SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, and Virgin Atlantic announced that the UK airline will join as SkyTeam’s newest member in early 2023. Virgin Atlantic will become SkyTeam’s first and only UK member airline, enhancing the alliance’s transatlantic network and services to and from Heathrow and Manchester Airport.

Virgin Atlantic customers will benefit from a consistent, seamless customer experience, across 1,000+ global destinations. They’ll also have more opportunities to earn and redeem points across member airlines and access to a network of 750+ airport lounges, spanning six continents.

The airline’s Flying Club members will enjoy significant benefits from the day of joining, with a global expansion of its loyalty offering. Virgin Atlantic Silver Card holders will be recognised as SkyTeam Elite Members, whilst the airline’s Gold Card members will become Elite Plus. This recognition provides a raft of benefits, including priority check in, baggage handling and boarding. Flying Club members will be able to take advantage of the benefits as soon as Virgin Atlantic officially enrols in SkyTeam, which is expected in early 2023.

Virgin Atlantic’s entry into the alliance builds upon the success of its transatlantic joint venture partnership with Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM, each already long established SkyTeam members. The four partners are co-located at London Heathrow’s Terminal Three, alongside existing SkyTeam members Aeromexico and China Eastern, providing customers with smooth airside transits and the most convenient connections times possible.

Walter Cho, SkyTeam Chairman said: “Virgin Atlantic is synonymous with innovation and excellent service, an iconic British airline with a global outlook that puts customers at the heart of its operations – like SkyTeam and its members – and we are delighted to welcome them into our alliance.”

Kristin Colvile, SkyTeam CEO, said: “As a member of SkyTeam, Virgin Atlantic will benefit from increased opportunities to expand its global network through partnerships and synergies: customers will have more ways to earn and burn miles while enjoying the service for which Virgin Atlantic is renowned. Virgin Atlantic shares SkyTeam’s values, caring for our customers, our employees, and the world in which they live, and we are excited to have them as part of the SkyTeam family.”

Shai Weiss, CEO Virgin Atlantic, commented: “At Virgin Atlantic we strive to create thoughtful experiences that feel different for our customers and SkyTeam shares that customer first ethos. 2022 marks the year Virgin Atlantic gets back to its best for our customers and people and joining SkyTeam is an important milestone. Our membership will allow us to enhance established relationships with our valued partners at Delta and Air France-KLM, as well as opening up opportunities to collaborate with new airlines. It will enable a seamless customer experience, with an expanded network and maximised loyalty benefits.”

Codeshare agreements are already in place with Aeromexico and Middle East Airlines with options for more codeshares to follow. Interline agreements with all SkyTeam members are already in place, providing one touch point for all customers, creating a seamless journey on one ticket.

SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, has welcomed ITA Airways, Italy’s new national carrier, to replace Alitalia. SkyTeam’s 700 million customers will continue to enjoy seamless connectivity to important destinations throughout Italy with the addition of ITA Airways.

Alitalia halted operations on October 14 and withdrew from the SkyTeam global airline association on the same day. SkyTeam and Alitalia Loyalty have decided to extend their relationship, allowing the six million MilleMiglia frequent flyer programme members to earn and redeem miles on selected SkyTeam flights, providing a wealth of opportunities and exclusive services.

The airline will fill the void left by Alitalia’s bankruptcy earlier this month. SkyTeam customers will continue to benefit from seamless connectivity throughout Italy as a result of the adjustment.

Joining an airline alliance can be a time-consuming and challenging process. Airlines may need to be formally invited to join the alliance, and only well-established carriers are often selected. Even after acceptance, it can take months or years for membership to become official. However, given an airline’s standing as an alliance member, the perks are frequently worth the effort.

Instead of the customary hurdles that an airline must overcome, ITA appears to have been fast-tracked into the SkyTeam alliance. The alliance announced last week that it had welcomed its newest member. ITA will replace the void created by its predecessor Alitalia, which exited the alliance on October 14 when the airline ceased operations.

SkyTeam Chairman Walter Cho stated of the new member, “For more than 20 years, the Italian market has been a cornerstone of SkyTeam’s European network, and no other airline alliance connects Italy to the world better.” We warmly welcome ITA Airways’ decision to join our alliance and ensure service continuity for the millions of customers who pick SkyTeam as their prefered alliance to Italy.”

