Tourism New Zealand recently concluded its first global trade incentive campaign which was a part of the global launch of their latest 100% Pure New Zealand global campaign, IF YOU SEEK.

As part of a concerted effort to support tourism recovery in New Zealand, the organisation has been actively increasing its trade initiatives across markets. The first-of-its-kind incentive campaign was launched to encourage trade partners to seek more and enhance their destination knowledge of New Zealand. To qualify, participating travel sellers were required to participate in activities and utilise the marketing resources in-market for a chance to join a trade familiarisation trip to New Zealand.

Travel sellers from India, Australia, Germany, Japan, North America, Singapore, South Korea, and the UK joined the recently completed IF YOU SEEK trade familiarisation trip. Between 17-22 April 2023, they participated in unique experiences through sensory, seeker-themed activities handpicked in conjunction with the campaign. Shalini Kalian from NCS Travels and Tours Pvt Ltd and Harneet Singh Sawhney from Born 2 Holiday LLP were the winners from India who got the opportunity to visit New Zealand.

They visited the North Island (Waiheke Island, Waikato, Rotorua and Northland) and enjoyed these experiences during the trip:

  • Waiheke Island: Pōwhiri (Māori welcome ceremony) at Piritahi Marae, followed by a bespoke tour of the island led by Ananda Tours and a visit to Batch Winery
  • Maungatautari (Sanctuary Mountain): private guided tour of the conservation reserve where they learnt about efforts to re-introduce and breed endangered species through the installation of the world’s largest pest-proof fence
  • Hobbiton Movie Set Tours: an enchanting, guided tour through the world-renowned picturesque pastures of the Shire of Hobbiton, the iconic movie set featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.
  • Redwoods Treewalk: Redwoods Nightlights – a magical tour through Rotorua’s redwood forest under the stars and featuring 34 lanterns by renowned designer David Trubridge
  • Hell’s Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa: The Hell’s Gate Experience – a three-in-one experience featuring an interactive geothermal walk, mud baths and sulphur spas
  • Carino Wildlife Cruises: a sightseeing and dolphin-watching sail through the Bay of Islands
  • Canopy Tours in Rotorua: an exciting zipline activity exploring the magnificent canopies and ancient forests of New Zealand
  • Top Trail Cycle Hire and Tours: an adventure-packed cycling adventure along the breath-taking Twin Coast Cycle trail, spanning from Opua in the stunning Bay of Islands all the way to Horeke in the majestic Hokianga
  • The Stone Store and Kemp House: a visit to one of New Zealand’s oldest historical sites that holds the stories of the encounter between Māori and European missionaries
  • Waitangi Treaty Grounds: a guided tour around New Zealand’s most important historic site combined with a Māori cultural experienceand a look at the world’s largest ceremonial waka

“Our trade partners are some of our most valuable advocates when it comes to driving in-market presence and preference for New Zealand. Destination knowledge is crucial to what they do, and we hope this experience in New Zealand has left them with a deeper appreciation and understanding that will be translated in how they position New Zealand to their customers in the market.” shared Gregg Wafelbakker, General Manager, Asia, Tourism New Zealand.

Aaron Gilden, Head of Sales, South & Southeast Asia, UK & Europe, Air New Zealand, echoed sentiments, adding, “We hope the experience will help our trade partners generate more meaningful conversations and interest around New Zealand. As the airline partner, this campaign opened opportunities for us to better engage with our partners and in turn, strengthen our show of what Air New Zealand has to offer.”

Here is what the Indian winners had to say: “It was a wonderful experience exploring the North Island! I was completely intrigued by the Māori culture – the history and language. We got to try numerous Kiwi delicacies and explored multiple locations. We also got to build connections with the local suppliers who provided us with immense knowledge of the various offerings of New Zealand. The first-hand experience was truly educative, and I can’t wait to promote the beautiful country”, said Shalini Kalian, NCS Travels and Tours Pvt Ltd

“Right from the restaurants/hotels chosen to every activity that was planned gave us a varied experience that will help us promote New Zealand in the Indian market. We had people from regional tourism offices joining us to give in-depth knowledge on products and services in their region. This helps us immensely to sell products of different regions” said Harneet Singh Sawhney, Born 2 Holiday LLP.

The global incentive FAMIL succeeded in providing a holistic experience of New Zealand’s varied offerings, enabling, and empowering the travel trade partners to seamlessly promote the country.

