AirAsia has celebrated the 10 anniversary of flying to Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport.

The low-cost carrier first started operating to the Pearl River Delta city in July 2007, with the launch of direct services from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen. The same year it launched flights to Shenzhen from Kota Kinabalu.

It now operates 35 weekly flights between Southeast Asia and Shenzhen and has flown a total of 4.3 million passengers to and from the city.

“Ten years ago we introduced the concept of low-cost airline in Shenzhen with the aim of enabling more people to fly. Now the people in the Guangdong province are well-connected to the world through our extensive flight network,” said Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia.

“We would like to thank the regulators, airport authorities and all our business partners in Shenzhen for their continuous support for the past decade. We look forward to growing the destination further, and celebrate many more milestones together.”

The airline’s Shenzhen network will continue to expand next month with the launch of direct flights to and from the Malaysian island of Langkawi on 1 August.

New Zealand is set to welcome even more Chinese visitors, following the start of a series of new flights to Auckland.

The HNA Group recently launched two new routes that saw the arrival of two airlines in New Zealand and connected Auckland to three major Chinese cities. First on 21 December, Tianjin Airlines commenced a new flight from Tianjin to Auckland via Chongqing, and then on 29 December Hainan Airlines started flying direct from Shenzhen to Auckland.

Both routes will operate three times a week using a twin-aisle Airbus A330-series aircraft.

For Tianjin Airlines, Auckland becomes only its third long-haul destination following Moscow and London. But the airline is planning to add new routes to destinations including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Paris and Melbourne in the coming years.

Hainan Airlines meanwhile, has been progressively expanding its global route map in recent years, including the launch of its first ever flights to the UK and Australia earlier in 2016.

Five Chinese carriers now fly to Auckland, with Tianjin Airlines and Hainan Airlines joining China Eastern, China Southern Airlines and Air China.

Commencing on 31 December 2016, the airline will operate three weekly flights direct between Shenzhen, in southern China’s Guangdong province, and Auckland. This will also become the first direct link between these cities.

“This non-stop service will not only grow the number of visitors from southern China, it will also give Chinese travellers further connecting flight options to Auckland from other areas in China through the extensive Hainan Airlines’ network,” said Norris Carter, Auckland Airport’s general manager of aeronautical commercial.

The launch of Hainan Airlines’ flights will come just weeks after its sister carrier, Tianjin Airlines, launches its inaugural flight to New Zealand, connecting Auckland with Chongqing and Tianjin. Both airlines are part of the HNA Group.

And a third HNA carrier, Hong Kong Airlines, is planning to start flying from Hong Kong to Auckland in November.

Xiamen Airlines’ inaugural flight to Seattle takes off on Monday 26 September 2016, marking two milestones in the development of air connectivity between China and the US.

Not only will the service mark Xiamen Airlines’ first ever flight to the US, it will also become the inaugural flight operating direct to the US from Shenzhen. And the fast-expanding Chinese airline revealed plans to continue expanding its US network in future.

“The launch of the Xiamen-Shenzhen-Seattle service is an important reflection of the results of the meeting between Chinese and American leaders in 2015. On the heels of these events, a Fuzhou-New York and a Xiamen-LA service will also be initiated, making air travel, and, by consequence, exchanges between the two countries much easier,” said Xiamen Airlines’ chairman & general manager, Che Shanglun.

Xiamen Airlines will operate three weekly flights on the new Xiamen-Shenzhen-Seattle route, using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Outbound flights will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This becomes the airline’s sixth long-haul route, following existing services from Xiamen to Amsterdam, Sydney, Melbourne and Vancouver, and from Fuzhou to Sydney.

The Chinese carrier has also signed a codeshare agreement with Alaska Airlines that enables passengers to connect from Seattle to 61 destinations across the US, Canada and Mexico.

China Southern Airlines has applied for permission to launch direct flights between Shenzhen and Melbourne.

If approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the new route could launch as early as September 2016.

The carrier plans to serve the Shenzhen-Melbourne route daily using an Airbus A330, Boeing 787 or B777 aircraft. This will mark China Southern’s second Australian route from Shenzhen, following the launch of flights to Sydney earlier this year.

And China Southern is likely to face competition on the Shenzhen-Melbourne sector; Air China is also planning to launch a daily flight on the same route in October 2016.

Currently four mainland Chinese airlines operate flights to Melbourne, with Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Sichuan Airlines connecting the Australian city with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu respectively. And three more Chinese carriers, Xiamen Airlines, Hainan Airlines and Capital Airlines, are also planning to fly to Melbourne in future.

