YTL Hotels and Marriott International have announced the signing of a master development agreement to bring the AC Hotels by Marriott brand to Malaysia for the first time. The AC Hotels by Marriott brand will be exclusive to YTL Hotels for the whole of Malaysia.

The signing of this agreement is one of many key milestones in the partnership between YTL Hotels and Marriott International as it continues to grow from strength to strength. AC Hotels by Marriott embraces European design and style across its international portfolio of distinctive properties in Europe and North and Latin America.

Dato’ Mark Yeoh, executive director of YTL Hotels said: “The 24-year long relationship we enjoy with Marriott International has yielded many valuable opportunities and successful partnerships for YTL globally. We currently operate 12 Marriott properties in our portfolio of 36 hospitality assets and the figure continues to grow steadily. We are now the first in Malaysia to bring in AC Hotels by Marriott and we look forward to be in the forefront of developing this urban lifestyle brand throughout Malaysia.”

The two companies had also signed franchise agreements to strategically convert three established YTL Hotels properties to the AC Hotels by Marriott brand – Vistana Kuala Lumpur Titiwangsa, Vistana Kuantan City Centre and Vistana Penang Bukit Jambul. The prime hotels in Penang and Kuantan will be Marriott International’s inaugural debut in the two cities, offering business and leisure travellers a thoughtful approach and seamless guest service.

Malaysian hotel group YTL Hotels has now opened the floating spa at Monkey Island Estate resort in Bray-on-Thames, UK. The spa is located on a bespoke crafted barge moored on the banks of the island and houses three treatment rooms, a themed wheelhouse reception and an elixir bar.

Inspired by the monks who once inhabited the island, the treatments and spa experiences have been choreographed to fit the setting and concept. Each spa treatment will begin with a sensory ritual and tasting of one of the monk-brewed ancient herbal tonics.

The spa is also peppered with touch points that celebrate the power of water, taking guests on holistic voyages through the history of the island and the river Thames. The spa team has partnered with British spa brand Moss of the Isles to create the bespoke treatments.

Monkey Island Estate is the latest addition to YTL Hotels’ growing UK portfolio, a collection of hotels which already includes The Gainsborough Bath Spa, Threadneedles, The Glasshouse and The Academy.

Marriott International and YTL Hotels have announced agreements for new hotels across Asia, strengthening both companies’ presence in the world’s fastest growing region.

During an official ceremony held at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, the two companies agreed to develop two new luxury hotels in Malaysia under the JW Marriott and EDITION brands and signed memorandums of understanding for two hotels in Japan, an EDITION and a W Hotel in Niseko Village, Hokkaido.

Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Francis Yeoh, managing director of YTL Group of Companies said: “We’re delighted to expand our hospitality footprint in Asia through Marriott International. Our 20-year relationship has been pivotal to the growth of YTL Hotels in Malaysia, Asia and in the UK. We currently have 11 Marriott International hotels in our portfolio of 32 hospitality assets, making us one of Marriott’s largest owning companies with one of the longest relationships in Asia. Through illustrious Marriott International brands such as The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott and Autograph Collection, we seek to offer our guests experiences that will make memories for a lifetime.”

In Malaysia, YTL Hotels’ second JW Marriott hotel will be strategically located near KL Sentral, an exclusive urban centre in the country’s largest transit hub, offering guests seamless connectivity and easy access to the city’s premier business and leisure destinations. The EDITION in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s first, will boast a prestigious address neighbouring the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), home to the Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin towers. The 350-key property will deliver distinctive rooms that ensure the finest contemporary luxury experience.

Craig S. Smith, president and managing director for Marriott International Asia Pacific, said: “We are pleased with today’s announcement, which advances our goal of doubling our luxury presence in Asia Pacific. With the addition of these hotels to our system, our guests will have even more luxurious opportunities to explore Malaysia and Japan, two exciting and diverse travel destinations.”

In Japan, the EDITION and W hotels will further complement the luxury hotel experience in the fully integrated Niseko Village. YTL Hotels’ prominent presence in the powder mecca of Japan – Niseko Village in Hokkaido – is growing with the upcoming development of a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. The highly lauded ski resort currently features two existing hotels with ski-in ski-out accommodation and a collection of bespoke townhouses. It is world-renowned for its dry champagne powder snow in the winter and in the summer, guests are awed by the breathtaking wildlife, fresh harvest and a wide array of outdoor recreation including golf, trekking and horse riding.

Separately, YTL Hotels celebrated the re-launch of the 578-room JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur on 5 December after having undergone a complete refurbishment. The hotel combines contemporary elegance with the convenience of being located right in the heart of the city’s Golden Triangle. The hotel is now open to guests, offering luxurious rooms and facilities.

