Türkiye’s medical tourism witnessed surge, and Dr. Salih Onur Basat, a plastic surgeon, noted that the demand for aesthetic surgeries will surge even further in 2024.

Türkiye’s health tourism sector is making remarkable strides. According to the Tourism Sector Assessment 2023 report by EY (Ernst & Young) in November, interest in health tourism in Türkiye continues to increase. Almost 750 thousand people visited the country for health services only in H1 2023.

Dr. Salih Onur Basat, a respected plastic surgeon in Türkiye, delves into the reasons behind Türkiye’s burgeoning success in this field, particularly in aesthetic surgeries. “I anticipate that the increasing demand for Brazilian butt lift , tummy tuck, liposuction, rhinoplasty, and breast aesthetic surgeries in Turkey will persist into 2024.”

Türkiye is fast becoming a hub of excellence in elective surgery

Dr. Basat explains, “Türkiye has become a global destination for high-quality, affordable elective, reconstructive surgery, thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities and the expertise of our medical professionals.” He highlights Türkiye’s health infrastructure’s high standards and commitment to elevating quality with skilled doctors and healthcare personnel.

A comprehensive approach to post-pregnancy body restoration

The Mommy Makeover, comprising breast surgery, tummy tuck, and liposuction, is trendy among international patients. Dr. Basat emphasizes its tailored approach, addressing unique post-childbirth body changes. He advises patients on the importance of rest and adherence to postoperative guidelines to ensure optimal recovery. Türkiye’s cosmetic surgery offerings go beyond the Mommy Makeover. Dr. Basat notes the popularity of breast aesthetics, BBL, liposuction, tummy tuck, and rhinoplasty.

International patients seeking a seamless experience in Türkiye: opt for registered clinic

“To achieve desired results, it’s crucial to select a specialized surgeon and have realistic post-operative expectations,” Dr. Basat advises those considering surgery in Türkiye. Looking ahead, Türkiye’s health tourism sector is focused on its ambitious goal of US$ 20 billion, propelled by its robust health infrastructure and the excellence of its medical staff.

As Türkiye continues to excel in health tourism, offering world-class cosmetic and medical procedures, it stands as an attractive destination for patients worldwide seeking quality, affordability, and expertise in healthcare.

Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) announces the launch of a new certification program for medical travel facilitators to assist in building patient trust. GHA’s Medical Travel Facilitator Certification focuses on validating the capacity of medical tourism facilitator companies to provide appropriate services to clients that enhance safety and patient experience along the entire medical travel patient journey as appropriate to the facilitator company’s business model. Medical travel facilitators have for many years played an important role as intermediaries between patients and healthcare providers.

Their services include providing information about the medical provider, handling travel logistics, and ensuring a smooth care journey.  For many patients, the medical travel facilitator is the main motivator or reason why they choose a specific destination provider. However, medical travel facilitation is an unregulated industry; therefore, it is not always easy for patients to distinguish between a facilitator with experience and high-quality partnerships versus another that has a beautiful website but little experience – or worse, is not focused on the patient’s best interests.

According to Wiliam Cook, Global Healthcare Accreditation’s director of business development and marketing:  “The Medical Travel Facilitator Certification provides a trusted third-party validation that demonstrates to patients and healthcare providers that a facilitator’s services meet the highest standards and align with international best practices. Patients no longer have to rely on anecdotes or unverified testimonials to make medical travel decisions, they can look to the Medical Travel Facilitator Certification as a metric to evaluate and validate a facilitator’s capacity to provide the requisite services to ensure an excellent patient care journey.”

The Medical Travel Facilitator Certification is conducted conveniently online, includes access to training, and evaluates a facilitator across 15 key competencies, including business ethics, sustainability and quality improvement, financial transparency, client services, oversight of contracts and agreements, and risk management, which underline a company’s capacity to deliver excellent services.

For medical travel facilitator companies, the benefits of this certification include: Enhance patient care experience along the entire care continuum. Provide a framework on which facilitators can implement or strengthen sound operational policies, procedures, and processes that align with global best practices. Offer a third-party validation that builds trust and confidence with prospective clients and health buyers. Increase brand awareness and visibility. Mitigate risks and vulnerabilities for clients and for the facilitator business.

“Expect an increasing number of patients to look for accreditation or certification as the determinant in selecting a medical travel agent,” said Bill Cook. “GHA’s Medical Travel Facilitator Certification assures patients that a facilitator has been vetted by a globally recognised third-party accreditor, affirming that the company has the required protocols, processes, and staff training to deliver a safe and high-quality treatment journey and experience.”

The post Dental tourism market to reach USD 6.7 Bn in 2022 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

The global dental tourism market is expected to reach a valuation of USD 6.7 Bn in 2022, with sales growing at a 13.6% CAGR over the forecast period. These insights are based on a report on Dental Tourism Market by Future Market Insights(FMI).

Rapid adoption of technologically advanced medical equipment in emerging economies will steer the growth in the market, with the market size reaching USD 24.3 Bn by 2032.  This is amid rising adoption of advanced dental equipment in emerging economies.

Increasing costs of healthcare and dental services in developed nations is compelling consumers to adopt dental tourism. This trend is propelled by the lack of insurance coverage for major elective dental surgical procedures in various countries.

Moreover, the cost of treatment in countries such as India, Thailand and China is relatively lower than the countries in North America and Europe. This is reflecting a surge in dental tourism cases from Europe and North America into the developing economies. The process of obtaining a medical visa for such procedures is relatively quicker and easier, thus promoting the flow of patients into foreign countries for treatment.

“Rising adoption of technologically advanced medical equipment in emerging economies, along with increasing government0backed investments in the development of the healthcare infrastructure in these countries is expected to drive the market in the forthcoming years,” says the research analyst.

Promotional strategies such as the launch of online campaigns displaying cost-effective services provided by health institutions are contributing to the growth in the market. Delivery of undivided attention in terms of care, as well as provision of affordable accommodation beckons the consumer’s interest for taking up on attractive medical tourism packages, identifying treatment options as well as recreational choices.

With growing lifestyle related diseases and unhealthy dietary intake, the incidence of dental disorders is on the rise. High prevalence of diseases such as dental caries has led to a spike in dental restoration procedures. Thus, increasing burden of dental abnormalities is propelling the interest in cosmetic dentistry, thereby creating opportunities for growth in the market.

In terms of providers, the hospital chains segment is projected to account for 47.2% of the total market share in 2022. India will emerge as a lucrative pocket, accounting for 53.9% of the South Asia dental tourism market share in 2022. Hungary will account for a dominant share of the Europe dental tourism market, with sales growing at a 12.3% CAGR over the forecast period. Total sales in the Turkey market are anticipated to hold 66% of the Middle East and Africa market share in 2022. Europe is slated to lead the market, accounting for 31% of the global dental tourism market over the assessment period.

South Korea is the fastest growing aesthetics market in Asia-Pacific (APAC) and is expected to retain its position in the future augmented by continuous innovation, growing demand for beauty, and increased spending on aesthetic enhancement, says GlobalData, a leading data, and analytics company.

GlobalData’s research reveals that South Korea’s aesthetic device market, which accounted for 11% of the APAC in 2021, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7% between 2022 and 2030.

Ayshi Ganguly, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “In South Korea, external appearance is considered very important to attain societal and professional success, and this creates pressure on both women and men to transform their physical appearance. The demand for affordable and quality cosmetic procedures and products is leading to advancements in this field.”

For instance, Ilooda Co.,Ltd., which manufactures and develops professional medical equipment, has recently received the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Secret Duo, a device to treat scars. This non-invasive aesthetic device is not only affordable, painless, and offers quick results but also treats the aesthetic damage caused by monkeypox and encourages collagen synthesis to fill the scar area with new skin, without harming it thermally, claims the company.

In addition to physiognomy, social media and K-pop are also playing a major role in driving the aesthetics market in South Korea as they influence individuals to enhance their beauty to look like their favorite celebrities. Eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty are the most common procedures performed in Korea.

Ganguly concludes: “The availability of new cosmetic treatment options and appealing discounts are making South Korea a preferred destination for medical tourism as compared to other parts of the world.”

According to a new study by Future Market Insights (FMI), the medical tourism market is set to grow at 12% CAGR in 2022.  As per the Thailand Board of Investment, more than 50 applications for investments, worth over USD 400 million were submitted during the first half of 2020 to introduce a range of novel measures, accelerating investment in the medical sector.

Between 2020 and 2030, the market is forecast to exhibit 12.3% CAGR, as the number of medical tourists is expected to rise at 11% over the same period. Factors such as increasing healthcare costs in the West, increasing incidence of chronic ailments, and surging demand for various cosmetic procedures have been resulting in the soaring medical tourism.

While healthcare efforts remained focused on managing the COVID-19 crisis, reversing growth projections to an extent for 2020, with the situation stabilising, treatment of life-threatening diseases and chronic ailments will begin gaining traction 2021 onwards.

The U.S. is expected to lead in terms of healthcare travel spending, however, in the coming years China’s spending is forecast to surge considerably. Among services offered under medical tourism, therapeutic services are highly sought-after. Wellness services too are gaining traction as an increasing number of medical tourists are seeking meditation and wellness retreats. Phone and online booking will remain more preferred modes of booking for medical tourism. Medical tourism is often sought for cancer and cardiovascular treatment. Besides this, cosmetics and bariatric procedures are very popular among medical tourists.

Proactive steps taken by government and non-government organisations will enable the medical tourism market sail despite losses incurred during COVID-19. Medical tourism market is expanding at a fast rate. Tier 1 companies such as AsklepiosKlinikenGmbH, Bangkok DusitMedical Services, Fortis Healthcare Limited, Apollo Healthcare, BumrugrandInternational Hospitals, ChristusMughuerza, and others contribute nearly 6% to 17% of revenue generated by the market.  Tier 2 companies operating in the market include Asian Heart Institute, Prince Court Medical Center, ShouldiceHospital, Gleneagles Hospital, ClemenceuMedical Centre, AnadoluMedical Centre, and others.

The Union Health Ministry is all set to launch ‘Heal in India and Heal by India’ – a new portal which is likely to be announced by the Prime Minister (PM) on August 15 that aims to give impetus to medical tourism. Developed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, the portal will have a repository of healthcare professionals, hospitals services to help overseas patients seeking medical help in India.

With the two top-of-the-line health initiatives, the government’s immediate focus is to push medical tourism in India via its upcoming one-stop tech-heavy portal Heal in India. Through another project, Heal by India, it seeks to encourage Indian healthcare workers to go abroad and serve patients, globally. Under Heal in India, via an online portal, foreigners or those seeking medical help will be able to locate the list of hospitals in the country available to provide their choice of medical treatments

It will provide details about the treatment package cost. They will also be able to apply for visas from the same platform. Hospitals and visa offices will get in touch with the patients once they receive the request through the online platform.

“As Covid-19 seems to be waning, the focus is to push medical tourism in India. We have the best hospitals, highly skilled doctors, and affordable treatment. Then what is holding us back from being the world’s best medical tourism destination,” a government official said.

Under Heal in India initiative, Indian healthcare workers will be provided an opportunity to move to foreign countries to pursue their professional goals.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that to promote the traditional medicine industry, the country will soon launch ‘AYUSH mark’ which will give authenticity to quality AYUSH products made in the country. Speaking of “Heal in India”, he also announced that a special visa category will be created soon for those who want to travel to the country to avail of AYUSH therapies.

PM Modi was speaking after the inauguration of the three-day Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar in the presence of Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tredos Ghebreyesus. ‘AYUSH’ denotes Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. India has a Central Ministry dedicated to these alternative medicine systems.

“India will soon introduce the AYUSH mark, which will give authenticity to quality AYUSH products of the country. The mark will be given to products vetted using the latest technology. This will give confidence to people of the world that they are purchasing quality AYUSH products,” Modi said.

“Traditional medicine helped increase tourism in Kerala. This power is in the whole of India, in every corner of India. ‘Heal in India’ can become a big brand of this decade. Wellness centers based on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, etc., can be very popular,” the Prime Minister said. The special “AYUSH visa” will help those who wish to seek traditional treatments in India, he said.

Holiday seasons are coming. Are you getting prepared to take a break this year and enjoy a vacation with your loved ones? Or are you one of those people who’ve been thinking about the perfect getaway to unwind and de-stress? No matter your reasons, there are many things you need to consider for an enjoyable trip, including your travel essentials.

Besides your requirements, you should prioritize your travel cushions. In some cases, travelers often have difficulty getting quality sleep due to uncomfortable sleeping positions. Hence, it would be best to choose the perfect types of pillows you could use while on the road.

