The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) joined Thai AirAsia for a special activity taking place on the Bangkok-Krabi route on 29-30 June 2020, aimed at rebuilding confidence and revitalising domestic tourism. This was done by bringing together medical workers, tourists, business operators, and the media in a trip showcasing the readiness of airline, venues, travel destinations, hotels, and restaurants, to provide safe and hygienic service.

Governor of TAT, Yuthasak Supasorn, pointed out that domestic travel will be an important mechanism to jumpstart the economy at both the local and national levels, adding that this event will highlight traveling under the new normal, which focuses on adherence to healthcare advice, encouraging travellers and businesses alike to adapt and rehabilitate tourism.

The TAT’s goal for this activity is supporting domestic tourism and promoting awareness of various safety practices for travelling, visiting sites and staying in accommodation, so that travellers can prepare accordingly.  The authority assures that measures being promoted are straightforward and that everyone will be able to travel conveniently in the new normal.

Representatives from different sectors were invited to join in the activity, including medical professionals, travel companies and travel groups, all given the opportunity to experience present-day tourism using the concept “BEST, wherein B: Booking – covers before, during and after travel planning, travel companions, pre-booking and social distancing; E: Environment – covers environmental conservation and social responsibility; S: Safety – covers information for decision making as well as health and hygiene and T: Technology – incorporating the use of technology to facilitate contactless tourism and greater physical distancing.

CEO of Thai AirAsia, Santisuk Klongchaiya remarked that travel and domestic spending in the nation is crucial at this time to stimulate the economy and tourism sector, affirming AirAsia’s support for TAT.

From July onward, the airline will be resuming service to all 23 of its domestic destinations, including regional connections Chiang Mai-Hat Yai, Chiang Mai-Pattaya (U-Tapao), Hat Yai-Pattaya (U-Tapao) and Khon Kaen-Hat Yai for a total 25 routes, flying 68 return trips a day in support of travel and business.

AAV’s selection from the SET100 reflects its strong fundamentals as well as investor confidence, acknowledging its potential and adaptability along with the growth capacity of the aviation industry as a whole despite the severe impact from the COVID-19 outbreak.

Santisuk Klongchaiya, chief executive officer of Asia Aviation and Thai AirAsia said: “We have returned to the SET100 Index for the second half of 2020, in light of the resumption of domestic flights after the temporary hibernation due to COVID-19. Thai AirAsia celebrates the launch of the two new routes

Thai AirAsia will significantly boost its Indian network next month with the launch of two new routes.

The Bangkok-based low-cost carrier will kick off its expansion on 28 September 2017 with the start of direct flights to Tiruchirappalli, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Then a day later on 29 September, Thai AirAsia will start flying to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan.

These will increase the airline’s Indian network by 50% to six destinations, joining its existing services connecting Bangkok with Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Kochi.

“AirAsia plans to continually penetrate the Indian market in the latter half of 2017 as it is a major market with great growth potential,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia. “Indian travellers rank sixth among the most frequent visitors to Thailand… [and] the airline is confident that the two new routes will stimulate tourism for both countries.”

The Bangkok-Tiruchirappalli route will operate four times a week, departing Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at 2355 every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and returning the next morning. The Bangkok-Jaipur sector will also run four times a week, leaving Don Mueang at 2250 every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and returning the following morning.

Jaipur is also served by AirAsia India, while AirAsia Malaysia flies to Tiruchirappalli.

AirAsia has unveiled plans to launch a new service allowing Thai travellers to fly direct to the Maldives.

Commencing on 11 August 2017, the low-cost carrier will operate daily flights to the Indian Ocean archipelago, direct from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport.

Flights will be operated by Thai AirAsia using an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft, and promotional one-way introductory rates start from just THB1,990 (US$58).

“Many peoples’ perception of the Maldives is that it is costly and only caters to certain types of travellers, but today AirAsia is launching it so ‘Everyone Can Fly’ to the country to find out that it offers a wide variety of accommodations from guest houses to opulent resorts,” said Santisuk Klongchaiya, Thai AirAsia’s director of commercial.

“Without the need for a visa (for Thai nationals), travelling to the Maldives is now easier than ever and we are confident the route will see robust growth,” he added.

Under the new schedule, Thai AirAsia’s flights will depart Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport daily at 0930 and arrive at Male International Airport at 1140. The return services will then take off at 1230 and land back in Bangkok at 1900.

Thai AirAsia will become the third airline serving the route, following Bangkok Airways and Maldivian, which started flying to the Thai capital on 1 June 2017. The new route also complements AirAsia’s existing daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and the Maldives.

AirAsia broke through the 50 million passenger barrier again in 2016, as demand for its short-haul flights continued to flourish.

The low-cost carrier group boarded a total of 56.59m passengers last year, 12% more than in 2015. This growth rate far exceeded a 4% expansion of seat capacity, which allowed AirAsia’s average load factor to jump six percentage points to a strong 86%. At the end of 2016, the group operated a total of 172 aircraft.

Malaysia AirAsia remains the largest of the group’s subsidiaries, handling 26.41m passengers in 2016, up 9% year-on-year, while Thai AirAsia’s passenger numbers jumped 16% to 17.22m. Indonesia AirAsia’s traffic was flat at 6.52m passengers, and Philippines AirAsia saw a 19% surge in traffic, to 1.04m.

And the youngest of the group’s subsidiaries, AirAsia India, achieved a 68% jump in passenger traffic, to 2.45m. AirAsia Japan, which was supposed to relaunch last year, still hasn’t got off the ground.

AirAsia’s expansion will continue in future; the group still has approximately 400 new aircraft scheduled to be delivered.

Thai AirAsia's first A320neo

Thai AirAsia has taken delivery of a new type of aircraft that will allow it to carry more passengers and reduce its carbon emissions.

The new Airbus A320neo is the latest version of the popular single-aisle aircraft that forms the backbone of the AirAsia fleet. Equipped with new engines and a series of aerodynamic improvements, including the distinctive “Sharklet” wingtips, the A320neo produces approximately 5,000 fewer tons of CO2 emissions per year, with a 15% reduction in fuel burn.

To further increase the efficiency of the aircraft, the A320neo can carry more passengers than the standard A320 – 186 compared to 180. This has been achieved with a reconfiguration of the cabin, allowing an extra row of seats to be added without reducing legroom.

“The technology featured on this aircraft not only reduces its energy consumption but also trim down greenhouse gas emissions by 5,000 tons per year for each aircraft,” said Preechaya Rasametanin, executive vice president of Thai AirAsia. “It also features lower level of noise in its cabin, allowing for a near-silent flight once it reaches cruising altitude.

“When our fleet acquires more A320 neo planes in the future, we will achieve very significant reduction in our energy consumption. This truly asserts our leadership in the area of aviation innovation,” he added.

The new arrival also marks a significant milestone in Thai AirAsia’s history, becoming the low-cost carrier’s 50th aircraft.

In total, the AirAsia group has ordered 300 A320neos and 100 larger A321neos. These stretched aircraft will further boost the LCC’s capacity, handling up to 236 passengers per flight.

King Power, the Thai duty-free giant, has acquired a stake in Thai AirAsia.

The low-cost carrier’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, has sold his 39% stake in the airline’s parent company, Asia Aviation (AAV), to King Power chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and his family. The deal was for a total of 1.89 billion shares priced at THB4.20 per share, valuing the total transaction at THB7.9bn (US$225 million).

