their local businesses, logistics framework, and manufacturing infrastructure. The flight schedule between the two countries will be under constant review to ensure that flights and seating capacity successfully meet operational requirements.”

The landmark route is part of SAUDIA’s strategy to expand its network of more than 100 global destinations and improve the carrier’s competitive position internationally to further solidify the airline’s role in bringing the world to the Kingdom.

SAUDIA has invested significantly in upgrading its aircraft and currently operates one of the youngest fleets. The airline serves an extensive global route network covering around 100 destinations across four continents, including all 28 domestic airports in Saudi Arabia.

Etihad Airways has introduced its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the route to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

The new twin-aisle aircraft will now operate daily flights between Abu Dhabi and the South Korean capital, replacing the Airbus A340-600 aircraft that previously served the route.

The 787 comes equipped with 299 seats in two cabins – 28 in business class and 271 in economy. This is a slight reduction compared to the 316-seat A340 aircraft, but the new Dreamliner offers Etihad’s newest in-flight products and services. Etihad is gradually retiring its aging fleet of A340s.

“Seoul has been a very successful and popular route for Etihad Airways since it was launched in December 2010 and we are fast approaching our one millionth traveller milestone on the service,” said Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad’s executive vice president of commercial. “The addition of more 787 Dreamliners into our fleet has allowed us to upgrade the Seoul service.”

This deployment comes just weeks after Etihad started flying its 787-9 Dreamliner to Beijing.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines is increasing the frequency of its Kuala Lumpur-Seoul service. From 25 November 2017, the airline will add three more weekly flights on the route, taking the total frequency to 10  flights per week.

The recent proliferation of air routes between Spain and the Far East has continued, with the launch of Korean Air’s inaugural flight to Barcelona.

The national carrier touched down at the Catalan city for the first time on Friday evening, marking the start of a new thrice weekly non-stop service from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

Chinese traffic at Korea's international airports is declining
Chinese traffic at Korea’s international airports is declining

South Korea’s airports have seen an “alarming” drop in air traffic from mainland China, according to the Korea Airports Corporation (KAC).

Reported by the Korea Herald, passenger numbers on Chinese routes operating to and from eight international airports in South Korea, excluding Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, fell 5.4% to 4.17 million passengers in the first quarter of 2017. Incheon, the country’s main international gateway, suffered a 2.9% drop.

The decrease in Chinese passenger numbers is attributed to the implementation of a travel ban to South Korea imposed by Beijing following a dispute regarding Korea’s agreement to install the USA’s THAAD missile defence system.

The decline has been more acutely felt in tourist areas like Jeju, which traditionally welcome large numbers of Chinese visitors. The number of Chinese visitors using Jeju International Airport slumped 24.1% in Q1 2017.

“Our local airports are facing unprecedented traffic decrease with the Chinese government’s ban on travel to Korea and this poses great challenges,” KAC’s vice president, Park Soon-cheon, was quoted saying.

Overall international passenger traffic at Korea’s airports increased 6.8% in Q1 2017.

Etihad Airways has unveiled plans to fly its newest aircraft to three major cities in the Far East.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will take delivery of nine more Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in 2017, and some these will be deployed on the routes to Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul.

The long-haul jets come equipped with the airline’s new livery and its latest in-flight products, including the new “Business Studio” and 271 “Economy Smart” seats, Panasonic’s eX3 in-flight entertainment system and Wi-Fi. In total they can seat 299 passengers.

“Since introducing our first 787 into commercial service almost two years ago, we have enjoyed excellent feedback from guests on our ground-breaking cabin interiors that have set a benchmark for high service levels in the region and across the world,” said Peter Baumgartner, Etihad’s CEO. “With the additional cities joining our 787 network during 2017, we are giving more guests the opportunity to fly on our next generation aircraft.”

At present, two cities in the Far East – Tokyo and Singapore – welcome Etihad’s Dreamliners. And Shanghai will join this network on 1 March 2017 when the aircraft replaces the existing Airbus A330-200 on the daily service. This switch will result in a capacity increase of more than 30 seats per flight.

Then on 1 July 2017, the airline will upgrade its Abu Dhabi-Beijing route from the A330 to the 787-9. This service will also operate daily. And finally on 1 August 2017, South Korea will join Etihad’s Dreamliner network when the airline switches its Seoul service from an A340, although this will result in a slight decrease in capacity.

Etihad currently operates a fleet of 10 787-9s to nine destinations: Dusseldorf, Zurich, Perth, Brisbane, Tokyo, Singapore, Riyadh, Johannesburg and Washington DC. Other new Dreamliner destinations being added in 2017 include Amman, Beirut and Athens.

