Johannesburg based airline, Airlink, is doubling its scheduled flight service between South Africa and St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean – one of the remotest islands in the world – to a seasonal twice-weekly flight.

In addition to the regular scheduled weekly flight that operates each Saturday from Johannesburg, a second weekly flight originating in Johannesburg will operate to St Helena during the period 28 November 2023 to the end of February 2024. These flights will take place on a Tuesday. This will result in a further 13 return flights available to travellers in addition to the weekly flights over the peak season.

The resumption of regular twice weekly flights to St Helena will not only deliver more capacity for passengers to travel to the island, but also provide greater options and certainty to visitors, tour operators, and the local private sector. Most notably, the increases to both passenger capacity and flight frequency mean that prospective travellers have more certainty that seats will be available at their preferred times of travel, whilst offering them more flexibility around travel dates and lengths of stays.

Matt Joshua, Head of St Helena Tourism said: “We are delighted that twice weekly flights will resume to the island, offering more choice and flexibility for visitors to the island.

“St Helena offers the perfect getaway for travellers looking to escape the crowds and we look forward to meeting the demand from travellers wanting to experience one of the UK’s oldest overseas territories and most remote inhabited islands on the planet.”

A British Oversees Territory in the middle of the South Atlantic, St Helena was first colonised by British settlers in the Seventeenth Century. Today, the small island is home over 4,000 inhabitants, known locally as Saints, who are famed for their hospitality and welcoming nature.

The island is a haven for walkers with over 20 nature trails designed by the St Helena Nature Conservation Group showcasing some of the most scenic and untouched areas of the island. For history enthusiasts, the island is soaked in a rich history, allowing travellers to get an insight into its role in fighting the slave trade, acting as a Boer Prisoner of War site, and holding key sites associated with Napoleon, including his tomb.

For divers visiting the island, there are eight shipwrecks around St Helena to visit, many of which are scattered with articles of marine archaeological interest such as cannons and anchors. Visitors who arrive between June and December can glimpse Humpback Whales with their calves.

The island continues to champion sustainability and was recently named the best eco-location and sustainable tourism destination in the 2022 World Commerce Review awards. Selected by an expert panel, the award recognises destinations that have placed the environment at the heart of their tourism programmes, with St Helena being commended for their innovation, expertise, and excellence in this field.

A fabulous evening of camaraderie, great music, fantastic food and a brilliant array of wines and drinks at the high-tech, high-energy refurbished Montien Hotel in the heart of Bangkok.

Mr Graham Macdonald MBE, Chairman of the South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce (SATCC), welcomed all attendees

It was a spectacular evening put together by the chamber’s Jabulani Social team, with Linda and Benita smoothly orchestrating proceedings.

Mr Ragil Ratnam acting as MC, invited Mr Graham Macdonald, Chairman of the South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce (SATCC), to the podium to welcome over 200 guests and supporters.

It was the long-awaited return of the annual charity evening of music, food and dance by the South African-Thai Chamber in a post-Covid world.

With generous sponsorship and great door prizes, including two return flight tickets from Bangkok to Johannesburg courtesy of Ethiopian Airlines.

Money from the event will be donated to Nak Suu Charity. The Nak Suu Rugby Academy is a charity program based in Bangkok. Using Rugby as its building block, it was created to encourage and educate children on positive life choices, values, and skills. The Nak Suu Rugby Academy works directly with children and youth at risk.

Making a welcome return were South African duo Qadasi & Maqhinga

This year’s South Africa Ball was billed as “Bring your Swing to the Sounds of Africa!” and was a resounding success. The South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce organised a wonderful, vibrant evening of South African food, wine and live entertainment by the dynamic South African duo Qadasi & Maqhinga. The DJ, Daniel Poole, kept the party mood swinging.

Looking after the service side, the ever-present and affable General Manager of the Montien Hotel Surawong, Mr Pierre-Andre Pelletier, was seen everywhere, ensuring a smooth operation!

The dress code was traditional/colourful evening wear, with many embracing the colourful theme. The new ballroom with its LED pillars looked terrific. Perfectly matching the theme of the Ball.