As a result of the deal, the Srivaddhanaprabha family will become the largest shareholder in AAV, which owns 55% of Thai AirAsia. Bijleveld will remain the airline’s CEO.

Srivaddhanaprabha said he sees the acquisition as a long-term investment for both himself and his family. He also holds the view that Thai AirAsia and King Power will “greatly complement each other”.

Following the deal, Srivaddhanaprabha’s sons, Aiyawatt and Apichet, along with Sombat Dechapanichkul, have been named as directors of AAV.

AirAsia’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes, said he was encouraged by the deal.

“This investment proves that Thai AirAsia’s value proposition remains undiminished,” Fernandes said. “The vote of confidence that comes from one of the most successful family businesses is fantastic. The potential tie-ups between AirAsia and King Power, Thailand’s sole duty-free operator, are massive and we look forward to working together, not only in Thailand but across the group and ASEAN.”

And Bijleveld remarked that the new investment means that Thai AirAsia can continue moving forward with its expansion plans.

“[Thai AirAsia] will continue to grow and invest as planned for in 2016, accepting delivery of 51 new aircraft which, together with our existing fleet, will fly our estimated 17 million passengers to various destinations across the region,” he stated. “We will also look to further expand our flight network within ASEAN, as well as routes to China and India, and with the support of Mr Vichai’s King Power Group we may well see the company’s growth accelerated beyond what was originally anticipated.”

AirAsia recorded a sharp rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2016.

The group’s short-haul airlines in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and the Philippines carried a combined total of 13.94 million passengers in the first three months of the year, up 17% compared with Q1 2015. This far exceeded the 6% expansion of the group’s seat capacity, allowing its average load factor to surge nine percentage points to 86%.

Much of this growth was driven by AirAsia’s largest unit, in Malaysia. Traffic on the Kuala Lumpur-based low-cost carrier jumped 17% to 6.48m passengers in Q1, while load factors increased 10 points to 85%. Thai AirAsia also performed well, with passenger numbers surging 18% to 4.37m and load factors up five points to a strong 88%.

Despite a 10% reduction in seat capacity, Indonesia AirAsia managed to achieve a 2% rise in passenger traffic, to 1.17m, and a nine-point jump in load factors to 80%. But the Jakarta-based airline’s position as AirAsia’s third largest unit is now under threat from Philippines AirAsia, which increased its passenger numbers by 15% to 967,600 and saw its average load factor jump 10 points to 87%.

Finally in India, AirAsia’s fledgling LCC carried 538,800 passengers and achieved an average load factor of 86%.

AirAsia is planning to launch its sixth short-haul subsidiary this year, with AirAsia Japan expected to commence flights from Nagoya in the coming months. At the end of March 2016, the group’s fleet totalled 170 Airbus A320 aircraft.

Following the recent launch of its first ever flights to Laos, Thai AirAsia has unveiled plans to add a second route to the landlocked Southeast Asian country.

The Bangkok-based low-cost carrier started flying to Luang Prabang on 24 March 2016, and from 1 July it will commence operations to the Lao capital, Vientiane.

Like the Luang Prabang route, the new Vientiane service will operate daily, with flights departing Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at 1205 and arriving at Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport at 1325. The return flight will then take off at 1415 and arrive back in Bangkok at 1535.

And like all Thai AirAsia flights, the new service will be operated using an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

“AirAsia becoming the first low-cost airline to connect Thailand and Lao PDR means easier and more convenient travel for all,” said Santisuk Klongchaiya, the airline’s director of commercial. “We have seen our customer base in the segment expand rapidly, both among tourists and entrepreneurs.

“With Vientiane being the financial centre of Lao PDR and a key destination for trade, we are sure many Thai businesses will see the easier, more cost effective travel to the city as a boon. At the same time, we hope to attract many Laotian travellers to Thailand by offering them a direct route to the kingdom,” he added.

The new route will further expand Thai AirAsia’s international network in Indochina. It currently flies from Bangkok to Yangon, Mandalay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Luang Prabang and now Vientiane.

Thai AirAsia has launched its first ever international flight from southern Thailand’s Hat Yai Airport.

The new service will operate daily between Hat Yai and Johor Bahru, in southern Malaysia. Flights depart the southern Thai city at 1125 and arrive at Johor’s Senai International Airport at 1400. The return service then takes off at 1430 and arrives back in Hat Yai at 1510.

Like all Thai AirAsia flights, it will be operated by an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai AirAsia currently connects Hat Yai with four domestic destinations: Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. But it will continue to expand from the airport later this month, with the launch of flights to Koh Kaen on 28 April. AirAsia’s Malaysian unit also operates flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai.

The arrival of Thai AirAsia also means that three of the group’s airlines now serve Johor Bahru. AirAsia Malaysia connects the city with 11 domestic and international destinations, including Bangkok, while Indonesia AirAsia operates services from Surabaya.

AirAsia is capitalising on the Chinese visitor boom in Chiang Mai with the launch of a new direct service to the northern Thai city from Changsha.

The capital of central China’s Hunan province, Changsha has a population of more than five million people. And they will now be offered daily flights to Chiang Mai with Thai AirAsia’s new direct service.

Changsha becomes the fourth city in Greater China that Thai AirAsia serves direct from Chiang Mai, following Macau, Hong Kong and Hangzhou. The low-cost carrier will become the second airline flying the Chiang Mai-Changsha route, following China Eastern Airlines.

Effective 27 May 2016, the new service will depart Chiang Mai daily at 1815, arriving in Changsha at 2220. The return flight will leave the Chinese city at 2320 and arrive back in northern Thailand at 0115.

The number of direct flights between Chiang Mai and mainland China has surged in recent years; nine airlines now connect the historic northern Thai city with 12 cities in mainland China, and there are also direct flights from Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei.

AirAsia has expanded its presence in China with the launch of one new route to Shantou, in the populous Guangdong province, and the announcement of plans for a second.

The low-cost carrier commenced four weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Shantou last week, with services running every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. And then on 27 May 2016 it will launch a new daily service between Bangkok and Shantou.

This means that AirAsia will offer almost 2,000 weekly seats to and from Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, which serves the cities of Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou. Both the Thai and Malaysian flights will be operated using a 180-seat, all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

“As a group, we have carried over 33 million to and from China over the past 10 years, and we are certain that with the addition of these routes we can push the envelope further to continue to be the largest foreign airlines operating in China by capacity,” said Aireen Omar, AirAsia’s CEO.

AirAsia Malaysia’s Shantou flight will depart KL at 1050 and arrive in southern China at 1510. The return service will then leave at 1555 and arrive back in Malaysia at 2035. Thai AirAsia’s service will leave Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at 0620 and arrive in Shantou at 1030. The inbound flight will then depart at 1115 and arrive back in Bangkok at 1340.

AirAsia will be the first airline providing direct flights on both these routes, although another Southeast Asian LCC, Jetstar, flies direct between Shantou and Singapore.

For AirAsia Malaysia, Shantou becomes its ninth destination in China and its third in Guangdong province after Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Thai AirAsia also flies to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and Shantou will boost its mainland China network to 13 cities.

Thai AirAsia will launch daily direct flights between Bangkok and Kochi from 16 May 2016, marking the first direct connection between the cities.

Flights will depart the Thai capital’s Don Mueang Airport at 2155 and arrive in Kochi at 0045. The return service will then leave the Kerala city at 0130 and arrive back in Bangkok at 0655.

