World Travel Market – London has redesigned and renamed its co-located travel hospitality technology show. Previously called Travel Forward, it will become WTM Travel Tech and offer more features for exhibitors and visitors. The first event will take place from November 7-9.

Show organisers are planning two theatres in the WTM Travel Tech zone – one to showcase new products and the other to host seminars, debates and presentations. The product showcase theatre will offer exhibitors more options to present their new services and innovations to visitors. WTM Travel Tech will also have an updated brand positioning to reflect the way it has evolved from Travel Forward, as well as a dedicated section within the WTM London website.

The changes have been made as a result of findings from in-depth research conducted among buyers, exhibitors and visitors. The survey was conducted shortly after the respondents had attended WTM London 2021 and Travel Forward, which took place in a hybrid format for the first time, featuring a live show on November 1-3 last year an online event on November 8-9.

The poll found a strong preference for Travel Forward to be closely integrated with WTM London. Vasyl Zhygalo, WTM portfolio director, said: “We received very positive feedback from delegates who attended both events last year and there was great support for our new hybrid format. Our post-show research also indicated to us that our travel tech offering will benefit from close integration with the main WTM London event, along with more content to show how travel and hospitality technology is a core element of the wider travel industry.”

WTM London and Travel Forward 2021 will have a COVID testing facility inside ExCeL so visitors who need to take a test before flying home can do so without having to leave the venue. The service is being offered by ExpressTest by Cignpost, one of the UK’s leading testing providers and an ABTA partner. Both PCR and lateral flow tests are available, with PCR results delivered by 10pm the following day and lateral flow results within 40 minutes.

With over 3 million tests done to date Cignpost ExpressTest has 36 testing sites around the UK and is sole provider at London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh Airports.

Christian Corney, CEO of ExpressTest by Cignpost said: “We are delighted to be working with WTM 2021 as official testing partner, providing both gold-standard PCR and lateral flow tests for exhibitors and delegates alike. ExpressTest has been at the forefront of testing to help the travel industry operate through the pandemic; it’s a privilege to be partnered with this important event which delivers the platform to plan for the recovery and future of the sector.”

Travel Forward, the global event for travel technology co-located with WTM London, has revealed the line-up for this year’s conference programme which features one of the travel industry’s most exciting start-up competitions. This year’s physical event is taking place at ExCeL London from 1-3 November 2021 and will be followed by WTM & TF Virtual taking place on 8-9 November.

The conference programme comprises multiple tracks, offering a mix of panel discussions, Q&As, fireside chats, keynotes, sponsored sessions and competition. All speakers will inspire and educate their peers, sharing best practices for the wider good.

For 2021, Travel Forward has linked up with World Tourism Foundation Lucerne (WTFL) for the Front Runners Travel Tech Competition and Summit, taking place on the Tuesday afternoon from 14:00. The mini-conference includes a start-up pitch competition. Some 350 early-stage businesses from 80 countries pitched their plans, virtually, to a panel of judges which came up with a short-list of three for each of the categories – smart mobility, hospitality and experiences.  The overall winner will be picked from the category winners.

As well as startups, Travel Forward is welcoming some of travel technology’s established players. Sabre, the leading software and technology provider that powers the global travel industry and one of the Travel Forward Stage partners, will explain how personalisation and retailing will shape the future of the hospitality industry. Charlotte Lamp Davies from consultancy A Bright Approach will interview Scott Wilson, EVP & president, Sabre Hospitality Solutions, from 14:00 on Monday 1 November.

Payments are an area of increasing interest and importance for Travel Forward’s audience. Mastercard will be on stage, with its executive vice president Kevin While explaining how advances in payment technology can make life easier for agents and suppliers.

The travel industry’s relationship with sustainability has always been a focus for WTM London and Travel Forward. This year, airline and airport technology supplier SITA will be talking about the specific ways technology is helping the aerospace industry to not only reduce its greenhouse gas emissions but also become a more sustainable industry and a greater force for good. Yann Cabaret from SITA will be interviewed on the Travel Forward Stage by John Strickland from JLS Consulting.

Elsewhere, Harold Goodwin, WTM’s responsible tourism advisor, is also addressing responsible technology. A session will concentrate on case studies around how technology can encourage behavioural change in travellers.

Marketing is another area where travel companies are seeing the beneficial potential of technology. A three-hour mini-conference hosted by The Five Percent, an online learning community for early-stage and transitional entrepreneurs, talks place on the Wednesday afternoon. Sessions are moderated by CEO and co-founder Marcus Murphy.

The three-day summit kicks off at 10:30 on the Monday, setting the tone with a session on artificial intelligence, hosted by Charlotte Lamp Davies from consultancy A Bright Approach and featuring speakers including Andy Owen-Jones, CEO and co-founder of bd4travel and Sundar Narasimhan, President Product Labs and Product Strategy at Sabre

The opening morning also includes a discussion based on Travolution’s latest Innovation Report and a look at how technology can help hotels manage staff during the fragmented return to travel.

