A couple from Hull will be celebrating their 20th year of travelling with TUI in 2024, having made it their mission to travel the world during their retirement. Hull couple have taken over 70 TUI holidays in 20 years

Pat and Fred Lilley have been visiting their local TUI retail store in Hull, for almost two decades, having travelled to over 15 different destinations. When asked about their travels, Pat said: ‘’Since the pandemic, we try and go away once every other month to enjoy every minute of our retirement. We’ve been to places such as the Dominican Republic, Benidorm, Cape Verde, Tunisia and Southern Spain but we couldn’t pick a favourite.’’

The pair have formed a fantastic relationship with the TUI Team in Hull. Tommy Mulholland from the store team said, ‘’We love welcoming Pat and Fred into the store and we’ve become really great friends over the years. Their love for going on holiday is magnetic and they are fantastic ambassadors for TUI having encouraged family members to enjoy their holidays with TUI also.’’

Pat also talked of the importance of retail stores having only ever booked in-person. ‘’Tommy and the entire team in Hull are so kind and welcoming. They not only look to find us the best deals but they look at destinations they think we would enjoy and help to arrange support for our accessibility needs’’ said Pat.

Pat and Fred take their 73rd holiday this Christmas which they’re spending in Benidorm. In celebration of this achievement, TUI have upgraded their flights as they enter this special anniversary year and wish the couple the happiest of travels.

Joanne Dooey, president of SPAA, said she was delighted to see such a major force in travel return to the fold. She added: “The travel sector has faced a particularly turbulent time in the past 24 months, and we firmly believe that the best approach to addressing these challenges is for the industry to come together with one voice. I believe the company and its employees will make an exceptional contribution to the SPAA.”

Belinda Vazquez, retail director at TUI said: “We’re really excited to once again be a member of SPAA. We already work closely with our key Scottish travel agent partners and hope that we can develop these relationships further and work with other members to support the Scottish travel marketplace. Our membership will also allow us to develop a stronger relationship between SPAA and our TUI Retail network.” The SPAA, founded in 1921, is the world’s oldest organisation representing travel agents.

Starting summer 2020, the tour operator TUI will be expanding into the river cruise industry following the purchase of three passenger ships.

TUI River Cruises will offer adults the ultimate flexibility to create their perfect trip when it comes to river cruising, with the option to create bespoke packages to suit their every need.

Customers will choose their board basis, whether that’s full board plus with wine, beer and soft drinks included with meals, or selecting the premium drinks package, cabin type and even their favourite cocktail in the lounge. The cruise line will also boast a handful of private balcony suites for those seeking to add even more luxury to their package.

When it comes to choosing the perfect excursions, TUI River Cruises will offer a huge variety for all travellers as they work with the destination services team to complete the perfect end to end TUI service.

On offer are active excursions for avid adventurers, sightseeing tours with a local expert for those looking to broaden their knowledge, relax and learn, and those looking to try something a little different can experience a bike tour.

The cruise line will also offer GBP120 credit to put towards any shore excursion bookings, allowing each customer the perfect opportunity to tailor their holiday to suit them.

Chris Hackney, managing director of cruise for TUI UK & Ireland, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be moving into the river cruise market, we’re always looking for new opportunities to offer our customers even more variety when it comes to choosing the perfect holiday and our river cruises will really take this to the next level as customers are able to personalise their package whether that’s board type, cabins, excursions and even cocktail choice.”

“We’re very proud to be known for the friendliest service, exciting itineraries and great value for money when it comes to our ocean cruises and we look forward to bringing this to TUI River Cruises.”

With the Croatian Tourist Board reporting a rise of UK holidaymakers in 2017, which saw the numbers of Brits heading to the Eastern European country rise eight % and a 26% increase the year before – TUI has launched has introduced two new Croatian services to take advantage of the trend.

Flying to Rijeka – Croatia’s most hash-tagged destination on Instagram this summer — from Manchester and London Gatwick the weekly routes will begin operations from the 23 May in 2019.

