Violent floods have ripped through the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan, triggering the evacuation of 1,700 tourists from the UNESCO world heritage site. As informed by a news report in Middle East Eye.

Videos posted on Monday showed brown water careering down the steep cliffs surrounding Petra’s ancient rock-cut Nabatean temple dubbed “the Treasury”, the best-known part of the sprawling, 260-sq-km site. Tourists in raincoats are seen looking bewildered and packing into pick-up trucks as the site’s narrow passages, including the famed Siq, resemble rivers.

A large number of buildings are scattered in a fort surrounded by a 45 km long parapet wall. Diriyah, The City of Earth. begins a new chapter in its history as At-Turaif, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the original home of the Al Saud family, and the seat of governance of the First Saudi State, opens its doors to the public for the first time on the 4th of December 2022. The opening season will include a vibrant public program of events, performances, and activities for all visitors to experience which will celebrate and bring the heritage site and birthplace of the Kingdom to life.

Located in the heart of Diriyah, north-west of the capital Riyadh, At-Turaif is the birthplace of the modern Saudi state founded in 1727 and is regarded as one of the country’s most important heritage sites and a symbol of Saudi identity. For over fifty years, this area served as the principal residence of House Al Saud and the administrative district of Diriyah, the center of a state that spanned the Arabian Peninsula.

Visitors will be able to walk through a vast heritage site of restored mudbrick palaces, mosques, former defensive towers, and curated galleries that tell the definitive story of Saudi Arabia’s formation and the rise of the Saudi dynasty. A beautiful example of the distinct Nadji-style architecture, At-Turaif is one of the most historically significant and architecturally impressive mudbrick settlements in the world.

Open all year round and with no ticket required on weekdays until 4 pm, visitors will be able to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site across a variety of mediums to suit their own interests. From guided tours, offered every 30 minutes in Arabic and English; to Nuzul, an immersive theatre across an entire street of the district bringing to life the people and stories from At-Turaif and the surrounding areas; to watching an Al Ardah performance, a dance of vigor and victory of such traditional and historical importance that it is now recognized as a UNESCO intangible heritage asset – there is something for everyone.

Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO, DGDA, commented: “This opening is an important moment for the Kingdom. It marks the beginning of a new era for “Diriyah. The City of Earth”. At-Turaif is a physical monument to the history of the Saudi nation. It has been preserved over the centuries, and now forms the core of our restoration and enhancement of Diriyah itself, which will once again become a place for cultures across the world to gather. We cannot wait to welcome our visitors to this extraordinary place to experience culture, knowledge, commerce, hospitality, and entertainment once again in a truly unique Saudi way.”

The opening of At-Turaif once again to the public is the jewel in the crown of the $63.2 billion development of Diriyah by DGDA. Aimed at re-establishing Diriyah as a crossroads for humanity and a gathering place for the world, its entirely mudbrick construction and the creation of new cultural, educational, commercial, hospitality and entertainment offerings will help to restore it as a globally connected city where Saudi history is respected, protected, celebrated, and created.

Visitors to At-Turaif during its opening season will also get the chance to visit the newly opened Bujairi Terrace, the highly anticipated culinary district that brings a wealth of carefully curated dining experiences to Diriyah. Here, guests will take a gastronomic journey through several Michelin-star restaurants as well as a number of restaurants that will be opening their first locations outside of their home countries. Additionally, several outlets have never before been seen in Saudi Arabia, providing diners with an assortment of menu options inspired by traditional Saudi and international dishes.

Overlooking the ancient crossroads of culture and trade that is At-Turaif, Bujairi Terrace is organic in its origin, built from the mud, water and straw of Diriyah used in the construction of At-Turaif. It will welcome visitors from all walks of life to once again make Diriyah one of the great gathering places in the world.

Opening to the public on the 4th of December 2022 in parallel with At-Turaif, visitors to Bujairi Terrace will soon be able to reserve a table at one of over 20 restaurants and coffee shops in the district and experience a unique and vibrant mix of interactive entertainment, Saudi artists and musicians that will bring the area to life, immersing diners in the culture and history of Diriyah through live shows and cultural and historic programs.

Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO, DGDA, stated: “The opening of Bujairi Terrace demonstrates tangible progress in the implementation of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, and is an exciting illustration of the far-reaching and ambitious national transformation which we are all honored to contribute to. The exciting mix of local Saudi and internationally renowned restaurants will help ensure Bujairi Terrace lives up to its promise of becoming the Kingdom’s premier fine dining destination.”

Four Michelin-starred restaurants will entice diners with their exquisite menus, including Tatel, Hakkasan, Long Chim and Chez Bruno. Internationally acclaimed Café De L’Esplanade and Chez Bruno are both debuting outside of France for the very first time.

