Vietnam will see an influx of Russian tourists this winter, after a major new charter flight deal was agreed with a Russian tour company.
According to local media reports, Vietnamese travel company Anh Duong Co has signed a new deal with Pegas Touristik Co that will see up to 72 charter flights carry Russian holidaymakers to Vietnam between late October 2013 and April 2014.
During the period, an estimated 4,500 Russian tourists are expected to arrive in Vietnam on charter flights each week, marking a 40% year-on-year increase. Most of flights will operate into Cam Ranh International Airport, the gateway the beach resort town of Nha Trang, while others will go to Danang and Phan Thiet.
“Within a period of six months, there will be over 100,000 Russian tourists flying here on charter flights. However, this is just the expected flight schedule, as the frequency may be maintained until late next year,” Anh Duong Co’s chair, Hoang Thi Phong Thu, was quoted saying by the Saigon Times.
In addition to the charter flights, Vietnam Airlines will increase the frequency of its direct flights between Cam Ranh and Moscow from one to two flights per week, and the Saigon Times reported that the national carrier recently flew a delegation of Russian travel agents to Vietnam to meet local tourism suppliers.
Russia is Vietnam’s fastest-growing visitor source market, with arrival numbers jumping 71% to in 2012 to just over 174,000 visitors. And this number has almost already been exceeded in 2013, with 170,500 Russian tourists entering Vietnam in the first seven months of the year, 57% more than the same period last year.
