The new Stansted operation represents the airline’s ninth UK base.

Speaking at the airline’s annual general meeting, Philip Meeson, chairman and CEO of Jet2.com’s parent company, Dart Group, said: “We believe that London Stansted has great potential for our holiday business, serving the populations of North and East London and the East of England.

“In view of the significant investment which will be committed in the second half of this financial year to launch our London Stansted and recently announced Birmingham Airport bases, it is likely that Group operating profit will be slightly behind current market expectations despite the good trading performance achieved in the year to date.”

The Group will provide a further update when it announces its interim results for the six months ending 30 September on 17 November.

Discussing the airline’s current business outlook, Meeson said: “Though airline ticket yields and load factors are slightly lower than those achieved in summer 2015, this is against a backdrop of a 13% increase in seat capacity. Leisure Travel bookings for winter 2016/17 are satisfactory at this early stage.”

Stansted Airport has launched a consultation on how it can make use of its single runway capacity.

A framework for growth is being established by the Essex airport to grow its passenger count to up to 45 million passengers annually.

Using its existing capacity the airport could generate another 10,000 on-site jobs and GBP4.6 billion to the economy.

A series of public exhibitions will take place near the airport in the coming two months so locals can voice their opinions.

“Stansted’s potential for sustainable growth will be of enormous value as the UK strives to develop its global connectivity to support increased trade and investment, and these issues will be central to the Airports Commission’s work as it develops its final recommendations to Government,” said Stansted’s managing director Andrew Harrison. “This plan highlights the vital role that the existing capacity of Stansted’s single runway will play over the next 10-15 years in meeting these challenges, showing how the airport can more than double the number of passengers it serves and provide greater choice and variety for passengers.”

The plans have been backed by Ryanair, easyJet and local business groups.

Stansted Airport has seen 1.9 million more passengers pass through its terminal in July compared to the same month last year.

A strategy for route growth under new owners Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has helped the Essex airport see a 12.2% increase in July traffic to 1.94 million people.

This comes after the number of transport movements increased 1, 349 year-on-year, or 11.4%, to 13, 152.

Year-to-date its passenger numbers have increased by on million, or 5.6% to 18.69 million.

“When M.A.G acquired Stansted Airport just 18 months ago it set out to return the airport to growth and make it the best airport in London. I’m delighted to see that growth potential become a reality with the airport now serving a million more passengers than it did a year ago and monthly passenger numbers increasing by more than 12% to give us our busiest single month for nearly three years,” said the airport’s managing director Andrew Harrison.

Around GBP260 million has been spent revamping the airport’s facilities which will soon include an extended border control area with 15 ePassport gates to make immigration quicker.

An investigation is underway after two Ryanair aircraft collided at Stansted Airport on Saturday morning.

One Boeing 737-800 heading to Warsaw and another that had just landed at the Essex airport from Frankfurt were damaged from the collision at the airport at around 6.50am.

One aircraft had the wing tip damaged while the tail cone came off the other. Both pilots were breathalysed at the scene which both returned with zero, according to a report by The Independent.

The incident led to three hour delays at Stansted, as passengers disembarked the Ryanair aircraft. They later left the airport on two replacement planes.

A Stansted Airport spokesperson said: “We can confirm two aircraft were involved in a minor collision while on the ground at Stansted this morning. Both planes suffered some damage but there were no reported injuries to passengers or crew. The airport is operating as normal while an Air Accidents Investigation Branch investigation takes place.”

The airport has carried more than 18.2 million people this year so far, up from 17.7m in 2013.

The figures were up 7.6% for May alone with 1.8 million passengers.

“The increased number of passengers using Stansted during May is very encouraging, continues the growth trend we’ve experienced at the airport over the last year and reflects the strong confidence of our airline partners as they add more key routes and increase frequency,” said managing director Andrew Harrison.

MAG is spending GBP80 million on its terminal with its retail redevelopment in the departure lounge to open soon.

Stansted Airport has unveiled a new campaign to promote its route network amongst local markets.