Frequent travellers of alliance members typically have access to reciprocal advantages when flying with another member airline. SkyTeam announced that it is collaborating with ITA Airways to reach an agreement on this.

Surprisingly, SkyTeam disclosed that it is still collaborating with Alitalia’s former loyalty programme. ITA is now offering a loyalty match scheme that covers Alitalia, mileage scheme members. According to the airline alliance, members of Alitalia Loyalty will be allowed to continue using the programme when flying with other carriers.

To facilitate the safe restart of international travel and restore the value contributed by travel and tourism to the world’s economy, the three global airline alliances oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance are calling on G7 governments, at their upcoming leadership summit on 11-13 June, to agree on a common set of travel and health standards to enable the safe reopening of borders.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted the travel and tourism sector, which has long been a key contributor to many economies. A recent estimate by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) showed that international tourism declined by around 80% in 2020. Prior to the pandemic, tourism contributed more than 4% of GDP for the average OECD country, with the World Travel and Tourism Council estimating up to 174 million jobs at risk globally.

In unison, the CEOs of the three global alliances – Kristin Colvile at SkyTeam, Rob Gurney for oneworld, and Jeffrey Goh of Star Alliance – said: “International air travel and tourism are vital to the global economy. With considerable data now available to support government decisions in managing risks, decisive action from G7 members to open borders and support clear, consistent, and data-driven measures, would remove uncertainty, particularly around testing and quarantine.”

While vaccination programmes offer hope in some markets, varying – and often fast-changing – rules and procedures across countries and at different airport hubs, continue to create confusion and stress for customers and disrupt travel. To provide much-needed clarity, the alliances – which collectively represent almost two-thirds of global air capacity prior to COVID-19 – urge G7 governments to lead the world in aligning to the following travel measures to reconnect travellers with the world, safely and securely:

  • Fully vaccinated passengers should be exempt from quarantine.
  • COVID-19 testing should be easily accessible, affordable, and consistent.
  • Connecting passengers at airports should not be subject to additional testing or quarantine restrictions at the point of transfer if remaining in the transit zone.

Further, the three global airline alliances support IATA’s call for governments to adopt digital processes to manage travel health credentials including vaccine and test certificates, and for G7 member states to agree to common requirements and standards for health credentials as set out by the World Health Organization and International Civil Aviation Organization.

“Vaccination will have a key role in the restart of international air travel and tourism. We strongly advocate for governments to accept accredited vaccination as a safe and appropriate reason to avoid quarantines. In the meantime, while we wait for the global population to be substantially vaccinated, it is important to have robust and consistent testing protocols, along with interoperable digital solutions developed to facilitate the customer journey,” said the three alliance CEOs.

OneWorld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance comprise 59 member airlines, plus connecting affiliates, transporting almost 2 billion customers each year. The three alliances have worked tirelessly with their members to restore customer confidence by developing awareness of member airlines’ rigorous health and safety protocols and providing digital tools to facilitate compliance with current travel regulations. These include online databases of testing locations, where customers can secure the correct COVID-19 test in advance of travel with a trusted provider.

Vietnam Airlines has announced the arrival of its 12th Airbus A350 this week, the first aircraft in the series to feature the SkyTeam Alliance livery.

Discussing the new SkyTeam colours emblazoning the fuselage of the plane, Vietnam Airlines, executive vice president, Le Hong Ha, said: “The unified livery demonstrates the vision and mission of Vietnam Airlines to bring increased benefits to customers through international integration, bilateral and multilateral cooperation with other airlines and global alliances.

“The special paint scheme is also part of Vietnam Airlines’ ongoing effort to provide a new flying experience to passengers and accomplish its goal of becoming the largest airline in Asia-Pacific”.

Vietnam Airlines has been a member of the SkyTeam since 2010, viewing the alliance as being an essential aspect of the carrier’s future. Particularly in when it comes to passenger service, with business class fliers and Lotusmiles members both eligible for priority check-in, boarding, immigration and security check and baggage collection, as part of the SkyPriority chain, available at all SkyTeam affiliated airports.

Perry Cantarutti, SkyTeam’s chief executive officer and managing director (below)said: “As a valued member of SkyTeam for over eight years, we would like to congratulate Vietnam Airlines on the delivery of their 12th and very beautiful A350. We are of course, extra proud of this particular plane as it will fly the SkyTeam livery around the world. We look forward to seeing it on the runway and in the skies.”

