An Air Arabia flight bound for Sharjah was grounded at the Coimbatore International Airport following a bird hit during the takeoff on Monday. Airport authorities and a source in Air Arabia said two kites hit the aircraft when it was on the takeoff roll at 7.17 a.m. As informed by a news report in The Hindu.

The pilot aborted the takeoff, and the flight, with 164 passengers and six crew members, was moved to an apron. The passengers were deplaned. Airport Director S. Senthil Valavan said flight engineers were attending to the aircraft to fix the damage. “They were waiting for further technical assistance from the airline,” he said.

He said the airline arranged hotel accommodation and flight cancellation options for the passengers. Of the two birds that hit the plane, one was found dead, while the other was alive. The incident was reported to the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation and others authorities concerned.

Valavan said the airport was witnessing two to three cases of bird hits a month. The administration was using bird-control measures, including the use of zone guns, to scare birds before landings and take-offs, he added.

Milano Bergamo Airport witnessed the arrival of its first direct connection to the United Arab Emirates  with the launch of Air Arabia’s flight to Sharjah. The Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC) has commenced a four-times weekly link to the metropolitan city, adding more than 47,000 yearly seats to the Italian gateway’s network in 2023.

Utilising the LCC’s fleet of A321s on the 4,638-kilometre sector, the new operation significantly becomes Milan Bergamo’s longest route, very close in length to what is consider long-haul, and a noteworthy addition to the airport’s route map.

Giacomo Cattaneo, director of commercial aviation, SACBO says: “It was a momentous day for us as we realised our goal of becoming connected to the United Arab Emirates for the first time. Not only is the link to Sharjah one of importance in the growth of our network but also in the development of our partnership with Air Arabia – an alliance which has made Milan Bergamo one of the airline’s main European airports in its network.” Cattaneo continues: “Sharjah is the third largest emirate in the UAE and its most family-friendly destination. The new route will not only offer opportunity to those wishing to travel to the cultural metropolis itself but also opens numerous connections via Sharjah to places such as India, Kenya, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – over 60 destinations in Africa, Asia and the Middle East served by Air Arabia – which is of importance to the vast and diverse population in North Italy.”

With Sharjah being just 20 minutes away from Dubai, Milan Bergamo’s latest connection adds accessibility to the world-famous city, as well as the increasingly popular resort of Ras-Al-Khaimah and its outstanding seaside offerings.

“Air Arabia’s latest enhancement to our route map allows those flying from the UAE to discover the wonderous city of Milan, as well as uncover the cities of Bergamo, Brescia and Verona, to experience the lakes and mountains and a whole other realm of places and possibilities,” adds Cattaneo.

Bolstering the strong partnership between Milan Bergamo and the Air Arabia Group, the latest destination joins established operations to Alexandria and Cairo served by Air Arabia Egypt, and Casablanca with Air Arabia Maroc.

Sharjah marked UAE Flag Day on 3 November with a flag-raising ceremony on The Flag Island, with the participation of the Sharjah National Day Celebrations. Committee, in the attendance of Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, and a number of government figures and employees.

The celebration included an air show organised by the Air Wing Department – Sharjah. The Academy of Police Sciences military band also participated in the flag-raising ceremony, playing the UAE national anthem to celebrate the occasion. On 3 November each year, the UAE flag adorns landmarks, buildings, and homes across the country.

The annual celebration is an expression of belonging and loyalty to the UAE and the principles of its founding fathers. The day celebrates a sense of unity and coexistence among citizens and residents.

Flag Day also underlines the UAE’s position as a beacon of coexistence and tolerance in the region, as people from different nationalities come together to celebrate shared values and the place they call home.

His Excellency Khalid Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah National Day Celebrations Committee, said: “Flag  Day is an occasion that is dear to the hearts of all Emiratis, during which we remember the founding leaders and celebrate our great national achievements made possible thanks to the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, as well as the rulers of the emirates. We also renew our pledge of loyalty to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

“On this national occasion, we extend our warmest congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, as well as the members of the Supreme Council, the rulers of the emirates, Crown.

Princes and deputies He added: Flag Day embodies the values ​​of national unity that brought seven emirates under one leadership. We gather around the UAE flag to sing the national anthem and express our feelings of belonging to our land and society as well as loyalty to our leadership. On this great occasion, all Emiratis show their solidarity and commitment to a bright future for their beloved homeland.”

