W Hotels Worldwide, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of 31 extraordinary brands, prepares to debut in Hungary this July with the opening of W Budapest. Housed in the iconic Drechsler Palace, previously home to the Institute of Ballet, the new luxury destination will offer visionary design, eclectic gastronomy and a socially-driven spirit drawn from the cosmopolitan capital.

Bookings are now open for this reimagined historic palace located on Andrassy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s most luxurious shopping street. W Budapest will feature 151 stylish guestrooms and suites, including one Extreme WOW (Presidential) Suite, all influenced by Budapest’s rich history, creativity and diversity.

“With a rich architectural and historical heritage, Budapest offers a diverse blend of cultural influences and gastronomical adventures that make it the perfect destination for our first Eastern European opening,” said Jenni Benzaquen, SVP Europe, Middle East and Africa Brand Portfolio at Marriott International. “We’re incredibly excited for the arrival of W Hotels in Hungary, which will showcase an evolved direction and design for the brand.”

W Budapest will ignite curiosity and foster connections for its guests through uniquely crafted experiences including a destination bar exclusive to the hotel, a reimagined W Lounge, innovative local programming and a new Asian-inspired restaurant called Nightingale, named after Igor Stravinsky’s Nightingale opera.

“Our ambition is to celebrate the dynamism and creativity of this city’s social culture, coupled with the unique energy of the W brand. W Budapest brings to life the contrast between Buda and Pest, fusing them through the hotel’s aesthetic, creating an intriguing interplay between the hotel’s design elements. We can’t wait to introduce our new, impressive offering to guests and locals alike as we open the hotel for bookings” said Igor Buercher, General Manager, W Budapest.

With more details to be announced over the coming months, W Budapest is anticipated to become an evolutionary heartbeat of the capital with innovative design and programming, coupled with familiar Away® Spa, FIT® fitness centre and WET® pool offerings.

W Hotels has announced its collaboration with Italy-based, eco-conscious skin and haircare name The Davines Group for a brand-wide partnership. The Marriott brand will incorporate its unisex amenity line across its world-wide properties.

“In choosing a new amenity line, we road tested many brands and formulations and not only love the way the Davines Group products look, smell and feel, but the values they stand for as a company. We are very excited to bring these products to all of our guest rooms across the globe,” said Anthony Ingham, global brand leader of W Hotels.

With a research lab in Parma, Italy, the brand features natural ingredients like yellow melon extract found in their signature ‘Momo’ products. Davines is a CO2 neutral company that supports reforestation to offset its carbon emissions. In addition, all products are sulphate- and paraben-free. As part of Marriott International’s initiative to reduce its hotels’ environmental impact worldwide, W plans to offer the new amenities in waste-reducing, full-size bottles by the end of 2020.

Marriott International has signed an agreement with Larco to bring W Hotels’ bold design, signature Whatever/Whenever service and innovative programming to Toronto for the first time, underscoring growing demand for luxury in Canada and the brand’s boundary-breaking approach to design.

The nine-storey, 255-room property located at 90 Bloor Street East in Toronto’s fashionable Yorkville neighbourhood, will be surrounded by high-end boutiques, galleries and design studios as well as chic cafes, polished bars and fine-dining restaurants. The USD 40 million design transformation, which began in July 2019, will reimagine the property’s guest rooms, restaurants and amenities. The property is expected to open as W Toronto in summer of 2020.

“We are applying a unique, vibrant sensibility to the upcoming W Toronto, one that has not been seen before in Toronto,” said Paul Cahill, area vice president of Eastern Canada for Marriott International. “The exciting evolution of this property into Toronto’s first W hotel is consistent with the ongoing evolution of this Toronto neighbourhood whose vibrancy, sophistication, and density continues to grow. This is a strategic location for the brand, and we foresee it welcoming international business and leisure travellers and becoming a destination for urban thrill-seekers.”

This signing also underscores Marriott’s growing luxury portfolio in Canada, where the company now has seven operational luxury hotels along with additional luxury hotel projects expected to be announced before year-end.

The founder of hip luxury chain W Hotels, and chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group, Barry Sternlicht, unveiled his latest venture in the British capital this week, with the opening of London branch of Treehouse Hotels.

Described by Sternlich as being “the little brother of the 1.” Treehouse is less serious, more torn jeans and t-shirts and infinitely accessible. Sunny, homey, witty and fun.

The London property will be the first of the brand’s inventory to open, with additional locations in the US, and further afield, launching in the coming months.

“It’s really exciting to showcase our first property in one of the great travel markets in the world, London. I believe this Treehouse, with its truly sensational rooftop lounge and bar, will fill a void in the London marketplace which is missing a hotel that revels in the fun of it all and doesn’t take itself too seriously” said Sternlicht.

Barry Sternlicht

The restaurant and bar will be operated by The Madera Group, an L.A. based international hospitality group that owns and operates venues in Southern California and Arizona, including Tocaya Organica and Toca Madera.

“Partnering with industry pioneer Barry Sternlicht is an honor for us and aligns exceptionally well with our mindset of innovation and striving to raise the experience of our guests to new heights. Our landmark location on Regent Street will provide the perfect stage to spearhead a new type of hotel experience and we look forward to delivering the global showcase of the first Treehouse hotel in the world with our new partners Starwood Capital Group and SH Hotels & Resorts,” said Aneil Handa, director of, owners, the Cairn Group .

A little over a month after the success of our GM Summit, it was time for the TD events team to once again swing into action. This time we were putting the focus on the world of HR and recruitment. Would we be able to reach and raise the bar on our inaugural event?