Particularly, a Travel Pillow could improve your sleep quality while on a trip and help you obtain restorative sleep at night. To know more about these great bolsters, check out this article.

Travel Pillows For A More Enjoyable Trip

Traveling with their loved ones is a fun experience for everyone. This is a chance for people to spend more time and make memories with their family and friends, thus, it’s essential to be in your best state to enjoy every moment of the trip. However, if you’re sleep-deprived and tired, you might skip the fun part and spend your vacation sleeping.

In such aspects, having a soft, fluffy pillow is what you need to sleep peacefully at night and ensure that you’re fully energized for the day. Believe it or not, a travel pillow could significantly improve your sleep quality while on a trip and help you get the rest you need. Even if you’re in an upright sleeping position, these cushions could help you obtain restorative sleep at night.

For better ideas, here’s a list of some important facts about travel pillows you need to know:

  • Many travelers often complain of neck pain, sore muscles, and back pain due to sleeping upright while on the road. Being in a cramped space has made such conditions common.
  • In most cases, people may experience cramps, muscle stiffness, and muscle strains after being in tight-fitting seats in airplanes or other vehicles they use when traveling. These conditions may also be consequences of hyper-extending one’s neck when sleeping.
  • Despite being typical scenarios for some people, those conditions may still cause significant discomfort. Hence, an efficient travel pillow is needed to aid their sleeping position.
  • To better prevent the risks of body aches and neck pain, it’d be better to switch to a travel pillow rather than your standard cushion. Primarily designed to help travelers sleep more comfortably while on the road, these bolsters could help provide gentle pressure to one’s neck, correct spine alignment, and lessen the risks of neck pain, stiffness, and headache.
  • Aside from using travel pillows, you may also consider taking sleep supplements to boost your sleep quality, including Natural Sleep Aid and other sleeping pills.

Best Types Of Travel Cushions

Upon knowing what a travel pillow is, the next thing you might be wondering about is the types of travel cushions that you can use to relieve early signs of neck pain and how they could enhance your sleep quality while traveling.

To help you more, listed below are some of the most popular types of travel pillows for travelers:

  • Neck Pillows

Commonly known as neck roll pillows, these bolsters are recognized for their ability to alleviate pain and body aches by providing the right amount of pressure to one’s neck and shoulder and molding perfectly to their neck area.

Moreover, neck pillows are distinguished by giving off different feelings of firmness and fluffiness, providing the best combination for the perfect sleeping cushion. Even if you’re a back, stomach, or side sleeper, you can benefit from these bolsters in more ways than one. Plus, a neck cushion is ultra-compressible, dust-mite resistant, and hypoallergenic, making it a safe option for people with allergies.

One of the best features of a neck pillow is it contains solid pieces of dense memory foam that could make for more comfortable and convenient use. This pillow might be a perfect choice for travelers looking for a durable cushion with excellent contouring properties.

  • Latex Bolsters

Are you looking for a type of travel pillow that could make you feel calm and refreshed even in your sleep? If so, then a late bolster might be the perfect option for you. For starters, these bolsters are widely known for being naturally breathable and having incredible innovative pillow technology.

Since they have loose fillings, these bolsters could increase airflow so people can sleep comfortably while on the road. They also don’t have to worry about night sweating and overheating, as these pillows could absorb heat and produce cooling effects. Also, latex is naturally hypoallergenic, making it resistant to dust mites, mold, and microbes.

  • Memory Cushions

Aside from latex bolsters, another ideal alternative for a travel pillow is a memory cushion. One of the primary characteristics that make these bolsters unique from ordinary pillows is their efficient conforming properties that make for a cozy feel.

Compared to traditional bolsters, memory cushions could offer tremendous pressure relief to users and provide a neck support. These pillows are made of memory foam consisting of polyurethane—a type of plastic that can also be found in other products like sofas, mattresses, spray foam, and insulation.

Memory pillows are widely recognized for being adjustable and elastic, which means they could change shape when under pressure. But, what’s good about them is that they would still return to their original form when the pressure is gone. Memory pillows also have soft covers that can adjust to suit one’s preferences to support their neck and head when sleeping.

  • Buckwheat Pillows

For people who want to try something new for their travel pillow aside from the conventional ones, a buckwheat pillow might be the perfect alternative. Believe it or not, these types of bolsters could do wonders in your body and boost your sleeping patterns.

Buckwheat pillows are filled with thousands of small buckwheat hulls encased in hard outer casings. These hulls are commonly known under their scientific name Fagopyrum esculentum—a particular type of fruit that originated in Japan. These bolsters, otherwise known as Sobakawa, could significantly improve sleeping behavior and correct spine alignment. They’re also believed to regulate one’s natural sleep-wake cycle and enhance their circadian rhythm.

Plus, a buckwheat pillow is heat-resistant, hypoallergenic, and highly durable, making it the best option for travelers. If you’re wondering about how an actual buckwheat travel pillow looks like, you can check out this video:

  • Ultralight Cushions

If you’re looking for a classic type of pillow to take on your trips, you can opt for a traditional-style ultralight cushion. These bolsters are known for providing support to one’s shoulder and head and ensuring comfortable cushioning to the neck. Ultralight cushions are also distinguished for being extremely durable, adjustable, and taken on multiple kinds of trips.

Since they’re inflatable, you won’t have to worry about carrying a bulky pillow around during your trip. Instead, you can inflate them using a device and bring them on long flights or backpacking trips. If you don’t need to use them, you can deflate the air inside these pillows and fold them into tiny pieces.

Whether you’re sitting upright in the backseat, traveling by land, or riding a plane, ultralight pillows could help you sleep comfortably.

Essential Considerations When Buying Travel Pillows

Purchasing your next travel pillow isn’t as easy as it may seem. You need to consider several aspects to ensure finding the correct type of pillow that could suit your needs. This is also to ensure putting your money to good use and avoid wasting it on the wrong pillows.

For more ideas, continue reading below:

  • Consider The Right Timing

Before purchasing any travel pillow, one of the essential aspects you must consider is purchase timing. Do you need the pillow now? What characteristics of pillows are you looking for? How can you benefit from a particular type of cushion? These are some of the questions that most users often ponder upon.

In some cases, people tend to replace their pillows when they don’t serve their purposes anymore and start to feel saggy and lumpy. They may also buy a replacement when their pillow fillings begin to fall off after a series of washes.

Also, if your pillow hampers you from getting restorative sleep at night, then that might be the right time to replace them. Not only that, but old pillows may contain bacteria and germs that may induce allergic reactions to users, so you must also consider that one.

  • Assess Your Sleeping Position

Aside from the timing, it would help to consider your sleeping position. In some cases, people often need to replace their pillows regularly because they don’t suit their sleeping position. Although some people may consider this aspect as trivial compared to other things, identifying which type of sleeper you are is essential in helping you find the perfect travel pillow.

Moreover, it’s crucial to determine which type of sleeper you are to choose the best pillow. Although you might consider this aspect trivial compared to other things, your sleeping position may play a significant role in your sleep quality.

Ideally, it would be best to opt for cushions that could best suit your sleeping patterns. Whether you’re a back, stomach, or side sleeper, your pillow must suit your sleeping positions and bolster your sleeping habits. Suppose you’re in the middle of a trip, you might not be able to sleep in a comfortable place, so your pillow must be efficient in bringing you comfort even if you’re in an uncomfortable sleeping position.

  • Levels Of Comfortability

When choosing a travel cushion, you must know if they could offer tremendous levels of comfort and convenience upon using them or not. This ensures that your sleep quality improves after using them and helps you obtain deep, restful sleep at night.

For starters, almost every type of cushion could provide convenience to users, but their comfortability levels might differ at some point. With the wide variety of options to choose from, you won’t have difficulty choosing. Just make sure to select the most beneficial one.

As a rule of thumb, always choose a pillow that could offer relaxation impacts, promote sleep quality, correct your spine alignment, and has excellent conforming properties. You should also know if they could help you sleep peacefully while on the road and promote sleep quality.

  • Durableness

Are you tired of having to replace your pillows regularly? If yes, then you must consider the durability of your next pillow. In some cases, people may have to spend more money on replacement pillows since their old ones start to become saggy and lumpy. Although your cushion will expire eventually, it’s best to select one that could last longer than your previous ones.

To better prevent any hassle and save more money, you can consider choosing travel pillows that are highly durable, washable, and have secure zip locks. This is to prevent its fillings from falling off after some time and avoid sinkage.

  • Components

Travelers become more at risk of sleep deprivation and other sleep disorders due to using the wrong type of pillow. Due to that, it’s crucial to know if your prospective pillow could help resolve your sleep issues and if they’re safer to use. It’s because some pillow materials might not be ideal for people with allergies.

Typically, cotton, wool, and polyester are some of the most common materials used in cushions. Before purchasing a travel pillow, know first if it won’t cause textile dermatitis and other types of allergies. Most importantly, you must opt for dust-mite resistant bolsters, hypoallergenic, and contain 100% or organic compounds to ensure your health.

Lastly, look for a travel pillow that could suit your body’s needs, improve the circadian rhythm, offer soothing impacts, and help you sleep comfortably while on a trip

Bottom Line

Sleeping en route can be challenging for seasoned travelers, more so for first-timers. While this can be considered a downside of traveling, there are plenty of ways you can do to resolve your sleeping issues and ensure that you’ll enjoy your trip to the fullest.

For starters, you can consider using a travel pillow. These great cushions are known for providing comfort, warmth, and health advantages to users. Aside from that, their excellent contouring properties could help you sleep peacefully while on a trip. With the help of the abovementioned considerations and tips, making a sound buying decision could be much easier.

There has been a renewed interest in domestic travel as post-Covid and revenge travel pick up. Also, wellness has taken priority over any other form of leisure travel. This combined with the anticipated influx of foreign travel as India opens to international travellers once again is expected to give a filip to wellness tourism.

Away from the madding crowd of city life, set in Kundli on the outskirts of the capital of New Delhi, the idyllic Naad Wellness steeped in tranquillity, is a true detox retreat. Drawing in serious wellness seekers. the 39-room wellness resort’s ethos is based on the principles of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy.

According to Manoj Khetan, Co-Founder of Naad Wellness Centre, the property was designed to offer guests a wholesome wellness getaway closer to Delhi as flocking to the hills all the time might not be a long-term solution. “The guest experience begins with a one-on-one consultation with both Ayurveda & Naturopathy doctor. Our team of doctors then plan for a customized itinerary which is a combination of therapies, yoga, kriyas and nutrition. We heal the body, mind and spirit from within, addressing the root cause of any imbalance, rather than short-term solution,” he says. Khetan adds, “As the mental health and wellness industry picks up with renewed vigour, an ever-increasing number of travellers are choosing wellness getaways and staycations. We are following all safety protocols and our staff members are fully vaccinated.”

Detox. Destress. Repeat

Offering residential experiences that begin at three nights and go up to 28 nights, the stays here can include a combination of both experiential (Detox and Destress) and medical packages (Diabetes Management, PCOS management, Spine Care, Sports Injury Management etc).

The objective here is to heal the body, mind and spirit from within, addressing the root cause of any imbalance, rather than offering a superficial short-term solution.

Among the resort’s bountiful offerings are airy treatments rooms, swimming pool and a stunning yoga deck. The treatment menu runs the gamut from basic detoxes to emotional balancing, stress and burnout remedies, yoga and an optimal fitness programme. The latter is particularly well rounded, incorporating exercise (personal training, super-stretching, yoga) alongside the salt-cave sessions, massages and meditation and nutritional guidance.

Mind-rinsing sunshine for your wellbeing

The everyday pleasures at Naad go without saying: the warmth you wake up to each day with the hotel staff escorting you to your next destination, be it for yoga or the appointment with the doctor or therapist. It lets you know that you are not alone in your journey towards wellbeing. The hours and hours of mind-rinsing sunshine with yoga and of course, the balmy nights.

Food that heals

Not only does it help detox the body and the mind but even the food rejuvenates you. The restaurant here that focusses on ‘farm-to-table’ concept utilises fresh ingredients that are locally sourced, building the community and reducing its impact on the environment.

The Head Chef, Sekh Sahajan, is integrating the ancient Ayurvedic philosophy and modern scientific nutritional aspect of cooking method to provide Tridosha (vata, pita and kapha) balanced diet to attain wellness of the guest at all levels. Another interesting detail here is that the doctors at Naad themselves prescribe food on the basis of body constitution type and vitality of the guest, medical history and health objectives.