These international restaurants join the broad and carefully curated Saudi-owned offerings of Maiz, Somewhere, Sum + Things and TAKYA. Bringing the Saudi offering to life are the likes of MAIZ, which will offer authentic Saudi food from each of the Kingdom’s 13 provinces, and TAKYA, the first Saudi-owned fine dining restaurant serving Saudi cuisine with a contemporary twist that will capture the heart and tastebuds of diners. These local restaurants will offer their take on traditional flavors and deliver them in a truly unique experience that can only be found in Bujairi Terrace.

Ahead of the official opening on December 4th, DGDA held a special Gala dinner at Bujairi Terrace for a number of World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) delegates who were present in Riyadh for the 22nd WTTC Global Summit.

Uniting a wide range of key industry players, this year’s edition of the WTTC Summit showcased Saudi Arabia’s pioneering efforts to reshape the world’s tourism map in a still-recovering, post-COVID world.  As one of the industry’s largest events, the annual forum aspires to implement travel sustainability on a global scale.

The At-Turaif and Bujairi Terrace opening gala dinner was attended by Ahmed AlKhateeb, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Arnold Donald, Chair of WTTC, Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, Jerry Inzerillo, GCEO of DGDA and a broad list of other high profile industry leaders.

The Taj Mahal, a UNESCO world heritage site, was among the 10 most popular ticketed monuments for domestic visitors in 2021-22, according to a new report released by the Union Ministry of Tourism. While the Mughal-era mausoleum ranked first, the Red Fort and the Qutub Minar — both UNESCO-recognised sites in Delhi — were the second and third most visited sites, respectively, for the period. The over 280-page report titled ‘India Tourism Statistics 2022’ was released on Tuesday by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on World Tourism Day.

The report said due to restrictions related to COVID-19, “the number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India during 2021 decreased to 1.52 million as compared to 2.74 million in 2020, registering a negative growth of 44.5 per cent”.

Sharing data about the footfall at various sites under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the report said the Taj Mahal was the most popular centrally-protected ticketed monument for domestic visitors in 2021-22, while the Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu was the most visited centrally-protected ticketed monument for foreign visitors during the same period.

According to data shared by the report, the Taj Mahal witnessed 3.29 million visitors or 12.65 per cent of the total footfall in 2021-22 for domestic visitors, followed by Red Fort (1.32 million) and Qutub Minar (1.15 million). As per foreign visitors, the Group of Monuments in Mamallapuram saw 0.14 million, followed by the Taj Mahal (0.038 million) and the Tiger -headed Rock cut and two other monuments, Saluvankuppam, (0.025 million), the report said, quoting ASI data.

In 2021-22, the total number of domestic visitors stood at 2,60,46,891, while the corresponding figure in 2020-21 was 1,31,53,076, marking a 98 per cent on-year growth. The total number of foreign visitors for 2021-22 was 3,18,673, declining 23.4 per cent on year from 4,15,859 in 2020-21, according to the data.

There are 3,693 heritage sites in India protected by the ASI. Many of these are UNECSO world heritage sites such as the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, Qutub Minar and the Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi and the ruins of the ancient Nalanda university in Bihar. In 2020, ASI sites were shut for over four months due to COVID-19 and reopened in July with safety protocols in place.

Ellora Caves, the UNESCO world heritage site in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district, will become the first monument in the country to have a hydraulic lift.

Situated around 30 km from Aurangabad city, in Maharashtra Ellora is the one of the largest rock-cut temple complexes in the world. These 34 monasteries and temples, extending over more than 2 km, were dug side by side in the wall of a high basalt cliff. Ellora, with its uninterrupted sequence of monuments dating from A.D. 600 to 1000, brings the civilization of ancient India to life.

Not only is the Ellora complex a unique artistic creation and a technological exploit but, with its sanctuaries devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, it illustrates the spirit of tolerance that was characteristic of ancient India.

The management of the Ellora Caves is carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), while the buffer zones are jointly managed by the ASI, the Forest Department, and the Government of Maharashtra. The ASI has been undertaking several projects to make Ellora Caves, more tourist friendly.

The Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List making it Thailand’s sixth World Heritage Site.

The decision to add Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex was made at the World Heritage Committee’s 44th  session, held online and chaired from Fuzhou, China. The session will continue through to 31 July 2021.

Located inside Thailand’s largest national park of the same name, Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex covers 464,000 hectares and spans across the three provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, and Ratchaburi.

It is the third natural heritage site after Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries was listed in 1991 and Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex in 2005.

UNESCO describes Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex as rich in biodiversity with semi-evergreen/dry evergreen, moist evergreen and some mixed deciduous forest, montane forest, and deciduous dipterocarp forest. The area has abundant birdlife, including several globally threatened species, and is home to the critically endangered Siamese Crocodile, the endangered Asiatic Wild Dog and several other vulnerable wildlife species. There are also eight resident cat species, including the endangered Tiger and Fishing Cat, the vulnerable Clouded Leopard and Marbled Cat, the Jungle Cat, and Leopard Cat.

