Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of its flagship Wyndham brand in Singapore with the 591-key Peninsula Excelsior Singapore, a Wyndham Hotel. The hotel is slated to celebrate its soft opening in July 2023, and marks Wyndham’s commitment to continued growth in the country.

Following the completion of a multi-million-dollar refurbishment, the Hotel will be officially launched as the Wyndham Singapore at its grand opening in 2024. With this flagship property, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts maintains its strategic and operational presence in Singapore with the debut of an upscale hospitality brand – especially at a time when bleisure travel continues to grow across the region, coupled with the recovery of Singapore’s growing tourism industry which is expected to reach between 12 to 14 million international visitors and USD14 billion.

Peninsula Excelsior Singapore, a Wyndham Hotel is within walking distance to Singapore’s civic district – the birthplace of Singapore’s historical, architectural, and cultural heritage. Overlooking Singapore’s renowned skyline, the Hotel boasts a view of both the Marina Bay and Singapore River, as well as the tranquil greenery of Fort Canning Hill.

Hospitality 360 Sdn Bhd (“H360”), a Malaysian hotel management and consulting company announced the signing of a strategic partnership with Wyndham Hotels and Resorts (“Wyndham”) to expand their portfolio of hotels, resorts, and serviced apartments across Malaysia.

As H360 and Wyndham memorialize their common objective to continue their commercial dealings and deepen their business relations, we are witnessing the beginning of a new chapter in their illustrious partnership. Under the terms of their partnership agreement, H360 will deliver at least 15 hotels signed as franchises under various Wyndham-owned brands over the course of the next six years.

To mark this illustrious partnership, there were several Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and agreements for H360 to manage, under various Wyndham brands, 4 hotels and luxury serviced apartments in Sabah.

The MoUs were signed between Wyndham and the developers of the hotel properties, namely, Jesselton Newcity Development Sdn. Bhd; and Sumbangan Aru KK Sdn. Bhd; for the properties that will in turn be managed as Wyndham Grand, Dolce by Wyndham, and Ramada by Wyndham brands. Construction of these hotels, totalling more than 2000 rooms will commence in phases starting in 2023 and is expected to complete by 2027.

In addition to the pipeline of current signings, H360 through the newly announced strategic partnership with Wyndham also has other hotel properties in the pipeline. They are namely our future flagship property, the Wyndham Grand TRX KL with more than 190 rooms, developed by Core Precious Development Sdn Bhd in which the construction is underway and due to complete by Q4 2023; and the newly built Ramada by Wyndham The Straits Johor Bahru with more than 190 rooms which will be operational by Q1 2023.

Furthermore, the under construction, 85 rooms luxury serviced apartment project Isola KLCC, developed by OCR Berhad, the152 rooms Shahzan Kuantan in Pahang, the 204 rooms Trinidad Suites Puteri Harbour in Johor and three more properties namely the 88 rooms Lisbon Melaka, the 158 rooms Trigo Kuala Lumpur, and the 90 rooms Shahzan Frasers Hill are all expected to sign to Wyndham’s Trademark Collection brand. Looking ahead and through the various agreements, we target to achieve a portfolio of approximately 5000 rooms all over Malaysia by 2027.

Group chief executive officer of Hospitality 360 Sdn Bhd, Dato’ Indera Naresh Mohan said, “This is an exciting time for us as we expand our hotel management portfolio to more locations around the country. The properties we will manage are targeted at different segments of the market, from leisure travellers and families to business travellers. We are looking forward to working with Wyndham to ensure all our guests get a full and holistic experience in our managed properties.”

Vice president of Development, South East Asia & Pacific for Wyndham, Matt Holmes said: “By signing this strategic agreement with Hospitality 360 Sdn. Bhd, we continue to grow our operational presence in Malaysia. This move will position Wyndham strongly to tap on the exponential rise in travel demand which has accelerated since early 2022 as borders reopen across key markets in Asia Pacific. Looking ahead towards the future, we are excited and happy to strengthen the partnership with Hospitality 360 in Malaysia and deliver our iconic ‘Count on Me’ service to our business and leisure guests.”

At its first global Town Hall event of the year, Wyndham affirmed its ongoing commitment to support human trafficking awareness and prevention efforts. It also announced its donation of one million Wyndham Rewards points to Polaris, a leader in the global fight to eradicate human trafficking.

Polaris acts as a catalyst to systemically disrupt human trafficking by helping survivors restore their freedom, preventing more victims, and leveraging data and technology to pursue traffickers wherever they operate. It uses the rewards points in part for short-term stays for victims so they have a safe place to sleep while waiting for a spot in a shelter to open.