So, if you are craving for that perfect destination for a slow and joyful organic meal, try the perfect vegetarian platter, made with organically grown vegetables.

Salt cave therapy

From the Greek “halos” which means “salt” — uses dry aerosol micro-particles of salt or minerals inside of a large, arid space to simulate the microclimate of salt mines. Salt exposure as a therapeutic treatment developed after 1843, when Polish physician Feliks Boczowski noticed that his patients, who worked in salt mines, had no respiratory or lung problems compared to other miners. When other physicians started to notice the same, salt caves began popping up around Europe up as a therapy for lung ailments like pneumonia or bronchitis. And now, halotherapy has gained popularity all over the world.

Naad has recreated the micro-climate of salt caves and its Himalayan Salt Caves are based on the principle that when salt is heated, it becomes drier and kinetically more active. Benefits include enhancement of the mood, immunity and lowering stress. It is Ideal for those suffering from asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinus congestion and skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne

Yin-yang inspired reflexology track

The specially-designed reflexology track here uses the principles of nature for treating patients. The track forms a symbol of yin and yang with soft, smooth, pebbles of different sizes. The pebbles act as stimulants and massage the feet gently, thereby releasing stress and increasing focus. The doctors here also prescribe ‘earthing’ to patients, which means walking barefoot on a natural surface such as sand, grass or soil to reduce stress.”

Vaccine tourism – a double-edged sword? https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/vaccine-tourism-a-double-edged-sword/ Sun, 12 Sep 2021 23:07:18 +0000 https://www.traveldailymedia.com/?p=676988 The post Vaccine tourism – a double-edged sword? appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Vaccine tourism, where tourist hotspots are now offering COVID-19 vaccinations on holiday to attract visitors, is a double-edged sword as, while it could assist travel’s restart, it also raises the question of vaccine equity as it will further increase the divide between the wealthy and less privileged, according to data and analytics company GlobalData.

GlobalData’s Q2 2021 consumer survey found that only 6% of global respondents were not concerned about the impact of COVID-19*. The remaining 94% were ‘extremely’, ‘slightly’ or ‘quite’ concerned. With concerns high, the opportunity to get vaccinated has been seized by many. Lengthy delay or a general shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in some countries is leading tourists to travel to other destinations.

Johanna Bonhill-Smith, travel & tourism analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The wealthiest people in poorer countries will now be able to access vaccines first as they can afford to travel. This raises the argument that countries promoting vaccine tourism could be donating excess vaccine doses instead of giving access to wealthy tourists.”

Certain US states, Russia, the Maldives, and Indonesia are some of the destinations that are currently offering vaccinations to tourists. Some travel agencies have taken the opportunity to promote vaccine tour packages as a way to boost revenue. In Russia, for example, three-week tour packages priced between US$1,500 to US$2,500, excluding the price of the plane ticket, include vaccinations. However, with many destinations worldwide still struggling with low vaccine supplies, this is raising the question of vaccine equity.

According to GlobalData’s COVID-19 Vaccination Dashboard, the Democratic Republic of the Congo administered 3.5 vaccinations per 1,000 people as of 25 August 2021. In comparison, the US had administered 1,115 vaccine doses per 1,000 people on the same date. This highlights there is already a stark gap between different countries, and many are being left behind.

Bonhill-Smith adds: “One positive of vaccine tourism is that it could play a role in travel’s restart after the COVID-19 pandemic brought the sector to its knees. Global international departures declined by -72.5% year-over-year (Y-o-Y) and domestic trips by -50.8% Y-o-Y, according to GlobalData’s databases. This demonstrates the severe effects of the pandemic and why destinations worldwide are eager for a travel restart.”

Demand for wellness experiences in Singapore

The COVID-19 pandemic has given prominence to the importance of physical and mental health. In 2020, the global market for wellness tourism was estimated at US$735.8 billion, and is projected to reach USD1.2 trillion by 2027 – reflecting a growing demand for holistic wellbeing experiences that encompasses physical, mental and emotional wellness.

The first series will highlight interesting wellness offerings to be discovered within different Singapore neighbourhoods, while a second series will spotlight innovative wellness businesses on the ClassPass platform, the stories behind these businesses, and how these entrepreneurs turned their passions into possibilities. The videos will be featured across ClassPass and STB social media channels.

As Singapore prepares to reopen its borders progressively, the partnership will also showcase Singapore’s wellness and fitness offerings through engaging content to drive consideration amongst international visitors. To start, ClassPass will work with its partners to organise a series of wellness activations against the backdrop of popular landmarks in Singapore. The live-streamed activations will be complemented by a tour of the location where the activity takes place, showcasing Singapore to ClassPass’s global audience, allowing them to experience Singapore from afar.

Expansion of Singapore’s wellness offerings on the ClassPass platform

To cater to the rising demand for wellness offerings, ClassPass and STB will work together to expand the inventory on ClassPass to include a broader range of wellness experiences. ClassPass users can expect new wellness listings on the platform, ranging from complementary health therapies such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, to wellness-related attraction tickets and mental wellness services such as personal coaching and sound healing therapy.

From 27 August, interested businesses can sign up at https://classpass.com/partners/singapore-tourism-board or reach out to ClassPass at singapore@classpass.com for more information on the campaign. To encourage more Singapore businesses to come onboard, an additional sign-on bonus of SGD200 will be awarded to those that join ClassPass within the month of September, subject to terms and conditions.

Ms Ong Ling Lee, director, Sports, Singapore Tourism Board, said: “With rising interest and demand for wellness products and services both locally and internationally, Singapore is well-positioned to provide accessible and innovative wellness experiences that can rejuvenate and invigorate locals and visitors alike. This partnership with ClassPass supports our goal of establishing Singapore as a leading urban wellness haven. As travel gradually resumes, we hope it will boost our destination attractiveness and drive visitorship to Singapore, with visitors leaving feeling physically and mentally better than when they arrived.”

Theresa Kwok, ClassPass country manager, Singapore, said: “Singapore is a unique destination that offers a plethora of soul-nurturing fitness and wellness experiences. We are thrilled to work with the Singapore Tourism Board to showcase the great experiences this city has to offer, as well as draw more wellness travellers to Singapore through our platform. In other cities where ClassPass operates, we see members are prioritising their health and booking at 10% above their pre-pandemic usage, and we imagine that fitness and wellness will be top of mind for many people in Singapore as they are able to return to local in-person experiences.”

If you are planning on visiting Spain and its countless heart-stirring beaches that dot the nation’s coastline, we’d like to draw your attention to the Spanish Health Control Form — an entry requirement that you might miss, while being lost in your tropical vacation daydreams. Travelers arriving in Spain from abroad, regardless of nationality, age, or gender must complete the Health Form to gain entry into this Southern European country.

“What exactly is it?”

“When am I supposed to fill out the Health Control Form?”

“How do I fill it out?”

If these inquisitions spring to your mind right now, don’t worry! This article answers several such questions. Read on!

Who Needs to Fill Out the Health Control Form?

Let’s start off with getting the most pivotal question out of the way first. Everyone — yes, each person who intends to either enter or transit through Spain from any other country, regardless of their nation of origin, VIP/diplomat privilege, age, or any other consideration has to fill out the Health Control Form.

This is in compliance with the terms of Royal Decree-Law 8/2021, of 4 May, and the current Spanish legislative department that supervises pandemic control and health concerns. As per the new rules, COVID hazards must be controlled at all points of entry into Spain.

With the laws being stringently strict, you will be deported if you are unable to produce a Health Control Form upon your entry into Spain. What’s more, each form is non-transferable, linked to a single trip, and individual-specific.

However, in the case a visitor to Spain happens to be a minor or a specially-abled person, the form can be filled out by their guardian, who will be accountable for the correctness of the information provided in the FCS.

Are There Other Entry Requirements?

If you will be traveling to Spain after the 7th of June 2021 — which, probably is the case if you are reading this article — then yes, there are a few other potential entry requirements to be heedful of. Also, check out natvisa.com visa policy for Spain.

All travelers from a country or area that the Spanish authorities identify as a SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus high-risk zone must present a document declaring their vaccination against COVID-19.

If you are not vaccinated for the coronavirus, you need to show a COVID-negative diagnostic test report or a certificate of recovery if you have battled this disease.

That said, children under the age of 12 are not obliged to produce the aforementioned certificates or supporting documents.

Lastly, bear in mind that these entry requirement/s are additional to the Health Control Form, which is mandatory for everyone.

Can You Fill Out the Health Control Form Online?

Yes. The FCS is primarily an online form. You only need to provide information about yourself, your travel plans, and your health.

Once you have completed the Health Control Form, the online platform will generate a QR code, which must be displayed upon being requested by an official at border control when you arrive in Spain.

An important detail; passengers arriving in Spain via ferry need to fill out a different Health Control Form than the travelers who arrive via plane. If you are entering Spain through an airport, you can fill out the form online and if you are entering Spain through a seaport, you can fill out the form online as well.

Additionally, keep in mind that you have to fill out the Health Control Form for Spain no more than 48 hours prior to your arrival in the country. This will reflect in your QR code — it will be rendered invalid if it is generated at a time that precedes 48 hours before your entry.

Why Was the FCS Introduced?

Spain is quite popular as a supremely Elysian summer destination. In point of fact, it is the second most visited country in the world — the first being France.

The tourism-heavy attributes of this country led many to believe the tourists were the cause of the rapid spread of coronavirus in Spain. However, COVID-19 will not stop this Southern European destination from welcoming international visitors like every year.

Spain has taken masterfully effectual and functional measures in containing the spread of coronavirus and reinforcing these new health guidelines for incoming tourists is just a pandemic-containment policy.

All in all, the Health Control Form was introduced to act as a middle ground between outright banning the tourists from entering the country and allowing them to enter unhesitantly. The FCS proposal has helped Spain to maintain the tourist influx unaffectedly alongside keeping the local population safe.

Frequently Asked Questions about the FCS (Spain’s Health Control Form)

Are the nationals of other countries of the EU allowed to enter Spain?

Yes.

Are the nationals of non-EU countries allowed to enter Spain?

Based on the pandemic’s severity in other countries, Spain’s entry constraints are updated frequently.

Other than the EU states, Schengen members, and the United Kingdom, currently, the nationals of these countries can visit Spain: Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Canada, China, Colombia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Montenegro, Namibia, New Zealand, Qatar, Republic of Moldova, Republic of North Macedonia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Ukraine, and United States of America.

Note: All travelers from authorized countries who can’t produce the FCS form upon their arrival in Spain will NOT be allowed to enter.

Which vaccination certificates are deemed acceptable by the Spanish authorities?

If you arrive in Spain from a high-risk country, you will need to present your COVID vaccine passport or vaccination certificate in order to gain entrance into the country.

The vaccines that are deemed acceptable by the Spanish authorities are AstraZeneca, Janssen, Moderna, Pfizer, Sinovac, and Vero Cell.

However, since the official policies regarding vaccination requirements could change on short notice, we recommend that you check in with your local embassy or consulate for more up-to-date details regarding the subject.

Will I be quarantined upon arrival in Spain?

The visitors to Spain arriving from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, and Namibia need to quarantine themselves for 10 days even if they are vaccinated against COVID.

However, they will have the opportunity to terminate quarantine after the 7th day if they are able to display a negative coronavirus test result.

Health and wellness trends have become a much bigger part of our lives than ever before. Everything from our morning routines, to the way we travel, and how we work out has come under review – there’s been a wellness movement that’s well and truly here to stay.

With more people seeking open spaces and the great outdoors to practice wellness, trend data shows a huge uplift in searches around activities such as wild swimming and earthing. PaulCamper has put together a list of some of the wellness trends that are picking up in popularity for 2021.

Wild Swimming

Searches for “wild water swimming” have seen a 130% increase over the past 12 months worldwide, and in the UK, searches for “wild swimming Scotland” have risen by 900%.

This popular wellness trend encourages you to make the most of the swimming pools nature has on offer – glistening lakes, freshwater rivers and the open sea. It’s the physical sensation you get from wild swimming that’s said to be good for your mental well-being, giving you a refreshing shock to the system!

Earthing/grounding

Earthing or grounding refers to the act of connecting with nature through its electrical energy, and it’s much easier than it sounds. Earthing allows you to truly let go of day-to-day stresses and focuses on relieving the pressures of modern technology – helping you to feel calmer and more centred. The trend has a whole load of physical and mental benefits too. It’s known to help beat chronic fatigue, insomnia and even reduce anxiety levels.

“Earthing or grounding” searches have experienced an uplift of 300% over the past year, showing that 18 months stuck indoors has persuaded more people to reconnect with nature.

