Sending out invitation to the world that Thailand and its people are always ready to welcome tourists with CARE, reflecting the kingdom’s renowned hospitality and warmth to visitors. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with the Tourist Police Bureau, Grab Taxi (Thailand), and Central Pattana (CPN), officially rolled out the latest “Thais Always Care” online communication campaign to ensure that tourists from around the world enjoy seamless travel experiences and feel safe and welcome in Thailand.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said:  “The ‘Thais Always Care’ campaign is an open communication with Thais and foreign tourists, especially those from China, which has been a key source market for Thailand. We want to share with the world Thailand’s ongoing efforts to raise safety standards in the travel and tourism industry, as well as the kingdom’s endless charms as a desirable destination for tourists to come and enjoy memorable, meaningful travel experiences.”

Under the ‘Land of CARE’ concept, the ‘Thais Always Care’ campaign reflects Thailand’s renowned hospitality and warmth to visitors and strengthens the image of Thais as a good host for tourists.

CARE stands for: Compassion – reflecting the generosity of the Thai people; Assistant – referring to Thais as being a good host and are ready to help tourists when in need; Relief – indicating Thailand as a perfect holiday destination where tourists can relax and explore a wealth of enjoyable travel experiences; and Elevate – highlighting Thailand’s ongoing efforts to raise tourism and safety standards.

TAT initially unveiled the campaign in December 2023 during the high-profile press conference, spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, that highlighted the commitment from 12 public agencies to work together to facilitate the anticipated millions of travellers on the move in the festive season.

BureauColonel Somchai Theerapatrpaisan, Deputy Commander of General Staff Division, Tourist Police Bureau, said: “The Tourist Police is set to step up the safety and security measures in a full effort by implementing technology to assist foreign tourists. This includes using a Tourist Police mobile truck to communicate with tourists and live broadcast the situation to the bureau of the Thai Tourist Police. Also, the ‘POLICE I LERT U’ application which offers several languages such as English, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Arab helps connect foreign tourists with the 24-hour emergency centre 1155. This also serves as a coordinating centre for international organisations and embassies to provide immediate assistance to international tourists.”

Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, Executive Vice President, Marketing at CPN, said: “CPN is poised to become a comprehensive Tourist Hub. Therefore, we have strengthened the safety measures covering the entire department store by installing CCTV cameras and implementing a strict inspection of visitors and vehicles as well as bag checking at the entrance. Also, security guards have consistently been trained to tackle the emergency and unprecedented incidents.”

Worachat Luxkanalode, Country Head of Grab Thailand, said:  “Safety is our top priority to us. Grab has continuously developed technology to enhance confidence as well as all steps of passengers’ experiences such as implementing a strict partner driver selection system, using an AI-Powered Facial Authentication, arranging online training for driving safely, employing real-time trip monitoring featuring GPS to track vehicle, and providing a safety centre feature to share a real-time location and provide assistance in case of emergency. We hope that these features will strengthen the traveller’s confidence and shape the impressive experience of travelling in Thailand.”

The ‘Thais Always Care’ campaign will involve bringing the leading international KOLs to enhance the positive image of Thailand’s tourism assets and soft powers as well as reinforce Thailand’s image as a safe destination. The targeted audiences are local and foreign tourists including Chinese travellers. This campaign is expected to garner 100 million impressions.

Effective from 10 November 2023 to 10 May 2024, holders of Indian passports or travel documents will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) arranged a special welcome at Suvarnabhumi Airport for IndiGo Flight 6E 1639 from New Delhi, India, on which holders of Indian passports or travel documents travelling to Thailand for the purpose of tourism will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay.

Hosting the airport welcome ceremony, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said: “This special airport event symbolises Thailand’s invitation to Indian tourists to take advantage of the tourist visa exemption during the six-month period. The event reflects the Thai government’s commitment to ease visa and immigration procedures for foreign tourists, especially during this high season.”

Also joining. Thapanee at the event included. Nagesh Singh, Ambassador of India to Thailand, and Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific.

From 10 November 2023 until 10 May 2024, Thailand is extending a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in Thailand for Indian tourists. This followed the similar short-term stimulus visa schemes for Chinese and Russian tourists.

Indian is one of Thailand’s top 10 source markets. In the first 10 months of this year, statistics showed a total of 1,302,483 Indian tourists, an increase of 86% when compared to the same period in 2022.

With the visa exemption scheme, TAT expects Thailand to see 1.6 million Indian tourists in 2023, generating about 65.6 billion Baht in revenue. Indian tourists to Thailand stay on average 7-8 days with daily spending of around 5,500 Baht per person. As well as the millennials and families, Thailand also see affluent Indian travellers in the wedding, golf, and incentive segments.

