Tune Hotels has announced plans to open its first hotel in Melbourne, and use the city as its operational headquarters for Australia and New Zealand.
The announcement was made in the city today (17 June 2013) by Mark Lankester, group CEO of Tune Hotel, who met with the premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine. Tune Group’s co-founder and AirAsia chief, Tony Fernandes, was also present.
Tune Hotel Melbourne at 609 Swanston Street is a new 225-room property which is scheduled to open on 1 November 2013. As with all Tune properties, guests will pay a room only rate with chargeable extras such as Wi-Fi, satellite TV, toiletries and towels.
“We are very excited about Tune Hotel Melbourne as it marks our growing brand’s entry into Australia and New Zealand. Melbourne will be the location for our HQ overseeing Australia and New Zealand operations, working in conjunction with the corporate office in Kuala Lumpur. Given our long-term plans for the region, the Australia and New Zealand HQ will be staffed relevantly to oversee and provide central support to Tune Hotels’ properties in Australia and New Zealand,” said Lankester.
Dr Napthine said the decision to base Tune’s regional headquarters in Melbourne would “create up to 100 jobs” for the city, while Fernandes said he hoped the property would follow AirAsia’s success in Melbourne.
“AirAsia X had been serving the Melbourne route for more than four years now and it is one of our best-selling. I am very pleased that Tune Hotels will now have its presence in Melbourne to give visitors to this wonderful city a truly compelling accommodation alternative. We are sure the Australian market will welcome and embrace Tune Hotels just as they did AirAsia X,” the low-cost carrier’s CEO said.