Emirates will be bringing new travel opportunities, choice and convenience for customers traveling to and from South Africa with additional services to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The ramp up of flights are part of the airline’s ongoing commitment to support South Africa’s economic and tourism recovery through enhanced connectivity across all of its gateways. The airline’s latest move also reaffirms South Africa’s strategic importance on its network, as it prioritises service expansion and rebuilding its capacity to unlock further growth potential.

The airline will be expanding its schedule to and from Johannesburg with three daily flights from 1 March 2023. Cape Town will be served with double daily services starting from 1 February 2023. Emirates will also be adding two more flights to Durban, making it a daily operation from 1 December 2022.  The reintroduction of the new flights between Dubai and the airline’s three gateways in South Africa will enhance Emirates’ schedule to 42 weekly services.

Emirates’ flight EK 767 from Dubai to Johannesburg will operate with a Boeing 777 aircraft, complementing its double daily A380 operation. The flight will depart at 2325hrs, arriving at 0535hrs the next day to Johannesburg.  The return flight will depart Johannesburg at 2220hrs and arrives in Dubai at 0820hrs the next morning. The third daily flight from Johannesburg will help meet high demand with more than 300 available seats each way, and will offer additional flexibility for South African travellers with a new evening departure* for easier connectivity to Europe, the Americas, West Asia and Far East via Dubai.

Emirates’ second daily service to Cape Town will depart Dubai at 0910hrs, landing at 1645hrs. It will then depart Cape Town at 1325hrs, arriving in Dubai at 0110hrs the next day. With the double daily service to Cape Town, the airline will have restored its pre-pandemic schedule, supporting the city’s tourism industry right during peak season arrivals by providing convenient connectivity from key source markets such as Europe, the Middle East, West Asia and Australasia. As part of its longstanding commitment to support tourism recovery efforts in South Africa, Emirates and the South African Tourism Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year to jointly promote tourism and boost visitor arrivals to South Africa across the airline’s network of over 130 passenger destinations.

The additional services to all three gateways will also benefit customers with more connecting choices to an array of domestic and regional cities across Southern Africa via Emirates’ codeshare and interline partners including South African Airways, Airlink, FlySafair and Cemair. The unique connections and onward travel options are not offered by any other airline.

Customers flying between Dubai and South Africa can look forward to an elevated experience across every cabin class, with thoughtfully designed menus and locally sourced beverages, signature amenities and exceptional hospitality delivered by the airline’s diverse, multinational crew.

The airline continues to raise the bar on the premium experience for its South African customers with a local selection of South African wines including Ken Forrester, Porseleinberg, Klein Constantia, Waterkloof, Boekenhoutskloof, amongst others. In addition to this, customers can look forward to dining on authentic, proudly South African dishes and flavours with an array of local cheeses and Rooibos-inspired cuisine.

In addition to providing much needed seat capacity in and out of South Africa, Emirates’ new flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban will collectively provide more cargo belly-hold capacity to further scale up import and export opportunities for local businesses, helping carry vital exports including seafood, fruits and vegetables, fresh and frozen meats, wine, pharmaceuticals, and gold – between the UAE, South Africa and beyond.

This follows a period of contractual negotiations between St Helena Government and the airline.

Initially Airlink is expected to offer a weekly Saturday service to-and-from South Africa to St Helena using the new Embraer E190-100IGW ETOPS certified aircraft. To begin with, the maximum number of seats available on each flight will be 76.

Currently the aircraft is planned to depart Johannesburg each Saturday morning at 09:00 local time and fly to Windhoek in Namibia where it will refuel and connect with an incoming Airlink service from Cape Town that will have departed at 10:30.

Passengers will then fly on to St Helena landing on the Island at 13:15. Total flight time from Johannesburg and Cape Town to St Helena will be just over 6 hours, including the stop at Windhoek. Flight time from Windhoek to St Helena is 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The return flight to South Africa will depart on Saturdays from St Helena at 14:30 and again fly to Windhoek where passengers will be able to connect with an Airlink service to Cape Town or fly on to Johannesburg. The flight is expected to arrive back in Johannesburg at 22:30 local time with the connecting passengers landing in Cape Town at 23:00.