The new aircraft comes as part of a deal which for Airbus supply 14 A350s to the airline by the end of 2019, which comes on top of an order for ten A350’s signed in 2016.

At the time, the long range abilities of the A350 were cited by Vietnam Airlines president & CEO Duong Tri Thanh, to be part of a strategy for transcontinental flights to the US. However, as yet, there has been no official announcement as to when these services will start.

The two-stop option is the latest addition to SkyTeam’s Go Round the World Pass, which offers travellers between two and 15 stops during round-the-world trips.

SkyTeam’s member airlines currently serve 1,062 destinations in 179 countries.

SkyTeam has created a new programme aimed at attracting more Chinese corporate customers.

The new ‘SkyTeam China Corporate Connection’ product, which the alliance says is “fully competition-law compliant”, offers corporate account packages for Chinese organisations with a minimum total air spend of CNY2 million (US$290,000) on three or more SkyTeam airlines. At least half of the total spend must be international travel, and flights must originate in Greater China.

“Offering corporate agreements in China meets the increasing demand for business travel in the region while adding value through cost savings and customer service,” said Perry Cantarutti, SkyTeam’s CEO & managing director. “This is one of many ways we are working to deliver a superior experience for Chinese customers, while facilitating travel and commerce between China and the rest of the world.”

The new agreements will provide Chinese corporates with access to a choice of SkyTeam’s global airlines in a single contract. Companies will be provided with a dedicated account team, while travellers will be offered SkyPriority services such as priority check-in, boarding and baggage collection, access to airport lounges, and frequent flyer benefits.

SkyTeam is the largest airline alliance in Greater China, with members including China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern and Xiamen Airlines, and a further 10 carriers serving the region.

SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, is on the verge of launching a major new lounge at Beijing’s Capital International Airport.

The new 800m² facility will open in the coming weeks, and SkyTeam has offered a sneak preview of the lounge ahead of the launch. Available for the premium passengers and qualifying frequent flyers of the 12 SkyTeam airlines serving Beijing, the new SkyTeam lounge will be able to seat 160 people at a time.

Facilities will include hot and cold Chinese and international food, drinks including hot beverages and a wine bar, free Wi-Fi, a business area with computers, numerous power outlets, showers with towels and toiletries, a separate TV room and a VIP room.

“More than 14 million SkyTeam passengers fly through Beijing each year and, as the largest alliance in Greater China, opening our second lounge underscores our commitment to enhancing the travel experience for our top customers in the region,” said Perry Cantarutti, SkyTeam’s CEO & managing director.

“With the new lounge, SkyTeam will offer more branded lounges across its global network than any other airline alliance. Because these lounges are popular with our customers and add value for our members, we are developing plans to expand our global lounge portfolio even further.”

The Beijing facility will become the sixth SkyTeam-branded lounge worldwide, following existing locations in Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London Heathrow and Sydney airports. It was developed in collaboration with SkyTeam members China Eastern and China Southern Airlines.

In total, the alliance now offers more than 3,700 weekly flights to and from Beijing Capital International Airport, operated by 12 member airlines: Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Delta Air Lines, Garuda Indonesia, KLM, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.

SkyTeam has introduced a new online tool that allows frequent flyers to keep their balance up-to-date.

The “retroactive credit tool”, which is already available across most of SkyTeam’s 20 member airlines, works in real-time to validate requests to award points for previous flights. Eliminating the need for manual processing, the new automated system allows passengers to log into their FFP account, enter their flight details, and have their points validated.

The main reason for points not being allocated initially is that FFP details were not added at the time of reservation.

“We are offering a fast, simple and seamless way to claim missing miles,” said Michael Schutzbank, SkyTeam’s director of customer loyalty. “Uncredited flights can make a difference when it comes to a customer’s status level or being able to claim an award ticket, but this quick and easy solution ensures our frequent flyers benefit from every mile flown.”

SkyTeam said that any airlines that do not currently have the tool available will be rolling it out in the coming weeks.

Korean Air has entered into a major new agreement that will see more than 150 routes in the Americas added to its route map.

The company has expanded its alliance with Delta Air Lines, a fellow founding member of SkyTeam, with an expansive new codeshare partnership covering more than 100 destinations in North and South America and 30+ cities across Asia.