Breathwork

Referring to breathing techniques and exercises to help your mind and body focus, breathwork has become a go-to wellness trend for the masses, so much so that searches have increased by 950% over 12 months!

With so many different types of breathwork to try – it’s easy to get started and find the one that works for you. The beauty of breathwork is that when practising, nowhere is off-limits. You can relieve stress and tension by sitting at the park, listening to the ocean waves, or just as easily when making your morning coffee.

Digital Detoxing

Digital detoxing isn’t exactly a new wellness trend, but it’s picked up again since we’ve found ourselves at home more, immersed in our technology.

Dr Lindsay Browning, psychologist and sleep expert at And So To Bed, explains why phones may be affecting our sleep:  “Blue light is the frequency that our eyes are looking for to tell us what time it is. When you’re on your phone late, it’s effectively flooding your eyes with “bright sunshine” and telling your brains it’s the middle of the day.

“This has a knock-on effect as when you put your phone down to go to bed, your brain is telling you ‘you don’t need to go to sleep’ because it doesn’t think it’s night-time.”

Scream Therapy

Fancy getting all of that repressed anger and built-up emotion out in the middle of a field? Screaming therapy has known benefits to overcome trauma and letting off steam. It’s exactly what it says on the tin – screaming at the top of your lungs, without any consequences or strange looks. Finding a peaceful space out in the open is key to expressing yourself if you’re struggling with overcoming something.

One way to restart the travel industry is thru country-wide, fast-paced vaccination drives. However, supply cannot keep up with the demand in some countries and the long wait fuels vaccine tourism.

Some countries with excess supply see this as an opportunity to attract tourists. Many travel agencies began offering lucrative travel packages to places where travellers can be vaccinated.

Maldives

The Maldives promotes “Vaccine Vacations,” a plan to offer COVID jabs to tourists in a bid to lure visitors back to the island. The plan will be enacted once all of the residents have been vaccinated.

Tourism minister Abdulla Mausoom said: “‘Visit, Vaccinate, Vacation’, will provide tourists with a convenient way to access shots, but the scheme will only go live once the native population has been vaccinated. The main idea of tourism being open is to provide reasonably safe tourism with minimum inconvenience. So once the country gets vaccinated, then we will move on to ‘3V’ tourism.”

Russia

According to Russian state news agency Tass, one of the country’s tourism industry chiefs said that as “vaccination tours” were ready. However, visas and entry requirements for foreign visitors are yet to be finalised. The price of a three-week vaccine tour for foreigners will range between USD1,500 and USD2,500, excluding airline costs.

“The product is ready, but the issues of visa support and legal entry for foreigners wishing to receive the Russian vaccine are yet to be resolved,” Andrei Ignatyev, president of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RUTI), told Tass.

USA

Some cities and states in the US are allowing travellers to get vaccinated. In April, Alaska announced that it would offer free vaccines upon arrival to any visitor landing at one of the state’s four major airports in June.

New York, on the other hand, has announced that it will drop its residency requirements to receive the vaccine and will put up pop-up vaccination sites in tourist spots like Central Park, the High Line, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE has quietly launched vaccine tourism offering free jabs to everyone with an entry visa. In Abu Dhabi’s healthcare app, Emiratis and residents and visitors can register either for the US-German Pfizer/BioNTech jab or the Chinese-made vaccine Sinopharm.

Visitors can book appointments using their passport information on the app. Proof of a visa or an entry stamp is required at the time of inoculation.

The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee said in a June 11 statement that it had also approved the vaccination of those with expired entry visas or residency permits “for their safety and health and in consideration of the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic”.

Thailand is attempting extremely hard to reboot tourism however so far it hasn’t quite worked, particularly with the recent rise in Covid-19 transmission.

Some of you may remember my story on the lengthy 31 steps process to obtain a visa, and 90 days of pre-paid accommodation also required were a bit demotivating for some. Then it became a little creative with the Tinder partnership, and with few exceptions, has continued to be a struggle, despite the relaxing of international visa requirements.

Now, whilst many countries around the globe are moving forward towards legalizing the growth and the consumption of cannabis, Thailand became late 2019 one of these countries after approving the legalization of growing medical cannabis with specific standards and regulations. Thailand is the only country in south-east Asia to legalize growing cannabis for medical purposes and It will also launch cannabis tours programs for International and domestic tourism.

Like most south-east Asian countries, Thailand is famous for its beautiful holiday destinations and its severe punishments on drugs.

For tourists travelling to Thailand, the recreational use of marijuana is still illegal with penalties, including up to 10 years in prison. Tourists will be able to gain access to medical marijuana with a prescription by going through the proper channels.

Thailand’s tourism and sports minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakan, is encouraging “weed tourism” as a way to bring economic benefits outside of the manufacturing of cannabis. Building a “quality tourism” campaign aimed at Europeans and Americans to visit for “beaches and relaxation.”

Cannabis tours in Thailand will be like the wine tours in other countries. It will consist of visiting cannabis farms with a guide who explains how they grow the best quality cannabis and give other information’s. Thereafter the guests can purchase the cannabis products created for health & wellness, and food & beverage.

Due to limited supply and lack of option for COVID vaccine coupled with the Thai Ministry of Public Health’s declaration that locals will be prioritised on the distribution, some Thais and expats are turning to vaccine tours to the United States to get protected.

Expats living in Thailand received some bad news. “The vaccines right now are only reserved for Thai people who are now at a high-risk level or living in the severe outbreak areas. Expats should wait for a clear policy from the government,” ministry spokesperson Rungrueng Kitphati said. The minister added that expats may they may have the chance to get the vaccine when there is a surplus in the future.

However, even locals are having a hard time obtaining jabs as the government vaccinates health workers and the elderly first due to limited supply. Thus, affluent Thais and expats are turning to COVID vaccine travel packages offered by some travel agencies to skip the line.

As the vaccination rate ramps up in the US, it gives rise to vaccine tourism where travellers go to the US hoping to get inoculated.

Travel agency Unithai Trip offers packages ranging from THB75,000 to THB200,000(USD2,400 to USD6,400) for trips to San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Meanwhile, My Journey Travel is offering a 10-day trip to San Francisco for a Johnson & Johnson shot.

However, the tourism ministry warned those who plan to avail these tour packages to carefully examine the offers saying that there is no guarantee that travellers will receive the COVID vaccine as regulations vary by state.

Despite the hiccup on Johnson & Johnson, the vaccination rate in the United States is steadily on the rise. According to the latest data The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, about 146.2 million people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Sites are administering about 2.55 million doses per day on average.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said in other countries. Poorer countries trail behind the vaccination rate. Limited supplies are also prompted to prioritise the frontliners and the vulnerable population. People desperate to get vaccinated are now flying to the United States to receive protection against COVID-19, and we are seeing affluent people flying across the world just to jump in line for vaccine.

In the past, Americans are the ones travelling to other countries to receive a cheaper medical procedure. The current situation gives rise to vaccine tourism, which is travelling to another country just to get inoculated.

The main question is, is this legal? Some countries like the UK are actively preventing travellers from outside the country to get vaccinated. In the UK, you are required to get the vaccine through your doctor and you have to confirm all your personal details which include your address. While things are loosely monitored in the US, there is no guarantee that you can get the COVID-19 vaccine. Moreover, regulations vary by state.

The table below from immigration website Visa Place shows states where you can get vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Maldives’ tourism minister Abdulla Mausoom said that Maldives will soon offer vaccine on arrival as part of its 3Vs strategy – Visit, Vaccinate, Vacation – to revive the tourism industry. We are seeing that vaccines will soon become one of the requirements for travel. Many experts are saying that vaccination is the key to kickstart the travel industry.

The UK Wellness Retreat industry is expecting to see a spike in demand post-lockdown, after new research revealed an 81% increase in online searches in 2020.

New research by motorhome rental company Camptoo has revealed that wellness, activity and camping retreats have seen a massive increase in online searches in the past few years.

Demand for wellness retreats has seen a huge spike with a 1,605% increase in the last five years – including an 81% increase in 2020 – despite lockdown, showing people are desperate for a physical and mental break when restrictions are lifted.

The industry is growing quicker than ever and can expect to see another bumper year in 2021, with peak months for bookings and online searches starting in March and running through until the end of summer.

Activity retreats are among the fastest-growing in the industry after having experienced a 928% increase in online searches from 2019 to 2020, before peaking in March-May, and Camptoo’s Head of Wanderlust, Ed Bassett, is expecting a similar uptake in interest this year as the UK gradually begins to ease out of lockdown.

“Activity-based holidays are among the fastest-growing in the industry, and there’s never been a more exciting time to be involved. The benefits of a wellness retreat are endless, but we really believe that adding something activity-based in the UK – whether it be kayaking, hiking, surfing, wild swimming, climbing, mountain biking – will take that experience to the next level.”

He added: “The industry was booming prior to lockdown last year and despite being locked away, we can see that that enthusiasm has not dropped and with everyone desperate to get out of their homes, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the great British outdoors.

“These kinds of activity retreats are brilliant for the mind and body, reconnecting with nature, trying new things, meeting new people and will do no end of good after a tumultuous year. Hiring a camper or motorhome adds yet more adventure to your holiday and you can experience a self-isolated, multi-destination, multi-activity vacation and go as fast or slow as you desire”

Camping - Pitching the Value

Call to Adventure, partnered with Camptoo, are one of the companies expecting to experience a surge in interest in the coming months – particularly after seeing the online search trends favour their services so heavily.

Along with the huge spike in searches for activity holidays, ‘camping retreats’ ‘hiking’ and ‘biking’ also saw a big rise in online queries and all feature in the type of getaways provided by Call to Adventure.

As well as the high demand for adrenaline-fueled pursuits, yoga retreats remain popular and saw an 890% increase from January to April in 2020, while searches for meditation retreats also jumped notably.

Wellbeing and Lifestyle consultant Yvonne Wake of Wellbeingandlifestyle.co.uk added on the benefits of wellness retreats: “Refocusing on yourself and engaging in healthy pursuits like yoga, fitness, country walks, meditation, are all brilliant for mental health, and toning the body.

“I don’t see how the industry cannot continue to grow. There’s absolutely no reason to stop an industry where the earning capacity is getting higher by the year.  We have made the break now and people are really starting to understand what is required to take care of themselves better.

“I expect it to boom once restrictions are lifted as it is the one real thing that is absolutely needed after the past year of limiting conditions, being locked in, being kept away from our usual healthy pursuits, suffering mental health issues, being sad, not being out in the sunshine where we get our best chance of Vitamin D for extra immune protection and so much more.  We desperately need to get our health back on track.”

The Tourism and Sports and Public Health ministries in Thailand are ready to launch the first medical marijuana tour in Southeast Asia next year as they finalised a draft programme for plantations across Thailand.

The goal of the tour is to increase awareness of marijuana for medical purposes and inform those who are interested in growing the plant of the laws, said Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the tourism and sports minister. Eight provinces have plantations that could be part of the tour, comprising Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Samut Songkhram, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Phatthalung and Chon Buri.

“In the early stages, the programme aims to educate locals who would like to form a community enterprise and bid to become authorised cannabis growers. This programme will pave the way for a basic understanding of marijuana and its economic benefits,” said Phiphat. He said the Tourism Department was assigned to work with the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department in promoting medical tourism, including herbs and marijuana for traditional medicine.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the two departments, they want to stimulate the Thai and foreign markets by developing and promoting these tour routes. This cooperation should help locals create new revenue sources with better skills and knowledge of marijuana and herbal tourism, Phiphat added.

The cabinet in August had approved a proposal to amend the Narcotics Act to allow private medical practitioners, including some traditional healers, and farmers to grow the plant for medical treatment.

This development followed the controlled legalisation of marijuana in 2018, which saw Thailand become the first country in Southeast Asia to allow state agencies or those who sought permission to grow cannabis, following the regulations of government agencies. However, marijuana use for recreational purposes is still forbidden in Thailand as the government limits it for medicinal practices.

Phiphat said the government is set to host a cannabis expo in Buri Ram next October, after the first edition was held in 2019. The exhibition could strengthen the position of Thailand as a marijuana medical centre in this region as it will welcome international sellers and buyers related to this medical science, he said.

The event was previously scheduled for this year but was postponed because of the pandemic. Phiphat said the tour programme should assure local communities that are still concerned about the policy.

The tour activities aim to showcase every process, such as growing, regulations and how to earn from cannabis farming.

