Holland America Line has opened cruise bookings for its 2024-2025 West Coast season from San Diego, California, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sailings from these two North American homeports allow guests to see the world from their doorstep, without international air or by taking an easy flight from Canada.

Travelers can set out from the West Coast to explore the vibrant cultures of MexicoHawaii‘s aloha spirit, the charming seaside escapes of the Pacific Coast and the famed Panama Canal on five ships across 42 cruises. Sailings are roundtrip from San Diego, roundtrip from Vancouver, or begin or end in either of the two ports.

Holland America Line continues to cultivate our North America homeport cruises to offer a diverse range of destinations without the need for long-haul air,” said Beth BodensteinerHolland America Line’s chief commercial officer. “Our West Coast departures are a rich collection of close-to-home itineraries, and by offering the ability to book back-to-back cruises in different regions our guests can check off more of their must-do travel experiences in one vacation.”

This season, Holland America Line is featuring more Panama Canal Collectors’ Voyages that begin with a Hawaii cruise and expand the canal transit experience to the eastern Caribbean. Many of the other cruises also can be extended into Collectors’ Voyages to create the ultimate exploration with more economical fares than booking the cruises individually. Emirates and Air Canada have announced the launch of their codeshare cooperation. The new partnership will allow customers of the carriers to enjoy seamless connectivity to 46 markets spanning three continents, including to destinations across the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.

Beginning today, codeshare tickets will be available for sale to 35 markets for travel effective December 1 with 11 additional markets to be added pending final regulatory approval, and the potential for more markets to be included beyond that. Tickets are available via the carriers’ websites at emirates.com and aircanada.com as well as via major GDS systems and travel agencies.

Tim Clark, president Emirates Airline said: “We are delighted to establish a partnership with Air Canada, to expand our reach into more points in North America. Partnering with Canada’s flag carrier enables us to offer customers seamless connectivity when flying to domestic points within Canada via Toronto. Besides the added-value benefits and rewarding experiences that leisure and business travellers of both airlines can look forward to, the partnership allows Air Canada’s customers to travel to destinations across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, thanks to our expansive network via our hub in Dubai.”

“This exciting new partnership with Emirates will allow Air Canada to meaningfully broaden the choice of flight options for our customers. It will create easier connections between Canada and destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. As well, it will allow us to draw more connecting traffic through our Toronto global hub and expand our presence in these dynamic regions where demand for global travel is expected to grow,” said Michael Rousseau, president and chief executive officer at Air Canada.

Emirates customers will be able to book codeshare flights to and from Canadian points beyond Toronto, including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. Air Canada will place its code on routes operated by Emirates from its hub in Dubai, expanding the airline’s reach across the Indian subcontinent and unlocking more destinations, including Colombo, Dhaka, Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

Seamless connectivity will also be enjoyed by Air Canada’s customers travelling to Southeast Asian destinations including Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; the Middle Eastern cities Jeddah and Muscat; as well as destinations in Africa, namely Addis Ababa and Dar Es Salaam.

Coming soon, the airlines will introduce a reciprocal frequent flyer offering, allowing members of Aeroplan and Skywards to earn and redeem points on flights operated by Emirates and Air Canada, respectively. Eligible passengers will also soon be able to take advantage of reciprocal lounge access, along with select benefits for Aeroplan Elite and Skywards members when travelling on the partner airline. Further details and launch dates will be announced at a later date.

BestCities Global Alliance, a community of 12 cities around the world, dedicated to the betterment of international conferences and meetings, believes, naturally, that the right partner is an essential component in planning and development of any MICE event.

Expanding on the philosophy Paul Vallee, MD of BestCities – whose members include Berlin, Bogotá, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Houston, Madrid, Melbourne, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver —  opens up and gives the low down on the importance of partnerships and how to find the right organisation to work and some of the challenges.

Paul Vallee speaking at the China International-Tourism Industry Expo in Guangdong, 2017

Why are partnerships so important?

We seek out partners to be able to do things we wouldn’t be able to on your own, to expand our skillsets, resources, and offerings. That’s how you create something of value. The beauty of a partnership, to me, is working together to complement one another and to build something creative and fresh that one may not have otherwise been able to do. That’s the primary advantage and the purpose of partnering. BestCities as an alliance has built its foundations on partnerships and works to help destinations and associations identify partnerships that would work for them.