Thailand’s other three World Heritage List locations are cultural heritage sites; these being Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, Historic City of Ayutthaya, and the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns.

The Old City of Jerusalem has become more accessible for both wheelchair users and the visually impaired, thanks to improved infrastructure and audio apps to help residents and visitors better navigate the small streets and alleyways.

The accessibility of the city is an innovative and ground-breaking project that enables wheelchair bound residents and visitors to enjoy the historic and cultural wealth of the city. Among other things, four kilometres of streets in the Muslim, Armenian and Christian quarters have been adapted, and about two kilometres of handrails have been installed alongside staircases.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most visited place in Israel with about 10 million visitors each year.

The accessibility of the alleys is intended to ease the congestion in the main streets and to enable wheelchair users, the users of freight carts (including strollers), and other handicapped people, to visit the city’s tourist attractions with greater ease.

The East Jerusalem Development Company has also produced a printed accessibility orientation map along with a dedicated application in eight languages that enables real-time navigation between the alleys and sites.

In addition, the Centre for the Blind in Israel has developed an app that has made Jerusalem accessible to the blind with special audio tours. The Tower of David Museum, located at the gateway to the Old City, has made its flagship night show accessible to the blind and visually impaired with a descriptive audio accompaniment – the first of its kind in Israel.

The accessibility project has been funded by the Jerusalem and Heritage Ministry and the Jerusalem Development Authority, together with the Ministry of Tourism, the Accessibility Department of the Jerusalem Municipality, the National Social Security Agency and the Israel Antiquities Authority, carried out by the East Jerusalem Development Company.

The Walled City of Jaipur, known for its iconic architectural legacy and vibrant culture, on 6 July made its entry into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC), underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from 30 June to 10 July, examined the nomination of the Walled City of Jaipur for inclusion in the World Heritage list.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) had inspected the city in 2018, post its nomination. The WHC in Baku examined the nomination and inscribed it in UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The historic walled city of Jaipur in Rajasthan was founded in 1727 AD under the patronage of Sawai Jai Singh II. It serves as the capital city of the culturally-rich state of Rajasthan.

“The city was proposed to be nominated for its value of being an exemplary development in town planning and architecture that demonstrates an amalgamation and important exchange of ideas in the late medieval period. In town planning, it shows an interchange of ancient Hindu, Mughal and contemporary Western ideas that resulted in the form of the city,” UNESCO Office in New Delhi had earlier said.

The World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives of 21 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention who meet annually. The Committee is in charge of implementing the Convention. To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Historians, archaeologists and locals were concerned that the multi-billion airport that is planned to be built near the famous Inca citadel.

Bulldozers have started clearing the land for the airport in Chinchero, which is the gateway to the Sacred Valley in Peru. Those who were against the project feared that the construction will cause structural damage to the ancient city and its surrounding environment.

Nearly 6,000 people have signed the petition calling on Peruvian President Martin Vizcarrato reconsider the project.

Currently, most visitors to Machu Picchu arrive at Cusco airport and ride a train or bus or embark on the four-day Inca Trail to reach the site. Cusco airport has only one runway and is limited to handling stopover flights from Peru’s capital, Lima, and nearby cities such as La Paz, Bolivia. But the new airport in Chinchero will be open to larger planes on international routes across Latin America and the US.

The project was first announced in 2012 by Peru’s former president Ollanta Humala and the government plans to complete the airport by 2023.

More than 1.5 million tourists visited Machu Picchu in 2018, which is almost double the limit recommended by UNESCO.

“The airport planned to be built in Chinchero, Cusco, endangers the conservation of one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the world. The airport will affect the integrity of a complex Inca landscape and will cause irreparable damage due to noise, traffic and uncontrolled urbanisation,” wrote Natalia Majluf, a Peruvian art historian at Cambridge University who organised a petition against the development.

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Things to do

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Things to do

Galle is an ancient coastal city, with old fortifications and charming atmosphere, now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nestled on the golden sandy crescent on the south coast (10 minutes away from the Galle Fort) is Amari Galle. The hotel is conveniently located along the main Colombo-Galle Road with a travel time of two and a half hours from Sri Lanka’s international airport in Colombo.

Below are some of the best places to discover in the area:

The Galle Fort

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Galle Fort

Built in 1588 by the Portuguese (and fortified by the Dutch), the Galle Fort is a magnificent structure with architectural, archaeological and historical importance. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic attractions which draws tourists from around the world. Within its walls are enchanting old buildings, markets, restaurants, cafés and shops lined on cobblestone streets.

Flag Rock

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Flag Rock

History states that Flag Rock used to have a lighthouse that would warn incoming sailors of the dangerous rocks. Today, adventure seekers leap into the water from the rocks, while vendors offer street food with local spices. Atop the rocks, those who dare are rewarded with spectacular views of the sea. On evenings, romantic strolls on the nearby Pedlar Street are recommended.