Laguna Phuket reaffirmed its position as the premier safe destination in Thailand, as it strengthened its healthcare partnership with Bangkok Hospital Phuket and hosted the inaugural Laguna Phuket Health Fair. The event featured free consultations and health screening by specialists in dental, eye, heart, sports medicine and wellbeing for the residents and guests of Laguna Phuket.

The event was the integrated destination’s latest initiative for its #StaySafeWithLagunaPhuket campaign, following the announcement of all its seven deluxe hotels being awarded Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certification and Laguna Phuket hosting the industry awards ceremony in July 2020.

Managing director of Laguna Phuket, Ravi Chandran said: “For more than 25 years, Bangkok Hospital Phuket has provided on-site medical services from its clinic, located at the heart of Laguna Phuket. Czech government is now offering CZK 4,000 (USD 180) per person off a Czech spa holiday. The Czech Republic is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious spas in Europe, and with tourist numbers considerably down on last year, the Czech government has announced a package worth over GBP 34 million (USD 44.76 million) to help stimulate its historic health tourism industry.

Originally aimed specifically at Czech residents, discounts are now available to UK residents as travellers begin to enjoy their first post-COVID holidays. The discount will be available to anyone booking a ‘curative, preventative stay’ of at least six nights and five cures, taking place in a Czech spa facility by the end of 2020.

Many of the spas included in this scheme are located within the West Bohemian Spa Triangle, home to the world’s highest concentration of curative water springs. For centuries these springs have helped cure respiratory diseases and Czech spas are already developing treatment programmes for those recovering from COVID-19. Now is the perfect time for a Czech spa break – the country is home to more than 30 spas catering to every need, and with tourist numbers at a minimum, visitors will have ample space to relax and unwind while benefiting from top balneology experts, highly qualified medical staff and the highest number of certificate holders among EU member states.

Indonesia announces plans to develop medical tourism industry

In a bid to create a new source of national income and to deliver quality medical care to its citizens, Indonesia’s government is considering developing a national  medical tourism industry.

According to the government official, 600,000 Indonesians sought medical treatment overseas – the most in the world, because patients in general prefer overseas health care, citing lackluster domestic medical services related to the treatment of certain diseases.

Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister spokesman Jodi Mahardi said developing Indonesian ‘medical tourism’ sector could potentially bolster the country’s medical independence.

He went on to say that the development of medical tourism in Indonesia was not only feasible, but also highly lucrative given the steady increase in the number of medical tourists around the globe.

Indonesia’s Southeast Asian neighbors, such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, have already developed medical tourism in their respective countries.

Thailand, for instance, recorded a total of 2.29 million medical tourists and US$6.9 billion in income courtesy of the sector in 2016, Jodi said.

Medical tourism, he added, could also serve as a catalyst for job creation and a more diversified economy in the country.

With such a goal, the government has mulled over a plan to build international hospitals staffed with highly trained health professionals from other countries, in collaboration with related state departments and organizations, such as the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI).

“The doctors that will be brought to Indonesia will only be specialists that the country is still lacking. They will work in tandem with local doctors,” Jodi said.

“That way, Indonesians will be able to get better medical treatment and more foreign tourists will come to the country for treatment.”

The plan to develop medical tourism in the country has been years in the making.

In 2017, the Tourism Ministry and the Health Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of medical and health tourism, which was touted as a flagship of special interest tourism.

Indonesia has been among the largest contributors to medical tourism in its neighboring countries. According to the CIMB ASEAN Research Institute, Indonesians spent around US$11.5 billion annually on health care abroad, mostly in Malaysia.

Until now, coronavirus cure is like a rare Pokemon that every country seeks.

World Health Organisation listed “self-care” as the current cure and prevention for COVID-19 advising patients to self-isolate and rest, drink plenty of fluid, and eat nutritious food.

The lack of a vaccine makes people turn to traditional medicine to prevent and manage symptoms. In India, Ayurvedic medicine is being practised as it is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems.

The goal of treatment is to cleanse your body of undigested food, which can stay in your body and lead to illness. The cleansing process—called “panchakarma”— is designed to reduce your symptoms and restore harmony and balance.

Some treatments also include meditation, which may be beneficial to one’s mental health that is affected if a person has contracted the new coronavirus due to stress and anxiety.

In Africa, people are using medicinal plants like Artemisia annua as possible treatments for COVID-19 and it is being tested for efficacy and adverse side effects.

In a statement, WHO welcomes innovations around the world including repurposing drugs, traditional medicines and developing new therapies in the search for potential treatments for COVID-19.

However, even if therapies are derived from traditional practice and natural, establishing their efficacy and safety through rigorous clinical trials is critical.

The lack of coronavirus cure and rapid increase of reported cases have pushed many countries to turn to herbal medicine as a remedy for the pandemic.

Using herbs for illness isn’t a novel idea. For thousands of years, herbs have been used to treat respiratory infections like the flu and pneumonia.

With different clinical trials underway, pharmaceutical companies claim that a vaccine against COVID-19 will be made available as early as September. This has made nations to look for an alternative cure in an attempt to prevent more infection.

China

In China, where the coronavirus started, the Chinese government has claimed that combining herbal medicine with conventional medicine has helped the country deal with the outbreak.

China’s National Health Commission issued a document on treating COVID-19 patients that included several herbal medicines claiming to relieve symptoms like weakness and fever.

Chinese officials and state-run media claimed that alternative medicine has been used to treat patients and health workers that contracted the deadly virus. Zhong Nanshan, an epidemiologist, initially claimed that the government tested the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicines in curing the coronavirus – a practice that has existed for centuries.

Madagascar

In Madagascar, President Andry Rajoelina endorsed a plant-based tonic as a remedy for the novel coronavirus. Launched as Covid-Organics, it is produced from the artemisia plant and other Malagasy plants, which is the source of an ingredient used in a malaria treatment.

BBC claimed that the bottled herbal tea was tested on people fewer than 20 people. However, the president vouched for the tonic to be used a preventive measure and said, “This herbal tea gives results in seven days. Schoolchildren should be given this to drink… little by little throughout the day.”

India

India, the home of Ayurveda medicine – a Hindu system of medicine based on herbal medicines and dietary restrictions, promotes alternative medicine to “strengthen the immune system”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy against the coronavirus includes advising citizens to use traditional herbs. Modi has said people should follow official guidance to use a particular herbal combination known as “kadha” which will “increase immunity.”

India’s Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) promotes traditional healing therapies and lists various practices for boosting the immune system.

Philippines

The country’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is also looking at the effectiveness of certain herbal medicines against COVID-19. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that Lagundi (Vitex negundo), Virgin Coconut Oil, and Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta) are currently being tested to alleviate the symptoms of the coronavirus.

President Rodrigo Duterte waved a 50 million reward to anyone who will find a cure to the coronavirus.

Herbal medicines have long been used to treat infections and viruses. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) claimed that no official cure (conventional or alternative) has been proven to fight against coronavirus. Experts cautioned the public in using medicine without adequate scientific basis.

Even I believe and use herbal medicines when I am down with a cold, cough, or fever. Right now, I am sipping a cup of honey and ginger tea every day to boost my immune system and to ward off viruses and pathogens. Herbal medicine is popular because there are minimal or no side effects. I would still say prevention is better cure.

The whole world is on a race against the clock in finding coronavirus cure and treatment that will be a game-changer in this whole crisis.

Below are the promising trials that make us closer to curing COVID-19.

Ivermectin

BGR reported that scientists in Australia have reportedly discovered a new potential coronavirus cure that can eliminate traces of the virus in 48 hours!

The drug called Ivermectin is an anti-viral drug that was developed in the mid-1970s to fight parasites such as head lice, scabies, and other diseases caused by roundworms and whipworms. Taken once every six to 12 months, ivermectin can also kill larvae and adult worms. It’s also been used in HIV, dengue fever, and Zika treatments.

A team of scientists from Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) and the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity has concluded that the drug could form the basis of a COVID-19 vaccine.

“We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours, there was a really significant reduction in it. Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective – that’s the next step,” BDI’s Dr. Kylie Wagstaff said about the drug. The drug has been tested in vitro and human trials are needed to prove its effectiveness.

Avigan

On 28 March, Japan’s prime minster Shinzo Abe designated Avigan, a drug developed by Fujifilm, as Japan’s standard treatment for COVID-19 following a report that COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Shenzen treated with Favipiravir tested negative for the virus after a median of four days, rather than the 11 days it took for members of the study’s control group to test negative; in another study carried out in Wuhan, patients taking the drug allegedly recovered from fever nearly two days earlier than those who did not take the medication.

The antiviral pill works “by inhibiting the replication of viral genes within infected cells, thereby mitigating the virus’ ability to spread from one cell to another.” The Fujifilm team is in the middle of a clinical trial using the antiviral pill that will conclude in June. Other countries like Turkey and Indonesia have asked Japan for Avigan to conduct their own clinical trials.

Vaccines

Several pharmaceutical companies in the US and Europe are working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing a vaccine for COVID-19. A vaccine will be ready between 12 months to 18 months, although clinical testing is already underway.

Solidarity trial

WHO announced on 18 March that it will conduct a study called the SOLIDARITY trial. “The SOLIDARITY trial provides simplified procedures to enable even hospitals that have been overloaded to participate. Many countries have already confirmed that they will join the SOLIDARITY trial – Argentina, Bahrain, Canada, France, Iran, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand – and I trust many more will join.”

Unlike regular clinical trials that are double-blind so that patients won’t know if they’re getting the drug that’s tested or a placebo, the new studies will test the new therapies on all patients. Participating hospitals can enrol subjects with ease. The doctor will enter the patient’s data in a WHO site, including pre-existing conditions that could alter the course of the COVID-19 disease, and the participant will have to sign an informed consent form. The physician will also list the available drugs in the hospital, and the WHO will randomly assign the patient to one of the therapies available. After that, physicians will only have to record the day the patient leaves the hospital or dies, and whether he or she required oxygen or ventilation.

Solidarity trial will test four treatments: Remdesivir, Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, ritonavir/lopinavir, and ritonavir/lopinavir mixed with interferon beta.

However, it is important to note that the WHO claimed that there is no specific medicine to prevent or treat coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The post 6 simple tips to manage your stress appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Not only can stress have a profound effect on your psychological wellbeing but it can also compromise your physical health. The first step to managing stress is to recognise its effects on your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

Chronic stress, especially when left unaddressed can trigger mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. At the same time, stress can also alter the chemistry of your body. Always being in a fight-or-flight mode activates the adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol, which can increase your heart rate and tenses your muscles. The constant release of such hormones can lead to health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and even diabetes.

To help you regulate your stress levels, Dragan Maksimovic, assistant fitness manager at Fitness First shares some simple, yet effective tips to help deal with everyday challenges and minimize the effects on your mental and physical health.

Change your perception

Your thoughts are more powerful than you think. They can affect your feelings and behaviour. Instead of thinking of a certain situation as a challenge, start to consider that it might just be an opportunity to progress. Remember that growth always begins outside your comfort zone.

Know what you can control, accept what you can’t

Sometimes, life can put us in situations that are completely out of our control. Spending your time worrying and overthinking will not initiate the change that you hope for. A more effective approach that you can take is to invest your time and energy in the things that will make a difference. You may not have control over the circumstances but you can definitely control how you react to them.

Start meditating

From yoga to conscious breathing and self-hypnosis, there are many ways to take your body and mind into a relaxed state. By making meditation a part of your daily routine, you will train yourself to press the reset button, wipe away the stress of the day and strengthen your inner peace. In addition, when you regularly meditate, you train your mind to focus on the present moment and manage stressful events more effectively.

TIP: Spend at least 10 minutes every night before going to sleep and start consciously taking deep breaths. Count your breaths while focusing on the air going through your nostrils until it reaches your lungs and diaphragm.

Exercise regularly

Physical activity has been proven to improve our quality of sleep and increase energy levels.  The release of endorphins acts as a biological and psychological natural painkiller. In fact, a lot of research has confirmed that exercise can ease tension, improve self-esteem and reduce anxiety. Such effects are extremely important and will help you face any stressors calmly and in a much more effective way,

Eat healthy food

Maintaining a proper diet is very crucial when it comes to stress management. Food that is rich in vitamin C, magnesium, and omega-3 can reduce cortisol levels and promote the production of happiness neurotransmitters called serotonin and dopamine. Try to avoid processed meat, junk food and excessive caffeine consumption as they can increase anxiety, agitation and insomnia.

TIP: Meal prepping is an excellent way to avoid emotional eating. Preparing your meals and snacks in advance will stop you from making last-minute, unhealthy food choices, especially when in distress.