Cybersecurity was a concern for the industry before COVID and should be an area of intense focus for firms as travel restarts. A session hosted by James Cocker from InfoSecurity Group. Simon Press, Exhibition Director, Travel Forward, said: “We believe there will be a post-COVID travel event bounce back – it’s already happening – and we are determined that Travel Forward, in a crowded field, will be on every technology company’s priority list. We set the bar very high with our previous conferences, and 2021 will be as strong as its predecessors. We’re particularly excited about Front Runners. Travel Forward is committed to supporting travel tech start-ups and the tie-up with WTFL strengthens our appeal to the ecosystem and takes Travel Forward to the next level.”

Exhibitors at World Travel Market London and its co-located technology-focused show, Travel Forward, will be granted free access to a proprietary app that helps them to gather and convert new leads while staying in line with current health and safety guidelines. The app, Emperia, has been developed in-house by parent company Reed Exhibitions (RX) since 2019.

It has been upgraded over the past eighteen months and is being relaunched across a portfolio of face-to-face industry events. The app is available free of charge for registered exhibitors and can be accessed via the Google Play store for Android devices and AppStore for iPhone users. The exhibitor’s designated admin person will receive the details to set up their company’s Emperia page within the app.

The admin can pass the company access code to any attending executive, who can then download the app, log in, and start collecting leads. All leads are fed back to the admin who holds the master document where all collected information is stored. At the show, exhibitors can scan the dedicated QR code on visitors’ badges which captures the information the visitor provided when registering to attend.

Emperia also allows exhibitors to annotate each lead’s entry and to set custom questions to help qualify leads further. The app needs an internet connection to log in, but scanning and editing can be done offline, with all shared functions automatically synchronised if the signal drops out.

Simon Press, exhibition director, WTM London and Travel Forward, said: “We’re all excited about the return of industry events and catching up with colleagues and contacts, but we haven’t lost sight of the fact that the wheels of business need to start turning again. Emperia has been developed specifically to help exhibitors capture contact details on-site using cutting edge technology which streamlines the process of gauging the potential value and following up the leads.”

WTM London and Travel Forward platform called Connect Me is now open to ensure registered delegates make the most of their time and get back to business. Attendees can use Connect Me to create professional and business profiles; connect with exhibitors, trade, media and buyers; pre-schedule meetings and select must-see conference sessions.

They can also manage their diaries for the physical and virtual shows before coming to ExCel London, according to a statement. Meetings can be conducted during the three days of the WTM London and Travel Forward physical shows, which run from November 1-3  and WTM & TF Virtual, which takes place on 8-9 November.

The platform is live from September 28, allowing attendees to familiarise themselves with it before the physical and virtual shows kick off and catch up on any missed content once WTM London and Travel Forward are over. It will facilitate one-to-one appointments among buyers, exhibitors, trade professionals and media, as well as conference sessions across WTM London, Travel Forward and WTM & TF Virtual.

Exhibition Director Simon Press said: “The Connect Me platform has been designed so delegates can get the most out of their time at WTM London and Travel Forward physical shows and WTM & TF Virtual to help them get back to business and move forward. Buyers can also register and search for exhibitors that best meet their business needs and fix appointments. Whether attending the physical shows or virtual, Connect Me will present options to set up both physical and virtual meetings.”

WTM London 2021 will see some of the largest gatherings of tourism professionals since 2019. Responsible tourism will be a major highlight, with events such as Saudi Giga Projects Put Sustainability First.

The Travel Forward Stage will welcome brands such as MasterCard and SABRE, while WTM London has again lined up top CEOs and C-level speakers to its sessions, including those from Expedia, TUI and the BBC.

Travel Forward and WTM London have announced that more than 400 registered buyers have expressed an interest in talking to technology suppliers at this year’s hybrid event, taking place at ExCeL London on 1 November – 3 November, 2021 followed by WTM & TF Virtual, on 8-9 November.

The live shows will be one of the first face-to-face gatherings for the international travel and tourism sector since restrictions eased and the WTM & TF teams are drawing upon their global experience and expertise to deliver a secure environment in which to conduct business.

Travel Forward Buyers’ Club members are restricted to senior travel industry, IT and technology professionals with direct purchasing and contracting authority for technology.

Elsewhere, more than 300 members of the WTM Buyer’s Club have expressed an interest in technology. These buyers are vetted in the same way as their Travel Forward peers, giving technology exhibitors the chance to engage with travel suppliers, destinations and attractions.

Some of the top names in travel will be in the market for technology at WTM London. The world’s biggest online travel agents – TripAdvisor, Expedia Partner Solutions and Priceline Partner Network are exhibiting at WTM London and are interested in technology as well as inventory.

The names from the Travel Forward Buyers’ Club include IATA – the airline industry’s global trade association – and NEOM – a proposed $500 billion new smart city and tourist destination in Saudi Arabia, powered exclusively by renewable energy, covering more than 26,500 square km, with 460 km of Red Sea coastline. The majority of the buyers are from tour operators, travel agencies or technology companies with more than 60% holding board-level and/or senior management positions.

Simon Press, exhibition director for WTM London and Travel Forward, said: “Our decision to position Travel Forward as a standalone event co-located with WTM London is starting to pay off, particularly when looking at buyers. Destinations exhibiting at WTM London are increasingly using technology for tasks ranging from marketing to queue management and we can put them in front of the right Travel Forward supplier.”

“Technology will be fundamental to the short-term recovery and long-term future of the travel industry, and we’re 100% committed to helping all stakeholders connect the dots,” he added.