With the aim of hosting an event for people working in human resources with real education and actionable insights, in an intimate environment where speakers would interact and share their experiences in a free-flowing back and forth with attendees, we brought together seven international speakers with 50 of the top HR directors in Asia.

Taking place at Spaces, a co-working space in trendy downtown Sukhumvit in Bangkok, the event kicked of opening words from hosts TD’s CEO Brett Henry and director of jobs Ken Li (below).

The pair took to the mic to address a group of the biggest names in accommodation and beyond, including Accor, Ritz Carlton, W Hotels, JW Marriott, Traveloka, ADECCO and Minor Hotels.

Following the opening sequence, Sushma Panikker Ceaser (below), former learning and development director at Emaar Hospitality, took to the stage

Thoughtful thought leadership

Titled “Building a Thoughtful Thought Leadership Culture”, Panikker Ceaser’s presentation took us on a journey from her schooling at the Chinmaya Vidyalaya school in India and how the influence of one teacher’s quote, “When you have your own insights and you have a voice, you can change the world”, has empowered her career in talent management and leadership development.

Drilling down into what makes a thought leader, Panniker Ceaser’s easy and engaging oratory had attendees hanging on her every word. She revealed the differences between an expert and a thought leader, before stimulating our minds with some quirky but effective activities and leaving the crowd enlightened by her formula: Insights + Voice=Thought Leadership.

Millennial must-haves

Next up was Sam Neo (below), the 30-year-old wunderkind behind HR startup People Mentality Inc with his energetic and passionate discourse ‘The Picture Perfect Employer In the Age of Millennials’, which looked at demystifying the perception of the newest members of the workforce; what they want, what they need and how best to attract this group of technology-driven go-getters.

His advice included “Focus on the key message that you want to send across. Identify your key leverages and frame it into your message for your target audience.”

Neo also explored the importance of creating powerful narratives through story-telling as a way of reaching your audience, creating a drop-the-mic moment with he closed his presentation with the phrase “Facts tell, stories sell”.

Retaining information

After lunch, millennials remained the topic of discussion for Dr Anthony Erb (below), dean of international programs at the Business and Hotel Management School – Switzerland (BHMS). However, Erb took the opposite stance fto Neo, outlining instead what an employer wants from an applicant, in his barnstorming speech ‘Employee Experience and Retention’.

Peppered with fascinating insights from the veteran hotelier and academic, who started working life his as the first male housekeeper in Hong Kong, Dr Erb urged young job seekers and graduates to embrace practical experience and not just theory, if they want to achieve their career goals in hospitality management with bon mots such as:

“Employers couldn’t care less what you studied. They need staff who are professional, communicative and contribute to business profit” and “If you don’t show management skills at entry level, then you will never be a manager”.

Dr Erb’s passionate address left the audience in raptures and enthused, ready for the next talk of the afternoon, by management consultant and thought leader, Jitender Panihar.

Potentials and myths

During ‘Future of the Workforce – Unlocking Human Potential’ Panihar provided his opinion that “millennials are a myth” and how it is time to for HR professionals to start thinking about the next wave of youngsters with data showing that by 2020 up to 36% of the workforce will be made up of members of Generation Z.

Panihar wrapped things up with by looking at the potential of AI, blockchain and VR and making it clear that HR has traditionally been slow embracing change and opining it is actually the “responsibility of HR to be able to anticipate changes of the future”, and how the sector must “understand and speak the language of technology.”

Following a quick coffee break, the microphone was passed to Tony Chisholm (below), CCO of GCP Hospitality.

Recruiters or recruitment

Chisholm’s visceral and vibrant words on the importance of a well thought-out recruitment strategy and his belief that finding staff should not be handled by an HR department but by department heads stimulated heated debate amongst the speakers and attendants and organisers who were surprised but fascinated by Chisholm’s experiences of building a successful hotel and productive hotel team.

The other big takeaway from Chisholm’s discussion was his insistence that hotels should “Spend money on training as people are your best assets” – indeed Chisholm thinks that not only should hoteliers should not try to save money but actually seek to out spend their competitors or risk the high staff turnover in a quest for false economy.

With just two more sessions remaining, the day had flown by and after coffee and some revitalising exercises by summit host Ken Li; we welcomed the penultimate speaker to the floor Adrian Tan (below), the co-founder of Singapore HR tech firm Resource Group.

Tech in HR

Delving into the possibilities of tech for in recruitment, he stared simply with the observation that already “AI is capable of interviewing ten thousand applicants at the same time”, before moving onto how carefully curated information can help recruiters “replace gut feeling with data”.

Also, in an echo of Sam Neo’s talk, that data must “have a story and result in action plus the staggering remark that it will soon it will be possible for chatbots to handle first stage job application interviews.

Tan also introduced the summit to Holacracy, a management concept where decisions and leadership decisions come through a system of self-organising teams in place of the customary hierarchical management structures.

With Tan blowing minds on tech, it was left to the HR summit’s final speaker, area director of HR for Hyatt Thailand, Cambodia and the Maldives, Xuwat Wongchotewattana to bring proceedings to a close – and he did so in style.

Company culture

There is no doubt that Wongchotewattana is a star performer, regaling the summit with stories of what is like to grow up in Northern Thailand before experiencing the culture shock of studying in the south of the country.

The charismatic raconteur demonstrated the necessity of how a proper system of onboarding is vital for a happy and productive team with an enlightening workshop on Thai culture, the concept of face in Thailand, Laos and Japan as well as how “conflict can be prevented by exploring and engaging with cultural similarities and differences”.