Old Dutch Market

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Old Dutch Market

The Old Dutch Market, one of the busiest places in the country, is a staple destination that provides the freshest local produce. For three centuries, the marketplace has been the centre of trading for tropical fruits, spices and the freshest catch from the sea.

If you’re looking for an authentic local immersion and souvenirs to bring home, this is the place to be.

Sea Turtle Hatchery

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Sea turtles

The Sea Turtle Hatchery offers the opportunity for visitors to take part in sustainable activity for a good cause. The farm works with local guides who educate visitors about the sea turtles, from the moment they hatch to nurturing them and releasing them into the sea.

There are five varieties of Sea Turtles found in Sri Lanka: Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill and Leatherhead — and all of the major nesting habitats are in the Galle area, so this locally-owned sanctuary is crucial for the whole country’s species.

Cycling tours

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Cycling tours

One of the best ways to get around town is through cycling tours led by local guides. It allows travellers to get some exercise while biking beside lagoons, mangroves and tropical palms.

On the way, travellers can meet locals in the village or find inner peace by visiting a Buddhist temple. Pedalling around town also opens up chances for first-hand experiences of the local industries such as crab-catching and rope-making.

National Maritime Museum

Amari Galle Sri Lanka - Maritime Museum

History and marine life converge at the National Maritime Museum in Galle. It’s a museum built in the late 17th century and was originally part of the main gateway to the Fort. Inside the museum are shipwrecks and other mysterious marine artefacts. There are boats, maps, smoking pipes, barrels, artillery guns and sailor shoes. Some of the antiques date back to nearly 800 years old.

Commanding a breathtaking view from the top floor, this two-bedroom suite includes a dining area, a living room and a balcony terrace with private plunge pool.

Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel

Petra’s popular Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel has officially reopened following the completion of an extensive renovation and enhancement project.

Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel is located 10 minutes from the entrance to Petra — a 2,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’. The hotel, which is an attraction by itself, is perched at an elevation of 1,400 metres and offers views of the valley, making it an ideal and inspirational base for discovering the ancient archaeological landscapes nearby.

The hotel features an indoor lap pool adorned with Romanesque pillars, while a function room with an adjoining outdoor terrace caters to bespoke meetings, weddings and incentives. Guests can also dine at Al Madafa, an atmospheric restaurant serving Jordanian specialities and international dishes, with ingredients and organic products sourced from local suppliers.

Mövenpick Nabatean Castle Hotel

Highlights of the renovation include 90 contemporary rooms decorated in natural tones, featuring showers and tile flooring that create a fortress-style hotel, which is located in the rolling hills of the Rift Valley, close to Jordan’s most visited attraction – the ancient city of Petra, also known as the ‘Red Rose City’.

Also part of the renovation, a new Bedouin tent has been built where traditional Jordanian cuisine and Arabic coffee are served while the revised layout at the Nadeem Bar & Terrace promises impressive views of Mount Aroun, the area’s highest peak. In addition, the venue’s décor has been enriched with heritage-inspired art, enhancing its appeal as the best destination to visit when in Petra.

Finally, the property has also introduced new tailor-made experiences such as mountain-view bonfires, designed for special occasions or small family gatherings.

Myanmar’s government is preparing a UNESCO World Heritage bid for Mrauk-U, the ancient Arkanese capital in Rakhine state.

The Irrawaddy reports that the proposal will be submitted by September next year, and will cover the ancient city’s remains and approximately 380 temples.

From the 15th to the late 19th centuries, Mrauk-U was the seat of Arakanese kingdom which controlled parts of modern day Myanmar and Bangladesh. The site is located on the Kaladan River, 60km from Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine state. A new airport is also being considered to allow visitors to access Mrauk-U more easily.

This is one of a series of UNESCO applications being planning my Myanmar, with other sites including Bagan, the Shwedagon Pagoda and Lake Inle also in line for World Heritage status.

The country received its first ever UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, when the three ancient Pyu cities were inscribed on the global list.

The ancient capital of the Chenla Empire, which flourished in Cambodia’s pre-Angkor period up until the early 7th Century, has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Sambor Prei Kuk, which literally means “the temple in the richness of the forest” in Khmer, is believed to be the site of Ishanapura, the capital of an ancient empire which one covered modern day Cambodia and the Mekong Delta. Located in Kampong Thom Province, 176km east of Angkor, this walled city covers an area of 25km² and features numerous temples.

In inscribing Sambor Prei Kuk on the World Heritage list, UNESCO said that the site’s temples are “unique specimens of their genre in Southeast Asia”.

Sambor Prei Kuk is one of five sites in East Asia added to the UNESCO World Heritage list following the conservation body’s latest review. In China, the small island of Kulangsu in the Chiu-lung River, off the coast of Xiamen, has been recognised for its former status as an international settlement, while the “sacred” Japanese island of Okinoshima, with its ancient shrines, has also been added to the list.