“Having a safe place to stay, even just overnight, is a vital first step in helping sex and labour trafficking survivors break free from their situations,” said Emily Tracy, chief development officer for Polaris, who received the points donation at the event. “The donation – one of many over the course of our 10-year partnership – will help survivors to move forward with their lives.”

“Educate hospitality community.”

Geoff Ballotti, president and chief executive officer at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts said: “In recognition of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we want to reinforce our partnerships with Polaris and other important anti-trafficking organizations, while continuing to educate the hospitality community on how to help identify and report trafficking activities.”

In addition to Polaris, it supports the work of other organisations to promote awareness on how to identify and report suspected instances of human trafficking, including the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, End Child Prostitution and Trafficking, and International Tourism Partnership.

Janus, the Roman god in which January is named after, has two heads, looking at opposite directions. It’s simultaneously learning from the past and planning for the future. So, what does this mean for the hotel industry? Absolutely nothing. But we can learn by looking at the past, don’t we?

Mergers, acquisitions, and billion-dollar funding rounds — so much have happened in 2018 and so I’ve thought of compiling them into one bite-sized piece.

Up and coming

OYO 105 La Maison d Ilona, Jakarta
OYO 105 La Maison d Ilona, Jakarta

As I’ve mentioned in Champions of travel: Who won 2018 according to the TD team, my pick as the brand to watch for is OYO Rooms, founded by Ritesh Agarwal. The Indian startup is hailed as South Asia’s largest and fastest-growing brand, with over 12,000 asset owners spread across six countries including India, China, Malaysia, Nepal, the UK, the UAE and more recently, Indonesia.

With more than USD 1 billion in the bank — you can bet OYO will push through with its new year’s resolutions.

Acquisitions

Hyatt acquires Two Roads Hospitality

Alila Yangshuo - Two Roads Hospitality
Alila Yangshuo – Two Roads Hospitality

In 2018, we’ve seen companies purchase smaller groups to expand its portfolio and enter new markets. One of which is Hyatt Hotels Corporation, which announced to acquire Two Roads Hospitality and its 85 properties in eight countries. Through the USD 480 million acquisition, Hyatt will expand its presence into 23 new markets.

Wyndham purchases La Quinta Holdings

Ramada by Wyndham Lisbon

In January last year, Wyndham Worldwide Corporation announced that it has entered into an agreement under which it will acquire La Quinta’s hotel franchise and hotel management businesses for USD 1.95 billion in cash. With the acquisition, the group seeks to expand 21 brands with over 9,000 hotels across more than 75 countries.

Minor International takes over NH Hotels

Anantara Riverside, Bangkok, a Minor Group property
Anantara Riverside, Bangkok, a Minor Group property

Back around June of last year, Thai-based hotel operator Minor International purchased HNA Group’s 25.2% stake of NH Hotels Group for USD 729 million. Moving forward to October, Minor International has won acceptances for 47.76% of NH Hotels Group, bringing its total stake to 94.14%.

NH Hotels’ portfolio includes around 380 hotels in Europe and Latin America, while Minor has 161 properties across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia.

Global takeovers

AccorHotels

AccorHotels - Novotel
AccorHotels – Novotel

AccorHotels, already one of the world’s largest hotel companies — promises to be even bigger in the next few years. All in 2018, the group filed a tender offer to purchase the remaining shares of Orbis, one of the largest hotel operators in Central and Eastern Europe; announced the completion of its acquisition of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts; and announced to open 500 hotels in South America by 2020. This puts the company on track of opening one hotel every single day by the following year.

Marriott International

London Marriott Hotel County Hall
London Marriott Hotel County Hall

Also dominating the industry is the hospitality juggernaut Marriott International. Last year, the group managed to partner up with Alibaba to introduce facial recognition in China (proving its strength even after its online gaffe with the government); and announced to upgrade its portfolio, with over 30 projects in the MENA region and 35 in Europe. The group also appointed Publicis Groupe as its media representative and unified its loyalty programmes.

Hilton

The Hilton Effect

Hilton, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, has no plans of slowing down, with an ambitious plan of growing its brand in Southeast Asia. The group currently has 40 hotels in operation with 50 properties in its pipeline. Over the next few years, Hilton will be opening milestone properties across the region.

Other noteworthy groups are the US-based Dream Hotel Group, which aims to triple its global portfolio by 2022; Rotana, which plans on expanding in Africa, the Middle East and Europe; and Best Western, which is ready to open a number of properties in key Asian markets.

Wyndham makes its inaugural launch in Palembang, Indonesia with the opening of Wyndham Opi Hotel, the new 5-star hub of the city.