Eventually the Dreamliner will become the mainstay of Etihad’s long-haul fleet; 61 of the twin-aisle jets will be delivered to the airline over the next few years.

Aeromexico will expand its Asian network this year with the launch of its first ever flights to South Korea.

Commencing on 27 May 2017, the airline will operate four weekly flights between Mexico City and Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, aboard its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Seoul will become Aeromexico’s third Asian destination, following Shanghai and Tokyo. The launch is expected to drive bilateral trade between the countries; Mexico is already South Korea’s top trading partner in Latin America, and many Korean companies, including Samsung, Daewoo, Kia and LG, do business in Mexico.

Mexico is also hoping to take advantage of the Asian outbound tourism boom, of which South Korea is very much at the forefront.

“Aerial connectivity has a positive impact on tourism flows and is a fundamental axis to maintaining our competitive position in the world and to stimulate greater economic growth for the benefit of those who depend on this for their livelihoods,” said Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism.

“The Asian market is of paramount importance in our market diversification strategy. In the last four years we managed to double the transport of Asian visitors and we are sure that with this flight we will amplify these results.”

Under the new schedule, Aeromexico’s flights will depart Mexico City every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 2133 and arrive in Seoul at 0600 the next day. All outbound flights will include a short stop in the Mexican city of Monterrey. The return services will depart Incheon Airport every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 1225, arriving back in Mexico City at 1251 the same day, with no stop.

“Aeromexico is proud to add Seoul to its route network as its third destination in Asia, as it maintains its position as the only airline in Latin America offering direct flights to that continent,” said the Mexican carrier’s chief revenue officer, Anko van der Werff. “This new flight will benefit both business and leisure customers alike.”

Aeromexico’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft has a capacity of 243 passengers – 32 in business class and 211 in economy.

Korean Air has entered into a major new agreement that will see more than 150 routes in the Americas added to its route map.

The company has expanded its alliance with Delta Air Lines, a fellow founding member of SkyTeam, with an expansive new codeshare partnership covering more than 100 destinations in North and South America and 30+ cities across Asia.

Korean Air will place its ‘KE’ code on 156 of Delta’s routes from Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York JFK, including domestic and Canadian flights and services to Sao Paulo.

In return, Delta will add its ‘DL’ code to Korean Air’s flights to 32 cities from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, including Singapore and Bangkok, plus trans-Pacific flights to Seoul from Houston and San Francisco.

Finally, Korean Air will codeshare on Delta’s new flight from Atlanta to Seoul, which is due to commence on 3 June 2017. This will complement the daily service that Korean Air currently offers on the route.

“Our expanded partnership with Delta allows our customers to travel more conveniently with more options between Asia and the Americas, strengthening our position as the world’s largest trans-Pacific airline,” said Walter Cho, Korean Air’s chief operating officer. “Travellers will benefit from the combined network strength of Korean Air and Delta resulting in greater schedule flexibility and increased frequency.”

Steve Sear, Delta’s president of international & executive vice president of global sales, added that expanded partnership with Korean Air “solidifies our joint position as leading carriers in the US-Asia market”.

“Incheon International Airport is one of the premier gateways to Asia and the strength of our combined hubs and flight offerings gives customers a significantly enhanced portfolio of destinations for travel,” he commented.

Korean Air is already the world’s largest trans-Pacific carrier, connecting more cities in Asia and the Americas than any other airline. It currently operates approximately 100 weekly flights from 13 gateways in North America – Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington DC. Delta meanwhile, offers 14 weekly flights to Seoul from Detroit and Seattle.

Park Hotel Yeongdeungpo will offer 150 rooms and suites

Singapore’s Park Hotel Group has taken another step forward in its Asia Pacific expansion strategy by signing its first ever property in South Korea.

The company has sealed a deal with Korea’s K2 Group for the management of the Park Hotel Yeongdeungpo, which is scheduled to open in Seoul in early 2017. The agreement comes just four months after Park unveiled plans for its first Malaysian hotel and 12 months after it announced its entry into Australia.

“Going into South Korea has always been in the plan and this opportunity comes at a time when the country enjoys double digit year-on-year growth in inbound tourism in the first half of 2016, led by the government’s commitment and investment to boost tourism,” said Allen Law, CEO of Park Hotel Group.

Located in Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo district, close to the Hangang River, the new-build Park Hotel Yeongdeungpo will be positioned next to the Seonyudo subway station and 45 minutes’ drive from Incheon International Airport.

The hotel will feature 150 rooms and suites, a main restaurant, cafe and a rooftop restaurant and bar, plus a fitness centre and function rooms.

The Seoul-headquartered K2 Group specialises in credit card systems and this project marks its first foray into the hotel sector.