Sleep well

The quality of your sleep at night has a direct effect on the way your body functions the following day. Having irregular sleep patterns can leave you feeling irritable, short-tempered and anxious. Similarly, when you are sleep deprived your body goes into survival mode and this can affect the way you manage stress and can also cause you to develop hypertension. To ensure that your body has time to recover and heal overnight, the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep should be an integral part of your overall wellbeing.

TIP: Try going to sleeping and waking up at the same time every day. This helps your body reset its biological clock and improve the quality of your sleep. You should also avoid exposure to blue light that is emitted from phones, computers and TV screens, at least one hour before bedtime.

China’s ministry of science and technology has announced on late Tuesday that favipiravir, the main ingredient in the influenza drug Avigan, showed “very good clinical results” during clinical trials.

A clinical trial involving 80 cases was conducted in a hospital in Shenzhen and a study of 120 cases led by Wuhan University’s Zhongnan Hospital both showed the drug shortened the recovery time for patients.

Fujifilm developed Avigan and has licensed the patent for favipiravir to Chinese company Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical.

The Japanese firm told AFP it was not involved in the clinical tests in China, but “as for Avigan, we have received supply requests from several countries while the Japanese government has asked us to study if we will be able to step up production.”

Fujifilm and the Chinese licence holder are in “a cooperative relationship” but the Japanese firm is not involved in the production in China, he added. Clinical tests using Avigan as a treatment for the virus have also started in Japan.

Since the announcement of China’s ministry of science and technology, shares of the Fujifilm Holdings soared by 15.4% to JPY 5,238, the highest level allowed during trade for the day.

In a race to find the cure for coronavirus, several clinical trials are ongoing worldwide. In Seattle, United States, the first COVID-19 patient received the potential coronavirus vaccine in a clinical trial.

The vaccine is called mRNA-1273 and was developed by NIAID scientists and Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna Inc. The study will use different doses of the experimental COVID-19 vaccine for safety and effectiveness in participants.

Another company fast-tracking its trials is Inovio Pharmaceuticals and is expected to begin its own safety study next month in the US, China and South Korea.

The first patient has received COVID-19 vaccine as part of the clinical trial for possible cure of the pandemic.

Scientists at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle began the much-awaited trial of the potential COVID-19 vaccine. The first participant of the study is an operations manager at a small tech company who anxiously received the injection in an exam room.

Jennifer Haller, 43, said that her children were so proud of her joining the study, according to the Associated Press. Three others were next in line for a test that will ultimately give 45 volunteers two doses, a month apart.

The vaccine is called mRNA-1273 and was developed by NIAID scientists and Massachusetts-based biotechnology company Moderna Inc. The study will use different doses of the experimental COVID-19 vaccine for safety and effectiveness in participants.

First tested on animals, the mRNA-1273 vaccine has “shown promise,” and this is the first trial to examine it in humans, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Scientists were able to quickly develop mRNA-1273 because of prior studies of related coronaviruses that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

This milestone marked the beginning of a series of studies to prove that the shots are safe. However, even if the clinical trial is successful, the COVID-19 vaccine will not be available for the next 12-18 months.

At a news conference, US President Donald Trump praised the rapid progress of the research. It has been 65 days since the Chinese scientists shared the virus’ genetic sequence.

Other treatment trials underway

mRNA-1273 is not the only COVID-19 treatment that is undergoing trial. Dozens of companies are rushing in a worldwide hunt for “cure” as the pandemic surges.

Another company fast-tracking its trials is Inovio Pharmaceuticals and is expected to begin its own safety study next month in the US, China and South Korea.

Meanwhile, Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. will soon begin evaluating an experimental treatment in patients hospitalized with severe Covid-19, according to Bloomberg. The companies initiated a later-stage clinical trial in up to 400 patients for Kevzara, a fully-human monoclonal antibody that inhibits the so-called interleukin-6 (IL-6) pathway. Kevzara is already approved to treat adults with rheumatoid arthritis.

Regeneron will be leading the trials in 16 sites in the United States including New York, which is one of the epicentres in domestic transmission. Sanofi, on the other hand, will lead the trials outside the US, including the countries hit by the outbreak the hardest like Italy.

Another huge pharmaceutical company Pfizer has announced that it is also developing a vaccine for the new coronavirus patient. The company is in discussions with its existing partner BioNTech to create a potential mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

EU pledges EUR 80 million

The European Commission offered up to EUR 80 million of financial support to CureVac to scale up development and production of a COVID-19 vaccine in Europe.

The pledge came after a report in Reuters claimed that the Trump administration was looking into how it could gain access to a potential vaccine being developed by the unlisted German firm and sparked a backlash in Berlin.

The support takes the form of an EU guarantee of a loan from the European Investment Bank that is currently being assessed.

The health and wellness tourism trips to Asia are forecast to reach 128.3 million by 2022 that will help Asia to become the world’s fastest tourism market, says GlobalData.

According to the data and analytics company, international arrivals to Asia-Pacific (APAC) are set to reach 850 million in 2022, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% between 2019 and 2022. A rapid increase in health and wellness trips has emerged as a key driver of this growth in arrivals.

Amber Barnes, travel and tourism analyst at GlobalData said: “The APAC is also, by far, the fastest-growing wellness tourism market; health and wellness trips increased 33% between 2017 and 2019 to reach a 109.4 million. This is because Asia’s wellness traditions have practically defined the world market, but a ‘new Asia’ is also transforming modern health and wellness tourism.”

“Asia’s wellness traditions.”

Its latest report, ‘Key Trends in Health and Wellness Tourism: Analysis of traveller types, key market trends, key destinations, challenges and opportunities’, reveals that Thailand is a key destination within Asia for health and wellness tourism. The company forecasts health and wellness tourism numbers in the country to increase to 27.7 million by 2022 representing a CAGR of 5.6% from 2019.

The largest segment of health and wellness tourism in Thailand is spa tourism with USD 794.7 million being spent in 2019; medical tourism followed with USD 663 million.

With its unique combination of Japanese culture, subtropical temperatures and stunning natural scenery, Okinawa is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Far East and promises a unique wellness retreat for travellers in 2020. From the world’s first deep-sea-water hot spa facility to sunrise yoga on the ocean, there’s plenty to experience across the prefecture’s 160 islands this year to indulge the body and soul – and all just three hours south of Tokyo.

What’s more, as a designated ‘blue zone’ for life expectancy Okinawa has one of the longest living populations in the world – so there’s never been a better time to visit and discover the region’s secrets for long and healthy life.

Below are some of the wellness activities in Okinawa that make a truly unforgettable revitalising break in Japan’s most southern prefecture:

Learn the local secrets of the ‘blue zone’

Newly opened in 2019, the Halekulani Okinawa is running a unique programme of new immersive wellness retreats throughout 2020, including one that will give guests an insight into the  ‘Secrets for Longevity’ of the Okinawan people. Exclusive to guests at the hotel, the programme is run under the supervision of the acclaimed professor Arakawa, who specialises in studying how Okinawa’s distinctive lifestyle enhances longevity and wellness.

Dine Okinawa’s superfoods

Okinawa’s longevity is often attributed to the local’s traditional diet, which incorporates plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables and is centred around eating in moderation – ideal for a wellness break. Taste of Okinawa in the prefecture’s capital city, Naha, offers a popular cooking class and food market tour where visitors can learn all about the local superfoods and ingredients to help them plan their own wellness diet.

Plunge into the deep ocean…on land!

For those looking for a truly unique spa experience during their wellness retreat, Bade Haus Kume Island is the world’s first deep-sea-water hot spa facility boasting pools filled with mineral-rich deep ocean water – thought to possess special powers of healing and rejuvenation. The water is collected from the depths of the sea, off the coast of Kume Island. Here guests can take a dip in the naturally revitalising pools with views of the ocean, followed by a range of therapeutic treatments including aqua therapy and water pressure massage.

Feel the power of sunrise yoga

Some things are worth waking up early for and a morning beach yoga class, set to the backdrop of the spectacular sunrise in Okinawa, is certainly one of them. Whether visitors are early risers by nature or wanting to kick-start their wellness break in style, Drifter’s 2020 calendar of classes include ‘Beach Yoga’ which offers a morning session of restorative and relaxing exercises on the sand while the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean. Those that are feeling a little more adventurous can try their ‘Sup Yoga Class’ where participants attempt the healing poses while balancing on a paddle board in the sea.

Wake up ‘The Karate Kid’ in you

Karate is already a hot topic in 2020 as it’s set to make its debut in the upcoming games, so no 2020 wellness retreat in Okinawa – which is widely known as the birthplace of the sport – would be complete without a visit to a local dojo for an invigorating session of martial arts. With over 400 venues across the prefecture offering classes, visitors are never far from being able to learn the techniques and natural benefits of traditional karate.

Reflect on your ‘ikigai’ at a sacred island

For a mindful and spiritual end to a wellness break in the prefecture, visitors should visit the island of Kudaka, which is thought to be sacred and offers a different atmosphere from the other parts of Okinawa. Locals believe the island is inhabited by Amamikiyo, the god who created the islands, and Kudake is home to Sēfa-utaki which was revered as one of the most sacred places in the Ryukyu Kingdom. Here travellers can visit many of the spots where locals still worship and pray, to feel the island’s spiritual energy and reflect on their ‘ikigai’ the Japanese concept of ‘a sense of purpose’.

I understand that much of the anxiety stems from the fear of the unknown – the carrier of the virus has not been identified and the lack of cure or vaccine. Moreover, the death toll is steadily rising. However, are we making a mountain out of a molehill? I will not disprove the news about the viral illness, but let’s put things into perspective.

The post The light at the end of the tunnel for the coronavirus outbreak appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Your newsfeed these days is probably like mine, a hodgepodge of updates on the coronavirus. I will not deny that my hypochondriac self is on full alert. Even though there is no confirmed case yet on where I live at the time of this writing, I packed up on vitamins, citrus fruits, and masks.

Does the coronavirus warrant the media hype and hysteria? There are times that the media is at fault in sensationalising the reports that could happen due to unreliable and unverified sources. It’s called “drama,” which is a ploy of some media outlets to get viewers and is badly needed when there is very little information about the pathogen.

Moreover, fake news spread faster than the virus. We live in a world where social media is so ubiquitous that it is hard to filter what goes on our newsfeed. By believing and sharing fake news, aren’t we adding fuel to the fire and harbour unreasonable fear and anxiety?

The best remedy to hysteria is perspective. How is this outbreak different from other diseases we have dealt with in the past or are dealing with now? Wuhan is repeatedly labelled as “deadly” with just thousands of confirmed cases and a hundred of deaths. Moreover, the infected persons in the US and Japan are reportedly doing well.

In comparison, according to the figures of Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 56,000 people die from the flu or flu-like illness each year. It also appears those most likely to die of Wuhan virus fit the same profile as flu fatalities: people over 65, those with compromised immune systems and those with serious pre-existing conditions. Two of the 17 Wuhan dead were 89-year-olds with pre-existing conditions; the youngest was 48 and suffering from diabetes and a stroke. Contagiousness is highly important, of course. But so far, there is no evidence that Wuhan, first reported more than three weeks ago, is more contagious than influenza or spreads differently.

If we start thinking that it is the same as the common flu (which I hope it is), we will panic less and will start focusing on what we can and should do on this outbreak.

Meanwhile, despite the flight cancellations, slow on tourism and lockdowns, the travel industry is managing the effects of coronavirus on the sector. For example, Didi Chuxing started serving the city of Wuhan through two special fleets after the city halted normal public transit and ride-hailing services on 24 January in response to the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

A special fleet of DiDi drivers equipped with protective gear and regularly disinfected vehicles now offer around the clock free transportation to all hospital staff in Wuhan. DiDi will continue to dedicate its best efforts to help curb the spread of 2019-nCoV, while ensuring the health and safety of drivers and partners. DiDi is deeply grateful to all the medical workers and driver-partners who join this fight on the frontline. Since last week, DiDi has been distributing face masks and disinfectants to drivers across China. All DiDi drivers and passengers are urged to wear a mask, and drivers are required to disinfect and ventilate their vehicles regularly.

Chinese health officials attempted to contain the virus through quarantine and the government built a hospital in full speed to isolate coronavirus patients. On the other hand, local health authorities of other countries were doing everything to prevent possible importation of the disease. I would like to borrow the words of Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto of Tourism Solomons, “vigilance is the key here.”

Prevention is always better than cure and the same goes for this virus. Just like the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO), frequent handwashing and proper nutrition will keep you from contracting the disease.