Berlin Cathedral, Berlin

How can an organisation find the right partner for them?

Finding the right partner in association work is no different to finding a personal relationship or partner. You have to consider your association’s needs and areas of strength, using that as a basis to define where the best fit lies. What is it that will make you as an organisation prosper?

The best way to identify a suitable partner is to find those who are complimentary to what it is that you are doing. It’s not about the similarities, it’s the differences that organisations may have that can make the partnership flourish – meaning that even the more unconventional pairings shouldn’t be ruled out when considering a partnership.

When an association is considering a partnership, they need to find a party that are willing to put in an equal amount of effort – which takes shape in various forms, from money to time, as well as resources, knowledge and man power.

Bogotá, Colombia
Bogotá, Colombia

What are the key benefits of a partnership?

The key elements where partnerships can benefit an organisation are, like anything in business, improving the bottom line, whether it’s financial or otherwise, increasing sales and enhancing reputation. Those benefits can be reaped through:

  • Knowledge sharing; sharing of practises, skillsets and expertise across industry/destination/association.
  • Efficient use of resources; using partners to save time and combine forces reduces and prevents redundant work that you can do by finding a like-minded partner.
  • Brand association; partnering up with an organisation that already has an existing strong brand reputation in either your own market or another market you want to break into is critical.
Cape Town, South Africa

What’s an example of an effective partnership that you have observed?

One that I have overseen and have been closest to would be between BestCities and ICCA, because while we exist in the same sphere, we are not exactly the same. We work together with ICCA on various programmes that give back to the industry, such as the recognition programme and Incredible Impacts. We’re a business and a global alliance, whereas they are an association that works in education and holding conferences. They offer areas of skills and expertise that we don’t have and vice versa.

“Successful outcomes for all parties and a path to that success”

The foundation of any partnership is to establish what it is you’re hoping to achieve, what does success look like, and how you plan to deliver it. That’s the basis of what a successful partnership is; identifying successful outcomes for all parties and a path to that success. In the case of BestCities and ICCA, our idea of success was to recognise associations that are doing outstanding work and legacy development to support associations and collectively build our reputation in the industry overall.

Tokyo, Japan

What common challenges do associations need to overcome in partnerships?

There are definitely challenges that can arise when establishing a partnership. One thing to consider is that ‘no partner is more important that the other’. Regardless of the scale of the organisation, its key to avoid a hierarchal partnership, as each organisation involved should be bringing an equal amount of value to the collaboration. Another potential challenge is being able to agree upon and streamline the common goal and objective to work towards. You’ve got to be tolerant, you’ve got to be flexible, you’ve got to trust one another and recognise that each partner has strengths and weaknesses – understanding and overcoming cultural or operational differences.

“You have to have champions”

Consider your expectations. One cannot expect the other partner to commit to doing something that you would not do yourself. You have to establish clear direction as partners and agreeing what success looks like in terms of the partnership itself and how it impacts all parties involved. Finally, you have to have champions who are able to look outwardly, as opposed to the typical scenario where associations can be very internally focused. Establishing a partnership adds another layer to the association and the benefits of this should be communicated and shared.

Melbourne, Australia

Where do you see the future of collaboration and partnership with associations going and BestCities’ role within that?

When associations and destinations find common ground, great things can happen. For example, an association that specialises in the eradication of a disease will find common ground from destinations that wants to improve the health of the citizens. Or for instance, an association whose purpose is to reduce child poverty is really no different to a destination who wants to see their young people survive and thrive.

“Inspire associations to look outwards”

What we’re moving towards is associations taking advantage of the benefits of collaboration and partnership in refreshing new ways, using these to extend offers and working towards a better future that benefits all. That’s a partnership to me.

A key element of BestCities’ mission is to inspire associations to look outwards, beyond your own organisations, industries and existing skillsets, learning from other associations, destinations and industries to enhance each other’s abilities and enrich our industry.

Vancouver, Canada

How does BestCities decide on which destinations to join its partnership?

There are key criteria for the Alliance when considering new destinations joining the partnership. Among many things, we consider destinations that have demonstrated leadership in working towards joint goals, being accountable for results, having open and honest communications and thinking long term.