“We are looking for a partner that shares the same growth vision as us and Park Hotel Group has a track record of delivering business and operational excellence for its hotels in Asia Pacific. With Park Hotel Yeongdeungpo, Seoul added to its portfolio, we have every confidence that the hotel will offer a differentiated experience with its local knowledge matched with top quality service standards,” said Min Cho Heung, chairman of K2 Group.

Park currently operates 10 hotels across the Asia Pacific region, located in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Indonesia. As well as its new properties in Australia and Malaysia, which will open in Adelaide and Melaka in 2018 and 2109 respectively, the company is also planning to open a fifth hotel in Singapore in 2017.

Hotels in South Korea appear to have fully recovered from the downturn caused by the MERS outbreak in summer 2015.

According to the latest data from STR, South Korean hotel occupancy surged 41.6% to a healthy 76.1% in July 2016. This not only marks a sharp upturn compared to the MERS-affected figures of last year, but it also represents the highest July occupancy level in South Korea since 2013.

Year-to-date in 2016, South Korea’s occupancy is up 11.0% compared with the first seven months of 2015.
Hotel rates have dipped slightly, however. In July 2016, the average nightly rate at a hotel in South Korea was KRW166,423.59 (approx. US$149), 2.4% lower than the same month last year.

The country’s absolute ADR however, remains significantly higher than the Asia Pacific average of US$96.62 recorded in July. For the first seven months of the year, South Korea’s ADR has now fallen 4.9%.

The country’s revPAR (revenue per available room) jumped 38.1% to KRW126,633.06 in July, reflecting the rebound in occupancy.

Thai AirAsia X has announced plans to double the frequency of its Bangkok-Seoul flights for the upcoming high season.

From 30 October 2016 to 25 March 2017, the low-cost carrier will operate a second daily flight on the route, adding more than 2,500 seats each week in each direction.

The new service will depart Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport daily at 0815 and arrive at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport at 1520. The return flight then leaves the Korean capital at 1625 and arrives back in Bangkok at 2015.

These flights will complement Thai AirAsia X’s existing 0155 departures from Bangkok and 1115 return flights from Seoul, and both daily flights will be operated using a 366-seat, two-class Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

Nadda Buranasiri, CEO of Thai AirAsia X, explained that the second flight is being added “in anticipation of increased demand during the upcoming travel season, especially for Thai travellers who want to visit South Korea in the autumn and winter”.

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) welcomed the decision.

“South Korea is one of Thailand’s most popular destinations for tourism, especially due to the success of K-pop and K-dramas among the Thai youths, which has spurred more of them to visit the country on their own,” said Lee Woong, director of the KTO’s Bangkok office.

“Our organisation congratulates and thanks Thai AirAsia X for increasing its flights from Bangkok to Seoul to twice daily to accommodate the higher number of Thai travellers to South Korea expected later this year.”

In the first half of 2016, more than 248,000 Thai nationals travelled to South Korea, up 13.8% compared to the same period last year. Thai AirAsia X revealed that its load factor on the Bangkok-Seoul route averaged 91% during the period.

South Korean tourists now have the chance to fly direct to Scotland, following the launch of a new seasonal charter service.

Korean Air and its sister company, Hanjin Travel, have teamed up to launch direct flights between Seoul and Glasgow. Three services will operate in August 2016, carrying more than 1,000 South Korean tourists to Scotland’s largest city.

The inaugural flight, which was operated by Korean Air using an Airbus A330 aircraft, touched down at Glasgow Airport on 9 August, and two further services are due to arrive on 12 and 19 August.

“Securing the country’s first direct service with South Korea is a significant step both for Glasgow Airport and Scotland’s tourism industry,” said Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport.

“Hanjin Travel has been instrumental in encouraging the growth of South Korea’s outbound tourism market and this service represents an important step in further strengthening Scotland’s ties with Asia. We are looking forward to working closely with both Korean Air and Hanjin Travel to further develop their initial charter programme in the years ahead.”

Both Korean Air and Hanjin Travel form part of the Hanjin Group, South Korea’s largest conglomerate. In recent years, the two companies have expanded their European offerings with the launch of similar charter services to Oslo and Marseille. They are now considering further flights to Glasgow in 2017.

“We are very proud to introduce the wonderful city of Glasgow and indeed the whole of Scotland to our passengers. I am sure the city’s excellent shopping and wonderful architecture, alongside the world-renowned scenery of Scotland, will prove very popular with South Korean travellers,” said Oh Sang Kwon, president of Hanjin Travel.

Scotland’s tourism board also welcomed the arrival.