Korean Air will place its ‘KE’ code on 156 of Delta’s routes from Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York JFK, including domestic and Canadian flights and services to Sao Paulo.

In return, Delta will add its ‘DL’ code to Korean Air’s flights to 32 cities from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, including Singapore and Bangkok, plus trans-Pacific flights to Seoul from Houston and San Francisco.

Finally, Korean Air will codeshare on Delta’s new flight from Atlanta to Seoul, which is due to commence on 3 June 2017. This will complement the daily service that Korean Air currently offers on the route.

“Our expanded partnership with Delta allows our customers to travel more conveniently with more options between Asia and the Americas, strengthening our position as the world’s largest trans-Pacific airline,” said Walter Cho, Korean Air’s chief operating officer. “Travellers will benefit from the combined network strength of Korean Air and Delta resulting in greater schedule flexibility and increased frequency.”

Steve Sear, Delta’s president of international & executive vice president of global sales, added that expanded partnership with Korean Air “solidifies our joint position as leading carriers in the US-Asia market”.

“Incheon International Airport is one of the premier gateways to Asia and the strength of our combined hubs and flight offerings gives customers a significantly enhanced portfolio of destinations for travel,” he commented.

Korean Air is already the world’s largest trans-Pacific carrier, connecting more cities in Asia and the Americas than any other airline. It currently operates approximately 100 weekly flights from 13 gateways in North America – Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington DC. Delta meanwhile, offers 14 weekly flights to Seoul from Detroit and Seattle.

Two of China’s biggest airlines have agreed to move their operations to Beijing’s new airport, when it opens in 2019.

China Eastern and China Southern Airlines, both of which are members of the SkyTeam alliance, have both committed to using the new airport in southern Beijing’s Daxing district.

Together, they will be allocated 40% of capacity at the new hub. Other SkyTeam carriers such as Delta Air Lines, Korean Air and Air France are likely to join their partners in Daxing.

Air China will continue to operate from the existing Beijing Capital International Airport, along with its Star Alliance partners.

Following the decision, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said it will not approve any new routes applications from China Eastern and China Southern out of Beijing Capital.

Two other Chinese carriers, Beijing Capital Airlines and Hebei Airlines, have already agreed to move to the new Beijing airport.

SkyTeam has launched a new app that allows premium passengers to rate their airport experience.

The new SkyPriority Audit App has now been rolled out globally, following a nine-month trial phase involving more than 8,000 of the alliance’s frequent flyers. Passengers flying with SkyTeam’s 20 member airlines can now provide feedback on the SkyPriority services offered at more than 1,000 airports.

“SkyTeam was the first alliance to deliver aligned, branded priority airport services network-wide. In order to ensure we are providing a consistently high level of service, our SkyPriority customers are now empowered to give us direct feedback when they are travelling,” said Perry Cantarutti, SkyTeam’s CEO & managing director.

“We are committed to our promise of caring more about customers and by listening to what they have to say and using the data from the customer audit, we can identify areas for improvement to deliver a more seamless travel experience.”

The app is free to download and available in English, Spanish and Simplified Chinese, with a further 11 languages scheduled to be rolled out through summer 2016.

Delta Air Lines has agreed to take a 3.55% stake in Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines.

Delta will take a 3.55% stake in Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines

The purchase of equity marks the first direct investment in a Chinese airline by a US-based carrier.

“Delta’s relationship with China Eastern is long-standing. We share a vision that will create the most profitable, enduring franchise between the US and China, with world-class customer service,” said Richard Anderson, Delta’s CEO.

“For the past three years, Delta has welcomed members of the China Eastern team at our headquarters for sharing best practices and work study opportunities. We have learned much from one another already and look forward to deepening our already effective partnership.”

China Eastern, its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines, and Delta currently operate codeshare flights on 30 domestic routes in the US, 43 domestic routes in China and seven trans-Pacific routes between the two countries.

Under the new investment, Delta will purchase approximately 10% of China Eastern’s H-shares, which trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The equals 3.55% of the airline’s total shares. As a result, Delta will be entitled to an “observer seat” on the China Eastern board of directors.

“Delta’s equity investment in China Eastern is an investment in the future success of the partnership,” Anderson said. “China is the second largest travel market from the US and is projected to grow more than twice the global average, becoming the largest market from the US in the next few years.”