We look for partners that demonstrate a track record in partnering and collaboration, with a compelling reputation, which adds value to the Alliance through everything from cultural diversity, geographic balance and client reach. Furthermore, we look for general compatibility – from agreement to subscribe to BestCities commitments and Code of Ethics, to destination appeal, positive environmental reputation, cultural sensitivity and political stability.

Avation PLC’s first aeroplane, a 777-300ER (Extended Range), was the newest addition to the fleet of Philippine Airlines (PAL).

This delivery has increased the Southeast Asia-based flag carrier’s 777-300ER aircraft count to 10, and also marks the first twin-aisle delivery for the leasing company of Boeing. PAL recently received its ninth 777-300ER directly from the aviation technology firm and will use both planes on its trans-Pacific flights immediately.

Jeff Chatfield, Avation PLC executive chairman, shared, ‘We are pleased our first twin-aisle delivery is a 777-300ER, the marquee aircraft in its class. We are confident this will both complement our regional and single-aisle fleet and will prove helpful to our growth as a full-service commercial aircraft lessor.’

‘The new aircraft will serve our long-haul operations,’ remarked Jaime Bautista, PAL president & chief operating officer. ‘While we already have eight 777s serving the West Coast, the incoming units will also augment other flights between the Philippines and North America.’

Bautista added that PAL’s 777 aeroplanes are vital to its long-haul operations. ‘These 777s have the range, the operational capability and the ability to enhance the total passenger travel experience and in-flight service delivery,’ he said. ‘These aircraft help PAL to keep up with other full-service carriers along the route.’

As the most successful twin-engine, long-haul aircraft in current history, the 777-300ER is equipped with the world’s most powerful GE90-115B commercial jet engine. It can seat up to 386 passengers in a three-class configuration with a maximum range of 14,490 km.

PAL will fly the 777-300ER directly from Boeing’s factory at Everett, Washington to Vancouver, British Columbia, where the aeroplanes will enter revenue service to Manila.

‘Boeing and PAL have been strong partners for decades, and it is a special occasion as we deliver their 10th 777-300ER,’ said Dinesh Keskar, Boeing Commercial Airplanes senior vice president for Asia Pacific & India sales. ‘The 777 continues to outperform by all measures, providing exceptional value to our airline and leasing customers. There is no better testament to this than PAL’s confidence in putting its new 777-300 directly into service with its flight from Vancouver to Manila.’

A commercial passenger aircraft leasing company based in the United Kingdom, Avation PLC owns and manages a fleet of jet and turboprop aircraft for leasing to airlines across the world. The firm counts Fiji Airways, Thomas Cook, Virgin Australia, Mandarin Airlines and Vietjet Air among its other customers.

Air Canada will launch three new Asian routes in the next 30 days, as it continues to expand the international networks of its mainline carrier and leisure airline, Air Canada Rouge.

The new routes from Vancouver to Nagoya and Taipei, and from Toronto to Mumbai, form part of a major period of expansion for Canada’s flag carrier; between 1 June and 1 July 2017, 11 new international routes will be launched to destinations in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Flights between Vancouver and Nagoya commenced on 1 June and will now be operated four times a week on a seasonal basis by Air Canada Rouge. The new Vancouver-Taipei route will then follow on 8 June, with daily flights operated by Air Canada all-year-round using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

And the Asian expansion will continue on 1 July with the launch of four weekly flights between Toronto and Mumbai, also operated by Air Canada using a 787-9.

Other new routes include Vancouver-Frankfurt (operated daily by Air Canada), Vancouver-London Gatwick (three times a week by Air Canada Rouge), Toronto-Berlin (four times a week by Air Canada Rouge), Toronto-Reykjavik (four times a week by Air Canada Rouge), Montreal-Reykjavik (three times a week by Air Canada Rouge), Montreal-Marseille (three times a week by Air Canada Rouge), Montreal-Tel Aviv (twice a week by Air Canada) and Montreal-Algiers (four times a week by Air Canada Rouge).