The Sharjah National Day Celebrations Committee organized a number of programs and events to celebrate Flag Day. It is also making preparations to celebrate the 51st UAE National Day, with a program of activities across Sharjah that will last for 10 days from 24 November to 3 December 2022.

Celebrations took place at Al Majaz Amphitheatre, Sharjah National Park, Maliha Public Park, Al Hisn Island and Al Kharous in Dibba Al Hisn, Khorfakkan Amphitheater, Souq Sharq, Wadi Al Helou and various areas of Kalba, parks and residential areas in Al Bataeh, various areas of Al Madam, Al Dhaid Fort, and the Heritage Village in Al Hamriyah.

Jet Airways will expand its international connections from Kerala this month with the launch of a new service to the UAE.

Commencing on 30 October 2016, the Indian airline will operate daily direct flights between Kozhikode and Sharjah. It will compete with Air Arabia and Air India Express on the route.

Air links between southern India and the Gulf region have proliferated in recent years, due to the regions’ close proximity and the rising number of Indian workers employed in GCC countries.

Jet’s whole-time director, Gaurang Shetty, commented; “To cater to this growing demand, Jet Airways has progressively taken steps to enhance capacity on the route either by deploying more aircraft or introducing wide-body options on the sector.”

Jet already connects Kozhikode with Dammam and Doha, and flies to Sharjah from Kochi and Mangaluru.

Sharjah posted a 7% increase in hotel revenues to AED 378 million (US$103 million) during the first six months of 2016, according to the latest figures from Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA).

The authority says business from markets targeted in its strategic marketing plan increased 19% during H1 2016 compared with H1 2015.

The SCTDA announced its Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021 tourism development strategy in 2015, which aims to attract more than 10 million tourists to the emirate 2021.

A total of 878,006 visitors booked accommodation in Sharjah during the first half of 2016, compared with about one million visitors registered during the first half of 2015. Sharjah guests stayed 1.99 million hotel nights from 1 January to 30 June 2016.

China is now Sharjah’s fastest growing tourism market, according to the SCDTA, which recently stepped up its marketing efforts in the country by opening up a representative office, recruiting Chinese staff and adding a Chinese language website to Sharjah’s tourism portal.

The emirate saw a 78% increase in Chinese visitors during 2015 and in H1 2016 has seen a 73.2% hike in Chinese tourist numbers.

Overall, the largest numbers of visitors during the first six months of this year came from the GCC which accounted for nearly 220,000 hotel guests or about 25% of the total. Asia provided the second largest source of tourists, showing a 12% increase compared to H1 2015. Meanwhile, 180,768 registered Sharjah hotel guests came from Europe, accounting for about 21% of the total.

Laura Zanfirescu has been appointed executive housekeeper at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites. Zanfirescu began her career in Spain where she quickly moved through the ranks of housekeeping and into an executive housekeeper role at the Intercontinental Mar Menor Golf Resort in Murcia. She then moved to the Accor Hotel group, before re-joining InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) as an internal quality auditor and then shifted to the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa in Mallorca as an executive housekeeper. Most recently, she worked at the private office of a royal family in the Gulf as an executive housekeeper and was then promoted to assistant general manager of their hospitality operations. Zanfirescu will oversee all housekeeping operations at the Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites.

Pranav Vohra has been appointed director of sales & marketing at Hyatt Regency Dubai. In this new role he will oversee sales planning, strategic marketing, revenue and the annual budget for this 421-room property located in the heritage heart of Dubai. Vohra joins Hyatt Regency Dubai from his role of director of sales for both Grand Hyatt Dubai and Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights. He first became a part of the Hyatt Family in 2005 as guest service officer at Grand Hyatt Dubai. He moved to the sales division in 2006 where he held various positions including associate director of sales at Grand Hyatt Dubai. He later transferred to the opening team of Hyatt Place Dubai/Al Rigga and also assisted with the opening of Hyatt Place Dubai/Banyas Square. Jet Airways will expand its Gulf operations in August with the launch of new flights to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

On 7 August 2016, the Indian carrier will commence daily services connecting Hyderabad with Dammam and Mangaluru with Sharjah. Both routes will be served using a Boeing 737 aircraft.

