Thai Lion Air has started operating from its new base at Hat Yai Airport, southern Thailand.
The new carrier has commenced three weekly flights between Hat Yai and Medan, using its new ATR72-600 aircraft. This makes Hat Yai the airline’s second base in Thailand, after Bangkok Don Mueang Airport. Thai Lion also connects Bangkok and Hat Yai with a Boeing 737-900 aircraft.
“Rather than travel to Jakarta and then fly to Bangkok, people from Medan can fly to Hat Yai and then connect to a flight to Bangkok,” said Thai Lion Air’s executive managing director, Andi Burhan.
In addition to the launch of the new Medan flights, Thai Lion also now offers domestic services from Hat Yai to Surat Thani, the gateway to Koh Samui, and Hua Hin, the resort town of the Gulf of Thailand. Another international route will soon be launched connecting Hat Yai with Subang, near Kuala Lumpur.
“The decision to launch services from Hat Yai to Medan and Subang airport in Kuala Lumpur is part of our commitment to help develop passenger services between ASEAN countries,” Burhan added.
Thai Lion now operates a fleet of four B737s and one ATR72-600, but by the end of 2014 it aims to double its B737 fleet. From Bangkok, the airline also operates direct flights to Chiang Mai.