“Nothing says summer like winging off to an exciting foreign destination, and Air Canada is pleased to offer its customers more options than ever this year. Through our ongoing international expansion, we are adding 11 new routes touching three continents beginning this summer,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

Of these new routes, only Vancouver-Taipei and Toronto-Mumbai will operate all-year-round, while the rest will only be available for the summer season.

Air Canada has continued to expand its trans-Pacific connections from Vancouver, with the launch of a new route to Asia Pacific.

The airline has already announced plans to launch new routes from Vancouver to Taipei and Nagoya this summer, and later in the year it will commence a brand new service to Melbourne.

Initially operating as a seasonal service from 1 December 2017 to 4 February 2018, the Vancouver-Melbourne route will run four times a week. Air Canada will serve the route using its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

“Vancouver-Melbourne is our third route to Australia, in addition to year-round service to Sydney and Brisbane,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines. “Our seasonal Melbourne service will provide additional options for business travellers between North America and Australia as well as Australians seeking a Canadian winter vacation experience.”

Vancouver-Melbourne is one of a series of new seasonal routes Air Canada is planning to launch for the 2017-18 winter season; the airline is also planning to link Vancouver with Orlando, Toronto with Belize City and St Vincent, and Montreal with Lima and Phoenix.

Also this summer, Air Canada will start flying from Vancouver to Denver, Frankfurt, London Gatwick and Boston.

Cathay Pacific has deployed its newest aircraft, the Airbus A350, to Canada for the first time.

The long-haul jet touched down at Vancouver International Airport this week following a non-stop flight from Hong Kong. This marked the first scheduled A350 service in Canadian history.

Cathay has added three more services to Vancouver for the 2017 summer season, taking its total frequency to 17 weekly flights.

“I’m thrilled to not only celebrate Cathay Pacific’s increased frequency and continued success at YVR, but also the first Canadian arrival of the fantastic Airbus A350-900,” said Craig Richmond, president & CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority. “It is exciting to see the continued growth of this route and opportunities that stem from it as YVR works towards building a world class sustainable gateway between Asia and the Americas.”

Vancouver is one of the most popular long-haul destinations for airlines in Greater China; at present, nine airlines from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan serve the Canadian city, with a 10th, Hong Kong Airlines, due to launch flights to Vancouver this summer.

“As a province that works hard to promote trade and attract investment throughout Asia, we welcome these additional direct flights on Cathay Pacific’s important Vancouver-Hong Kong route,” said Teresa Wat, British Columbia’s Minister of International Trade and Asia Pacific Strategy & Multiculturalism. “Direct flights connect us easily across the Pacific, opening up new opportunities for business.”

Two major international airlines have announced plans to join forces on multiple routes connecting destinations across Southeast Asia with Canada.

Cathay Pacific and Air Canada have finalised a “strategic cooperation agreement” aimed at streamlining trans-Pacific travel to and from countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.

This will enable passengers to book single-ticket travel with a combination of the two airlines, providing one-stop connections to Canada from eight Southeast Asian cities. The deal also includes the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer points, and offers onward connections to cities across Canada.

“This agreement with Cathay Pacific will offer Air Canada customers more travel options and reciprocal mileage accrual and redemption benefits when travelling to many important destinations in Southeast Asia,” explained Calin Rovinescu, president & CEO of Air Canada.

“It is a strategic cooperation of mutual benefit and underscores our commitment to offer our customers the very highest quality and service connecting Canada and the world. We look forward to introducing Air Canada codeshare service on Cathay Pacific’s flights and welcoming Cathay Pacific’s customers on our flights beginning in the New Year.”

Under the agreement, Air Canada will codeshare on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights connecting Hong Kong with Manila, Cebu, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. This will enable passengers to connect to trans-Pacific flights to Vancouver or Toronto with either Cathay or Air Canada, via Hong Kong.

In Canada, Cathay will codeshare on Air Canada’s flights from Vancouver and Toronto to multiple major Canadian cities, including Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Halifax.

“Our new codeshare agreement with Air Canada significantly broadens the Canadian network and connectivity for our customers, increasing our reach and expanding choices. Canada is a key destination for Cathay Pacific – the launch of our non-stop service to Vancouver in 1983 marked our very first route to North America – and we look forward to working together with Air Canada and welcoming guests from the airline onto our flights soon,” said Cathay Pacific’s chief executive, Ivan Chu.

