Thailand is targeting 16.5 million international visitor arrivals and US$21 billion in tourism revenues this year, TD’s Anil Mathur reports. The Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Suraphon Svetasreni, told the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Phnom Penh last week that the country achieved a 12% increase in arrivals last year to 15.6 million visitors, despite the political protests and adverse travel advisories it suffered in April and May. Khun Suraphon said that the increased capacity of low-cost carriers into the country, as well as growth in traffic from India, Malaysia and the Philippines would contribute to the gains. He also noted that Thailand has a high rate of repeat visitors - 81% in the ASEAN region.
