The World's Biggest & Brightest Cultural Festivals in 2017
New Year’s isn’t the only occasion for fireworks – 17 of the world’s biggest and brightest
If you’ve ever wanted another reason to light up the sky with brilliant colors, look no further; this new colourgram from Pokies.net.au is your guide to the world events with the most pop, bang and crackle.
Are you a firework fan? Can’t wait for New Year’s Day for your fix of whoosh, boom, whistle? Indoor fireworks and sparklers not doing it for you?
Worry no more – the new graphic from Pokies.net.au is full of rockets, fountains, and wheels from across the globe. Arranged by date, it’s a calendar of colourful explosions from Twelfth Night on 6th January in Iceland through to La Noche Buena in Peru on 24th December.
As well as some stunning firework imagery, the colourgram includes some cultural history about each of the events, like:
- Australia Day, which marks the anniversary of the arrival of the British at Port Jackson in New South Wales in 1788, and the raising of the British flag.
- The Taiwan Lantern Festival, which doesn’t just include fireworks – it also incorporates sky lanterns in a two-part festival across the Wumaio Temple and the Pingxi District.
- Rouketpolomeos (Greek for “Rocket War”), a Greece festival where two rival Orthodox churches try to ring the bell of the other church by shooting fireworks at it.
- Correfocs, or “fire-runs”, have people dressed as devils running through the streets of Catalan towns and cities lighting fireworks on pitchforks. Spectators dress in protective clothing and try to run with the fire.
Fireworks may have been around as far back as the 7th Century, but these modern festivals are from origins national and spiritual throughout history.
From the Chinese New Year, thousands of years old, through to the Malta International Fireworks Festival, which started in 2003 when Malta joined the European Union, it’s a quick trip across world history – and how it’s celebrated, in bright explosions.