Tickets for the codeshare flights will go on sale on 12 January 2017, for travel from 19 January 2017 onwards.

Cathay Pacific currently operates double daily flights to Vancouver from Hong Kong using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, and from 28 March 2017, the airline will add three extra weekly services using its new Airbus A350. The Hong Kong-based carrier also operates 10 weekly flights to Toronto.  Air Canada flies daily from both Toronto and Vancouver to Hong Kong using its fleet of B777s.

Philippine Airlines is expanding its fleet of long-haul aircraft, enabling it to mount additional flights to North America.

The national carrier recently took delivery of its seventh Boeing 777-300ER, and an eighth aircraft will join its fleet by early December. Once both aircraft are delivered, PAL will add four more weekly flights to Los Angeles, three to Vancouver and one to Toronto.

“Our B777’s arrival is just in time for the coming Christmas peak season,” said PAL’s chairman & CEO Dr Lucio C. “With additional seats come additional capacity, which now enables PAL to increase frequencies on its trans- Pacific flights to the US mainland and Canada. With its location on the Pacific Rim, Vancouver is already one of the best connected long-haul destinations from Asia.

And these links will be strengthened even further next year when Air Canada launches two new trans-Pacific routes from the Canadian city.

On 1 June 2017, the national carrier will start offering direct flights connecting Vancouver with Nagoya. Operated by its Air Canada Rouge subsidiary, this route will be served three times a week using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft, rising to four weekly flights in August and September.

Then on 8 June 2017, Air Canada’s mainline carrier will launch daily year-round flights between Vancouver and Taipei using its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Vancouver is one of the most accessible long-haul destinations from Asia
Vancouver is one of the most accessible long-haul destinations from Asia

Air Canada will be the only airline operating the Nagoya-Vancouver route, while it will compete with Taiwan’s China Airlines and EVA Air on the Taipei service.

These two new routes form part of a major expansion plan for Air Canada, which will see the launch a total of six new routes to destinations on three continents within the space of a month next summer.

This growth spurt will kick off on 1 June 2017 with the launch of the Vancouver-Nagoya route and another Air Canada Rouge service between Toronto and Berlin. A day after the launch of the Vancouver-Taipei route, the airline will commence direct flights between Montreal and Marseille on 9 June 2017. And another new service from Montreal, this time flying to the Algerian capital Algiers, will commence on 26 June. Both of these routes will be operated by Air Canada Rouge.

And finally on 1 July 2017, Air Canada will launch daily Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flights between Toronto and Mumbai.

Air Canada Rouge will serve the Nagoya route
Air Canada Rouge will serve the Nagoya route

“Air Canada is pleased to offer customers these new non-stop routes to exciting destinations around the world. While extending our global reach, they also represent a further deepening of our already substantial international network,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

“Toronto-Mumbai is our third route between Canada and India starting with the launch of Toronto-Delhi service last fall, and Nagoya will be our fourth airport in Japan. With these new services, we will now operate 21 routes between Canada and Asia, including the Middle East.

“Berlin and Marseille will bring the number of European routes we serve to 44 next summer, including four cities in France. Algiers will be our second destination in Africa, which makes Air Canada one of only a small number of global carriers flying to all six inhabited continents,” Smith added.

Vancouver Airport has attracted a slew of new Asian airlines and flights in recent years, due to its relative close proximity to the Asian continent and a programme of incentives for airlines, including lower landing fees.

In total, 15 Asia Pacific-based carriers now fly to the city, alongside with Air Canada’s eight Asia Pacific routes from Vancouver, not including those announced today.

China Eastern Airlines has applied for permission to launch to flights to Abu Dhabi.

According to its application with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the carrier intends to operate three weekly flights to the UAE capital from Shanghai, with a stop in Kunming in both directions. If approved, the new route would commence in January 2017.

And China Eastern has also filed for permission to launch a new trans-Pacific flight linking Vancouver with Nanjing. This could mark the eastern Chinese city’s first connection with Canada and thrice weekly flights could start as early as next month.

This will come at the expense however, of the airline’s Shanghai-Vancouver service, which would be cut from 14 to 11 flights per week. The Nanjing service would also continue onwards to Kunming.