Research from ABTA – The Travel Association reveals that people are increasingly incorporating wellness into their holiday, with one in three (34%) people planning to take part in activities focussed on improving their wellbeing such as yoga, meditation, spa and holistic treatments or taking time away from tech.

Holidaymakers plan to spend almost four and a half hours each day (269 minutes) on average doing a combination of wellness activities – with the most time being spent avoiding technology such as smartphones, laptops and tablets. People will spend nearly two hours a day (108 minutes) on average, and a further quarter (24%) more than four hours a day (240 minutes or more), making a conscious effort to keep away from their gadgets.

Whilst holidaymakers are keen to avoid too much time spent on their devices, the popularity of wearable technology, which many people use to track their health and fitness activity, shows no sign of slowing down. One in ten (12%) people take an exercise tracker, such as a Fitbit, away with them, rising to one in five (20%) people in the North East.

Physical fitness is most important for holidaymakers who want to focus on wellness, two-thirds (67%) of people plan to do activities such as yoga, pilates and nature hikes – with more than one in ten (14%) planning to spend over four hours a day on them.

The next most popular wellness activities on the list are spa treatments (42%) and meditation/silent time (39%). Just over one in ten (14%) plan to try holistic therapies such as Reiki and chakra balancing. The main reason why people are planning to take part in wellness activities is to relax and unwind (60%), with young holidaymakers being the most likely to prioritise mental wellbeing (46% vs 35% average).

“Now is a good time to explore your options”

More people than ever are seeking ways to alleviate stress and boost wellbeing, and over two million UK holidaymakers are planning to take a wellness trip in the next 12 months. Trips are also up 20% globally since 2015, with most wellness holidays are taken in Europe and destinations such as Germany, France, Austria and Greece increasingly investing in this area.

Victoria Bacon, ABTA’s director of brand and business development, said: “Travel companies are increasingly catering to people who want to focus on their wellbeing when away – whether it’s incorporating it into their holiday or taking a dedicated wellness trip. From adventure to youth to cruise brands, we have a wide range of ABTA Members who can ensure holidaymakers get exactly what they want from their trip, such as offering accommodation that has specific facilities or comprehensive wellbeing programmes.

“With the start of a new year, many people turn their attention to holidays for the year ahead. It’s a great time to book as there is an abundance of deals and offers available, and an endless amount of choice too, so booking early helps you get the best value for money for the holiday of your choice. For those looking to get away, whether it’s to focus on physical or mental wellbeing, visit a popular destination or to try something new – now is a good time to explore your options.”

The Global Wellness Institute recently reported that self-care tourism is the world’s fastest-growing travel sector – so there’s got to be something great about it, right?

People have always travelled for health and rejuvenation.  Move with Us retreats offer unforgettable experiences for both your mind and your body; transforming perspectives and giving incredible adventures in beautiful surroundings. Here are the 5 benefits of a wellness escape.

Disconnect

As the word ‘retreat’ suggests, you’ll be withdrawing from the stresses and distractions of everyday life. Give yourself the space to shift your focus to the smaller things and improve your physical and mental health.

Support

The professional team at Move with Us will support and guide you in your efforts to reach your wellness goals. Whether you want to de-stress or lose some extra weight, they’ve got you covered.

Meet others

Wellness retreats offer a great opportunity to meet and share your experiences with like-minded people. This also makes it easier to continue your health journey after the retreat, as doing activities with a friend encourages you to stick to your goals.

No planning needed

One way in which retreats help to facilitate rest and wellness is by taking all the stress out of regular holidaymaking. There’s no need to worry about things like commutes, reservations or scheduling – everything is taken care of.

Detox

At a retreat, you can detox yourself from non-nutritious foods in order to kickstart your health journey, but you’ll also have the opportunity to detox yourself from screens and the constant pressures of our smartphones.

The Himachal Pradesh government has approved the draft of the new tourism policy in the state aimed at holistic development of tourism. The state cabinet has approved ‘Capital Investment Subsidy’ for tourism projects in underdeveloped areas of the state and grant for access of roads and water supply to tourism units.

There will be 5% capital subsidy for the new projects under this category. To provide accessibility to new tourism projects, which lacked road connectivity and drinking water supply, the government has proposed 15% subsidy. Srikant Baldi, chief secretary of Himachal Pradesh government said: “There is going to be a subsidy component for the adventure tourism project of all kinds, and those setting up tents will be encouraged with additional 10% incentives on investments.”

The policy will have special focus on ecotourism, agro organic tourism, snow tourism, lake tourism, adventure tourism, pilgrimage tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, health and wellness tourism, film and MICE tourism.

The main objectives of this policy is to promote tourism diversification through theme based development, to safeguard state’s tourism destinations through sustainable interventions, to ensure that sustainable tourism primarily benefits host communities, to build capacity and develop quality human resource for the tourism industry, to provide safe, secure and unique ‘tourism for all’ and to create enabling environment for investments for sustainable tourism.

The Government of Portugal through Turismo de Portugal has announced the launch of #Brelcome Health, a campaign specially developed for British tourists visiting the country for heath treatments. As part of the initiative, Portugal will offer high quality health care services to Britons at three of the country’s largest private healthcare providers – Lusíadas, CUF and Hospital da Luz, for a fixed price.  The services are available immediately and will be offered to British tourists irrespective of the Brexit outcome, a sign of the special relationship held by Portugal with the UK.

A specialised ‘Portugal Health Passport’, launched as part of the campaign, will offer tourists premium health care services, performed by highly qualified and internationally recognised professionals and English-speaking staff, covering both emergency care and preventive medicine.

British tourists seeking medical attention simply have to present their health passport to access the services for a special price. Tourists seeking specialised services as part of health tourism have to pre-book to access specific treatments.

With the UK being the largest incoming market to Portugal, the country also seeks to maintain a smooth and stable process for British visitors. In this spirit, Portugal recently launched the Brelcome campaign to reaffirm the country’s ongoing commitment to British citizens, with the slogan ‘Brelcome, Portugal will never leave you’. Within a month of its launch, the campaign reached over 8 million people in the UK.

Medical tourism sales in the UAE increased 5.5% year-over-year to reach AED 12.1 billion (USD 3.2 billion) in 2018 with growth supported by a number of government-led initiatives and the rising number of medical tourists in the country, a new analysis released by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry revealed.

The analysis, based on recent data from Euromonitor International and Fitch Solutions, found that health expenditure in the UAE amounted to an estimated AED 50.3 billion (USD 13.6 billion) in 2018, marking a 5.4% increase compared to the previous year.

Key factors supporting this growth trend include new medical tourism initiatives implemented by government entities and increasing sector privatisation of the sector in the form of investment and the building state-of-the-art health facilities. Among the main initiatives recently introduced by the Dubai Health Authority is the Dubai Health Experience (DXH) which is the first medical tourism portal in the region enabling tourists to book their entire medical holiday online.

Furthermore, the Abu Dhabi Department of Health and Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) jointly launched the Abu Dhabi Medical Tourism e-portal, a digital platform that provides visitors to Abu Dhabi with all medical offerings and healthcare facilities available throughout the duration of their visit.

The global spa and wellness consultancy and think tank, Raison d’Etre, has announced its latest trend alert — the rise of psychedelic retreats in wellness tourism.

Psychedelic retreats are attracting a diverse and global audience, from patients struggling with treatment resistant ailments, to young professionals on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley, with the former turning to underground guides and shamans for emotional healing and the latter utilising micro-dosing nootropic to enhance creativity and productivity.

There are already several retreats facilitated globally, predominately in countries where psychedelic substances are legalised, decriminalised or unregulated. The appeal of travelling to a retreat, as opposed to having an individual session, is the safe and peaceful setting, where consumers can undergo psychedelic therapy, away from the obligations and distractions of everyday life.

Discussing the new trend, Michael Simonato, project manager at Raison d’Etre Think Tank said: ”We look forward to monitoring the impact of this trend on the global wellness industry as it becomes more acceptable. Perhaps within the near future we will see psychedelics taking place not only as a standalone treatment but also as a common ingredient in team-building workshops, couples’ therapy, coaching, yoga, detox, meditation and mindfulness and art and creativity retreats.”

Malaysian hotel group YTL Hotels has now opened the floating spa at Monkey Island Estate resort in Bray-on-Thames, UK. The spa is located on a bespoke crafted barge moored on the banks of the island and houses three treatment rooms, a themed wheelhouse reception and an elixir bar.

Inspired by the monks who once inhabited the island, the treatments and spa experiences have been choreographed to fit the setting and concept. Each spa treatment will begin with a sensory ritual and tasting of one of the monk-brewed ancient herbal tonics.

The spa is also peppered with touch points that celebrate the power of water, taking guests on holistic voyages through the history of the island and the river Thames. The spa team has partnered with British spa brand Moss of the Isles to create the bespoke treatments.

Monkey Island Estate is the latest addition to YTL Hotels’ growing UK portfolio, a collection of hotels which already includes The Gainsborough Bath Spa, Threadneedles, The Glasshouse and The Academy.

According to Thomas Cook India’s internal data, the demand for wellness tourism has grown by over 20% year-on-year over the last three years, highlighting the new age traveller’s growing investment in self-care holidays. The touchstone of Thomas Cook India’s Travolution initiative is self-discovery and rejuvenation of the senses- by incorporating some of the most powerful yoga practices set against India’s pristine locales.

Health and wellness - APAC

To better connect with the mindstyle of today’s luxury travellers, travel brands and advisors must upgrade their health and wellness propositions. There are new demands such as healthy plant-based dining, medical spas and digital detoxing — but there is a huge gap between expectations and reality.

For example, a new insight report by Reuter: Intelligence, created with ILTM Asia Pacific, found that there is a lack of simple vegetarian options, massage rooms and even worse, a lack of free Wi-Fi being offered by some travel businesses today.

“Luxury Asian consumers now have a health and wellness mindstyle”

Lee Folland, research director of Reuter: Intelligence, said: “The report, analysing diverse categories of industry, discovered that luxury Asian consumers now have a health and wellness mindstyle – both their mindset and lifestyle are centred around the world of wellness.

“This means that travel and hospitality businesses must shift away from simply promoting intangible escapes to tangible, results-based holistic health and wellness.”

New forms in the face of modern lifestyle

The Global Wellness Summit (GWI) Global Wellness Tourism Economy report stated that the industry is worth USD 4.2 trillion globally, a year-over-year growth of over 12%.

In APAC, the corporate wellness market alone is expected to reach USD 7.4 billion by 2024 representing a growth rate of 9%. Moreover, Asia has been the fastest-growing region in both wellness tourism trips and revenues for each of the last five years.

Travel brands and advisors can expect more affluent Asian consumers today seeking new forms of wellness experiences in the face of hectic modern lifestyles and the pressures of professional demands, environmental pollution and social media.

Luxury plus brand One&Only has unveiled a new worldwide partnership with wellness and beauty expert brand Chenot.

The new deal will see One&Only take advantage of Chenot’s fifty years of experience as a high-end provider of medical spa, health and wellness products by rolling out two different wellness packages across its resorts — the popular Espace Chenot and the new One&Only Spa by Chenot, which, you might guess, has been developed for exclusive use at One&Only.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be announcing a global partnership with the Chenot Group. Like One&Only, Chenot tailors every experience to the individual guests’ needs. It is so important for us at One&Only, to seek out leaders in their field who truly value the guest experience.

“We pride ourselves in providing something different for our guests, from culinary to once-in-a-lifetime excursions, and now to the ultimate in overall wellbeing,” said Philippe Zuber, president and chief operating officer for One&Only.

“Wellbeing is a lifestyle and no longer optional whilst travelling on holiday, and because of this partnership, our guests will now have access to exclusive, immersive and most importantly a complete and distinct experience at our resorts that will extend far beyond the spa. The science behind Chenot combined with the One&Only lifestyle will lead to guests experiencing the absolute in wellness,” added Zuber.

Dr George Gaitanos, chief operating officer and scientific director, Chenot Group: “We are very excited to partner with One&Only and we truly believe that together we will create an offering of true wellness value.”

One&Only Spa by Chenot will open at One&Only Desaru Coast in Malaysia and Espace Chenot will be introduced at One&Only’s new resort in Europe, One&Only Portonovi in Montenegro in 2020.

MJ Holdings Inc (MJH), a management and consulting company to the regulated cannabis industry, has announced its first health and wellness cannabis hotel, together with hotel developer Roger Bloss.

Alternative Hospitality, a division under MJH, will break ground later this year in Desert Hot Springs, California. Bloss, the division’s acting CEO and president, invested USD 1,000,000 in the company’s initial round of funding in 2018.