Chattan said: “TAT will leverage the short-term visa exemption and strengthen partnership with local tour operators to arrange joint sale promotions for different market groups, including leisure, women, seniors and golf.”

Thai tourism businesses will be invited to join the TAT’s participation at two major trade shows in India in 2024, including the Outbound Travel Market (OTM) in Mumbai on 8-10 February and the South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in New Delhi on 22-24 February.

In addition, TAT is increasing the promotion of Thailand’s direction towards high value and sustainability in the Indian market by raising awareness on a multitude of meaningful travel experiences that reflect the Thai soft powers and sustainable goals. Special promotion schemes will be arranged specially for the corporate, incentive, and wedding segments.

Earlier this year, the Tourism Authority Thailand (TAT) officially unveiled the latest iteration of ‘Amazing New Chapters’ campaign, aimed at breathing new life into the inbound tourism sector.

The initiative introduces a host of enhanced tourism offerings centered around experiential travel, marking a significant step towards the full resumption of Thai tourism in 2023. It is estimated that the revival of the industry will contribute approximately THB2.38 trillion (over USD71 billion) to the economy, though still representing around 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

TAT Governor, Yuthasak Supasorn, disclosed that Thailand recorded an impressive influx of around 11.8 million foreign arrivals in 2022, surpassing expectations and serving as the foundation for the ambitious ‘Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign.

The campaign also symbolises the commitment of TAT and all stakeholders, both public and private, as well as the Thai people, to maintain tourists’ confidence in Thailand as a preferred travel destination. The campaign will serve as a platform for promoting sustainable tourism practices in Thailand, with a focus on elevating tourism supply through experiential travel.

TAT Governor, Tanes Petsuwan, highlighted the organization’s plans to allocate additional resources to target new tourist segments, particularly in China and other international markets. Addressing concerns over airline seat shortages, TAT will also emphasize promoting overland journeys as an alternative travel option.

TAT has confirmed its projection of welcoming approximately 25 million international arrivals in 2023, with an estimated 5 million visitors originating from China. The ‘Amazing New Chapters’ campaign will play a pivotal role in facilitating this growth, providing the platform for travellers to indulge in high-quality, unforgettable experiences that showcase Thailand’s 5F soft-power foundations: Food, Film, Festival, Fight, and Fashion.

As Thailand gears up for another positive plot twist in the months ahead, TAT invites travellers worldwide to embark on a remarkable journey that will unfold a tapestry of new and exciting chapters. The campaign promises to create memories that will last a lifetime, reaffirming Thailand’s position as a preferred destination for travellers seeking unparalleled cultural experiences, natural wonders, and warm hospitality.

The Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+), an esteemed B2B networking event jointly organised by the private sector and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, is back with a bang in 2023.

This year, the event has grown significantly, welcoming a larger number of attendees compared to the previous year, comprising 374 buyers from 50 countries, 435 booths of quality sellers from across Thailand and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, and 112 media from overseas and in Thailand.

There was an increase in participants. For sellers, there is an increase of 60.69% despite the additional criteria by TAT for having sustainability projects and initiatives. For buyers, there is an increase of 35.51% in participants with most of them coming from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The surge in participation reflects the unwavering confidence of industry players and stakeholders in the remarkable potential of Thailand as a premier travel destination.

This year, the TTM+ has returned to Bangkok after the event took place in Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and then Phuket in previous years as part of the TAT’s strategy to promote provincial destinations. Attendees got to experience the growth of facilities, infrastructure, and business prospects that Bangkok has to offer after the travel and tourism industry has returned to normal.

TTM+ 2023 has become a remarkable gathering, with new features and exciting initiatives that showcase the country’s diverse culinary scene, domestic travel opportunities, and a focus on sustainability.

Amazing New Chapters: Thailand’s 5F Soft-Power Foundations

TTM+ 2023 also unveiled the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s latest campaign, “Amazing New Chapters,” which highlights the kingdom’s 5F soft-power foundations – Food, Film, Festival, Fight, and Fashion. This campaign demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to diversifying its tourism offerings and engaging visitors on various levels. Attendees saw the unique aspects of Thai culture throughout the event, promoting a deeper understanding of the country’s multifaceted identity.

Thailand’s 5F Soft-Power Foundations encompass a vibrant tapestry of cultural elements that contribute to its global influence. Firstly, Thai cuisine, renowned for its bold flavours and harmonious blend of spices, serves as a gateway to Thai culture, captivating the taste buds of people worldwide.

Secondly, the Thai film industry has garnered international acclaim with its diverse range of cinematic creations, exploring themes of love, tradition, and spirituality. Thirdly, Thailand’s festivals, such as Songkran and Loy Krathong, showcase the nation’s rich heritage and provide immersive experiences for locals and visitors alike.