With the workshops over, speakers, participants and organisers retired to the bar for some deserved refreshments and to unpack the day. Catching up with the events lead organiser Ken Li, I asked him how he thought the event went:

“It was really important for me to organise an event where the attendees could feel comfortable to ask questions and challenge industry thought-leaders with their own views. The choice of venue, how seating was done, and moderation of each speaker session was key for creating audience interaction and a two-way dialogue.”

Takeaways and plans

From the lively interactions between our speaks and guests today, its seems our plans bore fruit and for the event to go off in a way that aligned almost perfectly with our hopes.

Following the success of September’s event, over the next few months, we plan to expand the HR Summit product into key travel markets, such Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE, the UK and the USA. Stay tuned to our Events page for updates.

W Hotels Worldwide opened its first property in the capital of Malaysia yesterday. W Kuala Lumpur’s anticipated debut focuses on lifestyle and localisation to make stays unique experiences.

Kuala Lumpur is known for a mix of industry and abundant nature; with “Jungle City” and “Confluence” as W Kuala Lumpur’s overarching design narrative, W Kuala Lumpur celebrates the best of both worlds. However, the home of the iconic Petronas Towers is not without luxury hotels and most of the big players in the hospitality industry invested in Malaysia. So, to create a distinctive brand, the new W property is focusing on lifestyle and localisation.

In an exclusive interview with TD, W Kuala Lumpur general manager Christian Metzner says: “W’s focus on local markets makes each W property experience a unique experience. All over the world, W’s core values define who we are and bring substance and style to everything we do, and Kuala Lumpur is no exception: we are bold, tireless, we are the ultimate Insider.”

Design, fashion, music, and fuel

Being true to its brand, W Kuala Lumpur will target luxury and business travellers. However, W Kuala Lumpur wants to establish that it is not simply a place where you spend the night, but a destination itself.

Metzner continues: “W Hotels took hotels from being a functional place – a place for you to sleep, to eat, to work – to something that is more lifestyle-driven, with great bars, great restaurants and perhaps most importantly: somewhere to see and to be seen.

“As such, W is very clear on our DNA as a brand; it is boiled down to very clear core values, that is our four passion points – which are Design, Fashion, Music, and Fuel.”

“A hyperlocal Kuala Lumpur-spin”

Summing up the hotel’s strategy, Metzner adds, “To put it simply, we’ll put a hyperlocal Kuala Lumpur-spin on what the W experience will be. The hotel sets the stage where you can be the star, or mix and mingle with like-minded people. We think guests will definitely be in for a treat.”

This is seconded by W Kuala Lumpur’s director of sales and marketing, Nikie Mok, saying: “We strive to be the top three hotel choices in the KL high-end market, and at the same time, we strive to deliver the best customer experience for our guests.”

Out-of-the-box experiences

When asked about their goals, Metzner confirms: “That’s simple: We want to be the ‘it’ hotel in Kuala Lumpur for epic experiences! We want to create out-of-the-box, unique experiences that will give us an added advantage against our competitors.”

W Kuala Lumpur is also adopting the Whatever/Whenever service mentality that tales hospitality in a whole new level. Whether you stay for work or play in one of the 150 stylish guest rooms and suites, W Kuala Lumpur has a full calendar of exclusives happenings that will showcase What’s New/Next in design, fashion, music and fuel to our guests and local KL-ites alike.

“All that is to say: our mission is to fuel lust for life, and we look forward to providing insider access to What’s New/Next,” Metzner says.

Centre for MICE

W Kuala Lumpur tries to position itself to be at the centre of events with its top-notch MICE facilities. “At W Kuala Lumpur, we make meetings memorable. Adopting a creative approach to elevate your event from ordinary to extraordinary, W Kuala Lumpur features over 1,500 square meters of event space to set the stage for lively and vivid presentations, and the means to take on big conferences, weddings, and product launches,” Metzner says in our interview.

W Kuala Lumpur boasts a sprawling Great Room which is more than 1,000 square meters and is one of the largest ballrooms to be found in the city centre with the means to accommodate up to 700 guests. An impressive LED wall, at a staggering 10 meters, is a showstopper. Additionally, Studios and Strategy spaces can be easily transformed to suit your every event need.

“Bespoke setup… mood music, signature scents and more to set the tone”

“Each meeting space is wired up with the latest technology and audio-visual equipment, and you can create your own bespoke setup and choose from mood music, signature scents and more to set the tone that you prefer. Do we even have to say it: high-speed Internet access is at your fingertips!” Metzner tells me.

Kuala Lumpur is a booming cosmopolitan and a destination for business and luxury travellers. The growing demand for luxury travel in Southeast Asia means tourists are constantly looking for non-traditional experiences and W Kuala Lumpur is here to offer just that.

There is no stopping W Hotels Worldwide from expanding its footprint in Greater China with its latest opening in Xi’an. W Xi’an is the brand’s seventh hotel in the country, and the largest property in Asia Pacific yet.

Known to many as “the birthplace of Chinese civilisation,” Xi’an was a popular stop along the Silk Road since ancient times, serving as a collective meeting place for both culture and cuisine, and growing richer and more diverse with age. Xi’an is the home of many historical monuments and a plethora of ancient ruins and tombs making it a popular tourist destination for those visiting Greater China.

W Xi’an is located near Northwest China’s largest international travel hub, Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, as well as some of the famous sites in the region – Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Datang Furong Garden, and Qujiang Lake.

Spread over approximately 80,000 square metres, W Xi’an gives a bold first impression of the W Hotels brand, standing in the shape of a ‘W’ along with the other two buildings of the W Five Park complex. W Xi’an boasts 385 guest rooms and suites and also features an Extreme WOW Suite – the most lavish of the hotel’s 73 expansive suites.