“We are very pleased to welcome our first visitors from Seoul on this new direct charter service, which makes it easier for the people of South Korea to enjoy a trip to Scotland and discover all that our amazing country has to offer,” said Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland. “Scotland is more connected than ever before through transport… and we look forward to welcoming more visitors from the Far East in the months and years ahead.”

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) has announced the addition of three new member properties in Asia.

The new Edison Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia, opened last month in a building that dates back to 1902. It has now been converted into a 35-room boutique hotel with a courtyard pool and library.

In South Korea, the Hotel28 Myeongdong in Seoul has also joined SLH. Having opened on 28 July, the hotel features a glass façade with 200 LED bulbs that is designed to look like a movie screen. Fittingly, Hotel28 has its own cinema, as well as a “secret garden” on the rooftop.

And finally in China, LN Hotel Five in Guangzhou offers 32 rooms on the banks of the Pearl River. Key features of this boutique hotel include in-room tablets, a Cantonese restaurant and a seventh floor rooftop bar.

SLH now has a portfolio of approximately 520 hotels in more than 80 countries.

Cebu Pacific is gearing up for an expansion of its international operations, with the placement of an order for two more long-haul aircraft and the announcement of a new service to Seoul.

The Philippine low-cost carrier has agreed to purchase two more Airbus A330-300s, taking its total fleet of twin-aisle jets to eight. This will enable it to add more flights to destinations in the Middle East and Australia and launch its first flights to the US.

And the LCC has also unveiled plans to commence direct flights between Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and Kalibo, the gateway to the resort island of Boracay. Daily scheduled flights are due to get underway on 1 October 2016.

Air Canada has completed a major phase of international growth with the launch of direct flights to South Korea.

The inaugural Toronto-Seoul service departed on Saturday 18 June 2016, marking the 10th new international route launched by the airline in the space of a month.

Since 19 May, Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge have commenced services from Toronto to London Gatwick, Glasgow, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw and Seoul, from Vancouver to Brisbane and Dublin, and from Montreal to Casablanca and Lyon.

The airline has also added 11 new routes to the US since the start of May, including Toronto-Washington DC, Vancouver-Chicago, Montreal-Denver, Montreal-Houston and Calgary-San Francisco.

Air Canada called it “the most intensive period of international expansion in its history”.

“Over the past month, through Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge we have launched 10 new non-stop, year-round or seasonal services to international destinations on four continents. This gives customers, in time for this summer, more choices of destinations and routings than ever before,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

“Air Canada is already the leading Canadian domestic airline and offers the most flights to the US of any foreign carrier, with 11 new city pairs launched since the start of May. By offering convenient connections to our expanding international network through our Toronto global hub, as well as Vancouver and Montreal, we can provide customers even greater connectivity so they can seamlessly travel the world.”

Air Canada will now serve Seoul daily using its new 298-seat, three-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Flights depart Toronto Pearson International Airport at 1335 and arrive in Seoul at 1620 the next day. The return flights then leave Incheon International Airport 1800 and arrive back in Toronto at 1750 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line.

This becomes the second new Dreamliner service Air Canada has launched to Asia Pacific in the last month, following Vancouver-Brisbane.

The non-stop flights linking Seoul’s Incheon International Airport with the Indian capital will launch in December 2016. Delhi will become Korean Air’s second destination in India, following Mumbai.

In addition, the airline said it is considering launching its first flights it Iran, having recently received permission to operate four weekly services between Seoul and Tehran.

Other international routes will be cut, however. Following the end of the Olympic Games in Rio, Korean Air will suspend its three weekly flights to Sao Paolo. The airline said this suspension is due to “low demand following the economic downturn in Brazil”.

And Korean Air will also reduce the frequency of flights between Seoul and Jakarta from 10 to seven per week from September 2016.

Commencing on 1 July 2016, the new charter service will operate direct from Seoul’s Incheon Airport to the Hungarian capital, using 262-seat Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

“We have worked extremely hard alongside the Foreign Ministry and the Hungarian National Tourism Office to secure this exciting new charter flight with Asiana Airlines,” said Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport.

“The launch of Air China’s service to Beijing last year saw the first point in Asia to be served directly from Budapest since 2012, and the confirmation of Asiana’s link to Korea reinforces the huge need of further connections to the East. I fully believe that this announcement is the first step in securing further capacity to Korea in the coming seasons.”

Once completed, the complex will include a three-tower luxury hotel complex with 1,350 rooms, more than 20,000m² of retail and F&B space, a 4,500m² Korean cosmetics and beauty complex, a 15,000-pax arena for art, sport and cultural performances, a 100,000m² Paramount Studios theme park, a 33,000m² ‘Eco Adventure Park’ featuring indoor rock climbing, zip lining, an indoor rainforest and an archaeology experience, and a 20,000m² casino with 250 tables and 1,500 slot machines.

