Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji fish market has reopened its popular frozen tuna auction to tourists, following a four-month closure in the aftermath of the 11 March disasters. Kyodo News reported the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market as saying that tours of the auction area restarted this week, but have been reduced to around 80 visitors per time, down from 140, to avoid overcrowding.
Visitors were banned from the auction on 14 March due to fears of aftershocks. The re-admittance of tourists might not be welcomed by market workers however, who have claimed that the hoards of early morning visitors – often still drunk following a night out – are a nuisance.
