UNWTO to raise media profile of tourism sector

The UNWTO is organising a conference to raise the profile of the tourismin the media. ‘Tourism in the Headlines” will examine why, despite being one ofthe world’s largest and fastest-growing economic sectors, tourism rarely makesthe headlines or the economic pages of newspapers. Globally, as an exportcategory, tourism ranks fourth after fuels, chemicals, and the automotiveindustry, yet its economic and development relevance is often overlooked by themedia. With input from top communications experts, participants aim to improvethe extent and accuracy of tourism coverage; a highly image-sensitive sector inwhich negative press and sensational stories can mean the loss of livelihoods.The gathering in Zagreb, Croatia, 12-13 September also offers an opportunityfor tourism communicators to learn about the tools and strategies available forgetting their story across.