Christchurch has won the right to host the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) Conference in 2026, only the second time this event has come to the Southern Hemisphere. The 11th IAG conference will run for five days at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, and is expected to attract 800 to 1000 delegates from around the world, with 63 countries affiliated to the association.

Christchurch NZ Head of Business Events, Megan Crum says this prestigious academic event puts Christchurch on the world stage as an international business events destination. “Not only do we have incredible new infrastructure capable of hosting such a large event, ease of access through our international airport, and a vibrant, compact and walkable city, we also have a location rich in diverse geography and geology,” she says.
“Our South Island region is a particular hotspot for landscape investigation, making us a geomorphology knowledge and research hub. The local university, University of Canterbury is home to one of the largest groups of geomorphology academics and their research topics will be of great interest to IAG delegates.”

The 2026 conference is being hosted by the Australia and New Zealand Geomorphology Group, the Australasian affiliate of the International Association of Geomorphologists, with support from the University of Canterbury, Tourism New Zealand, and ChristchurchNZ Business Events. World-leading New Zealand academics championed the bid, led by Dr. Sam McColl from GNS Science, Professor Ian Fuller of Massey University, and Professor James Shulmeister, Head of School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury.

“The diversity and dynamism of Aotearoa New Zealand’s geomorphology, and the proximity of Ōtautahi Christchurch to some of the most active landscapes in the world makes it a bucket-list destination for our international science community, and the ideal location to host this distinguished quadrennial event,” Prof. Ian Fuller says.

“Hosting the conference gives us a unique opportunity to showcase our landscapes and our research first-hand. The conference will be accompanied by pre- and post-conference fieldtrips led by researchers who have an intimate knowledge of processes and landscapes around the motu (country) and neighbouring Australia,” he says.

“Our mid-conference fieldtrips will connect delegates first-hand with the world-leading geomorphology and local research on the doorstep of Christchurch – our tectonics, glaciers, mountains, volcanoes, hillslopes, rivers, and coasts.” Tourism New Zealand General Manager NZ and Business Events Bjoern Spreitzer says Tourism New Zealand has been working with the Geoscience Society of New Zealand to encourage more bids for international conferences in the earth sciences sector and it’s great to achieve this win.

“New Zealand’s expertise in geoscience, together with the ‘natural laboratory’ of our landscapes and our strong event infrastructure and support, makes us an excellent destination for business events in this field. Hosting events like the IAG Conference will both showcase New Zealand research and enhance local knowledge,” he says.

When it comes to re-thinking tourism, New Zealand invites travellers who are curious enough to look a little deeper and go a little further to discover more authentic, meaningful connections through transformative travel experiences. From tantalizing local cuisines to peaceful forests, from warm sandy beaches to adrenaline pumping activities, New Zealand helps you to broaden your horizons, change your perspective and meet interesting people. This World Tourism Day, Tourism New Zealand brings to you a special set of travel experiences that is sure to help you discover the best version of you:

If You Seek to connect with Nature:

Slow down and connect with nature in a unique forest bathing experience that amplifies your senses and leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalised. Forest bathing is the act of replenishing one’s soul, by going on a walk-through nature. The act of forest bathing, which originated from Japan, has many health benefits and is said to improve immunity, alleviate anxiety and depression and even decrease blood pressure. Discover the natural environment of Waiheke Island as you participate in a wellbeing workshop and retreat designed to give you the wellbeing tools for a healthy and happy life.

Dive Tatapouri – Tarawhiti- Gisborne There is no better place to encounter magical rays, when Dive Tatapouri offers a world-famous interactive marine experience with stingrays and other sea life! The visitors get to discover the Tamariki (children) of Tangaroa (the Māori God of the Sea), whilst immersing themselves in the local culture and magical marine surroundings of Tatapouri on the East Coast of the North Island, where the first light touches our shores. Dive Tatapouri is located on an idyllic waterfront location, and the owners are forever mindful that they share it with taonga species that require their protection, including penguins and rays. Environmental protection is key to their business with onsite projects that include providing protection with nesting boxes and pest trapping.