As with all Thai AirAsia flights, the new service will be operated using an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, stated the new route forms part of his airline’s plans to connect to India’s economically important industrial hubs and port towns.

“The AirAsia brand is already familiar to the people of India following the success of our Chennai and Bangalore (Bengaluru) routes, which both saw load factors of 84% in 2015. Opening a direct flight to Kochi was very enticing and we expect to achieve load factors over 85% within the first three months of the route’s operation as well as further growth in the future,” Bijleveld added.

Presently, Thai AirAsia operates five weekly flights direct from Bangkok to Chennai and the same frequency to Bengaluru.

Thai AirAsia is launching two new domestic routes to Khon Kaen, the city in northeast Thailand.

Effective 28 April 2016, the low-cost carrier will offer daily flights to Khon Kaen from Chiang Mai and Hat Yai, the largest cities in northern and southern Thailand. These will run in addition to the airline’s existing four daily flights between Khon Kaen and Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport.

“Khon Kaen is considered the centre of the northeastern region and has much to offer in terms of tourism and convention organisation,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“Thai AirAsia has seen strong feedback for its Don Mueang-Khon Kaen route, which operates four times a day. The province is also surrounded by equally interesting destinations such as Udon Thani, Roi Et, Mahasarakam and Kalasin. The airline is confident its connections from Khon Kaen to both Chiang Mai and Hat Yai will stir interest and demand,” he added.

The Chiang Mai-Khon Kaen route will depart the northern Thai city daily at 0700 and arrive in Khon Kaen at 0810. The return flights will then leave at 1420 and arrive back in Chiang Mai at 1540.

On the Hat Yai route, services will leave Khon Kaen at 0920 and arrive in Hat Yai at 1120. The return flights will then depart the southern city at 1150 and arrive back in Khon Kaen at 1350.

Both routes will be operated using Thai AirAsia’s 180-seat, all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai AirAsia operates flights from six bases in the country: Bangkok (Don Mueang), Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya (U-Tapao) and Hat Yai.

AirAsia's short-haul airlines boarded a total of 50.68 million passengers in 2015

AirAsia has carried 50 million passengers in a single year for the first time in its history.

The group’s portfolio of five short-haul carriers, based in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, boarded a total of 50.68 million passengers in 2015, up 11% from the 45.58m it carried in 2014. Its total seat capacity increased 9% and its average aircraft load factor rose two percentage points to 80%.

Almost half of the total passengers (24.25m) were carried on Malaysia AirAsia’s flights, which marked a 10% year-on-year increase. The Kuala Lumpur-based unit ended the year strongly, launching three new routes in the final quarter, to the Maldives, Changsha and Colombo. The unit’s full-year load factors increased two points to 81%.

In Bangkok, Thai AirAsia’s passenger traffic jumped 22% to 14.85m passengers, while average load factors edged up one percentage point to 81%. The latter stages of the year were marked by a significant expansion from Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport, which included the launch of direct flights to mainland China, Singapore and Macau, along with domestic routes to Udon Thani, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai.

Indonesia AirAsia boarded a total of 6.10m passengers last year, which marked a sharp 17% drop compared to 2014. Load factors also declined four points to 74%. As part of its turnaround plan, the loss-making unit transferred three aircraft to the group’s other carriers – two aircraft to Malaysia and one to India.

Manila-based Philippines AirAsia saw a 19% jump in traffic, to 3.59m passengers, and an 11 point surge in load factors, to 81%. And the group’s youngest unit, AirAsia India, more than quadrupled its passenger numbers to 1.46m. Load factors averaged 81%.

While not all airlines have released their full-year passenger traffic figures, AirAsia’s group total of 50m passengers would make it approximately the fifth largest airline in Asia Pacific, after mainland China’s “big three” carriers and Japan’s ANA.

At the end of 2015, AirAsia operated a fleet of 170 Airbus A320 aircraft, with outstanding orders for a further 300. And the airline will continue to expand in 2016, with plans to relaunch its Japanese low-cost carrier based in Nagoya.

“We especially want to allow Chinese and foreign travellers to conveniently access the eastern region while affording residents of the area new exciting ways to travel with AirAsia.”

By the end of 2015, AirAsia plans to have two A320 aircraft based at U-Tapao Airport. AirAsia’s Malaysian unit also flies direct from Kuala Lumpur to U-Tapao.

Thai AirAsia has unveiled plans to launch two new routes connecting Pattaya with mainland China, as it makes the resort town its fifth operating base in Thailand.

The low-cost carrier will launch flights to Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport from Nanning, the capital of southern China’s Guangxi region, and Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi, on 25 and 26 September respectively.

These flights will primarily serve the needs of Chinese tourists wanting to visit Thailand’s beaches, enabling visitors to fly directly to Pattaya and the eastern seaboard, without having to drive from Bangkok.

“We believe that tourism in the east and Pattaya is growing very rapidly and that U-Tapao Airport is absolutely ready to accommodate regular flights,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“These beliefs led us to creating our latest flight base and we chose the two Chinese cities of Nanchang and Nanning as its first routes. With plans to expand to other routes both domestic and international we have targeted acquiring two Airbus A320s for a fleet at U-Tapao,” he added.

The flights from Nanning will operate four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays), while the Nanchang service will run on the remaining three days of the week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays).

U-Tapao Airport, the former military base, becomes Thai AirAsia’s fifth base in the country, following Bangkok Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Krabi.

AirAsia’s Malaysian unit recently launched flights from Kuala Lumpur to U-Tapao, while Bangkok Airways and Kan Air also operate domestic flights from the Pattaya hub.

AirAsia has signed an agreement that will lead to the training of more Thai pilots.

The low-cost carrier’s Bangkok-based subsidiary, Thai AirAsia, has joined forces with the Bangkok Aviation Center (BAC) with a mission to train new pilots at a targeted rate of 70 per year. This is in line with the airline’s expansion plans, which will see it add five new Airbus A320 aircraft each year.

“Thai AirAsia currently has 450 pilots, comprising 206 captains and 244 first officers. Up to 40% of the airline’s pilots are BAC graduates, making the company a main driver behind Thai AirAsia’s success over the past 11 years,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“With today’s Memorandum of Understanding signing, we aim to have BAC produce us 70-80 commercial licensed pilots each year to keep up with our growth by five airplanes every year.”

Founded in 2002, BAC was Thailand’s first private aviation school and is now able to produce 180 pilots a year.

Thai AirAsia experienced a sharp rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2015.

The Bangkok-based low-cost carrier handled 3.7 million passengers in the three-month period, 19% more than in Q1 2014. The airline also managed to increase its aircraft load factors by three percentage points to 83%.

Thai AirAsia added three domestic routes in Q1, connecting Bangkok with Nan, Loei and Roi Et, and increased the frequency of its services to Phnom Penh, Nakhon Phanom and Phuket. This growth was driven by the arrival of two more 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft, which increased the airline’s total fleet to 42 aircraft.

“Our performance in Q1 2015 serves as an affirmation that the overall growth of Thailand’s tourism sector… [following the] political situation of 2014. Nonetheless, we will continue to work diligently, effectively manage our capital and seek out new business opportunities to achieve strong performance returns in the remaining quarters of this year,” said Thai AirAsia’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld.

The airline generated net profits of THB506m (US$15m) in the first quarter of 2015, with revenues totalling THB7.73 billion.