Additionally, Muay Thai, the national combat sport, symbolizes discipline, strength, and unity, reflecting the spirit of the Thai people. Lastly, Thailand’s fashion industry has emerged as a global force, blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary designs and promoting Thai craftsmanship on a global stage.

Putting sustainability at the forefront

TTM+ 2023 placed a strong emphasis on advocating responsible tourism and sustainability. In an era where environmental conservation and responsible travel are crucial, the event is committed to promoting sustainable practices and initiatives. Recognizing the importance of preserving Thailand’s natural and cultural heritage, the TAT implements various initiatives to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism activities.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage with exhibitors and partners who prioritise eco-friendly operations, support local communities, and protect Thailand’s natural and cultural heritage. TTM+ 2023 encourages all stakeholders to embrace responsible tourism practices and work together towards a more sustainable future for the travel industry.

By embracing sustainability, the TAT aims to strike a balance between tourism development and environmental preservation, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and authenticity of Thailand’s natural and cultural treasures.

Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2023 was an extraordinary event that surpassed expectations and attracted a larger number of attendees who have immense confidence in Thailand’s tourism potential. The introduction of new features, such as the “Amazing Thailand Culinary City” and the focus on domestic travel, adds exciting dimensions to the event, catering to diverse interests and expanding opportunities for collaboration.

Moreover, TTM+ 2023’s commitment to sustainability reinforces Thailand’s position as a responsible tourism destination, showcasing the industry’s dedication to preserving the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. As TTM+ 2023 approaches, stakeholders and travellers alike can eagerly anticipate a bigger, better, and more sustainable showcase of Thailand’s wonders.

The final two episodes of season 27 of ABC’s “The Bachelor,” including the highly anticipated finale, will be filmed in Thailand.

The episodes will feature Krabi, Thailand, which the newest Bachelor, Zach Shallcross, will call home for the week. The episodes featuring Thailand will air Monday, March 20th and 27th, at 8/7c, on ABC and be available to stream the next day on Hulu.

“We are pleased to be a participant in the final two episodes of ABC’s The Bachelor, showcasing how Thailand is a top destination for romantic travel,” said Santi Sawangcharoen, Director of the TAT New York Office and Acting Director of the TAT Toronto Office. “The picturesque province of Krabi is no stranger to proposals, destination weddings and honeymoons, and with the removal of Covid-19 restrictions, travellers can once again easily visit the destination. Shallcross, an endearing 26-year-old tech executive from Anaheim Hills, California, stole Bachelor Nation’s heart on season 19 of “The Bachelorette” with his quiet charm, wit and openness to finding lasting love. Audiences saw Shallcross put himself and his desire to meet “the one” first when he made his emotional exit, opening the door for his “person” to walk through.

A family man at heart, Shallcross splits time between Texas and Orange County. His parents, who have been married for over 30 years, have shown him what true love looks like. He strives to find a love that echoes the standard they have set for him, and he plans to keep them in mind when looking for a life partner. Home is where the heart is; and with the Bachelor mansion not too far away, Shallcross is eager to begin his journey back home in Southern California.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has stated that from 1 October international travellers to Thailand will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination or ATK test results, and a longer length of stay will be on offer, signalling the completion of the kingdom’s full reopening to international tourism.

Effective from 1 October through until 31 March, 2023, the period of stay in Thailand will be extended to 45 days (from 30 days) for tourists from countries/territories entitled for visa exemption, and to 30 days (from 15 days) for those eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VOA).

Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “Thailand has fully reopened to the world’s tourists with the message, through the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign, that our fascinating destination offers something for everyone under the ‘From A-Z: Amazing Thailand Has It All’ concept. We invite tourists to come and experience the existing and new tourism offerings in Thailand which, together with the kingdom’s increasing move towards sustainable and responsible tourism, will make for a truly memorable holiday.”

Thailand began a carefully planned gradual reopening to international tourism from 1 July, 2021, with the Phuket Sandbox, Samui Plus, and 7+7 Extension programmes. This was followed by a four-phase reopening timeline from October 2021 to January 2022 in which destinations throughout the country reopened to tourists. On 1 July, 2022, came the removal of the Thailand Pass registration scheme, and foreign nationals as of then only had to show proof of vaccination or a negative ATK test result within 72 hours of travel.

Now, with the kingdom fully reopened, international visitor arrivals are on the rise, international events and local festivals are being held, and major international and regional airlines are resuming flights from countries around the world.