If You Seek Peace, Relaxation and Tranquility:

Mudpools

Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of Rotorua’s famous geothermal activity by immersing yourself in the silky-smooth mud pools at Hell’s Gate, an active geothermal reserve and mud spa. A place where mud heals and water soothes, the baths have been used by indigenous Māori people as a place for healing and revitalization for centuries. Sit back and relax as the nutrients in the mud soothes your body and gently softens and exfoliates your skin, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

Stargazing | Dark Sky Project: Mackenzie Region

Savour the stillness, peace and calm of the infinite night sky in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island at the Aoraki Dark Sky Reserve. Unique to the Mackenzie Region, the clear skies found in this part of the world are like nothing else in New Zealand. In 2012, the 4300 square kilometre area was declared the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, with light pollution strictly controlled in the area.

It’s the ultimate test, jumping out of a moving plane and free-falling thousands of feet through the air. The rush of wind through your hair is as strong as the thump of your heartbeat as it pushes your boundaries. In New Zealand, the landscapes beneath you are enough to take your mind off the fear; towering mountains, crystal blue oceans and rolling, green valleys that take on another level of beauty when witnessed from thousands of feet in the air. In safe hands no matter where you decide to take the leap, you will be rewarded with a feeling of accomplishment and a memorable bucket list travel experience like no other.

 Heli hiking:

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a glacier, and with the heli hike option on the West Coast of New Zealand, there’s the added bonus of being able to witness the sheer scale of nature’s power from above. Test yourself as you crawl through ice caves, learn to use crampons as you walk on ice and hear your guides share how the glaciers came to be. Immerse yourself in nature and feel small in an environment so much larger than yourself.

Tourism New Zealand and Air New Zealand have launched a joint campaign in the US and Canada to showcase Aotearoa and encourage North American travellers to book a holiday to New Zealand.

The campaign features a special offer for flights to Auckland in the low and shoulder seasons, with the option to add-on a visit to any one of Air New Zealand’s twenty domestic destinations.

Air New Zealand chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty says, “With the New Zealand borders now fully reopened to the world, a thriving tourism industry is important for both New Zealand and Air New Zealand. By launching new marketing activity in the US, we’re doing all we can to remind travellers that New Zealand and all its regions is a beautiful place to visit, any time of year.”

“We’re excited to be kicking off our first three-way joint venture campaign since 2019 and reinvigorating our partnership with United Airlines in North America, extending Air New Zealand’s network in the region.”

Tourism New Zealand chief executive René de Monchy says, “The return of travellers to New Zealand and the recovery of air links from important markets such as North America is an important step for the tourism sector.”

“We’re able to join forces with Air New Zealand so that destination New Zealand attracts high quality visitors from this important market. The campaign will encourage visitors to travel more widely around Aotearoa New Zealand to accelerate and support the sector’s recovery,” he says.

Geraghty adds, “We’ve been flying to the US for more than 50 years – it’s an incredibly important market for us. It’s fantastic to see that over the next few months and leading into Christmas, flight loads are performing really well and by summer (in New Zealand), seat capacity will be back to around 85% of pre-Covid levels.”

“To solidify this position, in just five days, Air New Zealand will for the first-time touch down at John F. Kennedy International Airport, making the non-stop Auckland – New York service the airlines seventh US port.

“And to demonstrate our commitment to the Canadian market and due to an increase in demand, we’re excited to announce we’ll commence a daily service between Auckland and Vancouver.”

Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand have extended an existing MoU that will enable this and other activity over the next three years.

Tourism New Zealand’s iconic trade event, Kiwi Link returned with a spectacular buzz this year as it welcomed travel trade partners from Asia to reconnect with New Zealand tourism businesses. After two years, Kiwi Link Asia 2022 is Tourism New Zealand’s first in-person trade event in Asia spanning across three days in Singapore between 29 – 31 August 2022.

Elaborating on the event, Gregg Wafelbakker, General Manager – Asia, Tourism New Zealand said: “With the New Zealand borders having opened to the rest of the world on 1 August 2022, this was the perfect time to reconnect with the Indian travel trade fraternity to showcase destination New Zealand and the ever-growing Kiwi hospitality.

Kiwi Link Asia was a splendid platform that enabled key Indian buyers to reconnect with New Zealand and its wide range of offerings, thus enabling them to promote the destination better and support conversions. We are ecstatic to see the turnout this year and we’re looking forward to Summer 22/23 and beyond as we welcome back visitors. India is one of the priority emerging markets for Tourism New Zealand and Kiwi Link Asia provided a great opportunity to strengthen our partnership with our travel trade partners in India.”