Ivona Grgan, director of the Croatian National Tourist Office, UK & Ireland said: ‘’Croatia’s multiple offering championed by its natural beauty boasting over 1,000 islands, coastlines, peninsulas, mountains and continental urban flair offers something for every discerning traveller.

Unsurprisingly, a variety of locations in the coastal, mountain and continental regions dotted with the National parks and UNESCO sites, provided an ideal film-set for a number of recent films, most notably Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again which, after the premier, is witnessing a rush of UK visitors to the farthest inhabited island of central Dalmatia, island of Vis, marking 16% and 17% rise in arrivals and overnight stays. Croatia’s tourism fuelled by films is another boost to the country’s prospects in the UK market and enhanced visibility.”

Old Harbour, Rab

TUI customers will also have the option of taking a ferry to nearby Rab, location of TUI’s new adults-only concept resort TUI Sensimar Carolina.

Mark Hall, director of product at TUI UK, said: “We are excited to launch yet another interesting and different destination to our customers. We are committed to offering holidaymakers the best travel experiences around the world and we know that Croatia is proving extremely popular with UK customers so we are positive this new addition to our portfolio will be a success.

Adding a TUI branded hotel to one of the islands shows we continue offering customers even more choice and flexibility when it comes to adults only holidays.”

TUI UK & Ireland has appointed its first Head of Innovation as it looks to further digitise the business.

Jo Hickson, who joined from Home Retail Group where she spent five years as Group Head of Innovation, will be focused on driving customer focused innovations across TUI UK & Ireland. In her new role, Jo will report to Jeremy Osborne, director of Strategic Business Change and Innovation.

A key part of the role is to run the newly created TUI Holiday Lab, the company’s centre of innovation and collaboration. The Lab is also currently recruiting an additional member, as it looks to add a creative technologist with user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) capabilities to its already entrepreneurially-minded and broad-skilled team.

Launched in March this year, the TUI Holiday Lab is designed to explore and develop new and emerging technologies, and deliver forward-thinking products that will enhance the holiday experience for customers. Since launching the team has introduced the Thomson Apple TV app, which contains videos of the holiday company’s destinations, including Costa Rica and Iceland, and products such as its Sensatori resorts. TUI UK & Ireland was the first UK travel brand to have a presence in the TV app store, and the first travel brand in the world to have an app based on video content.

Leading the innovation team, Hickson will focus on anticipating the next advances in technology and customer behaviour, scanning the horizon for future disruptive trends and innovation opportunities – including natural language processing and virtual reality – and using this to feed a pipeline of innovation projects.

Hickson has a wealth of experience in innovation management. Prior to her time at Home Retail Group, she held the position of Global Product Manager in Telefonica’s Madrid office, responsible for innovation and product and services development.

The ski giant is currently part of TUI’s Specialist Holiday Group, which TUI Group confirmed it is preparing to dispose of.  However, Crystal Ski Holidays and Thomson Lakes & Mountains will not form part of the disposal, and the brands will be integrated into existing TUI UK and Ireland business operations alongside Thomson and First Choice.

Nick Longman, managing director of TUI UK & Ireland said: “Crystal and Thomson Lakes & Mountains is already a very successful business within TUI’s Specialist Holiday Group and a very welcome addition to our brand portfolio in the UK. We already have a very good understanding of the business as we take many of their customers away on Thomson Airways and I believe the integration of the brands into a business of our size and scale will not only help to fast track growth but deliver even more exciting ski and lake and mountain holidays to top resorts.”

Thomson Airways will use its new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and a fresh order of B737 MAXs to bring a more family-focused flying experience, it announced this week.

Family booths with seating around a table for four to six people will be placed at the back of the new B737 MAX aircraft, while an onboard kids club will also be introduced to keep children entertained on flights.