It will also be connected to a new private jet terminal, making it the only integrated resort in the world to feature its own air strip.

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost US$1.6 billion, rising to a total investment of US$5 billion in future.

South Korea has kicked off its ‘Visit Korea Years 2016-2018’ campaign with the major sale.

The Korea Grand Sale event, which has been launched by the Korean National Tourism Organization (KNTO), will be taking place around the country this month, running until 29 February. The sale has been timed to coincide with the Lunar New Year holidays, when many Asians travel.

“We hope the Korea Grand Sale will be a leading promotion to attract 20 million foreign tourists to Korea and revitalise both Korean tourism and the domestic economy,” said Jong-Deok Kim, Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports & Tourism.

Korea’s tourism industry was negatively affected by the outbreak of MERS in the country last year.

During the Korea Grand Sale, international travellers will be offered promotions at retail outlets, hotels and attractions across the country, and on the ‘K-Travel Bus’, which offers travel to various cities outside Seoul.

A mobile Tourist Service Center will also be visiting major shopping areas in Seoul, offering information, translation services and free Wi-Fi.

Korean Air will increase the capacity of its Seoul-Bangkok route this month, with the launch of its first Airbus A380 flights to the Thai capital.

The Bangkok Post reports that the airline’s fourth daily flight between Seoul’s Incheon Airport and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport will get underway on 19 December, and will run for the winter season until 2 March 2016.

The flight will be operated using the 407-seat A380, which is the largest aircraft in Korean Air’s fleet and offers 12 seats in first class, 94 in business class and 301 in economy.

The newspaper reported Korean Air as saying that it expects to fill an average of 90% of the seats on the new service. Another South Korean carrier, Asiana Airlines, already operates A380 flights on the Seoul-Bangkok route.

The new A380 service will depart Incheon Airport daily at 1850, arriving in Bangkok at 2255. The return service then leaves at 0055 and arrives back in Seoul at 0805.

This new flight complements the existing 0900, 1715 and 2015 departures from Seoul, and the 0950, 2145 and 2245 return services from Bangkok. The three existing flights are operated using a mix of Airbus A330, Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

Air Canada will launch direct flights between Toronto and Seoul next year, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The trans-Pacific route will commence on 17 June 2016, operating daily. Flights will depart Toronto’s Pearson International Airport at 1335 and arrive at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport at 1620 the following day. The return service will then leave the Korean capital at 1500, arriving back in Toronto at 1450 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line.

“The introduction of non-stop flights between our main Toronto hub and Seoul further strengthens Air Canada’s presence in the growing Asian market,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

“This new route will provide some of the fastest travel times for customers travelling to and from South Korea and eastern Canada, the US northeast and South America via our main hub in Toronto. Together with our Vancouver-Seoul service, Air Canada will operate the most flights of any airline between Canada and South Korea with up to 14 flights per week.”

Toronto-Seoul becomes the latest Asian route to be launched using Air Canada’s new fleet of fuel-efficient Dreamliners. The airline already operates its B787s on routes from Toronto to Tokyo, and from Vancouver to Tokyo, Seoul and Brisbane. Dreamliner flights to Delhi and Dubai get underway next week, and the airline will start operating Calgary-Tokyo services in 2016.

“As we renew and grow our international fleet to include 21 Boeing 787 aircraft by 2016 of the 37 on order, we are ramping up conversion of existing routes to Dreamliner service from Toronto to Asia, Europe and South America in order to provide our customers with the comfort and benefits of the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft flying today,” Smith added.

Japanese hotel occupancy hot 87% in August

The hotel sectors in Japan and South Korea experienced vastly different fortunes in August 2015.

According to the latest monthly data from STR Global, Japan experienced rising occupancy, rates and revPAR (revenue per available room) last month, with double-digit growth in the latter two measurements. South Korean hotels however, experienced sharp declines in all three performance metrics, including double-digit declines in terms of occupancy and revPAR.

Japanese hotel occupancy hot 87% in August
Japanese hotel occupancy hot 87% in August

In Japan, the devaluation of the yen has led to an increase in international visitor arrivals. This factor, combined with only a small amount of extra room supply (+1.3%) entering the market, has caused demand for existing Japanese hotels to soar.

The country’s occupancy hit 87.0% in August 2015, up 1.3% year-on-year, while average daily rates (ADR) surged 13.3% to JPY16,455 (approx. US$137). This pushed Japanese revPAR up 14.7% to JPY14,321.

South Korea however, experienced a 14.4% slump in occupancy, to 70.1%, and a 7.5% drop in ADR, to KRW176,180 (approx. US$147). RevPAR plunged 20.8% to KRW123,508.