Kulangsu

In addition, two of Asia’s natural landscapes were recognised by UNESCO; Mongolia’s Daurian steppe region, which straddles the country’s border with Russia, and Qinghai Hoh Xil in western China, which forms part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau – the largest and highest plateau in the world.

Following the latest round of inscriptions, Cambodia has three UNESCO World Heritage sites: Angkor, Preah Vihear and Sambor Prei Kuk. China now has 52 sites on the list – second only to Italy, which has 53.

As well as providing additional funding and support for conservation, UNESCO listings can often lead to significant increases in tourism arrivals.

Halong Bay, the famous UNESCO World Heritage site in Vietnam, will soon become an international golf destination, following the development of a new course overlooking the limestone karst-studded bay.

Hanoi-based FLC Group has employed US-based golf course design company, Schmidt-Curley, to create the new 18-hole, par-71 course FLC Golf Links Halong Bay. The development will be accompanied by a hotel, villas and a convention centre.

Designer Brian Curley said the Halong Bay course would be “a world-class destination resort”.

“If you tell someone – golfer or non-golfer – there are 10 places in the world you must visit for the views, this would be one of them. Throw in a year-round resort with golf and there’s no doubt this will be on every golfer’s wish-list,” he commented.

Golfers will be offered spectacular views from the FLC Golf Links Halong Bay
Golfers will be offered spectacular views from the FLC Golf Links Halong Bay

The course will be measure 6,800 yards from the “tips” and 6,200-6,300 yards from the white tees, which is relatively short by modern standards. There are five par-three holes, three of which offer 180-degree views over Halong Bay. According to Curley, two of the holes (the eighth and 12th) are comparable to the famous seventh at Pebble Beach.

Curley also reassured novice golfers that the course would be “eminently playable”.

“We have deliberately created sufficient width to make it a ‘find-your-ball course’,” he explained. “As a resort course, we don’t want players to get beaten up, although it won’t be a pushover either.”

He admitted however, that construction has been difficult. “The terrain means there is some disconnect between holes, which may not please purists, but the views are so spectacular it’s not going to be an issue.”

FLC Golf Links Halong Bay is expected to open in the third quarter 2017.

Plans have been revealed for a new rail service connecting Delhi with the UNESCO-listed Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that the new “Kaziranga Express” has been proposed by Rajen Gobain, India’s Minister of State for Railways, who hails from Assam.

The line, which would cover more than 2,000km, would operate along similar lines as the Tiger Express services that have recently been introduced between Delhi with Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks in Madhya Pradesh.

Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s largest population of single-horned rhinoceroses, along with tigers, elephants and other species.

Anurag Singh, managing director of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), said that a report on the project is likely to be finalised this month.

“We are working on an itinerary. We need to work on a model which we can sustain for a long time,” he was quoted saying by the PTI.

This itinerary could also incorporate the Kamakhya Temple, Manas National Park and Assam’s tea plantations. Like the Tiger Express services, passengers would be offered full packages including train travel, accommodation, meals, transfers and safari tours.

The Indonesian government is considering plans to severely limit the number of people it allows to visit the UNESCO-listed temple if Borobudur.

Under drastic new rules, only 15 people would be allowed to climb the 9th Century Javanese temple at any one time.

An official with the country’s Ministry of Education & Culture said they were concerned about the impact that rising tourist numbers were having at Borobudur. At present, an unlimited number of visitors – sometimes into the hundreds – are permitted to scale the monument at the same time.

The suggested figure of 15 is reportedly based on research conducted by experts about the structural capacity of the monument. Concerns have also been raised about litter in the area and a shortage of security staff.

Located in Central Java, Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple.

The famous Japanese Bridge in Hoi An will be completely dismantled in an effort to save the 400-year-old icon from ruin.

Thanh Nien News reports that the ornate covered bridge, which was built by Japanese traders in the 17th Century, is becoming weak due to recent flooding and the weight of the estimated 4,000 visitors who cross it each day.

Now, in an effort to strengthen the bridge, it will be dismantled piece-by-piece and each individual component restored or replaced as necessary.

Japanese cultural experts, who will provide technical advice on the project, said that the bridge can be repaired without affecting its appearance. Members of the Vietnam Culture Heritage Association have also suggested that the number of visitors on the bridge should be limited in future to prevent further damage.

Also known as the ‘Bridge Pagoda’, the historic structure stretches 18 metres across a canal in the UNESCO-listed centre of Hoi An. A Vietnamese icon, it appears on the country’s VND20,000 notes.

Laos is preparing to submit an application to UNESCO for the Plain of Jars to be inscribed on the World Heritage list.

The Vientiane Times reports that country’s Ministry of Information, Culture & Tourism recently held a meeting to discuss the plan, with the aim of submitting its nomination next year.