The airport is boasting its 150 direct scheduled connections into Europe throughout the promotion, which will run across Essx, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and parts of London.

Recent new routes at the airport include Ryanair’s services to France and Morocco while flights to Switzerland, Romania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Sweden and Montenegro will come online soon.

In addition Loganair has announced flights from the airport to Dundee, while Atlantic Airways will offer services to the Faroe Islands.

“Stansted has been one of London’s best kept secrets for too long now, and it’s time we told passengers what they’re missing out on.The airport has an unrivalled network of European destinations and is the south-east’s most punctual major airport so our ‘Fly Stansted’ campaign is designed to drive home the message that we really are the European airport for London – both in terms of choice and on-time performance,” said the airport’s managing director Andrew Harrison.

Stansted is clawing back the passengers it has lost in the last few years but still only carries 12 million of the 46 million journeys made each year by those living near the airport.

“We’re already making really good progress in cutting through the myths that have surrounded Stansted in the past and I’m sure our ‘Fly Stansted’ campaign will boost awareness of what’s on offer at the airport,” added Harrison.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) will be celebrating this week after Stansted Airport saw its first full year of passenger growth in six years.

The Essex airport carried more than 17.84 million people in 2013, representing a 2.2% increase compared to 2012.

It is the first time since 2007 that the airport has managed to see an increase in passenger numbers, after a series of route cuts damaged its figures.

December was the airport’s fourth consecutive month of growth with a 7.7% rise in passengers year-on-year.

MAG’s Manchester Airport also performed well in 2013, seeing its 19th consecutive month of passenger growth in December 2013. The airport flew 1.3 million passengers last month, up 5.4% year-on-year.

“Stansted has enjoyed a very positive and encouraging first ten months under the new ownership of MAG. December’s traffic results are a clear indication that Stansted is back and successfully competing with other London airports,” said the airport’s managing director Andrew Harrison.

“We now expect the airport to enter a period of sustained growth this year following the signing of long-term agreements with both Ryanair and easyJet. These deals will ensure Stansted is once again London’s fastest growing airport over the next five years and will see the airport serving more than 30 million passengers a year by 2024. We also believe Stansted will be full by around 2030 when we reach the current planning limit of 35 million passengers a year.”

MAG is now focused on developing long-haul routes from Stansted and is drumming up local businesses to put forward the case for direct links to the Middle East, North America and Asia.

Its GBP80 million redevelopment also continues with a new security area opening before Christmas and an on-going campaign to improve rail services to and from the capital.

Heathrow Airport will be forced to cut its charges

Heathrow Airport will be forced to cut its airline charges by 1.5% as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) looks at ways to balance competition at London’s airports.

Charges will fall from GBP20.71 in 2013/14 to GBP19.10 in 2018/19, with the drop expected to provide cheaper airfares.

With the reduction in income Heathrow would have to reduce its operational expenditure by more than GBP600 million and will stretch commercial revenue targets from retail and car park charges.

However the airport’s chief executive Colin Matthews said it will also be forced to review its investment plans.

“We are concerned by the degree of change since the CAA’s final proposals just a short while ago. In October the CAA accepted the need for changes to their April proposals, but has now reverted to a draconian position,” said Colin Matthews, chief executive of Heathrow Airport.

“We want to continue to improve Heathrow for passengers. We will review our investment plan to see whether it is still financeable in light of the CAA’s settlement,” he added.

Airlines argued the move by the CAA was not enough after seeing prices triple in the last 10 years.

“We were baffled at the CAA’s decision in October to increase the Heathrow settlement from their original recommendation. Today’s decision is a far cry from the reduction needed to mitigate the incredibly steep price rises customers have seen in Heathrow airport charges in the last few years,” said Craig Kreeger, CEO of Virgin Atlantic. “We will be carefully considering our right to appeal on behalf of our passengers who will ultimately pay the price for the CAA’s decision.”

What about the other airports?