Thai AirAsia plans to add five new aircraft in 2015

Thai AirAsia has assured its investors that it is on track to meet its 2015 targets, following recent setbacks in the Thai aviation sector.

The company held an open meeting at the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 21 April 2015, where it told stakeholders that it would be able to operate all its fights as scheduled, despite the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) recent audit of Thailand’s Department of Civil Aviation.

Thai AirAsia plans to add five new aircraft in 2015
Thai AirAsia plans to add five new aircraft in 2015

It reiterated that it would continue with its previously set targets of acquiring five new aircraft in 2015, adding three or four new routes, and carrying 14.5 million passengers.

“The situation will not impact Thai AirAsia’s expansion plans in the latter half of the year,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We continue to be able to operate all of our flights as scheduled and our plans to add three-to-four new routes during the second half of the year have not been impeded as the countries we have targeted are Nepal, India, Laos, the Philippines and Indonesia, which are not affected by the ICAO’s announcement.

“Pertaining to our plan to add a new route to China in October, if the Department of Civil Aviation [of] Thailand is able to complete its revisions by July, the plan should not be impacted. Regardless, if the department is not able to achieve its revisions by that time, we have already begun seeking out alternatives,” he added.

Late last month, ICAO said it discovered a “significant safety concern” during its audit of Thailand’s Department of Civil Aviation, which led to China, Japan and South Korea limiting the launch of new routes to their countries by Thai carriers.

Thai AirAsia X is planning to commence flights to Sapporo in May, and Tassapon said that this route “will be able to operate”.

“Negotiations [are] already ongoing with the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau as to the future of the route,” he added.
Thai AirAsia X’s other routes from Bangkok to Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul remain unaffected.

The new service will operate daily, direct from Bangkok‘s Don Mueang Airport. The 55-minute flights will leave Bangkok at 1225, while the return service will depart Buriram at 1405. As with all Thai AirAsia flights, the Buriram service will be operated using an all-economy, 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

“We believe that the addition will offer new experiences as well as travel options to the people of Buriram as well as are confident that the province is a distinct destination for tourism both in terms of its history and its present status as a centre for sports and athletics,” said Witchunee Kuntapeng, head of customer experience for Thai AirAsia.

“The launching of this new flight route is sure to promote tourism to the province.”

The airline has also teamed up with local football team Buriram United, to offer 50% off match tickets for AirAsia boarding pass holders.

Buriram becomes the fourth new domestic destination of the year for Thai AirAsia, following the triple launch of flights to Nan, Loei and Roi Et in February.

The group, comprising the short-haul low-cost carriers in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, carried a combined total of 45.68 million passengers last year, 7% more than in 2013.

But this growth was driven mostly by Thai AirAsia. The Bangkok-based LCC experienced a 16% jump in  traffic last year, to 12.21m passengers. The group’s largest unit, Malaysia AirAsia, experienced a 1% rise in traffic to 22.14m passengers, while Indonesia AirAsia’s traffic remained flat at 7.85m.

The smaller Manila-based unit, Philippines AirAsia, rose 36% to 3.03m passengers, while no comparative results were available for AirAsia India, carried 345,300 passengers since its commenced operations in June 2014.

AirAsia added 18 new Airbus A320 aircraft in 2014, boosting its capacity by more than 3,200 seats. Of this total, nine new aircraft were delivered to Malaysia AirAsia, five to Thai AirAsia and three to AirAsia India. The group now operates a fleet of 172 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai AirAsia X has launched a new booking option that allows passengers to purchase flights over the counter at 7 Eleven stores.

Launched in partnership with Counter Service, the new ‘Book & Pay’ service will offer Thai AirAsia X passengers the chance to make flight reservations and book ancillary services at more than 9,900 outlets across Thailand, including 7 Elevens.

“The Book & Pay process for Thai AirAsia X flights to Japan and South Korea is simple. Start by informing the attendant you wish to book a flight, fill out the travel information, select a route and flight and upon payment receive a receipt that can be used as an e-ticket. To further provide confidence, an SMS is sent to re-confirm the booking. Up to four people can purchase tickets with a single booking code,” explained Weeradej Ackapopanich, assistant vice president of Counter Service.

The service is now available for Thai AirAsia X’s flights to Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul, and includes the option of buying flight tickets, extra baggage and in-flight meals.

This marks an extension of the service introduced for Thai AirAsia‘s domestic and short-haul international flights in early 2014.

AirAsia has abolished fuel surcharges across all of its routes, including long-haul services with AirAsia X.

The low-cost carrier said that, effective immediately, none of its subsidiaries will apply the tax to any domestic or international flight ticket.

“We are a high-value, low-fare airline and we will continue to strive to make flying as affordable as possible,” said AirAsia’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes.

“This decision has been made in November 2014, which was in line with declining global oil prices. However, we are only able to implement it now, but we believe removing fuel surcharge and reducing travel costs will be a huge boost to the tourism industry. This will be a plus point for consumers, but the economy will also benefit from this as the tourism industry is a great job creator.”

AirAsia said the abolition of fuel surcharges will “stimulate more demand for travel and tourism”. It became the first airline to abolish fuel surcharges for all its flights back in 2008, but rising fuel prices forced the fees’ re-introduce in 2011.

The move, which was implemented on 26 January 2015, will now apply to Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia India, AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia Extra. AirAsia Philippines, along with all carriers in the Philippines, removed fuel surcharges earlier this year following a government directive.

Crude oil prices halved by the end of 2014 and have fallen a further 17% in January 2015.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said the new routes form part of his airline’s plan to offer “full penetration of the [Thai] domestic market”.

AirAsia has received stellar support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and many other agencies towards the launch of these three routes in the north and northeast,” said Tassapon.

“[We believe] they will create new opportunities for travellers as well for investment. Having all three flights… available twice a day in the morning and evening will facilitate the business segment.”

The three new routes will continue the domestic growth implemented by Thai AirAsia in 2014, including new Bangkok-Sakon Nakhon and Chiang Mai-Surat Thani routes.

The airline’s 2015 expansion will be driven by the addition of two more A320 aircraft, which are expected to join the Thai AirAsia fleet in January 2015.

Flights will now operate daily using a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft, and passengers will be able to buy tickets to Samui, and other islands such as Koh Phangan, using AirAsia’s Island Transfer service. The low-cost carrier reported that the inaugural flight was 90% full.

“Over the past two years, AirAsia has been continually adding regionally connecting flights with an aim to create a network, especially between the north and south,” said Santisuk Klongchaiya, Thai AirAsia’s director of commercial.

“The inaugural Chiang Mai-Surat Thani flight served a load factor of over 90%. The very welcome figure included both local and foreign passengers with an interest in travelling Surat Thani and its islands, especially Samui.

“Our bookings until the end of the year remain high and we believe Chiang Mai, Surat Thani and their neighbouring provinces will be vibrant this holiday season” Santisuk added.

The new service adds to Thai AirAsia’s existing 12 daily flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and five from Bangkok to Surat Thani.

AirAsia will provide a new Chinese connection for the Thai resort province of Krabi, with the launch of direct flights from Guangzhou.

Commencing on 6 November 2014, the new Krabi-Guangzhou route will be operated daily using a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. Flights will depart the southern Chinese city every day at 2045, arriving in Krabi at 0130 the next morning. The return service will then leave at 0220, getting back into Guangzhou at 0450.