China Eastern currently operates 35 weekly flights from Shanghai to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Honolulu, plus three flights a week from Nanjing to Los Angeles.

Delta meanwhile, has increased its China network by nearly three times in the past five years. This summer it will operate 28 weekly services to Shanghai this summer, plus a daily service to Beijing, from Seattle and Detroit, and to Hong Kong from Seattle.

The Qantas-Emirates partnership is an example of the new type of strategic alliance emerging in the industry

Traditional airline alliances have had their day and will not survive in the future, a new report has asserted.

In its new study, ‘The Fight for Global Markets’, aviation analysts OAG said that the next phase of the battle for global air passengers has already started, and that airlines that are focused purely on traditional alliance models could be at a significant disadvantage.

The report highlights the growth of new forms of airline cooperation, driven by carriers like Etihad Airways with its network of “equity partners”, which are now changing the industry landscape.

“Alliances are no longer the only means of international competition. Increasingly joint ventures, equity stakes and less formal partnerships are being used, all of which challenge existing structures and operations. There are currently more airlines than can realistically exist and in a truly global market where barriers were eased, we would expect to see a consolidation of carriers,” said OAG’s executive vice president of data & market intelligence, John Grant.

“The global aviation outlook is transforming and there have to be changes to the business structure, the key players and shape of the industry. Alliances are not a long-term solution – they are a fixed solution which have run their course.”

According to OAG, while airline alliances have “served a purpose”, the merits of being aligned to a few major brands will be outweighed by the need to new develop strategic partnerships. This has been highlighted in recent years by airlines like Qantas, a oneworld member which has formed partnerships with SkyTeam‘s China Eastern Airlines and unaffiliated Emirates.

OAG also highlighted the rise of low-cost carriers. The report stated that while most have the wrong fleets to develop long-haul networks, major LCCs could use joint ventures and alliances with full-service carriers to move forward.

OAG’s report concludes that China, Indonesia and Turkey could be the markets where globally dominant airlines are based in 10 years’ time.

Delta Air Lines has significantly expanded its operations in China, as part of a new partnership with its SkyTeam alliance partners in Shanghai.

The US carrier is relocating its passenger operations from Terminal 2 at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport to Terminal 1, to allow passengers to more easily connect to a new range of domestic routes offered as part of a codeshare alliance with Shanghai Airlines – a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines.

Under the new arrangement, Delta will be able to sell tickets for Shanghai Airlines’ flights connecting Pudong with Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Changchun, Guiyang, Guilin, Nanning, Tianjin, Haikou, Harbin and Wuhan.

These routes are in addition to Delta’s existing codeshare partnership with China Eastern, taking the total number of Chinese destinations offered by Delta from Shanghai to 30.

The codeshare partnerships commenced on 1 April 2015 and the terminal relocation will follow on 13 April. The move to Terminal 1 will also enable Delta passengers to access to China Eastern’s new 372m² SkyTeam Lounge, which opens in late 2015.

“By relocating our operations and growing our partnership with China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines, Delta will offer the most comprehensive intra-China network at Shanghai airport for our customers in the United States and China,” said Vinay Dube, Delta’s senior vice president for Asia Pacific.

Delta will operate 28 weekly flights to Shanghai this summer, including a new direct service from Los Angeles which is expected to commence in July. It also offers daily services to Beijing from both Seattle and Detroit.

Vietnam Airlines touched down at London’s Heathrow Airport for the first time last week.
The airline had previously flown to and from the UK capital’s Gatwick Airport, but will now operate from Heathrow’s Terminal 4, alongside its fellow SkyTeam alliance members.

“Vietnam Airlines’ move to Heathrow… is good news for Britain as it secures a direct route to an important growth economy, with more frequent flights and greater cargo capacity,” said Heathrow’s CEO, John Holland-Kaye.

“As a strategic national asset, only Heathrow can connect all of the UK’s nations and regions to global markets and make it easier for Britain’s exporters to win business and attract investment.”

Vietnam Airlines’ Heathrow flights will initially operate four times a week, with two weekly services from Hanoi and two from Ho Chi Minh City.

But this will increase to five or six flights per week following the deployment of the airline’s brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on its London routes, before increasing to a daily service for summer 2016.

Sabre has teamed up with SkyTeam to launch the first automated round-the-world (RTW) airfares.