Targeting luxury and business travellers, the hotel is equipped with a restaurant, spa, pools, and gym for luxurious experience. With over 4,000 square metres of event space, versatile function spaces are fully equipped with advanced audio-visual facilities to set the stage for world-class events. The Great Room, with its towering ceiling and twisting chandeliers, has 2,330 square metres of space to accommodate up to 1,000 guests, making it one of the largest hotel ballrooms in town.

“Xi’an is one of the most culturally and historically rich destinations”

Anthony Ingham, global brand leader of W Hotels Worldwide, said: “Xi’an is one of the most culturally and historically rich destinations in the world. Over thousands of years, the city has maintained its magnetic attraction for global travellers seeking both boundary-pushing and iconic art, design and entertainment, making it the perfect destination for our new flagship property.”

“W Xi’an shows off our ability to, like the city itself, innovate. From the hotel’s bold and complex design to its many hidden homages to millennia of history, we are ready to add a new level to the city’s ever-evolving offerings for global guests,” he added.

Aldar Properties has appointed Marriott International to manage one of its prime properties on the tourist hot spot, Yas Island.

With AED 20 billion on its real estate portfolio and an aggressive asset management strategy, Aldar’s standalone hotel will be flagged under W Hotels – the brand’s debut in Abu Dhabi. Starting on 1 July 2018, Marriott International will assume operation of the Yas Island hotel, which will go through a refurbishment period while remaining open to guests. It will be refreshed and redesigned, with upgrades to its lobby and pool facilities, as per W Hotels’ brand standards.

“Our strategy to employ the most reputable international operators”

Commenting on the announcement, Talal Al Dhiyebi, CEO of Aldar Properties, said: “Appointing Marriott International to manage the operations of our Yas Island hotel supports our strategy to employ the most reputable international operators and reflects our active approach to the management of our portfolio.

“Marriott International’s experience will ensure guests have a memorable stay at our world-class hotel while driving value for our Asset Management business.”

The hotel overlooks the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race track – a key component of Aldar’s Yas Island destination strategy. Moreover, the island is expecting the opening of Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi next month, which will be another addition to its world-class entertainment and leisure attractions. This will drive more UAE residents and global tourists to the destination, where Aldar currently has a portfolio of seven hotels.

“A new dimension to the luxury and lifestyle hospitality offering”

Alex Kyriakidis, president and managing director, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International added: “We are delighted to work with Aldar to introduce W Hotels on Yas Island, bringing a new dimension to the luxury and lifestyle hospitality offering on the iconic landmark.

“Marriott International and Aldar share a similar vision for this project and we look forward to infusing the energy and innovative mindset of the brand into a vibrant destination such as Yas Island.”

Yas Island is now set to become one of the top destinations in the world. Abu Dhabi’s media and entertainment zone is also relocating its state-of-the-art facilities to Yas Island and has appointed Aldar as its strategic real estate partner.

The first phase of the new free zone is valued at approximately AED 1 billion and is set to grow with a target of attracting 10,000 working professionals from the media sector. This will form part of the AED 12 billion Yas Bay master development – a waterfront and entertainment district and an urban island community.

Aldar Properties is an Abu Dhabi-based property development, investment and management firm. Early last month, the company made one of the biggest real estate purchases in the history of the UAE.

W Brisbane

W Hotels Worldwide, part of Marriott International, has debuted in Australia with the opening of W Brisbane in one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.

Owned by Shayher Group and overlooking the Brisbane River in the city’s CBD, the hotel’s bold, playful and modern W branding is a great match for the fast urban lifestyle in the capital of the Sunshine State.

“W Brisbane is the first of its kind in Australia,” said Haldon Philp, general manager at W Brisbane. “From the Whatever/Whenever service that drives the W brand, delivering whatever our guests want, whenever they want it, to event programming centred around Design, Music, Fashion and Fuel [the brand’s take on fitness] to coveted partnerships such as Three Blue Ducks.

“Now is the time for a hotel of this calibre to come to Brisbane as the city enjoys its coming of age.”

The welcome desks at W Brisbane

W Brisbane houses 312 guest rooms including 32 suites, which feature river views and the latest in tech and entertainment. Although the rooms prominently feature white walls, it’s far from boring with wall panels inspired by traditional Queenslander homes. In addition, 10-gallon drums provide an outback vibe ins the bathrooms.

Finally, the Extreme Wow Suite – the brand’s interpretation of the traditional presidential suite – showcases a panoramic view of the river to the mountains and beyond.

Victor Clavell, area vice president, luxury, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International, said: “There’s nothing quite like Australia, a diverse country that is not only famous for its natural wonders but also for its celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.

“Touted as Australia’s new capital of cool with its edgy urban spaces and burgeoning passions for music, fashion and design, Brisbane is an ideal destination for the W brand.”

The Wonderful King Room – W Brisbane

W Brisbane has tapped Nic Graham & Associates, a local interior design agency. The group has made a theme of “A River Dreaming”, an ode to its location on the banks of Brisbane River. In recent years, it has become a buzzing epicentre of the city’s social scene, and its features are weaved throughout the hotel.

Bruce Ryde, VP for luxury brands and brand marketing, Marriott International Asia-Pacific, concluded: “Brisbane’s bustling riverbank is a hotspot for travellers who can’t wait to explore this dynamic city and South East Queensland, a perfect match for W Hotels’ bold design and playful, contemporary approach to luxury.”

W Hotels Worldwide is also opening W Melbourne and W Sydney, both set for 2020.

W has a brand-new look, bringing supermodel-level style to W guests and fashion fans on-the-go. W Hotels today announced the debut of the exclusive “Off Duty” Closet, the latest project inspired by the iconic lifestyle brand’s global fashion innovator, Joan Smalls, W Hotels and creative director, Sarah Easley, will debut 25 items inspired by Smalls’ own jet setting style.