Kiwi Link Asia provided a unique opportunity for representatives of the New Zealand tourism industry to educate and establish business relationships with key travel partners from India, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea. From one-on-one appointments with product managers to networking opportunities at official events, Kiwi Link Asia 2022 was the one-stop destination for all things travel related to New Zealand.

Fifteen buyers from India attended the event, which included Thomas Cook India, MakeMyTrip Kulin Kumar Holidays, Kesari Tours, Veena World, FCM Travels and Pathfinders Holidays among others. The event saw Indian buyers engaging with 55 industry operators across New Zealand such as Air New Zealand, Hobbiton Movie Set, Scenic Hotel Group and more, giving a holistic understanding of the product offerings and building deeper connections.

The New Zealand government has announced further relaxations in border restrictions, allowing all fully vaccinated international travellers, including from India, to travel to Aotearoa from August 1, 2022. The new opening date is two months earlier than the previously announced time frame.

Fully vaccinated Indian visitors will be able to travel to New Zealand without self-isolation on provision of a negative pre-departure test. Negative Rapid Antigen Tests will be required on arrival and on day 5/6. New Zealand had been progressively opening its borders from April, first to Australian visitors and then in May to visitors from visa-waver countries.

René de Monchy, Chief Executive, Tourism New Zealand, said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors, family and friends back from August. New Zealand has plenty to offer international visitors from breathtaking landscapes, rare and remarkable wildlife to our rich culture and heritage; our people and place are what make us unique, and we look forward to sharing this with the world again.”

In 2020, Tourism New Zealand in India rolled out the “Messages from New Zealand” campaign which featured everyday New Zealanders sharing video messages of hope and care with their international whānau (family).

Through this initiative New Zealand reached out in a heartfelt and genuine way by sending messages of positivity and optimism to Indian travelers. As part of efforts to prepare for the reopening of borders, Tourism New Zealand has also been supporting travel partners with new resources such as a dedicated marketing hub, regular training sessions and most recently, the launch of a revamped travel trade website.

Tourism New Zealand has relaunched its travel trade website with the aim to deliver the best information, education, resources and support to inspire and help travel agents to sell New Zealand. The new website has simplified functionality with content grouped in four different sections: Training & Inspiration; Tools & Resources; News; and Events.

According to the release, the new website provides a comprehensive one-stop-shop for online training and inspirational content, as well as all sales tools and resources. The updated design and layout are more intuitive and user friendly for the agents. The website content is dedicated to informing them about New Zealand tourism product news, travel industry events and providing training opportunities to them.

Indian travel trade remains committed to destination New Zealand. There was an overall increase in engagement for the month of March due to the website’s relaunch, where India had the highest number of travel agents creating new 100% Pure New Zealand Specialist Program (NZSP) accounts (157) compared to the rest of the global markets. India along with Japan had the highest number of agents logging into (NZSP) to complete their modules.

“India is an important market for Tourism New Zealand and Indian travel agents play an integral role in our initiatives. Our new travel trade website is aimed at equipping our travel trade community with tools to engage their customers more creatively. Content available includes an extensive library of digital resources including all training webinars created over the past two years.” says Venessa Chen, Regional Marketing Manager-Asia, Tourism New Zealand.

The New Zealand government recently announced its borders will reopen on 12 April to fully vaccinated Australian visitors and then from 1 May, vaccinated travellers from visa-waiver countries and those with valid visitor visas will be able to arrive.

From these dates, visitors will be able to travel to New Zealand without needing to self-isolate. They will need to provide a negative pre-departure test and undertake Rapid Antigen Tests [RAT] on arrival and on day 5. Tourism New Zealand’s Chief Executive, René de Monchy said: “We look forward to welcoming international business events back to our shores very soon. We’ll be ready to welcome delegates back to experience our breath-taking landscapes, amazing activities and to meet with our inspiring thought leaders. Our people and place are what make us unique, and we look forward to sharing this with the world again.”

New Zealand had one of its largest ever contingents at AIME – 17 partners – including the major regional convention bureaux, hotels, and venues, plus its three new generation convention centres – Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre and the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland – ready to talk to Australian and Asia Pacific organisers about hosting their business event.