“Jet Airways is delighted to offer these new flight options and great service to travellers to the Arabian Gulf. With economic ties between India and the Gulf region flourishing, Jet Airways recognises the need to provide more flight options to its passengers,” said Gaurang Shetty, wholetime director of Jet Airways.

On the Hyderabad-Dammam route, flights depart the Indian city at 2015 and arrive in the Saudi port at 2230. The return flight then leaves Dammam at 2330 and arrives back in Hyderabad at 0600.

The Mangaluru-Sharjah route will see flights depart the Indian coastal city at 1145 and arrive in the UAE hub at 1145. The return services then leave Sharjah at 1245 and touch down in Mangaluru at 1755.

Dammam will become the second Gulf city Jet serves from Hyderabad, after Abu Dhabi, and the new Sharjah flight will complement the airline’s existing flights from Mangaluru to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has concluded its participation in a promotional tour to the Gulf capitals, organised by the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities under the slogan, “#VisitUAE”.

The SCTDA’s participation in the tour was aimed at promoting Sharjah’s ambitious tourism plans under the Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021.

The National Council of Tourism and Antiquities organised the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) tour to promote the latest developments in the UAE tourism sector, and showcase the offerings specially designed for the GCC markets.

The tour, held from May 17 to 21, covered the cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait.

SCTDA participated in a series of workshops in the three Gulf cities during which the Authority highlighted the emirate’s efforts to strengthen its position as a leading family tourism destination.

In each city and in front of more than 150 representatives and decision maker in each city from the GCC travel, tourism and hospitality sectors, the SCTDA showcased its programmes and initiatives, including plans to organise the Sharjah International Family Tourism Conference, as well as the recently launched ‘Marhabtain’ initiative aimed at  developing human capabilities in Sharjah’s tourism sector.

HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, director general of SCTDA, said the GCC constitutes the top market for Sharjah tourism with 477,639 guests staying in Sharjah’s hotels in 2014, registering a 10% increase over the year 2013 when the emirate received 434,130 hotel guests.

HE Al Midfa added that Sharjah has a common traditional bonding with GCC countries but at the same time “maintains a distinct cultural and heritage identity that offers the GCC tourists a rich product”, including the Heart of Sharjah area and a number of museums and heritage centres.

The Authority also highlighted its innovative approach to tourism through smart services and solutions delivered via smartphone apps, virtual reality, and other platforms.

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, the body responsible for tourism sector development and to promote its attractions, recently launched Sharjah Tourism Vision 2021, which aims to attract 10 million tourists by 2021.

Air Arabia is set to be the first Middle Eastern low-cost carrier to enter the Chinese market when it touches down in Urumqi next month.

Starting 10 February 2015, the carrier will fly regular non-stop services to the largest city in Western China’s Xinjiang region.

“The Chinese aviation sector has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years and we are delighted to be the first low-cost carrier from the MENA region to play an important role in this incredible story,” said Adel A. Ali, group chief executive officer, Air Arabia.

“We have had our eye on the Chinese market for some time and are now ready to begin regular services to one of the world’s great economies. With a large population, strong economy and vibrant cultural scene, Urumqi represents an exciting first Chinese destination for us and we hope to add more routes over time.”

Ali added that it was “a major move for Air Arabia” and “an important step in strengthening connectivity between the rapidly growing economies of the Middle East and Asia”.

Air Arabia will fly three times weekly to Urumqi from its main hub in Sharjah, UAE. Flights will depart Sharjah International Airport on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 0935, arriving at Urumqi International Airport at 1815 that evening. Return flights will leave Urumqi on the same days at 1905 and arrive in Sharjah at 2045.

The route will be operated using a 166-seat, single-aisle Airbus A320 aircraft.

Urumqi, which has a large Muslim population, is already connected to the UAE with China Southern Airlines‘ service to Dubai.

HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, supreme council member and ruler of Sharjah recently welcomed a delegation from the Arab Tourism Organisation, headed by Dr Bander bin Fahd Al Fahaid, chairman of the Arab Tourism Organisation.

The delegation was part of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority and the Arab Tourism Organisation.