Smalls has been putting her passion to work with W since March 2017, developing insider guides and shaping the brand’s global fashion platform with an expert eye. Curated by Easley to reflect Smalls’ personal style, the “Off Duty” Closet includes pieces from seven top designers who have created signature items for the Closet’s limited release.

In light of the recent disaster in Puerto Rico and in honour of Smalls’ passion for her heritage, Smalls will dedicate all of her royalties from the “Off Duty” Closet to Unidos For Puerto Rico, a generous donation that will be matched by W Hotels in support of ongoing relief efforts.

“Everyone knows what I wear on the runway, in my shoots or on TV, but when I’m not in front of a camera I still curate my look – I spend so much time traveling, what I wear when I’m off duty shapes a lot of my personal style,” said Joan Smalls, global fashion innovator, W Hotels Worldwide.

“I love that W always wants travellers to be on the inside of the fashion world,” said Sarah Easley, Creative Director of the “Off Duty” Closet with W Hotels Worldwide. “What better way to get a real insider experience than sharing styles I love? I can’t wait to see fellow travelers rocking these looks!”

Sarah Easley, chose seven distinctive brands for the limited release. Combining the W brand’s passion for supporting emerging fashion talent with new and next styles. The “Off Duty” Closet will feature items from top fashion brands Veronica Beard, Yestadt Millinery, K/LLER Collection, KREWE, Rails, Jibs Life, and Road Twenty-Two.

W Hotels creates industry’s first video game

To mark the opening of W Bellevue in the US, W Hotels has created the hotel industry’s first ever video game. Belle the Bear allows guests to find their way around the tech city of Bellevue, Washington state, in a “Frogger-style adventure game”. The five highest scorers in the US will win prizes, with the top scorer receiving a three-night stay at W Bellevue.

FCS Computer Systems has launched a guest service management solution for hotels. The new FCS Connect allows hotels to take voice and image requests from guests via SMS, with full translation capabilities. W Hotels, the former Starwood luxury brand now operated by Marriott, has unveiled plans to make its debut in Melbourne in 2020.

Once open, W Melbourne will feature 294 rooms and suites, a bar and restaurant, spa, fitness centre, indoor heated swimming pool and approximately 1,200m² of meeting space, including a ballroom. Designed by New York-based SHoP Architects, the property will also feature many of the ultra-modern aspects that identify the W brand.

“Melbourne, with its vibrant music, emerging fashion and bold street art, is a destination made for the W brand,” said Anthony Ingham, W Hotels’ global brand leader. “Located in the epicentre of the city, W Melbourne will embody the city’s creative spirit while showcasing the brand’s bold and energetic take on luxury.”

Melbourne marks the second W Hotel planned for Australia, following W Brisbane which is scheduled to open its doors in 2018. Globally the brand now has a portfolio of 50 hotels, including the recently opened W Las Vegas and W Goa and the soon-to-open W Shanghai.

W Hotels, the modern luxury brand originally conceived by Starwood, has made its debut in India.

Now operated by Marriott International, the brand has launched the W Goa, a new beach resort in the popular Indian coastal state.

Located on Vagator Beach, approximately 27km from Goa’s Dabolim Airport and close to Chapora Fort, the new resort is spread across 10 hectares of seafront land, amongst palm trees. It features 160 rooms, suites, chalets and villas, plus a spa, fitness centre, outdoor pool, kids’ club, business centre and 675m² of function space.

There are also four F&B outlets: the international Kitchen Table and pan-Asian Spice Traders restaurants, beachfront Woo Bar and Rock Pool, an outdoor grill overlooked by Chapora Fort.

This marks the first of three W Hotels being planned for India, with the W Delhi NCR scheduled to open in Gurgaon in 2018 and the W Mumbai expected to launch in 2019.

W Hotels Worldwide, now part of Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR), has made its much anticipated Las Vegas debut with the opening of W Las Vegas on 1st December 2016. W transformed a 289-room tower of SLS Las Vegas, providing guests a brand new elevated hotel-within-a-hotel experience, located on the emerging North End of the Vegas Strip.

“If there are two things in this world that were truly made for each other, it’s W Hotels and Las Vegas,” said Anthony Ingham, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide.  “After nearly two decades of anticipation, W Las Vegas will show guests a different side of the strip, offering an unexpected and irreverent twist on the typical Sin City experience.”

Built by PENTA Building Group designed by Gensler in collaboration with AvroKO Hospitality Group, guests arrive at the Welcome Desk and are invited into the brand’s signature Living Room to mix and mingle. Evoking a sense of Vegas glamour, the Living Room bar was inspired by casino gaming tables, while intimate seating nooks nod to the hotel’s original mid-century incarnation as the Sahara. Behind the bar, a neon art “desert garden” by artist Keith Lemley dramatically transforms the space from day to night.

Bold and energetic, the 289 rooms at W Las Vegas were living-room-night-2-low-res
designed by Philippe Starck in collaboration with Gensler.
Each room features a cheeky interpretation of luxury hospitality that Starck is known for, as well as the signature W bedding and sumptuous Bliss® bath amenities.  Decidedly chic, the hotel’s 2,382 square foot Extreme WOW Suite (designed by multi-talented artist Lenny Kravitz) adorns the top of the tower, and is highlighted by a spacious balcony with sweeping mountain views.

W Las Vegas remixes an iconic address with three floors (and 15,000 square feet) of brand new, state-of-the-art meeting and event space. The adjacent SLS Las Vegas hotel serves up an additional 80,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, to play host to any size event.