Gatwick: Although the CAA has continued to accept the airport’s contracting framework it is disappointed that it is still seen as having substantial market power and needs an economic licence from the CAA. Charges at Gatwick are currently at GBP8.07 and have been assessed to drop RPI -1.6%.

Stansted: The Essex airport will be removed from economic regulation from April this year after the CAA found it has not substantial market power. Owners MAG said the CAA announcement was a ‘welcome endorsement’ to initiatives in the 10 months that aim to turn its fortunes around.

“Our passengers have told us they want to get through security as quickly and safely as possible and we believe the additional space, easier access and improved way-finding in a great new location flooded with natural light is a real step change that will get passengers through security more quickly and efficiently,” he added.

Ryanair has agreed a new long-term growth deal with Stansted Airport’s new owners M.A.G after previously cutting back services from the Essex airport.

MAG and Ryanair have agreed a new 10-year deal which will see the low-cost carrier increase its passenger count at the airport, starting with new routes to Lisbon, Bordeaux, Dortmund and Rabat, Morocco.

Ryanair currently carries more than 13 million passengers a year from the airport and hopes to increase this to 18 million by 2018 and 21 million by 2023.

The airline had previously scaled back its operation from the airport after seeing fees rise under previous owners BAA.

“Ryanair is pleased to have agreed a new 10 year growth deal at London Stansted with M.A.G. This deal will see our Stansted traffic grow by more 50%, from 13.2m in 2012 to more 20m p.a. in return for lower costs and more efficient facilities at Stansted,” said Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary. “This agreement proves how UK airports can flourish when released from the dead hand of the BAA monopoly and is the first dramatic initiative by M.A.G to reverse seven years of decline, during which Stansted’s traffic fell from 23.8m to 17.5m.”

Stansted Airport has suffered in recent years with passenger numbers and routes, and has services mainly offered by low-cost carriers.

In addition to the new routes, MAG also has plans to upgrade the terminal with a GBP80 million investment.

“The new long term agreement between Ryanair and MAG at Stansted shows that competition really does work, and it represents great news for both passengers and UK businesses,” said MAG’s chief commercial officer Ken O’Toole.

“We acquired Stansted in February this year believing we could significantly expand the services on offer by competing more effectively to make the most of the airport’s untapped potential and spare capacity. We were confident Stansted would grow if we offered great value to airlines, increased passenger choice and better services and facilities,” he added.

O’Toole said MAG will “compete hard” to win airline business in its own bid to become the “best airport in London”.

Stansted Airport’s baggage staff are planning a bank holiday weekend strike

Baggage handlers at London Stansted airport are to strike over bank holiday weekend because of a pay dispute.

The planned action will take place from 3:30am until 6:00am and then 3:30pm until 6:00pm starting on Friday 23 August and lasting for four days. The workers are members of the GMB Union and employed by Mitie.

The BBC reported that Stansted was planning on talking to Mitie about the potential effects of the dispute.

A spokesman for Mitie said: “We hope that we will be able to reach an agreement with the union, but if we can’t, full contingency plans will be put into place to ensure any disruption to passengers is kept to a minimum.”

GMB regional officer Gary Pearce said: “Mitie are expecting GMB members to agree to the removal of premium rates for working nights or overtime worth 3.5% to pay for a pay rise of 2%.

“In spite of months of talks telling the company this was not acceptable to our members, they went ahead and imposed these pay cuts from June.”

Baggage scanners at Stansted Airport have voted to strike over the August bank holiday weekend.

Forty members of the GMB union, who scan bags before they are loaded onto aircraft, are due to strike at 330 and 1530 for two and a half hours from Friday 23 August to Tuesday 27.

Travellers due to fly during that period will either be delayed or will travel with only cabin bags.

The GMB union said 92% of its members were in favour of industrial action over backdated pay cuts proposed by their employer Mitie.

An airport spokesperson told the Telegraph it hoped to reach an agreement with the union but if not will minimise disruption for the 30,000 due to fly each day during the weekend.

Thomas Cook will have an increased Stansted presence

Thomas Cook Airlines has announced it will add eight new services from Stansted Airport next summer with an extra aircraft at the base.