YTL Hotels has acquired three properties in Edinburgh, Berkshire and London, strengthening the company’s market position in the United Kingdom.

Edinburgh's Glasshouse Hotel.
Edinburgh’s Glasshouse Hotel.

“We have worked hard to build a brand that travellers from this region have grown to associate with best in class luxury accommodations, especially with The Gainsborough Bath Spa and Niseko Village properties that are very popular amongst Singaporean travellers,” said Dato’ Mark Yeoh, executive director of YTL Hotels. “With Singaporeans taking up to six trips a year and yet still feeling vacation-deprived, we are well‐placed to offer a sense of home when Singaporeans are abroad.”

The property acquisition in Edinburgh attests to YTL Hotels’ long‐standing relationship with Marriott International since 1995 through the ownership, management and future development of seven properties: Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel, Brisbane Marriott Hotel, Melbourne Marriott Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, The Ritz‐Carlton Koh Samui – Thailand and the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Niseko Village – Japan.

The Glasshouse Hotel, a part of the Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, is already an award-winning 77‐room luxury boutique hotel with a secret rooftop garden, and was once the Lady Glenorchy Church built in the mid-19th century. The iconic hotel with its unique 230-year history sits at the heart of the city centre providing easy access for business and leisure travellers.

The second acquisition, Monkey Island, is a centuries-old retreat in Bray-on‐Thames, Berkshire, that nestles on an island in the River Thames surrounded by stunning gardens and accessible only by a footbridge or boat. The village of Bray needs no introduction amongst the coterie of global gourmets, as it is possibly the only village in the world that lays claim to having four Michelin-starred restaurants and gastro-pubs.  The stately retreat will be redesigned by the award‐winning New York-based Champalimaud Design, which orchestrated distinctive interior design projects for The Gainsborough Bath Spa, The Green Leaf Niseko Village, The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, The Carlyle in New York and The Dorchester in London, to name a few. A 10‐minute drive from Windsor and less than an hour from central London, the revitalized estate will offer the perfect setting for weddings, getaways, spa retreats or just relaxed dining by the picturesque river.

The Academy Hotel, comprising of five restored Georgian townhouses combined into one charming hotel, is centrally located in London’s West End, within a stone’s throw from The British Museum, fine restaurants, and world‐famous shopping streets. The boutique hotel will undergo a full refurbishment that is reflective of YTL Hotels’ steadfast commitment to respect the cultural and natural heritage inherent in each property it owns and operates, with exacting quality standards, service and operational excellence, as evidenced by its resorts on Gaya Island Resort, Tanjong Jara Resort in Malaysia, and Spa Village Resort at Tembok Bali.

These latest acquisitions mark YTL Hotels’ global portfolio expansion to a total of 29 assets with a footprint across Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, France, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Niseko Village, YTL Hotels’ integrated ski resort in Hokkaido, has unveiled plans to open new ski lifts and runs for the 2016-17 winter season.

Due to be operational by December 2016, the Village Express and Upper Village Gondola lifts will stretch for a total of 1,130 metres. The Village Express will be an 830-metre-long high-speed lift comprising six-person chairs and eight-person gondolas. A new mid-point station will be built beside the main village area, close to the resort’s Asian tapas bar.

The Upper Village Gondola meanwhile, will be a new 300-metre gondola that will provide to access a beginner’s ski area on the Green Leaf Niseko Village slopes. It will also allow guests to connect to the top of the Village Express lift, providing access to restaurants, shops and hotels.

In addition, a new ski run will also be created within the village along with two “magic carpet” surface lifts for beginners. And another new 1.2km ski run will be developed from the top station to the Village Express lift base. The course will run from the Green Leaf Niseko Village and Kasara Niseko Village Townhouse, alongside the retail and dining area and over a road via a ski-bridge.

“This investment represents the next step within the master plan to develop Niseko Village into one of the world’s greatest all-season resorts,” said Shiau Wee Long, CEO of Niseko Village. “As an integrated all-season resort, Niseko Village is committed to provide all the existing accommodations, shopping, entertainment and dining facilities including future developments within the resort with the ultimate ski-in ski-out accessibility, day and night during winter.

“The new lift infrastructure will run throughout the year giving travellers added reasons to return during summer for sightseeing and activity offerings within Pure at Niseko Village, our nature and adventure park, from 2017 onwards.”

Located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, at the base of Mount Annupuri, Niseko Village covers almost 900 hectares of skiable terrain, along with hotels, spa and onsen facilities, a dining and retail village and luxury residences.

The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui, located on the northern tip of the island, will mark the company’s second property in Thailand, while the Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, will be set at the base of Mount Annupuri, in the Niseko ski resort area of Hokkaido. A new-build resort, Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui will feature approximately 187 rooms and pool villas in a beachfront setting, along with a collection of dining, wellness and recreational facilities.