“China is an important market for AirAsia,” stated Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia. “Load factor from the country in the first eight months of 2014 averaged 80%. We plan to step up market stimulation during the third and fourth quarters to attract travellers during the year-end holiday season, which will also see a visa waiver for Chinese travellers.

“We are confident our load factor during the end of the year will reach even higher and that our new route addition, between an economic centre in China and Thailand’s south, will stimulate circulation,” he added.

The link between to Guangzhou marks the latest stage of Thai AirAsia’s expansion at Krabi. Earlier this year the low-cost carrier launched its first international flights from the beach resort, connecting to Singapore. It also flies to Krabi from Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

In terms of the Chinese market, Thai AirAsia operates 13 routes to 10 destinations, including Macau and Hong.

AirAsia continued to experience rising passenger traffic in the second quarter of the year.

The low-cost carrier group boarded 11.3 million passengers in the three-month period, up 13% compared to the 10.0m it carried in the same period last year. The airline has added 45 new aircraft to its fleet in the past 12 months, boosting its capacity by 15%. Group-wide average load factors dipped slightly to 79%.

Malaysia AirAsia remained the group’s biggest unit in Q2 2014, carrying 5.6m passengers, up 1% year-on-year, with loads of 80%. But Thai AirAsia continued to drive traffic growth, with passenger numbers surging 16% in the quarter to 2.8m. Load factors fell to 78% however, as demand failed to match the growth in capacity.

Indonesia AirAsia carried 2.0m passengers in Q2 2014, up 3% year-on-year, while Philippines AirAsia carried 924,200 passengers with load factors of 77%.

At the end of the second quarter on 30 June 2014, AirAsia’s total fleet stood at 166 aircraft – up from 121 at the same time in 2013. Of these, 80 are based in Malaysia, 37 in Thailand, 30 in Indonesia and 19 in the Philippines.

The start-up AirAsia India was not included in the quarterly results.

AirAsia experienced a strong rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of the year, as new aircraft deliveries helped boost seat capacity.

The group, comprising units in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, carried a total of 11.48 million passengers in Q1 2014, 17% more than the same period last year.

And this growth was driven by the arrival of 35 new aircraft in the previous 12 months, which allowed AirAsia to increase its seat capacity by 19%. The group’s load factor averaged 78% – one percentage point lower than in Q1 2013, and AirAsia’s total fleet comprised 157 aircraft at the end of Q1.

AirAsia’s fleet size, by region

Malaysia: 72 aircraft
Thailand: 37
Indonesia: 30
Philippines: 18

Despite Bangkok’s problems, Thai AirAsia experienced a strong rise in traffic in the first quarter of 2014. The airline carried 3.12m passengers in the three-month period, up 22% year-on-year. Average load factors did suffer however, dropping to 80% following the arriving of nine new aircraft, which added 31% more seat capacity.

Indonesian AirAsia also performed well, with traffic rising 22% to 2.10m passengers and average load factors rising to 76%. The Jakarta-based unit has taken delivery of eight new aircraft in the past 12 months.

Malaysian AirAsia carried 5.37m passengers in Q1 2014, up 4% year-on-year, with load factors rising to 81%. Finally Philippines AirAsia saw a sharp rising in traffic, albeit from a low base. The unit carried 894,700 passengers in Q1 2014, compared to 144,200 in the same period last year, as its fleet size climbed from two to 18 aircraft.

And the group’s growth will continue this year, with the launch of AirAsia India.

AirAsia X has launched a new regional subsidiary in Thailand.

The new long-haul low-cost carrier was officially unveiled at an event in Bangkok on Tuesday (22 April 2014), with CEO Nadda Buranasiri announcing the airline’s first routes and in-flight products.

Operating from its home base at Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport, Thai AirAsia X will start flying on 17 June 2014 with daily services to Seoul. It will then expand its operations with flights to the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Osaka commencing later in the year.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be Thailand’s first low-cost long-haul carrier,” said Nadda. “While Thai AirAsia’s Airbus A320 planes continue to offer the best connectivity for short-haul destinations, Thai AirAsia X will be operating Airbus A330-300 wide-body aircraft to destinations that are further than a four-hour flight time from Bangkok.”

Speaking to Travel Daily, Nadda revealed that future destinations could include Australia and China, as long as the flight times fitted in with the airline’s strategy.

Thai AirAsia X will operate a fleet of Airbus A330-300s

“We know that Thailand is a preferred destination for Australians,” Nadda told Travel Daily at a media briefing. “We would [also] consider Chinese destinations over four hours in length.”

Thai AirAsia has already established a strong presence in China, with flights to nine mainland cities. And while Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, confirmed that “Thai AirAsia X will not take over any routes from Thai AirAsia”, the new airline’s four-to-nine-hour flight times could open up such destinations as Beijing.

Thai AirAsia X will also be looking to use Thai AirAsia’s network of short-haul routes to offer a greater range of destinations for its passengers. For example, passengers on inbound flights from Seoul, Tokyo and Osaka will be able to connect to a range of Thai domestic destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai, or regional hubs like Siem Reap and Yangon, via Bangkok.

In terms of aircraft, Thai AirAsia X will initially operate two Airbus A330-300 aircraft, each offering 377 seats – 12 in business class and 365 in economy. These planes will come equipped with flat-bed seats for premium passengers and special ‘quiet zones’. Asked what fleet expansion plans Thai AirAsia X has, Nadda told Travel Daily that any new aircraft deliveries would “depend on demand”.

Thai AirAsia X received its Air Operator’s Certificate late last year, but delayed its launch – initially planned for February 2014 – due to the impact of Bangkok’s political protests on the country’s travel industry. But Nadda said he remained confident the airline would record load factors of up to 80% on both its new routes.

The CEO also predicted that traffic on both Korean and Japanese services would be a 50-50 mix between Thai and international. The destinations were selected in part due to the fact that South Korea and Japan both offer visa-free travel for Thai nationals.

Thai AirAsia X becomes the seventh branch of the AirAsia group, following AirAsia Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and India, and AirAsia X in Malaysia.

AirAsia achieved strong growth in passenger traffic last year, as new aircraft deliveries boosted demand.

The low-cost carrier group carried 42.6 million passengers in 2013, 25% more than the 34.1m it recorded in the previous year. And this growth was largely in line with the growth of AirAsia’s available seat capacity.

The airline added 39 new Airbus A320 aircraft last year, expanding its total fleet size to 154 aircraft, and boosting its seat capacity by 26%. Average cabin load factors remained static at 79%.

By region, Malaysia AirAsia remains the group’s biggest unit, carrying 21.9m passengers in 2013 – up 11% year-on-year. This was helped by the launch of extra flights from Kuala Lumpur to several international destinations, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Nanning and Vientiane, and the launch if a new route between Kota Kinabalu and Kota Bharu.

Thai AirAsia carried 10.5m passengers last year, 26% more than 2012, and recently launched new routes from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Khon Kaen, Kunming and Phitsanulok, and from Krabi to Singapore and Chiang Mai.

AirAsia’s Indonesian unit continued its strong growth last year, with passenger traffic rising 34% to 7.9m and its fleet size expanding to 30 aircraft by the end of the year.

Finally AirAsia Philippines experienced a surge in traffic in 2013, carrying 2.2m passengers with a fleet of 17 aircraft. This compares to just 311,000 passengers with two aircraft in 2012.

