An extension of the world’s highest rail line, China’s Qinghai-Tibet Railway, will be completed by 2015, Xinhua has reported. The new 253km extension, which will connect Lhasa with Tibet’s second largest city, Xigaze, will pass through 90km-long Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon and will run close to Mount Everest. Construction of the CNY13 billion (US$2 billion) project started in September last year, while a second extension, linking Lhasa with Nyingchi, is also being planned.