Hyatt has opened two new hotels at Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport.

The new Hyatt Place Shenzhen Airport and Hyatt House Shenzhen Airport both opened this week, adding almost 280 rooms to the Guangdong hub. The launch of the Hyatt House also marks the brand’s entry into the Asia Pacific region.

“We are excited to announce our first Hyatt House hotel and the first dual-branded Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels in China,” said Christopher Koehler, Hyatt’s vice president & managing director for China. “The opening of these hotels reinforce our commitment to thoughtful and purposeful growth, and we hope the hotels provide new and existing guests with more options when they are travelling in China.”

Hyatt Place Shenzhen Airport offers 167 rooms and all the brand’s signature amenities, such as sofa-beds in all rooms, free Wi-Fi and breakfast, 24-hour “grab and go” F&B outlets, and a 24-hour fitness centre. The property also features five meeting rooms comprising 300m² of function space.

Hyatt House Shenzhen Airport meanwhile, offers 112 apartment-style units with separate living and sleeping areas and kitchens. Amenities include free Wi-Fi and breakfast, a 24-hour fitness room, dry cleaning services and a 24-hour laundry room. The hotel also offers a bar, grocery shop, and three meeting rooms covering 180m² of floorspace.

The two properties share an indoor heated swimming pool and both are directly connected to the new Terminal 3 at Shenzhen Airport.

In March 2014, Hyatt unveiled plans for a major expansion in China, with 16 Hyatt Place hotels and six Hyatt House properties scheduled to open in the country. China’s first Hyatt Place launched in Shenzhen in May 2014, and was later joined by a property in Luoyang, Henan province.

Hyatt Place Shenzhen Airport becomes the brand’s third Chinese location. Hyatt House Shenzhen Airport joins a global brand portfolio of 74 properties, but becomes the first Hyatt House outside of the Americas.

Several airlines are in the process of expanding their international operations at Shenzhen; China Southern recently launched a new service connecting the city with Sydney, and Air China plans to launch direct flights from Shenzhen to Melbourne and Frankfurt.

This Australian expansion will continue in June 2016 with the start of three weekly flights to Melbourne, direct from Xiamen, the airline’s base in southeast China’s Fujian province.

Then in July it plans to launch four weekly flights from Xiamen to Vancouver, marking its first ever trans-Pacific flight, and in September the carrier will start flying four times a week from Xiamen to Seattle, via Shenzhen.

And finally in January 2017, Xiamen Airlines will launch a new daily flight between Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, and New York.

Xiamen Airlines’ long-haul expansion is being enabled by its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline already operates six B787-8 Dreamliners and will start taking delivery of the larger B787-9 aircraft later this year.

The airline has significant future expansion plans, with a target of increasing its current fleet of 152 aircraft to 270 jets by the end of 2020.

Passenger traffic at airports in the Asia Pacific region increased 8.0% in 2015 – the fastest growth rate of any global region except the Middle East.

According to the latest data report from Airports Council International (ACI), Asia Pacific’s growth was considerably faster than the global average of +6.1% seen in 2015, with China (+8.0%) and India (+16.4%) driving the region. Half of the passenger traffic growth seen in Asia Pacific last year came from these two countries.

Other major contributors to the region’s strong growth were Thailand (+21.2%), South Korea (+10.7%), Hong Kong (+8.3%) and Japan (+4.0%). Indonesia was the only major Asia Pacific country to end the year with a decline in airport passenger traffic (-1.2%).

Passenger traffic at Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport jumped 40.6% in 2015
Passenger traffic at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport jumped 40.6% in 2015

In China, passenger traffic growth was led by Shanghai Pudong Airport (+16.3%), while the region’s busiest passenger hub, Beijing Capital (pictured top), increased 4.4% to almost 90m passengers. Shenzhen Airport saw year-on-year growth of 9.5%. Despite the slowdown in Chinese economy, ACI noted that most of the country’s airports reported positive results for the year.

India’s aviation boom led to several of the country’s airports posting double-digit traffic growth in 2015. Significant growth was seen at Bengaluru (+25.2%), Hyderabad (+22.0%), Mumbai (+16.1%) and Delhi (+15.7%) airports.

Among all airports in the region, Bangkok Don Mueang (+40.6%) saw the strongest growth rate, while other notably performances were seen at Osaka’s Kansai (+19.9%) and Busan (+19.6%) airports.