China Eastern carrier plans to deploy its Airbus A330 aircraft on both new routes.

The Chinese port city of Qingdao will soon be accessible from more parts of the world, following the launch of a series of new international flights.

China Eastern Airlines recently revealed plans to launch Qingdao’s first trans-Pacific flight to the US, with direct services to San Francisco starting on 29 September 2016.

And it has now been revealed that another Chinese carrier, Capital Airlines, will launch direct flights between Qingdao and Melbourne on the same day. This will mark the airline’s first foray into the Australian market and Qingdao’s first direct link Down Under.

Flights will operate three times a week, departing Qingdao every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and returning from Melbourne the next day. All services will be operated using an Airbus A330 aircraft and continue onwards between Qingdao and Shenyang.

Qingdao, which is located on the shores of the Yellow Sea in eastern China’s Shandong province, is best known as being the birthplace of Tsingtao, China’s most famous beer.

Following the launch of its Melbourne route, Capital Airlines will also start flying from Qingdao to Vancouver on 30 December 2016. The city is already connected to Europe by Lufthansa’s flights to and from Frankfurt.

On 30 December 2016, the airline will commence services from Hangzhou to Vancouver, via Qingdao. Flights will run three times a week (every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) using a 222-seat, two-class Airbus A330 aircraft.

The launch will cement Vancouver’s position as the most popular long-haul destination for Chinese airlines. Capital Airlines will join Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Sichuan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines in flying from mainland China to Vancouver, while Cathay Pacific, China Airlines and EVA Air also serve the Canadian hub from Hong Kong or Taiwan.

The North American launch marks the latest phase in Capital Airlines’ long-haul expansion strategy; the airline started flying to Europe in 2015 and is also planning to commence services to Australia in future.

China’s Xiamen Airlines will launch its inaugural flight to North America on Monday (25 July 2016), when it kicks off a new direct service from Xiamen to Vancouver.

The new trans-Pacific route, which will operate three times a week, also marks the first North American connection for the city of Xiamen and southeast China’s Fujian province.

Flights will depart Xiamen’s Gaoqi International Airport every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 2130 and arrive in Vancouver at 1840. The return flights will then leave the Canadian city on every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 0145, landing back into Xiamen at 0530.

Xiamen Airlines will serve the route using its 237-seat, three-class Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Four other Chinese carriers – Air China, China Eastern, China Southern and Sichuan Airlines – already fly to Vancouver, and with the addition of Xiamen Airlines, Vancouver International Airport will host more Chinese airlines than any other airport in North America.

Thai Airways International could resume direct flights to North America, following the arrival of its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Bangkok Post reported the national carrier’s president, Charamporn Jotikasthira, as saying recently that the new fuel-efficient long-haul jets could enable it to relaunch flights across the Pacific. But the destination focus is likely shift from major cities like Los Angeles and New York to those with a shorter flight time.

“We are not looking at going back to Los Angeles because it is too far… and crowded with competitors, and we never make money,” Charamporn told the newspaper. “We need to look at other cities in North America such as Seattle and Vancouver, which offer more potential if we decide to return to the continent.”

Despite the fact that Vancouver, Seattle and LA all lie along North America’s West Coast, the distance from Bangkok to Seattle and Vancouver is significantly shorter than between the Thai capital and LA. And with the improved economics of the new B787-9 Dreamliner, which burns approximately 20% less fuel than older similar-sized aircraft, direct North American flights could soon be feasible again.

THAI is planning to take delivery of the first of four B787-9s in 2017. The airline already operates six smaller B787-8s, but the additional capacity of the B787-9 is likely to make it more suitable for North American routes.

One issue clouding THAI’s return to the US however, is the FAA’s recent downgrading of Thailand’s safety rating. An unsatisfactory audit by ICAO, the UN’s aviation body, led to Thailand being dumped in the FAA’s Category 2 last year, along with Bangladesh and Indonesia. And until the country returns to Category 1 status, THAI will be unable to launch any new routes to the US.

THAI once operated flights to LA, San Francisco, New York and Toronto, but rising fuel prices meant that these routes ceased to be economically viable. The airline’s last North American route, to LA, was suspended in October 2015.

Air Canada has launched a new service connecting Vancouver with Brisbane.