People are once again excitedly making plans to enjoy unique adventures and experiences in Thailand, with many even going as far as to learn Thai language before their trip for the ultimate experience. This then enables them to make the most of the festivals and events that are now being held once again, as they can more easily immerse themselves in the local culture.

Thai Airways International (THAI) in its recently announced 2022-2023 winter schedule (30 October, 2022 – 25 March, 2023) is operating flights on 34 European, Australian, and Asian routes with increased frequencies on selected routes. This includes daily flights between Bangkok and London, Paris, Zurich, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Manila, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, Mumbai, Dhaka, and Karachi.

On the event scene, as the host of APEC 2022, a number of APEC meetings are taking place in Thailand, most recently the SME Ministerial Meeting (SMM), from 5-10 September, 2022, in Phuket. Sustainable travel continues to be an ongoing opportunity in the industry and with travellers, with many sensitive to the impact travel can have on local environments, economies and the individuals that call these destinations home.

In 2019, Expedia Group partnered with UNESCO and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to launch the first chapter of the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge (hereafter “The UNESCO Pledge”).  Since then, The UNESCO Pledge has quickly expanded, with major chains such as Accor and Iberostar signing on, creating unique connections across the travel industry to create a travel ecosystem that supports sustainable tourism. The UNESCO Pledge now has 4,200 hotels committed to concrete, transparent and achievable action. Hotels wanting to make their commitment to The UNESCO Pledge also can sign up via the newly launched global website.

With the world gathering at COP26 in Glasgow, travel businesses are taking further responsibility towards sustainable travel.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Expedia Group have also signed a further MOU extending their strategic partnership to a third year, promoting sustainable tourism and The UNESCO Pledge as one of the key pillars of cooperation. Nearly 600 hotels in Thailand are currently signed on to The UNESCO Pledge.

“We are committed to giving travellers clear information on sustainable travel options and working with our partners across the travel industry to promote sustainability in the areas where it will really make a difference. It’s really exciting to see The UNESCO Pledge gather pace with hotel groups, destination marketing organizations and Governments alike who all want to be involved in this important mission. Today, we make it easier for hotels to join The UNESCO Pledge through the launch of the Expedia Group and UNESCO global site.” said Aditi Mohapatra, VP, Global Social Impact & Sustainability, Expedia Group.

The unique combined credibility of UNESCO and Expedia Group provides travelers with visibility into travel companies committed to sustainability and the ultimate goals of preserving culture and heritage, as well as minimizing the negative effects that travel can have on destinations. Partners participate in direct, hands-on reporting to UNESCO and work together to share existing efforts and devise plans to support ongoing improvement in their local communities. With the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) online education and training will be offered to strengthen commitments.

“Since its inception, our collaboration with the Expedia Group has brought together a growing number of committed hotel companies and like-minded organizations to prioritize sustainability and environmental protection, as well as encourage economic and community development and responsible tourism.” said Ernesto Ottone R., Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO. “The success of the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge underscores the need to provide incentives to rebalance the relationship between tourism and our environment while strengthening the resiliency of our communities by promoting culture and creativity.”

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has confirmed that the Phuket Sandbox Programme is still on and the island will welcome vaccinated foreign tourists without the need to undergo the 14-day quarantine from 1 July 2021.

The countdown to Phuket’s reopening has started and tourism stakeholders are preparing to safely welcome back foreign tourists.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said, “All of us at the Tourism Authority of Thailand share the excitement and anticipation of everyone in Phuket in the preparation to welcome back foreign tourists in the not-too-distant future. From 1 July, 2021, vaccinated foreign tourists will be allowed to visit Phuket without quarantine, so the countdown starts now to the reopening of Phuket!”

Part of the preparation is for businesses and operators to acquire the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) Plus Certificate, which certifies that at least 70% of the staff has been vaccinated.

According to TAT, there are 1,389 venues and businesses across Phuket that have received the Amazing Thailand SHA certificate. These include 882 in the hotel, accommodation and homestay category; 169 in the restaurants and diners’ category; 157 in the travel agency category, and 181 in other categories.

The Amazing Thailand SHA is used to assess 10 types of business; namely, restaurants and diners; hotels, accommodation and homestays; recreational activities and tourist attractions; transportation; travel agencies; health and beauty; department stores and shopping centres; sports for tourism; activities and meetings, theatres and entertainment, and souvenir shops and other shops. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) recently certified the Amazing Thailand SHA certification in alignment with the WTTC SafeTravels protocols.

Now that more people are getting vaccinated, especially in the US and Europe, Phuket is projected to welcome at least 129,000 international tourists in the first three months.

Good news for vaccinated travellers, you may travel to Thailand without the need to quarantine under the proposed Phuket Sandbox Program starting July 1st.