According to Dr Bounthieng Siripaphanh, director general of the ministry’s Heritage Department, the application has been planned for a long time.

“Preparation for the Plain of Jars World Heritage nomination project commenced in 1998 and handbooks were published in 2009. Progress has been steady and persistent because we have faced many difficulties along the way,” Dr Bounthieng was quoted saying. “The challenge now is to find enough money to implement it and ensure that Laos has sufficient technical expertise.

“Through good implementation and management the Plain of Jars will become an even more important heritage tourism site for domestic and foreign visitors,” Dr Bounthieng added.

The Plain of Jars features a series of approximately 2,000 stone “jars”, thought to be up to 3,000 years old. The exact purpose of the jars remains a mystery, with theories ranging from them being containers for rice wine, to being used to collect rainwater for long-distance trade caravans.

If the nomination is accepted, the Plain of Jars would become Laos’ third UNESCO World Heritage site, following the town of Luang Prabang and the cultural site of Vat Phou, Champasak province.

The UN has agreed to send peacekeepers to Syria, in an effort to protect the country’s World Heritage sites from Islamic State.

The Guardian reports that Italy proposed the move, following the destruction of ancient Roman sites including Palmyra. The Italian Culture Minister, Dario Franceschini, said that 53 countries, as well as permanent members of the UN Security Council, had voted in favour of the idea.

“Faced with IS terrorist attacks and the terrible images of Palmyra, the international community cannot stand back and watch,” Franceschini was quoted saying.

While UNESCO has made several strong-worded statements on the destruction of World Heritage sites by IS, it has been unable to stop the vandalism. From May 2015 until now, IS militants have destroyed several key parts of the 3,000 year-old Palmyra complex. UNESCO has vowed however, to work with the International Criminal Court “to make sure that the perpetrators of the destruction are tried and punished”.

Islamic militants have also been responsible for the destruction of World Heritage sites in Timbuktu, northern Mali.

Nearly one in three natural World Heritage Sites are being put at risk by the mining and fossil fuel industries, a WWF report has revealed.

According to the ‘Safeguarding Outstanding Natural Value’ report, which was published this week by WWF, Aviva Investors and Investec Asset Management, 31% of natural World Heritage Sites, including coral reefs, national parks and game reserves, are now at risk, up from 24% last year.

Among those listed at risk are Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Lake Malawi National Park, Tanzania’s Selous Reserve and Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park.

“Almost a third of all natural World Heritage Sites has the threat of oil, gas and mining exploration hanging over it. This threat rises to an alarming 61% in Africa. Natural World Heritage Sites are places of outstanding natural value… however more sites are now in areas that could be opened up to the extraction of oil, gas and mining for minerals and ores,” the report states.

The WWF is calling for the industries to make “no go” and “no impact” commitments for natural World Heritage Sites, and for companies to disclose existing or intended activity within or close to these areas.

“Some of the world’s most treasured places are threatened by destructive industrial activities that imperil the very values for which they have been granted the highest level of international recognition: outstanding natural value,” said WWF UK’s chief executive, David Nussbaum.

“Protecting these iconic places is not only important in terms of their environmental worth; it is crucial for the livelihoods and future of the people who depend on them.”

The report follows the recent announcement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to commit the world to sustainable development.

At least two British tourists have been killed in an accident on a UNESCO World Heritage-listed train in northern India.

The incident occurred on a stretch of the Kalka-Shimla Railway, which runs through the mountains from Haryana to Himachal Pradesh. India’s Economic Times reports that the train had been privately booked by a British group and had 37 tourists onboard.

But it somehow derailed, killing two female tourists instantly and injuring 10 other people. The Indian media reported that one of the injured tourists died later in hospital, but this has not been confirmed.

The cause of the accident is not clear, but it has been suggested that the four-carriage train was travelling too quickly, causing it to derail on a bend. An inquiry has been ordered.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built by the British in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as a means of travelling to Shimla, the British summer capital in India. The line is known for its dramatic views is it climbs through the mountains.

A series of historic and cultural sites in Asia have been protected by UNESCO, following the latest round of additions to the global World Heritage list.

Five sites in China, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore and South Korea were inscribed on the UNESCO list during the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Germany.

In China, the Tusi Sites of Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou provinces were selected due to their importance in tracing a group of ethnic minorities who lived separately across a range of mountainous regions, but adopted a form of central government.

“The sites of Laosicheng, Tangya and Hailongtun Fortress that make up the site bear exceptional testimony to this form of governance, which derived from the Chinese civilization of the Yuan and Ming periods,” UNESCO said.

South Korea also won UNESCO recognition for its Baekje Historic Areas, which comprise eight archaeological sites that feature fortresses, royal tombs and other ancient buildings, and in Mongolia, the Great Burkhan Khaldun Mountain was recognised for its beauty and cultural significance. The site is believed to be the birthplace and burial site of Genghis Khan.