Major sporting events have always had a correlational effect to hotels’ ADR. We’ve seen it in PyeongChang 2018, as South Korea welcomed approximately 1.57 million visitors; we’re about to see it happen at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, in which Moscow expects more than a million fans to watch the games; and in Palembang, Indonesia, where Wyndham has opened the city’s first 5-star hotel, just in time for the 2018 Asian Games.

“The spotlight will be on Palembang during the 2018 Asian Games and we couldn’t be more proud to showcase our latest five-star hotel to athletes, dignitaries and guests travelling for the sporting event,” said David Wray, vice president acquisitions and business development, Wyndham Hotel Group, South East Asia and Pacific Rim.

The 2018 Asian Games will be held from 18 August to 2 September. Athletes will compete in 47 sporting disciplines, attracting more than 15,000 delegates from 45 countries.

Wyndham Palembang - Junior Suite
Earth and neutral tones dominate the Junior Suite

The new Wyndham Opi Hotel Palembang is located in the Jakabaring precinct, adjoining the OPI mall complex, featuring retail outlets, a cineplex, local eateries and a department store. The upscale hotel will offer direct access to the Light Rail Transit that links guests to the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport, and the Jakabaring Stadium in just about five minutes.

With 257 rooms and its strategic location, Wyndham Palembang will be a 5-star hub in the city. Six room categories are available, from Superior Rooms with ergonomic workspaces to the Presidential Suite with two bedrooms and an open-plan living room with living, dining and kitchen spaces.

The hotel’s design features neutral earth tones, accented with a variety of textures and dark bronze contrasts.  And to connect guests with the destination, each room is decorated with a songket, a traditional textile made by local Palembang artisans.

The Deluxe King Room with views of Palembang

To hold big events, Wyndham Palembang also offers the city’s largest convention facility. The business hotel offers two ballrooms and six meeting rooms totalling 2,260 square metres. The largest pillarless ballroom seats up to 2,500 delegates and is equipped with smart audio-visual technologies that support a variety of lighting installations for events ranging from exhibitions to weddings. The six smaller flexible meeting rooms can be reconfigured for seminars, board meetings or social events.

Wyndham Palembang’s ballroom is the largest in the city

Located at lobby level, the 9 Rivers all-day dining restaurant offers a sumptuous buffet offering a selection of traditional Indonesian dishes, an egg station, pancakes and other international favourites. The Lotus Lounge offers a tapas menu and an extensive range of beverages in an area with flexible seating for casual business meetings, afternoon tea, or drinks after-hours.

“Leading into and beyond the Games, Wyndham Opi Hotel Palembang is the perfect base for both business and leisure”

Wray concluded: “Leading into and beyond the Games, Wyndham Opi Hotel Palembang is the perfect base for both business and leisure. The hotel’s stunning design, excellent leisure and conference facilities, and exceptional location will offer guests an unparalleled hospitality experience.”

Wyndham has become the latest global hotel group to launch a “collection” – a group of properties that retain their independent identity whilst harnessing the support and benefits of a large chain.

The company’s new Trademark Hotel Collection is designed for “upper-midscale and above” hotels. At launch, the brand’s pipeline includes more than 50 hotels, including existing properties and new-builds in “top urban markets around the world”.

The collection becomes Wyndham’s 19th hotel brand. It will be positioned alongside the company’s modern lifestyle brands, such as Tryp by Wyndham and the newly-acquired Dazzler and Esplendor.

“The Trademark Hotel Collection is the next step in our mission to flip the script on existing expectations and champion all hoteliers by offering them an independent choice outside of the current luxury and upscale options available,” said Lisa Checchio, Wyndham’s vice president of brand marketing and insights.

The majority of the world’s major hotel groups have launched a high-end soft-brand in recent years, such as Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Hilton’s Curio Collection, AccorHotels’ MGallery, Carlson Rezidor’s Quorvus Collection and Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. But these are almost exclusively targeted at the top-end of the market; even Best Western’s BW Premier Collection is classed as an upscale brand. Wyndham’s Trademark Hotel Collection breaks the mould by targeting the upper-midscale sector.

Trademark logo“The explosion of soft brands in the last several years has been focused on luxury and upscale hoteliers – with demand still growing at a rate of nearly 20% – leaving a market void for independent hoteliers in the upper-midscale segment,” said Chip Ohlsson, Wyndham’s chief development officer.

“Wyndham is the only hotel company positioned to champion upper-midscale-and-above independent hoteliers so they can compete in an ever-changing distribution environment with brand-backed support and guest recognition and loyalty.”

Trademark will allow hotel owners to access the company’s global support network, including sales, revenue management, training, marketing and distribution. Member hotels will also participate in the company’s loyalty programme, Wyndham Rewards.
