The maiden direct flight from Dubai to Pattaya by Flydubai arrived at U-Tapao Airport in Chon Buri Province on Friday night, carrying 158 passengers. The passengers, including six bloggers, were greeted by U-Tapao Airport Director, Admiral Rapeepong Sowan, the vice mayor of Pattaya City and director of the Pattaya Office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

According to the TAT, Flydubai will operate seven direct flights per week between Dubai and U-Tapao. Last year, 66,000 tourists from United Arab Emirates (UAE) visited Thailand, making them the 20th largest group of foreign visitors. As informed by a news report in Thaiger. The TAT anticipates that about 150,000 tourists from the UAE will visit Thailand this year, which is expected to generate about 14 billion baht (USD 430 million) in revenue, averaging about 90,000 baht (USD 3,000) per visitor.

Despite increasing foreign arrivals on direct Pattaya flights, many eateries in Pattaya’s Walking Street are, nonetheless, complaining that they are still struggling with a low level of business. They say they are looking forward to the return of Chinese tourists, expected to bring a significant kick to the tourism industry as Chinese tour groups can finally travel to Thailand again after three years of restrictions.

Now 240 flights are forecast to arrive during the Chinese New Year period, a massive increase compared to last year when the Covid-19 pandemic decimated the travel industry.

Thailand is home to a large ethnic-Chinese population, which means that Chinese New Year is a big deal here. The holiday, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, has been celebrated in Thailand for centuries by the Chinese-Thai community. Festivals offer exciting experiences filled with dragon parades, fireworks, dance performances, and more.

Pattaya is hosting the Pattaya Chinese New Year Festival from January 20-22, at Central Pattaya Activity Lawn, Lan Pho Public Park, Na Kluea, and Walking Street.

The festival will feature lion and dragon dance performances, concerts and an exhibition on the history of the festival. Pattaya officials have been decorating many areas of the city, including Beach Road, with red lanterns.

Thailand’s fast growing business travel sector is expected to get a further push from the Thai Government’s “Thailand 4.0” development strategy and the flagship Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) which will see investment in a major airport expansion and other infrastructures.

“Along the path to realize the success of many Thailand 4.0 development goals, there are plentiful opportunities for meeting, convention and trade exhibition to play a supporting role,” said Mr. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, president of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), a public organization tasked with promoting the country’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry.

U-Tapao International

He was speaking at a seminar titled “Eastern Economic Corridor: Fast track to Thailand 4.0?” which TCEB hosted recently in Bangkok to serve as a platform of exchange between the Thai and foreign business communities. Thailand reached the one million mark of foreign business travellers for the first time last year.

“Investment is good for our industry. All these infrastructures, airport, seaport, rails and roads. Those are major requirements for exhibitions to bring the country to a higher level in competing with other countries,” said Talun Theng, president of the Thai Exhibition Association.

“The EEC is a strategy to implement the Thailand 4.0 vision in a right direction,” according to Dr Somkiat Tangkitvanich, president of Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI). “The success of the EEC should be measured by the increase in technological capabilities of the country.”

According to the TDRI, U-Tapao, the Bangkok area’s third international airport, with a planned investment of 200 billion baht (USD 5.7 billion), is the “Cornerstone of EEC” and is attracting global players thanks to its location advantage. A second runway and two new terminals will be added to the airport, making Thailand become a regional hub, and allowing the development of a strong aviation maintenance repair and overall (MRO) industry.

Private investment in the EEC area will enjoy special incentives, such as tax privileges, long-term land lease, and fast-tracked administrative procedures.

U-Tapao Airport serves Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard

U-Tapao airport, which serves as the gateway to Thailand’s eastern seaboard, including the popular beach resort of Pattaya, is in line for a major investment and expansion.

The Bangkok Post reports that a second runway and a new, larger passenger terminal are among the projects under consideration as part of the Thai government’s plan to expand the three airports in and around Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao.

The newspaper cited the director of the newly-created U-Tapao Airport Authority (UAA), Worapol Tongpricha, as saying that a second runway, measuring 3,500 metres in length and running parallel to the existing one, could be built first. Following that, a new terminal capable of handling 15 million passengers per year may be developed, to cater for the rising traffic.

These plans are being revealed even before the current phase of expansion at U-Tapao is complete. The new terminal building, which will have a capacity of three million passengers per year, is currently under construction and expected to open in August 2017.

Thai duty-free giant King Power has also revealed that it is considering plans to open a retail outlet at the terminal.

Passenger numbers at U-Tapao are surging; full-year traffic at the hub jumped more than 300% to 710,000 last year, and is expected to rise almost 70% this year to 1.2m. More than 1,000 hectares of land has been set aside for the airport’s expansion.

A former military base, U-Tapao now serves several Thai and international carriers, including AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airlines and S7 Airlines.

The Thai government has approved plans to spend billions of dollars upgrading and expanding the country’s airports.

The Bangkok Post reported Thailand’s Industry Minister, Uttama Savanayana, as saying that the national plan had been approved by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, and would be funded using public-private partnerships.

In total, the plan calls for THB406 billion (US$11.6bn) to be invested across the country over the next 10 years. This includes the three airports serving the Greater Bangkok region – Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao – plus 10 mid-sized regional hubs and a series of small city airports.

Overall, the country’s annual passenger capacity will more than double from 130 million at present to 277m a decade from now. Suvarnabhumi Airport’s capacity will double from 45m to 90m, Don Mueang will increase from 30m to 40m, and U-Tapao’s capacity will surge from three million to 30m passengers per year.

The 10 regional airports earmarked for development are Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Hat Yai, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen, while the small city airports will include Mae Hong Son, Hua Hin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Pattani and Chumphon.

And also from 27 November, the airline will launch a new daily domestic service between U-Tapao and Udon Thani, in northeast Thailand.

“The reason we are continuously launching new routes from U-Tapao Airport this year end is because we see its potential and the opportunity to draw travel and investment to the eastern region, whether it is to the popular entertainment destination, Pattaya or to Rayong’s industrial centre,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“We especially want to allow Chinese and foreign travellers to conveniently access the eastern region while affording residents of the area new exciting ways to travel with AirAsia.”

By the end of 2015, AirAsia plans to have two A320 aircraft based at U-Tapao Airport. AirAsia’s Malaysian unit also flies direct from Kuala Lumpur to U-Tapao.

Thai AirAsia has unveiled plans to launch two new routes connecting Pattaya with mainland China, as it makes the resort town its fifth operating base in Thailand.

The low-cost carrier will launch flights to Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport from Nanning, the capital of southern China’s Guangxi region, and Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi, on 25 and 26 September respectively.

These flights will primarily serve the needs of Chinese tourists wanting to visit Thailand’s beaches, enabling visitors to fly directly to Pattaya and the eastern seaboard, without having to drive from Bangkok.

“We believe that tourism in the east and Pattaya is growing very rapidly and that U-Tapao Airport is absolutely ready to accommodate regular flights,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

“These beliefs led us to creating our latest flight base and we chose the two Chinese cities of Nanchang and Nanning as its first routes. With plans to expand to other routes both domestic and international we have targeted acquiring two Airbus A320s for a fleet at U-Tapao,” he added.

The flights from Nanning will operate four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays), while the Nanchang service will run on the remaining three days of the week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays).

U-Tapao Airport, the former military base, becomes Thai AirAsia’s fifth base in the country, following Bangkok Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Krabi.

AirAsia’s Malaysian unit recently launched flights from Kuala Lumpur to U-Tapao, while Bangkok Airways and Kan Air also operate domestic flights from the Pattaya hub.