The Thai government and Tourism Authority of Thailand encourage all travellers to get inoculated prior to their travel to Thailand. Those who were not vaccinated can still travel to Phuket but must stay in Alternative Local Quarantine (ALQ) for 2 weeks.

Planning to travel to Thailand in July? Here are some of the things you need to know. However, it is important to note that the plan is not yet official and may be subjected to changes depending on the COVID situation in Thailand.

Who can travel to Phuket?

Basically, everyone is welcome, including foreign travellers and their children. However, under the Phuket Sandbox Program, visitors must stay in Phuket for at least 7 days, after which they are free to travel.

Vaccinated travellers from low and medium risk countries must have received their vaccines at least 14 days prior to their travel to Thailand. Travellers must present a vaccine certificate as part of the requirements. Minors do not need to show vaccine certificates, but travellers ages between 12 and 18 must undergo rapid antigen test at their own expense, which cost around THB1,200 to THB1,500.

I got vaccinated; do I have to undergo testing and quarantine?

Protocols differ for international and domestic travellers:

For international travellers:

  • Vaccinated travellers (over 18 years old) must do an RT PCR test on day 5 of their stay.
  • Non-vaccinated travellers (over 18 years old) will need to do an RT PCR test upon arrival and stay at ALQ (Alternative Local Quarantine) Hotel for 14 days.
  • International travellers between 12 and 18 years old will need to undergo a rapid antigen test at Phuket International Airport upon arrival. However, children under 12 years old can travel to Phuket with their parents and do not need to undergo any test.

For domestic travellers:

  • Vaccinated travellers (over 18 years old) can enter Phuket without the need of doing any test.
  • Non-vaccinated travellers, including minors ages between 12 and 18 years old, will need to do a rapid antigen test at the checkpoint. Meanwhile, children under 12 years old, can enter Phuket with their parents and no need for tests.

I passed the immigration, what now?

All travellers must download the Thailand Plus Mobile App for contact tracing during their entire stay. It uses GPS and Bluetooth to detect locations of mobile phone combined with check-in records via QR code scanning in locations during the travellers’ journey.

From the airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. Transfer and hotel must be SHA-approved (Safety and Health Administration).

Can I go on island tours?

Vaccinated travellers are allowed to do activities within Phuket, but they must observe standard protocols of DMHTT (distancing, mask-wearing, hand washing, testing, Thailand Plus). On day 5, guests will undergo an RT PCR test. If they test positive, they will be transferred to the hospital. If they tested negative, they can visit other islands around Phuket (Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao, Phang Nga Bay) for a one-day tour.

Can I go to other provinces?

Guests must stay at least 7 nights in Phuket before travelling to any other Province around the Country. They will need to do an RT PCR test 72 hours prior to their departure. In addition, they must present it with the COVID 19 Vaccination certificate at the checkpoint of their destination.

Tourists are allowed to stay less than 7 days in Phuket and travel back home or to another country. However, they are not allowed to travel to another province in Thailand before finishing 7 nights in Phuket. This is to help revive the flailing tourism industry in Phuket.

One of the common complaints about travelling to Thailand post COVID is the complicated and taxing requirements needed for a visa. Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched “Entry Thailand” that will facilitate the process for travellers.

The “Entry Thailand” website outlines the six steps that international tourists must follow to gain their Certificate of Entry. It also provides details of the requirements needed such as arranging quarantine accommodation and Covid-19 insurance.

For vaccinated travellers, the mandatory quarantine period is seven days and the vaccine must be approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health or approved by the World Health Organisation. Meanwhile, non-vaccinated travellers must quarantine for 10 days, but travellers from countries where Covid-19 variants are present must quarantine for 14 days.

Here are the six steps travellers must follow as stated on the Entry Thailand website:

Step 1: Register for the Certificate of Entry, or COE. Pre-approval can take around 3 days.

Step 2: Book a flight on a repatriation flight or semi-commercial flight. Tickets must be purchased no more than 15 days after the COE is pre-approved.

Step 3: Arrange a stay at an Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotel and submit the booking confirmation no more than 15 days after the COE is pre-approved.

Step 4: Purchase Covid-19 health insurance policy no more than 15 days after the COE is pre-approved. Submit proof of purchase. If the insurance policy is booked through “Entry Thailand,” the system will automatically report the booking status.

Step 5: Check the COE status and prepare additional documents before travelling.

Step 6: Prepare documents required upon entering Thailand. Download the “Thailand Plus Application” and complete the Thailand Health Declaration, or T.8 Form.

Thailand may have to postpone Phuket’s reopening and quarantine-free travel to vaccinated travellers slated on 1 July if herd immunity is not achieved before the deadline.