The inaugural flight arrived in the Australian city on Friday morning (3 June 2016), becoming the only direct service linking Canada and Queensland. These new flights will be ramped up to a daily service on 17 June 2016, and Air Canada will deploy its newest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, on the route.

“We are delighted to launch the only non-stop, year-round service between Canada and Brisbane,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines. “Our new Brisbane flights complement our daily flights between Canada and Sydney, solidifying our market-leading position as the airline providing the most seats between Canada and Australia.

“The seamless connections through in-transit pre-clearance facilities combined with our extensive domestic Canada and USA network radiating from Vancouver position YVR to be the preferred trans-Pacific gateway for business and leisure travellers,” Smith added.

The new schedule will see Air Canada’s flights depart Vancouver Airport at 2345 and arrive in Brisbane at 0715 two days later, having crossed the International Date Line. The return services will then leave at 1040 and arrive back in Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

Passengers on the B787 will have the choice of 20 flat-bed seats in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy.

Less than six months after the launch of its inaugural flight from Toronto to Delhi, Air Canada has unveiled plans to introduce a second direct service to the Indian capital.

On 20 October 2016, the airline will launch three weekly flights between Vancouver and Delhi, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This will mark the first time this route has been operated non-stop.

Flights will depart Vancouver every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2140 and arrive in Delhi at 0120 two days later, having crossed the International Date Line. The return service will then leave the Indian capital every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 0630, arriving back in Vancouver at 0655 the same day.

Air Canada will deploy its 298-seat B787-9 Dreamliner on the route, which features 30 seats in business class, 21 in premium economy and 247 in economy class.

“Customer response to our Toronto-Delhi service has been extremely positive, and with this new seasonal Vancouver route we are strategically increasing our presence in the important Asia Pacific market in time for Diwali festival celebrations,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines. “Our non-stop Dreamliner flights from our Vancouver hub will also offer the shortest elapsed flying time from Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles to Delhi.”

Craig Richmond, president & CEO at Vancouver International Airport, said that the local community has “requested this route for many years”.

“It will be a pleasure to celebrate its arrival during Diwali. I would like to thank our long-standing partner Air Canada for opening up this exciting new route and for supporting us in our vision to be a… connecting hub between Asia and the Americas,” he added.

The Vancouver-Delhi route forms part of Air Canada’s ongoing international expansion strategy. Last year, the national carrier launched new services from Vancouver to Osaka, from Toronto to Delhi, Amsterdam and Dubai, and from Montreal to Venice and Mexico City.

And this summer it plans to start flying from Vancouver to Brisbane and Dublin, from Toronto to Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Glasgow, London Gatwick and Seoul, and from Montreal to Casablanca and Lyon.

This Australian expansion will continue in June 2016 with the start of three weekly flights to Melbourne, direct from Xiamen, the airline’s base in southeast China’s Fujian province.

Then in July it plans to launch four weekly flights from Xiamen to Vancouver, marking its first ever trans-Pacific flight, and in September the carrier will start flying four times a week from Xiamen to Seattle, via Shenzhen.

And finally in January 2017, Xiamen Airlines will launch a new daily flight between Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, and New York.

Xiamen Airlines’ long-haul expansion is being enabled by its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline already operates six B787-8 Dreamliners and will start taking delivery of the larger B787-9 aircraft later this year.

The airline has significant future expansion plans, with a target of increasing its current fleet of 152 aircraft to 270 jets by the end of 2020.

Tianjin Airlines is planning to launch its first trans-Pacific services next year, connecting China with Canada.

The carrier, which currently operates a large network of domestic and short-haul international flights, applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to launch four weekly flights to Vancouver.

The move follows the recent upgrade of Tianjin Airlines’ Air Operator’s Certificate to allow it to operate long-haul international routes from China.

If approved, the carrier will launch its first ever trans-Pacific flight from Chongqing to Vancouver, via Tianjin, in June 2016. This will be enabled by the delivery of a new fleet of four wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft next year.

Tianjin Airlines is owned by the HNA Group, and its long-haul expansion follows a similar strategy undertaken recently by another HNA carrier, Beijing Capital Airlines, which has started flying to Europe and plans to launch services to Australia. HNA’s largest carrier, Hainan Airlines, already operates a significant long-haul international network, including multiple trans-Pacific routes.