Even with borders closed New Zealand received interest from Australian and Asia Pacific incentive organisers and continued to bid for and win international conferences including The International Coral Reef Society’s Symposium in Auckland in 2025, The International Congress of History of Science and Technology in Dunedin 2025 and The International Sedimentological Congress (ISC) in Wellington in 2026.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Australian event organisers are considering hosting a business event in New Zealand in the next four years, according to a survey of Australian corporate, association and not-for-profit organisers commissioned in 2021 by Tourism New Zealand’s Business Events team.

New Zealand’s strong health response, including the lowest death rate in the OECD over the past two years and its high rates of vaccination, alongside its reputation as a beautiful place to visit, will be an asset in this market.

New Zealand government has announced the country’s borders will reopen on May 1 allowing international manuhiri (visitors) from visa waiver countries, including the US , to travel to Aotearoa (New Zealand) without needing to self-isolate on arrival.

From May 1 travelers will be able to travel to New Zealand without self-isolation on provision of a negative pre-departure test. “We look forward to welcoming manuhiri [visitors], family and friends back in May,” said Tourism New Zealand’s Chief Executive, René de Monchy. “New Zealand has plenty to offer international visitors from breathtaking landscapes, rare and remarkable wildlife to our rich culture and heritage; our people and place are what make us unique, and we look forward to sharing this with the world again.”

Getting to New Zealand from the US has never been easier. From Los Angeles, Auckland is a non-stop 12 hour overnight flight. You can literally ‘wake up in New Zealand’. Prior to the pandemic you could also fly to New Zealand non-stop from San Francisco, Houston, Chicago and Honolulu with all of these routes scheduled to return in 2022.

A land of diverse regions and landscapes, New Zealand stretches across two main and a myriad of small offshore islands. Here you can experience adrenaline, luxury and unique culture all in the same day. Thrill seekers can add the adrenaline-rush of bungy jumping or exhilarating jet boat safaris, while the more sedate will enjoy world-class golf courses and award-winning wine and cuisine.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s fascinating Māori culture provides unique opportunities to connect and learn. A multicultural nation made up of vibrant and embracing cultures, Kiwis pride themselves in the warm welcome, or manaakitanga, travelers receive when visiting Aotearoa (New Zealand). You can find all the resources you need to plan a trip to New Zealand at newzealand.com.

The high level summary of entry requirements for all travelers to New Zealand pertaining to COVID-19 is as follows:

  • All travelers entering New Zealand must be fully vaccinated in line with New Zealand government entry requirements.
  • A negative pre-departure test (PCR, LAMP or Rapid Antigen) in line with New Zealand government requirements is required for all travelers.
  • No compulsory requirement for all arriving travelers to either self-isolate or enter a government managed isolation hotel, i.e. all forms of isolation for arriving travelers (including foreign nationals) are removed at all border reopening steps except for unvaccinated New Zealand citizens and residents returning to the country.
  • All travelers will be provided with two rapid antigen tests at no charge on arrival at Auckland Airport which are self-administered after exit from the airport.
  • Travelers will be asked to undertake the first test on day of arrival and then a second test on day 5/6 after arrival, this can be done once travelers have left the airport e.g.at home or hotel.
  • Travelers who test positive via either of their arrival day or day 5/6 RAT test will be required to take PCR test to confirm positive status, if positive they will then be asked to self-isolate in line with the requirements that apply to all community COVID-19 cases in New Zealand.

December 10, 2021 will mark 20 years since the international premiere of the first film in the iconic The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. And with that, the world saw its first glimpse of New Zealand as Middle-earth, setting the scene for J.R. R Tolkien’s novel series.

The impact of the films on tourism in New Zealand has been monumental, and it remains a driver for visitation 20 years on. The 2019 International Visitor Survey conducted by MBIE found 18% of holiday visitors cited Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit films as the reason they first became interested in visiting New Zealand. The 2019 International Visitor Survey conducted by MBIE found approximately 33% of all holiday visitors to New Zealand will visit a film location.

Jaw-dropping natural landscapes across both the New Zealand’s North and South Islands play backdrop for many of the film’s iconic scenes. Wētā Workshop [based in Wellington, New Zealand] were the masterminds behind the concept design, armour, weapons, creatures, miniatures and special makeup effects for the The Lord of The Rings Trilogy.