Until now, travel agents had to manually calculate the prices of each segment of a passenger’s journey. But the new Sabre technology automates this process, providing a complete fare price to the agent for the passenger’s entire journey.

The tool is designed for itineraries that start and end in the same destination, but include more than one stop-over.

“Booking RTW tickets has been a pain point for airlines and agencies for some time, and a challenge we have been eager to help solve,” said Jeremy van de Klundert, managing director of Sabre Pacific.

“Using our latest technology and working alongside ATPCO (Airline Tariff Publishing Company) and SkyTeam, Sabre has established a new industry standard for purchasing RTW itineraries that makes it easier and more efficient for everyone involved. SkyTeam is a great first alliance to have on board and we fully expect this new standard to drive more RTW fares for carriers.”

The new solution will be immediately available for SkyTeam’s Go Round the World (RTW) and Go Round Asia & Southwest Pacific fares.

Developed in collaboration with global airline alliance, SkyTeam, and Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO), Sabre claims the new technology helps reduce administrative costs associated with updating and managing RTW products.

Previously, when booking multi-destination RTW itineraries for travellers, agents had to manually add up the prices of each segment of a passenger’s journey.

New Sabre technology automates this process, providing a complete fare price to the agent for the passenger’s entire journey. Agencies will also benefit from reduced Agency Debit Memo costs (ADMs), sent by airlines when there is a discrepancy between the fare offered and the airline’s published price. This new capability will be immediately available for SkyTeam’s Go Round the World (RTW) and Go Round Asia & Southwest Pacific fares.

Mauro Oretti, Vice President – Sales & Marketing from SkyTeam said: “Building an industry-approved, standardised framework for automated RTW fares has been much needed for some time, and that is why we are delighted to be working with Sabre to make this a reality. We are proud to be the first alliance to automate these types of fares for agents using the Sabre GDS. We know that our partners in the travel agent community appreciate automated faring, especially on tickets such as these, which is why we are pleased to make this a reality.”

Amadeus has strengthened its position in the Taiwanese market following the signing of a major new deal with China Airlines.

The new agreement will see Taiwan’s national carrier adopt the full Amadeus Altéa suite of IT solutions, including Amadeus’ first Chinese language offerings.

China Airlines and its subsidiary, Mandarin Airlines, will both implement Amadeus’ passenger service system (PSS) and e-commerce platform, allowing them to manage the majority of their operations, including inventory, reservations, passenger self–service check-in and departure control.

“We are pleased to partner with Amadeus as they support us in catering to the growing Taiwanese travel market as well as the broader Asian aviation and travel industry,” said KC Kuey, who manages the PSS programme for China Airlines.

“Their Chinese language offering tailored to suit our needs is a testimony to how they consistently place customers first. This will go a long way in helping us become increasingly flexible and scalable in our operations.”

China Airlines will join a group of more than 120 airlines using the Amadeus Altéa suite, including more than half the carriers in the SkyTeam alliance, of which China Airlines is a member.

Garuda Indonesia has signed a new codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines that will give it access to the US market.

Under the new arrangement, Garuda will place its ‘GA’ code on Delta’s flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Los Angeles and Seattle. The flights will be timed to connect with Garuda’s flights between Jakarta and Haneda.

Garuda and Delta are partners in the SkyTeam Alliance.

“This partnership is part of Garuda’s strategy to enhance its network worldwide, especially to the United States,” explained Erik Meijer, Garuda’s executive vice president of marketing & sales.

“Through this codeshare agreement both carriers will offer more options to our respective customers for more convenient schedules and seamless travel between the two countries. This partnership is… part of Delta and Garuda’s initiative as joint members of the SkyTeam global alliance.”

The new codeshare flights are pending final government approvals and are expected to be available for purchase in July 2014.

Delta’s trans-Pacific flights from Haneda are operated using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, while Garuda serves the Haneda route using its Airbus A330-300. Both aircraft offer full flat-bed seats in business class.

Garuda Indonesia is hoping to become known as a “global airline” following its induction into the SkyTeam Alliance.

The national carrier officially became SkyTeam’s 20th member in a ceremony in Bali on 5 March 2013, joining the likes of Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM and Korean Air.

Garuda is renewing its fleet, including the addition of long-range Boeing 777s
Garuda is renewing its fleet, including the addition of long-range Boeing 777s

This major development comes less than five years since Garuda was removed from the EU’s aviation blacklist, and forms part of a ‘Quantum Leap’ strategy that includes revamping the airline’s fleet, raising standards, and turning Garuda into a global brand.