The sites Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution have also been listed, with 11 properties said to “bear testimony to the rapid industrialisation of the country from the middle of the 19th Century to the early 20th Century”.

Great Burkhan Khaldun Mountain

But perhaps the most significant inclusion was that of the Botanic Gardens in Singapore. Founded by the British in 1859, the Botanical Gardens have now become Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage site.

In making its judgement, UNESCO said the gardens had been an “important centre for science, research and plant conservation… in Southeast Asia since 1875.” It becomes only the third botanic gardens on the UNESCO list, following Orto botanico di Padova in Italy and the UK’s Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

In contrast to Singapore, China now has the second highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world, with 48. Italy (51) has the most. Following the latest round of inscriptions, Japan now has 19 UNESCO World Heritage sites, South Korea 12 and Mongolia four.

UNESCO recognition not only ensures the preservation of historic sites, but also provides a potential tourism boost for the areas.

Investors are eying Jeddah’s downtown historical area due to the high turnout of visitors during Ramadan and summer season. Several businessmen have reportedly been considering opening cafes and restaurants following successful run of festivals and events held in the area. Jeddah’s summer festival attracted more than 750,000 guests this year.

The festivals, which had been organized by the Jeddah Municipality, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) and Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), played a vital role in reviving tourism in the area, recently dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both local and foreign tourists frequented the area, which needs to be made more family-friendly, according to experts.

“Downtown Jeddah became a magnet for many of the city’s residents this year, encouraging local businessmen to open eateries that match the historical style of the area,” said Ali Salme, a Saudi businessman with several investments in the tourism sector, as quoted in Arab News.

For many Jeddah residents, the area helps foster business activity with pilgrims, who bring with them items from their home countries to sell. Umrah and Haj pilgrims also hunt for souvenirs and gifts to take back home to their loved ones despite the fact that most of these items are available locally. Pilgrims spend an estimated SAR800 million on gold and SAR8 billion on gifts annually.

Twenty new cultural and natural sites have been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List for this year.

The list includes several sites in Europe, Asia, Middle East and South America mainly covering sites of cultural interest.

In total the UNESCO World Heritage List now includes 1,001 sites with 1, 627 sites from 171 countries currently in the tentative list.

Europe

In Europe the additions include the Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey in Germany, the only standing sculpture from the Carolingian era between 822 and 855AD, as is a cave at the Pont d’Arc in France that has prehistoric drawings on a limestone plateau.

Five wine-growing areas of Langhe and Monferrato in Piedmont, Italy were also added as well as the 1920s-built Van Nellefabriek factory in Rotterdam.

The Turkish town of Cumalikizik is on the list

Middle East/Africa

Further east there were two Turkey entries: the eight sites that make up the city of Bursa and nearby Cumalikizik in recognition as the area of the birth of the Ottoman Empire, and the Pergamon acropolis and surrounding area.

The ‘city under a city’ caves that sit underneath the cities of Maresha and Bet Gurvin in Israel are also on the list as well as the Erbil Citadel in Iraq.

Historic Jeddah and the Gate to Makkah in Saudi Arabia is also now on the list as is the Battir area in southern Jerusalem and the mud brick city of Shahr-I Sokhta in Iran.

The only natural site, which also happened to be the only site in Africa added, is the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Americas

There was only one addition from the USA, in the form of the earthworks at Poverty Point in the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Further south the Qhapaq Nan road system that covers 30,000 kilometres on the peaks of the Andes through Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colomia, Ecuador and Peru was added to the list.

Myanmar’s heritage has received a long-awaited boost after UNESCO inscribed three ancient cities on its World Heritage list.

The country initially applied to have the ancient Pyu Kingdom cities of Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Kestra included on the UNESCO list in 1996, and they were finally added during the recent 38th session of the World Heritage Committee in Doha. They become Myanmar’s first UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The sites, which are collectively inscribed under the title of ‘Pyu Ancient Cities’, include the remains of three brick, walled and moated cities, located in the Irrawaddy River basin.

In approving the new sites, UNESCO said the locations “reflect the Pyu Kingdoms that flourished for over 1,000 years between 200BC and 900AD”. While the archaeological sites have only been partially excavated, remains include palace citadels, burial grounds, Buddhist stupas and early industrial production sites.

The Ancient Pyu people spoke a language closely related to Myanmar, and stone inscriptions found in some of their monuments provide the only remaining trace of this language.

The Pyu Kingdom was eventually absorbed into the Bagan Kingdom, but the UNESCO recognition will help preserve the ancient cities, as well as providing a tourism boost to the region.

Myanmar is also aiming to inscribe the ancient city of Bagan on the UNESCO list.

A new airport is being developed in China to boost tourism at Wulingyuan, which was made famous as the inspiration for the movie Avatar.

The new Lotus International Airport will serve the city of Zhangjiajie, in central China’s Hunan province, which is the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan Scenic & Historic Interest Area.