These poor results were caused by a sharp fall in demand for South Korean hotel rooms following the MERS outbreak. Demand for South Korean hotel rooms has now fallen 24.1% in the first eight months of 2015, according to STR Global. South Korea was declared MERS-free on 28 July.

In contrast to Japan and Korea, the combined hotel performance of Asia Pacific saw much smaller fluctuations. For August 2015, the region’s occupancy increased 1.3% to 72.7%, while ADR rose 1.0% to US$109.21. This allowed revPAR to increase 2.3% to US$79.41.

And for the first eight months of 2015, Asia Pacific’s occupancy has averaged 67.8%, up 0.5% year-on-year, while ADR dipped 0.6% to US$107.95 and revPAR remained almost flat at just over US$73.

Bangkok hotels boom despite bomb

Bangkok’s hotels experienced rising occupancy, rates and revPAR in August, despite the bombing. Occupancy jumped 10.4% to 76.3% while ADR increased 5.1% to THB3,235 (approx. US$89) and revPAR  surged 16.0% to THB2,470. The results were helped by a weak month in August 2014, which allowed performance to remain comparatively strong even after the 17 August bomb.

GTA is hosting a mega-fam trip to South Korea, in an effort to help the country’s tourism industry recover from the recent MERS outbreak.

The company has teamed up with the Visit Korea Committee and Seoul Metropolitan Government to bring 420 Asian travel professionals to the country. The attendees come from GTA’s partner agencies in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand.

“Since the MERS-free announcement on 28th July, it’s time to remind the world’s travellers of all they are missing here. Travel agents can be powerful advocates and spokespeople for a destination in a way that websites can never be, so we are delighted to be playing such a significant part in this initiative,” said Cyndi Ng, GTA’s head of strategic partnerships & market development for Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa.

“Our strong network and long-standing relationships in South Korea’s key source markets make us a preferred partner to help hotels and destinations recover and welcome the return of visitors from around the world.”

The mega-fam trip has been timed to coincide with the 2015 Seoul International Travel Mart, which takes place this week. GTA is also running a ‘Korea Grand Sale’ with Visit Korea Committee, which offers agents 50% off 11 selected hotels in the country and other benefits.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization, South Korea saw a 41% decline in visitor numbers in June, following the MERS outbreak in late May.

As part of its new long-haul strategy, the Warsaw-based national carrier will start flying to Tokyo on 13 January 2016, marking the first direct connection between Poland and Japan. The airline will then launch new services to Bangkok and Seoul in autumn 2016.

In addition, LOT will add more flights to its New York and Chicago routes for the 2015-16 winter schedules.

The new routes will be facilitated by the airline’s new fleet of fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

“Opening new long-haul destinations is essential for our development, which is why we will launch them as quickly as possible,” said Sebastian Mikosz, CEO of LOT.

“Even now, connections operated by the Dreamliner are the most profitable part of our business. LOT is the only airline that offers on a larger scale, convenient, regular flights from Poland and New Europe to New York, Chicago, Toronto and Beijing. Four current connections will be supplemented with three more, and later this year, LOT will announce two new long-haul destinations to operate in 2016.

“After opening these five new destinations next year, LOT will more than double its network of long-haul connections compared to today,” he added.

LOT became the first European airline to fly the Dreamliner and now operates a fleet of six B787-8s, with two more scheduled for delivery. The aircraft are equipped with a total of 252 seats – 18 in business class, 21 in premium economy and 213 in economy. All of the airline’s long-haul routes are operated using these aircraft.

Tickets for flights to Tokyo are already bookable, and the Bangkok and Seoul services will go on sale this autumn.

It will also be connected to a new private jet terminal, making it the only integrated resort in the world to feature its own air strip.

Bobby Soper, president of MTGA, called the deal with IIAC a “monumental agreement”.

“We look forward to extending the unique Mohegan Sun brand, focused on unparalleled hospitality and guest experience, to Korea and providing a new, global customer base at a one-of-a kind, must-visit destination. Seoul’s Incheon International Airport handled 45.7 million passengers in 2014, making it the 23rd busiest airport in the world.

Best Western has launched a new hotel brand designed to target the new generation of “millennial” travellers.

Unveiled at an event in Bangkok on Thursday, Vib (pronounced ‘Vibe’) is marketed as a “chic, hip boutique concept” that will be positioned in the upper-midscale sector.

Vib hotels will be rolled out in urban locations across the world

“We believe that the stylish design of Vib combined with the concepts business model and low cost to build will be very appealing to developers and investors throughout Asia,” said Best Western’s president & CEO David Kong.