“Scheduled air services are what is needed to build a sustainable tourism industry on St Helena,” said the island’s director of tourism, Christopher Pickard.

“As much as we are going to miss the RMS St Helena, not everyone has two weeks to travel to and from the Island by ship. The Airlink service connects the major hubs of Cape Town and Johannesburg to St Helena in hours, rather than days, and we now hope that many of the people who visit South Africa, as well as South Africans, will consider adding St Helena as a destination to their trip. It is an experience they won’t forget or regret.”

Dr Niall O’Keeffe, chief executive for Economic Development, Enterprise St Helena said: “As a remote small island developing state, the onset of air services is crucial to enable the development of a sustainable economy in the long-term. The opportunities for tourism and investment as the Island opens up as the newest air destination in the world, cannot be overstated. That said, we want to ensure any development is protective of the wonderful culture and environment of St Helena. These are very exciting times.”

On the second Saturday of each month the flight will continue on from St Helena as a chartered service to Ascension Island. The plane will stay overnight on Ascension returning to St Helena on Sunday to offer a matching flight schedule as Saturday, for passengers returning to South Africa or connecting with flights to the rest of the world.

Airlink is currently finalising regulatory approval with the South African Civil Aviation Authority, and following the necessary approvals and proving flight, St Helena Government will be able to announce the commencement date of services as well as fares and the confirmed flight schedule. As demand and interest in St Helena grows, Airlink and St Helena Government hope to add other weekly flights to the schedule.

St Helena Airport has been operational since May 2016, but Airlink will offer the first scheduled air service to the remote island. Prior to this the Airport has catered primarily to charter and medevac flights and the Island only reachable by tourists after a five night voyage up from Cape Town on the iconic RMS St Helena, the last working Royal Mail Ship.

Visitors to bars in London and Manchester looking for some escapism in April may get more than they bargained for, with South African Tourism launching its ‘Five-minute holiday’ promotion.  virtual-reality

SAT is taking over bars in the two cities to surprise visitors with the chance to ‘escape’ to South Africa by watching a short film on the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift. Through 360-degree head tracking, Oculus Rift allows viewers to explore the virtual world just as they would in real life. Innovative binaural sound accompanies the video, creating a truly immersive experience.

The ‘Five-minute holiday’ takes the viewer to Table Mountain, where they experience what it’s like to abseil down a sheer cliff, with full-circle views of the sea behind and city in the distance. Viewers are then absorbed into other adventurous scenes, such as kite-surfing, paragliding and feeding elephants, before relaxing in a bar in Johannesburg’s Neighbourgoods Market.

All scenes were filmed exclusively in South Africa, where the Oculus Rift technology was adapted accordingly. A shark cage-diving scene in Cape Town required the footage to be shot underwater, using a specially 3D-printed underwater camera rig.

Two lucky winners can visit the country for real, courtesy of KLM, which is giving away two pairs of tickets to South Africa, departing from either London Heathrow Airport or Manchester Airport. Bar visitors just need to register their contact details on the day with the ‘Brand Warriors’ on site to be entered in to the competition.

Emirates Boeing 777-300ER landed in Durban’s King Shaka International Airport on June 1st. The new 354-seat aircraft introduces Emirates’ first class cabin on the Durban route and boosts passenger capacity by close to 30%.

The airline previously operated the smaller capacity Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the Durban route, currently serves 22 passenger and cargo destinations across the African continent after the addition of Zambia and Zimbabwe in February this year.

“The introduction of the new Boeing 777 is a direct response to increasing passenger demand on this route,” said Fouad Caunhye, Emirates’ regional manager, Southern Africa. “Emirates carried over 165,000 passengers on flights to and from Durban in 2011. With the new Boeing 777 service we expect this to grow by nearly a third.”

The Boeing 777 offers eight private suites in First Class, 42 lie-flat beds in Business Class and 304 generously-sized Economy Class seats.