AirAsia ceased operating its Japanese carrier in September last year however, following the end of its agreement with ANA. And this year, the group plans to launch a new India-based LCC, based in Chennai.

And with outstanding orders for more than 280 more A320 aircraft, AirAsia has the scope to grow considerably in the years ahead.

Thai AirAsia has unveiled a new service to China, plus additional flights on two other international routes.

Commencing on 21 February 2014, the low-cost carrier will launch the first ever direct flights between Chiang Mai and Hangzhou, in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. As well as being the only direct flight between the two cities, it will also become the airline’s first connection between Chiang Mai and mainland China. Thai AirAsia currently flies from northern Thai city to both Macau and Hong Kong.

For Chiang Mai, it marks the latest in a series of new connections to China, with Air China recently launching flights to the city direct from Beijing.

Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia has also announced plans to add more services on its Bangkok-Yangon and Bangkok-Siem Reap routes.

From 24 January 2014, the airline will operate four daily flights to Myanmar’s largest city (a rise of three per week). And then on 27 January, it will expand its Siem Reap service to twice daily (up from 10 per week). Both routes operate direct from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport.

All of Thai AirAsia’s flights are operated using 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai AirAsia is continuing its rapid expansion into China, with the launch of a new service to the city of Changsha.

Commencing on 24 January 2014, the low-cost carrier will operate daily flights from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport to Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. Flights will depart Bangkok at 0735, arriving in Changsha’s Huanghua International Airport at 1205. The return service will leave the Chinese city at 1255, getting back in Don Mueang at 1535.

As with all Thai AirAsia’s flights, it will be operated using a 180-seat, all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

“Changsha… was chosen due to its business and tourism capabilities, which have been consistently growing,” explained Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We are convinced that with Changsha’s potential and AirAsia’s low fare daily flights, departing from Bangkok early in the morning, travellers will receive the utmost in both value and convenience.”

Changsha, which is famous for being one of the birthplaces of China’s communist movement, becomes Thai AirAsia’s ninth destination in China, following Macau, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xi’an and Kunming.

Passengers will now be able to travel to Pai and Sukhothai on a single ticket combining air tickets and private bus transfers. The Pai shuttle bus will operate from Chiang Mai, while the Sukhothai services will operate from AirAsia’s newest destination, Phitsanulok.

AirAsia has posted an increase in profits for the third quarter of the year, driven by its fleet expansion and surging passenger traffic.

Releasing its results this week, the low-cost airline group revealed that both revenues and operating profits climbed 3% in the three months to 30 September 2013, driven by a 27% jump in traffic, to 10.6 million passengers.

There were considerable differences however, in the fortunes of its regional units. Malaysian AirAsia (MAA) experienced a solid quarter, with revenues rising 3% to MYR1.28 billion (US$402.1m) and operating profits up 5% to MYR291.1m. Malaysian traffic climbed 11% to 5.3m passengers.

But the outstanding performer was Thai AirAsia (TAA), which experienced a 26% jump in revenue, to THB5.60bn (US$176.6m), and an impressive 64% surge in operating profits, to THB377.6m. The Bangkok-based subsidiary carried 2.6m passengers in the quarter – 30% more than the same period in 2012.

Indonesia AirAsia (IAA) however, suffered an 18% drop in operating profit in Q3 2013, to IDR113.57bn (US$9.7m), which AirAsia attributed to the weakness of the Indonesian rupiah pushing up costs. Without the revaluation of the currency, AirAsia said the Jakarta-based airline’s operating profit would have increased 40%. Indonesia AirAsia carried 2.1m passengers in the quarter, 36% up year-on-year, while revenues jumped 35% to IDR1.62 trillion.

No figures were made available for the company’s recently rebranded Philippine carrier, AirAsia Zest.

Commenting on the outlook for the remainder of the year, AirAsia’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes, said he was focused on improving load factors, reducing costs and increasing ancillary revenues.

“The outlook for 4Q13 is strong as our load active yield passive strategy will start to bear fruit. We forecast a record quarter in terms of load factor for MAA as seasonally it is our strongest quarter. As for TAA, it prepares itself with the arrival of Thai AirAsia X in 1Q14 that will definitely add growth to an already booming short-haul business out of [Bangkok] Don Mueang [Airport],” Fernandes said.

He added that he remains “upbeat” about the prospects for IAA.

AirAsia now operates a fleet of 137 aircraft, 32 more than this time last year. Of this fleet, 66 aircraft are based in Malaysia, 31 in Thailand, 26 in Indonesia and 14 in the Philippines.

AirAsia experienced a strong increase in passenger traffic in the third quarter of the year.

The budget airline group carried 10.6 million passengers in the three months to 30 September 2013, 27% more than the same period last year.

This growth was driven by the addition of new aircraft; AirAsia has added 32 more aircraft in the past 12 months, taking its total fleet size to 137 aircraft. The group’s average load factor dipped two percentage points to 76%.

AirAsia’s Malaysian unit continued to carry the most passengers, with 5.3m people boarding the Kuala Lumpur-based airline’s flights in the quarter, 11% up year-on-year. Thai AirAsia’s traffic jumped 30% to 2.6m passengers, while Indonesia AirAsia saw a 36% increase, to 2.1m.

The new Manila-based subsidiary, Philippines AirAsia, saw a 525% surge in traffic, to 730,000 passengers, but AirAsia Japan ceased operating.

AirAsia has made it easier for passengers to connect between flights in Bangkok, with the launch of its ‘Fly-Thru’ service.

Passengers connecting from one AirAsia flight to another at the Thai capital’s Don Mueang International Airport can now transfer between aircraft without needing to check-in twice. Passengers’ baggage will also be checked through to the final destination, and passengers will be exempt from Don Mueang’s airport tax. The service will initially be available for 34 routes.

“We are very pleased to offer more convenience to our passengers who can now easily transit… via Bangkok,” said Santisuk Klongchaiya, Thai AirAsia’s director of commercial.

“The Fly-Thru service will benefit leisure travellers, business travellers, and also those who live in other cities in Thailand. Leisure travellers include passengers from China to Thailand’s beach destinations such as Krabi and Phuket while business travellers may find the Yangon-Siem Reap or Yangon-Ho Chi Minh City route a convenient option. From Thailand, people who are living in Krabi, Chiang Mai or Phuket will be able to conveniently reach international destinations with ease.”

The service is available for connecting flights not more than six hours apart. This will mean passengers from major cities such as Guangzhou, Kolkata, Chennai, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Wuhan, Shenzhen and Ho Chi Minh City will be able to connect via Bangkok to destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai. It will also offer international connections including Singapore-Siem Reap, Singapore-Chongqing, Yangon-Ho Chi Minh City, Yangon-Siem Reap and Kolkata-Macau.

Transit passengers at Don Mueang will be able to wait in a new area on the second floor of the airport. International passengers transiting to a domestic destination in Thailand will still be required to go through immigration upon arrival in Bangkok, as it is their first port of entry into the country.

The launch of Fly Thru in Bangkok follows an existing service for AirAsia’s passengers transiting in Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia is increasing the number of connections it offers to Krabi, with new routes from Chiang Mai and Singapore and extra flights from Bangkok.