Strong growth at Abu Dhabi (+17.3%) and Dubai (+10.7%) airports helped the Middle East record the world’s highest traffic growth in 2015, at +11.3%. All global regions experienced year-on-year growth in terms of airport passenger traffic in 2015, except Africa which dipped 0.1%.

A new agreement has been signed that will strengthen the aviation links between Hong Kong and neighbouring Shenzhen.

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA) has penned a deal with Shenzhen Airport Management Company that aims to “synergise the development” of the two cities’ airports.

The partnership was signed by Fred Lam, chief executive officer of the AA, and Wang Yang, president of the Shenzhen Airport Management Company.

“The agreement has been signed after many rounds of meetings between the two parties. The strengthened cooperation between the two airports can enhance the optimisation of airspace resources in PRD (Pearl River Delta) region,” said Lam. He added that the two airports will also support the medium- and long-term expansion plans of each other.

The agreement outlines various areas of cooperation between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZIA). These include the establishment of a designated immigration channel at Shenzhen Bay for passengers and vehicles travelling between the two airports, and the enhancement of sea and land transport services.

The two parties will also work with airlines to develop “all-in-one” tickets that include hotel accommodation and transportation option such as flight, ferry and coach tickets.

AA said that the cooperation will provide “more options for travellers in terms of air ticket prices and flight schedules”.

At present, HKIA and SZIA operate the “Fly via Hong Kong” and “Fly via Shenzhen” services, which provide both passenger and baggage check-in services to travellers of the other airport. There are also 14 ferries and more than 80 coaches and limousines operating between the two hubs.

China’s state aviation authority has announced that it will impose restrictions on Shenzhen Airport Group following a series of major flight delays.

In a statement, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said it would suspend any application from the airport operator for extra flights and new routes until 31 December 2015.

The aviation authority said Shenzhen Airport Group’s poor handling of flight delays had caused conflicts between airport staff and passengers several times in the past year. The CAAC also openly criticised Shenzhen Airlines and China United Airlines for violent incidents that occurred during their flight delays at Shenzhen’s Baoan International Airport in May.

The move to penalise Shenzhen Airport Group marks the latest evidence of a crackdown on airport and airlines in China, in the wake of a rise number of flight delays and passenger conflicts.

Earlier this month the CAAC ordered the temporary closure of Taizhou Airport, in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, after a passenger was arrested for burning the seat on a Shenzhen Airlines flight. It also ordered safety checks on other small, medium-sized and new airports in eastern China.

China Southern Airlines will base one of its Airbus A380 aircraft at Shenzhen this year.

Commencing in the first half of 2014, the Guangzhou-based airline will use the double-decker aircraft to operate its Shenzhen-Beijing route. The A380 will be deployed on one of China Southern’s eight daily flights on the route, which is currently served using a mix of single-aisle A320s and twin-aisle A330s.

The move forms part of a major expansion of China Southern’s operations at Shenzhen’s Baoan International Airport in 2014. The airline has already unveiled plans to launch flights from the southern hub to three international destinations – Bali, Jeju and Kota Kinabalu – in the first quarter of this year, adding to its existing direct services from Shenzhen to Phuket and Danang.

And the airline said it hopes to launch long-haul international flights from Shenzhen in the near future. To cater for this, China Southern will base six A330s in Shenzhen, alongside the A380.

The deployment of the 506-seat A380 will have to wait however, until improvements in the infrastructure at Shenzhen airport have been completed. The work is due to be finished in the next six months.

China Southern currently operates five A380s on domestic and international routes, including Guangzhou-Sydney.

A cargo airline based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen has been given permission to launch passenger operations.

According to a statement on the Civil Aviation Administration of China’s (CAAC) website, Donghai Airlines has been approved to expand its scope of business to include domestic passenger services. Currently Donghai Airlines operates eight cargo aircraft on domestic and international freight routes.

It now plans to purchase three Boeing 737-800 passenger jets in February or March next year, before expanding its fleet to 15 passenger jets in 2016. The carrier will mainly operate scheduled flights from Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport.

Donghai Airlines is now recruiting cabin crew and developing IT infrastructure to cater for its passenger services, which could take to the skies as early as the first quarter of 2014.

According to the company’s website, Donghai Airlines was founded in 2002 and was the first private cargo airline partly owned by foreign investor.

It becomes the latest in a series of new passenger airlines to be launched in China since government regulations on the creation of new carriers were relaxed earlier this year. Other new entries into the market in the coming months and years will include Sutong Airlines, Ruili Airlines, Urumqi Airlines, Qingdao Airlines and Zhejiang Loong Airlines.