This MoU comes in line with directives of the Ruler of Sharjah to support the trade and tourism sector. Sheikh Sultan during the signing ceremony also exchanged views about the potential of tourism. The Ruler also highlighted objectives and activities of the organisation, and selection of Emirate of Sharjah to become the capital of Arab Tourism for year 2015.

Air Arabia opened its Sharjah City Check-in Terminal in Safeer Mall. The facility is the airline’s third check-in service outside of an airport, following the launch in Dubai and Ras Al Khaima last year.

The new facility in Safeer Mall is equipped to accept baggage from passengers, which is then sent straight to Sharjah International Airport. Passengers can check-in 24 hours before their flight, and up to four hours before departure.

Adel Ali, group chief executive officer, Air Arabia said: “Our new facility will be a great value addition for passengers based in Sharjah. This will reduce the time they need to spend at the airport.”

Checked-in passengers will receive their boarding passes, as well as claim tags for any checked-in luggage. The check-in terminal is currently operational, and will be accessible seven days a week, from 9 am to 10 pm.

Starting 29 October, the airline will fly four times a week between Nagpur and Sharjah. Flights will depart from Nagpur on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 0450 and arrive in Sharjah at 0650, while flights from Sharjah will depart on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2310 and touch Nagpur at 0410.

“This move highlights the growing importance of Nagpur as an integral market for Air Arabia’s operations. Being the first international airline to fly to Nagpur, we aim to maintain a steady expansion and offer better connectivity to our passengers to the UAE. We are delighted to give people across the country access to the extensive destination network of our carrier and the highest quality service possible,” said Adel Ali, group chief executive officer of Air Arabia.

Currently, Air Arabia flies to 13 Indian destinations – Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Kochi, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Kozhikode, Delhi, Goa and Nagpur. The low-cost carrier flies the Airbus A320 to India.

SpiceJet currently flies to Sharjah from two cities of Uttar Pradesh – Lucknow and Varanasi, while Pune becomes the airline’s third destination to be connected to Sharjah.

The hotel, scheduled to open on the Saadiyat Beach District in 2015, will comprise 366 rooms and luxury beach villas, restaurants, a spa centre and gymnasium, conference facilities that can accommodate up to 800 guests, a sand-bottom swimming pool, gardens and various leisure features.

Bin Otaiba Investment Group portfolio of hotels across the UAE include the Hilton Sharjah, Millennium Hotel Abu Dhabi, and Embassy Suites Hotel in Sharjah – is currently in the final stage of appointing a well-renowned operator.

Ali Al Hammadi, deputy managing director of TDIC, said: “We are looking forward for the completion of this new luxury resort which will be a great addition to Abu Dhabi’s hospitality sector.”

The programme included presentations and involved visits and field trips to Sharjah’s numerous landmarks, museums, art and cultural centres and tourist attractions.

HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, director general, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, said that the initiative is part of the efforts to enhance skills and expertise of those employed in the tourism sector and projects in the emirate.

Al Midfa further said that Sharjah offers facilities and services in various sectors of the travel and tourism and hospitality industry. The orientation programme also coincides with the approach of summer holiday season.

Last year, Sharjah received more than 227,554 tourists from Asia, which is 13% of the total number of its international guests.

Sharjah showcases its tourism opportunities to Kyrgyz Republic

HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) recently met up with consul general of Kyrgyz Republic, HE Kuban Omuraliev in Sharjah.

Noman lauded efforts of UAE Government for rapid development of infrastructure in the country while at the same time stressing on Sharjah’s own initiatives for development and progress.

Al Noman briefed the Kyrgyz delegation about objectives, role and responsibilities of SCTDA and on latest developments in Sharjah’s tourism sector and various upcoming projects.

He further elaborated that the Authority has been encouraging greater investments in the emirate’s tourism industry, especially hotel facilities and infrastructure, especially in view of growing number of tourists to the emirate which exceeded 1.7 million last year. Hotel occupancy touched 80% during first quarter of this year.

As part of processing entry permits to the Kingdom, visa applications for Saudi Arabia will now be processed at the new outsourced visa centers of VFS TASHEEL, a joint venture between VFS Global & TASHEEL, KSA.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to open many such Visa Service Centers in other countries as part of a signed contract to provide visa processing and biometric enrolment services. The company will open another outsource center in Abu Dhabi within in the next two months.

