Businesses have welcomed the news that Virgin Atlantic is to launch flights from Scotland to Heathrow in the spring to provide competition to British Airways.
The Scottish Passenger Agents Association (SPAA) said the routes would provide more options for consumers, while Edinburgh Airport said the announcement was part of its work to bring more airlines to the airport.
The airport was sold from BAA to GIP in the summer and as well as Virgin Atlantic has seen new flights introduced from Turkish Airlines, easyJet and Brussels Airlines.
Gordon Dewar, CEO of Edinburgh Airport said the new routes work to promote the city worldwide.
“This is good news for Scottish passengers. We’re focused on providing Scotland with choice both in terms of routes and carriers whilst extending its reach across the world. This new regular service does exactly that, giving choice to Heathrow and opening up a new set of onward destinations for our passengers,” he added.