In terms of target market, Kong said Vib would attract “millennial” travellers who are “looking for new experiences”, while typical facilities will include large social lobby areas with virtual concierges, automated check-in, room services that can be activated by smartphones, international plug sockets and free Wi-Fi.

Asia’s first Vib hotel will be launched in the Gangnam area of Seoul in 2017. As well as the brand’s standard features, the 150-room new-build hotel will feature a rooftop pool, “grab and go” restaurant and bar.

Future Vib hotels will be rolled out to urban locations across Asia, and Best Western said it is currently pursuing development opportunities in Bangkok, the Malaysian cities of Kuching and Shah Alam, and the Philippine city of Ortigas.

Responding to questions from Travel Daily, Best Western’s senior vice president of brand management, Ron Pohl, said the price point of Vib would be closer to the upscale Best Western Plus brand than the classic midscale Best Western, although hotels will also be “inexpensive to construct and cost-efficient to operate”.

2015 marks a year of significant expansion for Best Western; as well as Vib, the company is also planning to introduce its new Executive Residency concept for long-stay guests and the luxury “soft brand”, BW Collection.

Currently, Best Western operates approximately 4,000 hotels worldwide under its three brands: Best Western, Best Western Plus and Best Western Premier.

This growth will start on 30 March 2015, with the launch of a new service connecting Seoul‘s Incheon International Airport with Hefei, the capital of eastern China’s Anhui province. Flights will operate five times a week, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Then on 11 May, Korean will add two new Chinese routes: Incheon-Nanning and JejuGuiyang. Flights to Nanning, the capital of southern China’s Guangxi region, will operate four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) while the route from the Korean island of Jeju to Guiyang, the capital of China’s Guizhou province, will run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Finally in June 2015, Korean Air will launch a new route between South Korea’s fourth largest city, Daegu, and Shenyang, the capital of northeast China’s Liaoning province. Flights will run every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

Korean Air will deploy its Boeing 737-800 aircraft on all four new Chinese routes.

Alitalia is planning to launch a series of new routes to Asia as part of its restructuring plan.

The Italian national carrier has unveiled several new long-haul routes from Rome and Milan, plus increased connectivity with Etihad Airways through Abu Dhabi.

New Asian routes outlined under the turnaround plan include RomeBeijing, Rome-Seoul, MilanShanghai and additional Milan-Tokyo flights.

The airline will also launch daily services to Abu Dhabi from Venice, Milan, Bologna and Catania, as well as additional flights from Rome, all of which will allow onward connections to destinations in the Asia Pacific region.

The “new” Alitalia started operating on 1 January 2015, following Etihad’s acquisition of a 49% stake in the loss-making carrier. The turnaround plan, which also includes new branding, customer service initiatives, new aircraft and codeshare partnerships, is intended to return Alitalia to profit by 2017.

“In a market still beset by the continuing Eurozone crisis, anything other than rapid, decisive change is simply not an option. This is the right strategy, with the right management team to lead it,” said James Hogan’s Etihad’s president & CEO.

“But there should be no doubts at all: we have made a commercial investment that must deliver a commercial return. We’ve invested in the new Alitalia because we believe it can flourish again. It will only succeed if there is 100 per cent support from everyone.  The coming months and next few years will not be easy, but if everyone pulls together as one team, Alitalia can grow again,” he added.

The route expansion will be based on Alitalia developing a “three-hub strategy” in Italy, with increased long-haul services from Milan Malpensa, more connections with partner airlines at Milan Linate, and an increase in short-, medium- and long-haul traffic at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.

As well as the new Asian flights, Alitalia plans to add new routes from Rome to San Francisco, Mexico City and Santiago, plus additional flights to New York, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro.

China Southern Airlines has moved to secure it position as the largest airline operating in southern China’s Guangxi region, with the launch of more international services from the capital Nanning to Thailand and South Korea.

On 10 February 2015, China Southern will launch three weekly flights from Nanning’s Wuxu International Airport to the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. Flights will run every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Also in February 2015, China Southern will increase the frequency of its flights from Nanning to Bangkok and Seoul. The Bangkok service will be upgraded to daily flight, from current three weekly flights, while the Seoul route will be increased to three flights per week.

Guangzhou-based China Southern is currently the biggest airline at Wuxu International Airport, but the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) recently gave its permission for the launch of Beibu Gulf Airlines – a new Nanning-based carrier that will be part-owned by Tianjin Airlines, one of China Southern’s biggest rivals in the region.

The company has not had an international presence since 2002, but it is now embarking on a new Asian expansion strategy that will start with the launch of a hotel in South Korea.

The new-build hotel, located in central Seoul‘s Myeongdong area, will open in 2018 and will feature 330 rooms.