The Maraya Art Park is a project that acts as a platform for regional and international outdoor art projects and will consist of a number of venues located at major focal points in Sharjah, including two sections at Al Majaz Waterfront.

The first is the Sculpture Park which showcases projects from local and international artists, designers and architects, while the second is the Children’s Art Park which aims to introduce children to the world of art through sculptures, interactive games, and educational activities.

Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), said: “Art plays an immensely important role in the cultural aspect of any nation. We remain committed to supporting arts in Sharjah in every way possible and we look forward to seeing many more exhibitions and projects.” He further added that most of Shurooq’s project will include special places for Maraya Art Park.

The new Art Park will also host a series of open air events and public programmes in collaboration with local schools and universities in the UAE to explore the work of the artist and his influences.

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) released tourism statistics for Year 2012 citing continuous growth. More than 1,739,240 tourists visited the emirate in 2012 registering a 11% growth over previous year’s figure of 1,562,869. 

Tourism statistics record hotel occupancy rate at 75% while occupancy percentage stood at 72%. The overall average of hotel and hotel apartment occupancy stood at 74%. The last year also witnessed increase in overall hotel occupancy, touching 2,045,690 room nights which includes 1,215,636 hotel room nights and 830,054 hotel apartment room nights, showing an increase of 13% from previous year (2011), which had record 1,804,530 room nights, including 1,026,934 hotel room nights and 777,596 hotel apartment room nights.

HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, chairman, SCTDA, said: “The positive statistics are a testament to continuous growth and progress in the tourism sector, underscoring Sharjah’s position in the region.”

With regards to profile of visitors, Europeans and Gulf nationals ranked first in number of tourists the emirate received last year. While at 621,315 the Europeans form 36% of Sharjah’s total number of tourists, GCC tourist numbers stood at 618,487 forming another 36%. The tourists from other Arab countries stood at 220,617 representing 13%. Asian tourists at 227,554 formed another 13% chunk of Sharjah’s tourists during Year 2012.

The tourism board showcased activities and celebration of Emirati heritage and culture at the recently concluded ITB Berlin. Festivals, events and tourist attractions were talked about along with updates from the Heritage Corner featuring live performances and activities celebrating the best of UAE’s culture, cuisine, folklore, arts including henna-painting etc.

HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, director general, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, (SCTDA) said: “Sharjah offers modern and high-end hotels, well-developed tourism infrastructure that goes with an endless museums, archaeological sites, rich heritage, diverse cultural and scientific research centers and archaeological sites.”

Air Arabia announced that it has added its second destination in Sri Lanka with the launch of non-stop flights to Mattala. 

The inaugural flight will take off 18 March 2013. The route will be serviced with two weekly services between Sharjah and Mattala, to be increased to four times weekly starting 19 May 2013.

Adel Ali, group chief executive officer, Air Arabia, said: “We are delighted to now add a second route. Our new service to Mattala is in direct response to passenger demand, and while contribute to the trade and tourism ties between UAE and Sri Lanka.”

The launch of services to Mattala will complement Air Arabia’s existing nine weekly flights from Sharjah to Colombo. The airline currently offers daily flights and twice daily on Tuesdays and Fridays.

In an effort to strengthen business relations and develop reciprocal cooperation between Sharjah and Turkey, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement was signed between Shurooq and the Republic Of Turkey Prime Ministry Investment Support and Promotion Agency (ISPAT). 

Shurooq chairperson HE Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi said that trade between the UAE and Turkey has not only been highly mutually beneficial, but that future forecasts are extremely positive. The relationship, however, goes well beyond just trade and investment, citing both historical and cultural ties between the two, as well as focus on tourism and transport sectors.”

Under the terms of the MoU Sharjah and Turkey will aim to promote investment opportunities available in their respective countries with aim of encouraging bilateral investments. Shurooq and ISPAT have agreed to encourage, promote and facilitate investment and development cooperation among their respective business communities as well as to coordinate, establish, and expand a business network, which will facilitate the circulation of the various business opportunities available in both countries.

Hilton Worldwide announced the opening of Hilton Sharjah, its first in the Emirate. 

The 259-room Hilton Sharjah located at Corniche Al Buhaira and close to Dubai International Airport.

Air Arabia announced its annual performance for 2012 wherein the airline carried over 5.3 million passengers in 2012, registering a 13% increase compared to 4.7m passengers in 2011. 