Two of the company’s Airbus A321s will be based at the airport from June 2014 giving extra capacity to the one A319 it currently has at the Essex airport. New services will include flights to Corfu, Fuerteventura, Heraklion, Izmir, Kefalonia, Kos, Rhodes and Skiathos as well as increase frequencies on other routes.

“We believe that this area of the country is currently underserved with respect of airport departures to holiday destinations and that demand exists to make our partnership with the airport a continued success,” said the airline’s director of planning Rob Thompson.

“With more flights, more holidays and a more frequent service to the most popular resorts, next summer is set to bring an unprecedented Thomas Cook holiday atmosphere to Stansted,” he added.

The airport’s managing director Andrew Harrison hailed the announcement as a “significant step on the road” as Stansted’s new owners look to recuperates its loss of services in recent years.

“This new agreement with Thomas Cook demonstrates their confidence in M.A.G to deliver great value and quality service at Stansted. There is huge demand for air travel in our catchment area, and we know people prefer to fly from their local airport when possible, so this fantastic news is a real positive development in providing more choice and more flights to even more destinations for passengers in London and the eastern region,” explained Harrison.

Cardiff and Stansted airports were put to the test yesterday when British Airway’s Airbus A380 touched down ahead of its official launch this autumn.

BA said it hopes Cardiff will be able to handle the A380 if a diversion from Heathrow is needed.

The tests also showed how the airports can accommodate larger aircraft as both look to increase flight options after being taking over by new owners. Cardiff Airport was acquired by the Welsh government earlier this year, while Stansted is now owned by Manchester Airport Group.

“This is a big day for us at Cardiff; welcoming the world’s largest commercial airliner to Wales and showcasing Cardiff’s capability. The airport is able to accept large aircraft and this is the first A380 to operate here, and the first opportunity for the airport team to handle one. Today was a very successful collaboration and proves to the world the opportunity in operating in Cardiff,” said Cardiff Airport’s CEO Jon Horne.

Andrew Harrison, managing director at Stansted added: “Airlines using aircraft such as the A380 are exactly the type of carriers we are looking to attract to Stansted as we compete to win new business and put the airport back on a path to growth. Today was a test flight for BA and its A380 but it’s a significant milestone for Stansted and recognition we can accommodate any aircraft from anywhere in the world. Stansted has the ability to double the number of flights it handles almost overnight.”

A group campaigning against the expansion of Stansted Airport has called for the removal of an Airports Commission advisor because of a conflict of interest.

The Stop Stansted Expansion campaign wants Sir Howard Davies to remove former Manchester Airports Group (MAG) boss Geoff Muirhead as one of five advisors who sit on his panel.

According to The Sunday Times the group has threatened to take legal action unless he steps down within 14 days.

The report says that despite retiring in 2010, Muirhead has remained involved with the company, staying on as an “ambassador” until January 2013. MAG’s 2010-11 annual report has revealed he was paid GBP82,000 for consultancy services.

Stansted, along with other UK airports, have submitted a proposal to Sir Howard Davies’ Airport Commission, which will advise government how to deal with the UK’s civil aviation crisis.

Stansted Airport has marked the 70th anniversary of its runway yesterday (26 July), in a ceremony attended by a US world war two veteran to mark the airport’s history as an army base.

The Essex hub, which was known as George Washington Field during the war, marked the occasion by inviting 88-year old Major Edward W. Horn to be guest of honour. Horn was one of many US personnel to be based in Stansted at the time, with the runway itself completed by US army engineers in 1943.

He appeared with Colonel Travis Willis, Air Attaché from the US Embassy, Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Kuehne, the Commander of the 351st Air Refuelling Squadron, and Stansted Airport’s Managing Director Andrew Harrison.

Horn, who spent time as a German prisoner of war after being shot down over France while flying flying his 23rd mission from Stansted, planted a commemorative tree and said:

“70 years ago, I was flying my B-26 Marauder off this runway, and now I stand here today in remembrance of my fellow 344th Bomb Group airmen, and in honour of those who did not return from their missions.”

