UK newspaper The Independent has announced the launch of The Independent Travel Awards, which will celebrate businesses revolutionising the travel industry by providing exceptional experiences and excellent value.
From 15 August, The Independent will be asking its well-travelled readers to submit their favourites on a number of different travel-related categories including their preferred travel company (whether a specialist in tailor-made trips or a provider of off-the-shelf packages) and airlines via a dedicated channel on the Independent’s website until 11 September.
Readers’ nominations will be used to create a shortlist that will be put to a panel of independent industry experts, including writer and broadcaster Ben Fogle, Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler and former managing director of P&O Cruises Carol Marlow, with winners announced at an exclusive ceremony at the luxury Corinthia Hotel in central London. Some 14 awards will be presented in categories including Best Airport and Airline; Place to Stay (whether a luxury hotel or a B&B) and Cruise Line along with a Readers’ Choice award; celebrating the figure who’s done more for travellers than any other, inspiring or enabling people to make great journeys.
Simon Calder, travel correspondent at The Independent, said: “The Independent has a proud tradition of highlighting the best in travel, both in the UK and abroad. So we have a passionate, well-travelled readership, who will play a vital role in helping us to celebrate the businesses that are delivering world-class travel experiences and providing great value for money.
“We are really excited about these new awards; giving our readers the opportunity to share their wealth of travel knowledge and experiences whilst recognising those travel businesses with integrity and exceptional customer service and value at their core .”