Commencing on 25 November 2013, the low-cost carrier will offer daily flights between Singapore and Krabi, with daily services from Chiang Mai launching the following month, on 15 December 2013. The frequency of flights from Bangkok will increase to eight times a day from 25 November.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said his airline was mounting the extra flights to cater for strong passenger demand. He noted that the Bangkok-Krabi frequency had been increased several times in the past, but was still yet to match demand.

“We believe that connecting Krabi to a variety of other destinations will provide travellers with more convenience and will thus be introducing Krabi-Singapore this 25 November 2013 and Krabi-Chiang Mai this 15 December 2013,” Bijleveld said.

The additions will give AirAsia the highest capacity of any airline at Krabi International Airport, with 84 weekly flights from four cities – Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai and Singapore.

Krabi province is home to some of Thailand’s most popular and iconic beach destinations, including Railay Bay and Phi Phi Island.

The Thai government has officially approved the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) for Thai AirAsia X, the new Bangkok-based long-haul low-cost carrier.

The decision means that Thai AirAsia X is now expected to receive its AOC before the end of the year, bringing forward the launch date of its first flight into 2013, rather than Q1 2014.

The new Thai carrier was first announced this summer and will initially operate using a fleet of two Airbus A330-300 aircraft, featuring approximately 370 seats. Unlike Thai AirAsia’s short-haul operations, AirAsia X will offer a business class cabin with flat-bed seats and complimentary in-flight meals. Passengers in the economy class cabin will still be able to pay for hot and cold snacks.

The new carrier will be based at Bangkok’s second airport, Don Mueang, and plans to operate medium- and long-haul flights to destinations including Japan, China, South Korea and Australia.

“With its 10-year track record, Thai AirAsia has built a strong domestic and international short-haul network that can provide feeder traffic to Thai AirAsia X, which plans to be based in the same Don Muang Airport,” said Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X.

“Thai AirAsia X will also focus on flying to long-haul destinations in North Asia and Australia where AirAsia X has already built up brand awareness and operating bases, to speed up its market penetration. Passenger traffic from destinations in these markets to Bangkok is very high, largely leisure travellers, and primarily served by higher-cost full service airlines. Thai AirAsia X expects to significantly grow tourist arrivals to Thailand,” he added.

The Thai venture marks the first overseas subsidiary for AirAsia X, which currently operates flights from Kuala Lumpur. Following the cessation of its unsuccessful services to Europe, the carrier has more recently concentrated on regional routes in Asia Pacific, and recently announced plans to relaunch flights to India.

The new two-pronged Thai venture would put AirAsia in further direct competition with Thai Airways, which recently set up regional low-cost subsidiary, Thai Smile, in part to combat the threat of Thai AirAsia.

AirAsia saw a strong rise in traffic in the second quarter of 2013, as new aircraft deliveries allowed it to add new flights.

The low-cost carrier’s four regional subsidiaries (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines) carried a combined total of 9.99 million passengers in April-June 2013, 20% more than the same period last year. This was driven by an 18% expansion of seat capacity, as the grouip’s fleet grew from 102 to 121 aircraft. The group’s average load factor also increased, from 79% to 80%.

The group’s main Malaysian unit carried 5.51m passengers during the quarter, 12% up year-on-year. This result was in line with a 12% expansion of capacity, causing load factors to remain unchanged at 80%. Thai AirAsia saw traffic surged 25% to 2.42m passengers, ahead of a 20% rise in capacity. This allowed load factors to climb three percentage points to 82%. Meanwhile, AirAsia Indonesia’s passenger traffic jumped 33%, on account of a 32% rise in capacity. Load factors increased to 79%.

During the quarter, three new routes were opened, Medan–Jakarta, Surabaya–Singapore and Jakarta–Johor Bahru, while extra frequencies were added on several existing routes, including those to and from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Bintulu, Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia, Tiruchirappalli in India, Lombok, Pekanbaru, Surabaya, Jakarta and Makassar in Indonesia, Hong Kong and Wuhan in China and Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand.

The group’s 18-month-old Clark-based carrier, AirAsia Philippines, carried 140,000 passengers with load factors of 74%. AirAsia Japan’s figures were excluded from the group result, following the termination of the joint venture with ANA.

AirAsia will become the first low-cost carrier to operate flights between Bangkok and Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat.

From 1 October 2013, the airline’s Thai subsidiary will launch daily flights on the route, using its 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. This will add 1,260 weekly seats between Bangkok and Siem Reap, providing more competition on the route that for many years was operated solely by Bangkok Airways.

“This year, AirAsia is focusing on the Indochina market as it heads toward the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We’ve been on the lookout for new routes and saw Siem Reap as a destination that would enhance our network. The city will be the sixth stop in Indochina for us once it begins on 1 October 2013, following after Yangon, Mandalay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Phnom Penh,” he added.

Thai AirAsia currently operates 70 weekly flights in the Indochina region, out of its total 250 weekly flights. And Tassapon said the airline is planning to “add even more destinations in the Indochina region” later this year.

The new flights will depart Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport at 1030 and arrive in Siem Reap an hour later, at 1130. The return leg departs at 1215, getting back into Bangkok at 1315.

Along with Thai AirAsia and Bangkok Airways, Cambodia Angkor Air also operates the Bangkok-Siem Reap route.

With the 27th SEA Games approaching in December 2013, Myanmar’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2014 and the ASEAN Economic Community taking place in 2015, there will be tremendous demand to connect the capital city to the rest of the world, and Bangkok is a perfect place to start,” Fernandes added.

Thai AirAsia currently offers three daily flights between Bangkok and Yangon, and one daily flight between Bangkok and Mandalay. The low-cost airline group’s Malaysian unit also offers daily services from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon.

AirAsia has reported a strong set of financial results for the first quarter of 2013, boosted by its Thai and Indonesian subsidiaries.

Indonesia AirAsia achieved a 104% jump in operating profits during the three-month period, to IDR41.97 billion (US$4.3m), following a 34% rise in revenues, to IDR1.22 trillion. AirAsia’s Indonesian passenger traffic climbed 35% to 1.72m. Thai AirAsia meanwhile, saw its operating profits surge 48% to THB931.9 (US$31.2m), on a 24% rise in revenues, to THB6.03bn. The airline carried 2.56m passengers in the quarter, up 20% compared to Q1 2012.

AirAsia Bhd, the original Malaysia-based low-cost carrier, saw operating profits climb 6% to MYR254.9m (US$84.3m) and revenues rise 11% to MYR1.3bn. Passenger traffic climbed 7% to 5.17m.

“It has been a good start for 2013,” said AirAsia’s Group CEO, Tony Fernandes. “There was a big structural change in 2012 with the set-up of regional functions which was necessary as the group gets bigger. Now, everything is pretty much in place and everyone is in full-gear mode to take on the second decade head on. 2013 is the start of new era for the AirAsia Group.”

The low-cost carrier group also operates Philippines AirAsia, which currently has a fleet of two aircraft, and AirAsia Japan with four jets. It is also planning to launch a new Indian subsidiary later this year.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport has seen a severe drop in passenger traffic this year, following AirAsia’s move to the Thai capital’s second airport, Don Mueang.

According to the latest data from Airports of Thailand (AoT), Suvarnabhumi recorded 8.8 million passenger movements in the first two months of 2013, down 9.8% year-on-year. Aircraft movements plunged 20.5% to 47,558.

The impact of AirAsia’s departure, along with the move of Nok Air’s flights back to Don Mueang after the 2011-12 floods, was highlighted by a 46.8% slump in domestic traffic to 1.6m passengers. International traffic climbed 6.4% to 7.2m.