Wulingyuan forms part of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which was named as China’s first national forest park in 1982. Its soaring limestone karsts and lush jungle was cited by Hollywood director James Cameron as the basis for the fictional world of Pandora in his 2009 movie.

Since Avatar was released, Wulingyuan has experience a surge in tourism numbers, and authorities in Hunan have now decided to develop a new international airport to serve this rising traffic.

Set to open in 2015, the new Lotus International Airport will cover almost 60,000m² and be able to handle up to five million passengers a year. It is being developed at a cost of approximately CNY535 million (US$87m).

A two-member team from UNESCO kicked off their four-day visit at Dubai Creek – visiting the historic Al Fahidi Area, as reported by Gulf News. Al Fahidi area is one of the proposed UNESCO proposed Heritage Sites, as it offers visitors a glimpse into old Dubai The area of Al Fahidi historical neighbourhood was built in 1859 and was famous for signature wind towers creating an iconic skyline for Dubai. Even today, the wind towers are regarded as a cultural icon of the city.

Dubai Municipality has been proposing Dubai Creek as a World UNESCO Heritage Site since January 2012, and expects the final announcement to be made by June 2014. The two-member delegate team from Unesco will remain in Dubai until Thursday, and will be shown around the rest of Dubai Creek’s 16 heritage sites, which includes Shaikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, Dubai Heritage and Diving Village, and the Gold Souq.

After renovation and preservation, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is now a tourist village with a museum, a cultural centre, restaurants and an art gallery. The old Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood district gives a glimpse of old Dubai.

The integrity factor measures how much of the cultural heritage has been preserved with all its parts and attributes, while its authenticity is determined by the shape, design, building materials, usage, traditions, spirit and the feeling of the place. The management criteria evaluates the efforts done by the country to protect the country.

In 2013, the world heritage list included 981 sites within 160 countries.

UNESCO has inscribed Japan’s Mount Fuji on its World Heritage List.

The 3,776-metre volcano and its surrounding area were given the protected status during the 37th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee (WHC), which is currently being held in Phnom Penh.

According to UNESCO, ‘Fujisan, Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration’ was been added to the list due to its importance to Japanese culture, including art and poetry.

The inscribed area consists of 25 sites which, according to the UN, “reflect the essence of Fujisan’s sacred landscape”. These include pilgrimmage routes and shrines on the mountain’s upper slopes, as well as lodging houses, lakes, springs and waterfalls.

It is joined on the list by two sites in China: the Tianshan Mountains in the northwest region of Xinjiang and Honghe Hani rice terraces in Yunnan province.

The Xinjiang Tianshan heritage area is a vast site covering more than 606,000 hectares across in the Tianshan Mountains, which mark the border between Western China and Central Asia. Four key components — Tomur, Kalajun-Kuerdening, Bayinbukuke and Bogda — have been protected due to their “unique physical geographic features and scenically beautiful areas”, according to UNESCO. The site also extends into the Taklimakan Desert – one of the world’s highest deserts.

The ‘Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces’ covers 16,603 hectares in southern Yunnan, and features the rice terracing which descends down the slopes of the Ailao Mountains to the banks of the Hong River. It was developed by the Hani people over the past 1,300 years.

Meanwhile in India, the Hill Forts of Rajasthan includes six forts in Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Jhalawar, Jaipur and Jaisalmer. Built between the 8th to the 18th centuries, the forts are huge, with some of the structures measure up to 20km in circumference, and containing temples and other sacred buildings.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee (WHC) is meeting in Phnom Penh until 27 June.

Tourism Tasmania has joined forces with Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar, to deliver a new marketing campaign based around the 30th anniversary of the island’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage area.

The new, AU$300,000 (US$307,000) joint campaign was launched yesterday morning at Hobart’s Henry Jones Art Hotel by Tasmania’s Minister for Tourism, Scott Bacon, Jetstar Australia’s CEO, David Hall, and Tourism Tasmania CEO, John Fitzgerald. Based around a new microsite, jetstartasmania.com, the marketing drive includes special airfares and travel itineraries, encouraging Australians to take short trips to explore Tasmania’s wilderness.

“We are delighted to partner with Tourism Tasmania to celebrate and promote Tasmania’s natural wonders and I am sure this new campaign will attract even more visitors to the state,” said Hall.

Other Jetstar promotional activities will include a Tasmanian editorial feature in the April issue of Jetstar Magazine and Tasmanian-themed mailers distributed to Jetstar’s customers and via the hooroo.com website. The airline will also create a series of social media competitions.

“Access to Tasmania is an integral part of our island lifestyle. It is essential not only to the tourism industry but the broader economy,” said Fitzgerald. “With our World Heritage Wilderness spanning approximately one fifth of the island, from the southwest tip, across the west and up to Cradle Mountain, the joint marketing campaign with Jetstar will support regional tourism activity and showcase the very best aspects of our natural landscape.”
