The Thai government has announced plans to roll out a series of new local tourism shops across the country.
The new ‘Pracharath Sookjai’ shops will combine tourist information services and the sale of local products, with the aim of spreading the benefits of tourism to more parts of the country. The stores will be located at 148 PTT petrol stations across Thailand.
“We are committed to help materialise this wonderful project for the benefit and well-being of the Thai people through financial support on establishing the 148 shops, public relations activities, and facilitation of tourist information as well as conduct training for the shop assistants,” said Dr Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
“TAT domestic offices nationwide will be tasked to help select quality local products for the shops,” he added.
The Pracharath Sookjai concept was launched on the basis that both domestic and international tourists spend an average of 26% of their total trip costs on goods and souvenirs, and 30% on food and beverages. And 70%, according to the TAT, prefer to travel by car.
PTT will allocate areas within its 148 petrol stations rent-free for a three-year period. The first Pracharath Sookjai shops are expected to open in April 2016.