“Becoming a member of SkyTeam will further strengthen Garuda Indonesia’s reputation as a world class airline, and puts it on par with other leading global airlines,” the national carrier’s president & CEO, Emirsyah Satar, told attendees at the signing ceremony.

Satar said that the SkyTeam membership could lead to a 3-5% increase in passenger numbers, although he added that more work needs to be done to get word out to the flying public.”

“We just need to work together and with passengers so they know we’re a member of Sky Team,” he said.

But there are good reasons for Garuda to be optimistic; by joining SkyTeam the airline will be able to tap a network of 1,064 new destinations, covering over 90% of the most relevant traffic flows in the world. “We will be feeding more passengers to SkyTeam and they will feed to us,” said Satar.

Garuda will become SkyTeam's 20th member
Garuda will become SkyTeam’s 20th member

SkyTeam also gains from the partnership; Garuda’s network will add 40 new destinations to the alliance’s route map, including many fast-growing Indonesian cities.

Among the dignitaries who attended the Bali ceremony was Mari Elka Pangestu, Indonesia’s minister of tourism & creative economy, who said the move would boost the country’s travel industry.

SkyTeam’s network will “help promote Indonesia as a destination that can really help tourism”, she said in a dinner speech at the signing ceremony.

And there is plenty of scope for growth in terms of Indonesian tourism. Last year Southeast Asia’s largest and most populous country welcomed just 8.8 million international visitors – just a third of the totals achieved by Thailand or Malaysia.

But with Garuda launching its first flights to London in May 2014, and being able to tap into SkyTeam’s global traffic flow of approximately 588 million passengers, the future for both Garuda and Indonesia looks bright.

Garuda currently flies to 64 destinations in 12 countries, including 40 domestic hubs, from its bases in Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Medan, Surabaya and Balikpapan. It is also in the process of expanding its operations in Europe, with flights to London due to commence in May.

The SkyTeam alliance has tripled the number of self-service check-in kiosks available at Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

Passengers can now use one of 90 SkyTeam-branded kiosks to check in at the airport’s Terminal 1 North. Previously, SkyTeam’s member airlines operated self-service kiosks at their own check-in areas, with approximately 30 available.

The new SkyTeam self-service kiosks are now available to customers travelling from Narita on Air France, Aeromexico, Alitalia, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air and KLM flights.

SkyTeam’s new kiosks are the latest development in the alliance’s SkyPort initiative, intended to provide a smoother airport experience for its passengers. Earlier this year, SkyTeam opened a fast-track security lane at Narita for premium passengers and frequent flyers.

“Tokyo Narita is an important airport for SkyTeam; we have thousands of passengers flying on our services each day and customer feedback has been extremely positive,” said Tae Joon Kim, SkyTeam’s vice president of airport services.

“Our investment in technology is improving the services we offer at Narita by saving customers valuable time that they can put to better use before they fly.”

SkyTeam said that since their installation, the new self-service kiosks have already reduced counter check-in queues and lobby congestion at Narita.

The three major alliances have voiced their support for Heathrow

The three major global airline alliances – Oneworld, Star and SkyTeam – have all announced their support for Heathrow airport, increasing its chances of successfully gaining a third runway.

The organisations, which include carriers like British Airways (BA), Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa, have all voiced their support for staying in west London, reported the Financial Times today.

The last couple of weeks have seen around 50 proposals submitted to the Airports Commission, which will be considered by Sir Howard Davies before he puts his recommendations to government.

BA, which is currently based at Heathrow, has made it clear that it wants to stay at the airport and Oneworld has said its views reflect that of its main alliance member. Star Alliance plans to move many of its members – including United Airlines – into Heathrow’s Terminal 2, which is due to open next year so thus would also be against moving.

“This will allow us to effectively compete with the other alliances in Heathrow and add to the quality of our services and therefore we do not see any opportunity for us to make a change to another airport,” a statement from Star read.

In a letter to Sir Howard Davies, Tae Joon Kim, SkyTeam’s vice president of airport services wrote: “Relocating to another London or UK airport is not an option for our members.”

Gatwick, which has itself proposed a new runway, is trying to lure one of the alliances away from Heathrow, however it has as yet not been unsuccessful.