The rooftop WET Deck is an elite oasis for guests, providing an intimate escape to see and be seen in a private cabana or at the destination bar.  Maximizing its North Strip location, the WET Deck offers panoramic views of the Stratosphere and desert mountains. Art from local and international muralists and photographers converge to make the space truly unique.  The AWAY® Spa, located on the hotel’s second floor, offers signature spa treatments for guests to detox (before a welcomed retox).  Designed in pure white, playful elements such as l
arge faux-pearl key rings, lockers featuring bright pink interiors, and artful hand sculptures, add a touch of whimsy.  FIT, the 24-hour fitness center at W Las Vegas, offers guests access to state-of-the-art fitness equipment in an energetic space.

Guests of W Las Vegas are able to indulge in award-winning restaurants throughout SLS Las Vegas. The property boasts seven eateries, including on-site coffee shop The Perq; Northside Café & Chinese Kitchen which is available 24 hours a day; Bazaar Meat by José Andrés; Katsuya; Cleo; 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria; and Umami Burger, Beer Garden& Sports Book.

Marriott International has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its luxury brands, including significant growth in Asia Pacific.

Providing an update of its high-end brands at the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) in Cannes, Marriott revealed that its portfolio of luxury hotels doubled following its recent acquisition of Starwood, and that it is now planning to open almost 30 additional hotels in 2017 under its eight luxury brands.

New luxury Asia Pacific hotels scheduled to launch next year will include Ritz-Carltons in Langkawi and Astana, St Regis hotels in Shanghai and Changsha, W Hotels in Shanghai and Brisbane, Southeast Asia’s first Edition hotel in Bangkok, a Luxury Collection property in Singapore, and a JW Marriott resort on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc.

“The unmatched breadth and depth of our luxury portfolio uniquely positions us to cater to the increased demand of the rapidly-expanding cadre of affluent travellers,” said Tina Edmundson, Marriott’s global brand officer. “With luxury travel up nearly 50% over the past five years, we see a long runway for growth at the high-end and have a world-class, dedicated luxury structure in place to nurture and strengthen this coveted portfolio of eight diverse luxury brands.”

As well as six brands already mentioned, Marriott operates the ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Bulgari hotel concepts.

Starwood has launched its first-ever ‘W Sound Suite’ in Bali.

Located at the W Bali Seminyak, the Sound Suite is a private music studio and writer’s room that can be used by professional recording artists, studio musicians and producers, as well as hotel guests. The concept has been launched in partnership with Coca-Cola.

“W has a long history of musicians staying, playing, and celebrating at our hotels,” said Anthony Ingham, W Hotels’ global brand leader. “We know that inspiration can strike at any moment, so the W Sound Suite is today’s tech-savvy version of scribbling lyrics on a cocktail napkin. Bali, a vibrant and creative hub often called ‘the alternative Ibiza’, is the perfect setting for our first music studio.”

W Sound Suites are in part the brainchild of the W brand’s North American music director, DJ White Shadow, who is best known for his work with Lady Gaga. He has been working with W to identify the best sound equipment and studio layout for professional use.

“While traveling around the globe making music for the last decade, I’ve run into many challenges including costly studio rentals, the risk of disturbing other guests, and not being able to find a suitable place to listen to or create music,” said DJ White Shadow. “We dreamed up an environment for musicians to create that is convenient, stylish and functional. I’m thrilled to partner with the equally innovative team at W Hotels – there isn’t another brand that could bring this idea to life on such a global scale and in such an innovative way.”

Following the launch of the first W Sound Suite in Bali, Starwood will roll out the concept to more W Hotels, including those in Hollywood, Barcelona and Seattle.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts achieved a record year of portfolio growth in 2015, having signed 220 new hotel agreements and opened 105 new properties.

The year was marked by a series of portfolio milestones, including the opening of Starwood’s 700th hotel in the Americas, its 250th hotel the EMEA region, 300th hotel in Asia Pacific, 150th hotel in Greater China, 200th Four Points by Sheraton hotel, 100th Aloft and 100th Luxury Collection hotel.

“This was a remarkable year of record-breaking growth for Starwood Hotels & Resorts with the highest number of both signings and organic openings in any single year in the company’s history,” said Simon Turner, the US-based company’s president of global development.

“We continued to enjoy balanced growth across both mature and emerging markets and across all of our brands, with a notable increase in the number of conversions. Approximately one-third of our openings in 2015 were conversions.”

The mid-market segment drove last year’s signing in 2015, accounting for slightly more than 50% of total new contracts. Four Points by Sheraton continues to maintain the company’s largest pipeline, while the Aloft brand experienced a 65% year-on-year increase in signings.

In the luxury sector, Starwood penned deals for 29 new St Regis, Luxury Collection and W hotels, an increase of almost 40% over the prior year. And in the upscale segment, Sheraton’s signings that were also up more than 40%.

Starwood also launched the Tribute Portfolio in 2015, along with the new Sheraton Grand sub-brand, while the Design Hotels collection was added to Starwood’s booking channels.

But the major development for Starwood in 2015 was the announcement that Marriott International will purchase the company for US$12.2 billion – a deal that is expected to close later this year.

“As we begin 2016 and work towards our merger close with Marriott to become the world’s largest hotel company, we will continue to vigorously compete in the marketplace, deliver value to our owners, delight our guests and grow our brands into new markets around the world,” said Thomas Mangas, Starwood’s newly-appointed CEO.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has revealed 2014 was its fifth year of increased deal signings as it looks for expansion across the globe this year.

The hotel giant opened 74 hotels last year but also signed 175 new hotel management and franchise deals during the year, an increase of 15% on 2013.