To mark this milestone, Hobbiton Movie Set will be celebrating with a special outdoor film screening where the adventure first began, on the grassy clearing of The Party Field. It was here in January 2000 that over 100 extras and approximately 300 crew filmed one of the most memorable scenes from the film, over the course of three nights. The event will be the first 4k screening of The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in Australasia.

Experience the magical world of The Lord Of The Rings in real life only in New Zealand once the borders open in the near future.

It’s been a tough year. 2020 has seen cancelled vacations, postponed weddings and missed celebrations. That is why Tourism New Zealand is partnering with Trees That Count to build a Forest of Hope, so that people all over the world can turn their disappoints from 2020 into something beautiful.

Give back to yourself, gift a tree to a friend that’s had a hard year, or add a tree to better the environment. Trees That Count is New Zealand’s community marketplace to connect tree funders and planters.

Becoming a part of this movement is contributing to an initiative that will make a lasting difference to New Zealand and benefits the climate of the world over. One of the best actions we can take to tackle climate change and to improve our environment is to plant more native trees.

Trees will be planted in Northland and Queenstown. Right now, we can’t share our beautiful country as we normally would, but we can still add to its beauty, and the health of the environment. Once we’re able to welcome visitors again you can visit your tree that you helped grow.

Pip Casey, regional manager UK & Europe, Tourism New Zealand said: “In New Zealand, the Te Reo Māori values of manaaki and tiaki have become incredibly relevant today. They speak to the importance of having empathy and inspire us to care for people and place. While our borders remain closed to international visitors, we want to extend a little manaaki and encourage a sense of tiaki to those who are in need of some optimism for the New Year. With trees as a natural symbol of life and growth, the Forest of Hope is a way for people to say goodbye to this year’s disappointments and plant a seed of hope to look forward to better times ahead in 2021.”

Tourism New Zealand virtually launched its new campaign ‘Messages from New Zealand’ in the presence of Steven Dixon, Tourism New Zealand’s regional trade marketing manager in Asia and David Pine, New Zealand’s high commissioner to India.

‘Messages from New Zealand’ features everyday New Zealanders sharing video messages of hope and care with their international whānau (family), presenting a unique Kiwi perspective about what is important to them. The campaign showcases locals who embody the values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (care for the land) through positivity and encouragement. This beautifully captures their wholesome messages of kindness and compassion to family, friends and loved ones all around the world.

The hero film asks, “If you could encourage the world to do one thing, what would it be?”, New Zealanders responded to the theme with a range of heartfelt messages, such as “listening very carefully to one another”, “stop polluting the earth”, to “stay positive”, “make amazing memories”, and “talk to a stranger, ask them how they are”.

To bring to life the campaign in India, Tourism New Zealand will be partnering with its Indian whānau, including influencers – who have a strong affinity with New Zealand – highlighting their own personal experiences and connections with the country.

Commenting on the campaign, Dixon said: “The travel industry has been impacted by the Covid-19 crisis tremendously in the  past few months and it is important now more than ever, that we stay connected to visitors and our travel trade friends in India. Through Messages from New Zealand, we are staying in touch with our international whānau, including those right here in India, and letting them know that we are waiting to welcome them to our shores again when the time is right and borders reopen.”

The campaign will be released through social and digital channels. Each of these ‘Messages’ will show that New Zealand is a country which is driven by what matters in life, underpinned by the purity of its values such as Manaakitanga and Kaitiakitanga.

One example of how the national tourism organisation has been keeping connections strong in India, is its response to a survey conducted in May 2020 among travel trade representatives. The survey highlighted that 99% of travel trade contacts were interested in attending Tourism New Zealand hosted webinars during the lockdown period.

To meet this need, Tourism New Zealand conducted ten webinars during the lockdown period in India, which saw 5,000 travel agents across India participate.

Wellington, New Zealand

Tourism New Zealand has released new figures that show Wellington as an emerging tourist destination.

The tourism board highlighted a significant increase in travellers from Singapore, noting a 170% growth in the number of visitors since 2016 according to the Wellington Airport. Furthermore, there have also been increases in the number of visitors from other parts of Asia including India and Indonesia, which recorded a 92% and 76% growth in visitor numbers respectively.

“We are working well together with airlines and tourism boards”

Mike Vincent, Wellington Airport’s airline development manager, said: “It is great to see Wellington increasingly included in touring itineraries. We are working well together with airlines and tourism boards to generate positive tourism outcomes for the region, and it is great to see these efforts resulting in accolades and growth.”