The carrier’s seat load factor – or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats – stood at 82% for the full year ending 31 December 2012.

The figures were announced following a meeting of the Board of Directors of Air Arabia, who have proposed a dividend distribution of seven percent of capital, which is equivalent to 7 fils per share. This proposal is subject to ratification by the shareholders of Air Arabia at the company’s upcoming Annual General Meeting.

Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammad Al Thani, chairman of Air Arabia said: “On the back of strong passenger numbers, our fourth quarter net profit stood at AED83mn, increase of 6% compared to AED78mn in 2011. The fourth quarter turnover reached AED755mn, representing an increase of 18% compared to AED638mn for 2011.”

Sheikh Al Thani continued, “With market conditions rebounding, the airline is fully confident in its ability to unlock opportunities.”

Hertz UAE announced the opening of a new car rental outlet at Sharjah International Airport. 

The new outlet aims to capitalise on increasing international inbound traffic coming into the emirate. Sharjah International Airport recorded a 13.6% increase in passenger traffic in 2012, with 7.5 million passengers passing through the airport for the year, compared to 6.6 million in 2011. The new outlet will lure incoming passengers offering up to 40% discounts on daily and weekly rentals for the next two months.

The new branch is Hertz UAE’s 18th outlet in the UAE, and is part of the company’s ongoing expansion strategy, with at least two more branches to be added to the network this year.

Air Arabia has been witnessing a growth in passenger numbers. 

The airline reported that it carried 5,301,484 passengers in 2012, a 13% growth compared to 2011. The airline took delivery of six new aircraft in 2012 as part of an order for 44 aircraft placed in 2007.  The delivery of the 44 new aircraft will be completed by 2016, and will more than double the size of Air Arabia’s fleet.

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) announced the start of operations of City Sightseeing Sharjah tour buses. 

The bus tour service commenced with three buses as part of phase I of the project, with the number of buses to be increased in accordance with market demand.

The double- decker bus can accommodate 72 persons and will operate seven days a week all year long. Ticket prices are set at AED 85 for adults and AED 45 for children with tickets valid for 24 hours.

The buses have been specifically designed to accommodate weather conditions of the region, with a convertible rooftop that can be removed during winter months for an open top tour experience or kept in place to ensure a fully air-conditioned interior for summer tours. The tickets can also be purchased at hotels and tour bus stops.

Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, chief operating officer of Shurooq said: “This step also comes in harmony with other steps, as the Authority has already embarked on a master plan to develop the Emirate’s tourism sector, most notably the marine tourism industry, as well as other significant sectors.”

The buses will also include an audio guide in German, Russian, English and Arabic. Five more languages – Chinese, Spanish, Urdu, Hindi, and French – are to be added in the future.

A new strategy is being implemented for 2013, which focuses on development of cruise tourism in the emirate of Sharjah. 

This was recently announced by HE Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). The Authority has set out a range of various measures and programmes to be carried out in sequence with a particular focus on Khorfakkan Port as well as other Sharjah ports.

According to the new strategy, Shurooq will develop the cruise sector in Sharjah to attract large cruise ships to the emirate’s ports, collaborate with renowned cruise ship operators to include Sharjah’s ports among the preferred tourist destinations. This will be coupled with arrangement of a number of programmes and activities for cruise tourists. The authority, together with a number of specialised international agencies, is currently preparing a comprehensive study to identity the requirements and find the best methods to develop and support this industry.

Al Sarkal further added: “We are working now as part of a dedicated taskforce which we have set up to study the requirements of cruise tourism. We have already achieved several milestones in this regard and are planning to sign a series of MoUs and agreements with specialised international organisations to help achieve this goal. We expect success and strive to achieve it.”

Al Sarkal said that the cruise ship sector is increasingly attracting tourists, especially families, from all over the world, offering them a unique multi-destination experience.

Travel and tourism, transport and logistics, healthcare and environment are four key sectors which have been identified to furl economic growth for Sharjah. 

This was revealed by a recent study released by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). These sectors have also been identified to offer significant investment potential and competitive advantages.

Speaking about the future prospects, HE Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq, said: “Sharjah is capitalizing now on four key sectors to drive its economy forward. The emirates makes for an ideal business destination for investors from UAE and abroad.”