This year the group will look to continue its growth with its mixed management and franchise approach.

“Our balanced growth approach continued in 2014 with consistent, organic signings across all nine of our brands,” said Simon Turner, president of global development for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. “Looking ahead, emerging markets remain a focus for us, but recovering economic conditions and increased availability of financing have also led to strong growth in North America and Europe.”

The firm plans to open 25 luxury hotels in the next two years under the St. Regis (Istanbul, Macao, Dubai, Mumbai), The Luxury Collection (Nanjing, San Antonio, Broumana) and W brands (Amsterdam, Goa).

Growth is also expected to continue for its upper upscale brands with new Sheraton openings planned in Samoa, Romania and Iraq, while Le Meridien will open in Bangladesh, Bhutan and India this year.

The Aloft brand will reach 100 properties this year with newcomers in China, Munich and Stuttgart, while new eco-focused brand Element Hotels will open in China, London, Amsterdam, Boston and Philadelphia.

Starwood’s designer luxury brand, W Hotels, has launched in Beijing.

The new W Beijing Chang’an has opened its doors, marking the 45th W Hotel worldwide and the second in mainland China after the W Guangzhou.

“The opening of W Beijing Chang’an is a milestone in the W brand’s dramatic growth around the globe,” said Paul James, global brand leader for W Hotels, St Regis & Luxury Collection. “Long on our shortlist of the world’s most dynamic destinations, we are proud to bring W to Beijing.”

Located on Beijing’s main Chang’an Avenue, the new hotel offers 349 rooms and suites, all featuring tablet devices to control the lighting and mood, 48-inch LED TVs and Bluetooth sound systems with Bose speakers. All king bed rooms and suites will also feature round bathtubs.

Meanwhile, the hotel’s top room category, the ‘Extreme Wow Suite’ covers 345m² and includes a two-metre-wide circular bed and a jacuzzi positioned next to a ceiling-to-floor window.

W Beijing Chang’an

Other facilities at the hotel include a top floor lounge, Chinese restaurant, a spa, fitness centre and heated indoor pool.
For the corporate and events market there is also nearly 1,500m² of function space, including the 518m² ‘Great Room’.

“Starwood’s growth in China has been nothing short of tremendous,” said Qian Jin, Starwood’s president for Greater China. “In 1985, Starwood’s legendary Sheraton brand first debuted in Beijing, kicking off the growth trajectory. Today, we’re excited to offer a cutting edge hotel brand to this vibrant market, and we are confident that W Beijing will raise the bar on stylish luxury accommodations in the heart of the city.”

W Beijing Chang’an joins Starwood’s portfolio of nearly 140 hotels currently operating in Greater China. But this is expected to grow rapidly, with 130 more hotels in the pipeline, including new W Hotels in Changsha, Chengdu, Shanghai, Suzhou, Sanya and Shenyang.

Starwood is bringing its contemporary W Hotels brand to Phuket.

The company has revealed plans for the W Retreat Phuket Phang Nga Bay, which will become Thailand’s third W when it opens in January 2018, following existing properties in Bangkok and Koh Samui.

Located on the island of Koh Yao Noi, in Phang Nga Bay, the W Retreat will feature 79 standalone villas, the smallest of which will cover 155m². All villas will feature private outdoor areas and plunge pools, as well as views over Phang Nga Bay.

Facilities at the resort will include two restaurants, a bar, lobby lounge, swimming pool, fitness centre, a spa with six treatment rooms and 120m² of meeting space.

Guests will arrive on the island either by boat or helicopter.

“We are very excited to bring the iconic W brand to Phang Nga Bay in southern Thailand as we continue to grow our resorts portfolio in the country,” said Stephen Ho, Starwood’s president for Asia Pacific.

“As proven by the success of W Bangkok and W Retreat Koh Samui, W Retreat Phuket Phang Nga Bay will further leverage Thailand’s exemplary service in hospitality with the W brand’s cutting-edge design and whatever/whenever philosophy to provide a new style of modern luxury in the local hotel scene.”

With W Retreat Phuket Phang Nga Bay in the pipeline, Starwood expands its presence in Thailand 23 properties under eight of its nine brands. And this October 2014, Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa will be added to the company’s nationwide portfolio.

In Phuket, Starwood currently operates three properties: Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort, Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa and The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa.

Starwood is planning to expand in Thailand's resort destinations, such as Phuket

Starwood Hotels & Resorts is continuing to expand its portfolio in Thailand, as the country’s tourism recovery gathers pace.

At an event in Bangkok on Friday, Starwood’s president for Asia Pacific, Stephen Ho, confirmed that the company has signed its first W Resort in Phuket, the announcement of which comes just a week after the unveiling of plans for the first Sheraton in Koh Samui.

Stephen Ho
Stephen Ho, Starwood’s president for Asia Pacific

And talking to Travel Daily, Ho said that despite the country’s recent problems, he has confidence in long-term future of Thailand.

“We came into Thailand in the ’70s and this has been one of the key markets we’ve been focusing on,” Ho told Travel Daily in an interview. “We’re doing a lot to increase our footprint and we’d like to do more. We have development teams visiting here almost every month. We are always on the look-out for new opportunities.”

And with Bangkok now containing eight of Starwood’s nine brands, Ho said the company would focus more on expanding in the country’s resort destinations.

“In Bangkok… we’re still continuing to look for new opportunities. Other than that, we’re looking to develop in resorts. For example, we don’t have a Sheraton in Phuket and that’s definitely something we’ll be pursuing very aggressively.

“We’re actually the largest resort operator in Asia Pacific, with over 70 resorts in operation. So that is a key element.”