Stansted managing director Andrew Harrison said:

“I am delighted to welcome so many distinguished guests here today to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Stansted Airport’s runway and its origins as a wartime airfield. Not only is this a tribute to the airport’s illustrious past but it just shows what an integral role Stansted continues to play in our community and the wider region.

“To be able to welcome Major Edward Horn back to the airport for the first time in years is a particular poignant and humbling moment for me. We should be proud that our airport played a pivotal role in the allied victory, and a lot of this success is down to people like Major Horn and his fellow airman – many who tragically didn’t return to our shores. We owe them all an immense debt of gratitude for kindly giving us what is still one of the UK’s longest runways and the heartbeat of today’s world class airport.

Stansted has now submitted its plans to the Davies Commission

The owner of Stansted airport, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), has submitted its expansion plans to Sir Howard Davies’ Airports Commission.

The plans include a GBP10 million four runway hub.

The work could mean that capacity at the Essex airport would rise from 17.5 million to 160 million with the development of an additional runway to either the north-west or east of the current one.

The BBC quoted Charlie Cornish MAG’s chief executive saying that: “Stansted is uniquely placed to meet the UK’s aviation capacity needs now and over the next 15 years.

“Almost overnight Stansted could double the number of flights it handles without any need for significant investment in new infrastructure.

“Looking to the long-term, the interests of passengers wil be best served by a pragmatic appraoch, focused on delivering new capacity that is cost-effective and flexible, and capable of driving competition across the aviation industry.

“Developing new capacity at a number of airports is likely to be best for passengers.”

The Airports Commission has now received submissions from Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham and London Mayor Boris Johnson.  A shortlist will be produced at the end of the year and a final recommendation made in two years’ time.

Ryanair has posted record profits

Ryanair said it could “restart growth” at Stansted Airport and Dublin Airport this September if its talks with new owners are successful.

Any new routes or frequencies from the airports could be made if the talks offer the right commercial agreements for the low-cost carrier, which pulled services from the airports on the grounds of higher fees.

The carrier is also in talks with the Spanish airport monopoly AENA, the owner of more than 20 airports in popular tourist destinations, over potential growth opportunities in Spain.

Ryanair is also snapping up services where traditional carriers such as airberlin, SAS and LOT are scaling back, although the low-cost carrier said its route development is growing quicker than its fleet deliveries. As a result, the carrier will start receiving the first of 175 Boeing 737-800 aircraft from autumn 2014.

The route announcements come as the low-cost carrier announced a record high in full-year profits, up 13% compared to the previous year. The low-cost carrier saw its post-tax profits rise to EUR569 million with 5% more passengers at 79.3 million.

The airline is currently expecting its profits for the financial year to remain flat or see a slight increase.

“We expect modest yield and traffic growth for the full year to be partly offset by higher oil and Eurocontrol costs resulting in another year of profit growth in FY’14 which – subject to winter yield outturns – should increase to a range of between €570m to €600m,” said Michael O’Leary, chief executive of Ryanair.

“We are pleased to have reached acceptable  pricing with Boeing, and the controlled delivery programme from autumn 2014 to end of 2018 will provide the opportunity to expand Ryanair’s fleet to over 400 aircraft and our traffic to over 100m per annum,” he added.

The airline’s fuel costs rose EUR290m and represent 45% of its total costs.

Airport operator BAA has announced it is to sell Stansted Airport after losing battles in courts.

The company said it has decided not to appeal to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal’s agreed it should sell off the Essex airport due to competition rules.

Despite its decision, BAA said “We still believe that the Competition Commission ruling fails to recognise that Stansted and Heathrow serve different markets.”

BAA had previously sold off Gatwick and Edinburgh airports due to competition rulings and after the Stansted sale will still operate Heathrow, Southampton, Aberdeen and Glasgow. Around 17.5 million passengers use the airport each year and it is London’s third busiest airport.