By contrast, traffic at Don Mueang jumped to 2.6m passengers, while aircraft movements reached 22,920. The airport was closed in the first two months of 2012 due to the affects of the Bangkok floods, but is now home to Thailand’s two biggest low-cost carriers – Thai AirAsia and Nok Air.

Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport reopened yesterday, with AirAsia its anchor client.

In a ceremony complete with pop music, clowns on stilts and a fashion show, the airport’s relaunch was in stark contrast to the images that hit the press this time last year, when severe floods inundated the hub, forcing its closure.

But following a major development and modernisation effort, Don Mueang has been reborn as a new key airport for Bangkok, offering domestic and international flights from AirAsia and Thai Airways’ low-cost carrier, Nok Air.

Tax refund, duty-free and visa-on-arrival services will all be available. There will be 34 immigration counters dealing with departures and 26 for arrivals. There will also be a free shuttle bus linking Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports, operating between 5am and 11pm.

“Less congestion and shorter taxi time will result in less fuel consumption and less delays. For our passengers, they will be able to enjoy Don Mueang’s close proximity to the city and less time for the entire travel process. At Don Mueang, it only takes 30 minutes from check-in to the boarding gate and passengers will benefit from this hassle-free experience,” said Thai AirAsia’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld.

The opening marks the start of a busy week and final quarter for Thai AirAsia. On Thursday it sees services to Yangon increase to three times a day and the start of four weekly services to Mandalay. Later in the month sees the commencement of daily flights to Wuhan, while services to Xi’an begin on 16 November. And Bijleveld told reporters that China represented a key part of the airline’s expansion strategy, with “three to four” more Chinese destinations expected to be added next year.

“We are going to give a lot of importance to China,” he said via an interpreter.

This is woven into Thai Air Asia’s plan to expand its fleet and route map. Currently 25 strong, Thai AirAsia’s fleet will rise to 27 by the end of the year. During 2013, according to Bijleveld, it will add for or five more and by the end of 2016 its aim is to have 48 Airbus A320 aircraft.

AirAsia… has thus devoted importance to providing flights into Myanmar to foster its future,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“Providing four flights a week to Mandalay has brought us great pride and we are confident it will become a popular destination in no time.  Mandalay is home to many enticing tourist destinations and is a monument to faith in Buddhism that must be appreciated” he added.

All services to both Yangon and Mandalay will be operated using a single-class, 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

AirAsia has confirmed that it will transfer all Bangkok operations to the city’s Don Mueang International Airport by 1 October 2012.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said that the decision to move from the overcrowded Suvarnabhumi airport to the smaller Don Mueang was taken “in line with AirAsia’s own growth plan”, and would enable the airline to “manage its cost more effectively and provide passengers with improved service”.

“The uncongested Don Mueang airport is sure to prove a benefit to AirAsia when it boosts its fleet of Airbus A320s to a total of 48 and welcomes more customers,” Bijleveld said. “The airport’s location also makes it conducive to further travel. Prospective travelers should have confidence in what Don Mueang has to offer.”

Don Mueang, located in the north of Bangkok, was Thailand’s main gateway airport until Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006. Since then, passenger traffic has shrunk from more than 38 million passengers per year to fewer than three million. By contrast, Suvarnabhumi has expanded faster than expected, and less than six years after it opened it is already operating over its 45 million annual passenger capacity.

The Thai government has approved a scheme to redevelop Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport and use it as a base for more domestic and low-cost flights.

The scheme, proposed by Airports of Thailand (AoT), is designed to relieve pressure on the Thai capital’s main airport, Suvarnabhumi, which is currently undergoing runway repair work.

Under the plan, which was rubber-stamped on Wednesday, Don Mueang will now undergo a THB1.6 billion (US$50.9m) development project, upgrading runways and other facilities. Once this is complete, the airport will handle an increasing number of domestic and low-cost airlines. The northern Bangkok airport is already home to domestic LCC Nok Air, and Thai AirAsia has been attempting to convince AoT to give it a dedicated terminal at Don Meuang.

Suvarnabhumi will remain the city’s main airport for international flights throughout the runway repairs.

Don Mueang served as Bangkok’s main airport until 2006, handling up to 38 million passengers per year. This dwindled to around two million however, following the opening of Suvarnabhumi in September 2006. In the six years since its opening however, Suvarnabhumi has already outgrown itself. The hub handled almost 48 million passengers in 2011 – about four million more than its planned capacity. Late last year AoT announced plans to speed up the second phase of Suvarnabhumi’s development, taking capacity to 65 million passengers per year by 2016.

Meanwhile, an AoT official was reported by MCOT as saying yesterday that the ongoing runway repairs at Suvarnabhumi caused the delay 104 flights – almost 13% of the airport’s total daily traffic.

Thai AirAsia’s initial public offering (IPO) got underway today (23 May).

The airline’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, said the company plans to use part of the IPO proceeds to double its fleet of Airbus A320s to 48 aircraft within the next five years. The remainder of the IPO proceeds will be used for the purchase of newly-issued shares and to boost the airline’s working capital.

“Thai AirAsia aims to be the low-cost airline with the largest market share. Our strength is our cost control, which makes us the airline with the lowest operating cost while the service quality remains intact,” said Bijleveld.

“Today, we are ready to offer our shares to the public and will be listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This is another crucial step that will stabilise Thai AirAsia’s financial status and allow the company to march forward to its planned goal. We aim to grow at least 20-25% from 2011, which will be supported by our new fleet, new route plans and flight frequency increase on potential routes,” he added.

Ms Suvabha Charoenying, Managing Director of Thanachart Securities, the deal’s financial advisor, revealed that the IPO has already drawn a strong response from local and overseas investors.

“The IPO price of THB3.70 per share is appropriate. The demand following the book-building among the institutional investors in local and overseas markets was 10 times oversubscribed. This reflects their strong interest,” Ms Suvabha said.

Of the 1,212.5 million shares offered, 750 million are new shares and 462.5 million shares are from existing shareholders. The subscription period for the IPO is 23-25 May 2012.

Bangkok second airport, Don Mueang has resumed flight operations four months after it was forced to close due to severe flooding.

The hub, in northern Bangkok, will reopen today following a ceremony presided over by Thailand’s Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra. More than THB1.5 billion (US$48.2 million) has been invested in repairing the airport since it closed on 26 October 2011, when images of aircraft stranded in floodwaters made headlines around the world.
Thai Airways (THAI) resumed maintenance operations at Don Mueang in December 2011, but significant repairs were needed before flight operations could resume.

But with all repair work now complete, THAI’s domestic low-cost subsidiary, Nok Air will resume scheduled services from the airport today. Nok had been operating from Suvarnabhumi airport since the closure, but all services will be moved back to Don Meuang from today.

One airline that won’t be returning to Don Mueang however, is Orient Thai. The carrier said recently that it would stay at Suvarnabhumi to avoid unnecessary upheaval.

Don Mueang acted as Bangkok’s main air hub until Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006. Since then debate has raged as to the positioning of Don Mueang, with IATA saying recently that it supported a single airport policy in Bangkok. Thai AirAsia and THAI’s new regional low-cost unit, Thai Smile however, have expressed interest in using Don Mueang.

At its peak, Don Mueang handled 38 million passengers a year, but this has been reduced to just three million since the launch of Suvarnabhumi.
