Directline Holidays has revealed that the Greek islands have been catching up with sales to Majorca this summer. The online travel agent saw sales to Larnaca in Cyprus increase 28% last month compared to June, while Corfu was up 21% and Rhodes bookings increased 5%. The news follows statistics from Greece last week that said tourism arrivals had jumped 10% compared to last year, with the UK as a key inbound market. “The increased popularity of the Greek islands is due to recent economic events enabling competitive pricing,” said Maria Whiteman, CEO of Directline Holidays. Meanwhile for city breaks, Paris and Dublin have remained the most popular but newcomer Krakow has seen a 70% increase. “This summer we’ve seen Brussels and Prague replace Edinburgh and Madrid in the rankings, suggesting British citybreakers are still keen to head overseas, providing some especially good news for the Irish economy as Dublin city breaks are up 76% on last year. The trend for booking late endures, with 37% of July city break bookings for travel in August,” added Whiteman.