Among projects that are currently underway are the Chedi Khorfakkan Resort, Kalba Eco-tourism project, Heart of Sharjah, and Al Jazeera Park make-over, among other landmark initiatives undertaken and supervised by Shurooq in its capacity as the investment regulatory body of the Emirate. “This is apart from many other projects in the pipeline,” added Al Sarkal.

Al Qasba announced that it received 1.376.676 visitors in the first half of 2012, according to the findings issued by Al Qasba Development Authority. The visitors were mainly for leisure and recreation amounting to 379.193 coming to the restaurants and cafes in Al Qasba, while Etisalat Eye of the Emirates received 54.245 visitors.

Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer at Sharjah Investment and Development Authority ‘Shurooq’, attributed growing number of visitors to Al Qasba’s ability to meet varied recreational, cultural and artistic needs of visitors and to offer diverse programmes for families.

Al Qaseer said, “The various facilities and amenities that the authority is continuously developing in Al Qasba have significantly contributed to diversify the tourist product in the region. Al Qasba continues its steady growth toward achieving its target of attracting a higher number of visitors in 2013.”

Al Qasba features a manmade water canal that runs for 1 km through the destination, crossed by pedestrian bridges. Wooden boats are available to give the visitor a cruise along the canal and to the neighbouring Khalid and Al Khan lagoons.

The number of visitors to Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah, has passed the one million mark during the first half of 2012. Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer at Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), attributed the large number of visitors – which is made up of different nationalities and which cuts across all age groups – to the renewal of and diversification in activities and service facilities.

According to Al Qaseer, the number of visitors totaled 1,151,433 by end of June 2012, and included 348,000 visitors to restaurants and cafes and more than 800,000 visitors to other attractions such as play areas, sport facilities and picnic areas, among others.

Al Qaseer added that increasing interest in Al Majaz Waterfront can be attributed to its strategic location in Sharjah and wide array of leisure options and activities, thus contributing to the destination’s steady growth rate.

Al Qaseer further stressed saying: “With a solid strategy in place we are quite confident that we can reach another record number of visitors by end of the year. This can be achieved by organizing more diverse activities that target all members of the family.”

Effective October 18th, 2012, Jet Airways will launch a new Mumbai-Sharjah service, in addition to the resumption of its services to Kuwait and Bahrain from Kochi. Jet Airways’ new, daily return service Mumbai to Sharjah will be the sixth daily service between Mumbai and the UAE, in addition to the existing four daily services to Dubai and one daily service to Abu Dhabi.

The airline’s return services on the Kochi-Kuwait sector (9W 576/575) will operate four times a week – on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays respectively. Jet Airways’ Kochi-Bahrain return services (9W 594/593) will operate three days a week – on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays respectively.

The airline will deploy its Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the route, offering Premiere and Economy configurations.

Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) recently announced the commencement of development works in the Eastern region of the emirate of Sharjah, with the announcement of Al Hisn Island in Dibba Al Hisn in Sharjah. The announcement was made after the approval of HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

This brings the total number of announced projects in the Eastern Region to three, following the recently announced AED420 million The Chedi Khorfakkan Resort. Over AED500 million has been allocated for investment in both Kalba Eco-tourism project and Al Hisn Island in Dibba Al Hisn.

The new project in Dibba Al Hisn is a leisure and tourism project that will be a new unique destination for Dibba Al Hisn’s residents, as well as visitors and tourists from the neighbouring areas.

HE Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq said: “The new project will include a big water canal and a number of cafes and restaurants, parks, children areas, as well as a number of various other facilities.”

Sharjah is placing aggressive emphasis on its tourism industry.

In line with its growth, the Emirates East Coast is set to witness nearly 50% increase in arrivals of international luxury cruise passengers during the upcoming 2012-2013 season.

This year the Khor Fakkan Port will host more than 40 international luxury cruise liners with approximately 130,000 passengers, said HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority. “During the upcoming season, Khor Fakkan Port, which hosted 23 luxury cruise liners with more than 67,000 passengers onboard during the 2011-12 season, will receive two cruise ships a week as against just one weekly call in the last season,” he added.