In a statement, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said, “We are concerned about the reopening timeline. We still need to discuss the vaccine administration plan. If the herd immunity goal cannot be achieved, we may have to consider opening only certain areas in Phuket.”

The Thai government stands in the middle of a crossroad of whether to push through Phuket’s “sandbox” pilot program or delay it yet again. Thailand has been hit with a double whammy. The kingdom is seeing over 1,500 daily coronavirus cases. Despite its success in containing local transmission and battling two waves in 2020, the most recent wave caused concern to officials to reassess its plans. While the country originally planned to vaccinate 70% of Phuket’s population by June, especially the tourism workers in the frontlines, rising cases will further slow the rate of vaccination.

The success of Phuket’s reopening rests on vaccinating most of the island’s population, and Thailand’s economy is dependent if the pilot program will proceed smoothly for other provinces to follow.

Thailand is not alone with this dilemma, vaccine supplies remain limited while cases are rising globally and many countries are battling the third wave of infection.

On 11 February, Thailand has announced that its vaccination plan will be carried out in two phases.

The post Thailand unveils two-phase vaccination plan appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

On 11 February, Thailand has announced that its vaccination plan will be carried out in two phases. The first phase aims to inoculate a million of its most vulnerable people by May. Mass vaccinations, on the other hand, will commence in June.

“We are planning two phases: February to May and the second, June to December,” senior health official Sopon Iamsirithaworn announced.

The kingdom is bound to receive two million doses of the Sinovac Biotech vaccine by the end of February, which will be used in the first phase.

For the mass vaccination that will take place between June and December, the authorities aim to administer 10 million doses monthly using 61 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will be produced locally from June by Siam Bioscience.

Thailand aims to vaccinate about 60% of the adult population by the end of the year to achieve “herd immunity”. Sopon added that around 1,000 hospitals are being prepared to administer 500 doses each day.

At the time of this writing, Thailand has recorded 24,405 cases of COVID-19 and 80 deaths, which is far lower than in most countries. However, around 80% of these cases were recorded in the past two months.

TAT wants tourism workers on the first batch

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said that tourism workers should be included in the first batch of the recipients of COVID-19 vaccine in order to gain travellers’ confidence, according to Bangkok Post.

Yuthasak said that it will help kickstart the tourism industry. TAT expects to discuss vaccine plans with the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CSSA).

Private companies are planning to buy vaccines that will largely help and speed up the vaccination process in the nation and will benefit the industry. However, there is a shortage of vaccines at the moment and available doses may be too expensive for provincial administrations and companies, so they have no option but to rely on the state budget and vaccination plan.

Tourism and hotel operators in Thailand are urging the government to speed up mass vaccination programs to restore tourism by the third quarter.

On quarantine

It has been a topic of endless debate whether people who received full doses of COVID-19 vaccines no longer have to quarantine as prescribed by the World Health Organisation. Many countries implement mandatory quarantine for inbound travellers after learning that some people who first tested negative develop infection a few days or weeks later.

The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that people who received the full doses of COVID-19 vaccines can skip the recommended 14-day quarantine as the vaccines have been shown to prevent symptomatic COVID-19.

“Individual and societal benefits of avoiding unnecessary quarantine may outweigh the potential but unknown risk of transmission [among vaccinated individuals],” the CDC said.

People may skip the quarantine after receiving the last dose of vaccine within three months as it takes time to build immunity against the infection, CDC added.

While many countries are closing up again due to the new COVID-19 variant, the borders of the kingdom of Thailand are still open. Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn has confirmed that the Special Tourist Visa program, or STV, is still ongoing.

Foreign travellers willing to brave the global pandemic for a paradise-like vacation in Thailand, they are welcome as long as they have all the requirements. Khaosod English quoted the governor that the same requirements still apply to foreigners travelling on the Special Tourist Visa.

Yuthasak added that the second wave of coronavirus outbreak in the kingdom seems to have no effect on the number of STV applicants so far. Bangkok and five other provinces are currently under certain restrictions, although not us rigid that was seen in March 2020.

Under the STV program, travellers can stay in Thailand for up to 270 days or nine months. Tourists can also fly to the country using the 45-day tourist visa that enables you to visit the kingdom for up to 90 days.

While some countries shun UK travellers, Thailand has no travel ban imposed. However, the kingdom strengthened its testing and quarantine measures.

Although the programs have fallen short of its goal, Thailand has welcomed 825 tourists from 29 countries through the STV scheme, according to the latest available figure announced in December by government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek.

The Thai government has declared 28 provinces, including Bangkok, as high-risk zones as the number of coronavirus cases in the country is steadily rising. On Monday, authorities confirmed a daily record of 745 new infections.