China’s Xiamen Airlines is planning to launch its first ever trans-Pacific flights to the US and Canada.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has revealed that Xiamen Airlines, which is based in southeast China’s Fujian province, has applied for permission to launch four weekly flights from Xiamen to Vancouver from July 2016, and weekly flights between Fuzhou and New York in January 2017.

The Vancouver flights will be operated using a 237-seat, two-class Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, while the New York service will use a larger B787-9 Dreamliner, the first of which will be delivered to Xiamen Airlines in 2016.

If the new routes are approved by the CAAC, Xiamen Airlines will become the fourth mainland Chinese carrier to fly to New York, following Air China, China Eastern and China Southern, and the fifth to Vancouver, after Air China, China Southern, China Eastern and Sichuan Airlines.

Xiamen Airlines launched its first ever flights to Europe earlier this year, connecting Xiamen with Amsterdam.

Air Canada will launch a direct service between Vancouver and Brisbane next year, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Commencing on 17 June 2016, the route will initially operate three times a week. Flights will depart Vancouver every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 2345, arriving in Brisbane at 0715 two days later (having crossed the International Date Line).

The return services will then leave Brisbane every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 1040, arriving back into Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

“Air Canada continues to strategically expand its international network with the addition of our second Australian destination – Brisbane,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s president & CEO. “The new route increases our presence in the Asia Pacific market at a time when trade and travel in the region and between North America is growing, with a further boost expected from the Trans-Pacific Partnership now under negotiation.

“Already, Air Canada commits $2 billion worth of aircraft to the Pacific market each day and Brisbane is the third new Pacific route we have announced in the past year, after TorontoTokyo Haneda and Vancouver-Osaka.”

Rovinsecu added that the route had been made possible by the “operating economics of the Dreamliner”.

Air Canada configures the fuel-efficient B787-8 aircraft with 20 flat-beds in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy class.

This announcement marks the latest stage in Air Canada’s recent expansion. Already this year the national carrier has launched four new international routes, including Montreal-Venice, Montreal-Mexico City, Toronto-Amsterdam and Vancouver-Osaka. New flights from Toronto to Dubai and Delhi will also commence this autumn.

Virgin Atlantic has announced it will add a fifth weekly flight from Heathrow to Vancouver next year.

The extra weekly flight will be available during the summer months adding more than 2,000 extra seats to and from the city, where the airline has seen 15% growth.

The flights will operate on Sundays from May to August as well as on a Wednesday from July to September.

“The North American market has always been at the core of our business. Our Vancouver service was launched in 2012 and has been proving popular since its inaugural with demand remaining high throughout the summer months. Since its launch we’ve flown 17,214 passengers to Vancouver,” said Edmond Rose, director of airline planning at Virgin Atlantic.

“We currently run a seasonal service four times a week from London Heathrow to Vancouver and we are delighted at its popularity. To meet this demand we have taken the decision to introduce a fifth weekly service next summer, resulting in a strong increase in the number of seats available for holiday makers looking for a getaway to British Columbia,” he added.

Airline news from IAG/JAL and Virgin Atlantic’s new route

Japan authorities approve IAG/JAL deal

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has granted anti-trust immunity to IAG’s agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL) on flights between the EU and Japan. The deal will result in a new joint business between the groups, which will launch in March 2013 and co-operate on routes flown by British Airways and JAL. “Amid the evolving Japanese aviation industry, the ATI will enable us to build a strong value-creating relationship with British Airways that can benefit our customers as well as our businesses,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, president of JAL.

Virgin Atlantic touches down in Vancouver

Virgin Atlantic’s inaugural flight to Vancouver from Heathrow touched down on Friday. The new service will operate four times a week until 27 October and is the airline’s 32nd route. Sir Richard Branson joined the flight with Amy Williams MBE, winter Olympic gold medallist from Vancouver 2010. “We’ve had lots of customers asking us to fly to Vancouver over the years, so we’re delighted to launch this new route in response to customer demand,” said Branson on the launch. “Vancouver’s tourism is thriving and we believe that we can drive demand even higher by providing great competition with our award winning product and service”.