Some cruise ships that have confirmed their calls at Khor Fakkan Port include Costa Atlantica (17 calls), Costa Classica (16 calls), Costa neoRomantica (4 calls), Seabourne Pride (one call) and Seabourne Odyssey (two calls.) TUI Cruises and Royal Caribbean, who are in negotiations with the Khor Fakkan Port Authority, are likely to come onboard soon

Al Shaab Village is Sharjah’s newest and most ambitious entertainment and shopping attraction, which is scheduled to open in mid-June. The undertaking is a joint venture between Al Shaab Club and Al Zajil Fair Management.

The announcement follows the finalization of Phase One of the development. Experts in the tourism sector have reached the consensus that Al Shaab Village will be milestone in the entertainment and retail attractions which the Sharjah government has nurtured. The inception of Al Shaab Village is managed by Al Zajil Fair Management and has been built with a cost of over AED150 million.

The new destination will attract a diverse clientele and therefore, the Sharjah government is promoting the destination as a family tourist attraction that integrates world-class infrastructure. All this is also geared to lure more investors. The village will offers leisure and retail amenities such as fun fairs, billiard halls and gaming centers. It also boasts a health center and exhibition hall that can accommodate over 240 participants and finally, an ice rink.

In a bid to familiarise the travel and tourism industry with efforts to promote ecotourism on the East Coast and the ambitious eco-tourism project coming up in Kalba, the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority organised a field trip for destination management companies and industry representatives alike.

SCTDA chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman said that the project was part of Sharjah’s strategy and efforts to promote the East Coast and sustainable ecotourism projects in the region. “Kalba has a great deal to offer to international tourists–from its mangroves and soft water sports like kayaking and canoeing to Emirati heritage. This needs to be adequately promoted by the tourism industry. Sustainable tourism or ecotourism has been around for nearly 20 years. Yet its potential hasn’t been fully exploited by the industry in the UAE. With this trip, we aim to raise awareness about Kalba and East Coast and increase visitor numbers to contribute to the local economy in a sustainable manner,” said the SCTDA chairman.

As part of the trip, the group visited the site and were briefed on development plan of the ambitious project. They also visited the mangroves and took kayaking session hosted by Absolute Adventures.

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah released gazelles of the endangered species known as ‘Damani’ in the Al Hafiya natural reserve in Kalba. The gazelles release marked the inauguration of the first phase of the ‘Kalba Eco-tourism Project’ undertaken by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) in collaboration with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah and the International Conservation Services.

The launch ceremony was attended by HE Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq, HE Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), and Abdullah Saif Al Yamahi, chairman of Kalba Municipal Council.

Al Sarkal said: “The implementation of the Kalba eco-tourism project comes in line with Shurooq’s social responsibility efforts and its strong belief in the preservation of environmental heritage, which will have great impact in the future.”

The project will be implemented in three phases, the first of which will see the redevelopment of natural reserves in Kalba (Hafiya and Al Qurm natural reserves) in cooperation with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) release of rare animals and birds and the establishment of a centre within the reserve for visitors, as well as the restoration of archaeological sites within the project. Work on phase 1 is also already underway.

The second phase of the project will involve the development of Kalba Creek and the construction of a commercial complex featuring shops and restaurants overlooking the creek. It will also comprise the development of a number of islands in the creek, as well as rehabilitation to revive their natural marine and bird life.

Phase three has been designated for the tourism part of the project, which will see the setting up of a number of hotels and chalets with more than 300 rooms overlooking the Gulf of Oman and built in line with eco-friendly standards.

Sharjah City Centre has announced its intent to place greater focus on tourism initiatives to support increasing numbers of visitors to the UAE. The mall has partnered with key strategic hotels in the community to offer a network of complimentary shuttle buses to and from the mall; in addition to creating multilingual mall guides in English, Arabic and soon in Russian to accommodate trends in visitors from specific regions.

The mall has already welcomed over 7,000 tourists on its shuttle bus. As an additional incentive, exclusive mall specials are being introduced to tourists staying and using the shuttle at participating hotels. Visitors will have the opportunity to shop and dine at fashion and dining brands within the mall.

“The new shuttle bus and tourism initiatives compliment our commitment towards tourism and growth within the emirate and the wider UAE,” said Abdulhamid Bukhashem, senior manager, Sharjah City Centre. “Throughout 2012, we will continue to focus our efforts on tourism initiatives and expanding our reach to this important audience.”