Couples will have the option to sit in pod-style seats that have a table for champagne, in-seat charging and mood lighting and all those on short and medium-haul flights will be able to speak to the ‘HolidayMaker’ for information on what to do in-resort.

Destination information and inspiration will also form part of the new in-flight entertainment, which will also have a bedtime story channel and content for teenagers.

The announcements came after the airline confirmed it will have another two Dreamliners and 47 new Boeing 737 MAX by 2020, bringing its average fleet age to five years.

The new Dreamliners will be used on a new direct route to Costa Rica from November 2015, with the other potentially going to St Lucia, Antigua, Bonaire, Curacao, Vietnam or Malaysia.

The B737 MAX aircraft with the designs mentioned previously will be used on short and medium-haul services.

A beach snack bar will be in the premium cabin

TUI UK & Ireland’s managing director David Burling said the changes would help people to see the airline as a scheduled carrier and ‘holiday airline’.

“Our airline business has traditionally been categorised in the charter sector which is often perceived as the poor relation to scheduled and, in reality, bears little resemblance to the Thomson Airways experience today. Our overall goal is to make travel experiences special and, as the flight marks both the start and end of the holiday, we see it as an integral part of the whole holiday experience,” he explained.

“That is why we want to want to define and lead a new category of flying – the holiday airline category.  This describes an airline designed for the specific needs of the holiday maker and fully connected to the holiday experience in the destination.”

TUI UK & Ireland has warned of staff redundancies as it unveiled plans to close its Coventry office.

The travel company has entered a consultation process with staff based at the office who will be asked to consider relocating to other UK sites in contact centres.

Most will be relocated to Swansea or Luton while other will remain with an outsourced specialist provider. The Coventry office is due to close in December 2015.

However it warned that others will face redundancy with a consultation process to start on 2 October for 45 days.

It comes as the company looks to shift and become an online-driven firm after spending the last year introducing new technology and processes.

A statement from TUI said: “The proposed changes are not a reflection on the great work done serving customers by all the teams based in Coventry. They are the result of many months of research, consideration and discussion about the future of how TUI UK & Ireland communicates with its customers and the conclusions have not been reached lightly.

“TUI UK & Ireland is committed to working with and supporting all staff impacted if the proposed changes needed to deliver the customer centric strategy and enhanced customer contact experience are made.”

TUI UK & Ireland has announced it is in consultation with agents over shift patterns and whether its stores should open 30 minutes later into the day.

A consultation with 300 of its smaller stores will start on Tuesday (9 September) to obtain views on the shops opening at 09.30 instead of 09.00.

Its proposals would also change the number and pattern of shifts that agents would work in the Thomson and First Choice shops.

The talks come as the company looks to become an online-driven business but keep its high street presence in place.

A statement from TUI said: “These proposals will ensure that the nationwide network of shops can be maintained whilst not compromising on the high levels of service currently delivered to customers, wherever they live in the country.

“Thomson retail staff are a valued and essential part of the business, and TUI UK & Ireland is committed to mitigating the impact on them if the proposed changes needed to modernise the retail operations are made.”

TUI UK & Ireland has launched a new multi-million pound system that will enable its stores to follow up online and call centre bookings.

The new ‘Connect’ system is the first in a series of technological changes that links the bookings process from time of booking to post-travel, with information to be shared across booking channels.

After the roll-out in the next nine months its consultants in shops will be able to help with bookings made online or over the phone.

Staff will also be able to spot loyal customers easier and see information such as birthdays, anniversaries and favourite destinations.

Fraser Ellacott, customer operations director for TUI UK&I, said: “TUI strives to put the customer at the heart of everything it does and this new system will make it much easier to do so.  By connecting our front line staff both here and overseas we’ll be able to offer our customers a much more personalised service that’s tailored to what they want from their holidays.  It will also help us share even more information across the business so we can answer anything our customers want to know at the touch of a button.”

TUI has already introduced free WiFi at several of its resorts this year and also updated its websites.