Since the announcement of another lockdown, foreign travellers are wary whether they can gain entry to the kingdom as Bangkok is the main gateway for many countries. Great news for those who booked a trip to Thailand, Thai borders are still open.

At the time of this writing, there is no suspension of the current tourist visas – TR and STV. Tourists can still apply for the said visas at Thai consulates.

Moreover, UK travellers can still gain entry in Thailand. However, quarantine facilities are tightening their measures to contain possible transmission. British tourists must stay in their room for the majority of the stay.

Only certain areas, marked as “red zones,” where infection and transmission are verified are put under strict restrictions. Authorities conduct contact tracing encouraging everyone who visited red zones to contact medical authorities and be tested. Thai people are quick to heed warnings and follow the restrictions to the dot.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha urged the public to stay at home as much as possible to help contain the infection and to avoid a stricter lockdown. Unlike the previous lockdown last year, this new “lockdown” include measures such as:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel as much as possible
  • Mass gatherings are prohibited
  • Shops and restaurants can operate from 10am-5pm
  • All bars are closed and liquor ban is implemented

Thailand has recorded 8,439 coronavirus cases and 65 deaths, which is low based in world standards.

The kingdom is quite serious in bringing back tourists in its shores as some Thai consulates dropped the hefty bank account balance requirement in order to attract more travellers to apply.

Tourists and expats rejoiced when Thailand announced that it will reopen its borders for tourism along with new visas geared towards long term travellers. However, the new requirements to apply for the new visas proved too much than others.

In September, Thailand announced that the requirements for the new TR (valid for 60 days) and STV (valid for 90 days) visas are:

  • Bank statement providing proof of income in the last six months equivalent to THB 500,000 (USD 17,000)
  • Medical insurance that covers COVID-19 with at least USD 100,000 in coverage for the entire duration of your stay
  • Proof of alternative state quarantine reservation (ASQ)
  • Proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR swab test taken within 72 hours prior to the flight

However, the kingdom is quite serious in bringing back tourists in its shores as some Thai consulates dropped the hefty bank account balance requirement in order to attract more travellers to apply.

Instead of USD 17,000, Thailand embassy in Los Angeles lists USD 700 per person, and USD 1,500. Meanwhile, consulates in London and Berlin did not mention any specific amount required from applicants. While the bank requirement is removed, applicants are still required to procure a medical insurance amounting to USD 100,000.

This is not the first time that the kingdom altered its visa requirements in order to lure more tourists and revive its thriving tourism industry. Initially, TAT relaxes STV visa requirements as it aims to attract lucrative tourists from mid-risk countries in Europe and Scandinavia.

Also, Thailand deliberates in shortening the mandatory quarantine requirement from 14 days to 10 days. All travellers to Thailand must undergo a COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival. If a tourist test positive, he or she will be admitted to a hospital; if a tourist test negative, he or she will head to an alternative state quarantine facility for their required 14-day quarantine.

With all of these changes, the Southeast Asian paradise hope to welcome more tourists in the coming months.

Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism has announced that the beloved Asian destination will finally open to foreign tourists starting October.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn made the bold announcement on 21 August adding that the island of Phuket will serve as the experimental ground for the upcoming opening of borders testing how successful restarting tourism is.

Since the country is testing the waters, it is taking cautious strides coming up with several conditions for foreign tourists to enter the country.

  1. Travellers must fly directly into Phuket. A negative PCR test may also be required by all arrivals to fly into Phuket.
  2. Tourists must stay in Thailand for at least 30 days.
  3. Half of the 30 days stay will include 14 days staying in quarantine at their hotel and common areas within the hotel’s property.
  4. In order to leave the hotel premises and explore Phuket, travellers must register two negative PCR tests. Tourists who want to leave Phuket and explore other parts of Thailand must conduct a third PCR test on the third week of their visit.
  5. It is still unclear which countries will be welcomed in its shores. However, it is most likely that the country will open its borders first with countries in Asia which the virus has also been successfully contained, and/or nations that are vital for Thailand’s tourism and economy like China and Russia.

Currently, only foreigners who are medical tourists, direct family members of Thai nationals, business investors, and skilled foreign workers are given permission to enter Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) marked the 3rd year of its “Upcycling the Oceans, Thailand” clean-up effort with a “Shade of Blue Ocean” activity, held on 20-21 December, 2019, at Commemoration Public Park, Ban Phe in the eastern coastal province of Rayong.

The two-day ‘Shade of Blue Ocean’ activity was attended by over 500 participants comprising figures and representatives from TAT and partners, the local administration, communities, tourism businesses, volunteers, divers and the locals.