SkyTeam has opened a new lounge at Istanbul’s Atatürk International Airport.

Available to elite FFP and premium passengers flying from the airport on any of the 10 SkyTeam member airlines that serve Istanbul, the new lounge measures 350m² and can hold 90 passengers at a time. Xiamen Airlines has become a full member of the SkyTeam alliance.

The carrier, which is based in southeast China’s Fujian province and owned by Guangzhou-based China Southern, becomes the alliance’s 19th member and its sixth in Asia Pacific. It also becomes SkyTeam’s third full member in mainland China, following China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, giving SkyTeam the strongest Chinese coverage of any airline alliance. The presence of China Airlines, along with Xiamen Airlines, also gives SkyTeam a strong presence in the fast-expanding cross-Strait market between China and Taiwan.

“Today we… strengthen SkyTeam’s footprint in China,” said Michael Wisbrun, SkyTeam’s managing director. “Greater China remains a priority region for our alliance. Xiamen Airlines will join our members China Southern, China Eastern and China Airlines in developing customer-focused initiatives for the region.”

Xiamen Airlines currently operates domestic and cross-Strait routes from its three hubs – Xiamen, Fuzhou and Hangzhou. It also operates international flights to Singapore, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur.

It plans to expand further however, with flights to Europe, North America and Australasia due to commence in 2014, following the delivery of its six Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

“Membership of SkyTeam will enable us to deliver enhanced customer benefits as we diversify and grow our network and this is key to the success of our new international routes,” said Che Shanglun, president & CEO of Xiamen Airlines. “Our passengers can anticipate exciting new destinations while we look forward to a future of cooperation with our alliance partners.”

Argentina’s national carrier, Aerolineas Argentinas, has joined the SkyTeam alliance.

The airline becomes SkyTeam’s 18th member and its first in South America. Its membership will add 40 new destinations to the SkyTeam network.

“Today also marks a significant milestone in our efforts to strengthen our South American network. With the rapidly growing demand for travel to South America and Argentina, Aerolíneas Argentinas adds real value to our alliance by opening up extensive business and leisure travel opportunities for our customers,” said Michael Wisbrun, SkyTeam’s Managing Director.

“Looking forward, we will continue to focus on this continent. Our founding members Delta and Aeroméxico are significant players in the Latin American market and are leading the way in terms of finding new opportunities in this region. Delta has expanded its cooperation with Brazil’s GOL and Aeroméxico, by building ground-breaking commercial agreements. These will pave the way for further opportunities for SkyTeam and our customers,” he added.

From its hubs in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, Saudia operates a comprehensive network throughout the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian Subcontinent and Northern Africa. Saudia adds 51 new destinations to SkyTeam’s global network, including 23 within Saudi Arabia. Examples of new destinations are: Islamabad, Pakistan; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Alexandria, Egypt.

Michael Wisbrun, SkyTeam’s managing director said: “We are responding to passenger demand for increased travel choice within the Middle East by adding a significant player from the region. This allows us to offer more destinations, while continuing our focus on enhancing products and services for our global customers.”

“Joining SkyTeam is an integral part of Saudia’s long-term transformation strategy, which includes rebranding our airline, restructuring core operations and enhancing onboard products and airport services,” said HE Khalid Al-Molhem, Saudia’s director general.

Prior to joining SkyTeam, Saudia embarked on a four-year turnaround program, which will be completed by 2013. As a key part of this program, the airline took the opportunity to refresh its corporate identity and change its name.

China Southern Airlines has begun rolling out the SkyTeam alliance’s new SkyPriority services.

The new initiative, which is being progressively rolled across the network of SkyTeam’s member airlines, will offer VIP treatment to premium passengers. China Southern has become the first SkyTeam member in China to add the service, which is initially being launched at its Guangzhou and Beijing hubs. All of the airline’s Chinese hubs are expected to offer the service by the end of the year.

The programme provides Elite Plus and Gold Card members with access to VIP services available at each airport including China Southern’s new business class lounge at Guangzhou’s Baiyun Airport. As the name suggests, SkyPriority offers priority check-in, boarding, transfers, ticketing and baggage delivery with signage directing eligible passengers to dedicated staff and services.

All SkyTeam member airlines are expected to roll out the service at more than 1,000 airports around the world, including 164 used by China Southern, by the end of the year.