In terms of the recent downturn, Ho said that while Starwood’s Thai occupancy has suffered, hotels in the country’s resort destinations have “rebounded very quickly”.

“Obviously when martial law was declared [we saw a downturn], but also the recovery has been very fast. Once people realised that the new regime wasn’t doing too bad a job, [they] started to get more confident.

“Even in Bangkok we’re seeing a very strong recovery. We worked with our global sales office in putting [together] a very robust recovery plan for Thailand. And I think that once martial law is lifted we will be very bullish about Thailand,” he added.

One key factor that limited the damage in Thailand for Starwood was its brand recognition in China. As Thailand’s largest visitor source market, mainland China now contributes a “low double-digit” percentage of Starwood’s occupancy in Thailand. And Ho revealed that Chinese business, especially in resort destinations with direct connectivity, has been “extremely resilient”.

Starwood was the first international hotel brand to enter mainland China when it opened a Sheraton in Beijing in the 1980s, and the company has since generated a strong following among Chinese guests.

“It’s helped us not only in Thailand, but everywhere. We want people to know our brand, so when they travel that gives us the advantage to be able bring people here as well, both for MICE business and leisure. We have been able to build this into the recovery plan,” Ho said.

Outside Thailand, Ho also confirmed that Starwood is looking at “several opportunities” to open its first hotel in Myanmar.

“We’ve been looking at the market since it opened up and we have development people going there regularly. We’re looking at several opportunities. Obviously we’d like to get in as soon as possible,” he said.

In terms of possible destinations, Ho added that Yangon was “obviously the top choice” but that he is also looking at “several potential projects… throughout Myanmar”. These are likely to be upper-upscale properties, under the Sheraton, Westin or Le Meridien brands.

“We hope that in the not too distant future we can make an announcement,” Ho said.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has revealed plans to open four more luxury hotels in China this year.

The company is planning new additions to its St Regis, Luxury Collection and W Hotels brands in 2014, continuing a major growth strategy that will see the company double its Chinese luxury portfolio by the end of next year.

“The rapid growth of Starwood’s luxury brands in China reflects a robust demand for high-end hospitality from an increasingly affluent market, where domestic travel continues to thrive,” said Paul James, global brand leader for St Regis, Luxury Collection & W Hotels. “This year, we are thrilled to open four luxury hotels in distinct Chinese destinations for a new generation of global guests, who are more often travelling across our luxury portfolio.”

This year’s openings include the 279-room St Regis Chengdu, which is due to open in late summer 2014, and the 353-room W Beijing Chang’an, which will mark the contemporary brand’s debut in the Chinese capital.

Two more Luxury Collection hotels are also scheduled to open this autumn, in Hangzhou and Dalian. The Azure Qiantang Hotel will offer 205 rooms on the banks of Hangzhou’s Qiantang River, while The Castle Hotel will feature 359 rooms, suites and residences in Dalian, set in a building designed to replicate a Bavarian castle.

As well as these four hotels, Starwood has firm plans to add 15 more luxury hotels in China in the coming years, comprising seven St Regis properties, five W Hotels and four additions to its Luxury Collection.

And with a significant range of facilities in an “urban resort” style complex, the 240-room W Singapore also has many of the features of an integrated resort. These include two restaurants, a bar, the ‘W Lounge’ experience, pool deck and bar, Away Spa, and more than 1,500m² of meeting and event space.

All guest rooms come equipped with 40” LED HD TVs, surround sound systems, high-speed Wi-Fi, and MP3 player ‘plug-and-play’ device.

“Singapore is a dynamic city and global hub for the world’s jetsetters,” said Vincent Gillet, Global Brand Leader for W Hotels & Le Méridien. “W Singapore will bring a new hotel experience to Sentosa through cutting-edge design, buzzing nightlife and restaurants, and innovative happenings that showcase what’s new and next for both locals and guests alike.”

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has seen a 57% surge in net profits in the first half of 2012.

The US-based hotel giant generated net profits of US$250 million in the first six months of the year, compared to US$159m in the same period last year – a result boosted by a 22.5% jump in revenues, which surged from US$2.72bn to US$3.33bn.

Starwood’s CEO Frits van Paasschen said he was pleased with the results. “We kept up our momentum in the second quarter, despite a choppy global economy. Our revPAR (revenue per available room) grew 6.9%, with occupancy over a healthy 71%. Despite the uncertain global environment, we expect the trends we saw in our business for the past quarter to continue through the second half of the year,” he remarked.

For the first six months of the year, Starwood’s global occupancy climbed 2.5% to 68.5% while average daily rates (ADR) crept up 1.2% to US$170. The rise in rates was led by the W Hotels brand, which increased 3.6% to average US$270, followed by Four Points which climbed 2.3% to US$117. Average rates at the group’s flagship Sheraton brand increased 1.6% to US$147.

By region, gains in emerging markets offset a European decline. RevPAR in the Asia Pacific region climbed 6.4% following rate and occupancy growth, while in Latin American revPAR jumped 10.4%. RevPAR at Starwood’s European hotels however, dived 5.7%, largely due to a 5.8% drop in ADR, which fell from US$224 to US$211.

For the remaining six months of 2012 Starwood has predicted revPAR growth in the region of 6-8%, with management and franchise fees expected to increase 9-11%. Expenses are also expected to rise however, in the region of 4.5%.

“Our approach to an uncertain global marketplace is to be both smart and bold. What we mean by ‘smart’ is having a business model, balance sheet, and cost structure that can weather economic turbulence. At the same time, we are being bold in our efforts to grow our footprint in the right way, and to invest in building guest loyalty to gain more than our fair share of business,” van Paaschen commented.