As well as the beach clean-up effort, participants also took part in experiential learning activities including the categorisation of waste for proper management and recycling processing, as well as gained more knowledge at the ‘Shade of Blue Ocean’ and ‘Responsibility Rayong’ panel discussions. The event’s venue was also decorated with materials made from recycled waste products along with an exhibition on DIY waste items.

Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said: “The project is part of the TAT’s CSR strategy. It reaffirms our commitment to promoting responsible tourism and our leadership role in driving green initiatives. By instilling environmental consciousness among the tourists, tourism operators and local communities, we believe that it will help reduce tourism-related waste despite growing tourist numbers in the country.”

Wego, a popular online travel agent (OTA) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), has announced its new partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), to increase travel demand to the country from the MENA region.

Under the new agreement, Wego will promote Thailand as a “friendly, beautiful, cultural and historic destination” and will push bookings for, both, on and off- season to the Land of Smiles.

“Unique leisure and business offerings to travellers all year round”

The new partnership is expected to generate destination awareness and promote tourism to Thailand focusing on the great experiences, events and all year-round activities. Travellers will get to try the local traditions and festivities and explore trending destinations in Thailand such as Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Samut Prakan, Chon Buri (main image), Phuket, Songkhla, Suphan Buri and Bangkok.

Mamoun Hmedan (above left), managing director of MENA and India at Wego, said: “Last year, we saw over 5 million searches from MENA travellers on Wego to Thailand. The country continues to provide unique leisure and business offerings to travellers all year round. Our partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand further supports our strategy to partner with leading tourism boards around the globe and increase the number of bookings and searches to these destinations.”

The mix between beaches, food, nature and culture along with the diverse activities and the mesmerizing island escapes that Thailand offers have put it among the top favourite global destinations for MENA travellers.

Pichaya Sais, director of TAT’s Middle East office (above right), said: “With the way people are booking holidays becoming more and more digitally-focused, it is important for us to ensure we are creating forward-thinking and digitally-advanced partnerships that make Thailand as easily accessible to visitors as possible. Last year, we welcomed over 550k visitors from the Middle East and we hope that this partnership with Wego will help us build on this.”

As one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world,  with the country expecting to hit 40 million visitors by 2020, Thailand is a magnet for leisure and business travellers from across the globe. However, despite this international appeal, the South America seems, comparatively, resistant to the exotic charms of the Land of Smiles.

A quick breakdown of arrivals shows that most target markets displayed significant growth in 2018; Visitors from East Asia totalled 23.62 million (+9.21%), Europe 5.91 million (+4.03%), the Americas 1.41 million (+3.70%), South Asia 1.77 million (+11.32%), and Africa 174,565 (+9.63%). Only Oceania and the Middle East showing a decline by 1.40% and 7.16% respectively.

However, even though the Americas as a whole is performing well, the Latin American countries contribute less than 2% to the total figure.

In a bid to combat this shortfall The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently hosted 40 top tour operators and travel experts from five Central and Latin American countries for the first ever fam trip and business networking session in Thailand. Taking place from 27 April to 7 May, the event incorporated with Emirates Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Bangkok Airways for the travel trade from this region.

Phang Nga Bay

The group arrived in Thailand from Sao Paulo, Brazil, on 28 April and was escorted by TAT Los Angeles Office on visits to popular tourist attractions in Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Phuket, Ko Samui and Phang Nga. A market briefing, product presentation and the “Amazing Thailand Latin America Trade Meet” were organised on 2 May, at the Park Hyatt Bangkok Hotel, the first such event in Thailand.

The fam trip for the travel trade from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Colombia was organised as part of the TAT strategy to tap potential new markets, diversify the current range source markets and reduce over-exposure to visitors from any one region.

The Latin America tourism market is considered a strong potential market for Thailand. In 2018, Thailand hosted 202,106 visitors from Latin America, generating approximately 15 billion Baht or 500 million US dollars in revenue. The market is likely to grow further in 2019. The major source markets are Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.

Temple of the Emerald Buddha

In addition to hotel inspections and visits to popular iconic spots; such as, the Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Chinatown and the Flower Market, the fam trip were include some unique experiences; such as, a Walking Tour of Tha Din Daeng and Kudeejeen Community on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, best known for the Catholic community (mainly of Portuguese descendants) around the Santa Cruz Church.

Runjuan Tongrut, TAT executive director of the Americas region, said: “While currently, tourists from Latin America may still make up a small percentage of tourist arrivals in Thailand, they hold enormous promise.

The cost of travelling from Latin America to Asia is relatively high, which means the customer segment comprises upper-income earners, with high spending power and long average length of stay. We are confident that this trade meet will eventually help boost the growth of tourists from the Latin America market even further.”