The increase in visitors from Singapore can be attributed to Singapore Airlines flight service to Wellington which launched in 2016, making travelling to Wellington more convenient.

Steven Dixon, Tourism New Zealand’s regional manager, South & South East Asia, also commented: “It makes absolute sense that so many Singaporeans have been attracted to Wellington. The city and surrounding regions have a wide range of activities and attractions which are of interest to Singaporeans such as excellent food options, craft beer, rich art and cultural scene, and easy access to wildlife and nature. And of course, it is also a mecca for film tourism.”

Top 8 Wellington attractions

Zealandia eco-sanctuary – a picturesque sanctuary that offers New Zealand’s rare and extraordinary wildlife just minutes from the city.

Weta Cave Workshop tour – an immersive filmmaking experience at the iconic Weta studios.

Te Papa Tongarewa – New Zealand’s national museum is the best place to discover New Zealand’s national stories and treasures.

Craft breweries and beer bars – Wellington is the brewing centre of New Zealand, and there are plenty of places to try excellent local beers.

Wairarapa wineries – The wild and diverse landscape of the Wairarapa is the perfect backdrop for world-class wineries and producers.

Mountain biking – With over 217 miles of trails in the region, Wellington is an ideal destination for mountain biking.

Zest Food Tours – Taste your way across the compact capital on this delicious walking tour.

Hannahs Laneway – This cosy culinary quarter is every foodie’s dream destination.

Last year, 3.8 million overseas visitors came to New Zealand (year-end August 2018). International tourism is New Zealand’s top export earner contributing USD 14.5 billion into the economy and directly employing over 188,000 people (year-end March 2018).

AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand has revealed a new adventure tourism experience – the Nevis Catapult – in the remote Nevis Valley near Queenstown, New Zealand.

Adrenaline junkies, see if you can handle this one. There’s a new ride in New Zealand that can sling you 150 metres into the air at 62 miles per hour in 1.5 seconds – providing 3G of force. The Nevis Catapult is not for the faint of heart as the “world-first” experience launches you from a ravine, inducing a quick adrenaline rush through a series of jaw-dropping bounces.

The official opening of this experience brings to fruition three decades of planning and development by the AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand team.

“There’s nothing else quite like it”

Responsible for the thrill ride is co-founder, Henry van Asch, who commented on the announcement: “It’s hugely exciting to be here today, revealing the Catapult to the world, following years of playing around with the idea. It’s a pretty unique feeling, surprising even. There’s nothing else quite like it.”

With special guests and media watching on, Van Asch officially opened the catapult by being launched himself. The Nevis Catapult is housed in a pod between a series of cables, alongside another kind of thrill attraction, the Nevis Swing. It uses a combination of height, flight, speed, a dash of the fear factor, and a customised high-speed winch system developed over years of the team’s research.

About coming up with the idea, Van Asch said he got it while travelling around France during the 1980s with a friend (and later co-founder, AJ Hackett). He said: “In 1988 we took Bungy to the world, and put New Zealand on the world adventure tourism map. Thirty years on, it’s wonderful to still be pushing the boundaries globally.”

“Sheer Kiwi craziness”

“Something like this could never have been accomplished without a combination of creativity, daring, sheer Kiwi craziness and of course investment in years of design engineering and testing,” said Stephen England-Hall, chief executive, Tourism New Zealand.

Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand have announced a marketing partnership to promote the country in key offshore markets, with a focus on off-peak periods. Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand sign MoU

The organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining their intent to invest up to $10 million each over 12 months for joint activity in Australia, China, North and South America, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Europe.

This is the fifth consecutive year companies have coordinated their international market development and promotion, taking the total joint investment to $100 million to date.

Air New Zealand’s chief executive officer Christopher Luxon said: “Spreading tourists and their holiday spend more evenly throughout the year and beyond the main gateways is a clear way for our regions to share tourism’s benefits – such as increased year-round employment. Working in partnership optimises our strategy to attract more premium travellers to our shores, who stay longer, explore more widely and enjoy our country in all seasons.”

Tourism New Zealand chief executive Stephen England-Hall added: “With inbound visitors growing year on year and the industry the biggest export earner in the country, we have an opportunity to focus our collective efforts in promoting tourism to our regions and in the shoulder season.”
