While a Valentine’s Day bouquet of long-stemmed roses and a box of chocolates can undoubtedly set the stage for romance, nothing is quite as swoon-worthy and memorable as a romantic trip made for two.  Paris, Italy, and Greece are some of the popular destinations on Valentine’s Day. Shake things up this year by visiting other locations.

tajawal, the Dubai-based online flight and hotel booking platform, listed some of the romantic destinations that are perfect for the upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend.

The Maldives

With cool temperatures in February, Oman offers an authentic Arabian cultural experience.

Cyprus

Honoured in Greek legend as the birthplace of Aphrodite, Cyprus is known for its fascinating history of archaeological sites making it the ideal destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Explore the ancient castles, marvel at the beauty of the waterfalls and get the chance to see exciting sea caves no matter what time of the year it is.

Georgia

According to a trends report released by Dubai-based online flight and hotel booking platform, tajawal, South East Asia is the summer hotspot for the UAE travellers. With its wealth of culture and vibrant street life, Bangkok leads the way with flight bookings up 164% compared to last year, closely followed by the cosmopolitan island paradise of Bali, up 150% over the same period. Outbound bookings to dynamic Kuala Lumpur with its gleaming skyscrapers and food stall-lined streets have also rocketed by 130% over the figures from 2018.

The popularity of South East Asia supports this year’s wider trend of UAE residents choosing overseas destinations over local staycations for their holidays. International hotel bookings on tajawal have increased to 74% this year from 45% in 2018 whilst domestic stays declined to 26% versus 55% last year. Mid-range boutique and upscale four-star hotels have also increased in popularity versus their luxury counterparts as travellers seek authentic experiences in cities across the globe.

Closer to home, Istanbul with its rich history and lively entertainment holds its position as one of the leading destinations for UAE travellers and South Caucasus tourism continues to grow with culture seekers and outdoor adventurers heading to Baku in Azerbaijan.

“City breaks remain the most popular choice for holidays from the UAE.”

Tajawal is also seeing the trend of multiple short breaks declining, with UAE residents taking longer holidays overseas. The average length of stay based on flight booking data has increased by 70% to 17 days as travellers look further afield to explore diverse cultures and climates. Many are also capitalising on the longer public holidays in 2019 to make the most of their vacation time.

Muzzammil Ahussain, executive vice president of tajawal said, “It’s interesting to see more UAE residents and citizens heading overseas this year and particularly to South East Asia, which is a relatively short flight away. City breaks remain the most popular choice for holidays from the UAE, with places like Singapore topping the list alongside Bangkok and Istanbul. Here in the UAE, we have a real appetite to see the world, demonstrated by an increase in spent of 30% and 50% on flights and hotels respectively across our booking platform.”

The average group size is also increasing in 2019, up 15% versus 2018 as more families and friends escape to cooler climes.

tajawal recently launched its hotel booking engine along with flight booking services, making it a full-scale online travel agency offering.

Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Al Tayyar Travel Group, tajawal launched its operations in January 2016 and achieved an annual run-rate of US$ 60 million by May, exceeding projected sales targets by 30% within first five months of operation.

The new launch offers 15,000 destinations around the world while choosing from an extensive mix of more than 160,000 hotels, ranging from budget and value hotels to five-star and luxury properties and resorts.

“We have seen phenomenal growth in our business since we launched and this was driven solely by our flight booking product. Adding hotel bookings to our service portfolio was a natural step forward,” said Muhammad Chbib, Founder and CEO, tajawal.

The hotel booking service will also offer flexibility, with the ‘Pay Now’ or ‘Pay Later’ and free cancellation options on most rooms.

Tajawal, the online travel platform of Saudi Arabia’s Al Tayyar Travel Group has exceeded its projected sales target by 30% in the first four months of its operation.

The company has also announced plans to rapidly expand over the next three to five years, plans to make a strong, multi-hundred-million US-Dollar investment push into the online space.

The announcement will be made at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2016, following success of tajawal’s beta-testing phase – during which the start-up crossed the US$ one million sales figure in six weeks.

The digital booking engine is confident of hitting sales of a billion dollars in less than five years, with a double-digit month-on-month growth. The company has developed a team from five experts to 80 online and travel professionals. While the beta-testing phase focused on launching their flight product, tajawal is set to launch its hotel booking engine in May, 2016.

“The online travel market offers a multi-billion dollar opportunity that is largely untapped in the region. We aim to fill this gap by creating a travel platform for mobile and web, based on an understanding of localized requirements. We look forward to creating a sustainable and profitable online travel business,” said Muhammad Chbib, founder and CEO, tajawal.

Currently, 75% of tajawal’s sales is generated from the website, while 25% comes from its free mobile applications, available for IOS and Android operating systems in English and Arabic. Saudi Arabian customers account for 65% of the bookings, while remaining 35% originate mostly in the UAE.