“When styling and designing a Ritz-Carlton, we are extremely conscious of the surrounding and abundant natural beauty which makes people fall in love with the destination,” said Herve Humler, Ritz-Carlton’s president & chief operating officer. “We want guests to enjoy and discover the extraordinary diversity and beauty to be found in this part of Thailand.”

With only 50 guest rooms, the ski-in and ski-out Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Niseko is scheduled for completion in 2020.

“Ritz-Carlton Reserves [are] one-of-a-kind boutique resorts positioned in unique settings, each with a distinctive personality and sense of place reflecting its history and culture,” explained Humler. “Niseko is a natural choice to complement our existing exclusive portfolio.”

Mark Yeoh, executive director of YTL Hotels, commented; “We have had a long-standing relationship with Marriott International since 1995. This expansion into Thailand and Japan is a continuation of our shared success over the years. The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui and the Reserve in Niseko Village will elevate the stature of the two highly sought-after tourist destinations.”

The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui will become the brand’s second Thai resort following Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Krabi, while the Niseko property will join Ritz-Carlton’s existing collection of four Japanese hotels in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okinawa.

The hotel is the first in Bath to offer guests access to the city’s natural thermal waters in its spa. The hotel is a member of the The Leading Hotels of the World.

Spa Village Bath boasts its own private water reserve that bubbles to the surface at 47 degrees centigrade. An exclusive Spa Suite and two further spa rooms will offer in-bath access to the thermal waters via a second tap.

New York-based design firm Champalimaud Design has designed the 99-room hotel, which will also house Michelin-starred Austrian chef Johann Lafer’s first restaurant outside Germany.

The hotel will offer a variety of meeting and banqueting facilities. With a tented ceiling and views overlooking the thermal spa pool, the 92-square metre Chapel is the hotel’s largest space and can also be linked with the Chapel Terrace to create a larger event space. The Somerset Room sits on the ground floor of the hotel accommodating up to 70 people for luncheons, dinners and meetings. This room also boasts views over the spa. Both rooms feature state-of-the–art AV and conference facilities and are fully licenced for civil wedding ceremonies.

To celebrate the hotel’s soft opening, The Gainsborough Bath Spa has announced that all hotel revenue on 1 July, the hotel’s opening day, will be donated to local charity, St John’s Charity.

Malaysia’s YTL Hotels has announced the launch of a new luxury hotel brand, Kasara.

The company is calling Kasara a “collection of unique and luxurious hotels, resorts and residences in exotic locations in Asia and beyond”. Initial destinations will include the Japanese ski resort of Niseko and the Southeast Asian islands of Koh Samui and Pulau Tiga, in Thailand and Malaysia respectively.

“It is with great excitement that we now reveal Kasara,” said Luke Hurford, YTL’s vice president of sales & marketing. “The privilege of early morning access to hidden powder stashes guided by a local Niseko Village expert, native fishermen in long-tailed boats serving up a sumptuous seafood feast in Koh Samui, holistic immersion into natural mud baths in Borneo and free-diving into the aquamarine waters of the Coral Triangle – these are some of the authentic experiences which await the Kasara guest.”

YTL said the new brand will offer “luxury, authenticity and timelessness” in a range of destinations, from beaches to rainforests and mountains.

“At Kasara, local influences, culture and traditions are interwoven with these luxuries to create compelling, standout experiences that resonate with the destination, embodying the balance of style and substance which affluent travellers are increasingly searching for,” the company said in its launch statement.

The first property to open under the new brand will be the Kasara Niseko Village Townhouse, which is located within YTL’s Niseko Village complex in Hokkaido. Scheduled to launch on 1 December 2014, it will sit alongside the Hilton Niseko Village and Green Leaf Niseko Village in the ski resort.

And YTL said Kasara will also launch properties in Koh Samui and Pulau Tiga “in the near future”, although details of these properties are not yet available.

YTL currently owns and manages a collection of hotels, resorts and spas in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, France and the UK.

Malaysia’s YTL Hotels has unveiled a new image for its Vistana brand.

The company launched Vistana Hotels in the 1990s, with properties in Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan and Penang. And now, all three properties have been revamped under the new branding with a range of new services and facilities.

“The Vistana brand’s new ethos is ‘Vibrance, Verve and Value’, which promises a modern and comfortable ambience coupled with great services, offered at competitive prices,” the company said in a statement.

The Vistana Kuala Lumpur Titiwangsa, Vistana Penang Bukit Jambul and Vistana Kuantan City Centre hotels have all now been revamped, with new coffee bars, cafes and IT hubs offering business solutions. Vistana is YTL’s city hotel brand and forms part of YTL’s wider portfolio of 24 properties across the globe.