TUI UK & Ireland and JustGo have mutually agreed to end their franchise agreement later this year.

The deal will finish on 30 September as part of TUI’s move away from the franchise model.

JustGo currently has 14 shops and is now rethinking its future operating model for October onwards.

“We have worked closely and successfully with JustGo for eight years, with both parties benefiting from the partnership.  However, looking to the future, a franchise operation such as this does not meet our long term distribution strategy of controlling more of our distribution through our own routes to market,” said Kathryn Ward, director of retail of TUI UK & Ireland.

“We will continue to work closely with JustGo through their period of transition and, going forward, we hope to continue our strong commercial agreements, as well as maintain our already solid relationship. We would like to thank JustGo for their support as a very valuable franchise partner and wish them luck as they move forward with their business,” she added.

Don Bircham, managing director of JustGo, comments: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to work with one of the most respected names in travel during our franchise agreement. My thanks to the retail team at TUI UK & Ireland for all their support over the past eight years and for their commitment to a strong commercial relationship moving forward. We have a highly productive and profitable retail business and look forward to forging new partnerships in the next phase of our expansion and development.”

Ellacott, who has been managing director at Thomson and Island Cruises since 2011, is to join the TUI UK & Ireland board on 1 October and will become its first customer operations director.

In the newly-created position Ellacott will be responsible for all customer facing areas of TUI in the UK and Ireland including retail, financial services, contact centres, overseas holiday experience, commercial and ancillaries and the property portfolio.

He will retain his cruise responsibilities.

“Over the last two years, Fraser has successfully developed the brand strategy for Thomson Cruises and grown the profitability of this area of our business and moving forward he will be instrumental in the growth of our multi-channel customer proposition,” he added.

CEO of eWaterways, Daniela Wagner commented; “We are delighted to announce this partnership between our two companies as this will provide a number of exceptional small ship cruise products for TUI that fits with their medium and long term plans for diversification, as well as adding to our own distribution strategy in terms of positioning eWaterways with key wholesalers and Tour Operators in the UK”.

The agreement will widen TUI’s current cruise portfolio significantly, allowing the company to capitalise on a surge in popularity underway within the small ship sector.

Tui UK cruise general manager Karen Doyle said: “TUI UK & Ireland are delighted to be working with eWaterways. As a company we are always looking at new opportunities to take advantage of growing sectors, such as River Cruise, and expanding into this type of market will really offer something different and unique for Thomson and First Choice customers. Holiday experience is everything and ensuring we vary our programme continually keeps things fresh and exciting for both our retail agents selling our holidays and our customers buying them”

TUI Travel has announced it cut losses by 9% in the six months up to 31 March 2013 compared to the same six months a year ago.

The travel company reduced its operating loss from GBP317m (USD489m) to GBP289m in the six months, or down to GBP274m when keeping exchange rates the same as the previous year.

Its net debt improved to GBP680m from GBP979m with free cash outflow of GBP774m up from GBP233m.

In the UK market its losses were down GBP22m to GBP103m with revenue up 5%. Sales of its ‘unique holidays’ were up 15% for this summer with its online sales now accounting for 42% of its holidays sold here.

In the bedbank sector TUI saw 14% growth during the period for summer 2013 and has generally seen strong sales from the region with a 13% increase. The group expects a 10% underlying profit growth by its full year and has so far sold 58% of summer 2013 holidays.

“Our strategy of focusing on unique holidays and putting our customers at the heart of our business continues to deliver strong growth. With our market leading brands and scale we have the ability to give our customers great holiday experiences, at terrific value, in a segment of the market that is increasing in popularity,” said Peter Long, Chief Executive of TUI Travel PLC. “Our drive to Modern Mainstream is contributing significantly to our outperformance in a number of markets where we are achieving strong booking volumes and improved margins. Given current trading and the visibility we have within our businesses we anticipate full year underlying operating profit growth of at least 10% on a constant currency basis.”