The 150-room Coachill Inn Resort, designed by architect David Wallace, will have an amphitheatre for entertainment and a lazy-river pool that capitalises on the area’s natural hot springs.

“The opportunity to safely experiment”

Bloss commented on the project: “The Coachill Inn Resort will attract travellers who are looking for an experience and the opportunity to safely experiment.

“People from all over the world come to the Coachella Valley for business, tourism, and the famed Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. And now they can learn about the health and wellness benefits of hemp, CBD, and cannabis.”

Alternative Hospitality has seven more planned properties in the pipeline and Coachill Inn Resort will be the first.  The other three will be located in Las Vegas, two will be in California, one will be in Michigan and another in Oklahoma. The company also revealed in a statement that each hotel will include a cannabis dispensary and wellness goods.

Late nights at pubs and clubs when we travel could be a thing of the past and will be replaced by early morning runs and spa appointments. Most companies and organisations predict that wellness travel will boom this year.

According to SRI International, wellness tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the travel space as more travellers are opting for healthier activities even when they’re on a trip. It is more than a trend or a fad, rather it’s becoming a way of life as more mainstream travellers want to incorporate wellness into their stay.

Anne Dimon, president of Wellness Tourism Association, said: “More travelling consumers are mindfully making healthier decisions in their day-to-day lives and they want to take these new practices and habits with them when they travel, so they look for hotels/resorts that can accommodate their needs and wants – primarily healthy food options, movement activities such as yoga and available and easily accessible fitness activities out in nature such as hiking, cycling, stand-up paddle boarding and cross-country skiing.”

“It is not a ‘generational thing’ and it is not even a trend.”

“It is not a ‘generational thing’ and it is not even a trend.  Because of our newfound emphasis on ‘self-care’, millennials to boomers are looking to take their wellness lifestyles with them when they travel for business or pleasure. Additionally, in smaller but growing numbers, consumers are looking to use their vacation or holiday time to plan quick or extended getaways with a specific wellness-focus in mind,” she added.

Looking for happiness and change

Many people turn to travel to relieve stress and fatigue from their daily routine. Visitors looking to nurture their mental health are also on the rise. In Koh Samui, Thailand, Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary’s co-founder Karina Stewart said most of the resort’s guests arrive with a goal in mind, whether it is something clearly defined like stress or fitness, or if it is a need to reset internally, following difficult life changes.

Tara Hanrahan, group director of Spa Operations – SPA Cenvaree, Centara, said: “It’s sad to say but so many people are not happy with their lives and looking for a change. And wellness tourism can help so much here. It fills a void that’s missing in people’s lives and can kickstart some profound lifestyle changes. I personally believe that there are two steps here that many wellness hospitality companies are missing. The first is education – give guests the tools to implement these changes in their daily lives. Secondly, to look at how they support their guests between visits. That to me is the next big trend coming to the industry.”

Full of opportunities

Wellness travel poses a myriad of opportunities for travels companies. I personally saw hotels opening their gyms and fitness centres 24 hours a day to accommodate the fitness regimen of their guests. Cruise ships now have gyms and spas in their amenities too.

Travel agencies like Health & Fitness Travel specialise in curating health and fitness holidays. They carefully hand pick destinations that fit the goals of a wellness traveller, be it a digital detox, sleep enhancement, emotional healing or fitness and nutrition.

Dimon told me, “There are a number of ways that travel operators and other companies in the travel industry can capitalise on the growing demand.  Here are three. 1. Create their own wellness-focused packages.  2. Work with existing suppliers to create enhanced or signature packages. 3. Partner with local operators to create a list of options to sell as add-ons. For instance, daily yoga classes, walking or hiking tours of the destination and healthy cooking classes with a local chef to name just a few.”

Thailand’s New Year’s gift: Legalisation of marijuana https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/thailand-marijuana-legal/ Wed, 26 Dec 2018 06:08:31 +0000 https://www.traveldailymedia.com/?p=491092 The post Thailand’s New Year’s gift: Legalisation of marijuana appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Thailand has one of the world’s strictest drug laws, but recently approved marijuana for medical use and research. Lawmakers confirmed that marijuana for recreational use remains illegal.

The junta-appointed parliament in Thailand has voted to amend the Narcotic Act of 1979 on Tuesday in an extra parliamentary session handling a rush of bills before the New Year’s holidays. The National Legislative Assembly’s 166 members voted in favour of the change and there were no votes objecting the motion. There were 13 members who abstained from the vote.

“This is a New Year’s gift from the National Legislative Assembly to the government and the Thai people,” said Somchai Sawangkarn, chairman of the drafting committee, in a televised parliamentary session.

While some countries have legalised marijuana for medical and even recreational use, possession and use of drugs remain illegal in most countries in Southeast Asia and face severe punishment like life sentence and death penalty.

In the UK, the government approved medical marijuana earlier this year and became available on 1 November to patients with a prescription. In the Unites States, medical marijuana is legal in 30 states, though the laws governing what’s permitted vary from state to state.

The legalisation of marijuana is not without controversy as some foreign firms have requested patent that will allow them to dominate the market and will make it harder for Thai patients to access medicines and for Thai researchers to access marijuana extracts.

Marijuana reportedly has various medical benefits such as treatment for stroke, epilepsy, dementia, depression, and anxiety.

Carnival Cruise Line has updated its smoking policy and violators may be disembarked from the cruise ship.

The policy will take effect on 1 December, but the information on the web pages have already been updated. It is clear that when you smoke in the stateroom or balcony, you — as well as everyone in your stateroom — will be kicked off at the next stop.

In the past, Carnival charged a fairly substantial cleaning fee to those who smoke in their staterooms or on the balconies. Now, the cruise line is imposing a much stricter policy.

Smoking policy

On the Carnival web page specifically devoted to smoking-related issues, the question is asked: “What happens if a guest is caught smoking in a stateroom or balcony?”

“They will be assessed a USD 500 charge, per violation, on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this charge is included in Section 8 of Carnival’s Cruise Ticket Contract. The assessment of this charge does not allow a guest to continue smoking in his/her stateroom.”

It is important to note that it does not mean that simply paying the fee will allow the person in question to continue to violate the policy.

“All guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel”

The site continues: “If a guest is found to be in violation of our smoking policy, all guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel and risk not being allowed to sail on Carnival in the future. Guests will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of unused cruise fare will be provided.”

Carnival advises guests that if they saw someone violating the rules, fellow passengers should contact guest services as opposed to confronting the situation directly. “This will help avoid uncomfortable situations between guests,” the website explains.

Harsher punishment

Although the page says that the policy “is consistent with the policy of other major lines,” Carnival Cruise Line policy is stricter.

Norwegian’s written policy states that “smoking inside your stateroom or on our balcony will result in a USD 250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account” with no mention of disembarking.

Royal Caribbean’s smoking policy also cites a USD 250 cleaning charge, but adds that the passenger “may be subject to further action pursuant to the ‘Consequences Section’ of the Guest Conduct Policy.” That section lists several scenarios, including the possibility of being disembarked.

To avoid hefty fees and being kicked off the cruise, Carnival has designated smoking areas.

PWD - Oliver's Travels

Luxury holiday operator, Oliver’s Travels, has conducted a study that revealed more than 50% of the people with disabilities find travel considerably more difficult or near impossible.

In order to gain valuable insights and improve its services, Oliver’s Travels surveyed 1,000 people with disabilities to know exactly what challenges they face when travelling. Through the research, it was found that one of the key issues affecting people with disabilities when travelling is feeling uncomfortable around other holidaymakers, which is a concern for more than 30% of the respondents.

Other key difficulties include airports, airline and other transport not being adapted for those with disabilities, while a lack of accessible booking options is another key hurdle for almost 25% of the respondents.

“Need to improve our accessible travel provisions”

Oliver Bell, co-founder and owner of Oliver’s Travels, said: “It was incredibly important for us to gain further insight into accessible travel and the key barriers facing travellers with disabilities.

“The results of our survey have been invaluable to us in identifying the areas in which we need to improve our accessible travel provisions, and we hope our findings will encourage a step in the right direction for the travel industry as a whole.”

Airport Disability - Oliver's Travels

In today’s travel industry, highly-personalised services has become a trend but it seems that travel for the disabled still needs improvement. The research found that although there are many travel options that offer accessibility, it can leave disabled travellers out of pocket. 40% of those in the survey revealed that accessible travel is always more expensive in order to have the necessary support and adaptations to meet their needs.

Generally speaking, respondents stated that they did not find tour operators particularly supportive in catering to travellers with disabilities and 16% say that those working within the hospitality industry need to be provided with full training on how to understand and support accessible travel needs.

This may be a key reason why almost a third of those surveyed stated that they prefer to travel with companies who prioritise accessible travel, but find it is not always possible.

On the brighter side, however, 44% of respondents said that they have seen a small improvement in accessibility options in the last five years and expect to see further improvement in the next five years.

Disabled Hope - Oliver's Travels

The research proves that the travel industry should evidently be correcting the issues identified. Travel companies must continue to review ways in which they can adapt and improve their accessible travel options moving forward.

Since conducting the research, Oliver’s Travels have been making key developments to their website to ensure their online resources and booking options are accessible for all. Additionally, the team has conducted research into travel tools and resources to help support travellers with disabilities while on holiday.

Qatari real estate and hotel management company Retaj Hotels and Hospitality, has recently announced details of it Asian expansion with the signing of new strategic partnership with Thailand’s Taj Hana.

Mohamed Bin Johar Al Mohamed (below, centre right), vice chairman and managing director of Retaj Group and Luqman Nani (below, centre left), managing director of Taj Hana Group, signed the partnership at Al Meroz Hotel in Bangkok, with former Thai deputy Prime Minister Wan Muhamad Noor Matha in attendance.

The agreement, which comes as part of Retaj’s global expansion plan to cement their reputation and become one of the top hospitality companies in the Middle East, will provide more than 27 hotels for the group to operate over the next five years – in strategic locations such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and China.

Mohamed Bin Johar Al Mohamed said of the event: “Retaj has established itself as a key brand, being the first and only Qatari hotel brand operating inside and outside the state and which has succeeded in spreading to many countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.”

“The Far East countries of Asia are among the most important tourist destinations in the world and the most popular among Southeast Asian countries as there is great potential for tourism in these countries,” he said.

Describing the importance of medical tourism to the Thai travel industry, Nani noted that Thailand’s high-quality and affordable treatment costs has seen medical and wellness tourism becoming a key aspect of the nation’s tourist industry.

He explained how the partnership includes 2,000 hotel rooms to be managed by Retaj Hotels and Hospitality in Thailand, in addition to 3,000 hotel rooms across East Asia including China, Japan and South Korea.

Echoing the importance of wellness and health to Retaj’s MO, another agreement signed by the groups allows for provision of the Taj Hana Spa brand to appear in all new Retaj Hotels.

The wellness facilities, which feature anti-aging, detox and aqua therapies, along with treatment for sports injuries and stretching and visualisation programmes, are bolstered by special medical spas which combine traditional Thai remedies with modern medicine to treat a vast range of chronic conditions.

In view of a massive rise in the number of medical tourists visiting Hyderabad every year, the city is all set to launch a facilitation centre in January 2018. The centre will be launched by the government as part of its new policy to boost medical tourism across the country, which has risen by up to 80 percent in the last five years.

Officials said that as part of the policy, six facilitation centres in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi and Goa are planned. “The facilitation centre will provide medical tourists accommodation, hospital and doctor details, registration facilitation, translators, travel and other provisions. We are also focusing on promoting homestay facility for medical tourists to bring down their cost of stay,” said a senior official from the health ministry.

There are 11 major hospitals which attract the highest number of medical tourists in the city. While a majority of hospitals provide facilities to foreign patients, the Centre’s centre is viewed as a move to promote Hyderabad for medical tourism. “Hyderabad lags in terms of connectivity. Language is also a major barrier for many patients,” said Mahendar Pala (main picture), group head – marketing, CARE Hospitals. “Having a facilitation centre wherein patients can avail facilities and details about hospitals will help in promoting Hyderabad as a brand for medical tourism,” Pala said.

The Telangana government is also planning to have an integrated medical tourism hub in Hyderabad. The tourism department had held few preliminary meetings with the government as well as corporate hospitals to discuss the possibility of setting up the facility. Sources said that the hub is proposed to be set up in the Sports Tower building in Gachibowli. “It will serve as an onestop centre. Facilities such as medical appointments and post-medical treatment requirements will be available, apart from coordination with hospital staff and translators,” said a tourism department official.