“We are truly excited about opening our hotel in Seoul, which demonstrates our firm commitment to expansion in Asia,” said Akira Segawa, Fujita Kanko’s president & CEO. “We are a Japanese tourism industry pioneer, with a proud 59-year history and the most innovative and upscale properties in Japan. Beijing Capital was Asia's busiest airport in 2012, handling 81 million passengers

Passenger traffic at airports in the Asia Pacific region continued to grow strongly in 2012, according to Airports Council International (ACI).

In its full-year report, released today (18 February 2013), ACI revealed that Asia Pacific airports handled a combined total of 1.07 billion passengers last year, 7.1% more than in 2011. The growth was driven by international passenger traffic, which increased 9.4% year-on-year to 431.8 million, while domestic passenger numbers climbed at a slower rate of 5.4%, to 637.6m.

“The positive results of 2012 confirmed the 2012 to 2031 forecast recently published by ACI that the Asia Pacific region will grow at a steady 6-7% increase in passenger traffic until 2031. The report also forecasted global passenger traffic to grow at 4.1% per annum over the next 20 years and Asia Pacific will become the largest aviation market in the world,” said Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia Pacific.

Beijing Capital International Airport was once again the busiest airport in the region in 2012, handling more than 81m passengers, with an average of 6.75m per month. Second busiest was Tokyo Haneda with 67m passengers, followed by Jakarta Soekharno-Hatta and Hong Kong International, both with around 57m passengers.

Asia Pacific’s major airports also provided some of the world’s fastest expansion, with Jakarta (+14.4%), Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (+10.6%), Singapore Changi (+10.0%) and Seoul Incheon (+11.3%) all seeing double-digit growth last year.

Despite this growth however, Asia Pacific still only provides three of the world’s 10 busiest airports. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport remains the busiest, followed by Beijing, London Heathrow, Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Haneda. Jakarta is 10th, behind Los Angeles, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Dallas-Fort Worth. Hong Kong is 12th, Bangkok 14th and Singapore 16th.

Globally, the world’s airports handled almost 4.11bn passengers last year. Asia is currently the third largest global region, handling 26.1% of total airport traffic, behind Europe (29.9%, 1.23m) and North America (29.5%, 1.21bn).

Air Canada will launch new routes and add extra capacity to several destinations in Asia next year, as part of a major expansion in the region.

In its summer 2013 schedules, announced yesterday, the national carrier will commence a new direct service between Toronto and Seoul, as well as adding seven weekly departures to Beijing and upgrading its Calgary-Tokyo Narita route.

“Air Canada is seizing the opportunities of the Pacific Century with the most far-reaching international expansion of its schedule in its 75-year history,” said Ben Smith, Air Canada’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “Our new routes embrace the world from Istanbul to Seoul and deepen our already extensive Asian service. With our Asia expansion alone, we will be flying 11 daily departures or more than 43,000 seats a week across the Pacific Ocean this summer – a commitment of up to 14 wide-body aircraft valued in excess of US$2 billion.”

Launching on 2 June 2013, the new Toronto-Seoul service will operate three times a week using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. It will complement the airline’s existing Vancouver-Seoul service, meaning that Air Canada will provide daily flights to Seoul from the two Canadian hubs.

Also commencing in June will be an additional three weekly departures between Toronto and Beijing, taking the total route frequency to 10 flights per week. The flights will also be operated with a B777-300ER aircraft. Four extra weekly flights will also be added to the Vancouver-Beijing route, for a total of 11 weekly departures, including a new late night flight. These flights will be operated with a B767-300ER aircraft.

On the Calgary-Tokyo Narita route, Air Canada will add two extra weekly flights in May next year, taking the total route frequency to daily. The flights will also be operated with a B767-300ER.

A nine-strong Abu Dhabi tourism delegation is heading for Seoul this week to take part in the country’s leading travel trade fair KOFTA as the emirate records double-digit growth in the number of Koreans now staying in its hotels and hotel apartments.

“In the first four months of this year 16% more Korean hotel guests stayed in Abu Dhabi accommodation than over the same period last year which is a trend we are eager to build on,” said Mubarak Al Nuaimi, International Promotions Manager, TCA Abu Dhabi. “With the UAE seeing expanding trade links with Korea, the potential for spreading the word of what the emirate has to offer visitors is significant and needs to be accessed.”

From January until the end of April this year some 5,509 Koreans stayed in Abu Dhabi’s hotels and hotel apartments.

“In Seoul we are also planning a presentation dinner for Korea’s top 40 outbound tour operators when, together with our stakeholders, we will be outlining all that’s new in Abu Dhabi for visitors to see and do,” added Al Nuaimi.
